That was sort of 0:01:24.217 --> 0:01:26.617 on purpose. I wanted to design my life, so I 0:01:26.657 --> 0:01:29.057 never had to go into an office. So I was 0:01:29.097 --> 0:01:32.217 really fascinated about what was happening in corporate America because 0:01:32.217 --> 0:01:34.097 I think corporate America is sort of interesting and all 0:01:34.137 --> 0:01:38.377 of it and all of its uh mundane actions and 0:01:38.457 --> 0:01:41.337 I uh, but I did go to diversity training when 0:01:41.417 --> 0:01:44.577 I was writing for magazines, other liberal magazines. I went 0:01:44.617 --> 0:01:48.657 to an NYPD diversity training seminar, which I included in 0:01:48.657 --> 0:01:50.697 the book and wrote about that I've had to go 0:01:50.737 --> 0:01:52.577 to one of those because I worked in the Intel division. 0:01:52.617 --> 0:01:55.497 But keep going, oh yeah, yeah, so you know, and 0:01:55.497 --> 0:01:57.737 it was about yeah, that was that was a really 0:01:57.977 --> 0:02:01.577 fun and interesting experience. But also that was that diversity 0:02:01.577 --> 0:02:04.137 training I went to was in twenty fifteen, and that 0:02:04.337 --> 0:02:06.897 was before the Summer of Our Floyd, which, of course, 0:02:07.457 --> 0:02:11.577 across the spectrum, both in private and in the public sector, 0:02:11.817 --> 0:02:17.017 diversity training took a really nasty, hateful, and very racialized 0:02:17.617 --> 0:02:21.417 take after the riots of summer twenty twenty and after 0:02:21.417 --> 0:02:23.377 George Floyd's death. So a lot of that, A lot 0:02:23.377 --> 0:02:25.937 of the stuff in the book is um I was 0:02:25.977 --> 0:02:28.377 talking to people during this time or immediately right afterwards, 0:02:28.377 --> 0:02:30.537 so they were noticing how things had changed, and how 0:02:31.017 --> 0:02:34.417 HR had sort of ramped up the really sort of 0:02:34.657 --> 0:02:38.657 grotesque racial rhetoric that has no place in well anywhere 0:02:38.657 --> 0:02:41.017 into Sidney, but especially on the job and in the 0:02:41.057 --> 0:02:45.097 public sector. So would you find you wrote this book 0:02:45.137 --> 0:02:49.097 your research the book? Thought, right, that's that's I have 0:02:49.137 --> 0:02:52.817 a feeling we're going on that director. Well, it's interesting 0:02:52.857 --> 0:02:54.697 because you know, I like that fun. I talked to police officers, I talked to 0:03:07.737 --> 0:03:10.257 guys in the military, talk to people who work on 0:03:10.297 --> 0:03:14.257 you know, retail sales floors, it directors, so all walks 0:03:14.297 --> 0:03:16.297 of life across the economy, and just sort of wanted 0:03:16.337 --> 0:03:18.817 to know, like, what's your experience with diversity training? What 0:03:19.017 --> 0:03:21.217 do you think is going on here? And a lot 0:03:21.217 --> 0:03:23.857 of people were, you know, we're so um, it's such 0:03:23.897 --> 0:03:25.777 a part of our society now. They at first they 0:03:25.817 --> 0:03:27.817 would sort of say like, why don't we know why 0:03:27.817 --> 0:03:30.777 you care about this? Stuff. You know, here's what happened, 0:03:30.817 --> 0:03:33.457 Here's that I experienced. And the more they thought about it, 0:03:33.497 --> 0:03:35.457 the more they remember, the more they talked about it, 0:03:35.537 --> 0:03:38.457 the kind of more disturbed they got by what they'd 0:03:38.857 --> 0:03:43.337 sort of been forced to sit through. Of course, nobody I interviewed wanted to 0:03:48.817 --> 0:03:50.737 be identified by name because they're all scared of being 0:03:50.777 --> 0:03:53.337 fired from their jobs if they speak about these things. 0:03:53.617 --> 0:03:55.897 But he worked on an oil rig. He works on 0:03:55.937 --> 0:03:59.257 an oil rig off the of the coast of Newfoundland 0:03:59.297 --> 0:04:02.057 and Canada in the Atlantic Ocean. And the first thing 0:04:02.057 --> 0:04:04.057 he says to me is, I you know, I said, 0:04:04.057 --> 0:04:05.817 so tell me about what's happening on the job with 0:04:05.897 --> 0:04:08.577 the diversity training. He said, well, just yesterday, we had 0:04:08.617 --> 0:04:12.057 pink shirt day on the rig and I'm like, excuse me, Yeah, 0:04:12.097 --> 0:04:13.777 all these guys in the oil rig had to wear 0:04:13.857 --> 0:04:16.937 pink shirts for some diversity cause. And this was during COVID, 0:04:16.937 --> 0:04:19.737 so they hand out pink face masks and then they 0:04:19.777 --> 0:04:21.097 had to take pictures off. I'd win in the pink 0:04:21.097 --> 0:04:23.497 shirts to send it to corporate, because corporate, you know, 0:04:23.737 --> 0:04:26.817 it's the oil industry, so of course they're in the 0:04:26.817 --> 0:04:32.057 crosshairs of Canada's liberal government. The Resources Minister of Canada 0:04:32.257 --> 0:04:36.297 is from that areas. He's representative from Newfoundland, so they 0:04:36.377 --> 0:04:39.817 really got to like, you know, cozy up. The way 0:04:39.857 --> 0:04:42.097 that the oil industry in particular, and I documented this 0:04:42.137 --> 0:04:45.137 not just in Canada but around the world. One way 0:04:45.177 --> 0:04:48.097 the oil industry is casing up to liberal governments is 0:04:48.097 --> 0:04:50.857 through this diversity stuff. You know, there's a gay pride 0:04:50.937 --> 0:04:53.657 is very big in the oil industry. For these guys 0:04:53.697 --> 0:04:55.617 on oil rigs. They have to wear gay pride t 0:04:55.777 --> 0:04:59.377 shirts and June and take a photo the Canadian Resource Minister, 0:04:59.457 --> 0:05:01.497 who I just spoke about. This guy's in charge of 0:05:01.497 --> 0:05:04.857 of course handing out all the dueling contracts. He's openly 0:05:04.897 --> 0:05:06.577 gay and it's a big deal for him. So and 0:05:06.657 --> 0:05:08.977 you start looking at things like that. That's just one example. 0:05:09.177 --> 0:05:11.857 You start to see what corporate America gets out of 0:05:11.857 --> 0:05:13.977 all this stuff. Yeah, that's exactly right. But 0:07:13.377 --> 0:07:16.217 you're you're right when you mentioned that one person on 0:07:16.257 --> 0:07:18.097 the board, because that's just sort of a microcosm for 0:07:18.097 --> 0:07:21.817 our society that we're living in anyway, where there's the tiny, tiny, vocal, 0:07:21.857 --> 0:07:25.937 but absolutely terrifying minority that has nothing better to do 0:07:25.977 --> 0:07:28.937 and basically nothing better to live for than to take 0:07:28.977 --> 0:07:31.737 on these causes because it somehow feeds them or makes 0:07:31.737 --> 0:07:34.017 them feel worthwhile or gives their like meaning or whatever. 0:07:34.297 --> 0:07:37.977 And they turned it into absolutely a religion and an 0:07:37.977 --> 0:07:40.177 a belief that they enforced with religious fervor, which of 0:07:40.217 --> 0:07:43.177 course means that anything they do is justified means to 0:07:43.257 --> 0:07:46.817 the ends, and they have no problems whatsoever destroying people's 0:07:46.857 --> 0:07:52.497 lives and going scorched earth for their very strange, new 0:07:52.577 --> 0:07:56.497 fangled social religion. Yeah, I'm fond of reminding people that 0:07:56.777 --> 0:08:00.457 in the Russian Civil War, in the beginning of the 0:08:00.457 --> 0:08:03.097 Soviet Union, you know, there were the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. 0:08:03.257 --> 0:08:07.777 The Bolsheviks took on the name majority Arrians essentially, even 0:08:07.777 --> 0:08:10.337 though they never represented any majority of any part of 0:08:10.337 --> 0:08:12.817 the society. Yeah, it's it's the it's the insane 0:09:28.737 --> 0:09:31.977 braddy children who are running the asylum.
