The house had 0:01:08.880 --> 0:01:11.760 been selected by Crowley as the perfect place to conduct 0:01:11.760 --> 0:01:16.600 a magic ritual known as the Abramelon Operation The operation is, 0:01:16.640 --> 0:01:20.360 in principle, a spell to make contact with one's guardian angel, 0:01:21.240 --> 0:01:24.600 one that also requires calling forth the demons known as 0:01:24.640 --> 0:01:30.880 the Twelve Kings of Hell. The invocation required an ascetic concentration, 0:01:31.120 --> 0:01:34.920 which was to last an obligatory six months. Failure to 0:01:34.959 --> 0:01:38.560 adhere to the correct time frame could some believed leave 0:01:38.560 --> 0:01:42.880 a gateway open for the demons to escape. Crowley is 0:01:42.920 --> 0:01:45.080 thought to have begun the ritual in the Easter of 0:01:45.200 --> 0:01:50.880 nineteen hundred, but famously left it incomplete. Four years later, 0:01:51.240 --> 0:01:54.680 Crowley would finally make contact with his guardian angel. It 0:01:54.760 --> 0:01:57.360 was an event that would change his life forever, and 0:01:57.520 --> 0:02:01.120 one that has established Crowley in legend far beyond any 0:02:01.160 --> 0:02:15.360 of his peers. Kelly would later be known as Sir Gerald Kelly, 0:02:30.560 --> 0:02:35.040 President of the Royal Academy. After spending some time with 0:02:35.200 --> 0:02:39.120 Kelly at his family home in Strathpeffer in Scotland, Crowley 0:02:39.200 --> 0:02:43.200 met and became close to Gerald's sister, Rose Kelly, a 0:02:43.280 --> 0:02:49.040 widower now betrothed unhappily to another man. In a characteristically 0:02:49.120 --> 0:02:53.040 impulsive gesture, Crowley suggested she married him to ward off 0:02:53.080 --> 0:02:57.320 the unwanted suitor. The pair eloped the following day, on 0:02:57.400 --> 0:03:02.320 August the twelfth, nineteen o three. Despite the apparent flippancy 0:03:02.320 --> 0:03:05.359 of the gesture, it would seem that Crowley, a man 0:03:05.400 --> 0:03:08.160 who had always been enthralled to his own heightened sense 0:03:08.160 --> 0:03:12.720 of sexuality, felt a growing magnetism between them. Reveling in 0:03:12.720 --> 0:03:16.360 the scandalous behavior, Crowley and Rose returned to Boleskin House 0:03:16.520 --> 0:03:20.440 before embarking on an extended honeymoon to Cairo, and it 0:03:20.560 --> 0:03:25.640 is there that the story takes a peculiar turn. After 0:03:25.760 --> 0:03:28.360 arriving in Cairo, in what had become a feature of 0:03:28.400 --> 0:03:33.200 Crowley's life, Alister adopted the pseudonym Prince Choya Khan. Rose, at least to Crowley's mind, seemed to 0:06:00.960 --> 0:06:05.080 be telling the truth. Crowley was convinced further when he 0:06:05.120 --> 0:06:07.920 looked down to find the exhibition number of the artifact. 0:06:09.360 --> 0:06:24.920 The number was six six six six sixty six, as 0:06:24.960 --> 0:06:27.159 many will know, is equated with the number of the 0:06:27.160 --> 0:06:30.960 beast as depicted in the Book of Revelation. To Crowley, however, it meant 0:06:39.200 --> 0:06:43.560 something a little different. It was Crowley's mother who first 0:06:43.600 --> 0:06:47.000 labeled him the Beast, presumably in reaction to a young 0:06:47.080 --> 0:06:52.279 Crowley's burgeoning rejection of the family's puritanical beliefs. As 0:10:02.400 --> 0:10:05.920 the author Colin Wilson points out, there is nothing particularly 0:10:05.920 --> 0:10:09.040 original about the text, comparing it as he does, to 0:10:09.120 --> 0:10:12.400 the far Superior Man and Superman by George Bernard Shaw, 0:10:13.040 --> 0:10:16.000 as well as pointing out its clear indebtedness to the 0:10:16.000 --> 0:10:20.440 philosophy of Nietzsche. However, it does suggest that Crowley was 0:10:20.480 --> 0:10:25.320 more than the brainless charlatan his detractors would have him be. Certainly, 0:10:25.360 --> 0:10:28.360 for Crowley at least, the text was nothing less than 0:10:28.400 --> 0:10:32.080 the Bible for his new religion, an attempt to obliterate 0:10:32.200 --> 0:10:35.880 the reigning monotheistic religions and usher in a new epoch 0:10:35.920 --> 0:10:40.760 for man, one based on liberation without restriction, and one 0:10:40.800 --> 0:10:43.640 that above all implored people to follow their own path. 0:10:44.880 --> 0:10:47.520 It is a philosophy perhaps best summed up by the 0:10:47.520 --> 0:10:51.120 book's most famous line, do what thou wilt should be 0:10:51.160 --> 0:10:54.680 the whole of the law, a basic idea that is 0:10:54.679 --> 0:10:59.360 often greatly misunderstood as the justification of selfish or immoral behavior, 0:11:00.080 --> 0:11:03.360 a situation or the more ironic, since what Crowley ultimately 0:11:03.400 --> 0:11:06.480 preached was the complete control of life for one's self, 0:11:06.880 --> 0:11:09.120 and not to have it defined by what other people 0:11:09.200 --> 0:11:23.880 might project onto it. It is also fair to say that much 0:11:41.480 --> 0:11:44.240 of his life was shrouded in controversy, and to many 0:11:44.480 --> 0:11:49.200 some of it will seem unpalatable sadistic. Even his voracious 0:11:49.240 --> 0:11:52.120 commitment to the practice of sex magic and the insanely 0:11:52.200 --> 0:11:55.080 chaotic attempt to form a Thelema community on the island 0:11:55.080 --> 0:11:57.720 of Sicily are just two aspects that come to mind. 0:11:59.080 --> 0:12:01.440 But for me, it all comes back to the Book 0:12:01.440 --> 0:12:04.720 of the Law. Whether you believe that Crowley was blessed 0:12:04.760 --> 0:12:07.400 with genuine magic powers or not, and there are many 0:12:07.440 --> 0:12:10.480 who do, there is something deeply profound at the heart 0:12:10.480 --> 0:12:14.199 of his belief that speaks to us all. For Crowley, 0:12:14.800 --> 0:12:17.200 magic was really just an expression of the power of 0:12:17.280 --> 0:12:21.480 human will. Is a reminder that for me, no religion, 0:14:03.000 --> 0:14:07.360 political party, media outlet, or social movement is the arbiter 0:14:07.480 --> 0:14:11.240 of what is and what isn't right. A reminder that 0:14:11.320 --> 0:14:13.520 we should never be afraid to be who we want 0:14:13.559 --> 0:14:15.880 to be in spite of how we feel the world 0:14:16.040 --> 0:14:20.160 might want us to be. Crowley's do what Thou Wilt 0:14:20.520 --> 0:14:23.640 is a cry to look beyond social convention and the 0:14:23.760 --> 0:14:26.880 narrow definitions with which others might attempt to define us, 0:14:27.680 --> 0:14:30.920 encouraging each of us to exercise our right to determine 0:14:30.920 --> 0:14:33.800 who we are or should be on our own terms. 0:14:47.400 --> 0:14:50.240 If this series has been about anything in particular, it 0:14:50.400 --> 0:14:54.200 is to question what the truth really is. If that later's report dismissing 0:15:29.680 --> 0:15:33.640 climate change is funded by a major petroleum conglomerate, you 0:15:33.720 --> 0:15:36.240 might want to think twice before quoting it to your friends. 0:15:37.480 --> 0:15:40.320 And when politicians start telling you to ignore the experts, 0:15:40.680 --> 0:15:44.240 it's worth considering just who might have the strongest ulterior motive. 0:15:47.920 --> 0:15:50.600 While writing this, I was reminded of a speech by 0:15:50.600 --> 0:15:53.800 the Sublime author David Foster Wallace that I believe has 0:15:53.840 --> 0:15:58.240 parallels with some of what Crowley represented. His message reminds us 0:16:09.920 --> 0:16:12.920 to value the totally obvious every day, even in the 0:16:12.960 --> 0:16:16.880 smallest of ways, to try to see all perspectives, and 0:16:16.960 --> 0:16:20.680 to exercise control over what we think.
