You know, 0:05:44.400 --> 0:05:48.760 how much money people make, their education levels, their ethnic makeup, 0:05:48.800 --> 0:05:50.359 and that's what we're going to focus on today and 0:05:50.400 --> 0:05:53.279 so forth. And we have we're able to chart this 0:05:53.400 --> 0:05:56.560 data since the beginning of the first census that we 0:05:56.600 --> 0:06:01.039 ever did in this country. And something that's interesting and 0:06:01.120 --> 0:06:04.440 I thought was we're talking about today, is for the 0:06:04.480 --> 0:06:09.960 first time, the number of white people fell according to 0:06:10.000 --> 0:06:12.280 the census. Now, I have a report here, it's from 0:06:12.320 --> 0:06:15.960 the Washington Post, and I'll read a little bit from it. 0:06:16.760 --> 0:06:19.400 The report marks the first time the absolute number of 0:06:19.440 --> 0:06:23.440 people who identify as white alone has shrunk since the 0:06:23.480 --> 0:06:26.800 census started being taken in seventeen ninety. The number of 0:06:26.839 --> 0:06:31.080 people identifying as non Hispanic white and no other race 0:06:31.480 --> 0:06:34.760 dropped by five point one million people to one hundred 0:06:34.800 --> 0:06:37.600 and ninety one point seven million, a decrease of two 0:06:37.680 --> 0:06:41.760 point six percent. The country also passed two more milestones 0:06:41.760 --> 0:06:45.479 on its way to becoming a majority minority society in 0:06:45.520 --> 0:06:48.159 the coming decades. For the first time, the portion of 0:06:48.200 --> 0:06:51.200 white people dipped below sixty percent, slipping from sixty three 0:06:51.240 --> 0:06:54.320 point seven percent in twenty ten to fifty seven point 0:06:54.400 --> 0:06:57.880 eight percent in twenty twenty, and the under eighteen population 0:06:58.120 --> 0:07:01.360 is now majority people of color at fifty two point 0:07:01.400 --> 0:07:09.200 seven percent. They're 0:08:37.640 --> 0:08:39.400 not people who are like all black people need to 0:08:39.440 --> 0:08:41.640 die and all Mexican people need to go to Mexico. Like, 0:08:41.679 --> 0:08:44.880 they're not those people. But they're also not people who 0:08:44.920 --> 0:08:48.679 are really concerned about what goes on with black folks, 0:08:48.800 --> 0:08:51.280 and they're really just trying to focus on them. They found Jesus and they got 0:08:54.520 --> 0:08:56.520 a couple of shotguns, and they're like, listen, man, I 0:08:56.520 --> 0:08:58.680 don't know any black people. But I think that this also helps frame 0:11:10.040 --> 0:11:14.640 why there's that disconnect. The 0:13:25.720 --> 0:13:31.040 opioid epidemic and lower than anticipated birth rates among millennials 0:13:31.080 --> 0:13:37.480 after the Great Recession accelerated the white population's decline, and 0:13:37.480 --> 0:13:39.000 then it goes on to say Asian people, who made 0:13:39.080 --> 0:13:41.160 up about three percent of the population in nineteen ninety 0:13:41.160 --> 0:13:44.400 also dubbled the share shared to six point one percent, 0:13:44.440 --> 0:13:47.480 while black populations share held steady at twelve point one percent. 0:13:48.320 --> 0:13:54.080 So I want to also focus on the lower birth rates, 0:13:54.400 --> 0:13:59.000 lower than anticipated birth rates, and the opioid epidemic. So 0:13:59.080 --> 0:14:04.839 what happens is white people are also dying at a 0:14:04.840 --> 0:14:11.000 faster rate while they're failing to repopulate. And those two 0:14:11.080 --> 0:14:14.520 things make just the shifting. Because if the numbers are 0:14:14.559 --> 0:14:16.600 just shifting, I could point to nature and say like, yeah, 0:14:16.600 --> 0:14:19.640 that's just you know, there's people now identifying as two races, 0:14:19.760 --> 0:14:23.040 or there's you know, folks that are more comfortable checking 0:14:23.120 --> 0:14:26.240 a box and identifying with who they really are versus 0:14:26.800 --> 0:14:29.320 you know whatever. I can make up a bunch of 0:14:29.320 --> 0:14:31.360 stuff like that, and people can excuse it. But when 0:14:31.400 --> 0:14:33.720 you look at the statistics to say people are dying 0:14:34.920 --> 0:14:37.920 at a way higher rate, and they're pointing to an epidemic, 0:14:38.040 --> 0:14:41.560 the opioid epidemic and saying that, you know, the birth 0:14:41.600 --> 0:14:45.000 rates are falling, then it becomes like, oh, wow, do 0:14:45.040 --> 0:14:47.320 we panic? And I think it's important for us to 0:14:47.440 --> 0:14:52.000 understand that the reality for our Caucasian brothers and sisters 0:14:52.920 --> 0:14:56.120 might be shifting, and there might be a basis for 0:14:57.000 --> 0:15:03.840 this fear that some of these folks have. There might 0:15:03.880 --> 0:15:10.040 be a basis for this paranoia. And when there's a 0:15:10.080 --> 0:15:12.480 basis for it, and someone gives them the right narrative, 0:15:12.640 --> 0:15:17.320 then it's easy to go down that path.
