Wade, 0:06:56.839 --> 0:06:59.800 the struggle for women's bodily autonomy and what hip hop 0:06:59.880 --> 0:07:01.839 is that to say about the topic over the years. 0:07:10.680 --> 0:07:14.080 So let's get into a little history about this epic 0:07:14.360 --> 0:07:17.920 landmarks Supreme Court ruling back in nineteen seventy three. So 0:07:18.000 --> 0:07:21.000 in nineteen sixte twenty two year old Texas resident Norman 0:07:21.040 --> 0:07:24.640 mccorby became pregnant with their third child. She decided two 0:07:24.680 --> 0:07:27.120 kids was enough, but in Texas, at the time, abortion 0:07:27.200 --> 0:07:30.200 was illegal except when necessary to save the mother's life 0:07:30.200 --> 0:07:32.360 and some m Corby, or Jane Roe, as she was 0:07:32.440 --> 0:07:35.080 known in the courts of the media, got a lawsuit 0:07:35.120 --> 0:07:38.520 in federal court against her local district attorney, Henry Wade, 0:07:38.880 --> 0:07:44.239 claiming that the law banning most abortions in Texas was unconstitutional. Now, first, 0:07:44.280 --> 0:07:46.400 the U. S. District Court of the Northern District of 0:07:46.440 --> 0:07:49.280 Texas ruled in her favor, but the Supreme Court of 0:07:49.280 --> 0:07:52.800 Texas appealed this directly to the Supreme Court, who would 0:07:52.800 --> 0:07:55.160 go on to hear the Roe v. Wade case. So 0:07:55.280 --> 0:07:58.679 in January of nineteen seventy three, the Supreme Court ruled 0:07:58.720 --> 0:08:01.240 seven to two that the you process clause of the 0:08:01.280 --> 0:08:05.040 fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, providing for the right of privacy, 0:08:05.200 --> 0:08:07.960 also protects a pregnant person's right to choose to have 0:08:08.000 --> 0:08:10.760 an abortion or not, which struck down many state and 0:08:10.840 --> 0:08:14.120 federal abortion laws. Of note, the author of the Supreme 0:08:14.160 --> 0:08:19.280 Court world view Wade opinion, Justice Harry Blackmun. Blackmun, I 0:08:19.360 --> 0:08:21.960 think so yeah. Well, he was a Nixon appointee, and 0:08:22.000 --> 0:08:24.000 he was joined by two of the other three Knicks 0:08:24.000 --> 0:08:26.280 and appointees at the time so there was a point 0:08:26.320 --> 0:08:32.360 in time in which Rob Wade enjoyed bipartisan support de 0:08:32.520 --> 0:08:36.280 facto by the you know, by right of their appointee, 0:08:36.400 --> 0:08:39.200 their appointment to the Court by Nixon. Eighteen states 0:10:03.080 --> 0:10:06.440 mandate that women be given counseling before abortions that include 0:10:06.440 --> 0:10:09.920 information on at least one of the following the purported 0:10:09.960 --> 0:10:13.640 link between abortion and breast cancer. At five states, the 0:10:13.679 --> 0:10:16.679 ability of a feat is to feel pain. That's in't 0:10:16.679 --> 0:10:20.520 thirteen states, or the long term mental health consequences for 0:10:20.559 --> 0:10:23.840 the woman, and that's in eight states. Twenty states require 0:10:23.840 --> 0:10:26.880 women seeking an abortion to wait a specified period of time, 0:10:26.960 --> 0:10:29.920 usually twenty four hours, between when she receives his counseling 0:10:30.240 --> 0:10:33.520 and when the procedure is performed. In thirty 0:11:01.440 --> 0:11:04.160 seven states requires some sort of parental involvement in the 0:11:04.240 --> 0:11:07.520 minor's decision to have an abortion.
