And it goes all 0:16:47.240 --> 0:16:53.920 the way back to MTL was represented as a response 0:16:54.120 --> 0:16:59.200 to black male rapists, and of course it was the 0:16:59.240 --> 0:17:04.600 southern white womanhood that had to be safeguarded by lynching 0:17:04.920 --> 0:17:10.520 black men. It wasn't about sexual assault. Lynching was necessary 0:17:10.640 --> 0:17:15.400 in order to preserve white womanhood. One can look at 0:17:15.480 --> 0:17:19.240 so many cases, the case of the Scotsboro Nine. These 0:17:19.320 --> 0:17:23.919 black men ended up spending decades of their lives behind bars, 0:17:24.000 --> 0:17:28.719 and many of them were sentenced to death because of 0:17:28.840 --> 0:17:35.680 the false claim on the part of white women and Scotsboro, Alabama, 0:17:35.760 --> 0:17:40.040 that they had been raped by these men. But what 0:17:40.119 --> 0:17:44.040 I want to say is that they've also been white 0:17:44.080 --> 0:17:48.200 women who resisted this, and I think it's important point 0:17:48.320 --> 0:17:53.200 that out as well. UH. In ninety three, an organization 0:17:53.640 --> 0:18:00.080 UH against Lynching was created by Southern white women. There 0:18:00.119 --> 0:18:07.199 are white women who genuinely want to participate in what 0:18:07.440 --> 0:18:09.879 is happening right now, but a lot of them aren't 0:18:09.960 --> 0:18:13.360 educated around the issues. So how can we help with that? 0:18:13.440 --> 0:18:15.960 When we started the Women's March, was four co chairs 0:18:15.960 --> 0:18:18.400 and one white woman, and we're sitting together one day 0:18:18.480 --> 0:18:23.200 and she said, I don't understand what racism and women's 0:18:23.240 --> 0:18:26.360 issues have to do one another.
