It's 0:01:49.480 --> 0:01:52.880 been one of the most surreal twenty four to forty 0:01:52.880 --> 0:01:56.040 eight hour periods I can remember. Yeah, but it's dominating 0:01:56.080 --> 0:01:59.880 headlines all around the world. We've seen a lot of misinformation. 0:02:00.520 --> 0:02:01.960 So I think it would be helpful if you can 0:02:02.000 --> 0:02:04.200 take us back to the start and we spend a 0:02:04.240 --> 0:02:08.760 bit of time laying out how everything unfolded on Sunday afternoon. It was 0:02:16.360 --> 0:02:20.040 about six forty pm on Sunday when a series of 0:02:20.120 --> 0:02:23.800 gun shots rang out near a local Jewish community gathering 0:02:24.280 --> 0:02:27.560 right by the beach. Emergency services were called to the 0:02:27.639 --> 0:02:31.680 scene and arrived there promptly where police located two men 0:02:32.040 --> 0:02:35.359 using rifles and shotguns to fire into crowds of people. 0:02:35.840 --> 0:02:39.760 Multiple videos posted to social media show those two gunmen 0:02:39.960 --> 0:02:43.800 standing on a footbridge connecting Campbell Parade to the Bondai Pavilion, 0:02:44.160 --> 0:02:49.040 a massively popular thoroughfare at that iconic site, firing shots 0:02:49.160 --> 0:02:49.840 into the crowd. 0:02:50.280 --> 0:02:50.440 Now. 0:02:50.480 --> 0:02:53.280 Speaking at a press conference on Sunday night, New South 0:02:53.320 --> 0:02:56.760 Wales Premier Chris Mins said the attack was quote designed 0:02:56.880 --> 0:02:59.000 to target Sydney's Jewish community. 0:02:59.400 --> 0:03:02.000 And we know that because police are saying the shooters 0:03:02.040 --> 0:03:06.000 were clearly targeting a religious celebration in Bondai. It only 0:03:06.120 --> 0:03:09.240 took a couple of hours for officials to make that declaration. 0:03:10.040 --> 0:03:12.320 Tell me how they made that connection. 0:03:12.600 --> 0:03:15.440 Yeah, Well, hundreds of people had gathered to celebrate the 0:03:15.480 --> 0:03:18.200 start of the Jewish festival of Hanakah. There was this event, 0:03:18.320 --> 0:03:21.560 Haneker by the Sea, which started at five pm in 0:03:21.680 --> 0:03:25.519 Bondi Beach Park, right next to a children's playground. And 0:03:25.639 --> 0:03:28.600 this really was a family celebration in every sense. We 0:03:28.720 --> 0:03:33.760 had live entertainment, activities, music games. It was billed as 0:03:33.960 --> 0:03:37.880 a fun for all ages event on the promotions, the posters. 0:03:38.520 --> 0:03:40.800 So there was that going on in the middle of 0:03:41.160 --> 0:03:43.920 you know what is already typically a really popular and 0:03:44.080 --> 0:03:47.080 busy part of Bondai, especially at this time of year. 0:03:47.440 --> 0:03:51.280 People swimming in the beach, having picnics nearby, attending the 0:03:51.360 --> 0:03:55.680 many restaurants and bars and venues surrounding festive celebrations. There 0:03:55.680 --> 0:03:59.320 would have been several thousands of people in the vicinity, 0:03:59.680 --> 0:04:03.680 but the gunmen were clearly aiming towards that gathering of 0:04:03.920 --> 0:04:05.840 a Jewish community celebration. 0:04:05.840 --> 0:04:09.240 And things changed very quickly. Give me the latest on 0:04:09.360 --> 0:04:11.280 the death toll and do we know how many people 0:04:11.280 --> 0:04:11.840 are injured. 0:04:12.200 --> 0:04:16.280 At the time of recording, sixteen people are dead, Fifteen 0:04:16.320 --> 0:04:19.840 of those killed were victims, and one gunman is dead. 0:04:20.240 --> 0:04:23.760 So we heard Premier Chris Mins confirming the victims' age 0:04:23.839 --> 0:04:27.880 Rangers on Monday morning as from as young as ten 0:04:28.360 --> 0:04:31.040 to as old as eighty seven. Now, in terms of the wounded, we know 0:04:34.400 --> 0:04:37.799 dozens of people were treated for injuries at the scene, 0:04:38.120 --> 0:04:42.080 many hospitalized, many remain in a critical condition. Give 0:05:51.360 --> 0:05:53.960 me a sense of what it means when authorities say 0:05:54.000 --> 0:05:58.000 that something is a terrorist incident, and what that changes yeah. 0:05:58.040 --> 0:06:04.160 A terror attack essentially means that the motivations of the attackers, 0:06:04.279 --> 0:06:10.240 the offenders are in some way politically motivated, religiously motivated. 0:06:10.440 --> 0:06:12.560 It is a targeted attack. 0:06:12.560 --> 0:06:16.040 That is designed to inflict terror as well and designed 0:06:16.040 --> 0:06:18.760 to scare not just those at the beach, but all 0:06:18.839 --> 0:06:20.039 of Australia exactly. 0:06:20.120 --> 0:06:23.120 And also when we have an incident declared a terror incident, 0:06:23.600 --> 0:06:28.560 it elevates the response from law enforcement authorities and that's 0:06:28.640 --> 0:06:31.640 exactly what we have seen here in New South Wales. 0:06:31.720 --> 0:06:34.720 So during a press conference late on Sunday night, the 0:06:34.839 --> 0:06:38.200 New South Wales Police Commissioner mal Lanyon said that as 0:06:38.240 --> 0:06:41.280 a result of the circumstances of the attack as we've 0:06:41.360 --> 0:06:45.760 described Sam that he declared this to be a terrorist incident. However, 0:06:46.240 --> 0:06:50.280 police are yet to speculate on motive or ideology. So 0:06:50.400 --> 0:06:53.280 we know that it was a targeted anti Semitic attack, 0:06:53.600 --> 0:06:58.039 but we don't yet have more detail on motive. Lanyon said, quote, 0:06:58.120 --> 0:07:01.680 we will have a significant investstigation. No stone will be 0:07:01.800 --> 0:07:05.800 left unturned. This type of disgraceful activity, this wanton use 0:07:05.880 --> 0:07:10.080 of violence, the taking of innocent lives, is unacceptable. They were removed 0:07:44.320 --> 0:07:47.400 by New South Wales Police's Rescue and Bomb Disposal unit 0:07:47.720 --> 0:07:50.600 and we're still waiting for more on the analysis of 0:07:50.880 --> 0:07:52.320 those suspicious devices. 0:07:52.760 --> 0:07:55.720 One of the key parts of the powers given to 0:07:55.880 --> 0:07:58.840 police in a terrorism declaration is also the way that 0:07:58.920 --> 0:08:01.920 they can search people and properties as well much faster. 0:08:02.640 --> 0:08:04.360 They don't have to go through some of the regular 0:08:04.480 --> 0:08:07.600 court systems, fee less of that red tape exactly. That doesn't mean that investigators aren't on 0:08:36.920 --> 0:08:40.959 alert for other potential threats or even retaliatory violence, but 0:08:41.040 --> 0:08:43.679 it does mean that there's no evidence yet that we 0:08:43.840 --> 0:08:45.959 have been made aware of to indicate that there is 0:08:46.440 --> 0:08:48.959 that other threat. You're right, Sam, there was a bit 0:08:49.040 --> 0:08:52.720 of confusion around how many perpetrators, how many gunmen talk 0:08:52.800 --> 0:08:56.280 online of perhaps a third shooter, but in an update 0:08:56.360 --> 0:08:59.439 on Monday, police confirmed they were satisfied that there were 0:08:59.480 --> 0:09:03.640 two offenders involved in the shooting. One, a fifty year 0:09:03.640 --> 0:09:07.319 old man, is deceased. The second is a twenty four 0:09:07.440 --> 0:09:09.719 year old man. Now he is in a critical but 0:09:09.840 --> 0:09:14.520 stable condition in hospital under police guard. Police have also 0:09:14.679 --> 0:09:18.360 confirmed that both gunmen were a father and son, so 0:09:18.440 --> 0:09:21.760 we're talking about a father and son duo, and as 0:09:21.880 --> 0:09:25.960 part of their investigations, counter Terror Police conducted two search 0:09:26.080 --> 0:09:29.240 warrants on Sunday night. So the father and son were 0:09:29.240 --> 0:09:33.239 staying at a Campsy address. That's a suburb in Sydney's southwest, 0:09:33.640 --> 0:09:36.559 but they lived in Bonnie Rig in the city's west, 0:09:36.720 --> 0:09:39.400 so both properties were raided and. 0:09:39.480 --> 0:09:42.880 So what did police find at those two properties. 0:09:43.240 --> 0:09:45.520 We know that the fifty year old gunman, so that 0:09:45.720 --> 0:09:48.079 is the gunman who died at the scene. He was 0:09:48.240 --> 0:09:53.000 a licensed gun owner of six firearms. Commissioner Olnyon said 0:09:53.120 --> 0:09:56.600 that he was satisfied that those six firearms were recovered 0:09:56.640 --> 0:10:00.560 from the scene in Bondai on Sunday night. Year old 0:10:00.960 --> 0:10:04.440 owned six guns, had licenses for them and used those 0:10:04.520 --> 0:10:07.920 weapons to carry out this terror attack. It felt like 0:13:00.120 --> 0:13:03.080 I was looking at a car park of emergency vehicles. 0:13:03.559 --> 0:13:06.360 We saw this massive effort. It wasn't just emergency respondents, 0:13:06.400 --> 0:13:09.280 it was also civilians. Dominic Morgan is the Ambulance 0:13:34.400 --> 0:13:37.360 Commissioner for New South Wales and they confirmed that first 0:13:37.440 --> 0:13:40.200 crews were on the scene within less than ten minutes 0:13:40.360 --> 0:13:42.960 of the first reports of the shooting, and more than 0:13:43.000 --> 0:13:46.160 one hundred and twenty three personnel from New South Wales 0:13:46.240 --> 0:13:50.040 Ambulance were in Bondai on Sunday night helping and working 0:13:50.160 --> 0:13:53.800 with police. Commissioner Morgan made the point that first responders 0:13:53.960 --> 0:13:57.840 learned some really important lessons from the Bondai Westfield stabbing attack. 0:13:58.200 --> 0:14:01.160 Of course, so much pain and trauma in this one 0:14:01.360 --> 0:14:04.960 pocket of Sydney, so the Commissioner Morgan said that command 0:14:05.040 --> 0:14:08.559 structures were seamless on Sunday night that the ability for 0:14:08.679 --> 0:14:11.319 paramedics with the support of police to work in these 0:14:11.400 --> 0:14:15.520 hot zones, he is absolutely convinced contributed to the saving 0:14:15.640 --> 0:14:19.080 of lives that otherwise would have been lost. And then in a whole other part of 0:15:14.320 --> 0:15:18.360 the events that were unfolding, there's one civilian in particular 0:15:18.560 --> 0:15:21.640 who's gone viral for their contribution, right exactly. 0:15:21.920 --> 0:15:25.560 You probably by now have seen that viral footage of 0:15:25.640 --> 0:15:28.680 a man believed to be Ahmed al Ahmed. He is 0:15:28.920 --> 0:15:33.000 a fruit shop owner from Sutherland in Sydney's Shire who 0:15:33.320 --> 0:15:37.120 confronted one of the gunmen, wrestled the firearm from him 0:15:37.160 --> 0:15:40.280 and pointed it towards the gunman. He is rightly being 0:15:40.360 --> 0:15:43.480 celebrated as a hero around the world.
