They're known as scribes. Scribes 0:06:53.560 --> 0:06:58.200 in the Bible came from the tribe of Zebelin. Ezra 0:06:58.440 --> 0:07:01.000 was a priest, but he was all so in the 0:07:01.040 --> 0:07:05.720 Old Testament, a scribe. The job definition of a scribe 0:07:05.760 --> 0:07:12.040 would be to have access into throne rooms and into courtrooms, 0:07:13.120 --> 0:07:17.480 have access into places that most people will never get 0:07:17.520 --> 0:07:22.280 access in the throne room like a scribe would get 0:07:22.320 --> 0:07:25.520 every day, and his one purpose was to take a 0:07:25.560 --> 0:07:29.440 pen and a piece of paper and hear the conversation 0:07:29.960 --> 0:07:33.120 in the throne room where the king was and write 0:07:33.160 --> 0:07:38.160 it down and then present it to people. That's what 0:07:38.320 --> 0:07:43.560 a scribe did. He had a pen and paper scroll, 0:07:43.960 --> 0:07:48.480 and he would write. He had a very special role 0:07:48.560 --> 0:07:52.640 to record history, to write it, and in doing so 0:07:52.720 --> 0:07:56.120 he was making history. It would be history that was 0:07:56.560 --> 0:07:59.600 being made at that very moment that it was being written. 0:08:01.080 --> 0:08:03.400 I think about the story of Esther in the sixth 0:08:03.480 --> 0:08:06.040 chapter of the Book of Esther, and how that the 0:08:06.080 --> 0:08:10.000 Bible said, on a certain night, this involved a scribe. 0:08:10.560 --> 0:08:14.600 This whole miracle of Esther, in a whole group, of 0:08:14.960 --> 0:08:18.640 a whole Jewish nation was on death row, and the 0:08:18.680 --> 0:08:23.320 only thing that saved him was a scribe, the Bible said. 0:08:23.360 --> 0:08:28.000 The king couldn't sleep, and in order to get drowsy, 0:08:28.080 --> 0:08:31.400 he called for the scribe to bring the books that 0:08:31.520 --> 0:08:34.360 had been chronicled and read them. And he just so 0:08:34.600 --> 0:08:38.160 happened this scribe to open up and start reading. And 0:08:38.160 --> 0:08:40.640 he said, on such and such a day, there was 0:08:40.720 --> 0:08:44.600 an assassination attempt that was going to happen. But a man, 0:08:44.679 --> 0:08:47.600 a Jew by the name of Mordecai, sat outside the 0:08:47.640 --> 0:08:50.319 gate and he overheard the assassin saying what they were 0:08:50.320 --> 0:08:52.320 going to do, and he reported it to someone in 0:08:52.360 --> 0:08:56.520 the palace. And because of that, we stopped the assassination attempt, 0:08:56.679 --> 0:08:59.640 and the king was not killed, and the kingdom stayed strong. 0:09:00.200 --> 0:09:02.840 And the king woke up and he said, say that again, 0:09:02.960 --> 0:09:06.680 Read that again. Remind the king of his obligations. So powerful 0:10:03.160 --> 0:10:07.560 where scribes think of this that when Nebuconza invaded with 0:10:07.679 --> 0:10:11.080 his Babylonian army, the nation of Israel and took the 0:10:11.120 --> 0:10:14.640 city of Jerusalem and leveled it. The scripture said he 0:10:14.679 --> 0:10:19.600 gave in Second Kings, chapter twenty five special instructions. He said, 0:10:19.640 --> 0:10:22.239 you are to arrest. He said this to his military. 0:10:23.280 --> 0:10:27.800 Arrest their generals, arrest their military leaders. Arrest the royal 0:10:27.920 --> 0:10:32.000 seed or the royal family. The family's a threat. Everybody 0:10:32.080 --> 0:10:34.080 he's talking about is a threat. And then he makes 0:10:34.120 --> 0:10:37.600 this profound statement, and make sure that you arrest the 0:10:37.679 --> 0:10:43.960 principal Scribe. I'm scared Nebukanezzar in his mighty Babylonian army. 0:10:44.120 --> 0:10:47.840 I'm scared to death of the Principal Scribe. The guy 0:10:47.840 --> 0:10:51.640 who gets in the throne room and hears conversations and 0:10:51.679 --> 0:10:55.240 writes them down and communicates it to the people is 0:10:55.320 --> 0:11:00.240 one of the most dangerous individuals to my Babylonian culture. Sure, 0:11:00.520 --> 0:11:04.040 because if he hears, he has the capacity to go 0:11:04.200 --> 0:11:07.800 back and remind the people of where they have been 0:11:08.040 --> 0:11:11.720 before and whow that they didn't see a way back then. 0:11:12.080 --> 0:11:14.959 And if God could do it, then he can do 0:11:15.040 --> 0:11:21.200 it again. And that's why he's dangerous. When they were 0:11:21.240 --> 0:11:26.160 taken into captivity and Jeremiah twenty three, Jeremiah asked the question, 0:11:26.320 --> 0:11:30.040 will we ever be assembled again. We're so scattered, we're 0:11:30.080 --> 0:11:33.600 so defeated, we're so humiliated. Will we ever be a 0:11:33.679 --> 0:11:37.319 people again? And God gave him a message, and he said, 0:11:37.360 --> 0:11:42.040 remember what I did for Egypt and how I brought 0:11:42.120 --> 0:11:45.520 Moses out. But then God said, but I've got news 0:11:45.640 --> 0:11:51.080 for you. That for them was that for them? For you, 0:11:51.679 --> 0:11:58.040 the story of Moses and the Israelites coming out of Egypt, 0:11:58.480 --> 0:12:06.360 that for you is a story, But for them it 0:12:06.440 --> 0:12:12.200 was a miracle. And somehow we have to go from 0:12:12.240 --> 0:12:16.200 doing more than reading this book and it being stories 0:12:16.280 --> 0:12:20.480 about David against Goliath and stories of Hezekiah having a 0:12:20.520 --> 0:12:23.880 death sentence and being given fifteen more years. We have 0:12:24.000 --> 0:12:27.400 to go beyond reciting, and then we need to pull 0:12:27.440 --> 0:12:30.880 out our pen and start writing and say, if he 0:12:31.000 --> 0:12:35.000 ever did it before, All the stories that are written 0:12:35.120 --> 0:12:39.599 are just to let us know he's the same God today. 0:12:40.080 --> 0:12:44.200 What he did for seventeen years, He'll do it again 0:12:44.640 --> 0:12:48.959 and again and again, from faith under faith, from glory 0:12:49.040 --> 0:12:52.439 under glory.
