Wilberforce University is the first HBCU founded 1:22:23.640 --> 1:22:27.360 by people of African descent tell us about six eighteen 1:22:27.439 --> 1:22:30.639 fifty six in the state of Ohio. And just imagine 1:22:30.760 --> 1:22:35.600 eighteen fifty six was before the Emancipation Proclamation, and imagine 1:22:35.880 --> 1:22:39.160 a people who were enslaved having the audacity and the 1:22:39.280 --> 1:22:43.600 boldness to say, we can build and create an institutional 1:22:43.680 --> 1:22:46.479 higher learning. And so Wilberforce University came together as a 1:22:46.520 --> 1:22:50.559 result of the Aame Church and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 1:22:51.040 --> 1:22:55.600 and in eighteen fifty six in Cincinnati, it moved to 1:22:55.760 --> 1:22:59.880 a spot in Ohio called HuaHua Springs, which was a 1:23:00.120 --> 1:23:05.080 place where Southerners would come to winter, and it was 1:23:05.160 --> 1:23:09.240 a place where the underground railroad was prominent in the 1:23:09.360 --> 1:23:11.960 city of Xenia, and the city of Xenia had the 1:23:12.080 --> 1:23:16.120 distinction of having a large number of people of African 1:23:16.160 --> 1:23:20.400 descent who were free. And so Wilberforce came about as 1:23:20.479 --> 1:23:24.120 a result of this sort of bold experiment in terms 1:23:24.160 --> 1:23:26.559 of an institution of higher learning. Four people of African 1:23:26.600 --> 1:23:30.519 descent started with classical education, and so when it opened, 1:23:30.840 --> 1:23:33.920 it opened with about two hundred students, many of whom 1:23:34.520 --> 1:23:39.320 were the mixed race children of southern plantation owners who 1:23:39.400 --> 1:23:44.880 would come to Ohio, and unfortunately because of the Civil War, 1:23:45.400 --> 1:23:50.759 the university closed in eighteen in eighteen sixty three, because 1:23:50.960 --> 1:23:54.680 the southern plantation owners could not sustain their children and 1:23:54.800 --> 1:23:58.479 also the war effort. At the closure, the members of 1:23:58.560 --> 1:24:01.640 the African Methodist Church, the Amy Churchills many of you 1:24:01.760 --> 1:24:05.560 are probably aware of, Daniel Payne said let's open this 1:24:05.720 --> 1:24:08.880 school up for people of African descent, and so bought 1:24:08.960 --> 1:24:13.360 the mortgage and reopened Wilble Force in eighteen sixty three, 1:24:13.880 --> 1:24:17.120 and at that time he became the first African American 1:24:17.200 --> 1:24:20.320 man to be the president of a university in the 1:24:20.439 --> 1:24:23.160 United States. So was it something that had to be 1:24:23.320 --> 1:24:28.960 done under the radar, kind of in secret just because okay, no, no, no, 1:24:29.160 --> 1:24:33.800 it was. It was Again, there were there were white 1:24:33.880 --> 1:24:36.519 counterparts who were very much a part of the early 1:24:37.080 --> 1:24:39.800 opening of the university. There was not resistance because when the 1:24:43.040 --> 1:24:47.080 school reopened in eighteen sixty three, two years later, on 1:24:47.200 --> 1:24:50.599 the night that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, in fact, one 1:24:50.680 --> 1:24:53.840 of its main buildings on campus was burned down.
