The most famous Manson 0:10:24.000 --> 0:10:26.520 killing was the murder of Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger, and 0:10:26.600 --> 0:10:28.640 several other less famous people. I think they killed five 0:10:28.640 --> 0:10:30.559 people at once in this like big compound that was 0:10:30.600 --> 0:10:32.800 like Roman Polanski's house, but he was out at the time. 0:10:33.080 --> 0:10:36.120 And these murders were incredibly grizzly, and they had elements 0:10:36.120 --> 0:10:39.240 that police at the time described as ritualistic. Um. They were like, some elements were taken 0:12:39.600 --> 0:12:41.440 all out of a story of an actual priest who 0:12:41.480 --> 0:12:44.480 had an x an exorcism, but like it had bore 0:12:44.520 --> 0:12:49.240 no resemblance to anything that happened in the book. Priest. Yeah, yeah, 0:12:49.400 --> 0:12:53.360 priests once existed and he was a little off. Yeah. 0:12:54.000 --> 0:12:57.240 Demonic possession hadn't been a massive topic in American culture 0:12:57.440 --> 0:13:00.960 in this period, um, but after the Exorcist, it becomes 0:13:00.960 --> 0:13:02.920 like a huge topic of discussion. For one thing, there's 0:13:02.960 --> 0:13:05.439 hundreds of like movies that come out that are based 0:13:05.440 --> 0:13:08.200 on like similar premises, right. The thing that all that 0:13:08.200 --> 0:13:11.280 that like little bitty shitty b movie producers always do 0:13:11.360 --> 0:13:13.920 like they rip off the big popular movie. Um. And 0:13:14.000 --> 0:13:16.600 for most Americans, obviously, this just meant that we got 0:13:16.640 --> 0:13:19.680 a bunch of fun horror movies that involved demonic possession. 0:13:19.920 --> 0:13:22.439 But among the nascent Christian right, which in this period 0:13:22.520 --> 0:13:24.840 was starting to form into a political block for the 0:13:24.840 --> 0:13:27.440 first time in the United States, the Exorcist was seen 0:13:27.480 --> 0:13:29.840 as a deadly warning. This was helped along by a 0:13:29.920 --> 0:13:34.320 new species of evangelical Christian grifter themselves inspired by the 0:13:34.360 --> 0:13:37.520 Church of Satan, the fake former Satanist. So you start 0:13:37.559 --> 0:13:42.000 having former former Satanists kind of like these former Catholic 0:13:42.120 --> 0:13:44.480 nuns popping up in this period and lecturing about things 0:13:44.720 --> 0:13:48.080 they had supposedly done. Now, the most prominent of these 0:13:48.080 --> 0:13:51.680 guys was Mike Warnkey, who published his book Satan Seller 0:13:51.920 --> 0:13:57.000 in nineteen seventy two. Uh Satan Seller recounted a childhood 0:13:57.040 --> 0:13:59.560 and young adulthood that Warnkey claimed had been spent like 0:13:59.640 --> 0:14:02.679 as a a hardcore devil worshiper. He claimed that he'd 0:14:02.720 --> 0:14:04.840 been a Satanic high priest and that he'd been involved 0:14:04.840 --> 0:14:08.480 in ritualistic sex orgies. He went into detail about ritual murders, 0:14:08.559 --> 0:14:11.800 child murder, and mass rape, claiming that he'd participated in 0:14:11.840 --> 0:14:14.640 a variety of capital offenses until Jesus saved him by 0:14:14.679 --> 0:14:21.560 sending him to Vietnam. Um that's what he Yeah, well, 0:14:21.680 --> 0:14:27.840 horrible guy. Yeah, there were a lot of Satanists back 0:14:27.840 --> 0:14:29.680 in the sixties and seventies.
