So, how many abortion clinics were there in 0:13:36.960 --> 0:13:42.520 Texas prior to this draconian move by Governor Abbot and 0:13:42.520 --> 0:13:49.280 how many are there today a week now post the decision? Right? Well, 0:13:49.320 --> 0:13:51.040 I think it's important to take this in the context 0:13:51.040 --> 0:13:55.720 of what abortion accesses look like in Texas. In twenty thirteen, 0:13:55.760 --> 0:13:58.319 a law was passed that essentially shuttered about half the 0:13:58.640 --> 0:14:03.160 clinics that were there. The law demanded that abortion clinics 0:14:03.720 --> 0:14:09.000 adhered to hospital regulation regulations and that providers would have 0:14:09.040 --> 0:14:11.720 admitting privileges in nearby hospitals, and that was impossible. The 0:14:11.720 --> 0:14:14.800 hospitals simply denied them admitting privileges, and therefore they couldn't 0:14:16.960 --> 0:14:19.120 grant abortion access in their clinics, so that shut it 0:14:19.240 --> 0:14:22.880 about half of them already, so abortion access prior to 0:14:23.240 --> 0:14:26.160 this six week ban was already difficult for a lot 0:14:26.160 --> 0:14:29.120 of people. There were a handful of clinics at best. 0:14:30.160 --> 0:14:32.040 Leading up to when the band was going to go 0:14:32.080 --> 0:14:34.960 into effect, there were anti abortion people. They're shining floodlights 0:14:35.000 --> 0:14:37.200 at the clinics, trying to look inside to see if 0:14:37.200 --> 0:14:41.680 they were going to be offering abortion services past the 0:14:41.720 --> 0:14:45.680 midnight deadline. They have been outside the clinics now harassing them, 0:14:45.720 --> 0:14:48.480 saying that they're going to turn them in. They're watching them. 0:14:48.520 --> 0:14:52.240 There's always fear of violence that's been escalated the clinics. 0:14:53.120 --> 0:14:55.280 Some it's not that they're shutting down, is that they 0:14:55.360 --> 0:14:59.200 simply can't provide services anymore. People aren't able to get 0:14:59.200 --> 0:15:02.320 to them in time. The six week ban is almost 0:15:02.360 --> 0:15:07.120 impossible to overcome. Most people do not know that they 0:15:07.120 --> 0:15:09.840 are pregnant within that timeframe. They don't even if you 0:15:09.880 --> 0:15:13.280 have a normal period, you aren't going to miss that 0:15:13.360 --> 0:15:15.880 period until five weeks. That gives you a week and 0:15:16.000 --> 0:15:19.840 Texas already has other laws in place, including mandatory waiting period, 0:15:19.880 --> 0:15:23.560 mandatory counseling that deny care. So the clinics just simply 0:15:23.600 --> 0:15:26.960 don't have anyone that they can help withness moments. And 0:15:26.960 --> 0:15:28.800 that's where they're having to send people out of state 0:15:29.000 --> 0:15:31.760 and therefore having to shift down because there's really nothing 0:15:31.800 --> 0:15:36.200 for them to do. Their hands are time. What happens 0:15:36.360 --> 0:15:39.800 now if I'm a woman that is in Texas, I'm 0:15:39.840 --> 0:15:42.120 a person that is in Texas because there are people 0:15:42.160 --> 0:15:45.880 with uteruses. If I'm a person that is in Texas 0:15:46.040 --> 0:15:50.320 and it is past the six week ban, right, you 0:15:50.440 --> 0:15:53.880 just laid that laid that timeline out. If I go 0:15:54.160 --> 0:15:57.120 to another state according to this law and then come 0:15:57.160 --> 0:16:02.680 back to Texas, what is what potentially can happen to me? Well, 0:16:02.680 --> 0:16:05.320 if you're the person who obtained the abortion out of 0:16:05.360 --> 0:16:09.680 state according to this law, nothing but if anyone in 0:16:09.720 --> 0:16:13.240 this state helped you, if anyone assisted you in any 0:16:13.280 --> 0:16:16.160 way leaving the state, according to this law, someone can 0:16:16.200 --> 0:16:18.960 turn them in. So if a parent helped you, if 0:16:19.000 --> 0:16:21.040 a partner helped you pay for it, if a friend 0:16:21.080 --> 0:16:23.720 helped you drive, if someone told you go to this 0:16:23.800 --> 0:16:27.360 website and they can help you get the funds, they 0:16:27.400 --> 0:16:31.680 can all be sued. And so while the person doesn't 0:16:31.720 --> 0:16:36.720 have any legal ramifications. The people that assisted them would 0:16:36.760 --> 0:16:41.280 be liable according to this law. I mean, this is 0:16:41.400 --> 0:16:45.200 just absolutely disgusting. And you know, the more that I 0:16:45.280 --> 0:16:48.440 unpack it and the more that I understand it, I don't. 0:16:49.280 --> 0:16:52.960 Can you explain to us why Democrats didn't see something 0:16:53.000 --> 0:16:56.360 like this coming? And why only now after the fact, 0:16:56.520 --> 0:16:59.480 we're hearing that the Department of Justice is looking into 0:16:59.640 --> 0:17:02.560 ways in which we can uphold Roe v.
