That's the version of Belize that gets promoted 0:05:08.440 --> 0:05:14.719 on travel sites. White sandy beaches, sparkling turquoise water, scuba 0:05:14.760 --> 0:05:20.440 diving in coral reefs. But McAfee being McAfee, decided to 0:05:20.480 --> 0:05:23.279 make his base of operations for his first years in 0:05:23.320 --> 0:05:27.680 Belize in a town called orange Walk, which was something 0:05:27.720 --> 0:05:33.080 else altogether. Here's Jules Vasquez, the news director of Channel 0:05:33.160 --> 0:05:37.880 seven News, a TV station in Belize. I would see 0:05:38.080 --> 0:05:44.360 the difference is it's a rural, agrarian community as opposed 0:05:44.400 --> 0:05:52.080 to tourist tone. There are no white men living in 0:05:52.120 --> 0:05:55.760 that area of orange Walk where you was. Orange Walk 0:05:55.960 --> 0:05:59.880 is on the mainland. It's a poorer community. So it was here that McAfee decided 0:06:07.839 --> 0:06:11.240 to build the laboratory. He said he was developing a 0:06:11.279 --> 0:06:15.520 new sort of antibiotic derived from rare plants that grow 0:06:15.600 --> 0:06:19.960 wild in the Belizian rainforest. This research would build upon 0:06:20.040 --> 0:06:24.600 a real emerging area of medicine called quorum sensing, which 0:06:24.640 --> 0:06:29.839 studies how bacteria communicate. The basis for McAfee's research sounds 0:06:29.880 --> 0:06:35.400 pretty technical. Here's Jeff Weiss again. It was a 0:07:06.320 --> 0:07:11.720 tantalizing prospect. And he also employed a biologist and she 0:07:11.880 --> 0:07:16.200 had actually done some work. He spent on housing police officers, brought them 0:11:02.040 --> 0:11:07.600 m sixteens, tasers, handcuffs, pepper spray, and metal detectors. He 0:11:07.720 --> 0:11:12.760 gave the Coastguard a million dollar boat, and he seemed 0:11:12.880 --> 0:11:16.960 especially focused on crime in the town of Carmelita, near 0:11:17.040 --> 0:11:21.200 his Orange Walk home. A twenty twelve profile in Wired 0:11:21.280 --> 0:11:25.000 magazine says McAfee paid officers to patrol the streets when 0:11:25.040 --> 0:11:28.360 they were supposed to be off duty. He apparently told 0:11:28.400 --> 0:11:31.720 them to sniff out drug dealers. Now, Belize does have one of the highest 0:12:11.320 --> 0:12:14.160 murder rates in the world, but when we looked at 0:12:14.200 --> 0:12:17.439 government issued crime maps, we saw that Orange Walk is 0:12:17.480 --> 0:12:22.120 not an especially dangerous area. Jules Vasquez told us that 0:12:22.160 --> 0:12:24.320 the town had a history of drug violence in the 0:12:24.400 --> 0:12:29.200 nineteen eighties, but it's not seriously violent anymore. The sense 0:12:29.240 --> 0:12:32.560 of danger appeared to be mostly in McAfee's own mind. 0:12:33.400 --> 0:12:37.840 McAfee built a sprawling property there. This is Tamara Sniffin, 0:12:38.200 --> 0:12:41.480 the editor of The Sampedro sum. It was as if he wanted 0:13:10.600 --> 0:13:14.040 to leave civilization as he knew it behind and built 0:13:14.080 --> 0:13:18.280 something new, something out of reach, where he could assert 0:13:18.400 --> 0:13:23.640 his own authority. There were also several teenaged girls living 0:13:23.720 --> 0:13:27.880 in McAfee's compound. He boasts about them in the documentary 0:13:27.920 --> 0:13:31.560 film Gringo. I live a lifestyle which might be over 0:13:31.559 --> 0:13:34.319 the line of normal behavior. I do have teenage girlfriends, and many at 0:13:40.360 --> 0:13:45.080 a time. Nothing illegal. They're well beyond the aged consent 0:13:45.320 --> 0:13:47.960 and I've seen nothing wrong with it. He could have five. It was very bizarre. In April twenty twelve, 0:15:46.880 --> 0:15:51.200 at six in the morning, Belize's Gang Suppression Unit stormed 0:15:51.280 --> 0:15:56.560 McAfee's Orange Walk compound. Jules Vasquez says, the Gang Suppression 0:15:56.680 --> 0:15:59.600 Unit officers are in a different league to the local 0:15:59.640 --> 0:16:06.800 police forces. They are a paramilitary, specialized police unit that 0:16:07.160 --> 0:16:10.960 should should primarily deal with the suppression of guns. But 0:16:11.680 --> 0:16:15.800 they're commander at the time, Marco Videal, you wished for 0:16:15.840 --> 0:16:20.040 them to have a much broader footprint in law enforcement, 0:16:20.600 --> 0:16:23.520 so he would have them pursue pretty much anything that 0:16:23.560 --> 0:16:26.760 it was felt that other units were too corrupt or 0:16:26.800 --> 0:16:33.520 compromised to pursue. However, it was his feeling.
