He loved helping people. 0:07:17.280 --> 0:07:21.000 Friends and colleagues said he was kind, compassionate, and smart. 0:07:23.000 --> 0:07:26.120 Matt's three children, two daughters and a son, were his 0:07:26.320 --> 0:07:31.000 entire world. Patrick Tracy Burris. 0:12:00.960 --> 0:12:04.440 Patrick Tracy Burris was a spree killer who committed a 0:12:04.480 --> 0:12:08.360 string of murders in Gaffney, South Carolina, in Cherokee County. 0:12:09.240 --> 0:12:11.920 It started on June twenty seventh, two thousand and nine, 0:12:12.000 --> 0:12:15.000 when he fatally shot a peach farmer named Clein Cash 0:12:15.080 --> 0:12:18.360 in his home. Police found the next victims four days later, 0:12:19.000 --> 0:12:23.160 Hazel Linder and her daughter Gina Linder Parker. Both of 0:12:23.200 --> 0:12:26.600 them had been gunned down in their own homes. Then, 0:12:26.800 --> 0:12:30.280 on July second, Patrick came into a furniture store. He 0:12:30.360 --> 0:12:33.640 shot the owner, Stephen Tyler, and his daughter, Abbey, both 0:12:33.680 --> 0:12:37.880 of them later died. Law enforcement in the area were 0:12:37.960 --> 0:12:41.720 understandably panicked about a spree killer who was murdering and 0:12:41.800 --> 0:12:45.160 robbing citizens seemingly at random, and so was the community. 0:12:45.480 --> 0:12:48.400 They were wondering who is going to be next. On 0:12:48.520 --> 0:12:51.320 July sixth, two thousand and nine, Patrick got into a 0:12:51.320 --> 0:12:54.200 shootout with police and was fatally shot by an officer. 0:12:55.000 --> 0:12:58.400 Police later matched Patrick's twenty five caliber gun to the 0:12:58.480 --> 0:13:01.720 killings in Gaffney and found items from some of the 0:13:01.800 --> 0:13:05.240 victim's homes in his possession. They realized that he had 0:13:05.280 --> 0:13:09.080 been robbing people. Later, there was outrage when it was 0:13:09.120 --> 0:13:12.080 discovered that Patrick had been released from a ten year 0:13:12.160 --> 0:13:16.320 sentence early, which allowed him to commit these murders. There 0:13:16.320 --> 0:13:19.520 did seem to be some circumstantial similarities in that the 0:13:19.560 --> 0:13:23.640 crimes were seemingly totally random, but there were other differences. 0:13:23.880 --> 0:13:27.360 For one thing, Patrick's murders all happened in a small, 0:13:27.400 --> 0:13:31.920 confined area near Gaffney. Secondly, he didn't leave his victims alive, 0:13:32.000 --> 0:13:35.880 at least not knowingly. He shot everyone he encountered, though 0:13:35.920 --> 0:13:39.600 some of Patrick's victims died later in the hospital. And finally, 0:13:40.000 --> 0:13:43.760 Patrick stole things from the houses he went into. The 0:13:43.760 --> 0:13:46.040 police did take a hard look at him because he 0:13:46.120 --> 0:13:48.920 was a spree killer, and also he was very tall. 0:13:49.280 --> 0:13:53.120 The way Angel described Matt's killer. Patrick was over six 0:13:53.200 --> 0:13:57.920 foot five. The Morrisville Chief of Police, Karl Robbins, later 0:13:57.960 --> 0:14:01.400 addressed this, telling the media quote, we don't have anything 0:14:01.480 --> 0:14:04.040 that links him to us right now, other than that 0:14:04.080 --> 0:14:08.440 he's been in the general area end quote. The theory 0:14:08.480 --> 0:14:10.960 about Patrick being the killer seemed to be put to 0:14:11.040 --> 0:14:14.560 rest for good after law enforcement tested his guns. Patrick 0:14:14.720 --> 0:14:17.040 used a twenty five caliber weapon in all of his 0:14:17.120 --> 0:14:20.560 known kills, and that was the only firearm he was 0:14:20.600 --> 0:14:24.160 believed to own. Police also announced an eleven thousand 0:15:08.720 --> 0:15:11.960 dollars reward for anyone with any information that could help 0:15:12.080 --> 0:15:16.680 lead to Matt's killer. After the initial headlines, the case 0:15:16.920 --> 0:15:20.160 kind of seemed to fade away.
