After 0:01:02.840 --> 0:01:06.000 Troy graduated Byron and Kareem with a muscle behind a 0:01:06.080 --> 0:01:10.400 cocaine operation that they all ran out of Troy's apartment. However, 0:01:10.800 --> 0:01:13.240 a drug drought in the summer of nineteen eighty nine 0:01:13.319 --> 0:01:17.360 gave way to desperate behavior all over Philly. While Troy 0:01:17.480 --> 0:01:20.280 was away in Atlantic City, on a September twenty sixth, 0:01:20.319 --> 0:01:23.480 nineteen eighty nine, Kareem set up a deal with two men, 0:01:23.920 --> 0:01:28.000 Kevin Jones and Arthur Sanders. Sanders claimed to have waited 0:01:28.040 --> 0:01:30.760 down the block while Kevin Jones drove to Troy's apartment 0:01:30.760 --> 0:01:34.720 and his Gray Dodge with forty thousand dollars to buy cocaine. Then, 0:01:34.880 --> 0:01:38.360 after about ninety minutes, two other men allegedly drove past 0:01:38.400 --> 0:01:41.800 Sanders in Jones's gray Dodge, a light skin driver and 0:01:41.840 --> 0:01:44.400 a dark skinned passenger wearing a hat with the brim 0:01:44.480 --> 0:01:47.720 pole down low. There's new evidence that indicates that the 0:01:47.800 --> 0:01:51.120 victim was alive at this time. Nearly two months later, 0:01:51.400 --> 0:01:54.920 Jones's body was discovered in the gray Dodge, beaten bound 0:01:55.000 --> 0:01:58.880 and shot. Arthur Sanders agreed that Troy Coleman's photo looked 0:01:59.040 --> 0:02:02.160 like the passenger who allegedly drove by him. And my father moved to California. Again, my family was well to do, however, 0:04:45.080 --> 0:04:46.560 you know, just to sit in and be a part 0:04:46.600 --> 0:04:49.680 of this particular neighborhood that was in Germantown, which is 0:04:49.720 --> 0:04:53.040 a little bit once of a good lifestyle. I didn't 0:04:53.080 --> 0:04:54.840 live down here. It was a little more lower class 0:04:55.360 --> 0:04:58.200 again from Mount Area. So when I started boxing the day, 0:04:58.279 --> 0:05:01.440 just being down there in the how a couple of 0:05:01.440 --> 0:05:05.480 them guys from brand the neighborhood. After that, subsequently I 0:05:05.720 --> 0:05:08.320 got invoved with him with the about the age of 0:05:08.800 --> 0:05:12.640 seventeen sixteen. We started out young, one the corners till 0:05:13.120 --> 0:05:13.880 that's when it began. 0:05:14.240 --> 0:05:17.680 So this must have put you on the radar of 0:05:17.760 --> 0:05:20.400 the local police. And we know that in that time 0:05:20.520 --> 0:05:23.960 and place, this was a culture that it started with 0:05:24.040 --> 0:05:27.520 Frank Rizzo, who as the police chief in Philadelphia from 0:05:27.520 --> 0:05:30.479 sixty eight to seventy one. The legacy of brutality and 0:05:30.520 --> 0:05:33.480 corruption is widely known, and it thrived in the police 0:05:33.520 --> 0:05:36.919 department after he became mayor. It's really crazy that that 0:05:36.960 --> 0:05:39.240 guy became mayor. But seventy two to eighty, and they 0:05:39.240 --> 0:05:41.480 were just beating the shit out of everybody back then, 0:05:41.560 --> 0:05:44.360 and it's really it's crazy that this was a major 0:05:44.400 --> 0:05:47.960 American city. So, Jerry, you were a college student at 0:05:47.960 --> 0:05:51.840 the University of Pennsylvania at that time and you experienced 0:05:52.040 --> 0:05:54.080 or were at least aware of this. Right, This is 0:05:54.120 --> 0:05:55.400 not hyperbole, right. 0:05:55.279 --> 0:05:58.520 Oh no, if you had a little bit of long 0:05:58.600 --> 0:06:01.200 hair like I did, every time you walk down the 0:06:01.279 --> 0:06:03.600 street at night, you were afraid that you were going 0:06:03.680 --> 0:06:05.679 to stop and hassled by the police. 0:06:05.680 --> 0:06:08.360 And I'm sure for people of color it was much worse. 0:06:08.720 --> 0:06:11.479 In my research, I mean, these were in the thirty 0:06:11.560 --> 0:06:14.840 ninth District, right, a section of North Philadelphia, which was 0:06:14.880 --> 0:06:19.120 a working class, poor black neighborhood. Police routinely made false arrests, 0:06:19.120 --> 0:06:22.560 planted drugs, robbed victims, and filed bogus reports to cover 0:06:22.680 --> 0:06:25.839 up their actions. So all of this is known now, 0:06:25.880 --> 0:06:29.560 it's been documented. This is not us just having ah 0:06:30.040 --> 0:06:32.680 there's a trip down a very ugly memory lane right here. 0:06:33.080 --> 0:06:36.520 In fact, there were fourteen hundred convictions that were overturned 0:06:36.600 --> 0:06:38.960 due to the thirty ninth district. But they're not the 0:06:39.000 --> 0:06:42.479 only ones. There was the one squad cases, the five 0:06:42.560 --> 0:06:46.720 squad cases. I mean, there's been a history in Philadelphia, 0:06:47.000 --> 0:06:49.520 you know, and then in the nineties you have one 0:06:49.560 --> 0:06:52.479 of the cops that was involved in this case, Martin Devlin. 0:06:52.560 --> 0:06:55.159 The number of cases have been overturned because of him. 0:06:55.360 --> 0:06:58.360 It's a very sordid history, right. 0:06:58.440 --> 0:07:01.479 So this of course brings me back to another person 0:07:01.520 --> 0:07:03.240 who was wrong for the convictor who's been on our show, 0:07:03.279 --> 0:07:07.000 Tony Wright, which was ironically the same cop that was 0:07:07.040 --> 0:07:10.560 involved in Troy's case, Martin Devlin. And in the article 0:07:10.560 --> 0:07:13.160 of Rolling Stone magazine about Tony's case, there was a 0:07:13.200 --> 0:07:16.800 pull quote that said that in the nineteen eighties or nineties, 0:07:16.920 --> 0:07:18.840 a black man had a better chance of getting justice 0:07:18.960 --> 0:07:22.680 in Philadelphia, Mississippi than in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So let's go 0:07:22.800 --> 0:07:25.920 to that and of course, Troy, this of course, what 0:07:26.080 --> 0:07:29.240 led up to this, I think indirectly is the fact 0:07:29.280 --> 0:07:31.920 that you were involved, as you've been very honest about, 0:07:32.360 --> 0:07:34.800 in the cocaine business. Can you tell us about that 0:07:35.080 --> 0:07:38.400 and the people that were working under you at the time, 0:07:38.520 --> 0:07:41.720 because they come to play a role in your wrongful conviction. 0:07:42.000 --> 0:07:44.240 Well, when we got involved, it was a couple of 0:07:44.240 --> 0:07:47.800 guys from that neighborhood, particularly down cross the street. And 0:07:47.840 --> 0:07:50.840 this is actual. He's called the Jungle. Some of the 0:07:50.880 --> 0:07:55.000 guys that's involved, Barmi Johnson, Gary Keith Johnson, Raymond Noble's 0:07:55.040 --> 0:07:58.640 in his street meet was dream. My street meeting at 0:07:58.680 --> 0:08:03.080 the time was caussing his with his Kareem So he 0:08:03.160 --> 0:08:04.960 was an older guy, he just got out of jail 0:08:05.360 --> 0:08:07.440 and all this time everybody looked up to him as 0:08:07.480 --> 0:08:08.960 the tough, gut height and so on and so forth. 0:08:09.400 --> 0:08:11.840 To me, it was like comparative that I get them involved. 0:08:11.840 --> 0:08:14.360 It's somewhat for the muscle as well as Byron. 0:08:14.560 --> 0:08:20.640 So you had Byron Johnson, Darren Johnson and Kareem Nobles 0:08:20.960 --> 0:08:23.000 were your underlings. But we had an apartment in Pulaski 0:08:36.320 --> 0:08:38.880 Town and it was just for you know, fun, dealing 0:08:38.880 --> 0:08:41.120 with the drug stuff, girls and all that. The Rayman 0:08:41.160 --> 0:08:44.560 Nobles Koree was actually staying in my apartment live in 0:08:44.600 --> 0:08:47.120 Mount Area. I still had that place in Byron. The 0:08:47.320 --> 0:08:49.840 keys to the apartment kareem at keys to the apartment, 0:08:50.360 --> 0:08:53.240 so people had access to it. At that time when 0:08:53.240 --> 0:08:55.920 I was driving BMW's had a nice amount of money 0:08:55.960 --> 0:08:59.040 and I was okay. However, these guys that were working 0:08:59.080 --> 0:09:03.560 for me, okay until a drought came in nineteen eighty nine. 0:09:04.040 --> 0:09:07.440 Rout is when there's thot drugs, particularly cocaine of elbow 0:09:07.440 --> 0:09:09.520 at that time. And this was a well known time 0:09:09.600 --> 0:09:13.680 because homicideal rose significantly at that time. So when this 0:09:13.760 --> 0:09:16.920 drought came about, I was okay these guys, I didn't 0:09:16.960 --> 0:09:20.000 have anything for him. So they actually ran them up 0:09:20.080 --> 0:09:21.800 for lack of running fleet. They just ran them up. 0:09:21.800 --> 0:09:24.080 They was just doing all kinds of puny stuff. And 0:09:24.200 --> 0:09:27.520 this day in particularly in which this crime happened, myself 0:09:27.760 --> 0:09:30.439 and another gentleman by the name of Richard Crawford. That 0:09:30.600 --> 0:09:33.760 morning of September twenty sixth we went to Atlantic City. 0:09:33.840 --> 0:09:35.800 And when I was in Atlantic City, I think I 0:09:35.840 --> 0:09:39.240 had no more than nine ounces of cocaine left, and 0:09:40.120 --> 0:09:42.640 I actually, you know, trusted claim to deal with that 0:09:42.720 --> 0:09:45.960 while I was gone. And when I left on the 0:09:46.000 --> 0:09:50.240 twenty six We get to Atlantic City. That morning, was gambling, 0:09:50.559 --> 0:09:54.200 taking insights, you know, shopping, talking to all that other stuff, 0:09:54.240 --> 0:09:58.040 to girls whatever. So I was very intoxicated. I wasn't 0:09:58.040 --> 0:10:00.319 willing to drive back to the city, so that night 0:10:00.559 --> 0:10:02.240 we checked the two hotel. 0:10:02.520 --> 0:10:05.920 Okay, So you were in Atlantic City having fun, intoxicated, 0:10:06.080 --> 0:10:07.880 so drunk in fact, that you had a hard time 0:10:07.920 --> 0:10:11.040 even remembering where you had checked in and under what name. 0:10:11.120 --> 0:10:14.719 And then eventually the prosecution presented evidence that you had 0:10:14.720 --> 0:10:17.840 stayed at Bally's under your own name, using your shaky 0:10:17.960 --> 0:10:21.240 memory to impeach your alibi, which makes no sense. They 0:10:21.280 --> 0:10:24.240 impeach your memory of your alibi with evidence of your alibi, 0:10:24.760 --> 0:10:27.480 But why let evidence of your innocence stop them from 0:10:27.480 --> 0:10:28.200 prosecuting you? 0:10:28.320 --> 0:10:28.480 Right? 0:10:28.600 --> 0:10:31.560 In fact, what we now know is that the state 0:10:31.760 --> 0:10:36.000 was in possession of even more exculpatory evidence, but we'll 0:10:36.040 --> 0:10:38.800 get to that in just a bit. So anyway, the 0:10:38.840 --> 0:10:40.880 crime itself while you were in Atlantic City. Back at 0:10:40.920 --> 0:10:43.800 the apartment in Philadelphia on September twenty sixth, nineteen eighty nine, 0:10:44.120 --> 0:10:45.920 Kareem had set up a deal with Kevin Jones and 0:10:46.000 --> 0:10:48.800 Arthur Sanders. Now, according to Sanders, he and Jones. Kevin 0:10:48.880 --> 0:10:50.920 Jones arrived in the area of the apartment of separate 0:10:50.920 --> 0:10:53.800 cars around one thirty pm with forty thousand dollars to 0:10:53.800 --> 0:10:57.440 buy cocaine. According to Sanders, while he waged down the block, 0:10:57.920 --> 0:11:01.000 Jones continued alone to the apartment in Gray Dodge. Then, 0:11:01.400 --> 0:11:04.000 about an hour and a half later, Sanders allegedly saw 0:11:04.040 --> 0:11:06.560 two men driving the Gray Dodge past him, a light 0:11:06.600 --> 0:11:08.760 skinned man driving and a darker skinned man with the 0:11:08.760 --> 0:11:11.079 brim of his hat pulled down low at the passenger seat. 0:11:11.160 --> 0:11:16.880 This is who Sanders misidentified as being Troy. However, in 0:11:17.040 --> 0:11:21.240 twenty nineteen, Byron Johnson admitted to being that passenger, right 0:11:21.679 --> 0:11:24.400 that Kareem had hired him to move a body back. 0:11:24.440 --> 0:11:27.760 At this point in nineteen eighty nine, it is unclear 0:11:27.800 --> 0:11:30.800 whether Kareem or Byron even knew that Kevin Jones was 0:11:30.840 --> 0:11:33.319 still alive in the trunk. And we'll get to how 0:11:33.320 --> 0:11:35.280 we know that in just a bit. It's dramatic, so 0:11:35.360 --> 0:11:39.400 stay tuned. That night, though, the Jones family came to 0:11:39.440 --> 0:11:42.880 Troy's apartment armed looking for Kevin Jones. They threatened Troy's 0:11:42.880 --> 0:11:46.520 girlfriend searched the apartment, but no sign of Kevin at 0:11:46.520 --> 0:11:48.960 this point, Troy, Well, you had no way of knowing 0:11:48.960 --> 0:11:50.640 it yet, but you were in a lot of trouble. 0:11:50.720 --> 0:11:53.240 And I'm not talking about with the cops. The cops 0:11:53.440 --> 0:11:56.520 actually kind of ironically inadvertently saved you. 0:11:57.040 --> 0:11:59.480 I got that to put off. The next day, I 0:11:59.559 --> 0:12:01.600 was stop by the police. You know, had my license 0:12:01.720 --> 0:12:04.719 and registration, everything was legit, but they found a bag 0:12:04.800 --> 0:12:06.760 of marijuana in the car, and that might have been 0:12:06.960 --> 0:12:09.480 a good thing, because I got arrested that evening. I 0:12:09.480 --> 0:12:11.880 want I call it home, and that's when I heard everything, 0:12:11.920 --> 0:12:14.880 everybody saying, these guys are looking for you if you 0:12:14.960 --> 0:12:17.440 stated and want to kiked. So when I was built out, 0:12:17.520 --> 0:12:20.160 my girlfriend at the time as well as my mother 0:12:20.720 --> 0:12:23.280 had bags in the car and the ticket to me. 0:12:24.200 --> 0:12:27.960 And that's that very next day, I was in California. 0:12:28.040 --> 0:12:30.440 Even though you had nothing to do with this, You've 0:12:30.440 --> 0:12:32.520 got to leave town for California just to be safe 0:12:32.559 --> 0:12:34.560 from the Joneses. So you bailed out and hopped on 0:12:34.559 --> 0:12:37.000 a flight on September twenty ninth. Now, between the time 0:12:37.000 --> 0:12:39.280 of the abduction and when the body was discovered, Kareem 0:12:39.440 --> 0:12:43.559 aka Raymond Nobles died. Call me crazy but it might 0:12:43.559 --> 0:12:47.040 have had something to do with the Joneses anyway. So now, 0:12:47.200 --> 0:12:50.280 November twenty first, nineteen nine, the police discovered Kevin Jones's 0:12:50.280 --> 0:12:51.800 body in the trunk of the Gray Dodge and the 0:12:51.880 --> 0:12:55.320 john want to make her parking lot at Abington Township. Now, 0:12:55.320 --> 0:12:59.080 by that time the body was badly decomposing, but it 0:12:59.120 --> 0:13:01.560 was clear that his was struck with a blunt object 0:13:01.640 --> 0:13:05.640 several times and then one, and this is important, one 0:13:06.400 --> 0:13:10.200 hard contact, high velocity gun shot wound was the cause 0:13:10.240 --> 0:13:13.320 of death. And we'll get to why that's important in 0:13:13.360 --> 0:13:17.880 a little bit. The body was bound with electrical cord, blankets, sheets, 0:13:17.880 --> 0:13:22.119 and some insulation. The police chemist Lewis Joka, later testified 0:13:22.280 --> 0:13:26.400 matched items from Troy's apartment. So the investigation began, and 0:13:26.480 --> 0:13:29.840 initially while under pressure from both the Jones family and 0:13:30.000 --> 0:13:36.480 the notoriously like unbelievably like hopelessly terrifyingly corrupt Detective Martin Devlin, 0:13:37.320 --> 0:13:39.679 Arthur Sanders was the first to implicate Troy. 0:13:39.920 --> 0:13:43.680 According to him, never seen Troy before, and he's sitting 0:13:43.679 --> 0:13:46.439 there waiting for now, and he suddenly a car comes by. Now, 0:13:46.440 --> 0:13:49.320 when you I mean, just logically, when you think about it, 0:13:49.360 --> 0:13:51.360 if suddenly you see a car. First of all, you go, 0:13:51.600 --> 0:13:54.520 you know, that car looks familiar, and then in your 0:13:54.559 --> 0:13:58.080 mind you go, oh, yeah, that looks like it's Kevin's car. 0:13:58.480 --> 0:14:01.640 And then he looks at the driver and says, that's 0:14:01.720 --> 0:14:04.200 not Kevin. It's a light skin guy. Then he looks 0:14:04.200 --> 0:14:06.920 at the passenger who has his hat over his head, 0:14:07.800 --> 0:14:10.520 and he's able to identify him. Now, all this is 0:14:10.559 --> 0:14:15.320 happening in two or three seconds. According to Sanders's testimony. 0:14:14.840 --> 0:14:18.040 Office said just said that the passenger, he said he 0:14:18.080 --> 0:14:21.440 had a baseball cap on, pulled down over his foreheads, 0:14:21.560 --> 0:14:24.760 slouched in the seat, and in a photo where he said, 0:14:25.000 --> 0:14:27.880 I look like the passenger putting me in the city 0:14:27.880 --> 0:14:30.160 at the time. However, I'm in the Atlantic City.
