That's not what the game's about, right, Like, wow, Now, 0:39:15.800 --> 0:39:19.200 what was your interest in looking into HBCUs because a 0:39:19.280 --> 0:39:22.640 couple of reasons. What is I'm you know, I have 0:39:22.760 --> 0:39:26.520 this ongoing fascination with how screwed up American higher education is. 0:39:26.920 --> 0:39:30.120 So I started out by saying, you know, when I 0:39:30.280 --> 0:39:35.240 talked to people who went to HBCUs, they say exactly 0:39:35.640 --> 0:39:39.759 what you said. They had this overwhelmingly positive experience. And 0:39:39.840 --> 0:39:41.560 then I looked on the US News rankings and I 0:39:41.640 --> 0:39:44.680 saw that these schools are at the bottom. Right, So 0:39:44.880 --> 0:39:47.359 my first question was, how is it a school can 0:39:48.120 --> 0:39:50.880 do such a good job educating its students. Did they 0:39:50.960 --> 0:39:53.320 come away saying that was one of the most important 0:39:53.320 --> 0:39:57.000 experiences of my life and simultaneously be ranked at the bottom. Right, 0:39:57.080 --> 0:39:59.000 those two things don't There's something wrong with them? So 0:39:59.120 --> 0:40:01.719 that was one reason I wanted to, uh to look 0:40:01.760 --> 0:40:06.120 at it to kind of resolve that that contradiction. But I mean that's been true for one 0:40:44.719 --> 0:40:47.480 hundred years, right, But like it takes a long time 0:40:47.480 --> 0:40:49.440 for people to focus on it and to start to 0:40:49.520 --> 0:40:51.960 peel away the layers and say, you know, it doesn't 0:40:52.040 --> 0:40:55.040 solve the problem if you just hire a couple of 0:40:55.280 --> 0:40:58.280 black police officers, you know, or you have to look closely. 0:40:58.320 --> 0:40:59.879 And that's why I want to look at the US 0:41:00.320 --> 0:41:04.200 because that was an example of a highly discriminatory practice 0:41:04.560 --> 0:41:08.360 that persists because people don't understand the assumptions that drive it. 0:41:08.600 --> 0:41:10.520 So that's a kind of I think you have to 0:41:10.600 --> 0:41:15.880 be actively engaged in peeling back more and more layers 0:41:15.960 --> 0:41:18.600 of this onion. Cause historically 0:41:32.040 --> 0:41:34.759 Black College is the rank solo. A couple, well, the 0:41:34.840 --> 0:41:36.680 two that we've talked about are the critical ones. The 0:41:36.800 --> 0:41:39.080 three one is that there are a number of different 0:41:39.080 --> 0:41:42.080 ways in which your ranking as a school depends upon 0:41:42.239 --> 0:41:45.800 how much money you have. And you know, schools that 0:41:46.000 --> 0:41:49.480 serve a predominantly African American population are going to have 0:41:49.640 --> 0:41:52.719 less money than you know, ivy League schools. Right. Just 0:41:52.800 --> 0:41:54.600 look at a school like Deal, It's got a down 0:41:54.640 --> 0:41:58.440 to one hundred million dollars. Harvard's got forty some odd billion. Right, 0:41:58.800 --> 0:42:02.120 So you get penalized for that. Two, you get penalized 0:42:02.200 --> 0:42:07.239 for lower graduation rates. And graduation rates are not a 0:42:07.320 --> 0:42:09.560 function of how good a job the school is. Doing 0:42:09.600 --> 0:42:13.680 at educating students. They are a function of the economic 0:42:13.880 --> 0:42:19.720 circumstances of the students.
