What was behind that? I think I could do fifteen. They were certainly no brighter, 0:06:17.040 --> 0:06:19.000 but many were not as bright as the people out 0:06:19.000 --> 0:06:20.880 in the real world that had to run a seven 0:06:20.880 --> 0:06:25.839 eleven store or a farm supply business. And that was 0:06:26.040 --> 0:06:29.279 kind of I mean, that's not anti enlightenment, but it's 0:06:29.920 --> 0:06:33.560 it's trying to remind America that it doesn't really matter 0:06:33.839 --> 0:06:39.000 what your degrees or your alphabet alphabetic cluster is behind 0:06:39.040 --> 0:06:41.800 your name, if you're not practical. We really saw that 0:06:41.880 --> 0:06:45.040 during the COVID with the careers of Dr Fauci, Dr 0:06:45.160 --> 0:06:47.880 Collins and others. I think, I think that's so fascinating 0:06:47.920 --> 0:06:49.800 because you know, right now there's sort of the schism 0:06:49.800 --> 0:06:52.159 in the country, and you know, you you look at 0:06:52.200 --> 0:06:54.560 the left particularly, and they've really become this party of 0:06:54.600 --> 0:06:57.440 elite and very disconnected from a lot of Americans who 0:06:57.839 --> 0:06:59.719 you know, have a working class background. And that's an 0:06:59.720 --> 0:07:02.039 interest saying for you because you've sort of been in 0:07:02.120 --> 0:07:03.880 both worlds where you'd have been in this sort of 0:07:03.880 --> 0:07:07.600 this elite academia while simultaneously having you know, sort of 0:07:07.640 --> 0:07:10.360 a rule and working class background. Yeah, I think so. 0:07:10.400 --> 0:07:12.240 I'll give you one example. I came. I grew up 0:07:12.320 --> 0:07:15.040 hunting on this farm, and I had we had every 0:07:15.040 --> 0:07:18.360 generation about three or four guns. So the time I 0:07:18.400 --> 0:07:22.160 took over my great great great grandmother's house, the Victorian 0:07:22.200 --> 0:07:25.040 farmhouse that I have, I maybe had twenty guns, but 0:07:25.120 --> 0:07:27.040 they were all old, you know, and I never saw 0:07:27.080 --> 0:07:30.080 them as weapons. But then I noticed that when you 0:07:30.120 --> 0:07:33.240 live out here and that the environment was changing, that 0:07:33.280 --> 0:07:36.200 all your ideas about gun control don't mean anything, because 0:07:36.240 --> 0:07:39.080 what really means something is when at two in the morning, 0:07:39.240 --> 0:07:43.160 when two people on PCP don't speak English and throw 0:07:43.160 --> 0:07:46.320 a rock at your window and yell at you in Spanish, 0:07:46.320 --> 0:07:48.400 they're going to come in and break into your house 0:07:48.440 --> 0:07:51.760 and kill you. And the sheriff is forty miles away, 0:07:51.960 --> 0:07:55.240 forty minutes away, and your son who's ten, and your 0:07:55.320 --> 0:07:57.960 daughter who's eight, and your other daughter is six or crying. 0:07:58.080 --> 0:08:01.600 Then the only thing that protects you from the other world, 0:08:01.640 --> 0:08:05.600 the world of non civilization, is your ability to stop it. 0:08:06.160 --> 0:08:08.040 So I would get it. And then I walked them out, took the 0:08:31.400 --> 0:08:33.320 keys through them in the vineyard and said you're gonna 0:08:33.320 --> 0:08:36.480 walk to town. And I learned something from that, and 0:08:36.520 --> 0:08:39.280 that is that all the focism that I had been 0:08:39.280 --> 0:08:41.480 told as a child by neighbors, and I sort of 0:08:41.480 --> 0:08:43.120 wanted to get away from that and go to the 0:08:43.240 --> 0:08:46.320 university and meet people who were educated. And my parents 0:08:46.320 --> 0:08:48.400 had told me that because they were both educated, and 0:08:48.400 --> 0:08:50.199 they came back in the farm. My mother was one 0:08:50.200 --> 0:08:53.439 of the first women to graduate in Stamford Law School 0:08:53.440 --> 0:08:57.199 in nine and she was the first female appellate court 0:08:57.360 --> 0:08:59.680 judge in California. But yet she went back to the 0:08:59.720 --> 0:09:02.920 farm and her sixties she would pedal fruit with us, 0:09:03.000 --> 0:09:04.480 or my dad would get on the tracker. He was 0:09:04.480 --> 0:09:07.080 a JC administrator and they were running the farm. And 0:09:07.120 --> 0:09:11.040 they had told me, don't ever ever look down on 0:09:11.120 --> 0:09:13.720 your roots or working people, and they will always be 0:09:13.800 --> 0:09:16.199 there for you in a way that your academic friends 0:09:16.240 --> 0:09:18.360 will not. And they were so right. How has this 0:09:18.400 --> 0:09:21.400 all shaped your viewpoint on immigration? You know some of 0:09:21.400 --> 0:09:23.880 the stories you just told. Also, you know, working on 0:09:23.920 --> 0:09:26.040 a farm, growing up where you grew up, how has 0:09:26.080 --> 0:09:28.480 that shaped your viewpoint on immigration in the country. I 0:09:28.520 --> 0:09:33.120 think it's a tragedy because, say, yesterday I got up 0:09:33.240 --> 0:09:36.040 and I went to town. I talked to a guy 0:09:36.080 --> 0:09:38.880 who wants to paint my house. I went to home 0:09:38.920 --> 0:09:41.600 depot and got some parts I went to the diesel 0:09:41.679 --> 0:09:45.720 mechanic and got some fuel additive. But I didn't see 0:09:45.760 --> 0:09:49.800 anybody who was not Mexican American or from Mexico, and 0:09:49.840 --> 0:09:51.920 all of them were wonderful people, and I didn't even. 0:09:52.040 --> 0:09:53.880 I don't even at this point, because we're about eighty 0:09:53.880 --> 0:09:56.680 five percent Hispanic in this town that was once about 0:09:56.720 --> 0:10:00.560 eight white when I was a young kid. But the 0:10:00.600 --> 0:10:03.160 point of what I mean by tragic is every single 0:10:03.240 --> 0:10:07.320 person who came legally or is here legally, or came 0:10:07.679 --> 0:10:11.440 in a measured fashion uh and learned to speak English 0:10:11.440 --> 0:10:13.760 and got a high school to poema are are wildly 0:10:13.840 --> 0:10:17.679 successful that they're intermarried with different people from different backgrounds. 0:10:18.080 --> 0:10:21.200 It may be predominantly Hispanic, but we're getting to the 0:10:21.200 --> 0:10:24.520 point like the Italian immigration of the nineteenth century, where 0:10:25.000 --> 0:10:28.199 people who were Catholic and came from Sicily faced greater 0:10:28.280 --> 0:10:32.320 prejudice than Northern European Protestants. But by three generations, if 0:10:32.320 --> 0:10:36.480 your name was Juliana, Giuliani or Cuomo, nobody could determine 0:10:36.520 --> 0:10:40.120 your politics. And that was happening here. And then when 0:10:40.120 --> 0:10:43.840 we open the borders and people flood in, many of 0:10:43.840 --> 0:10:46.280 them from southern Mexico and that's the point that's never made. 0:10:46.360 --> 0:10:49.439 That people are not coming from the Northern province states 0:10:49.520 --> 0:10:53.800 as they used to, but Yucatan, Chiapas Oahaka, and they're 0:10:53.880 --> 0:10:56.920 much poorer. Some of them do not speak Spanish as 0:10:56.920 --> 0:11:01.120 their primary language. They peaked Uh, sort of a dialect 0:11:01.120 --> 0:11:05.120 mix of tech. They come up here, and as indigenous people, 0:11:05.240 --> 0:11:08.600 they've had a lot more prejudice in Mexico. They don't 0:11:08.600 --> 0:11:11.160 know English, and so they're much harder to assimilate. So 0:11:11.240 --> 0:11:15.160 at that very moment when immigration changed, and we should 0:11:15.160 --> 0:11:18.000 have been really doubled down on the melting pot. And 0:11:18.040 --> 0:11:20.920 I tried for twenty one years at cal State, where 0:11:20.960 --> 0:11:23.960 I had mostly Mexican American students. I tried to teach 0:11:24.000 --> 0:11:27.080 them Greek and Latin, made sure they read French and German. 0:11:27.240 --> 0:11:30.080 That got them into law schools, business schools. But it 0:11:30.120 --> 0:11:33.760 wasn't easy. And what I'm getting at is when these 0:11:33.760 --> 0:11:36.920 elites just throw open the borders and let people come 0:11:36.920 --> 0:11:40.240 in here illegally with no English and no high school 0:11:40.240 --> 0:11:44.559 diploma and not diverged. They're not coming from all over 0:11:44.600 --> 0:11:48.280 the world but from just one region, then it's so 0:11:48.360 --> 0:11:52.440 hard to integrate, assimilate, intermarry, immigrants, and they never suffer 0:11:52.559 --> 0:11:55.200 the consequences of their own ideology because they have the 0:11:55.240 --> 0:11:57.920 money and the influence to find a zip code or 0:11:57.920 --> 0:12:00.920 a geography that insulates them. Who does it fall most 0:12:00.920 --> 0:12:03.960 heavily on Mexican American people. If they came to my 0:12:04.000 --> 0:12:08.120 hometown and talked to a fourth generation, their generation, somebody 0:12:08.120 --> 0:12:13.240 of Mexican dissent, they would say, oh, Victory, it's hard 0:12:13.280 --> 0:12:14.959 to have a p when we have all these people 0:12:15.000 --> 0:12:17.080 coming in. And you know, these gang members attacked my 0:12:17.160 --> 0:12:20.079 grandson because he doesn't speak Spanish, and I don't even 0:12:20.080 --> 0:12:22.280 know who these people are. And when they get in 0:12:22.280 --> 0:12:24.400 erect they leave the scene of the accident, or they've 0:12:24.400 --> 0:12:26.920 got phony I d s. Or my wife is at 0:12:26.960 --> 0:12:30.200 the state dialysis center and it used to be an hour. 0:12:30.320 --> 0:12:33.360 Now they're waiting in line because all these immigrants don't 0:12:33.360 --> 0:12:36.800 have any healthcare and they don't and and they're here 0:12:36.800 --> 0:12:40.640 are legally excepted. So a lot of the opposition I 0:12:40.679 --> 0:12:43.520 think to the illegal immigration comes from the people that 0:12:43.600 --> 0:12:47.960 directly influences and but legal immigration, I think is a 0:12:47.960 --> 0:12:53.680 wonderful thing. And uh a true diversity of thought and 0:12:54.120 --> 0:12:56.760 different groups. And I grew up, you know, with an 0:12:57.160 --> 0:13:02.040 Armenian neighbor, Greek American neighbor, a Japanese American, a Mexican 0:13:02.080 --> 0:13:04.800 American neighbor, and where they all kidded each other about 0:13:04.800 --> 0:13:10.000 their ethnic faults or shortcomings. Uh, they all judge these 0:13:10.000 --> 0:13:12.439 each other on how well they farmed. It was incidental. 0:13:13.000 --> 0:13:15.800 So I'm really worried maybe you are too, at least 0:13:15.840 --> 0:13:20.320 about this Biden administration fixation on race, because I think 0:13:20.520 --> 0:13:24.360 there's never been a multiracial democracy except ours that work 0:13:24.480 --> 0:13:28.120 without you know, Soviet like coercion or the Ottoman coercion. 0:13:28.600 --> 0:13:31.680 And when we look around the world today, India is example, 0:13:31.760 --> 0:13:33.720 so is Brazil. I can't think of any others, and 0:13:33.720 --> 0:13:37.200 they don't do a very good job. And so it's 0:13:37.360 --> 0:13:41.400 we don't want to become the former Yugoslavia or Rwanda, Iraq. 0:13:42.040 --> 0:13:46.720 And yet Biden seems intent on emphasizing differences in grievances 0:13:46.800 --> 0:13:50.839 and victimizations rather than the melting pot assimilation and the 0:13:50.960 --> 0:13:53.200 dream of Martin Luther King. But what do you think 0:13:53.240 --> 0:13:55.400 is behind that? Because I've heard, you know, some of 0:13:55.440 --> 0:13:59.840 the words to describe the by administration. We've heard you know, communism, Marxist, socialist, 0:14:00.160 --> 0:14:03.520 they've sort of been used interchangeably to describe the administration. 0:14:04.080 --> 0:14:06.560 You know, are those distinctions important? And then you know, 0:14:06.600 --> 0:14:10.000 how would you label the Biden administration because I've heard 0:14:10.040 --> 0:14:13.040 a lot about you know, basically, instead of class warfare 0:14:13.320 --> 0:14:16.319 like the Marxist of the past, now it's racial divisions 0:14:16.320 --> 0:14:19.080 that they're driving in a similar fashion. One or the people around him that go 0:14:26.160 --> 0:14:30.000 in and out of academia or the law or politics, 0:14:30.160 --> 0:14:32.240 whoever has advising And I don't know if it's people 0:14:32.280 --> 0:14:35.280 around Kamala Harris or the Obama's or chief of staff, 0:14:35.280 --> 0:14:40.160 but they are influenced by this neo Marxist idea that 0:14:40.560 --> 0:14:44.280 there's a permanently oppressed class. But that has never worked, 0:14:44.920 --> 0:14:48.200 that meaning revolution has never worked in this country because 0:14:48.240 --> 0:14:52.320 of the successive market capitalism and upward mobility. So if 0:14:52.360 --> 0:14:54.360 you start off as a truck driver, you end up, 0:14:54.840 --> 0:14:56.760 you know, making pretty good money and you're not a 0:14:56.760 --> 0:15:00.320 class victim.
