About a quarter of the residence in Altadena 0:04:46.760 --> 0:04:49.680 are sixty five or older, and many of these families 0:04:50.040 --> 0:04:53.240 pass their houses down from parents to children, hoping they 0:04:53.240 --> 0:04:56.520 would be a foundation for generational wealth. Most of the 0:04:56.560 --> 0:05:01.080 residents live west of Lake Avenue in Altadena. This is 0:05:01.080 --> 0:05:05.680 where many early black homeowners were as a result of redlining, 0:05:05.680 --> 0:05:09.400 and even when redlining was outlawed, the practice continued informally 0:05:09.600 --> 0:05:12.720 by real estate agents. So black families who were pushed 0:05:12.760 --> 0:05:16.000 out of urban housing in neighboring Pasadena made their way 0:05:16.560 --> 0:05:20.440 to Altadena, and by the seventies, the black proportion of 0:05:20.520 --> 0:05:23.680 the population peaked at nearly forty three percent, that's according 0:05:23.680 --> 0:05:27.960 to census data. And now the worry is that residents 0:05:28.000 --> 0:05:32.200 will scatter, that neighborhoods will hasten gentrification, that the proportion 0:05:32.320 --> 0:05:36.200 of black residents has already fallen to eighteen percent. Now 0:05:36.240 --> 0:05:39.760 that Altadena is considered affluent, with the average household income 0:05:39.800 --> 0:05:42.240 of one hundred and ninety thousand dollars. So I've seen 0:05:42.320 --> 0:05:44.880 a lot of posts from people saying, hey, don't sell. 0:05:44.960 --> 0:05:47.599 People are already making offers that it's going to be 0:05:47.640 --> 0:05:51.120 a land grab by wealthy developers. So I truly hope 0:05:51.120 --> 0:05:53.440 that we as a community can make sure that this 0:05:54.279 --> 0:05:57.400 community stays in our hands and in our prayers. 0:05:57.440 --> 0:06:02.479 Andrew just finally on that.
