Because the Irish were a colony of England, 0:10:55.480 --> 0:10:58.280 the whole population were tenant farmers. All power on the 0:10:58.320 --> 0:11:01.840 island came from English landowners. In nineteen sixteen, with 0:12:05.400 --> 0:12:07.800 World War One and media rez a group of Irish 0:12:07.800 --> 0:12:11.440 revolutionaries tried to overthrow their colonial oppressor. They succeeded in 0:12:11.480 --> 0:12:13.960 taking over a chunk of Dublin and declaring an Irish 0:12:14.000 --> 0:12:16.720 Republic for like a couple of days before the British 0:12:16.760 --> 0:12:19.079 sailed in a battleship and pounded the city with naval 0:12:19.120 --> 0:12:22.720 guns from the sea. As tragic as the Easter Rising was, 0:12:23.160 --> 0:12:25.679 it played a key role in leading to the Treaty 0:12:25.679 --> 0:12:28.880 Settlement in nineteen twenty one that brought the Irish some 0:12:29.080 --> 0:12:32.400 manner of independence. Basically, it's carved into you got your 0:12:32.440 --> 0:12:34.520 Northern Ireland, which is still a part of the UK, 0:12:35.280 --> 0:12:37.559 but you've got your Republic of Ireland now, which is 0:12:37.600 --> 0:12:40.360 you know, the capitals in Dublin, and it's like the 0:12:40.400 --> 0:12:43.400 bulk of the island, which is not Again, still a 0:12:43.400 --> 0:12:46.160 lot of people angry about the partitioning of Ireland, but 0:12:46.200 --> 0:12:50.160 it's a better situation than had existed before. Um So 0:12:50.679 --> 0:12:52.839 the modern Republic of Ireland comes about as a result 0:12:52.840 --> 0:12:55.679 of this process, and in nineteen thirties seven, the Irish 0:12:55.720 --> 0:12:59.319 government drafts a constitution. Now, if you've been paying attention 0:12:59.360 --> 0:13:01.840 through this very reef overview of Irish history, you'll note 0:13:01.920 --> 0:13:04.920 that the Catholic Church pretty important to the Irish who 0:13:04.960 --> 0:13:08.520 want independence, right, kind of a big, big deal for them, 0:13:08.559 --> 0:13:10.640 and for most of the his the history of like 0:13:10.679 --> 0:13:13.839 the Irish independence movement, the Catholic Church has been kind 0:13:13.840 --> 0:13:17.720 of a countercultural and liberatory force. Being Catholic was a 0:13:17.800 --> 0:13:21.960 symbol of resistance to the Crown. Now in nineteen you know, 0:13:22.080 --> 0:13:24.679 thirty seven, when they're making this new constitution, the Republic 0:13:24.679 --> 0:13:27.920 of Ireland is completely fucking broke. They've got no goddamn 0:13:27.920 --> 0:13:30.200 money because the English had spent seven hundred years or 0:13:30.200 --> 0:13:33.440 so robbing them blind, uh, and they especially did not 0:13:33.520 --> 0:13:36.880 have money for social services. What they had was the 0:13:36.920 --> 0:13:40.080 goodwill of the Catholic Church, who they wrote into their 0:13:40.080 --> 0:13:44.760 first Constitution as the primary provider of social services, particularly 0:13:44.960 --> 0:13:48.680 education for children. Now, that constitution did note that the 0:13:48.840 --> 0:13:52.800 rights of children were quote inalienable and imprescribable.
