We're in an age of bandon books. We're 0:05:27.760 --> 0:05:29.800 in an age of controversy about DIEI. 0:05:30.360 --> 0:05:31.320 You know, back in. 0:05:31.440 --> 0:05:37.760 Nineteen eighties, when I first started, back in the late eighties, 0:05:37.839 --> 0:05:40.320 when I opened my bookstore in nineteen ninety, what happened 0:05:40.480 --> 0:05:43.159 is there was a movement back then it was called 0:05:43.520 --> 0:05:50.280 multi culturalism, and all the money was appropriated to help 0:05:50.640 --> 0:05:53.599 level the playing field, and so a lot of money 0:05:53.680 --> 0:05:56.880 was spent to try to integrate and to try to 0:05:56.960 --> 0:06:00.080 balance the inequities. 0:05:58.960 --> 0:06:01.880 That exist in There. 0:06:00.920 --> 0:06:03.440 Are a lot of underserved communities and a lot of 0:06:03.520 --> 0:06:07.679 money and resources don't necessarily reach the people that really 0:06:07.760 --> 0:06:11.360 really needed. And so what happened is they created in 0:06:11.400 --> 0:06:16.800 the nineties the monticulturalists, particularly in the publishing industry as well, 0:06:17.040 --> 0:06:21.040 and so a lot of books were published because of 0:06:21.160 --> 0:06:24.599 the inequities. When you go in sign of major bookstores, 0:06:24.640 --> 0:06:27.800 you didn't see what a handful of black books. Okay, 0:06:27.920 --> 0:06:32.800 maybe one shelf is that? And so our voice wasn't published, we. 0:06:32.560 --> 0:06:35.960 Wasn't on the bookshelves. And so it was a movement 0:06:36.000 --> 0:06:38.200 that took place. Not only was the book a hit, but 0:07:04.720 --> 0:07:07.159 the movie that they made, Waited, that. 0:07:07.279 --> 0:07:07.760 Was a hit. 0:07:08.000 --> 0:07:10.480 The album they made Waiting to Us, that was a hit, 0:07:10.800 --> 0:07:11.920 and in the in the. 0:07:12.200 --> 0:07:13.320 Waiting, I'm sorry. 0:07:13.440 --> 0:07:16.280 And the multiculturalism movement went all over the world, all 0:07:16.280 --> 0:07:19.040 over the university, and these published books. They tried to 0:07:19.040 --> 0:07:23.720 write books there, the representation books that showed to reflect, 0:07:24.280 --> 0:07:29.560 you know, images of black people and and our voice 0:07:30.080 --> 0:07:33.160 and our youth and our children and our young and 0:07:33.240 --> 0:07:40.960 so that itself became controversy, just like affirmative action in universities. But they go to war and come back 0:15:51.040 --> 0:15:51.360 and they. 0:15:51.240 --> 0:15:53.560 Got issues, you know, they witnessed things, they got trauma, 0:15:53.600 --> 0:15:56.520 they got to disorder and they got in there PDSD 0:15:56.600 --> 0:16:02.120 or something like that. Right, So my thing was a 0:16:02.160 --> 0:16:04.320 lot of this behavior is passed on a lot of 0:16:04.320 --> 0:16:07.520 people think that the way you treat a person is 0:16:07.640 --> 0:16:12.240 by and control a person is through physical abuse and 0:16:12.360 --> 0:16:15.640 that type of methodology.
