Are you concerned? It's a smaller part of 0:03:08.120 --> 0:03:10.600 New York State. It's a large city. But at the 0:03:10.639 --> 0:03:14.959 same time, outside the city area, you have some lacks 0:03:15.040 --> 0:03:18.760 gun rules where you can purchase assault rifles and other 0:03:19.200 --> 0:03:22.360 rifles and even carry. But in New York City we 0:03:22.440 --> 0:03:26.519 have some of the strictest gun rules in the entire country. 0:03:26.880 --> 0:03:29.720 It's very difficult to get a carry from it. It's 0:03:29.800 --> 0:03:32.880 very difficult to get a gun license. And so when 0:03:32.919 --> 0:03:37.320 you lack these rules, you're really jeopardizing the safety of 0:03:37.440 --> 0:03:42.000 New Yorkers. And many of these locales like Chicago, Detroit 0:03:42.120 --> 0:03:45.160 and others, we don't produce these guns. They're finding their 0:03:45.200 --> 0:03:47.720 way from the southern part of the country, and they're 0:03:47.760 --> 0:03:50.320 coming to our streets and they're taking the lives of 0:03:50.360 --> 0:03:53.240 innocent people. And so I think the Supreme Court must 0:03:53.240 --> 0:03:57.280 make the right decision and allow us to really handle 0:03:57.680 --> 0:04:01.360 who can actually obtain a gun. What do you say 0:04:01.640 --> 0:04:05.720 to folks, and I will say myself included, who say 0:04:05.760 --> 0:04:11.040 that adding more police to a beat, to particular neighborhoods 0:04:11.080 --> 0:04:14.280 that are seeing an influxing crime is not the best 0:04:14.400 --> 0:04:18.200 use of our resources, that we should be instead reallocating 0:04:18.560 --> 0:04:24.320 those funds to prevention methods, to economic development, to mental 0:04:24.320 --> 0:04:27.839 health crisis intervention. What do you say to those folks 0:04:27.839 --> 0:04:31.359 that are concerned that this American rescue plan is justin 0:04:31.480 --> 0:04:34.640 more incentive to have more cops in a time when 0:04:34.640 --> 0:04:38.880 we're seeing an escalation in police brutality. But while we get there, we must stabilize 0:04:52.160 --> 0:04:55.479 this increase in violence. And while we get there, we 0:04:55.600 --> 0:04:58.960 must look at those real programs like Crisis Management Team 0:04:59.040 --> 0:05:03.000 that I sponsor is support. We must look at how 0:05:03.000 --> 0:05:07.159 do we move away from eating crime? Some too simple 0:05:07.279 --> 0:05:11.320 or simple like dyslexia screening in every school. Yes, 0:08:14.200 --> 0:08:17.120 I think some very significant parts wrap around services, some 0:08:17.200 --> 0:08:20.080 of youth employment. I would expand even further and talk 0:08:20.120 --> 0:08:25.120 about full internship all year round. Exposure is important looking 0:08:25.160 --> 0:08:29.960 at the crisis management models and those anti violence teams 0:08:29.960 --> 0:08:33.800 and groups on the ground, identifying hotspots or we know 0:08:34.080 --> 0:08:39.320 violence actually takes place, information sharing between atf our federal, 0:08:39.320 --> 0:08:44.040 state and city agencies. It is about moving this conversation 0:08:44.120 --> 0:08:48.760 into a holistic approach and treating violence, particularly gun violence, 0:08:49.040 --> 0:08:52.080 as a public health emergency. So we can allocate the 0:08:52.200 --> 0:08:57.480 resources to be both prevented and how do we deal 0:08:57.600 --> 0:09:00.640 with the immediate crisis that we are facing.
