So Malcolm is a Pan 1:10:43.040 --> 1:10:46.879 African all day, every day. But he's also a Muslim. 1:10:47.120 --> 1:10:51.320 He's also a radical internationalist. King is not just somebody 1:10:51.360 --> 1:10:53.120 who's a man of peace. He's a man of peace. 1:10:53.160 --> 1:10:55.080 He's a man of God. He says the halls of the US Congress 1:11:16.320 --> 1:11:20.120 of running wild with racism. In April fourth, nineteen sixty seven, 1:11:20.120 --> 1:11:22.720 at the Riverside Church in New York, he says that 1:11:22.800 --> 1:11:25.559 the greatest purveyor of violence in the US in the 1:11:25.600 --> 1:11:28.080 world is the United States of America. So that's the 1:11:28.160 --> 1:11:32.519 revolutionary King who goes to places like Marks, Mississippi and 1:11:32.520 --> 1:11:36.040 tells poor black people that during reconstruction they were promised 1:11:36.080 --> 1:11:38.639 forty acres in the mule. They didn't get their forty 1:11:38.640 --> 1:11:40.760 acres in the mule, But he's gonna lead a poor 1:11:40.800 --> 1:11:44.400 people's caravan to go to Washington, DC until they get 1:11:44.439 --> 1:11:46.840 the forty acres in the mule. That's Doctor Martin Luther 1:11:46.960 --> 1:11:49.639 King Junior. So he's both a sword and the shield. 1:11:49.760 --> 1:11:52.120 But Malcolm is as well. And what I argue in 1:11:52.120 --> 1:11:55.040 the book is that the person who most influences Doctor 1:11:55.120 --> 1:11:58.600 King's radicalism is Malcolm X. You know they, you know Charlemagno. 1:11:58.640 --> 1:12:00.600 We talks about how Malcolm and Aki, Malcolm X and 1:12:00.640 --> 1:12:04.439 Doctor King's Doctor King spoke. Do you think they were 1:12:04.640 --> 1:12:07.360 assassinated because they were possibly going to join forces to 1:12:07.439 --> 1:12:10.639 come out together and that would just be too much power. Well, 1:12:10.680 --> 1:12:14.439 I think they definitely are assassinated because they represent a 1:12:14.560 --> 1:12:18.639 threat to the American political system. I think that they 1:12:18.640 --> 1:12:21.679 would have gotten together. They spoke together once on March 1:12:21.720 --> 1:12:24.680 twenty six, nineteen sixty four, at the US Senate. But 1:12:24.960 --> 1:12:27.680 one little known aspect that I get into in the 1:12:27.720 --> 1:12:31.839 book is that Malcolm saw a King in Harlem December seventeenth, 1:12:31.960 --> 1:12:34.400 nineteen sixty four. He was sitting next to Andy Young 1:12:34.520 --> 1:12:38.400 Andrew Young, a former mayor of Atlanta, a former UN ambassador, 1:12:38.680 --> 1:12:41.679 and he heard doctor King give a whole speech after 1:12:41.800 --> 1:12:44.639 King won the Nobel Peace Prize, and not just that. 1:12:45.080 --> 1:12:47.439 He speaks about that speech in Harlem a few days 1:12:47.520 --> 1:12:50.960 later and says that it was a terrific speech. He's impressed, 1:12:51.400 --> 1:12:55.360 and he goes to Alabama to visit with doctor King, 1:12:55.400 --> 1:12:58.360 and doctor King's in prison, and he visits instead with 1:12:58.439 --> 1:13:01.719 Corretta Scott King, doctor, his wife and really political partner. 1:13:01.760 --> 1:13:04.759 We think of, uh, Correta Scott King is just his wife. 1:13:05.040 --> 1:13:09.439 She's a brilliant organizer, political partner, intellectual, she's his his 1:13:09.439 --> 1:13:12.360 his better half, let's let's face it. And so when 1:13:12.400 --> 1:13:15.799 we think about Malcolm, Malcolm was ready to join forces 1:13:15.800 --> 1:13:17.960 with King, but on his own terms, he wasn't going 1:13:18.040 --> 1:13:21.400 to do the same thing. He Malcolm always believed in 1:13:21.600 --> 1:13:26.120 black dignity, King believed in black citizenship. Over time they 1:13:26.240 --> 1:13:29.479 both come to believe in black dignity and citizenship, and 1:13:29.640 --> 1:13:32.839 Malcolm X defined black dignity as the end of world 1:13:32.880 --> 1:13:35.760 white supremacy. Let's let's dig in 1:13:47.240 --> 1:13:48.400 on that a little bit more, because I love the 1:13:48.400 --> 1:13:50.760 concept of radical black dignity as weird, because I've read 1:13:50.800 --> 1:13:53.280 the autobiography of Malcolm X a few times, Love Message 1:13:53.280 --> 1:13:55.679 to the Black Man, Biolijah Muhammed Sweab by those books. 1:13:55.680 --> 1:13:58.920 But I don't remember that concept, you know, explored as 1:13:59.000 --> 1:14:01.200 much as when I read Disorder the Shield, and I 1:14:01.200 --> 1:14:03.679 even incorporated a lot of the content of radical Black 1:14:03.680 --> 1:14:06.679 dignity and commissment speech I gave for South Carolina State, 1:14:06.960 --> 1:14:08.880 you know, about a month ago. But can you dig 1:14:08.880 --> 1:14:10.799 a little deeper on what that is. What is radical 1:14:10.800 --> 1:14:14.879 black dignity. Radical Black dignity for Malcolm X, is radical 1:14:14.960 --> 1:14:18.120 black political self determination. So what that means is that 1:14:18.320 --> 1:14:22.320 Malcolm absolutely had this external critique. He critiqued white supremacy, 1:14:22.920 --> 1:14:26.720 critique institutions that were brutalizing Black people, the police, the 1:14:26.760 --> 1:14:29.600 whole deal. But he also expected a lot of ourselves. 1:14:29.840 --> 1:14:34.120 So Malcolm defines radical Black dignity as Black people coming 1:14:34.120 --> 1:14:37.679 to understand and love themselves through the pain and trauma 1:14:37.760 --> 1:14:42.000 of racial slavery and segregation and brutalization. That we have 1:14:42.080 --> 1:14:44.639 to understand that, but we have to not be as 1:14:44.680 --> 1:14:49.080 hard on ourselves as we usually are. Because Malcolm criticized 1:14:49.160 --> 1:14:52.639 us for loving white people and loving white supremacy too much. 1:14:52.920 --> 1:14:55.360 But what that meant was that we weren't able to 1:14:55.439 --> 1:14:58.559 face how we had been subjugated, how we had been 1:14:58.560 --> 1:15:01.680 subjugated during racial slavery. Reason why Malcolm X goes to 1:15:01.720 --> 1:15:04.320 Africa three times because people don't talk about the nineteen 1:15:04.360 --> 1:15:07.240 fifty nine trip to Africa where he's in Egypt. He's 1:15:07.280 --> 1:15:10.080 in the Middle East. He meets up with President Vice 1:15:10.080 --> 1:15:13.120 President n y El Sadat. He meets up with Prince 1:15:13.160 --> 1:15:16.800 Faisal Saudi Arabia, the whole deal. Malcolm went there, to 1:15:16.880 --> 1:15:19.160 the Middle East and to Africa even before he takes 1:15:19.160 --> 1:15:21.680 to Hajj, because he knew that black people had a 1:15:21.800 --> 1:15:25.280 history before the Middle Passage. So part of that dignity 1:15:25.760 --> 1:15:28.920 was we understood that yes, not only had we been 1:15:29.400 --> 1:15:31.680 kings and queens, and obviously not all of us were 1:15:31.720 --> 1:15:33.840 just kings and queens in Africa, but we had a 1:15:33.960 --> 1:15:38.240 history before the US. We had a history before European 1:15:38.840 --> 1:15:42.400 I won't even call it conquest, but being captives here 1:15:42.640 --> 1:15:47.320 and really recreating Western civilization through our own protests. Another 1:15:47.360 --> 1:15:51.599 part of radical black dignity is black beauty and black love. Malcolm, 1:15:52.520 --> 1:15:56.120 following Marcus Mosiah Garvey, believed in the beauty of black 1:15:56.160 --> 1:16:01.000 people intrinsically black women, black men, black children, in black babies, 1:16:01.280 --> 1:16:03.439 black neighborhoods. So when we think about this idea of 1:16:03.439 --> 1:16:06.240 self determination, and my final point is this is why 1:16:06.280 --> 1:16:09.880 Malcolm has a critique of racial integration, not because he 1:16:09.960 --> 1:16:15.000 doesn't want an equal society, but Malcolm was horrified by 1:16:15.000 --> 1:16:18.839 the fact that it took troops to bring black children 1:16:18.880 --> 1:16:21.759 to school in Little Rock Central High School in nineteen 1:16:21.800 --> 1:16:26.280 fifty seven, whereas King writes a telegram to President Eisenhower 1:16:26.520 --> 1:16:30.080 applauding that in September of nineteen fifty seven, Malcolm is 1:16:30.280 --> 1:16:34.640 angry and mad about that. Why it's a sixth society 1:16:34.960 --> 1:16:38.160 where our children, little black girls and boys, have to 1:16:38.240 --> 1:16:41.200 be guarded by troops to go into a high school 1:16:41.240 --> 1:16:44.400 or an elementary school. And that's why Malcolm says American 1:16:44.520 --> 1:16:48.760 democracy is nothing but American hypocrisy. And very famously he says, 1:16:48.960 --> 1:16:51.840 you can't put a knife nine inches in a person's back, 1:16:52.120 --> 1:16:54.880 take it out three inches and call that progress. You 1:16:54.920 --> 1:16:57.600 haven't taken out the knife, and you haven't even acknowledged 1:16:57.640 --> 1:17:00.680 the wound. So black dignity is us are standing our 1:17:00.720 --> 1:17:04.559 own struggle, loving ourselves through the joy and the trauma 1:17:04.600 --> 1:17:07.439 of that struggles. Remember the reason why Malcolm X is 1:17:07.439 --> 1:17:11.599 the best order in American history. And I'll say doctor 1:17:11.680 --> 1:17:14.519 King's number two. The reason why Malcolm's the best. Malcolm 1:17:14.600 --> 1:17:17.240 has a great sense of humor. He actually forces us 1:17:17.280 --> 1:17:21.320 to confront this through different parables. And when he talks 1:17:21.360 --> 1:17:25.160 about house negroes versus field negroes, he's talking about black dignity. 1:17:25.280 --> 1:17:27.800 But he's also talking that we have class tensions in 1:17:27.800 --> 1:17:31.559 our own community. Sometimes you'll have historians and scholars to say, well, 1:17:31.600 --> 1:17:34.519 the house negro field negro is more complicated than that. 1:17:34.800 --> 1:17:37.760 Malcolm's giving us allegori is that everyone can understand. That's 1:17:37.760 --> 1:17:40.320 why he says, make it plain. So the house Negroes 1:17:40.640 --> 1:17:45.840 were black folks who had more identification with white supremacy 1:17:45.840 --> 1:17:48.120 and white masters. And that's why Malcolm says, when the 1:17:48.160 --> 1:17:51.760 white master got sick, the house negro said, we see right, 1:17:52.080 --> 1:17:56.280 and field negroes. Malcolm defined them like he defined himself, 1:17:56.439 --> 1:17:59.439 black people who were catching hell every day and who 1:17:59.479 --> 1:18:03.519 were bold enough to resist against white supremacy. So black 1:18:03.560 --> 1:18:06.840 dignity is huge, huge, huge, And this is why when 1:18:06.840 --> 1:18:09.800 we think about the Malcolm and Martin, the dichotomy and 1:18:09.880 --> 1:18:13.160 the convergence, it's only because of Malcolm X that doctor 1:18:13.240 --> 1:18:16.320 King starts talking about black dignity. Doctor King starts saying 1:18:16.360 --> 1:18:18.799 black is beautiful, and it's so beautiful to be black. 1:18:19.000 --> 1:18:22.000 Doctor King, by nineteen sixty seven tells us that they 1:18:22.000 --> 1:18:24.880 even tell us little white lies are better than black lives. 1:18:25.400 --> 1:18:28.479 Black lives. That's Doctor King, only because Malcolm X had 1:18:28.520 --> 1:18:32.200 taught all of us about black dignity before Malcolm. We 1:18:32.200 --> 1:18:35.479 were all negroes who turned into black people because of 1:18:35.479 --> 1:18:37.200 Malcolm X. And in the book you lay out how 1:18:37.240 --> 1:18:41.120 they each become the others alter ego. Essentially, to me, 1:18:41.200 --> 1:18:44.360 that's what the book is ultimately about. Can you explain 1:18:44.360 --> 1:18:47.879 it absolutely? When we think about Malcolm and Martin. Over time, 1:18:48.479 --> 1:18:52.600 doctor King becomes much more of a radical and a revolutionary, 1:18:52.880 --> 1:18:56.120 speaking truth to power in an unapologetic way in the 1:18:56.200 --> 1:19:00.200 tone of Malcolm X. My great example there is when 1:19:00.360 --> 1:19:03.360 doctor King is in Marks, Mississippi in nineteen sixty eight 1:19:03.680 --> 1:19:06.479 organizing the Poor People's Campaign. He tells the poor black 1:19:06.479 --> 1:19:08.840 folks in Marks, Mississippi that the way they are living 1:19:08.960 --> 1:19:12.280 is a crime. That's the exact language that Malcolm X 1:19:12.360 --> 1:19:15.760 used to use about this crime against black humanity that 1:19:15.840 --> 1:19:19.639 had occurred. For Malcolm, it's the ballot or the bullet speech. 1:19:19.920 --> 1:19:22.040 The ballot or the bullet speech is the first time 1:19:22.120 --> 1:19:25.680 Malcolm X acknowledges the need for radical black citizenship. He 1:19:25.720 --> 1:19:28.200 had always acknowledged the need for radical black dignity. But 1:19:28.320 --> 1:19:31.920 Malcolm hedges he doesn't believe in American democracy, never does 1:19:32.120 --> 1:19:35.000 he believes in what black people. He says. The reason 1:19:35.040 --> 1:19:37.439 why I think we should do the ballot or the 1:19:37.479 --> 1:19:39.680 bullet is that I want black people to have a 1:19:39.760 --> 1:19:42.920 chance to utilize this political power and see where it 1:19:42.960 --> 1:19:46.160 gets them. Remember, Malcolm X had been in prison. Malcolm 1:19:46.360 --> 1:19:49.800 X's father had been killed early. He always felt it 1:19:49.840 --> 1:19:53.439 was a white supremacist attack. His mother had been institutionalized. 1:19:53.920 --> 1:19:57.040 Malcolm had seen what I call the lower frequencies of 1:19:57.080 --> 1:20:00.719 the United States of America. So he was always about 1:20:00.800 --> 1:20:05.320 democracy working the way in which white people pretended it worked, right. 1:20:05.600 --> 1:20:07.880 But what he did was he had faith in who 1:20:07.960 --> 1:20:11.320 black people. He was schooled by his mother, Louise Norton Little, 1:20:11.400 --> 1:20:14.280 who was from Grenada. So Malcolm has Caribbean blood as 1:20:14.280 --> 1:20:17.000 well as the African African American blood. He was schooled 1:20:17.000 --> 1:20:19.960 by his father, Earl Little, he was schooled by the 1:20:20.040 --> 1:20:22.840 honorable Elijah Mohammed, but he was also schooled by all 1:20:22.840 --> 1:20:26.320 these revolutionary leaders in the Middle East and Africa. Right, 1:20:26.439 --> 1:20:29.280 So when you think about Malcolm becomes closer to king 1:20:29.840 --> 1:20:34.120 through this acknowledgement that we need to end worldwide supremacy, 1:20:34.360 --> 1:20:36.479 not just through self defense, but we're gonna need that 1:20:36.520 --> 1:20:39.679 beloved community. But Malcolm hedges, he says, one I only 1:20:39.720 --> 1:20:43.960 believe in black people visa viva democracy thing. But two 1:20:44.040 --> 1:20:46.600 he says that white people and his language is this 1:20:47.120 --> 1:20:49.880 sincere white people can be part of the movement. What 1:20:49.960 --> 1:20:53.519 did he define as sincere? He defined a sincere as 1:20:53.560 --> 1:20:57.360 what do Boys call abolitionist democracy, white people who are 1:20:57.360 --> 1:21:00.240 gonna be willing to put themselves on the line right 1:21:00.360 --> 1:21:03.960 to transform the entire world. So du Boys always said, 1:21:03.960 --> 1:21:07.320 and W. B. Du Boys is the intellectual who is 1:21:07.360 --> 1:21:09.799 the founder of the NAACP, one of the most important 1:21:09.800 --> 1:21:12.920 intellectuals ever. But what he wrote in a book nineteen 1:21:12.960 --> 1:21:16.120 thirty five called Black Reconstruction was he wrote the true 1:21:16.200 --> 1:21:19.080 history of reconstruction. He pushed back against the lost Cause 1:21:19.160 --> 1:21:21.800 history that had said we were apes and monsters and 1:21:21.840 --> 1:21:25.080 we were raping white women. He showed how black people 1:21:25.120 --> 1:21:28.760 tried to reimagine American democracy. And the only reason the 1:21:28.800 --> 1:21:31.719 country exists in the form and exists now is because 1:21:31.760 --> 1:21:36.160 of our labor, our sweat, our sacrifice, our love, our patriotism. Right. 1:21:36.360 --> 1:21:38.960 And so when we think about Malcolm and Martin, Martin 1:21:39.080 --> 1:21:42.960 becomes closer to Malcolm where he becomes this unfettered revolutionary, 1:21:43.040 --> 1:21:46.759 becomes a pillar of fire, an Old Testament prophet. He's Amos, 1:21:46.800 --> 1:21:49.840 He's Jeremiah, He's Moses. By the end of his life 1:21:50.000 --> 1:21:52.920 and Malcolm becomes closer to King where he starts to 1:21:52.960 --> 1:21:55.800 say that not only is he a prosecuting attorney, he 1:21:55.840 --> 1:21:58.720 becomes Black America's Prime Minister. In the last year of 1:21:58.720 --> 1:22:01.599 his life, Malcolm X had the office at the United Nations. 1:22:01.600 --> 1:22:04.960 Malcolm X could go and speak to Prime Minister Kwame 1:22:05.080 --> 1:22:07.679 and Kruma in Ghana. He could speak to nam Diaza 1:22:07.760 --> 1:22:12.280 Kiway in Nigeria. He could speak to Mohammed Babu, who's 1:22:12.280 --> 1:22:15.120 the Prime Minister of Zanzibar. So that's when he becomes 1:22:15.160 --> 1:22:19.080 closer to Doctor King. So they really converge, and you 1:22:19.080 --> 1:22:23.040 could see the love and admiration that Malcolm has for 1:22:23.160 --> 1:22:27.120 him when he tells Correcti Scott how much he admires 1:22:27.120 --> 1:22:29.919 her husband in Selma. And when you read the statement 1:22:30.040 --> 1:22:35.280 that King sends after Malcolm's assassination, he expresses his admiration 1:22:35.360 --> 1:22:38.400 and says what a great man Malcolm X was who 1:22:38.479 --> 1:22:41.839 was constantly changing. So you can see the convergence between 1:22:41.880 --> 1:22:44.000 both of them even in their lifetimes. Let me tell 1:22:44.000 --> 1:22:46.280 you something, man.
