But the co 1:35:16.479 --> 1:35:20.759 founders of this period of time are multi Grammy Award 1:35:20.840 --> 1:35:26.240 winning songwriter, producer Kenny Gamble, broadcaster Edwright, myself, and members 1:35:26.280 --> 1:35:29.719 of the Black Music Association. And it's the forty first 1:35:29.840 --> 1:35:37.440 anniversary of June Black Music Month. Tell us ab important Black? Absolutely, 1:35:37.880 --> 1:35:42.839 it's very important because the music industry generated twenty billion 1:35:42.920 --> 1:35:45.760 dollars last year. And when you look at the top 1:35:45.840 --> 1:35:47.280 of the charts right now, at the top of the 1:35:47.400 --> 1:35:51.559 one hundred list of top selling records, eight of those 1:35:51.640 --> 1:35:54.680 top ten records are by Black artists. You guys know 1:35:54.840 --> 1:35:58.639 that hip hop is the number one genre around the world, 1:35:58.760 --> 1:36:01.599 not just here in America, but all over the planet. 1:36:01.960 --> 1:36:05.320 So what does that tell us? Black people are making 1:36:05.479 --> 1:36:09.400 and selling a ton of music, and that's important because 1:36:09.439 --> 1:36:13.040 it's our culture and it's indigenous to America. You talk 1:36:13.080 --> 1:36:16.320 about those billions of dallas, you know, I think a 1:36:16.360 --> 1:36:18.200 lot of it is not trickled down to the artists. 1:36:18.200 --> 1:36:20.120 A lot of us is not trickled down to the producer. 1:36:20.240 --> 1:36:23.280 A lot it's not trickled down to the actual singer, 1:36:23.360 --> 1:36:25.479 which is very, very sad. That's been going on for a long time, 1:36:37.280 --> 1:36:40.160 which is why as a proud member of the National 1:36:40.360 --> 1:36:44.280 Museum of African American Music based in Nashville, we will 1:36:44.280 --> 1:36:48.479 be opening September twenty twenty. It is an institution designed 1:36:48.560 --> 1:36:52.880 to highlight the contributions of black folks in this country 1:36:52.960 --> 1:36:56.439 from the sixteen hundreds onto now. But we are also 1:36:56.600 --> 1:37:01.040 fighting for artists to get more, not just artists, reducers, engineers, 1:37:01.439 --> 1:37:04.360 music makers in general to get a larger piece of 1:37:04.520 --> 1:37:07.559 this twenty billion dollars. And and be back to your 1:37:07.640 --> 1:37:11.040 question about why is June Black Music Month important, Well, 1:37:11.280 --> 1:37:14.639 this is a multibillion dollar business. And I might add it's the everyday 1:37:31.760 --> 1:37:36.400 man and woman who's enriching the coffers of those major 1:37:36.520 --> 1:37:40.040 record companies. We want our fair share. So the museum 1:37:40.280 --> 1:37:45.200 is a repository. We have over seven galleries of beautiful 1:37:45.240 --> 1:37:50.320 information artifacts about our contribution. We were forced immigrants to this country and 1:37:54.640 --> 1:37:58.360 music is what we use to soothe us in this 1:37:58.960 --> 1:38:02.920 terrible you know, situation where we were taken from our 1:38:03.240 --> 1:38:07.120 original homes in Africa, brought over here and free labor 1:38:07.400 --> 1:38:10.000 for four hundred years. So what you hear in our 1:38:10.120 --> 1:38:14.280 music is passion, it's joy, it's pain, and it's our 1:38:14.400 --> 1:38:17.719 soundtrack every day. I wrote him and asked him 1:39:36.560 --> 1:39:39.400 to host a similar event. Well, the White House came 1:39:39.439 --> 1:39:41.760 back and said, well, we've gone through the archives and 1:39:41.880 --> 1:39:45.479 we see where President Carter declared June black Music Month. 1:39:45.840 --> 1:39:50.120 But go get us some legislation. Come back, President Clinton 1:39:50.400 --> 1:39:53.639 will sign a proclamation and we'll celebrate June Black Music 1:39:53.760 --> 1:39:58.160 Month officially from the perspective of the White House and Congress. 1:39:58.479 --> 1:40:00.799 So I put on my most comfortable pair of shoes 1:40:01.240 --> 1:40:05.360 and started walking office to office on Capitol Hill, knocking 1:40:05.400 --> 1:40:09.599 on people's doors, writing letters.
