It's terrible, but it points to a 0:01:28.000 --> 0:01:32.039 bigger issue of human trafficking in this country, especially for 0:01:32.040 --> 0:01:35.480 force slabor. Remy is a former 0:01:39.480 --> 0:01:43.319 Navy seal who is now a filmmaker and he recently 0:01:43.319 --> 0:01:47.240 made a short film about human trafficking. In nineteen eighty five, at the age 0:02:16.160 --> 0:02:19.800 of nineteen, Irma was approached by a woman named Elnorra 0:02:19.919 --> 0:02:23.880 kayleem Limb. She offered Irma a job as a housekeeper 0:02:23.960 --> 0:02:27.640 at the kalem lim household in America. Elnorra and her 0:02:27.680 --> 0:02:32.239 husband Jefferson, were busy doctors and had three children. Irma 0:02:32.360 --> 0:02:35.000 was promised job stability and a steady income that she 0:02:35.040 --> 0:02:37.960 could send back to her family in the Philippines. She 0:02:38.040 --> 0:02:41.720 agreed to work for an initial five years. The family 0:02:41.720 --> 0:02:44.200 flew with her to America under the guise that she 0:02:44.280 --> 0:02:47.080 was one of their patients. She arrived in the United 0:02:47.120 --> 0:02:50.919 States on a tourist visa. The kalam Limbs reportedly knew 0:02:50.960 --> 0:02:53.440 how to bring a foreign citizen into the US to 0:02:53.480 --> 0:02:57.359 work legally, but they chose not to. Had they done that, 0:02:57.560 --> 0:03:00.280 they would have needed to sign an employer contract, pay 0:03:00.320 --> 0:03:03.560 her fair wages, and limit her duties to those appropriate 0:03:03.600 --> 0:03:07.520 for her job classification. But when she arrived, the family 0:03:07.520 --> 0:03:09.920 took her passport and told her she owed them for 0:03:09.960 --> 0:03:13.920 travel expenses. She worked seven days a week for sixteen 0:03:14.000 --> 0:03:17.400 hours a day, cleaning the home and caring for the children. 0:03:18.040 --> 0:03:21.480 If she slept past six am, Elinor and Jefferson would 0:03:21.520 --> 0:03:24.320 scold her and tell her that she should be concerned 0:03:24.520 --> 0:03:27.400 next time it happened. Because of this, they told 0:03:39.160 --> 0:03:42.000 her she couldn't walk around the neighborhood. She was never 0:03:42.040 --> 0:03:44.920 even allowed to open the front door. When the children 0:03:44.960 --> 0:03:47.600 came home from school, she would open the garage door 0:03:47.640 --> 0:03:50.920 from the inside so no one would see her. Despite 0:03:50.960 --> 0:03:54.800 both the Kayalam Limbs being doctors, they repeatedly denied Irma 0:03:54.880 --> 0:03:58.520 medical treatment. When Irma had a broken tooth, they refused 0:03:58.520 --> 0:04:00.800 to take her to a dentist, and when she was 0:04:00.840 --> 0:04:04.480 doubled over from menstrual cramps, Elinor ridiculed her and told 0:04:04.520 --> 0:04:08.040 her she would never have children. Jefferson would often get 0:04:08.080 --> 0:04:11.320 angry after drinking alcohol, and on one occasion threw a 0:04:11.360 --> 0:04:16.000 shoe at Irma. In the late nineties, one of the sons, Jack, 0:04:16.240 --> 0:04:20.039 brought home a girlfriend named Sherry. Sherry noticed Irma and 0:04:20.080 --> 0:04:24.719 became suspicious. After probing the family further, she eventually tipped 0:04:24.720 --> 0:04:28.919 off the US Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services. She 0:04:29.000 --> 0:04:31.920 broke down in tears during the call and stated that quote, 0:04:32.080 --> 0:04:34.800 no one should live under those conditions. That is just 0:04:34.880 --> 0:04:38.760 not humane. On September twenty ninth, two thousand and four, 0:04:39.240 --> 0:04:43.120 FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided the home 0:04:43.200 --> 0:04:46.160 with the surge warrant. The agents went into the basement 0:04:46.240 --> 0:04:49.359 and found a secret room they opened it and found 0:04:49.480 --> 0:04:53.320 Irma shaking in fear. She was thirty eight years old. 0:04:53.880 --> 0:04:57.039 After her rescue, Irma was granted a tea visa for 0:04:57.120 --> 0:05:01.960 trafficking victims. As it turns out, in nineteen years, Irma's 0:05:02.000 --> 0:05:05.280 family received only nineteen thousand dollars from the Kalem Limbs. 0:05:05.920 --> 0:05:08.120 The Kalem Limbs were ordered to pay back over nine 0:05:08.200 --> 0:05:11.520 hundred thousand dollars in back wages and were sentenced to 0:05:11.520 --> 0:05:15.680 four years in prison each. About the case, acting US 0:05:15.720 --> 0:05:19.719 Attorney Michelle Jacobs said, quote, human trafficking is a form 0:05:19.760 --> 0:05:23.279 of modern day slavery and is simply not acceptable. No 0:05:23.400 --> 0:05:26.960 person should ever be forced to live in fear, virtual isolation, 0:05:27.200 --> 0:05:32.480 and servitude. Wow, because of 0:11:50.160 --> 0:11:53.760 how many resources come out of Nigeria, but also how 0:11:53.840 --> 0:12:00.520 intelligent Nigerian people are, like just like just brilliant minds. Yeah, 0:11:59.640 --> 0:12:03.560 and so because of all the resources, my dad was like, 0:12:03.679 --> 0:12:06.679 Nigeria needs to be like the US. So buy a plot of land 0:12:24.760 --> 0:12:27.600 and create like this massive wall street in Nigeria with 0:12:27.920 --> 0:12:31.800 people from all around the world can come and do 0:12:31.880 --> 0:12:36.320 business and trade and look at Nigeria, look at Africa 0:12:36.360 --> 0:12:37.080 in a different way. 0:12:37.160 --> 0:12:39.040 He was very passionate about his people. 0:12:39.480 --> 0:12:43.320 So he bought this massive plot of land almost the 0:12:43.320 --> 0:12:47.280 size of a small city called Amerco, and he was 0:12:47.400 --> 0:12:50.800 going to use that land to develop his African Wall Street. 0:12:51.000 --> 0:12:53.040 And it was a military coup in the seventies. 0:12:53.440 --> 0:12:56.240 And when a military coup happened, the land got taken 0:12:56.240 --> 0:12:59.880 by the new military regime and everything was just thrown. 0:13:00.040 --> 0:13:02.760 The politicians were executed. I mean, it was just it 0:13:02.840 --> 0:13:04.600 was just crazy, how heartbreaking. 0:13:05.200 --> 0:13:07.680 He waited for the Nigerian government to get reinstalled and 0:13:07.800 --> 0:13:10.000 eventually didn't want to say, Like it was the late 0:13:10.040 --> 0:13:13.560 seventies in the early eighties and democracy was re established 0:13:13.559 --> 0:13:15.800 and he started going to court and started fighting the 0:13:15.880 --> 0:13:18.640 Nigerian government. And that's kind of around the time I 0:13:18.760 --> 0:13:23.120 was born. Like around that time, the Nigerians federal government. 0:13:23.600 --> 0:13:25.240 I said to my dad, Okay, what do you want. 0:13:25.360 --> 0:13:29.319 We have we proved that this land was yours. I 0:13:29.400 --> 0:13:32.360 can't give you this land back, you know, but you 0:13:32.400 --> 0:13:35.040 want your money back because he spent eight million pounds 0:13:35.040 --> 0:13:37.480 at the time. They offered him the money back and 0:13:37.520 --> 0:13:39.720 he said, no, I don't want the money back. I 0:13:39.760 --> 0:13:41.480 want another plot of land. And they said, we're not 0:13:41.480 --> 0:13:43.679 going to give you another plot of land.
