Mark and I chopped it up with him 17 00:00:45,320 --> 00:00:47,040 Speaker 1: after a win on Sunday. 18 00:00:47,080 --> 00:00:47,600 Speaker 3: This was great. 19 00:00:48,080 --> 00:00:50,599 Speaker 4: Take a listen, and we welcome into the hun Day 20 00:00:50,640 --> 00:00:54,520 Speaker 4: Texans Radio Studio Executive Vice President and general Manager Nick Asario. Nick, 21 00:00:54,600 --> 00:00:57,040 Speaker 4: thanks for being with us, fellows, good to be here. 22 00:00:57,120 --> 00:00:59,920 Speaker 4: Congratulations on the victory. It's week four. We'll get into 23 00:01:00,120 --> 00:01:03,040 Speaker 4: all of it about Pittsburgh in a moment here, but 24 00:01:03,280 --> 00:01:06,560 Speaker 4: let's reminisce a little bit about beating the Jaguars on 25 00:01:06,680 --> 00:01:09,759 Speaker 4: the road. Real great win for the Texans, winning by 26 00:01:09,840 --> 00:01:12,479 Speaker 4: twenty and a lot of the phases coming together. Real 27 00:01:12,520 --> 00:01:14,360 Speaker 4: complimentary football being displayed. 28 00:01:14,800 --> 00:01:17,200 Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean really credited the players and the coaches 29 00:01:17,319 --> 00:01:19,680 Speaker 5: for the week. I'd say, let's say it's probably one 30 00:01:19,680 --> 00:01:21,760 Speaker 5: of our harder weeks of practice, but it was a 31 00:01:21,760 --> 00:01:23,880 Speaker 5: tough week of practice. We were out there on Thursday, 32 00:01:24,360 --> 00:01:25,920 Speaker 5: had a lot of plays, it was hot, you know, 33 00:01:25,959 --> 00:01:28,000 Speaker 5: players were taxed, but they pushed through it, you know, 34 00:01:28,080 --> 00:01:31,640 Speaker 5: mentally and physically, got themselves ready to go, and we 35 00:01:31,640 --> 00:01:34,520 Speaker 5: were able to get contributions really from all three phases, 36 00:01:34,520 --> 00:01:36,840 Speaker 5: which to win in this league, you're gonna have to, 37 00:01:37,200 --> 00:01:39,120 Speaker 5: you know, that's how you win games. So it's not 38 00:01:39,120 --> 00:01:41,119 Speaker 5: gonna be about one side of the ball doing one 39 00:01:41,120 --> 00:01:43,000 Speaker 5: thing one week and then the next week, you know, 40 00:01:43,040 --> 00:01:44,680 Speaker 5: the other side does a little bit better than the other. 41 00:01:45,400 --> 00:01:48,240 Speaker 5: At some point, you're gonna need everybody to contribute. And 42 00:01:48,520 --> 00:01:51,360 Speaker 5: I think that was emblematic of where we were on Sunday, 43 00:01:51,360 --> 00:01:52,880 Speaker 5: and it was a great team victory. 44 00:01:53,040 --> 00:01:54,920 Speaker 2: Okay, there's one day gonna be a thirty for thirty 45 00:01:54,920 --> 00:01:57,840 Speaker 2: on Andrew Beck's kickoff return, So we need sound and 46 00:01:58,240 --> 00:02:01,880 Speaker 2: quotes from everybody. Nick, So where were you when Andrew 47 00:02:01,920 --> 00:02:04,520 Speaker 2: Beck dropped the kickoff? And what are you thinking at 48 00:02:04,520 --> 00:02:06,360 Speaker 2: that moment? Can you say it on radio? 49 00:02:06,600 --> 00:02:06,840 Speaker 6: Sure? 50 00:02:06,960 --> 00:02:10,160 Speaker 5: No, I mean it was really bad football turned good football. 51 00:02:10,280 --> 00:02:12,000 Speaker 5: So it was a little bit of a not a 52 00:02:12,080 --> 00:02:13,919 Speaker 5: mortar kick. I mean it was placed there a little 53 00:02:13,919 --> 00:02:16,359 Speaker 5: bit short. So Mike was coming up, Andrew was going 54 00:02:16,400 --> 00:02:20,200 Speaker 5: back and just hope that there's some communication about who's 55 00:02:20,200 --> 00:02:23,160 Speaker 5: going to handle the ball, and they end up colliding 56 00:02:23,200 --> 00:02:24,880 Speaker 5: with each other and then you just got to let 57 00:02:24,880 --> 00:02:28,560 Speaker 5: it play itself out. I mean, what happened really, the 58 00:02:28,560 --> 00:02:31,760 Speaker 5: coverage unit, all ten to eleven guys ended up on 59 00:02:31,800 --> 00:02:34,880 Speaker 5: a right inside the right hash almost on the numbers, 60 00:02:34,919 --> 00:02:37,680 Speaker 5: so they really didn't have anything leverage to the backside. 61 00:02:38,200 --> 00:02:41,160 Speaker 5: So when Andrews started that way, there was maybe one 62 00:02:41,200 --> 00:02:44,000 Speaker 5: player there and then they kind of pursued the ball. 63 00:02:45,240 --> 00:02:47,720 Speaker 5: I mean half joking, and everybody's kind of joking. But 64 00:02:47,760 --> 00:02:50,120 Speaker 5: Andrew for the position, is probably one of the more 65 00:02:50,120 --> 00:02:53,359 Speaker 5: athletic players, like he actually runs well. Even going back 66 00:02:53,400 --> 00:02:56,880 Speaker 5: to you know, to Denver last year, last few years. 67 00:02:57,080 --> 00:02:58,639 Speaker 5: I want to say it was like week two or 68 00:02:58,680 --> 00:03:01,400 Speaker 5: week one against Seattle. Caught a steamer out there something 69 00:03:01,440 --> 00:03:05,200 Speaker 5: near the sideline from Wilson. So Andrew runs runs well 70 00:03:05,240 --> 00:03:07,960 Speaker 5: for his size. So he's got good size, he's got 71 00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:11,040 Speaker 5: good toughness, he's got good straight line speed, and the 72 00:03:11,080 --> 00:03:13,880 Speaker 5: fact that the coverage was really pinned themselves in. I 73 00:03:13,919 --> 00:03:16,560 Speaker 5: think once Andrew kind of got ahead of steam, then 74 00:03:16,720 --> 00:03:18,560 Speaker 5: he kind of got moving and he recorded one of 75 00:03:18,600 --> 00:03:21,680 Speaker 5: the faster times ever for whatever that size. But you 76 00:03:21,720 --> 00:03:25,959 Speaker 5: know it was it's really not sound football, but sometimes 77 00:03:26,160 --> 00:03:29,440 Speaker 5: guys have to make football plays. We're just fortunate that 78 00:03:29,480 --> 00:03:32,079 Speaker 5: we're able to retain possession of the football and it 79 00:03:32,200 --> 00:03:34,920 Speaker 5: turned into being a pretty you know, significant play in 80 00:03:34,920 --> 00:03:35,280 Speaker 5: the game. 81 00:03:35,680 --> 00:03:39,480 Speaker 4: Also on special teams, Will Anderson blocked field goal. Apparently 82 00:03:39,520 --> 00:03:42,680 Speaker 4: he missed the first field goal trip he wasn't on 83 00:03:42,720 --> 00:03:45,200 Speaker 4: the field for that one, but he was for the 84 00:03:45,200 --> 00:03:47,320 Speaker 4: second one and got the block. So good day on 85 00:03:47,360 --> 00:03:49,000 Speaker 4: special teams overall, great days. 86 00:03:49,360 --> 00:03:49,600 Speaker 6: Yeah. 87 00:03:49,680 --> 00:03:51,600 Speaker 5: I mean, anytime you get a block field goal and 88 00:03:51,640 --> 00:03:54,400 Speaker 5: you score in a kicking game, you know, that's usually 89 00:03:54,400 --> 00:03:57,400 Speaker 5: a pretty good day. So we other than the one 90 00:03:57,480 --> 00:04:01,560 Speaker 5: kickoff return that Agnew had who's really difficult cover. We're 91 00:04:01,600 --> 00:04:03,960 Speaker 5: able to kind of control field position there. They didn't 92 00:04:04,000 --> 00:04:06,400 Speaker 5: have any punt return yards, so I mean some of 93 00:04:06,480 --> 00:04:08,440 Speaker 5: those kicks were good, some we got to bounce. So 94 00:04:09,040 --> 00:04:12,120 Speaker 5: sometimes things kind of go your way. But I think 95 00:04:12,200 --> 00:04:14,960 Speaker 5: even just the whole Will on field goal block, you're 96 00:04:14,960 --> 00:04:17,440 Speaker 5: gonna use your best players. They're gonna use all your players, 97 00:04:17,520 --> 00:04:20,320 Speaker 5: and if they give you an opportunity for an advantage 98 00:04:20,320 --> 00:04:22,440 Speaker 5: to make a play, then we're gonna use him. You 99 00:04:22,440 --> 00:04:24,440 Speaker 5: see a lot of starting caliber players that play in 100 00:04:24,440 --> 00:04:26,720 Speaker 5: a punt team, so you only have forty seven to 101 00:04:26,760 --> 00:04:28,279 Speaker 5: forty eight guys you can bring to the game, So 102 00:04:28,680 --> 00:04:30,920 Speaker 5: you're gonna need everybody to maybe do more than one 103 00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:33,880 Speaker 5: thing other than maybe a quarterback if they can. So 104 00:04:34,480 --> 00:04:36,760 Speaker 5: I would say in Will's k Will was close the 105 00:04:36,800 --> 00:04:40,039 Speaker 5: week before, so I'm sure they're gonna be conscious of 106 00:04:40,120 --> 00:04:43,359 Speaker 5: him in field goal protection now. So I might have 107 00:04:43,400 --> 00:04:44,800 Speaker 5: to come up with a different way to see if 108 00:04:44,800 --> 00:04:47,000 Speaker 5: we can create some pressure, you know, against a good 109 00:04:47,080 --> 00:04:47,760 Speaker 5: kicker this week. 110 00:04:47,920 --> 00:04:50,240 Speaker 2: I couldn't help but think about when Will Block that 111 00:04:50,600 --> 00:04:53,560 Speaker 2: story you had said about his time at Alabama about 112 00:04:53,920 --> 00:04:56,560 Speaker 2: here's the alpha of the Alphas at Alabama, Like the 113 00:04:56,600 --> 00:04:59,120 Speaker 2: guy that does everything defensively, and yet there he is 114 00:04:59,160 --> 00:05:01,080 Speaker 2: sitting in front row and center for a special teams 115 00:05:01,120 --> 00:05:03,880 Speaker 2: meeting at Alabama and College. I mean, it just it's 116 00:05:03,920 --> 00:05:07,240 Speaker 2: just kind of amazing that those things translate from high 117 00:05:07,279 --> 00:05:09,720 Speaker 2: school to college to pro and there it comes up 118 00:05:09,760 --> 00:05:12,320 Speaker 2: and you know, the biggest moment of the of the game. 119 00:05:12,640 --> 00:05:15,960 Speaker 5: Yeah, anytime you're evaluating a player, you're looking for consistency 120 00:05:16,400 --> 00:05:19,440 Speaker 5: across the board in all areas. So do they do 121 00:05:19,480 --> 00:05:21,560 Speaker 5: it all the time or is it a one time 122 00:05:21,600 --> 00:05:24,160 Speaker 5: thing or is there a reason they're doing it. I mean, 123 00:05:24,200 --> 00:05:27,200 Speaker 5: CJ and Will both sit in the front row in 124 00:05:27,279 --> 00:05:30,360 Speaker 5: our meetings here, so they're front and center, they're right 125 00:05:30,400 --> 00:05:35,120 Speaker 5: in front, they're paying attention, they're engaged, and they probably 126 00:05:35,440 --> 00:05:37,400 Speaker 5: and Will did the same thing. I'm sure CJ was 127 00:05:37,440 --> 00:05:39,800 Speaker 5: the same way there. So whoever the players are, they're 128 00:05:39,800 --> 00:05:42,919 Speaker 5: going to be who they are, and that's part of 129 00:05:42,960 --> 00:05:45,840 Speaker 5: our evaluation process to see if there's consistency and how 130 00:05:45,839 --> 00:05:48,320 Speaker 5: they approach their how they approach their job. 131 00:05:48,520 --> 00:05:52,240 Speaker 4: All right, So your quarterback, let's leave the on field 132 00:05:52,240 --> 00:05:55,200 Speaker 4: stuff alone for a moment. He says stuff like pressure 133 00:05:55,360 --> 00:05:58,480 Speaker 4: is a privilege. Nick, That's amazing. I mean, this guy 134 00:05:58,680 --> 00:06:01,480 Speaker 4: is so young, but his process, the way he goes 135 00:06:01,520 --> 00:06:03,080 Speaker 4: about his work is impressive. 136 00:06:03,080 --> 00:06:04,360 Speaker 7: Can you speak to that a little bit. 137 00:06:04,560 --> 00:06:04,720 Speaker 3: Yeah. 138 00:06:04,760 --> 00:06:07,920 Speaker 5: I think there's a propensity sometimes to put a you know, 139 00:06:08,000 --> 00:06:12,640 Speaker 5: associate an age or number with youthfulness. But even regardless 140 00:06:12,640 --> 00:06:15,599 Speaker 5: of your age, you can have i would say, experience 141 00:06:15,680 --> 00:06:19,320 Speaker 5: and maturity beyond your years. And I think that's one 142 00:06:19,360 --> 00:06:22,120 Speaker 5: of the things that stood out with him through the process. 143 00:06:23,600 --> 00:06:28,120 Speaker 5: He's very confident in himself. He believes in himself, and 144 00:06:28,200 --> 00:06:32,599 Speaker 5: he cares about winning, and he's very competitive. And those 145 00:06:32,640 --> 00:06:38,080 Speaker 5: things have continued to manifest themselves from call it May, June, July, 146 00:06:38,279 --> 00:06:41,800 Speaker 5: August and into the start of the season. And you know, 147 00:06:41,839 --> 00:06:46,000 Speaker 5: when you have success as a team and individually, then 148 00:06:46,200 --> 00:06:49,320 Speaker 5: you start to maybe believe. Not that you question in 149 00:06:49,360 --> 00:06:51,679 Speaker 5: the beginning, but I mean what we do is hard. 150 00:06:51,760 --> 00:06:54,159 Speaker 5: I mean this league is very hard. Each week is 151 00:06:54,160 --> 00:06:57,080 Speaker 5: a significant challenge. When you're a younger player, You're gonna 152 00:06:57,120 --> 00:06:59,360 Speaker 5: have to deal with things and face things that you 153 00:06:59,400 --> 00:07:01,560 Speaker 5: may or may not have had a deal with in college, 154 00:07:01,640 --> 00:07:04,120 Speaker 5: regardless of where you played, regardless of the stature of 155 00:07:04,120 --> 00:07:07,280 Speaker 5: the program. So I think it really speaks to who 156 00:07:07,400 --> 00:07:10,600 Speaker 5: CJ is and kind of what he's about and you're 157 00:07:10,640 --> 00:07:13,720 Speaker 5: looking for just I would say continued growth and improvement 158 00:07:13,760 --> 00:07:16,560 Speaker 5: and maturity. And I would say we're still kind of 159 00:07:16,560 --> 00:07:19,360 Speaker 5: in the early part of the season for younger players, 160 00:07:19,440 --> 00:07:22,760 Speaker 5: especially rookies. Once we get to week eight, nine, ten, 161 00:07:23,680 --> 00:07:26,480 Speaker 5: can you continue that for the duration of the season, 162 00:07:26,520 --> 00:07:28,480 Speaker 5: because you still have another eight to nine weeks in 163 00:07:28,520 --> 00:07:30,640 Speaker 5: front of you, So it's going to take a certain 164 00:07:30,680 --> 00:07:34,280 Speaker 5: level of mental toughness and fortitude to get from start 165 00:07:34,280 --> 00:07:34,720 Speaker 5: to finish. 166 00:07:34,920 --> 00:07:37,640 Speaker 2: Along those lines, Nick, we talk about that and it's 167 00:07:37,640 --> 00:07:40,920 Speaker 2: a huge part of their experience as a rookie, as 168 00:07:40,960 --> 00:07:45,200 Speaker 2: a young player. How much is the adversity that a 169 00:07:45,240 --> 00:07:48,520 Speaker 2: young guy has faced matter to you and the evaluation process? 170 00:07:48,520 --> 00:07:50,360 Speaker 2: Because you talk about CJ. It's the last one to 171 00:07:50,360 --> 00:07:52,680 Speaker 2: get an invite to Lead eleven. He really didn't have 172 00:07:52,760 --> 00:07:54,120 Speaker 2: a lot of teams on him until after a Lead 173 00:07:54,120 --> 00:07:55,960 Speaker 2: eleven he goes to Ohio State. He since behind Justin. 174 00:07:55,960 --> 00:07:57,560 Speaker 2: He's got to fight for the job. The viewers is 175 00:07:57,600 --> 00:08:00,080 Speaker 2: there Tank Dell? Same thing you know, Tank is go 176 00:08:00,080 --> 00:08:01,920 Speaker 2: on to high school, then he's gotta go junior college. 177 00:08:01,960 --> 00:08:03,720 Speaker 2: Route he gets to Houston, nobody really knows who he is. 178 00:08:03,840 --> 00:08:05,680 Speaker 2: They've gone through adversity. How much did that sort of 179 00:08:05,680 --> 00:08:07,480 Speaker 2: matter in your evaluation process? 180 00:08:08,160 --> 00:08:10,800 Speaker 5: It's a big part of it. So the reality is 181 00:08:11,520 --> 00:08:15,000 Speaker 5: we're all gonna face challenges. We face challenges every single day, 182 00:08:15,240 --> 00:08:17,640 Speaker 5: and then when you get into the NFL, i'd say 183 00:08:17,640 --> 00:08:19,680 Speaker 5: there's a little bit more of a heighten there's eyes 184 00:08:19,720 --> 00:08:22,600 Speaker 5: on you. Everybody's watching your every move and it's not 185 00:08:22,720 --> 00:08:24,600 Speaker 5: gonna go your way all the time. 186 00:08:24,800 --> 00:08:26,680 Speaker 6: So you're gonna have to bounce back. 187 00:08:26,680 --> 00:08:28,320 Speaker 5: You're gonna have to put a play behind you, You're 188 00:08:28,320 --> 00:08:31,120 Speaker 5: gonna have to put a game behind you, you're gonna 189 00:08:31,160 --> 00:08:33,400 Speaker 5: get blown out. What do you do the next week? 190 00:08:33,800 --> 00:08:36,360 Speaker 5: And this league is really designed for everybody to be 191 00:08:36,520 --> 00:08:39,400 Speaker 5: right about five hundred, so everybody. It's the same salary 192 00:08:39,400 --> 00:08:43,560 Speaker 5: cap for everybody, same amount of roster spots. So you're 193 00:08:43,559 --> 00:08:45,840 Speaker 5: gonna have to deal with something, and we're gonna deal 194 00:08:45,840 --> 00:08:47,960 Speaker 5: with things as the year progresses as well. We've had 195 00:08:48,000 --> 00:08:51,160 Speaker 5: to deal with some i would say personnel issues from 196 00:08:51,200 --> 00:08:53,840 Speaker 5: an injury standpoint. But how do you handle it? Do 197 00:08:53,880 --> 00:08:57,600 Speaker 5: you make excuses? Do you move forward? Do you self correct? 198 00:08:58,240 --> 00:09:00,800 Speaker 5: And you build a little just alluded to, you build 199 00:09:00,800 --> 00:09:03,240 Speaker 5: a mental toughness of mental fortitude when you have to 200 00:09:03,240 --> 00:09:05,480 Speaker 5: face some things. So look, some have a little bit 201 00:09:05,520 --> 00:09:07,560 Speaker 5: easier than others, but at some point you're gonna have 202 00:09:07,640 --> 00:09:12,600 Speaker 5: to do something difficult and face difficult challenges, and a 203 00:09:12,640 --> 00:09:14,480 Speaker 5: true measure of who you are is how you handle 204 00:09:14,480 --> 00:09:15,160 Speaker 5: that situation. 205 00:09:15,320 --> 00:09:15,640 Speaker 3: All right. 206 00:09:15,679 --> 00:09:18,000 Speaker 4: So we visited on the first day of training camp, 207 00:09:18,440 --> 00:09:21,199 Speaker 4: and if that time, I got my crystal ball out 208 00:09:21,240 --> 00:09:23,320 Speaker 4: and said, hey, week three, you're gonna throw for two 209 00:09:23,360 --> 00:09:26,480 Speaker 4: to eighty two touchdowns, no sacks, win by twenty with 210 00:09:26,600 --> 00:09:29,200 Speaker 4: three offensive linemen who are not here today the first 211 00:09:29,280 --> 00:09:34,400 Speaker 4: day of training camp. What would your reaction be, Uh. 212 00:09:33,800 --> 00:09:36,199 Speaker 5: Maybe we're playing a different team or a different game, 213 00:09:36,520 --> 00:09:37,840 Speaker 5: or we're in a different sport. 214 00:09:38,080 --> 00:09:40,120 Speaker 6: So but look, this is the reality. 215 00:09:40,160 --> 00:09:41,839 Speaker 5: And I know it's kind of cliche to say the 216 00:09:41,920 --> 00:09:44,600 Speaker 5: NFL is week to week, but it's it's really it's 217 00:09:44,640 --> 00:09:47,000 Speaker 5: day to day. So, I mean, there's gonna be things 218 00:09:47,000 --> 00:09:49,200 Speaker 5: that we're gonna deal with this week, but we can't 219 00:09:49,200 --> 00:09:50,840 Speaker 5: lose sight of we have to get ready to play 220 00:09:50,840 --> 00:09:53,480 Speaker 5: a good Pittsburgh Steeler team and they really don't care 221 00:09:53,720 --> 00:09:56,400 Speaker 5: what we're dealing with or what's going on, and vice versa. 222 00:09:56,480 --> 00:09:59,760 Speaker 5: They've lost some players, some really good players, but that's 223 00:09:59,840 --> 00:10:02,640 Speaker 5: just the business that we're in and you really have 224 00:10:02,720 --> 00:10:04,559 Speaker 5: to embrace that if you have the right mindset and 225 00:10:04,559 --> 00:10:07,079 Speaker 5: the right attitude and the right approach, like you welcome 226 00:10:07,160 --> 00:10:08,079 Speaker 5: that and you. 227 00:10:08,120 --> 00:10:09,680 Speaker 6: Want to push forward. 228 00:10:10,200 --> 00:10:13,600 Speaker 5: And really, from our perspective, it's nice to win, but 229 00:10:13,679 --> 00:10:15,760 Speaker 5: now we have to put that behind us and get 230 00:10:15,800 --> 00:10:17,800 Speaker 5: ready for the next opportunity that's in front of us 231 00:10:18,040 --> 00:10:20,200 Speaker 5: and then try to go one and oh this week, Okay. 232 00:10:20,080 --> 00:10:21,839 Speaker 2: Let's put it behind us. That it's behind us. So 233 00:10:21,920 --> 00:10:25,360 Speaker 2: let's talk Pittsburgh Steelers. They have a lot they also 234 00:10:25,400 --> 00:10:29,599 Speaker 2: have a high Smith defense is pretty good, Pickett Pickings, 235 00:10:29,720 --> 00:10:31,559 Speaker 2: a lot of players that a lot of people know. 236 00:10:32,120 --> 00:10:33,280 Speaker 6: Nick. Let's get the scout on. 237 00:10:33,320 --> 00:10:34,600 Speaker 3: Report of the Pittsburgh Steelers. 238 00:10:34,720 --> 00:10:37,080 Speaker 5: Yeah, I would just say, big picture, you're probably talking 239 00:10:37,120 --> 00:10:39,280 Speaker 5: about one of the model franchises in the history of 240 00:10:39,320 --> 00:10:41,720 Speaker 5: the NFL. I mean, since nineteen sixty nine, you know, 241 00:10:41,760 --> 00:10:45,000 Speaker 5: you've had three coaches and coach Noll, Coach Kywer, and 242 00:10:45,000 --> 00:10:48,080 Speaker 5: then now coach Tomlin. Coach Tomlin is the I think 243 00:10:48,320 --> 00:10:51,079 Speaker 5: number of wins second from a win standpoint, but he's 244 00:10:51,080 --> 00:10:53,880 Speaker 5: got the highest winning percentage. So they're a model of 245 00:10:53,920 --> 00:10:57,480 Speaker 5: consistency and that starts with, you know, the ownership group 246 00:10:57,520 --> 00:11:00,000 Speaker 5: at the top, with the Rooney family. I'd say Kevin 247 00:11:00,120 --> 00:11:02,679 Speaker 5: Colbert was certainly a big part of what they did 248 00:11:02,720 --> 00:11:05,559 Speaker 5: and what they've built. They've always been a good, i 249 00:11:05,600 --> 00:11:08,240 Speaker 5: would say defensive team. They going back to the Steel 250 00:11:08,280 --> 00:11:11,400 Speaker 5: Curtain days, but they've always had good edge players from 251 00:11:11,559 --> 00:11:14,920 Speaker 5: Joey Porter to Gilden to Greg Lloyd to Kevin Green 252 00:11:15,679 --> 00:11:17,760 Speaker 5: and you know, you alluded to it, John, you know, 253 00:11:17,880 --> 00:11:22,360 Speaker 5: they and Watt and high Smith are probably the best 254 00:11:22,360 --> 00:11:23,880 Speaker 5: tandem in the league or one of the best hands 255 00:11:23,880 --> 00:11:25,920 Speaker 5: in the league. They present a lot of problems, so 256 00:11:26,600 --> 00:11:29,840 Speaker 5: good on defense, good young players. They've kind of had 257 00:11:29,880 --> 00:11:32,160 Speaker 5: a little bit of turnover at the inside linebacker spot, 258 00:11:32,240 --> 00:11:36,560 Speaker 5: you know, signing Landon, you know, Houston's own Landa Roberts Kawan, 259 00:11:36,640 --> 00:11:39,600 Speaker 5: Alexander who's experienced, you know, was in San Francisco's with 260 00:11:39,640 --> 00:11:40,120 Speaker 5: the Jets. 261 00:11:40,400 --> 00:11:41,679 Speaker 6: Signed Hulkoman free agency. 262 00:11:42,400 --> 00:11:44,760 Speaker 5: Make a Fitzpatrick is probably one of the best players 263 00:11:44,760 --> 00:11:47,040 Speaker 5: in the NFL, and a defensive side of the ball 264 00:11:47,160 --> 00:11:50,880 Speaker 5: creates a lot of negative plays. Good tackler, really instinctive, 265 00:11:51,800 --> 00:11:54,120 Speaker 5: and they've kind of, you know, turned the corner position 266 00:11:54,200 --> 00:11:56,839 Speaker 5: over to a degree. Signed Patrick Peterson. He's had a 267 00:11:56,920 --> 00:12:00,000 Speaker 5: very illustrious career. Drafted Joey Porter Junior in second round 268 00:12:00,080 --> 00:12:03,200 Speaker 5: on who's big, long and fast. They had a Dez 269 00:12:03,240 --> 00:12:06,760 Speaker 5: here after training camp. Shandon Sullivan are inside, added Kean 270 00:12:06,840 --> 00:12:09,560 Speaker 5: O'Neil at safety, so they play a lot of people. 271 00:12:09,880 --> 00:12:13,600 Speaker 5: They have good depth, even without Hayward, who's a really 272 00:12:13,640 --> 00:12:17,319 Speaker 5: good football player. They have good good front Ogan Jobi's 273 00:12:17,320 --> 00:12:20,400 Speaker 5: given him a lot of good snaps here. So I mean, 274 00:12:20,480 --> 00:12:22,000 Speaker 5: I don't want to say we're gonna be talking about 275 00:12:22,000 --> 00:12:24,000 Speaker 5: this every week, but each week we're gonna be facing 276 00:12:24,000 --> 00:12:27,720 Speaker 5: a pretty good front seven. And now offensively, Kenny's definitely 277 00:12:27,720 --> 00:12:30,319 Speaker 5: made progress from last year to this year. So they 278 00:12:30,320 --> 00:12:32,000 Speaker 5: were I want to say, seven to two their last 279 00:12:32,080 --> 00:12:33,959 Speaker 5: nine games last year, and Kenny was a big part 280 00:12:33,960 --> 00:12:37,080 Speaker 5: of that. Kind of his arc and improvement development has 281 00:12:37,080 --> 00:12:37,800 Speaker 5: been a big part of it. 282 00:12:37,880 --> 00:12:40,280 Speaker 6: Nase has been a thousand yard back back to back seasons. 283 00:12:41,160 --> 00:12:44,920 Speaker 5: Warren undrafted player who's kind of sneaky, sort of getting 284 00:12:44,960 --> 00:12:46,320 Speaker 5: himself into the mix here a little bit. 285 00:12:46,320 --> 00:12:47,680 Speaker 6: Friar Moots reliable target. 286 00:12:47,720 --> 00:12:50,760 Speaker 5: Drafted Washington in the second round to be without Deontay 287 00:12:50,840 --> 00:12:51,960 Speaker 5: Johnson here for a little bit. 288 00:12:52,000 --> 00:12:53,360 Speaker 6: He's one of their better offensive players. 289 00:12:53,360 --> 00:12:56,520 Speaker 5: But Pickens is I would say rare his combination of size, 290 00:12:56,559 --> 00:13:00,839 Speaker 5: speed and athleticism and a good solid veteran offensive line, 291 00:13:01,000 --> 00:13:03,040 Speaker 5: you know. And they drafted Project Jones in the first round, 292 00:13:03,080 --> 00:13:05,080 Speaker 5: so good in the kicking game. And Boswell is a 293 00:13:05,080 --> 00:13:08,400 Speaker 5: really good kicker, kicks in a hard climate. And they 294 00:13:08,520 --> 00:13:11,320 Speaker 5: kill a Brew i'd say has been a solid performer 295 00:13:11,360 --> 00:13:12,080 Speaker 5: in a kicking games. 296 00:13:12,120 --> 00:13:13,480 Speaker 6: So they're a good football team. 297 00:13:13,520 --> 00:13:15,720 Speaker 5: They're two and one when they scored two touchdowns on 298 00:13:15,760 --> 00:13:19,040 Speaker 5: defense a couple of weeks ago against Cleveland. Offensively, they 299 00:13:19,520 --> 00:13:22,480 Speaker 5: hit a big play against Vegas there the other night 300 00:13:22,600 --> 00:13:24,840 Speaker 5: that Calvin Austin on third down and then they had 301 00:13:24,840 --> 00:13:27,400 Speaker 5: a good drive there in a third quarter resulted in 302 00:13:27,440 --> 00:13:29,320 Speaker 5: a touchdown there from pickt to Friar move. 303 00:13:29,400 --> 00:13:31,640 Speaker 6: So a big challenge this week. 304 00:13:32,000 --> 00:13:34,040 Speaker 5: I think the biggest thing is, you know, you can't 305 00:13:34,120 --> 00:13:36,200 Speaker 5: let players that can ruin the game ruin the game. 306 00:13:36,320 --> 00:13:39,000 Speaker 5: So I mean, look TJ's I mean, I think jj'said 307 00:13:39,040 --> 00:13:40,839 Speaker 5: something about this, like he's the best defensive player in 308 00:13:40,880 --> 00:13:43,839 Speaker 5: the league. Probably hard to argue with him. I mean, 309 00:13:44,200 --> 00:13:47,360 Speaker 5: he does really everything well, and he plays really hard, 310 00:13:47,520 --> 00:13:50,480 Speaker 5: and he's very gifted. So you know, it would be 311 00:13:50,480 --> 00:13:52,560 Speaker 5: a big challenge, but I think our players are looking 312 00:13:52,559 --> 00:13:54,800 Speaker 5: forward to the opportunity to try to capitalize on some 313 00:13:54,840 --> 00:13:56,680 Speaker 5: of the things they did last week and then see 314 00:13:56,720 --> 00:13:58,640 Speaker 5: if we can do that again against a good Pittsburgh team. 315 00:13:58,679 --> 00:14:00,800 Speaker 2: Nick, one of my favorites in this draft class was 316 00:14:00,880 --> 00:14:02,240 Speaker 2: Camo Bent. What have you seen from him? 317 00:14:02,360 --> 00:14:05,439 Speaker 5: Yeah, No, he's actually starting to come on here a 318 00:14:05,480 --> 00:14:08,000 Speaker 5: little bit. I think without Cam being in there, it's 319 00:14:08,000 --> 00:14:09,880 Speaker 5: an opportunity for Bent. I mean, he's a little bit 320 00:14:09,880 --> 00:14:11,880 Speaker 5: more a zero to one technique, kind of plays on 321 00:14:11,920 --> 00:14:14,800 Speaker 5: the nose, but he has good athleticism for his size. 322 00:14:14,800 --> 00:14:17,080 Speaker 5: He's probably maybe a little more agile and nifty than 323 00:14:17,080 --> 00:14:19,760 Speaker 5: maybe we thought he was. In Sack the other night, 324 00:14:19,800 --> 00:14:22,240 Speaker 5: he kind of got on the edge of James there 325 00:14:22,280 --> 00:14:24,560 Speaker 5: in Vegas. So it looks like he's going to be 326 00:14:24,560 --> 00:14:27,880 Speaker 5: a good player. It looks like their players that they 327 00:14:27,960 --> 00:14:31,560 Speaker 5: drafted over the last few years, this year, last year, 328 00:14:31,600 --> 00:14:33,360 Speaker 5: the year before, which I think Kevin was a part 329 00:14:33,400 --> 00:14:35,240 Speaker 5: of that looks like they're going to be some of 330 00:14:35,240 --> 00:14:37,120 Speaker 5: their better players. So they've been a really good draft 331 00:14:37,160 --> 00:14:39,400 Speaker 5: and developed team. I think they kind of provide a 332 00:14:39,440 --> 00:14:41,120 Speaker 5: template in a blueprint of kind of how you want 333 00:14:41,160 --> 00:14:44,160 Speaker 5: to build an organization, a franchise, and it kind of 334 00:14:44,200 --> 00:14:46,760 Speaker 5: just speaks to their history and you know, you're talking 335 00:14:46,800 --> 00:14:50,800 Speaker 5: about one of the more esteemed franchises in football and sports. 336 00:14:51,320 --> 00:14:55,000 Speaker 4: Nick Texan's running game got a little bit better against 337 00:14:55,000 --> 00:14:57,480 Speaker 4: the Jaguars. There was some progress there. What are you 338 00:14:57,520 --> 00:14:59,880 Speaker 4: seeing overall as that continues to develop. 339 00:15:00,120 --> 00:15:02,120 Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean a little bit more volume base, but 340 00:15:02,160 --> 00:15:03,680 Speaker 5: were able to churn out some yards there at the 341 00:15:03,760 --> 00:15:04,960 Speaker 5: end of the game in four minutes. 342 00:15:05,000 --> 00:15:08,000 Speaker 6: So again we talked about this last week. 343 00:15:08,040 --> 00:15:10,680 Speaker 5: It's just getting the runs started, getting the blockers distributed 344 00:15:10,680 --> 00:15:14,680 Speaker 5: appropriately in the backs, just trusting the read, trusting the blocks, 345 00:15:15,120 --> 00:15:17,120 Speaker 5: and then stick your foot in the ground and getting vertical. 346 00:15:17,160 --> 00:15:18,760 Speaker 5: But you know, DP had a couple of good runs, 347 00:15:18,800 --> 00:15:20,520 Speaker 5: Motor had some good runs. So we were able to 348 00:15:20,560 --> 00:15:23,560 Speaker 5: turn out some yards and some clocks. So just try 349 00:15:23,640 --> 00:15:25,640 Speaker 5: to keep building and if we can, just the big 350 00:15:25,680 --> 00:15:27,880 Speaker 5: thing is just eliminate some of the zero negative runs. 351 00:15:27,880 --> 00:15:29,320 Speaker 5: So if we can kind of you next to the 352 00:15:29,360 --> 00:15:32,720 Speaker 5: next phase here, eliminate those and they just kind of 353 00:15:32,800 --> 00:15:34,760 Speaker 5: keep building. Three four yards of carry. It puts you 354 00:15:34,840 --> 00:15:37,240 Speaker 5: in second and seven, second and six, so you're not 355 00:15:37,240 --> 00:15:39,080 Speaker 5: in a situation. You know, you're a little bit behind 356 00:15:39,080 --> 00:15:40,120 Speaker 5: the sticks on the. 357 00:15:40,120 --> 00:15:40,880 Speaker 7: Other side of the ball. 358 00:15:41,000 --> 00:15:44,080 Speaker 2: Run defense Nick, obviously against the Colts struggled. There's some 359 00:15:44,120 --> 00:15:46,920 Speaker 2: tackling issues. We talked about that, but I feel like 360 00:15:46,920 --> 00:15:50,160 Speaker 2: there were two pieces that were added back after injury, 361 00:15:50,360 --> 00:15:52,280 Speaker 2: Blake Cashman and Jimmy Ward. And they weren't on the 362 00:15:52,280 --> 00:15:54,560 Speaker 2: field for every single play, but there were two vets 363 00:15:54,600 --> 00:15:56,360 Speaker 2: that seemed to kind of calm everything down and everybody 364 00:15:56,440 --> 00:15:57,800 Speaker 2: kind of raised the play too. How'd you kind of 365 00:15:57,800 --> 00:15:59,720 Speaker 2: look at the run defense and what kind of what 366 00:16:00,120 --> 00:16:01,880 Speaker 2: pack do those two bring to the run defense? 367 00:16:01,920 --> 00:16:04,280 Speaker 5: Also, Yeah, I think overall we were able to kind 368 00:16:04,320 --> 00:16:06,920 Speaker 5: of limit the explosives. Something we talked about before the game. 369 00:16:07,520 --> 00:16:09,520 Speaker 5: They pop a couple runs in there. So some of 370 00:16:09,520 --> 00:16:11,320 Speaker 5: it is just kind of fitting in the right tracking 371 00:16:11,360 --> 00:16:13,720 Speaker 5: angles and being in the right position, but by and 372 00:16:13,800 --> 00:16:15,080 Speaker 5: large we were in a better position. 373 00:16:15,600 --> 00:16:15,760 Speaker 3: You know. 374 00:16:15,800 --> 00:16:18,640 Speaker 5: Blake certainly made a positive impact on a game. I 375 00:16:18,640 --> 00:16:21,440 Speaker 5: think Jimmy made his presence felt not only on the field, 376 00:16:21,480 --> 00:16:23,280 Speaker 5: but off the field as well, with his leadership, with 377 00:16:23,320 --> 00:16:26,480 Speaker 5: his toughness, with his playing style. You know, just shot 378 00:16:26,520 --> 00:16:28,840 Speaker 5: we get Petrie back this week as well, so you know, 379 00:16:28,880 --> 00:16:31,600 Speaker 5: having guys like Peachery and Ward and cash Man and 380 00:16:31,640 --> 00:16:34,040 Speaker 5: you know Paraman. At some point we'll be back here. 381 00:16:34,120 --> 00:16:37,120 Speaker 5: So again, run defense is just about being disciplined. It's 382 00:16:37,120 --> 00:16:39,840 Speaker 5: about making sure that your gaps sound and taking care 383 00:16:39,840 --> 00:16:43,160 Speaker 5: of your responsibilities and being in position to make the 384 00:16:43,200 --> 00:16:45,080 Speaker 5: play and make the tackle and just don't give them 385 00:16:45,120 --> 00:16:45,920 Speaker 5: a lot of space. 386 00:16:46,720 --> 00:16:47,600 Speaker 6: That's the key. 387 00:16:48,000 --> 00:16:51,360 Speaker 4: It's Legends Homecoming presented by Ford. JJ Watt gets into 388 00:16:51,400 --> 00:16:53,600 Speaker 4: the Ring of Honor this weekend. Nick, give us a 389 00:16:53,720 --> 00:16:58,440 Speaker 4: JJ Watt prevailing memory thought when you first noticed him, 390 00:16:58,480 --> 00:17:00,440 Speaker 4: something that really stands out as I bring up the 391 00:17:00,480 --> 00:17:01,520 Speaker 4: name JJ Watt. 392 00:17:01,600 --> 00:17:04,200 Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean everything that JJ's received, he's earned, he's 393 00:17:04,200 --> 00:17:06,320 Speaker 5: gonna He's being recognized as one of the best players 394 00:17:06,359 --> 00:17:07,360 Speaker 5: in the history of the organization. 395 00:17:07,520 --> 00:17:07,920 Speaker 6: Rightfully. 396 00:17:07,960 --> 00:17:09,920 Speaker 5: So, I mean the impact that they had on the field, 397 00:17:10,080 --> 00:17:11,440 Speaker 5: you know, or off the field was almost as big 398 00:17:11,480 --> 00:17:13,720 Speaker 5: as the impact they had on the field. But there 399 00:17:13,800 --> 00:17:16,160 Speaker 5: was a stretch there, for that three or four year 400 00:17:16,240 --> 00:17:18,320 Speaker 5: stretch where I mean, I don't want to say he 401 00:17:18,359 --> 00:17:22,439 Speaker 5: was unblockable, but he was arguably unblockable. But I remember 402 00:17:22,440 --> 00:17:25,479 Speaker 5: we were actually playing you know, the Texans here, we 403 00:17:25,480 --> 00:17:29,000 Speaker 5: were running weak side zone play and we were running 404 00:17:29,080 --> 00:17:31,200 Speaker 5: away from him, and it was, well, we'll just run 405 00:17:31,200 --> 00:17:32,720 Speaker 5: away from him and you know we'll be able to 406 00:17:32,760 --> 00:17:34,679 Speaker 5: cut him off make the play. Well, he beats the 407 00:17:34,680 --> 00:17:38,320 Speaker 5: guard to the spot and where there's a massive crease, 408 00:17:38,720 --> 00:17:40,880 Speaker 5: but we could tackled in the backfield because I mean, 409 00:17:40,960 --> 00:17:43,959 Speaker 5: JJ made the play. So I think one of the 410 00:17:43,960 --> 00:17:45,840 Speaker 5: things that kind of gets lost with him, he was 411 00:17:45,880 --> 00:17:49,679 Speaker 5: a very instinctive, very aware player. He could obviously affect 412 00:17:49,720 --> 00:17:51,439 Speaker 5: a quarterback in a lot of different ways, but he 413 00:17:51,480 --> 00:17:54,040 Speaker 5: also knew if he couldn't get to the quarterback, he 414 00:17:54,160 --> 00:17:56,720 Speaker 5: had enough awareness to get himself in the passing lane. 415 00:17:57,040 --> 00:17:58,919 Speaker 5: So I don't know what the number is, but there 416 00:17:58,960 --> 00:18:01,120 Speaker 5: are probably too many defense of lineman and as many 417 00:18:01,160 --> 00:18:04,280 Speaker 5: batted balls or passes defense that he has over his career. 418 00:18:04,640 --> 00:18:06,960 Speaker 5: So I know we had the one play here, you know, 419 00:18:07,000 --> 00:18:09,320 Speaker 5: he tipped it up. It's a playoff game against Cincinnati 420 00:18:09,400 --> 00:18:11,159 Speaker 5: or whatever it was where he popping up in the 421 00:18:11,160 --> 00:18:13,200 Speaker 5: ear and return it for a touchdown. But I would 422 00:18:13,240 --> 00:18:17,359 Speaker 5: say the size, speed, strength, but his mental acuity and 423 00:18:17,440 --> 00:18:20,600 Speaker 5: his awareness and instinctiveness was as good as some of 424 00:18:20,600 --> 00:18:22,919 Speaker 5: the other physical attributes and qualities that he had. So 425 00:18:23,880 --> 00:18:25,960 Speaker 5: a credit to him, and you know, this is a 426 00:18:26,000 --> 00:18:29,199 Speaker 5: well deserved award and recognition, and I'm sure at some 427 00:18:29,280 --> 00:18:31,640 Speaker 5: point there'll be another, probably five years from now, another 428 00:18:31,680 --> 00:18:33,840 Speaker 5: opportunity for him to be recognized some capacity. 429 00:18:33,960 --> 00:18:35,439 Speaker 2: Nick, you know how I feel about it. I'd love 430 00:18:35,480 --> 00:18:38,199 Speaker 2: to ask about preparation. But when you're preparing for a 431 00:18:38,240 --> 00:18:42,359 Speaker 2: player like JJ, guy like Aaron Donald, how does it 432 00:18:42,440 --> 00:18:45,720 Speaker 2: impact the preparation knowing that, Look, if we're gonna do 433 00:18:45,800 --> 00:18:49,399 Speaker 2: anything today offensively, we can't let that guy beat us. 434 00:18:49,400 --> 00:18:50,880 Speaker 2: And I know it's a team game, like I get 435 00:18:50,920 --> 00:18:53,919 Speaker 2: all of that, but that guy can't beat us today. 436 00:18:53,920 --> 00:18:56,320 Speaker 2: How does it change the preparation as you're going through 437 00:18:56,440 --> 00:18:58,359 Speaker 2: preparing for a lot of Donald something like that. 438 00:18:58,440 --> 00:18:59,760 Speaker 5: Yeah, No, you have to talk about it. I mean 439 00:18:59,760 --> 00:19:03,439 Speaker 5: it's a very personnel driven league. Say, you know, not 440 00:19:03,560 --> 00:19:05,600 Speaker 5: too dissimilar. It's the same thing you're kind of going 441 00:19:05,600 --> 00:19:07,919 Speaker 5: through with TJ. But even though when you're playing against 442 00:19:07,920 --> 00:19:10,159 Speaker 5: those players, like everybody says that, everybody knows that, and 443 00:19:10,160 --> 00:19:12,440 Speaker 5: everybody talks about it, but you have to be very 444 00:19:12,480 --> 00:19:16,480 Speaker 5: hyper focused and diligent. Okay, this play, where is he? 445 00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:19,720 Speaker 5: How are we accounting for him? We think we're okay, 446 00:19:19,760 --> 00:19:22,280 Speaker 5: you think we're gonna be hold up, does this make sense? 447 00:19:22,520 --> 00:19:22,600 Speaker 1: So? 448 00:19:22,720 --> 00:19:23,600 Speaker 6: And how do you attack? 449 00:19:23,640 --> 00:19:26,760 Speaker 5: Every player has strengths, players have weaknesses, So you want 450 00:19:26,800 --> 00:19:28,639 Speaker 5: to try to take advantage if there's a weakness or 451 00:19:28,640 --> 00:19:31,120 Speaker 5: a way to kind of mitigate some of the things 452 00:19:31,160 --> 00:19:34,119 Speaker 5: that they do well. So you have to go into 453 00:19:34,480 --> 00:19:36,360 Speaker 5: I mean, it's the same thing on the defensive side 454 00:19:36,400 --> 00:19:38,480 Speaker 5: of the ball with the opposing offense. So if they 455 00:19:38,480 --> 00:19:41,119 Speaker 5: have a player he does this really really well, you 456 00:19:41,119 --> 00:19:43,280 Speaker 5: have to count for him, whether it's situationally, when it's 457 00:19:43,280 --> 00:19:44,199 Speaker 5: third down, whether it's in. 458 00:19:44,200 --> 00:19:44,720 Speaker 6: The red area. 459 00:19:44,880 --> 00:19:47,680 Speaker 5: So it's a part of your discussion during the course 460 00:19:47,720 --> 00:19:50,359 Speaker 5: of the week. In every situation, you just can't lose 461 00:19:50,400 --> 00:19:52,560 Speaker 5: sight of it because if that player has the capacity 462 00:19:52,600 --> 00:19:55,520 Speaker 5: to ruin the game, then it's on you to make 463 00:19:55,560 --> 00:19:57,600 Speaker 5: sure that it doesn't happen. And look, if he beats you, 464 00:19:57,600 --> 00:20:00,119 Speaker 5: he beats you, Like that's football. Sometimes you just going 465 00:20:00,160 --> 00:20:02,639 Speaker 5: to get beat by a better player. But okay, if 466 00:20:02,640 --> 00:20:04,040 Speaker 5: there are things that we can do in the interim 467 00:20:04,040 --> 00:20:06,280 Speaker 5: to make sure that doesn't happen, then we certainly have 468 00:20:06,320 --> 00:20:07,439 Speaker 5: to have a heighten awareness. 469 00:20:07,760 --> 00:20:11,400 Speaker 4: Nick growing up in Ohio, Texans are playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. 470 00:20:11,520 --> 00:20:14,920 Speaker 4: This is a traditional power. What was the level of 471 00:20:15,000 --> 00:20:19,800 Speaker 4: disdain in the Cassario household for the Pittsburgh Steelers. 472 00:20:19,880 --> 00:20:21,720 Speaker 6: I was probably too young. 473 00:20:21,960 --> 00:20:24,120 Speaker 5: The only thing I remember is just some of those 474 00:20:24,160 --> 00:20:28,360 Speaker 5: images of Jack Lambert and his teeth and black thereof 475 00:20:28,440 --> 00:20:30,840 Speaker 5: the physical nature I think, you know, me and Joe Green, 476 00:20:31,040 --> 00:20:33,600 Speaker 5: Jack Lambert, Like when you saw the highlights of the defense, 477 00:20:33,720 --> 00:20:35,439 Speaker 5: is just how physical they played. 478 00:20:36,160 --> 00:20:38,240 Speaker 6: I mean you're like, whoa, I mean, this is you know, 479 00:20:38,280 --> 00:20:39,200 Speaker 6: it's a violent sport. 480 00:20:39,240 --> 00:20:40,800 Speaker 5: You knew that, but they kind of took it to 481 00:20:41,400 --> 00:20:45,080 Speaker 5: next level and they built the reputation over time. I 482 00:20:45,080 --> 00:20:46,560 Speaker 5: mean you're talking about I mean, I don't know how 483 00:20:46,560 --> 00:20:47,879 Speaker 5: many players they have in the Hall of Fame, but 484 00:20:47,920 --> 00:20:50,960 Speaker 5: it's a lot. And they have I mean certain number 485 00:20:50,960 --> 00:20:54,359 Speaker 5: of championships as well. So but it just speaks to 486 00:20:54,440 --> 00:20:56,720 Speaker 5: the program and kind of how they built it, and 487 00:20:56,760 --> 00:20:58,240 Speaker 5: like I said in the beginning, just the model of 488 00:20:58,240 --> 00:21:00,680 Speaker 5: the consistency that they've established, I mean, second to none, 489 00:21:00,720 --> 00:21:04,320 Speaker 5: And honestly, it's something that you aspire to at some 490 00:21:04,440 --> 00:21:07,639 Speaker 5: point potentially be in that same vein Like we're not 491 00:21:07,640 --> 00:21:10,000 Speaker 5: gonna be the Pittsburgh Steelers, but when you look at 492 00:21:10,040 --> 00:21:13,160 Speaker 5: what they've done, you tip your hat and it's respect 493 00:21:13,200 --> 00:21:15,600 Speaker 5: and its admiration, but we also know we still have 494 00:21:15,640 --> 00:21:16,840 Speaker 5: a job to do and just go out there and 495 00:21:16,880 --> 00:21:19,000 Speaker 5: play and execute, and you know, we'll see what happens 496 00:21:19,040 --> 00:21:19,760 Speaker 5: at the end of the game. 497 00:21:19,840 --> 00:21:23,919 Speaker 2: I know all NFL games, they all count, they all matter, 498 00:21:24,560 --> 00:21:26,560 Speaker 2: But to your point and the respect you have for 499 00:21:26,600 --> 00:21:28,919 Speaker 2: the Steelers, does it mean something. We know 581 00:24:38,680 --> 00:24:40,879 Speaker 8: you're from Florida. I actually speaking of Houston. So you 582 00:24:40,880 --> 00:24:43,680 Speaker 8: have to Beyonce concert? Yes, okay, so 590 00:25:02,920 --> 00:25:06,960 Speaker 8: you're not like an official like fan of I. 591 00:25:06,920 --> 00:25:10,000 Speaker 9: Love music, but the concert is not really my thing. 592 00:25:10,200 --> 00:25:12,879 Speaker 8: Okay, yeah, okay, So you stayed for about twenty minutes 593 00:25:12,920 --> 00:25:16,000 Speaker 8: and then you dipped you and CJ. You guys also 594 00:25:16,080 --> 00:25:18,200 Speaker 8: went back for the first Cougars game right this season, 595 00:25:18,800 --> 00:25:20,560 Speaker 8: first football game? Okay? Was that that was probably, I 596 00:25:20,600 --> 00:25:22,280 Speaker 8: assume the first time he ever. 597 00:25:22,880 --> 00:25:25,800 Speaker 9: Yeah, he kind of dissing on us, like, oh he 598 00:25:25,960 --> 00:25:28,959 Speaker 9: was he wasn't. He loved it though, but he was like, 599 00:25:29,119 --> 00:25:31,840 Speaker 9: he's gonna take me to the Ohio State game week. 600 00:25:32,160 --> 00:25:35,199 Speaker 9: Okay they play, I don't know who they play, but 601 00:25:35,320 --> 00:25:36,640 Speaker 9: he said he was gonna take me there and I'm 602 00:25:36,640 --> 00:25:38,760 Speaker 9: gonna see the atmosphere and stuff like that. He was like, you, 603 00:25:38,880 --> 00:25:40,280 Speaker 9: I'm gonna show you a real at mess. 604 00:25:40,320 --> 00:25:43,120 Speaker 8: Oh really okay, okay, he's gonna show you no higher 605 00:25:43,160 --> 00:25:43,520 Speaker 8: state game. 606 00:25:43,600 --> 00:25:44,679 Speaker 10: Yeah, so I'm waiting on it. 607 00:25:44,880 --> 00:25:46,640 Speaker 8: You guys are so close. It seems like you guys 608 00:25:46,680 --> 00:25:49,000 Speaker 8: do a lot of stuff off the field together. I mean, 609 00:25:49,119 --> 00:25:52,439 Speaker 8: is that just from being two rookies together or just 610 00:25:52,480 --> 00:25:55,000 Speaker 8: because of the positions, like what's what's your relationship like 611 00:25:55,000 --> 00:25:55,520 Speaker 8: off I just I. 612 00:25:55,520 --> 00:25:57,919 Speaker 9: Feel like we just connect well with each other. He 613 00:25:58,040 --> 00:26:01,320 Speaker 9: understands me as like outside of the ball, like just 614 00:26:01,359 --> 00:26:03,439 Speaker 9: as a human being, as a person, and then I 615 00:26:03,520 --> 00:26:06,320 Speaker 9: understand him like man, we'd be having some deep conversations 616 00:26:06,320 --> 00:26:08,960 Speaker 9: and things like that. And then on the field, you know, 617 00:26:09,040 --> 00:26:11,720 Speaker 9: like we connect like for like we like the best 618 00:26:11,720 --> 00:26:13,439 Speaker 9: of friends when we're on the field. So it's just 619 00:26:13,480 --> 00:26:15,560 Speaker 9: like that, man, we just connect well with each other. 620 00:26:15,920 --> 00:26:18,320 Speaker 8: It's very similar in your personalities. Are you different? 621 00:26:18,400 --> 00:26:20,840 Speaker 10: Yeah, we're similar, he like in one way. He joked 622 00:26:20,840 --> 00:26:22,880 Speaker 10: all day he does, and I joke. 623 00:26:22,760 --> 00:26:25,240 Speaker 8: Back, you know, I can. I feel like you're very 624 00:26:25,320 --> 00:26:27,200 Speaker 8: like out there, he's more of a quarterback. We sed 625 00:26:27,240 --> 00:26:28,440 Speaker 8: mae the more serious sight of him. 626 00:26:28,840 --> 00:26:30,719 Speaker 9: Yeah, when we're in the building, But when we're outside 627 00:26:30,760 --> 00:26:34,399 Speaker 9: the building, man, that man is a comedian, even in 628 00:26:34,440 --> 00:26:36,720 Speaker 9: the locker room, Like people don't see the locker room CJ. 629 00:26:37,200 --> 00:26:37,440 Speaker 10: First. 630 00:26:37,440 --> 00:26:39,320 Speaker 9: He's a man of God for sure, like faith and 631 00:26:39,359 --> 00:26:39,600 Speaker 9: all that. 632 00:26:39,800 --> 00:26:40,680 Speaker 8: I can see that for sure. 633 00:26:40,760 --> 00:26:41,680 Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, for sure. 634 00:26:41,920 --> 00:26:45,000 Speaker 9: But he has his moments when he's going to like 635 00:26:45,200 --> 00:26:47,640 Speaker 9: crack all day but it's fun though. 636 00:26:48,119 --> 00:26:50,000 Speaker 8: One of the first stories we heard about you, obviously 637 00:26:50,040 --> 00:26:52,879 Speaker 8: when you got drafted was that you DM the Texans 638 00:26:53,119 --> 00:26:57,200 Speaker 8: what last December, and then the Texans drafted CJ Day one, 639 00:26:57,560 --> 00:27:00,560 Speaker 8: But that CJ was really lobbying for the Texans draft you, 640 00:27:00,840 --> 00:27:03,760 Speaker 8: like all of Houston wanted you here. I felt like, so, 641 00:27:03,800 --> 00:27:06,960 Speaker 8: how was that possible for that him wanting to have 642 00:27:07,000 --> 00:27:08,960 Speaker 8: you here? Did you know him that well before you 643 00:27:09,000 --> 00:27:10,439 Speaker 8: guys were on this team together. 644 00:27:10,800 --> 00:27:13,560 Speaker 9: I knew, Yeah, I didn't know him like personally, but 645 00:27:13,640 --> 00:27:17,359 Speaker 9: I knew like from me watching football and sports and 646 00:27:17,359 --> 00:27:19,360 Speaker 9: stuff like that, Like I knew he was a great 647 00:27:19,440 --> 00:27:22,680 Speaker 9: quarterback at Ohio State. And then we did actually meet 648 00:27:22,720 --> 00:27:24,880 Speaker 9: at the combine. So when we met at the combine, 649 00:27:24,880 --> 00:27:27,200 Speaker 9: we chopped it up for a little minute, and you did. Yeah, 650 00:27:27,240 --> 00:27:28,880 Speaker 9: we met at the combine and we was just like 651 00:27:29,400 --> 00:27:30,960 Speaker 9: he was just he came up and we was just 652 00:27:30,960 --> 00:27:31,840 Speaker 9: talking about ball and. 653 00:27:31,760 --> 00:27:33,600 Speaker 10: Stuff like that. He just like, I love your game. 654 00:27:34,119 --> 00:27:36,640 Speaker 9: I told him the same thing, and then kept talking 655 00:27:36,680 --> 00:27:38,840 Speaker 9: about other stuff and then you know, we're here now. 656 00:27:38,920 --> 00:27:42,119 Speaker 8: So yeah, it seems like he's very approachable considering he 657 00:27:42,160 --> 00:27:45,120 Speaker 8: played at such a high level. Yeah, yeah, he would agree. 658 00:27:45,160 --> 00:27:45,600 Speaker 10: With that. 659 00:27:45,640 --> 00:27:47,880 Speaker 9: When I first spoke with him, like he very genuine, 660 00:27:48,359 --> 00:27:50,320 Speaker 9: you know, like we sat there for like a good 661 00:27:50,400 --> 00:27:52,960 Speaker 9: five to ten minutes talking, chopping it up about stuff, 662 00:27:53,000 --> 00:27:55,720 Speaker 9: and then no, God blessed us to be. 663 00:27:55,680 --> 00:27:56,040 Speaker 10: With each other. 664 00:27:56,119 --> 00:27:57,960 Speaker 8: So yeah, obviously he wanted you here. Are you surprised by the 668 00:28:06,880 --> 00:28:07,640 Speaker 8: start that you've had. 669 00:28:08,200 --> 00:28:11,080 Speaker 9: Nah, Never, I put the work in. You know, I'm 670 00:28:11,160 --> 00:28:13,320 Speaker 9: very confident in myself. You know, playing this sport, you 671 00:28:13,320 --> 00:28:16,960 Speaker 9: gotta have confidence. So every time I step on the field, 672 00:28:16,960 --> 00:28:18,399 Speaker 9: I want to be you know, I want to be 673 00:28:18,400 --> 00:28:19,800 Speaker 9: one of the best. You know, I'm gonna give it 674 00:28:19,840 --> 00:28:23,400 Speaker 9: everything I got for sure for my team, myself and 675 00:28:23,440 --> 00:28:25,520 Speaker 9: not just my confidence through the roof man. So I 676 00:28:25,520 --> 00:28:27,639 Speaker 9: feel like I done been through it all, So just 677 00:28:27,680 --> 00:28:29,439 Speaker 9: go out there with put my best foot forward, and 678 00:28:29,480 --> 00:28:33,359 Speaker 9: you know, whatever happens happens. But I felt the game coming, 679 00:28:33,600 --> 00:28:35,240 Speaker 9: you know, I didn't know it was gonna come early 680 00:28:35,320 --> 00:28:35,520 Speaker 9: like this. 681 00:28:35,720 --> 00:28:37,320 Speaker 8: Oh you felt like a big game was coming for you? 682 00:28:37,480 --> 00:28:38,040 Speaker 10: Yeah, for sure. 683 00:28:38,520 --> 00:28:40,920 Speaker 9: Just I feel like, you know, want you to put 684 00:28:40,920 --> 00:28:43,360 Speaker 9: that hard work in throughout the year, throughout the season, 685 00:28:44,400 --> 00:28:48,400 Speaker 9: before the season, doing the training and all that. Once 686 00:28:48,440 --> 00:28:51,560 Speaker 9: you put the work in, you know, God just blessings coming, 687 00:28:51,600 --> 00:28:53,440 Speaker 9: you know. So I knew it was gonna come. I 688 00:28:53,520 --> 00:28:55,960 Speaker 9: just didn't know desert early, but thank God. 689 00:28:56,240 --> 00:28:57,960 Speaker 8: I mean, you seem to always get open, You seem 690 00:28:58,000 --> 00:29:00,640 Speaker 8: to always make those big plays. But do you think 691 00:29:00,720 --> 00:29:04,880 Speaker 8: separates your game from like other receivers out there? What 692 00:29:05,000 --> 00:29:05,880 Speaker 8: makes you so different? 693 00:29:06,680 --> 00:29:06,920 Speaker 3: Man? 694 00:29:06,960 --> 00:29:07,320 Speaker 10: I don't know. 695 00:29:07,360 --> 00:29:10,040 Speaker 9: It's a lot of great receivers, but I do know, 696 00:29:10,160 --> 00:29:12,320 Speaker 9: like within myself, I know how to get open, just 697 00:29:12,600 --> 00:29:15,720 Speaker 9: the nag of getting open, being a separator route runner, 698 00:29:15,800 --> 00:29:18,320 Speaker 9: cause you know I don't have I'm not I'm not 699 00:29:18,360 --> 00:29:20,440 Speaker 9: the biggest guy. So I get open and other ways 700 00:29:20,480 --> 00:29:22,680 Speaker 9: like I got to speed, you know. I know how 701 00:29:22,680 --> 00:29:25,760 Speaker 9: to stop on a dime and getting and out my cuts, 702 00:29:25,800 --> 00:29:29,479 Speaker 9: So I rely on that for sure. But just catching 703 00:29:29,480 --> 00:29:32,640 Speaker 9: the ball, like staying after practice catching the ball, running routes, 704 00:29:32,840 --> 00:29:34,720 Speaker 9: just keep even if the route. If I know I 705 00:29:34,720 --> 00:29:36,720 Speaker 9: can run this route in my sleep, I'm just gonna 706 00:29:36,800 --> 00:29:39,160 Speaker 9: keep drilling it. So once the game they come, you know, 707 00:29:39,240 --> 00:29:41,360 Speaker 9: it just be like just me out there having fun. 708 00:29:41,440 --> 00:29:42,440 Speaker 10: So that's how I do it. 709 00:29:42,560 --> 00:29:45,000 Speaker 8: Your your journey is one that's so interesting because you 710 00:29:45,000 --> 00:29:48,440 Speaker 8: started off at Juco Junior Community College and then you 711 00:29:48,760 --> 00:29:51,360 Speaker 8: started a few different places before you actually made a Houston. 712 00:29:52,320 --> 00:29:54,120 Speaker 10: I started it in the HBCU level. 713 00:29:54,200 --> 00:29:56,719 Speaker 9: So I started at Alabama and m then I win 714 00:29:56,840 --> 00:29:59,160 Speaker 9: Juco after like my I stayed there through the summer 715 00:29:59,160 --> 00:30:01,120 Speaker 9: workouts in the first semester, and then after that I 716 00:30:01,160 --> 00:30:03,120 Speaker 9: went to Jugo. Okay, so to spring semester. 717 00:30:03,600 --> 00:30:05,320 Speaker 8: Why was that throughoute that you had to take out 718 00:30:05,320 --> 00:30:07,560 Speaker 8: of high school? Were you not able to go to 719 00:30:07,600 --> 00:30:10,240 Speaker 8: another school? Did you want to start at an HBCU 720 00:30:10,360 --> 00:30:12,200 Speaker 8: and why were you why did you change? 721 00:30:12,520 --> 00:30:15,120 Speaker 9: I wanted to start at the biggest level you did, Okay, 722 00:30:15,280 --> 00:30:18,800 Speaker 9: I just didn't have the opportunities, you know, coming out 723 00:30:18,800 --> 00:30:22,600 Speaker 9: of high school. I had one offer from FIU that story. 724 00:30:22,640 --> 00:30:25,360 Speaker 9: Everybody know that story. Took my offer stuff like that. 725 00:30:26,080 --> 00:30:27,880 Speaker 9: My best friend, his dad was a running back coach 726 00:30:27,880 --> 00:30:30,480 Speaker 9: at Alabama, and he blessed me with the opportunity to 727 00:30:30,480 --> 00:30:33,040 Speaker 9: get the offer of scholarship from them. Went there and 728 00:30:33,080 --> 00:30:34,760 Speaker 9: then I just bettered on myself after that. 729 00:30:34,880 --> 00:30:37,480 Speaker 8: So okay, So at what point, like I would think 730 00:30:37,480 --> 00:30:39,360 Speaker 8: that if you go through all that, you think this 731 00:30:39,440 --> 00:30:41,479 Speaker 8: is really tough. Like I didn't get a lot of offers. 732 00:30:41,520 --> 00:30:43,360 Speaker 8: I got to go through all these different avenues to 733 00:30:43,360 --> 00:30:45,680 Speaker 8: make it. Did you ever feel like maybe the NFL 734 00:30:45,720 --> 00:30:47,600 Speaker 8: thing isn't gonna happen or did you always feel like 735 00:30:47,640 --> 00:30:49,080 Speaker 8: that was going to be in the cards for you? 736 00:30:49,320 --> 00:30:50,040 Speaker 10: I was out out. 737 00:30:50,160 --> 00:30:52,280 Speaker 9: You always knew, yeah, I was gonna get here. You 738 00:30:52,320 --> 00:30:54,720 Speaker 9: did one way or another. I felt like I was 739 00:30:54,720 --> 00:30:55,360 Speaker 9: gonna get there. 740 00:30:55,400 --> 00:30:55,560 Speaker 1: You know. 741 00:30:55,840 --> 00:30:59,040 Speaker 9: It was times where I did doubt myself, like because 742 00:30:59,160 --> 00:31:00,480 Speaker 9: it was a lot of stuff I ain't gonna li 743 00:31:00,480 --> 00:31:02,400 Speaker 9: likee going JUCO then not have on really too many 744 00:31:02,400 --> 00:31:04,200 Speaker 9: offers of coming out of Juco and stuff like that. 745 00:31:04,240 --> 00:31:06,360 Speaker 9: But once I did get the opportunity to go to Houston, 746 00:31:06,400 --> 00:31:07,720 Speaker 9: I knew, like all I had to do was just 747 00:31:07,760 --> 00:31:10,440 Speaker 9: work hard, you know, work hard and put it out 748 00:31:10,640 --> 00:31:14,320 Speaker 9: on displayment on Saturdays and I would have the opportunity, 749 00:31:14,480 --> 00:31:16,840 Speaker 9: you know. So that was my mindset once I did 750 00:31:16,880 --> 00:31:19,160 Speaker 9: get there. But in JUCO, it was it was a 751 00:31:19,200 --> 00:31:19,920 Speaker 9: little rough role. 752 00:31:20,000 --> 00:31:21,880 Speaker 8: But I feel like the guys that go to JUCO 753 00:31:21,920 --> 00:31:24,120 Speaker 8: and then make it to the collegiate level there so 754 00:31:24,680 --> 00:31:26,880 Speaker 8: they're they're just different I think it's just different because 755 00:31:26,880 --> 00:31:28,600 Speaker 8: you had you had to work so hard to even 756 00:31:28,600 --> 00:31:30,920 Speaker 8: get to that college level. That might have come a 757 00:31:30,920 --> 00:31:34,320 Speaker 8: lot easier for some other guys. All right, so you 758 00:31:34,320 --> 00:31:37,200 Speaker 8: you were a Necklaces's flash that's your nickname Flash. But 759 00:31:37,200 --> 00:31:39,719 Speaker 8: I feel like you you are flashy, but yet you 760 00:31:39,760 --> 00:31:42,479 Speaker 8: work really hard and obviously you had to work really 761 00:31:42,520 --> 00:31:44,400 Speaker 8: hard to get to this point. What do you like 762 00:31:44,440 --> 00:31:46,640 Speaker 8: off the field? I've seen your Instagram. I think everybody's 763 00:31:46,640 --> 00:31:49,160 Speaker 8: seen your Instagram. You like the fashion, you like the drip. 764 00:31:49,200 --> 00:31:53,400 Speaker 8: What's what's your whole vibe like? Outside of sports field? 765 00:31:54,400 --> 00:31:57,280 Speaker 9: Won't being completely honest, Like, especially during season, I don't 766 00:31:57,280 --> 00:31:59,480 Speaker 9: do nothing. I'd probably go home and play on call 767 00:31:59,520 --> 00:32:00,480 Speaker 9: of duty day. 768 00:32:00,440 --> 00:32:04,000 Speaker 8: Call of duty, Okay, not like I get home. Are 769 00:32:04,000 --> 00:32:05,400 Speaker 8: you playing with teammates or you're just like. 770 00:32:05,320 --> 00:32:07,080 Speaker 9: I'm playing, well some of my friends back home. 771 00:32:07,160 --> 00:32:08,480 Speaker 8: Okay, Okay, I go home. 772 00:32:08,520 --> 00:32:10,600 Speaker 9: That's how I like connect, like stay in touch with 773 00:32:10,640 --> 00:32:13,200 Speaker 9: my boys back home. Okay, just get on the game 774 00:32:13,360 --> 00:32:16,080 Speaker 9: after you know, it's season, so of course film and 775 00:32:16,120 --> 00:32:18,320 Speaker 9: all that, but yeah, you know, in my free time, 776 00:32:18,360 --> 00:32:20,000 Speaker 9: when I want some downtime, I get on the game 777 00:32:20,040 --> 00:32:20,760 Speaker 9: and I just sit. 778 00:32:20,560 --> 00:32:22,040 Speaker 10: There all day and play the game, okay. 779 00:32:22,160 --> 00:32:25,400 Speaker 9: And then other than that, you know, just food spots 780 00:32:25,440 --> 00:32:28,000 Speaker 9: down here in Houston. So it's good. And 888 00:36:19,560 --> 00:36:21,359 Speaker 1: now we're just getting ready for j. J. Watt Meek. 889 00:36:21,960 --> 00:36:23,680 Speaker 11: I love it, I love it, I love it. Okay, 890 00:36:23,719 --> 00:36:26,640 Speaker 11: Here on today's show, this is what we got. Johnny 891 00:36:26,640 --> 00:36:29,680 Speaker 11: and I are gonna chit chat about an under the 892 00:36:29,760 --> 00:36:34,000 Speaker 11: radar player to watch against the Steelers. We're also going 893 00:36:34,080 --> 00:36:38,000 Speaker 11: to get into some wild JJ Watt memories because hey, 894 00:36:38,080 --> 00:36:40,400 Speaker 11: he's going into the Ring of Honor this weekend. 895 00:36:40,680 --> 00:36:43,640 Speaker 6: Plus, I'm gonna give you some fun. 896 00:36:43,400 --> 00:36:49,960 Speaker 11: Off the field interview selections from Motor Devin Singletary. He 897 00:36:50,000 --> 00:36:51,879 Speaker 11: had his mom, he had his sister there in the crowd, 898 00:36:52,000 --> 00:36:54,319 Speaker 11: Yellow Motor, and he had some big runs at the 899 00:36:54,400 --> 00:36:56,720 Speaker 11: end of Sunday's game. He also had some nice blocks 900 00:36:56,760 --> 00:37:02,160 Speaker 11: as well. Plus Chris My, not the former Texan center, 901 00:37:02,480 --> 00:37:05,680 Speaker 11: but the guy who called the last two Texans games 902 00:37:05,680 --> 00:37:08,240 Speaker 11: play by play wise last week. 903 00:37:08,080 --> 00:37:08,760 Speaker 6: And the week before. 904 00:37:09,520 --> 00:37:12,839 Speaker 11: He is a giant in the industry, and I got 905 00:37:12,880 --> 00:37:16,960 Speaker 11: a chance to talk sports broadcasting with him about his career. 906 00:37:17,320 --> 00:37:19,960 Speaker 11: You know, earlier I had talked about the matchup, but 907 00:37:20,080 --> 00:37:22,640 Speaker 11: that is in the rear view, so we're not gonna 908 00:37:22,640 --> 00:37:24,960 Speaker 11: air that portion. We're gonna air this stuff, the good stuff, 909 00:37:25,360 --> 00:37:27,000 Speaker 11: and have some fun with Chris. He was a real 910 00:37:27,080 --> 00:37:28,880 Speaker 11: good sport and it was fun actually seeing him at 911 00:37:28,880 --> 00:37:30,759 Speaker 11: the game Sunday up in the press box and chit 912 00:37:30,880 --> 00:37:33,879 Speaker 11: chatting with him before before the thing's kicked off. But John, 913 00:37:34,080 --> 00:37:37,919 Speaker 11: let's get into it against the Steelers this Sunday. You're 914 00:37:38,120 --> 00:37:41,479 Speaker 11: under the radar Texan to watch is. 915 00:37:43,239 --> 00:37:45,160 Speaker 1: Oh boy, I'm gonna go with Steven Nelson. 916 00:37:45,520 --> 00:37:48,400 Speaker 2: And the reason I'm going with Steven Nelson I think 917 00:37:49,320 --> 00:37:51,759 Speaker 2: since Steven Nelson has gotten here in twenty twenty two. 918 00:37:51,800 --> 00:37:55,840 Speaker 2: And I remember when Nelson signed, there was some noise, 919 00:37:55,960 --> 00:37:57,880 Speaker 2: especially from people in Kansas City. 920 00:37:57,760 --> 00:37:59,560 Speaker 1: Like oh oh, oh my. 921 00:37:59,680 --> 00:38:01,719 Speaker 2: God, he's a holding kind of the way to happen. 922 00:38:01,800 --> 00:38:05,879 Speaker 2: He's this, He's that man. Steven Nelson couldn't be more 923 00:38:05,920 --> 00:38:06,800 Speaker 2: further from. 924 00:38:06,640 --> 00:38:08,520 Speaker 1: What he was early in his career. 925 00:38:08,719 --> 00:38:13,640 Speaker 2: He has been absolutely brilliant for this Texans team. And 926 00:38:13,680 --> 00:38:15,840 Speaker 2: I know there was some of that noise in the offseason, 927 00:38:16,000 --> 00:38:18,279 Speaker 2: you know about a contract and we come back and 928 00:38:18,280 --> 00:38:20,520 Speaker 2: all that. Well, he got that contract thing worked out 929 00:38:20,560 --> 00:38:22,640 Speaker 2: and he left it all behind. He became a captain 930 00:38:23,280 --> 00:38:27,839 Speaker 2: and has played the lights out. Now it's the Steelers offensively, 931 00:38:28,000 --> 00:38:29,880 Speaker 2: I don't know if there's any one thing they do 932 00:38:30,000 --> 00:38:33,479 Speaker 2: exceptionally well, but they have an exceptional talent at wide 933 00:38:33,560 --> 00:38:37,920 Speaker 2: receiver and that's George Pickens, and that's probably a matchup 934 00:38:37,920 --> 00:38:40,600 Speaker 2: that Steven's going to get a decent majority of the game. 935 00:38:40,800 --> 00:38:43,719 Speaker 2: And the way he has played, I'm very confident that 936 00:38:43,760 --> 00:38:46,520 Speaker 2: Steven Nelson is going to step up to the challenge. 937 00:38:46,520 --> 00:38:49,320 Speaker 2: He has never He's never shrunk him from a challenge. 938 00:38:49,320 --> 00:38:51,520 Speaker 2: He plays with an edge. I love the way that 939 00:38:51,600 --> 00:38:54,239 Speaker 2: he plays. He's been a good leader for this team. 940 00:38:54,280 --> 00:38:56,360 Speaker 2: He's been a leader for a secondary that was for 941 00:38:56,440 --> 00:38:59,359 Speaker 2: a time without Jalen Petrie, for a time without Jimmy Ward, 942 00:38:59,400 --> 00:39:01,480 Speaker 2: and now for all a lot of time without Derek Stingley, 943 00:39:01,719 --> 00:39:04,399 Speaker 2: and Steven Nelson has been the consistent one back there 944 00:39:04,760 --> 00:39:08,520 Speaker 2: and his play has gotten better. It's not a sign curve. 945 00:39:08,560 --> 00:39:10,560 Speaker 2: It's not up and down and up and down. It's 946 00:39:10,600 --> 00:39:14,680 Speaker 2: a linear progression with a positive slope. More why more 947 00:39:14,760 --> 00:39:17,440 Speaker 2: changing why There is changing X and that's a good 948 00:39:17,520 --> 00:39:20,719 Speaker 2: thing when you're a corner, So you know, the more 949 00:39:20,840 --> 00:39:23,480 Speaker 2: math we can bring to in the lab, Drew the 950 00:39:23,520 --> 00:39:25,279 Speaker 2: better off because that just lets his geek out. But 951 00:39:25,280 --> 00:39:28,480 Speaker 2: I think Steven Nelson has been exceptional for this team, 952 00:39:28,520 --> 00:39:29,840 Speaker 2: and I think he's gonna play a big role against 953 00:39:29,840 --> 00:39:30,720 Speaker 2: the Steelers on Sunday. 954 00:39:31,200 --> 00:39:31,719 Speaker 3: I like that. 955 00:39:31,719 --> 00:39:35,680 Speaker 11: That's a great choice. Think about what has happened for 956 00:39:35,760 --> 00:39:38,880 Speaker 11: the Texans this season. In the first week, they allowed 957 00:39:38,960 --> 00:39:42,879 Speaker 11: a seventy eight yard receiver in Zay Flowers. That's it's 958 00:39:42,880 --> 00:39:45,040 Speaker 11: pretty good, but that's the most that anyone got, seventy 959 00:39:45,040 --> 00:39:47,560 Speaker 11: eight yards. And then there's some thirty yard receivers as 960 00:39:47,600 --> 00:39:51,239 Speaker 11: well against the Colts the next week, Week two. Now, 961 00:39:51,560 --> 00:39:53,120 Speaker 11: I know the first week was a loss. I know 962 00:39:53,200 --> 00:39:56,560 Speaker 11: the second week was not the best effort defensively from 963 00:39:56,640 --> 00:40:01,719 Speaker 11: this team. But you had an eighty eight rushing day 964 00:40:02,280 --> 00:40:06,000 Speaker 11: by Zack Moss. But over on the receiving side, most 965 00:40:06,000 --> 00:40:10,160 Speaker 11: anybody got was fifty six yards. That's Michael Pittman eight catches. 966 00:40:10,440 --> 00:40:13,200 Speaker 11: Took him eight catches to get fifty six yards. Okay. 967 00:40:13,600 --> 00:40:17,080 Speaker 11: And then what did we see Trevor Lawrence and company 968 00:40:17,120 --> 00:40:23,160 Speaker 11: do on Sunday in Jacksonville? Okay, leading receiver he got. 969 00:40:23,880 --> 00:40:28,080 Speaker 11: Let's look through the receiving yardage chart, not a whole 970 00:40:28,280 --> 00:40:31,200 Speaker 11: heck of a lot. Sixty seven yards by Evan Ingram. 971 00:40:31,200 --> 00:40:34,319 Speaker 11: That's a tight end. These guys have been doing a 972 00:40:34,320 --> 00:40:37,719 Speaker 11: great job, and he's the main reason why it was 973 00:40:37,760 --> 00:40:40,840 Speaker 11: funny after that win in Jacksonville, one of the equipment 974 00:40:40,840 --> 00:40:44,520 Speaker 11: guys for the Texans, as Nelson was walking out, was saying, 975 00:40:44,719 --> 00:40:45,160 Speaker 11: y'all know the. 976 00:40:45,160 --> 00:40:48,200 Speaker 1: New nickname for Steven Nelson. It's seat belts. 977 00:40:48,719 --> 00:40:50,520 Speaker 3: Yeah, you just locking people up. 978 00:40:50,800 --> 00:40:53,239 Speaker 11: So that was kind of fun to hear. I like 979 00:40:53,280 --> 00:40:56,160 Speaker 11: your choice of Steven Nelson. I'll go with Shaq Griffin. 980 00:40:56,600 --> 00:40:59,640 Speaker 11: You know, he had a big return to Jacksonville last weekend. 981 00:40:59,640 --> 00:41:02,040 Speaker 11: He's got to be called upon. He started, He's gonna 982 00:41:02,040 --> 00:41:04,160 Speaker 11: be called upon him sure again to start this week 983 00:41:04,200 --> 00:41:08,840 Speaker 11: against the Steelers. So I'm gonna answer your Nelson with 984 00:41:08,920 --> 00:41:11,880 Speaker 11: Shaq Griffin. Let's see what he does. He's my under 985 00:41:11,880 --> 00:41:15,560 Speaker 11: the radar guy, because could you imagine if one of 986 00:41:15,640 --> 00:41:17,600 Speaker 11: us had picked Andrew Beck last week as our under 987 00:41:17,719 --> 00:41:18,200 Speaker 11: under the ball. 988 00:41:19,840 --> 00:41:21,160 Speaker 1: Can I tell you this quick story. 989 00:41:21,480 --> 00:41:22,120 Speaker 3: I'd love it. 990 00:41:23,000 --> 00:41:25,000 Speaker 1: I always love we always love story. Timon in the lab. 991 00:41:25,120 --> 00:41:29,160 Speaker 2: So the Jaguar score to make it seventeen ten, it's 992 00:41:29,200 --> 00:41:31,880 Speaker 2: kind of feeling a little diceier now, like we have 993 00:41:31,960 --> 00:41:34,640 Speaker 2: this seventeen leading out seventeen ten, and in my mind, 994 00:41:34,680 --> 00:41:36,120 Speaker 2: I'm thinking, man, we've. 995 00:41:36,000 --> 00:41:38,120 Speaker 1: Got we need to score in the in the worst 996 00:41:38,120 --> 00:41:39,719 Speaker 1: way we need. I don't care what it is. 997 00:41:40,040 --> 00:41:42,560 Speaker 2: There were like four minutes and thirty seconds left in 998 00:41:42,600 --> 00:41:44,560 Speaker 2: the third quarter, and I just wanted to get to 999 00:41:44,600 --> 00:41:46,080 Speaker 2: the fourth quarter with the lead and see what you 1000 00:41:46,120 --> 00:41:46,440 Speaker 2: can do. 1001 00:41:46,480 --> 00:41:47,239 Speaker 1: But we need a point. 1002 00:41:47,280 --> 00:41:49,640 Speaker 2: So right before the kickoff, Mark threw it down to 1003 00:41:49,680 --> 00:41:53,399 Speaker 2: me and I said, look, guys, I don't care how 1004 00:41:53,440 --> 00:41:56,400 Speaker 2: the Texans score. I don't care if it's uh and 1005 00:41:56,520 --> 00:41:59,040 Speaker 2: I pulled this one out of my backside. I don't 1006 00:41:59,080 --> 00:42:03,880 Speaker 2: care if it's a ninety five yards throwback to an 1007 00:42:03,880 --> 00:42:06,960 Speaker 2: eligible tackle. George Fan, he goes ninety five yards for 1008 00:42:06,960 --> 00:42:09,760 Speaker 2: a touchdown, I don't care. But they've got a score, 1009 00:42:09,840 --> 00:42:13,360 Speaker 2: no matter how improbable it might be. And I literally 1010 00:42:13,400 --> 00:42:16,040 Speaker 2: said that, and not thirty seconds later, Andrew Beck is 1011 00:42:16,120 --> 00:42:19,200 Speaker 2: running back at kick return and I was kind of 1012 00:42:19,200 --> 00:42:20,520 Speaker 2: screaming and yelling at the tugs. 1013 00:42:20,560 --> 00:42:22,719 Speaker 1: Was excited with scored, but it was like I told you, 1014 00:42:22,760 --> 00:42:23,840 Speaker 1: it was gonna be improbable. 1015 00:42:23,880 --> 00:42:26,440 Speaker 2: I told you, And that was about as improbable as 1016 00:42:26,480 --> 00:42:28,839 Speaker 2: a god. So no offense, Big George, because Big George 1017 00:42:28,880 --> 00:42:31,000 Speaker 2: Fan played a big a good game. But you know, 1018 00:42:31,040 --> 00:42:33,640 Speaker 2: the ninety five yard throwback screen at George Fant was 1019 00:42:33,640 --> 00:42:36,759 Speaker 2: probably not in Bobby Slowan's playbook, but I wanted to 1020 00:42:36,800 --> 00:42:40,400 Speaker 2: point out the improbability. I didn't care, and that was 1021 00:42:40,440 --> 00:42:42,759 Speaker 2: about as improbable as a god. So that was that 1022 00:42:42,800 --> 00:42:44,480 Speaker 2: was huge to get that one on that kick return. 1023 00:42:45,120 --> 00:42:47,880 Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, the Texans sideline would have been celebrating 1024 00:42:47,920 --> 00:42:52,120 Speaker 11: had anyone returned to kickoff first score. Yeah, but when 1025 00:42:52,160 --> 00:42:55,120 Speaker 11: it's somebody who's not supposed to be doing it like 1026 00:42:55,160 --> 00:42:58,080 Speaker 11: a full back, yeah, they're going to go even more bananas. 1027 00:42:58,160 --> 00:43:01,560 Speaker 11: Fullbacks and no tackles. And I've said this on the 1028 00:43:01,560 --> 00:43:04,200 Speaker 11: show a few different times over the years, those guys 1029 00:43:04,640 --> 00:43:07,879 Speaker 11: pretty much have the respect of the entire locker room. 1030 00:43:07,920 --> 00:43:09,960 Speaker 11: Doesn't matter who you are, you can't screw with them 1031 00:43:10,040 --> 00:43:13,240 Speaker 11: because they are the dirty workers. 1032 00:43:13,280 --> 00:43:14,880 Speaker 6: They do the dirty work. 1033 00:43:15,120 --> 00:43:17,640 Speaker 11: More so than anybody else on the team, maybe close 1034 00:43:17,840 --> 00:43:21,080 Speaker 11: close up there as the interior offensive lineman. But man, 1035 00:43:21,160 --> 00:43:25,359 Speaker 11: seeing a fullback score like that, there's a reason it 1036 00:43:25,440 --> 00:43:27,440 Speaker 11: was chaos in a good sort of way on the 1037 00:43:27,480 --> 00:43:30,919 Speaker 11: sideline because it was really really fun to see. I mean, heck, 1038 00:43:31,000 --> 00:43:33,040 Speaker 11: I even had it was chaotic for me because I'm 1039 00:43:33,080 --> 00:43:35,520 Speaker 11: shooting it on my little cell phone. I'm in the 1040 00:43:35,520 --> 00:43:37,520 Speaker 11: corner of the end zone. It's sunny, so he can't 1041 00:43:37,560 --> 00:43:40,160 Speaker 11: really tell what's on the screen. But I was able 1042 00:43:40,160 --> 00:43:43,520 Speaker 11: to follow the action enough, and then when it cleared out, 1043 00:43:43,560 --> 00:43:46,759 Speaker 11: I could just tell by the running style and the 1044 00:43:46,800 --> 00:43:49,720 Speaker 11: long locks flowing. He was like, oh, I drove back 1045 00:43:50,040 --> 00:43:52,719 Speaker 11: and so yeah, that's why I screamed that out. And 1046 00:43:53,200 --> 00:43:56,359 Speaker 11: I was really happy for him, because that guy does 1047 00:43:56,400 --> 00:43:58,040 Speaker 11: a lot of dirty work and it's good to see 1048 00:43:58,080 --> 00:44:01,080 Speaker 11: him get some reward and gets some flowers. 1049 00:44:01,120 --> 00:44:01,880 Speaker 6: They're giving him flowers. 1050 00:44:01,880 --> 00:44:03,400 Speaker 11: It's one of those terms these days. 1051 00:44:03,680 --> 00:44:04,080 Speaker 10: There you go. 1052 00:44:04,400 --> 00:44:05,640 Speaker 11: Let's talk about a guy who had a lot of 1053 00:44:05,680 --> 00:44:07,960 Speaker 11: flowers in his career. He's gonna get some more flowers 1054 00:44:07,960 --> 00:44:12,880 Speaker 11: on Sunday, deservedly. So Jay J Watt going into the 1055 00:44:12,960 --> 00:44:17,800 Speaker 11: ring of honor. I want your wild ass JJ Watt memory. 1056 00:44:17,800 --> 00:44:18,239 Speaker 6: What is it? 1057 00:44:19,719 --> 00:44:19,879 Speaker 1: Well? 1058 00:44:19,920 --> 00:44:23,360 Speaker 2: I go to Cleveland in twenty fourteen. That was my 1059 00:44:23,400 --> 00:44:26,319 Speaker 2: first year on the sidelines, and that was the game. 1060 00:44:26,360 --> 00:44:28,480 Speaker 2: It was interesting that Texans were coming off of bye week, 1061 00:44:28,520 --> 00:44:30,680 Speaker 2: I think, and the Browns were hot. 1062 00:44:30,680 --> 00:44:31,959 Speaker 1: The Browns like six and three. 1063 00:44:32,480 --> 00:44:32,719 Speaker 3: Yeah. 1064 00:44:33,360 --> 00:44:34,040 Speaker 1: In that game. 1065 00:44:34,239 --> 00:44:38,160 Speaker 2: On the first series, JJ lined up wide as a 1066 00:44:38,160 --> 00:44:40,960 Speaker 2: wide receiver and he was being covered by Christian Kirksey 1067 00:44:41,000 --> 00:44:43,800 Speaker 2: who actually had great coverage and we saw Kirko for 1068 00:44:43,880 --> 00:44:44,319 Speaker 2: a few years. 1069 00:44:44,360 --> 00:44:47,560 Speaker 1: Here, congratulations at Kirka on a great career. Yeah, Kirka 1070 00:44:47,600 --> 00:44:48,560 Speaker 1: was good in coverage. 1071 00:44:48,640 --> 00:44:52,400 Speaker 2: And Mallet Ryan Mallett rip big Text throws a dime 1072 00:44:52,600 --> 00:44:57,600 Speaker 2: and JJ is running a fade route against the Cleveland Browns. 1073 00:44:58,160 --> 00:44:59,440 Speaker 1: So that's how the game started. 1074 00:44:59,520 --> 00:45:03,800 Speaker 2: Then JJ has these two fifteen yard roughing the punter. 1075 00:45:03,680 --> 00:45:08,000 Speaker 5: Penalties almost got him to you almost blocked both, I know. 1076 00:45:08,280 --> 00:45:11,000 Speaker 2: And one of the best things was after the second one. 1077 00:45:11,560 --> 00:45:14,319 Speaker 2: I'm watching this interaction. So JJ comes off and JJ 1078 00:45:15,040 --> 00:45:16,640 Speaker 2: had this like he would stand on the sidelines. 1079 00:45:16,719 --> 00:45:17,359 Speaker 1: He's kind of tired. 1080 00:45:17,360 --> 00:45:18,640 Speaker 2: He kind of put his hands on his hips, Like 1081 00:45:18,680 --> 00:45:20,439 Speaker 2: I could see it now, like if you get tired 1082 00:45:20,520 --> 00:45:23,239 Speaker 2: or exasperated about something, or he was upset or somebody 1083 00:45:23,400 --> 00:45:24,720 Speaker 2: was upset to him. That was kind of the stance 1084 00:45:24,719 --> 00:45:27,600 Speaker 2: he took. And I could see Bill O'Brien just fuming. 1085 00:45:28,440 --> 00:45:32,279 Speaker 2: But it's not he can't get MADJ because you know, 1086 00:45:33,280 --> 00:45:35,759 Speaker 2: like JJ did everything for that team, and so he 1087 00:45:35,840 --> 00:45:37,239 Speaker 2: kind of fumes for like a min or so, and 1088 00:45:37,239 --> 00:45:38,960 Speaker 2: then he walks over while he's like get back in there. 1089 00:45:39,200 --> 00:45:40,719 Speaker 2: Walk goes right in the game and gets like a 1090 00:45:40,760 --> 00:45:42,960 Speaker 2: tackle for a loss, like within the first few plays. 1091 00:45:43,040 --> 00:45:46,120 Speaker 2: I'm dying laughing watching this interaction. But it was on 1092 00:45:46,160 --> 00:45:47,600 Speaker 2: a plane home when you and I were seeing next 1093 00:45:47,640 --> 00:45:49,359 Speaker 2: to each other and I kind of hit you as 1094 00:45:49,360 --> 00:45:51,719 Speaker 2: you fall asleep and said, you look at this. It's 1095 00:45:51,760 --> 00:45:53,399 Speaker 2: the game book. And in the game book it has 1096 00:45:53,440 --> 00:45:55,680 Speaker 2: all the stats to all the games, and there's one 1097 00:45:55,680 --> 00:45:58,120 Speaker 2: pay specifically that has the defensive stats, and it's got 1098 00:45:58,160 --> 00:46:00,560 Speaker 2: like all these different columns for all the differ things 1099 00:46:00,960 --> 00:46:05,120 Speaker 2: and stats that a defensive player can measure. And I'm like, Drew, 1100 00:46:05,160 --> 00:46:07,800 Speaker 2: there's a there's a number in every column for JJ, 1101 00:46:07,960 --> 00:46:10,520 Speaker 2: except for maybe one or two. Most guys will have 1102 00:46:11,040 --> 00:46:12,719 Speaker 2: like two or three columns were a number, and then 1103 00:46:12,719 --> 00:46:14,960 Speaker 2: everything else is a zero, and it looks it's just zero. 1104 00:46:15,040 --> 00:46:15,840 Speaker 1: It's all the way across. 1105 00:46:16,080 --> 00:46:20,400 Speaker 2: JJ's got a number in every single column but maybe one. 1106 00:46:20,520 --> 00:46:23,600 Speaker 2: He did that multiple games, and I just I remember 1107 00:46:23,600 --> 00:46:24,799 Speaker 2: you kind of looked at me and you shake, you 1108 00:46:24,800 --> 00:46:27,160 Speaker 2: shook your head. You're like he's incredible, and then you're 1109 00:46:27,200 --> 00:46:29,160 Speaker 2: like he's a jungle cat, like there was a term 1110 00:46:29,200 --> 00:46:30,040 Speaker 2: you always used for him. 1111 00:46:30,160 --> 00:46:31,560 Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, man, this is. 1112 00:46:31,560 --> 00:46:35,040 Speaker 2: Unbelievable, and so I kept track of that throughout his career, 1113 00:46:35,080 --> 00:46:36,960 Speaker 2: like how many times did he hit like all these 1114 00:46:36,960 --> 00:46:40,440 Speaker 2: different columns, And in twenty fourteen he hit all those columns. 1115 00:46:40,760 --> 00:46:44,120 Speaker 2: But from the fade route touchdown to the two roughing 1116 00:46:44,120 --> 00:46:46,440 Speaker 2: the padiser penal or rough of the punter penalties, to 1117 00:46:46,600 --> 00:46:49,600 Speaker 2: four TFLs to two to two and a half sacks, 1118 00:46:49,840 --> 00:46:50,960 Speaker 2: he did it all in. 1119 00:46:50,920 --> 00:46:52,839 Speaker 1: That game against Cleveland, the game that we really needed 1120 00:46:52,840 --> 00:46:53,120 Speaker 1: to have. 1121 00:46:53,320 --> 00:46:55,880 Speaker 2: And then the funny story of on the side lines, 1122 00:46:55,880 --> 00:46:58,360 Speaker 2: I just cracked up so that Cleveland get that Cleveland 1123 00:46:58,440 --> 00:47:00,840 Speaker 2: trip was Oh, it was solid, and that was just 1124 00:47:00,880 --> 00:47:04,480 Speaker 2: an amazing kind of response by JJ Watt and that 1125 00:47:04,600 --> 00:47:06,640 Speaker 2: was wild to say the least. Make sure you go 1126 00:47:06,680 --> 00:47:09,040 Speaker 2: get the full in the Lab podcast because Drew tells 1127 00:47:09,040 --> 00:47:11,600 Speaker 2: a great story of JJ Watt and Ryan Fitzpatrick that 1128 00:47:11,640 --> 00:47:15,239 Speaker 2: you just you gotta hear, because knowing both guys is 1129 00:47:15,280 --> 00:47:20,719 Speaker 2: absolutely dead on. So some guys that 1326 00:55:43,320 --> 00:55:44,839 Speaker 13: came through trucking after that with. 1327 00:55:44,880 --> 00:55:47,439 Speaker 3: Fifteen starts, that's a lot about what you did. 1328 00:55:47,640 --> 00:55:49,840 Speaker 13: I averaged five points two yards of carriage, so you 1329 00:55:49,920 --> 00:55:51,480 Speaker 13: know every two times I touched it, we getting the 1330 00:55:51,480 --> 00:55:51,919 Speaker 13: first down. 1331 00:55:52,080 --> 00:55:54,839 Speaker 12: So were you happy with your your carries? Like, did 1332 00:55:54,840 --> 00:55:56,480 Speaker 12: you see to yourself? You know what, I got a 1333 00:55:56,480 --> 00:55:58,680 Speaker 12: bunch of dogs with me, so we're gonna share this 1334 00:55:58,920 --> 00:56:00,640 Speaker 12: or do you feel like they didn't usually like they 1335 00:56:00,680 --> 00:56:01,040 Speaker 12: should have. 1336 00:56:01,120 --> 00:56:01,319 Speaker 14: Well? 1337 00:56:01,360 --> 00:56:02,640 Speaker 3: I was always a team player. 1338 00:56:02,680 --> 00:56:04,680 Speaker 13: I come from the greatest high school on the planet 1339 00:56:04,719 --> 00:56:07,520 Speaker 13: in New Orleans, Giant Curtis Christian School, so we were 1340 00:56:07,520 --> 00:56:10,600 Speaker 13: taught team ball, So I never got into the individual 1341 00:56:10,680 --> 00:56:13,080 Speaker 13: status part of it. Now, looking back at it as 1342 00:56:13,080 --> 00:56:15,560 Speaker 13: a grown man, I wish I was a little bit 1343 00:56:15,560 --> 00:56:16,520 Speaker 13: more selfish, you. 1344 00:56:16,560 --> 00:56:17,120 Speaker 3: Know what I mean. 1345 00:56:17,200 --> 00:56:19,640 Speaker 13: But that just wasn't a part of my DNA. I 1346 00:56:19,680 --> 00:56:21,279 Speaker 13: was down to do whatever the team needed to do 1347 00:56:21,400 --> 00:56:24,200 Speaker 13: to win. And I didn't look at personal stats back then, 1348 00:56:24,239 --> 00:56:26,319 Speaker 13: But now looking at it and where I fill in 1349 00:56:26,320 --> 00:56:31,680 Speaker 13: the record books, I wish I was. It all worked 1350 00:56:31,680 --> 00:56:34,239 Speaker 13: out fine, and then a bit I got injured too. 1351 00:56:34,320 --> 00:56:36,400 Speaker 13: That that that derailed me from a lot of yours. 1352 00:56:36,440 --> 00:56:39,360 Speaker 13: First game of my sophomore year, I had the most 1353 00:56:39,400 --> 00:56:42,160 Speaker 13: momentum ever coming into that that off season I had. 1354 00:56:42,200 --> 00:56:45,680 Speaker 3: I was two thirty eight eight percent body fat. 1355 00:56:45,719 --> 00:56:48,600 Speaker 13: I'm talking about straight monster and were playing the University 1356 00:56:48,600 --> 00:56:50,879 Speaker 13: of Miami. First game of the year, got a high 1357 00:56:50,880 --> 00:56:53,440 Speaker 13: angle spring and uh, you know, I didn't get back 1358 00:56:53,480 --> 00:56:55,239 Speaker 13: right till like the last two or three games for 1359 00:56:55,280 --> 00:56:55,800 Speaker 13: that season. 1360 00:56:55,800 --> 00:56:57,879 Speaker 3: And that that that took, that took a lot out 1361 00:56:57,880 --> 00:56:58,080 Speaker 3: of me. 1362 00:56:58,239 --> 00:57:01,239 Speaker 12: I was gonna say those it won my third year 1363 00:57:01,280 --> 00:57:03,319 Speaker 12: in the league, man they stay with you. 1364 00:57:03,480 --> 00:57:05,960 Speaker 13: That's what I'm saying. Like, came back running high. I 1365 00:57:05,960 --> 00:57:08,440 Speaker 13: couldn't get my leveries, didn't have no bursts. Now, the 1366 00:57:08,520 --> 00:57:11,440 Speaker 13: last two games of that year, I started popping long runs. 1367 00:57:11,680 --> 00:57:13,600 Speaker 13: My sophomore year, I had three carris for eighty five 1368 00:57:13,680 --> 00:57:16,200 Speaker 13: yards against Michigan. I have his thirty up there, you 1369 00:57:16,240 --> 00:57:18,400 Speaker 13: know what I mean, seventy six yard run second time 1370 00:57:18,440 --> 00:57:19,000 Speaker 13: I touched it. 1371 00:57:19,040 --> 00:57:20,760 Speaker 3: So I was getting back in the form. 1372 00:57:20,800 --> 00:57:23,280 Speaker 13: But if I had that whole season, I think my 1373 00:57:23,320 --> 00:57:25,120 Speaker 13: stats would being a whole nother stratusphere. 1374 00:57:25,120 --> 00:57:26,360 Speaker 3: To be honest with you, Michigan. 1375 00:57:26,440 --> 00:57:28,400 Speaker 12: So one of my good friends, and now he's a 1376 00:57:28,440 --> 00:57:31,440 Speaker 12: neighbor of mine, player a train, Anthony Thomas. 1377 00:57:31,480 --> 00:57:33,800 Speaker 3: I love him. I love her. Yeah, he was on 1378 00:57:33,840 --> 00:57:36,960 Speaker 3: that team. I love him. I love I have not 1379 00:57:37,080 --> 00:57:39,160 Speaker 3: I don't even know him. Okay, I don't even know him. 1380 00:57:39,200 --> 00:57:41,680 Speaker 13: I just love him because he's from Louisiana and he 1381 00:57:41,840 --> 00:57:43,240 Speaker 13: was a dog running back. 1382 00:57:43,600 --> 00:57:45,400 Speaker 3: He was a dog. If you let him know I 1383 00:57:45,440 --> 00:57:45,960 Speaker 3: love him. 1384 00:57:46,440 --> 00:57:49,120 Speaker 12: You'll love him if you meet him. Now, family man, 1385 00:57:49,560 --> 00:57:51,520 Speaker 12: this boy yeah just country. 1386 00:57:51,600 --> 00:57:51,840 Speaker 14: Yeah. 1387 00:57:52,200 --> 00:57:55,320 Speaker 13: Yeah, he come from the country, Louisiana. I'm from the city. Yeah, 1388 00:57:55,400 --> 00:57:57,600 Speaker 13: he come from the neck of the woods. Look, this 1389 00:57:57,480 --> 00:57:59,320 Speaker 13: is this is how closed. Me and a train. Anthony 1390 00:57:59,360 --> 00:58:02,560 Speaker 13: Thomas are my RN and lawnmower wasn't working. So I 1391 00:58:02,640 --> 00:58:04,280 Speaker 13: texted him. I was like, Hey, what should I do? 1392 00:58:04,600 --> 00:58:06,480 Speaker 13: This food comes over with a black and mouth and 1393 00:58:08,480 --> 00:58:11,080 Speaker 13: with the socks and the slides the fingers. 1394 00:58:12,600 --> 00:58:12,840 Speaker 1: Wow. 1395 00:58:13,160 --> 00:58:15,680 Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely definitely would love to meet 1396 00:58:15,720 --> 00:58:18,640 Speaker 13: him because he's a monster. Yeah, we definitely make He's 1397 00:58:18,680 --> 00:58:19,120 Speaker 13: a monster. 1398 00:58:19,320 --> 00:58:22,200 Speaker 12: So so you take that team mindset and you bring 1399 00:58:22,280 --> 00:58:24,080 Speaker 12: it to the Houston Texans when they draft you out 1400 00:58:24,080 --> 00:58:26,520 Speaker 12: of the fourth round in two thousand and two. And 1401 00:58:26,600 --> 00:58:29,040 Speaker 12: I'm sure that was important because at that time people 1402 00:58:29,080 --> 00:58:30,920 Speaker 12: feeling their way around. But like you said, they hit 1403 00:58:30,960 --> 00:58:33,640 Speaker 12: the ground running. But what was your role do you know? 1404 00:58:33,680 --> 00:58:34,920 Speaker 12: Early on with the Texans. 1405 00:58:34,960 --> 00:58:37,120 Speaker 13: To be honest with you, I feel like I was 1406 00:58:37,120 --> 00:58:39,000 Speaker 13: the most vocal player in the huddle. You know, we 1407 00:58:39,080 --> 00:58:41,360 Speaker 13: had David Carr, but I've never been in a huddle 1408 00:58:41,360 --> 00:58:43,520 Speaker 13: with a quarterback, and a quarterback was the leader, Like, 1409 00:58:43,600 --> 00:58:46,840 Speaker 13: I'm my energy and my my dog that I bring 1410 00:58:47,000 --> 00:58:48,800 Speaker 13: is going to resonate with the rest of the huddle. 1411 00:58:48,960 --> 00:58:50,880 Speaker 13: So I tried to bring that come out. But listen, 1412 00:58:51,080 --> 00:58:53,880 Speaker 13: I was a rookie like everybody else. We starting seven 1413 00:58:53,960 --> 00:58:56,439 Speaker 13: rookies on offense that year. Like we got we got 1414 00:58:56,440 --> 00:58:58,240 Speaker 13: we got punished back there, you know what I'm saying. 1415 00:58:58,320 --> 00:59:01,040 Speaker 13: But we kept we got up fighting. We only had 1416 00:59:01,040 --> 00:59:03,600 Speaker 13: two running backs on staff. We didn't miss a Me 1417 00:59:03,640 --> 00:59:06,120 Speaker 13: and James Allen didn't miss a rep that year. We 1418 00:59:06,160 --> 00:59:08,760 Speaker 13: took that pounding, got up, kept it pushing, you know 1419 00:59:08,840 --> 00:59:12,240 Speaker 13: what I mean. So it was amazing. But at the 1420 00:59:12,240 --> 00:59:13,960 Speaker 13: same time, you know, it was rough back there. I 1421 00:59:13,960 --> 00:59:15,080 Speaker 13: gotta tell you we got pounded. 1422 00:59:15,360 --> 00:59:18,080 Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah that strongs don't have two Yeah, we had 1423 00:59:18,080 --> 00:59:20,240 Speaker 12: too where one practice squad guy we didn't have nobody 1424 00:59:20,240 --> 00:59:22,959 Speaker 12: else to hold y'all took every rep, every rep, every 1425 00:59:22,960 --> 00:59:26,080 Speaker 12: rep straight up. So that means y'all had more at 1426 00:59:26,120 --> 00:59:28,360 Speaker 12: a certain position to overload a certain position because you're 1427 00:59:28,360 --> 00:59:30,840 Speaker 12: supposed to have like six or seven running backs for practice. 1428 00:59:30,880 --> 00:59:33,720 Speaker 13: So we had me, James Allen and then and then 1429 00:59:33,800 --> 00:59:35,400 Speaker 13: we kept the guy Michael Jenkins. 1430 00:59:35,440 --> 00:59:38,040 Speaker 3: He was on a practice he was on a practice squad. 1431 00:59:38,080 --> 00:59:39,640 Speaker 3: What school did he go? Do you remember? He was 1432 00:59:39,640 --> 00:59:40,600 Speaker 3: from a smaller squad. 1433 00:59:40,880 --> 00:59:43,880 Speaker 12: I can't remember. For some reason, I remember that name. Man, 1434 00:59:43,960 --> 00:59:45,880 Speaker 12: I did not know that that's the story in itself. 1435 00:59:46,040 --> 00:59:48,480 Speaker 12: We told the rock, we told the load. Yeah that's 1436 00:59:48,560 --> 00:59:49,439 Speaker 12: strong right there. 1437 00:59:49,520 --> 00:59:49,840 Speaker 3: Yeah. 1438 00:59:49,880 --> 00:59:52,440 Speaker 12: So after that season, you feel like you get the 1439 00:59:52,520 --> 00:59:54,720 Speaker 12: rookie year under your belt and you understand like kind 1440 00:59:54,720 --> 00:59:56,080 Speaker 12: of the ways of the NFL. 1441 00:59:56,120 --> 00:59:56,840 Speaker 3: What was year two? 1442 00:59:56,920 --> 00:59:59,080 Speaker 13: Like, Well, this is when me and the Texans had 1443 00:59:59,080 --> 01:00:02,560 Speaker 13: a disconnect. They just took me out of the playbook. 1444 01:00:02,720 --> 01:00:04,959 Speaker 13: They didn't explain it to me. They didn't They didn't 1445 01:00:04,960 --> 01:00:06,520 Speaker 13: tell me why I wasn't going to get a chance 1446 01:00:06,560 --> 01:00:08,880 Speaker 13: to keep my store in job. They just decided to 1447 01:00:08,920 --> 01:00:11,000 Speaker 13: go another direction and they went out and brought him. 1448 01:00:11,040 --> 01:00:12,800 Speaker 13: I love him to debth my home in Stacey Mack. 1449 01:00:13,080 --> 01:00:15,200 Speaker 13: They went and brought him into from Jacksonville, which he 1450 01:00:15,280 --> 01:00:18,720 Speaker 13: was with offensive coordinator Chris Palmer in Jacksonville before that, 1451 01:00:19,280 --> 01:00:22,000 Speaker 13: so you know that that's how the politics played out. 1452 01:00:22,280 --> 01:00:25,960 Speaker 3: They brought him in to replace me. Mac didn't work out. 1453 01:00:26,480 --> 01:00:28,560 Speaker 13: That's how Dominick Davis was able to slide in there 1454 01:00:28,560 --> 01:00:31,120 Speaker 13: and get that spoty and I got a lot of love. 1455 01:00:31,240 --> 01:00:32,120 Speaker 3: Let me say this public. 1456 01:00:32,240 --> 01:00:34,320 Speaker 13: I got so much love for Dominic Davis because he 1457 01:00:34,520 --> 01:00:37,640 Speaker 13: is an example of getting your opportunity, taking that and 1458 01:00:37,720 --> 01:00:40,640 Speaker 13: running with it. And you know, so he played great football, 1459 01:00:40,640 --> 01:00:42,800 Speaker 13: and pretty much from there on out, they brought in 1460 01:00:42,840 --> 01:00:44,440 Speaker 13: a whole bunch of running backs, but it was pretty 1461 01:00:44,480 --> 01:00:45,560 Speaker 13: much me and double D from there. 1462 01:00:45,600 --> 01:00:47,920 Speaker 3: If he didn't start, I would start. He get hurt. 1463 01:00:47,960 --> 01:00:49,440 Speaker 13: I come in, step up, and you know, do what 1464 01:00:49,480 --> 01:00:52,360 Speaker 13: I need to do. But that's that's pretty much that 1465 01:00:52,720 --> 01:00:54,920 Speaker 13: second year. They threw me out of the playbook. Then 1466 01:00:54,960 --> 01:00:57,600 Speaker 13: the third year, I was able to get back my 1467 01:00:57,680 --> 01:01:00,480 Speaker 13: first start, rush full of one hundred yeard you know, 1468 01:01:00,720 --> 01:01:03,400 Speaker 13: seventy two yard touchdown to the house. They called it back. 1469 01:01:03,440 --> 01:01:06,240 Speaker 13: It's all good to still look pretty. But we won 1470 01:01:06,320 --> 01:01:08,960 Speaker 13: the game conveningly. So I knew I could play in 1471 01:01:09,040 --> 01:01:10,880 Speaker 13: this level. I knew I could play, you know what 1472 01:01:10,880 --> 01:01:12,920 Speaker 13: I mean. I hadn't started since my rookie year. My 1473 01:01:12,960 --> 01:01:14,920 Speaker 13: first start, I come and get a hundred. I know 1474 01:01:15,000 --> 01:01:17,080 Speaker 13: I could do this. Then the next week I don't 1475 01:01:17,080 --> 01:01:19,200 Speaker 13: play again, you know. So it was a lot of 1476 01:01:19,200 --> 01:01:21,480 Speaker 13: that going on. So I kind of just kept my 1477 01:01:21,520 --> 01:01:24,240 Speaker 13: head down, man, stuck to my my special teams role. 1478 01:01:24,320 --> 01:01:27,560 Speaker 13: Saluted Joe Marciano. He brought me in and was like, hey, 1479 01:01:28,000 --> 01:01:29,720 Speaker 13: they're not gonna use your office, bro. I love to 1480 01:01:29,720 --> 01:01:31,880 Speaker 13: have your own special teams and I took that the 1481 01:01:31,920 --> 01:01:34,120 Speaker 13: heart and I just became a dog on special teams 1482 01:01:34,120 --> 01:01:34,440 Speaker 13: from there. 1483 01:01:34,560 --> 01:01:36,760 Speaker 12: I love that attitude. I love that attitude though. First 1484 01:01:36,800 --> 01:01:39,320 Speaker 12: of all, before we go on Dominique Davis. Yeah, he's 1485 01:01:39,320 --> 01:01:42,760 Speaker 12: from Louisiana as well. Yes, sir bo Bridge, y'all out there. Yeah, 1486 01:01:42,840 --> 01:01:44,840 Speaker 12: that's why I was so surprised. Yeah, you told me 1487 01:01:44,880 --> 01:01:48,400 Speaker 12: what you said about how Stay and Joe Marciano loved him. Yeah, 1488 01:01:48,840 --> 01:01:51,439 Speaker 12: doll and that sounds like something he would say. 1489 01:01:51,480 --> 01:01:52,320 Speaker 3: Like, I don't know. 1490 01:01:53,800 --> 01:01:55,760 Speaker 13: The man, I swear to god, the man ran and 1491 01:01:55,800 --> 01:01:57,560 Speaker 13: caught me in the parking lot during the summer. 1492 01:01:57,600 --> 01:01:59,200 Speaker 3: I'm going to my car after working out. 1493 01:01:59,280 --> 01:02:01,400 Speaker 13: The man runs out there and tells me like, hey, Jay, 1494 01:02:01,440 --> 01:02:02,880 Speaker 13: I don't know what's going on, bro, but you're not 1495 01:02:02,920 --> 01:02:05,640 Speaker 13: gonna play offense this year. So I told if they 1496 01:02:05,640 --> 01:02:08,880 Speaker 13: don't want you, I take you on special teams. I'm like, 1497 01:02:08,960 --> 01:02:10,480 Speaker 13: I bet you know what I'm saying. I ain't nothing, 1498 01:02:10,480 --> 01:02:12,000 Speaker 13: like I could do nothing about it. But I'm like, 1499 01:02:12,080 --> 01:02:14,520 Speaker 13: how you couldn't have watched the tape. You couldn't have 1500 01:02:14,520 --> 01:02:17,480 Speaker 13: said that you didn't see me making plays when opportunities 1501 01:02:17,480 --> 01:02:18,840 Speaker 13: presented itself my rookie year. 1502 01:02:18,920 --> 01:02:22,080 Speaker 12: So I just didn't understand it. That's the weird thing 1503 01:02:22,080 --> 01:02:24,400 Speaker 12: about that. In my twelve years in the NFL, every 1504 01:02:24,480 --> 01:02:27,680 Speaker 12: year there was always that head scratching moment, And it's 1505 01:02:27,720 --> 01:02:30,000 Speaker 12: more the coaching staff than the organization where I'm like, 1506 01:02:31,000 --> 01:02:31,800 Speaker 12: what are they seeing? 1507 01:02:31,840 --> 01:02:32,320 Speaker 3: What are they not? 1508 01:02:32,520 --> 01:02:34,680 Speaker 13: And it's like, if you look at my background everything 1509 01:02:34,720 --> 01:02:36,600 Speaker 13: out at my high school, we're the winning this high 1510 01:02:36,600 --> 01:02:39,120 Speaker 13: school in America and two and four more wins my 1511 01:02:39,160 --> 01:02:41,120 Speaker 13: coach would be the winning this high school football coach 1512 01:02:41,160 --> 01:02:41,880 Speaker 13: in America. 1513 01:02:42,200 --> 01:02:45,000 Speaker 3: So winning this football coach period any level. 1514 01:02:44,960 --> 01:02:47,840 Speaker 13: Six hundred and twenty two wins coming up, twenty eight 1515 01:02:47,920 --> 01:02:52,560 Speaker 13: state championships. Side of New Orleans, we do this Ohio State. 1516 01:02:52,600 --> 01:02:55,120 Speaker 13: The next year after I left, they won a championship. 1517 01:02:55,120 --> 01:02:57,200 Speaker 13: But guess what Jim Trussel will tell you, it was 1518 01:02:57,240 --> 01:03:01,520 Speaker 13: my leadership that I left in plays work ethic that 1519 01:03:02,040 --> 01:03:03,680 Speaker 13: they went and got that the next year when I 1520 01:03:03,720 --> 01:03:06,000 Speaker 13: was a rookie here doing my thing. So I don't 1521 01:03:06,000 --> 01:03:07,560 Speaker 13: know why you would take the keys off my hand. 1522 01:03:07,600 --> 01:03:09,280 Speaker 13: I'll never understand that. 1523 01:03:09,480 --> 01:03:12,520 Speaker 12: And it sounds like you're more of a falling line 1524 01:03:12,520 --> 01:03:13,200 Speaker 12: type soldier. 1525 01:03:13,520 --> 01:03:16,480 Speaker 3: I'm gonna do. I'm I didn't cry about it. I didn't. 1526 01:03:16,560 --> 01:03:16,840 Speaker 3: I didn't. 1527 01:03:17,040 --> 01:03:18,480 Speaker 13: I didn't even cry about it. I didn't go to 1528 01:03:18,520 --> 01:03:21,040 Speaker 13: my coach about it. I don't do that. I figure 1529 01:03:21,320 --> 01:03:22,640 Speaker 13: I let my play do my talking. 1530 01:03:22,720 --> 01:03:25,959 Speaker 12: I never talked to a coach about Amen, what's going Hey, 1531 01:03:26,040 --> 01:03:27,720 Speaker 12: I must not be the best guy right now. 1532 01:03:28,040 --> 01:03:29,360 Speaker 3: But guess what, I'm gonna keep working. 1533 01:03:29,400 --> 01:03:31,760 Speaker 13: And every time my opportunities came back, and I ended 1534 01:03:31,840 --> 01:03:33,920 Speaker 13: up being the last man standing. I started my last 1535 01:03:33,960 --> 01:03:38,600 Speaker 13: few games here, So all those other backs they brought in, Nah, but. 1536 01:03:38,640 --> 01:03:39,760 Speaker 3: That's a life lesson right there. 1537 01:03:39,840 --> 01:03:42,520 Speaker 12: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like, when things don't 1538 01:03:42,560 --> 01:03:44,760 Speaker 12: go your way, if you just keep grind that eventually 1539 01:03:44,960 --> 01:03:46,080 Speaker 12: it'll work his way out. 1540 01:03:46,120 --> 01:03:48,480 Speaker 3: And that's why you started. And my dad had a saying. 1541 01:03:48,720 --> 01:03:50,880 Speaker 13: He always just tell me when I was frustrated, son, 1542 01:03:50,960 --> 01:03:54,040 Speaker 13: don't get bitter, just get better. So I always stuck 1543 01:03:54,080 --> 01:03:56,200 Speaker 13: to that. That's why I never cried. I never complained. 1544 01:03:56,240 --> 01:03:59,240 Speaker 13: I just kept playing and always and my opportunities always came. 1545 01:03:59,280 --> 01:04:01,400 Speaker 3: They always fell my leapt for whatever reason. 1546 01:04:01,720 --> 01:04:03,680 Speaker 12: Now you're doing a lot of stuff with the Texans, 1547 01:04:03,680 --> 01:04:06,800 Speaker 12: and obviously there's a lot of excitement here. The mcnary's 1548 01:04:06,880 --> 01:04:08,880 Speaker 12: doing an awesome job with the excitement. Now it's time 1549 01:04:08,880 --> 01:04:10,960 Speaker 12: to keep winning, you know, all said and done. Yeah, 1550 01:04:11,000 --> 01:04:13,080 Speaker 12: I don't care how many cool T shirts we got. 1551 01:04:13,720 --> 01:04:15,560 Speaker 12: You know, Doug's doing an awesome job with that, but 1552 01:04:16,040 --> 01:04:18,080 Speaker 12: you got to win on the field to keep the momentum. 1553 01:04:18,320 --> 01:04:20,680 Speaker 12: But you've been a part of it. So when did 1554 01:04:20,720 --> 01:04:23,400 Speaker 12: you feel like, you know what, the relationship has been repaired? 1555 01:04:23,560 --> 01:04:25,120 Speaker 12: And again, I know it's more of the coaching staff 1556 01:04:25,160 --> 01:04:28,160 Speaker 12: than the organization. Yeah, it was never an organizational thing. 1557 01:04:28,280 --> 01:04:30,640 Speaker 12: It was one coach. I love everybody else. I love 1558 01:04:30,720 --> 01:04:33,600 Speaker 12: Dom Cables, I love Joe Marciano, I love Chick Harris. 1559 01:04:33,920 --> 01:04:35,800 Speaker 12: I just feel like Chris Palmer didn't really give me 1560 01:04:35,840 --> 01:04:37,520 Speaker 12: a shot, you know what I'm saying. And he ended 1561 01:04:37,600 --> 01:04:39,480 Speaker 12: up coming in and meeting that took me my fourth year, 1562 01:04:39,640 --> 01:04:41,480 Speaker 12: Like he was like, man, I gotta say, ja, man, 1563 01:04:41,560 --> 01:04:42,479 Speaker 12: I got you wrong. 1564 01:04:42,960 --> 01:04:43,120 Speaker 7: You know. 1565 01:04:43,200 --> 01:04:44,920 Speaker 13: I'm like, yeah, it's all good, but do you cost 1566 01:04:45,000 --> 01:04:46,480 Speaker 13: me a lot of time, a lot of carriers, and 1567 01:04:46,520 --> 01:04:48,720 Speaker 13: a lot of money at this point, so that don't 1568 01:04:48,720 --> 01:04:52,240 Speaker 13: really help me. But okay, I appreciate it, but I 1569 01:04:52,280 --> 01:04:53,200 Speaker 13: forgot what I was talking about. 1570 01:04:53,680 --> 01:04:55,640 Speaker 3: No, that's it. 1571 01:04:56,680 --> 01:04:58,800 Speaker 12: When did you say I'm willing to go back and 1572 01:04:58,840 --> 01:05:02,600 Speaker 12: do more well, you know, honestly, bro, When I left 1573 01:05:02,640 --> 01:05:06,400 Speaker 12: the league, I left on bad terms because of my decisions, 1574 01:05:06,720 --> 01:05:08,160 Speaker 12: nobody else's decisions but mine. 1575 01:05:08,160 --> 01:05:10,320 Speaker 13: But I left mad at the NFL. I left mad 1576 01:05:10,360 --> 01:05:12,600 Speaker 13: at everybody in the NFL. So I didn't watch NFL 1577 01:05:12,640 --> 01:05:15,080 Speaker 13: for like twelve years, bro, like at all, at all. 1578 01:05:15,440 --> 01:05:17,840 Speaker 13: Didn't talk about it, not watching no games, nothing, not 1579 01:05:17,920 --> 01:05:22,000 Speaker 13: good none. But as I grow older, as I'm mature, 1580 01:05:22,480 --> 01:05:25,160 Speaker 13: the Texans invited me back for Andre's Ring of Honor. 1581 01:05:25,200 --> 01:05:27,600 Speaker 13: That was the first time I came back, and it 1582 01:05:27,680 --> 01:05:28,840 Speaker 13: was such an amazing time. 1583 01:05:28,880 --> 01:05:29,840 Speaker 3: It was so much love. 1584 01:05:29,920 --> 01:05:32,640 Speaker 13: You know, I've been connected with the organization basically since 1585 01:05:32,640 --> 01:05:35,080 Speaker 13: then because right after that, they sent me over to Africa, 1586 01:05:35,240 --> 01:05:38,720 Speaker 13: Katar and Abu Dhabi to visit the troops. So that 1587 01:05:38,840 --> 01:05:40,560 Speaker 13: was a life changing trip to go on that side 1588 01:05:40,560 --> 01:05:42,480 Speaker 13: of the world, which I had never done before. So 1589 01:05:42,720 --> 01:05:44,840 Speaker 13: the Texans have been nothing but a blessing to me, 1590 01:05:45,160 --> 01:05:47,680 Speaker 13: even still till this day. Shout out the candas Maybury 1591 01:05:48,040 --> 01:05:50,280 Speaker 13: always opening the floodgates for me when I was back 1592 01:05:50,320 --> 01:05:52,760 Speaker 13: in town and invite me here as an ambassador. 1593 01:05:53,160 --> 01:05:54,200 Speaker 3: I really love what I do. 1594 01:05:54,240 --> 01:05:56,080 Speaker 13: You know, me, I always got my phone out I'm 1595 01:05:56,080 --> 01:05:58,880 Speaker 13: always making it look fun because it is. But we're 1596 01:05:58,920 --> 01:06:01,720 Speaker 13: a part of a five I point seven billion dollar organization. 1597 01:06:01,800 --> 01:06:03,760 Speaker 13: We should be proud of that, you know what I'm saying. 1598 01:06:03,800 --> 01:06:06,200 Speaker 13: So when I go out, I represent Achtown to the fullest. 1599 01:06:06,200 --> 01:06:08,040 Speaker 13: No matter where I'm at, whether I'm in the country 1600 01:06:08,400 --> 01:06:11,000 Speaker 13: or am I international, I'm still representing the Texans. 1601 01:06:11,400 --> 01:06:11,720 Speaker 3: You know what. 1602 01:06:11,760 --> 01:06:15,200 Speaker 12: That kind of hurts me that you spent twelve years 1603 01:06:15,480 --> 01:06:18,200 Speaker 12: away from the game because you put so much into 1604 01:06:18,280 --> 01:06:21,000 Speaker 12: it from being a little jit young man. Yeah until 1605 01:06:21,040 --> 01:06:23,200 Speaker 12: look I'm talking like I'm not in front of a 1606 01:06:23,240 --> 01:06:26,760 Speaker 12: mic on your little jit but seven years old, from 1607 01:06:26,840 --> 01:06:31,920 Speaker 12: a young man to the NFL. Regardless of what coaches 1608 01:06:31,960 --> 01:06:35,800 Speaker 12: got wrong, you should always appreciate what you gave to 1609 01:06:35,840 --> 01:06:37,360 Speaker 12: the game. So that hurts me to hear that you 1610 01:06:37,400 --> 01:06:39,720 Speaker 12: went twelve years not really able to watch it. 1611 01:06:39,880 --> 01:06:41,920 Speaker 3: I didn't. I hated myself. 1612 01:06:42,120 --> 01:06:43,760 Speaker 13: I know, I left a lot of money on the 1613 01:06:43,760 --> 01:06:46,080 Speaker 13: table with some of my decisions that I made after 1614 01:06:46,120 --> 01:06:48,680 Speaker 13: I left Houston. So I just, you know, one or 1615 01:06:48,680 --> 01:06:50,600 Speaker 13: two bad decisions. Man, take your life in a whole 1616 01:06:50,600 --> 01:06:53,200 Speaker 13: another direction, you know what I'm saying. So I put 1617 01:06:53,240 --> 01:06:55,440 Speaker 13: the work in twenty seven years of my life. I 1618 01:06:55,520 --> 01:06:58,160 Speaker 13: earned my pay and you know, one or two bad decisions, 1619 01:06:58,160 --> 01:07:01,440 Speaker 13: I never saw my second contract. So therefore, I was 1620 01:07:01,480 --> 01:07:04,480 Speaker 13: bitter about that a long time. But as I matured, 1621 01:07:04,600 --> 01:07:07,280 Speaker 13: as I just sit back and now actually look at 1622 01:07:07,280 --> 01:07:09,880 Speaker 13: my career, I can actually be proud about it. I 1623 01:07:09,880 --> 01:07:12,720 Speaker 13: got my film in from NFL Films that did a 1624 01:07:12,720 --> 01:07:14,200 Speaker 13: lot of it, because that's how I went to start 1625 01:07:14,240 --> 01:07:17,040 Speaker 13: watching and oh, man, you man, we're playing against the 1626 01:07:17,040 --> 01:07:19,120 Speaker 13: best of the best, this hall of famers out here, 1627 01:07:19,120 --> 01:07:21,640 Speaker 13: we stiff farming in the face were running through their face. 1628 01:07:22,080 --> 01:07:23,480 Speaker 13: So you know, that gave me a lot of my 1629 01:07:23,560 --> 01:07:26,240 Speaker 13: pride back in what I've accomplished. And right now, man, 1630 01:07:26,440 --> 01:07:28,440 Speaker 13: I'm extremely happy about to be in ducted into my 1631 01:07:28,520 --> 01:07:31,040 Speaker 13: high school Hall of Fame in New Orleans in two weeks. 1632 01:07:31,400 --> 01:07:34,640 Speaker 13: So I'm excited about that in Louisiana, and uh, you know, 1633 01:07:34,800 --> 01:07:35,440 Speaker 13: that's what it is. 1634 01:07:36,080 --> 01:07:36,680 Speaker 3: So two things. 1635 01:07:36,680 --> 01:07:38,840 Speaker 12: For the people who don't know the NFL films, if 1636 01:07:38,840 --> 01:07:41,160 Speaker 12: you reach out to them, they'll compile some of your 1637 01:07:41,200 --> 01:07:43,640 Speaker 12: highlights and send it to you. So it's cool. I 1638 01:07:43,680 --> 01:07:45,600 Speaker 12: did mine a couple of years ago. And you know, 1639 01:07:45,640 --> 01:07:47,479 Speaker 12: when I think of my career, I'm like, I'm mainly 1640 01:07:47,520 --> 01:07:49,920 Speaker 12: a backup role player. I kind of downplayed, but then 1641 01:07:49,920 --> 01:07:52,439 Speaker 12: when I saw those highlights exactly, I called my son. 1642 01:07:52,520 --> 01:07:55,000 Speaker 12: I'm like, hey, yeah, your daddy used to do it. 1643 01:07:55,480 --> 01:07:57,160 Speaker 3: Come home. So you're talking about. 1644 01:07:56,960 --> 01:08:00,760 Speaker 12: It's pretty cool because the NFL could be very hummed because, 1645 01:08:01,040 --> 01:08:04,240 Speaker 12: like you came from that great high school tradition, you 1646 01:08:04,320 --> 01:08:07,040 Speaker 12: went to the biggest brand in Ohio state. Then you 1647 01:08:07,080 --> 01:08:09,320 Speaker 12: get to the league and sometimes you feel like and 1648 01:08:09,360 --> 01:08:11,640 Speaker 12: I felt this way, like I could do more for y'all. 1649 01:08:11,760 --> 01:08:14,240 Speaker 12: But then when you get a chance to see your highlights, you're. 1650 01:08:14,080 --> 01:08:16,720 Speaker 13: Like, yeah, you know, I was a damn good football Yeah, 1651 01:08:17,120 --> 01:08:18,720 Speaker 13: and that's all that matter, you know what I'm saying. 1652 01:08:18,840 --> 01:08:22,840 Speaker 13: So hey, it worked out how it worked out. But 1653 01:08:23,000 --> 01:08:25,559 Speaker 13: I'm definitely happy to be here. I'm happy to still 1654 01:08:25,560 --> 01:08:26,840 Speaker 13: be a part of this organization. 1655 01:08:27,600 --> 01:08:29,479 Speaker 3: Big. We got to talk about c J. Stroud before 1656 01:08:29,479 --> 01:08:30,120 Speaker 3: we get out of here. 1657 01:08:30,200 --> 01:08:31,960 Speaker 12: Oh No, I want to get your take because a 1658 01:08:31,960 --> 01:08:34,439 Speaker 12: lot of the ogs, you know, we'll talk about stuff 1659 01:08:34,479 --> 01:08:37,800 Speaker 12: in the past, but you you're very cognizant of what's 1660 01:08:37,800 --> 01:08:40,040 Speaker 12: going on with the current team, right, you know about 1661 01:08:40,760 --> 01:08:43,080 Speaker 12: preparing for the Steelers and CJ. Stroute and I want 1662 01:08:43,080 --> 01:08:46,040 Speaker 12: to get your take on your former or fellow I 1663 01:08:46,040 --> 01:08:49,040 Speaker 12: should say fellow Ohio State Buckeye, and how. 1664 01:08:48,880 --> 01:08:52,519 Speaker 13: Mature he looks early on as a rookie. It doesn't 1665 01:08:52,520 --> 01:08:56,320 Speaker 13: surprise me anybody who knows I. I was the one 1666 01:08:56,360 --> 01:08:59,120 Speaker 13: screaming CJ Stroud. A lot of guys that not want 1667 01:08:59,160 --> 01:09:02,479 Speaker 13: CJ Stroud. They would have chosen the other guy if 1668 01:09:02,520 --> 01:09:06,519 Speaker 13: they had their choice. Thank god out front office coach Ryan's, 1669 01:09:06,560 --> 01:09:09,960 Speaker 13: coach Ryan's and Nick Casario, they made the right decision. 1670 01:09:10,320 --> 01:09:10,519 Speaker 3: Man. 1671 01:09:10,600 --> 01:09:13,200 Speaker 13: Listen, CJ just a great human being. That's why I 1672 01:09:13,240 --> 01:09:16,040 Speaker 13: love him. Like I tell people, I watched every single 1673 01:09:16,120 --> 01:09:18,519 Speaker 13: snap of this kid. You can't tell me nothing about 1674 01:09:18,520 --> 01:09:21,599 Speaker 13: c J. Stroud because I watched Buckeye football like that. 1675 01:09:21,760 --> 01:09:24,719 Speaker 13: I don't watch an NFL, but Buckeye football I don't miss, 1676 01:09:25,160 --> 01:09:25,599 Speaker 13: So I. 1677 01:09:25,640 --> 01:09:26,640 Speaker 3: Know everything about him. 1678 01:09:26,680 --> 01:09:28,880 Speaker 13: I've seen him go through adversity, I've seen him lose 1679 01:09:28,880 --> 01:09:32,400 Speaker 13: big games. I've seen him in every situation. So I 1680 01:09:32,520 --> 01:09:34,880 Speaker 13: kind of figured that if the game wasn't just too 1681 01:09:34,920 --> 01:09:37,320 Speaker 13: fast for him, he would be phenomenal. 1682 01:09:37,479 --> 01:09:39,160 Speaker 3: And that's what he's showing me right now. The game 1683 01:09:39,280 --> 01:09:40,080 Speaker 3: is not too fast. 1684 01:09:40,120 --> 01:09:43,439 Speaker 13: Even with the decimated offensive line right now, they still 1685 01:09:43,479 --> 01:09:45,960 Speaker 13: been able to put a great game play together for him, 1686 01:09:46,040 --> 01:09:49,840 Speaker 13: keeping protected this last game, and he's been phenomenal. 1687 01:09:49,840 --> 01:09:51,519 Speaker 3: Man, I'm so proud of this kid. I do already 1688 01:09:51,600 --> 01:09:52,200 Speaker 3: know how to say it. 1689 01:09:52,600 --> 01:09:56,640 Speaker 12: I keep hearing from players, veteran players about his leadership qualities. 1690 01:09:56,880 --> 01:10:00,000 Speaker 12: I remember watching this last game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. 1691 01:10:00,080 --> 01:10:02,200 Speaker 12: It was in the third quarter with nine minutes thirty 1692 01:10:02,240 --> 01:10:03,360 Speaker 12: four seconds left. 1693 01:10:03,520 --> 01:10:06,280 Speaker 3: It was third and eight. He throws a dart. 1694 01:10:06,320 --> 01:10:08,759 Speaker 12: They blitz and he throws a dart to Nico Collins, 1695 01:10:08,800 --> 01:10:11,960 Speaker 12: his Nicos in the hands. He drops it and then 1696 01:10:11,960 --> 01:10:14,160 Speaker 12: I'm looking at CJ. And you know what he does. 1697 01:10:14,360 --> 01:10:16,519 Speaker 12: He goes up to Nico DAPs them up and it 1698 01:10:16,640 --> 01:10:18,360 Speaker 12: was real. You know a lot of guys that will 1699 01:10:18,400 --> 01:10:20,519 Speaker 12: do something for the camera, but he DAPs them up. 1700 01:10:20,560 --> 01:10:22,240 Speaker 12: I don't know what was said because I was watching 1701 01:10:22,280 --> 01:10:24,559 Speaker 12: it on the television, but you just got the sense 1702 01:10:24,600 --> 01:10:25,960 Speaker 12: that he was like, man, I'm gonna come back to 1703 01:10:26,000 --> 01:10:28,280 Speaker 12: you sooner or later before this game's over. And for 1704 01:10:28,360 --> 01:10:30,800 Speaker 12: a rookie to do that, you know, he didn't show 1705 01:10:31,000 --> 01:10:33,360 Speaker 12: We see some of the great quarterbacks they kind of, 1706 01:10:34,320 --> 01:10:36,320 Speaker 12: you know, show up the wide receivers with their body 1707 01:10:36,400 --> 01:10:38,560 Speaker 12: language after a play like that. He went up to 1708 01:10:38,640 --> 01:10:40,400 Speaker 12: him dap them up, and you could tell he says 1709 01:10:40,400 --> 01:10:42,559 Speaker 12: something to the effect of, don't worry, I'm gonna go. 1710 01:10:42,600 --> 01:10:42,920 Speaker 3: Back to you. 1711 01:10:43,000 --> 01:10:45,040 Speaker 13: Yeah, But that's just him. He just like I said, 1712 01:10:45,040 --> 01:10:47,559 Speaker 13: he's just a phenomenal leader. The good thing is he's 1713 01:10:47,600 --> 01:10:50,400 Speaker 13: been in the quarterback position at Ohio State, man is 1714 01:10:50,400 --> 01:10:53,760 Speaker 13: one of the most scrutinized positions in the country when 1715 01:10:53,800 --> 01:10:57,080 Speaker 13: it comes to your level of play, your the expectations 1716 01:10:57,120 --> 01:10:58,960 Speaker 13: that they have for you. So I knew he would 1717 01:10:58,960 --> 01:11:00,920 Speaker 13: be able to handle all of that type of stuff. 1718 01:11:01,439 --> 01:11:02,960 Speaker 13: Like I said, I was just curious to see if 1719 01:11:02,960 --> 01:11:04,280 Speaker 13: he was going to be able to get out here 1720 01:11:04,640 --> 01:11:07,439 Speaker 13: and do it with that NFL pass rush. As you know, 1721 01:11:07,880 --> 01:11:09,799 Speaker 13: we know a lot of guys that are great in college, 1722 01:11:09,840 --> 01:11:11,320 Speaker 13: but then get to that league and it's a whole 1723 01:11:11,400 --> 01:11:13,840 Speaker 13: new ball game with that pass rush. So I'm just 1724 01:11:14,120 --> 01:11:16,960 Speaker 13: I'm excited about his future and he just has to 1725 01:11:17,040 --> 01:11:19,840 Speaker 13: continue to stay humble and continue to get better and 1726 01:11:19,920 --> 01:11:22,240 Speaker 13: better and better every single day, which I know he will. 1727 01:11:22,439 --> 01:11:26,120 Speaker 13: He's not satisfied. He still hasn't won that big game yet. 1728 01:11:26,520 --> 01:11:29,120 Speaker 13: He lost to the team up North twice, lost to 1729 01:11:29,160 --> 01:11:32,840 Speaker 13: Georgia and a heartbreaker. Get that Super Bowl over here 1730 01:11:32,880 --> 01:11:34,479 Speaker 13: soon down the line. That's what I think the big 1731 01:11:34,479 --> 01:11:38,280 Speaker 13: one gonna be for. He deserved one. Yeah, yeah, he 1732 01:11:38,320 --> 01:11:41,040 Speaker 13: deserved one. He deserved one. Great kid like this with 1733 01:11:41,120 --> 01:11:44,600 Speaker 13: the word that he deserved one. Meet him, of course. 1734 01:11:44,720 --> 01:11:46,839 Speaker 3: Up there or here. I met him here, I met 1735 01:11:46,920 --> 01:11:47,599 Speaker 3: him a couple of times. 1736 01:11:47,600 --> 01:11:50,000 Speaker 13: Okay, yeah, But did I met him and his parents 1737 01:11:50,080 --> 01:11:52,080 Speaker 13: at Ohio State at the spring game a couple of 1738 01:11:52,160 --> 01:11:54,080 Speaker 13: years ago? Okay, yeah, So I go up there for 1739 01:11:54,160 --> 01:11:56,040 Speaker 13: spring game or one game a year. 1740 01:11:56,640 --> 01:11:59,360 Speaker 12: So is there that ohiose brotherhood or is it such 1741 01:11:59,360 --> 01:12:02,400 Speaker 12: a big pro you know, like us Rice Boys. Yeah, 1742 01:12:02,439 --> 01:12:04,920 Speaker 12: if you see someone from Rice, it is love already. 1743 01:12:05,080 --> 01:12:07,240 Speaker 13: No, it's definitely there, but you gotta be in Columbus, 1744 01:12:07,240 --> 01:12:08,760 Speaker 13: Ohio to get it. You know, a lot of the 1745 01:12:08,800 --> 01:12:11,520 Speaker 13: guys still live in Columbus, and there's a huge fraternity 1746 01:12:11,560 --> 01:12:14,200 Speaker 13: there now when it comes to fan fare, and you know, 1747 01:12:14,240 --> 01:12:16,880 Speaker 13: we have alumni everywhere you go, so there's a huge 1748 01:12:16,880 --> 01:12:18,280 Speaker 13: alumni here Arizona. 1749 01:12:18,360 --> 01:12:21,400 Speaker 3: We have a huge alumni base. So we can get 1750 01:12:21,439 --> 01:12:22,639 Speaker 3: the Buckeyes wherever we are. 1751 01:12:22,760 --> 01:12:25,280 Speaker 12: Okay, Okay, I want to ask you about running backs 1752 01:12:25,280 --> 01:12:28,200 Speaker 12: because obviously that's the position you played, and there was 1753 01:12:28,240 --> 01:12:31,559 Speaker 12: a lot of news that's past offseason about running backs 1754 01:12:31,560 --> 01:12:34,360 Speaker 12: feeling like they're not getting their due with NFL contracts. 1755 01:12:34,600 --> 01:12:37,439 Speaker 12: Just want to get your take on that. Yeah, I 1756 01:12:37,520 --> 01:12:39,640 Speaker 12: definitely agree with the running backs. I think you have 1757 01:12:39,680 --> 01:12:41,519 Speaker 12: to have a phenomenal running back to be a good 1758 01:12:41,520 --> 01:12:42,400 Speaker 12: football team, a. 1759 01:12:42,320 --> 01:12:43,240 Speaker 3: Great a great team. 1760 01:12:43,320 --> 01:12:45,519 Speaker 13: I think you need a running back that can run 1761 01:12:45,520 --> 01:12:48,200 Speaker 13: the ball when you need to run the football in 1762 01:12:48,240 --> 01:12:51,600 Speaker 13: the playoffs, bad weather, whatever it may be. Sometimes you 1763 01:12:51,680 --> 01:12:53,760 Speaker 13: gotta line up and run the power eye. No matter 1764 01:12:53,760 --> 01:12:55,599 Speaker 13: everybody knows that. You still got to have a running 1765 01:12:55,640 --> 01:12:57,479 Speaker 13: back to go out there and get those jaws, move 1766 01:12:57,560 --> 01:13:00,160 Speaker 13: the chains, get those first downs, and those guys a 1767 01:13:00,200 --> 01:13:02,200 Speaker 13: lot of punishment, man, you know what I'm saying. So 1768 01:13:02,479 --> 01:13:04,559 Speaker 13: by the time they get out of their first contract 1769 01:13:04,600 --> 01:13:07,799 Speaker 13: and you're looking at three or four years now, everybody 1770 01:13:07,840 --> 01:13:10,559 Speaker 13: devaluing them at that point. So how do you really 1771 01:13:10,640 --> 01:13:12,599 Speaker 13: get out of that unless you get your money coming in. 1772 01:13:12,680 --> 01:13:14,920 Speaker 13: I don't know how they escape this. I don't know 1773 01:13:14,920 --> 01:13:17,000 Speaker 13: how they going to escape it. Okay, put you on 1774 01:13:17,040 --> 01:13:19,720 Speaker 13: the other side, Jonathan Wells. You're the general manager of 1775 01:13:19,800 --> 01:13:22,760 Speaker 13: said team. You have a running back that balled out 1776 01:13:22,840 --> 01:13:23,800 Speaker 13: for four years. 1777 01:13:24,080 --> 01:13:26,920 Speaker 12: You look at the data and typically when because it's 1778 01:13:26,920 --> 01:13:29,160 Speaker 12: the most violent position on the football field. Yes, so 1779 01:13:29,200 --> 01:13:32,360 Speaker 12: when running backs fall off, it's a steep falloff. Are 1780 01:13:32,360 --> 01:13:35,720 Speaker 12: you signing him to a long term, multi million dollar deal? 1781 01:13:36,800 --> 01:13:40,080 Speaker 12: Don't take your heart out of it. That's why I'm 1782 01:13:40,120 --> 01:13:40,800 Speaker 12: thinking about that. 1783 01:13:40,920 --> 01:13:45,280 Speaker 13: I mean, I'm treating him like every other position in 1784 01:13:45,320 --> 01:13:48,320 Speaker 13: the National Football League, which is what you get paid 1785 01:13:48,320 --> 01:13:51,000 Speaker 13: for what you did. You get paid for what you did. 1786 01:13:51,400 --> 01:13:53,960 Speaker 13: Everybody who gets their big contract does not turn out 1787 01:13:54,000 --> 01:13:56,640 Speaker 13: and go ball out. No, you pay me for the 1788 01:13:56,680 --> 01:13:59,040 Speaker 13: work that I've done on the field. So if I've 1789 01:13:59,040 --> 01:14:02,000 Speaker 13: been your heartbeat, your heart and soul for the last 1790 01:14:02,000 --> 01:14:04,240 Speaker 13: three to four years, you should pay me for the 1791 01:14:04,280 --> 01:14:05,479 Speaker 13: work that I've done like you do. 1792 01:14:05,479 --> 01:14:07,519 Speaker 3: Every other position. That's how I feel. 1793 01:14:08,040 --> 01:14:11,759 Speaker 12: I think the only way around it, in my opinion, 1794 01:14:12,280 --> 01:14:15,120 Speaker 12: to try to satisfy both sides, the business side of 1795 01:14:15,160 --> 01:14:18,080 Speaker 12: it and the respect side of it. You signed these 1796 01:14:18,160 --> 01:14:21,000 Speaker 12: running backs to extensions earlier. You know what I'm saying, 1797 01:14:21,040 --> 01:14:23,840 Speaker 12: like after two years, because I mean, we're seeing it 1798 01:14:23,840 --> 01:14:26,559 Speaker 12: with Derrick Henry. I mean, Dereck Henry is I'm not 1799 01:14:26,560 --> 01:14:29,000 Speaker 12: even gonna say it was. I'd be too disrespectful, is 1800 01:14:29,000 --> 01:14:32,000 Speaker 12: a stone cold beast, but his production is dropped off 1801 01:14:32,320 --> 01:14:34,400 Speaker 12: because he's playing the most violent position in the game. 1802 01:14:34,479 --> 01:14:37,040 Speaker 13: Yeah, you ran him five hundred times. Now you don't 1803 01:14:37,080 --> 01:14:38,800 Speaker 13: want to plan. Now you don't want to pay him. 1804 01:14:39,280 --> 01:14:42,040 Speaker 13: You ran them five hundred times a year. But the 1805 01:14:42,080 --> 01:14:45,400 Speaker 13: business side, the business side is you ran me five 1806 01:14:45,479 --> 01:14:48,080 Speaker 13: hundred times a year, pay me for my work. 1807 01:14:48,520 --> 01:14:50,080 Speaker 12: Okay, you're gonna hate this, but I want to get 1808 01:14:50,120 --> 01:14:52,519 Speaker 12: your take on it. If I'm a general manager, I'm 1809 01:14:52,600 --> 01:14:55,639 Speaker 12: running my running back five hundred times a year, getting 1810 01:14:55,680 --> 01:14:58,760 Speaker 12: all the production, and when his contracts up, I'll tag 1811 01:14:58,840 --> 01:15:01,439 Speaker 12: him once and then I'll say thanks for everything you did. 1812 01:15:02,200 --> 01:15:05,439 Speaker 12: Peace out. Hey, that sounds like a jerk move, but no, listen, 1813 01:15:05,560 --> 01:15:07,240 Speaker 12: that's the position that they're in exact. 1814 01:15:07,360 --> 01:15:10,759 Speaker 13: So until don't I don't know the answer for the guys, 1815 01:15:10,800 --> 01:15:11,479 Speaker 13: I really don't. 1816 01:15:11,520 --> 01:15:13,400 Speaker 3: I wish I did. I don't know the answer. 1817 01:15:14,400 --> 01:15:16,479 Speaker 13: Sounds like a lot of them are coming together and 1818 01:15:16,520 --> 01:15:19,880 Speaker 13: starting to talk about this as a group, so that 1819 01:15:19,920 --> 01:15:21,679 Speaker 13: could lead to something interesting down the line. 1820 01:15:21,680 --> 01:15:24,040 Speaker 12: So I don't know. What did the Texans have to 1821 01:15:24,080 --> 01:15:26,720 Speaker 12: do to keep this winning streak going? This week? With 1822 01:15:26,840 --> 01:15:28,519 Speaker 12: the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town. 1823 01:15:29,240 --> 01:15:29,400 Speaker 3: Well. 1824 01:15:29,479 --> 01:15:31,920 Speaker 13: Number One, we're gonna have to avoid this injury bug 1825 01:15:31,960 --> 01:15:34,559 Speaker 13: that we've been having early in the year. Number Two, 1826 01:15:34,720 --> 01:15:37,519 Speaker 13: the guys that are in there, they've shown them, They've 1827 01:15:37,520 --> 01:15:40,840 Speaker 13: shown us and themselves that hey, they can go out 1828 01:15:40,840 --> 01:15:43,479 Speaker 13: there and win a football game on Sunday. So now 1829 01:15:43,920 --> 01:15:45,760 Speaker 13: that level of play that you brought to the game 1830 01:15:45,840 --> 01:15:48,360 Speaker 13: last week, you gotta up at two times this week. 1831 01:15:48,680 --> 01:15:51,200 Speaker 13: That's what you gotta do. This is your opportunity. You 1832 01:15:51,240 --> 01:15:54,200 Speaker 13: were a backup, you were at home some of y'all. 1833 01:15:54,200 --> 01:15:57,439 Speaker 13: You know whatever, Man, it's your time to shine. Man, 1834 01:15:57,479 --> 01:16:00,639 Speaker 13: step up, learn to playbook and play great football. That's 1835 01:16:00,640 --> 01:16:02,280 Speaker 13: what we need to be doing right now to keep winning. 1836 01:16:02,760 --> 01:16:03,360 Speaker 3: You good at this. 1837 01:16:03,920 --> 01:16:06,360 Speaker 12: Do you have a platform on social media where you're 1838 01:16:06,400 --> 01:16:08,320 Speaker 12: talking about games or YouTube? 1839 01:16:08,680 --> 01:16:10,080 Speaker 3: Where can they go to check you out? 1840 01:16:10,680 --> 01:16:12,679 Speaker 13: Y'all can check in with me man on Jay Wells 1841 01:16:12,720 --> 01:16:16,479 Speaker 13: Media group on Instagram. I just started going live after 1842 01:16:16,680 --> 01:16:18,640 Speaker 13: every Texan game that I've been doing this for like 1843 01:16:18,720 --> 01:16:21,200 Speaker 13: five years. After as soon as the Ohio State games 1844 01:16:21,240 --> 01:16:23,680 Speaker 13: go off, I go live on my Facebook. So I've 1845 01:16:23,720 --> 01:16:26,639 Speaker 13: been going crazy over there for years after every Buckeye game. 1846 01:16:26,960 --> 01:16:29,639 Speaker 13: This is my second time going live after the Texan 1847 01:16:29,680 --> 01:16:32,160 Speaker 13: game last week. But I'm gonna 1850 01:16:36,760 --> 01:16:39,320 Speaker 13: be bringing some more live content to the table asap 1851 01:16:39,920 --> 01:16:40,439 Speaker 13: next time. 1852 01:16:40,320 --> 01:16:40,760 Speaker 3: We come here. 1853 01:16:40,800 --> 01:16:43,400 Speaker 12: You gotta go live on the OG podcast so they 1854 01:16:43,400 --> 01:16:45,880 Speaker 12: can check you out. And let's do with all these 1855 01:16:45,960 --> 01:16:49,200 Speaker 12: dimes that you're dropping. Congratulations, Hall of Fame, appreciate you 1856 01:16:49,240 --> 01:16:50,240 Speaker 12: both for your high school. 1857 01:16:50,240 --> 01:16:51,720 Speaker 3: And that's a big school even I've heard of that. 1858 01:16:51,800 --> 01:16:53,880 Speaker 13: Yeah, well you know it's a small school, but we're 1859 01:16:53,920 --> 01:16:55,439 Speaker 13: big in status and talent. 1860 01:16:55,600 --> 01:16:58,160 Speaker 12: Yeah, absolutely, yeah, Like name some of the guys that 1861 01:16:58,200 --> 01:17:00,479 Speaker 12: have gone through. Honestly, we don't have a bunch to NFL. 1862 01:17:00,479 --> 01:17:02,559 Speaker 12: We got Joe McKnight, who was the number one recruited 1863 01:17:02,600 --> 01:17:05,679 Speaker 12: in the world ever. Yeah, Joe McKnight running back, Chris Howard, 1864 01:17:05,760 --> 01:17:09,200 Speaker 12: my OG player for the demo Broncos. 1865 01:17:09,560 --> 01:17:11,760 Speaker 13: Yeah, he went to USC exactly. So you know, we 1866 01:17:11,840 --> 01:17:13,720 Speaker 13: we've had some guys come out of there. Man, But 1867 01:17:13,760 --> 01:17:16,040 Speaker 13: we just we just played good team football, you know 1868 01:17:16,080 --> 01:17:17,800 Speaker 13: what I mean. So that's why I take more pride 1869 01:17:17,840 --> 01:17:20,320 Speaker 13: in it, because we don't have all this talent that 1870 01:17:20,360 --> 01:17:23,160 Speaker 13: people say we recruit and all of this. I'm like, bro, 1871 01:17:23,240 --> 01:17:25,200 Speaker 13: look at this starting offense right here. We ran through 1872 01:17:25,240 --> 01:17:27,880 Speaker 13: everybody who is where the recruit said, ain't nobody on 1873 01:17:27,920 --> 01:17:30,519 Speaker 13: the recruited. So you know, it's just a lot of 1874 01:17:30,520 --> 01:17:32,719 Speaker 13: haters out there in Louisiana when it comes to twenty 1875 01:17:32,720 --> 01:17:34,840 Speaker 13: eight championships and I get it. But all you gotta 1876 01:17:34,840 --> 01:17:36,559 Speaker 13: do is put that hand in the dirt and stop us. 1877 01:17:36,880 --> 01:17:40,799 Speaker 13: We only run three plays. We run the vier. Huh 1878 01:17:40,840 --> 01:17:42,559 Speaker 13: we run three plays. Stop them. 1879 01:17:42,600 --> 01:17:45,240 Speaker 12: So your coach, who is about to be the winningst 1880 01:17:45,240 --> 01:17:48,439 Speaker 12: coach in the history of high school football, Yes, only 1881 01:17:48,560 --> 01:17:51,559 Speaker 12: runs three plays. Basically, yeah, we run the veer. We 1882 01:17:51,600 --> 01:17:55,240 Speaker 12: went might pass the ball four five times a game? Maybe, Yeah, 1883 01:17:55,320 --> 01:17:56,680 Speaker 12: straight down your throat, stop it. 1884 01:17:57,000 --> 01:17:58,120 Speaker 3: That's discipline right. 1885 01:17:57,960 --> 01:18:02,320 Speaker 2: There, discipline with the capitol, no doubt stands for n D. 1886 01:18:02,600 --> 01:18:05,280 Speaker 2: Thank you and Dy and of course thank you Jonathan Wells. 1887 01:18:05,400 --> 01:18:09,240 Speaker 2: Next up, it's time for one of my favorite segments 1888 01:18:09,280 --> 01:18:11,960 Speaker 2: that we do all year long, when Marv Vannimer catches 1889 01:18:12,080 --> 01:18:14,679 Speaker 2: up with the voice of the opposing squad this week. 1890 01:18:14,720 --> 01:18:18,000 Speaker 2: This week it's the Venera Ball Bill Hill Grove. That's 1891 01:18:18,000 --> 01:18:21,880 Speaker 2: next the Texans All Access. Yeah, sir, Welcome back to Wednesday, 1892 01:18:21,920 --> 01:18:24,879 Speaker 2: Nation of Texans All Access from the Hundaie Texans Radio Studio. 1893 01:18:24,960 --> 01:18:28,040 Speaker 1: I am John Harris, your host, Football Southlund reporter. 1894 01:18:28,400 --> 01:18:31,439 Speaker 2: Looking forward to kind of getting through this week so 1895 01:18:31,439 --> 01:18:32,960 Speaker 2: we can get the Sunday. So excited to see this 1896 01:18:33,000 --> 01:18:36,880 Speaker 2: team play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Only something about set 1897 01:18:36,920 --> 01:18:39,400 Speaker 2: Pittsburgh on the other sideline. I've not been out of 1898 01:18:39,439 --> 01:18:43,880 Speaker 2: the field for a win over Pittsburgh fourteen on Monday Night. 1899 01:18:44,160 --> 01:18:44,800 Speaker 1: Blew that one. 1900 01:18:44,840 --> 01:18:46,439 Speaker 2: They had about a twenty three point run in the 1901 01:18:46,439 --> 01:18:48,759 Speaker 2: second quarter that put us to sleep, and then twenty 1902 01:18:48,840 --> 01:18:51,759 Speaker 2: seventeen was a disaster at the end of the season. 1903 01:18:51,800 --> 01:18:53,439 Speaker 2: Twenty twenty was the COVID game. We actually had a 1904 01:18:53,520 --> 01:18:56,240 Speaker 2: lead but couldn't hold it in the fourth quarter. James 1905 01:18:56,240 --> 01:18:58,000 Speaker 2: Connor at a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter 1906 01:18:58,040 --> 01:18:59,200 Speaker 2: and beat it. So I've not been down here to 1907 01:18:59,200 --> 01:19:01,240 Speaker 2: beat the Steelers. In fact, last time to beat the 1908 01:19:01,240 --> 01:19:05,920 Speaker 2: Steelers was twenty eleven, twelve years ago. And who was 1909 01:19:05,960 --> 01:19:10,240 Speaker 2: a rookie on that team, Jj Watt. He will be recognized, 1910 01:19:10,760 --> 01:19:14,920 Speaker 2: recognized yes on Sunday as he goes into the Ring 1911 01:19:15,120 --> 01:19:22,240 Speaker 2: of Honor alongside founder Bob McNair and the goat Andre Johnson. 1912 01:19:22,280 --> 01:19:23,920 Speaker 2: So got that to look forward to you on Sunday. 1913 01:19:23,920 --> 01:19:25,720 Speaker 2: But I just want to see this team play against 1914 01:19:25,760 --> 01:19:29,040 Speaker 2: the Steelers. And of course JJ brother JJ's brother TJ. 1915 01:19:29,160 --> 01:19:29,439 Speaker 3: Watt. 1916 01:19:29,479 --> 01:19:32,240 Speaker 2: Speaking of Steelers, man who knows them pretty well. He 1917 01:19:32,320 --> 01:19:34,759 Speaker 2: calls their game each and every week. It's Bill Hillgrove. 1918 01:19:35,200 --> 01:19:37,680 Speaker 2: Mark Vanny had a chance catch up with him. It's 1919 01:19:37,760 --> 01:19:39,479 Speaker 2: men behind the mics, Mark tell your way. 1920 01:19:39,720 --> 01:19:42,320 Speaker 4: Joining us now in Texans Radio. It's the voice of 1921 01:19:42,320 --> 01:19:45,320 Speaker 4: the Pittsburgh Steelers, longtime voice Bill Hillgrove. 1922 01:19:45,360 --> 01:19:46,800 Speaker 7: Bill, great to visit with you again. 1923 01:19:46,880 --> 01:19:49,559 Speaker 1: How's it going on, my friend, It's going very well. 1924 01:19:49,720 --> 01:19:51,720 Speaker 14: You know, we have the week shortened a little bit 1925 01:19:51,800 --> 01:19:55,479 Speaker 14: by an interesting plane flight from Vegas to Pittsburgh by 1926 01:19:55,520 --> 01:19:57,120 Speaker 14: way of Kansas City. 1927 01:19:57,680 --> 01:19:59,960 Speaker 4: Now, were you on the plane the whole time? During 1928 01:20:00,160 --> 01:20:02,160 Speaker 4: the delay, were you guys able to go to a hotel? 1929 01:20:02,200 --> 01:20:04,200 Speaker 4: I know it's easier said than done with an entire 1930 01:20:04,240 --> 01:20:05,120 Speaker 4: football operation. 1931 01:20:05,960 --> 01:20:10,080 Speaker 14: Here's this thing. First of all, there's no TSA, and 1932 01:20:10,640 --> 01:20:13,280 Speaker 14: the pilot said we're gonna sit on the airplane because 1933 01:20:13,280 --> 01:20:15,400 Speaker 14: we have food and bemvers. They don't in the terminal. 1934 01:20:16,160 --> 01:20:19,200 Speaker 14: So there was no way to get out of there 1935 01:20:19,240 --> 01:20:22,479 Speaker 14: and get back depending on when the plane from Atlanta 1936 01:20:22,520 --> 01:20:24,599 Speaker 14: got there. So we sat there on a dark, quiet 1937 01:20:24,600 --> 01:20:29,320 Speaker 14: airplane for probably more than five hours. But you know, 1938 01:20:29,360 --> 01:20:31,719 Speaker 14: Mike Tomlin dealt with it very well. Yesterday he says, 1939 01:20:31,760 --> 01:20:35,160 Speaker 14: non issue. He said, some people took naps, and other 1940 01:20:35,200 --> 01:20:38,680 Speaker 14: people took naps and worked, and other people worked. And 1941 01:20:38,760 --> 01:20:41,360 Speaker 14: so you know, they got started on the Texans even 1942 01:20:41,400 --> 01:20:44,320 Speaker 14: though they were stuck in Kansas City for all that time. 1943 01:20:44,840 --> 01:20:47,160 Speaker 7: Amazing, amazing that you had to divert that way. 1944 01:20:47,240 --> 01:20:49,600 Speaker 4: Well, tell me about the team so far as you 1945 01:20:49,640 --> 01:20:52,360 Speaker 4: had the shaky start, But back to back wins, how's 1946 01:20:52,400 --> 01:20:53,160 Speaker 4: it going overall? 1947 01:20:53,160 --> 01:20:53,400 Speaker 7: Bill? 1948 01:20:53,400 --> 01:20:57,759 Speaker 14: In your opinion, Yeah, it's I think the arrows up. Certainly, 1949 01:20:57,800 --> 01:21:00,000 Speaker 14: the defense has won the day in their two wins, 1950 01:21:01,040 --> 01:21:05,960 Speaker 14: and you know, everything is relative in the National Football League. 1951 01:21:07,760 --> 01:21:11,519 Speaker 14: San Francisco was superior in all phases, and that's one 1952 01:21:11,560 --> 01:21:14,559 Speaker 14: of those games you just kind of threw out. Cleveland 1953 01:21:14,640 --> 01:21:18,639 Speaker 14: has probably the second best defense in the league, maybe 1954 01:21:18,680 --> 01:21:21,840 Speaker 14: the best, who knows, and the stealers were able to 1955 01:21:21,920 --> 01:21:26,839 Speaker 14: overcome that by pretty much trombling the offense of the Browns, 1956 01:21:26,880 --> 01:21:30,720 Speaker 14: and you know TJ. Watt and Alex high Smith, you know, 1957 01:21:30,760 --> 01:21:34,800 Speaker 14: they just they won the day in both the wins. 1958 01:21:35,160 --> 01:21:37,000 Speaker 7: Yeah, So tell me about t J. Watt. 1959 01:21:37,040 --> 01:21:39,679 Speaker 4: Obviously we're very familiar with his brother. He'll go into 1960 01:21:39,680 --> 01:21:43,280 Speaker 4: the Ring of Honor this Sunday. How about TJ? Overall, 1961 01:21:43,320 --> 01:21:45,639 Speaker 4: you've been covering him since he got into the league. 1962 01:21:45,680 --> 01:21:46,839 Speaker 7: He is a menace. 1963 01:21:47,560 --> 01:21:52,479 Speaker 14: He's quick, he's relentless. He studies film. You know some 1964 01:21:52,520 --> 01:21:56,439 Speaker 14: people watch film, he studies it. And you know he 1965 01:21:56,560 --> 01:22:00,679 Speaker 14: knows which hand to go after on the quarterback depending 1966 01:22:00,720 --> 01:22:05,800 Speaker 14: where the ball is. He just you know, he's got 1967 01:22:04,200 --> 01:22:10,599 Speaker 14: the mental approach as well as great physical skills and 1968 01:22:10,680 --> 01:22:13,080 Speaker 14: like I say, you know, his motor is constant. So 1969 01:22:13,960 --> 01:22:15,920 Speaker 14: he is one special guy to watch. 1970 01:22:16,240 --> 01:22:19,720 Speaker 4: Well, give me the snapshot on Alex Highsmith because he's 1971 01:22:19,720 --> 01:22:21,599 Speaker 4: impossible not to notice as well. 1972 01:22:22,000 --> 01:22:26,160 Speaker 14: He came into his own probably starting last year, and 1973 01:22:26,200 --> 01:22:28,600 Speaker 14: then this year has taken a step forward to the 1974 01:22:28,640 --> 01:22:31,280 Speaker 14: point where you know, they rewarded him with a pretty 1975 01:22:31,320 --> 01:22:34,599 Speaker 14: hefty contract and so far he's living up to it. 1976 01:22:34,640 --> 01:22:37,200 Speaker 14: And I think, you know, this presents a quandary for 1977 01:22:37,280 --> 01:22:41,439 Speaker 14: opposing offenses. Which way do you go. Do you chip 1978 01:22:41,479 --> 01:22:45,400 Speaker 14: on TJ and let Alex destroy it or vice versa? 1979 01:22:45,800 --> 01:22:48,080 Speaker 14: And I think that's a very good thing. They have 1980 01:22:48,120 --> 01:22:50,240 Speaker 14: a lot of meetings at the quarterback, let's put it 1981 01:22:50,280 --> 01:22:50,639 Speaker 14: that way. 1982 01:22:51,320 --> 01:22:55,040 Speaker 4: Yeah, I've noticed, And speaking of your quarterback Kenny Pickett, 1983 01:22:55,240 --> 01:22:56,400 Speaker 4: how is he progressing? 1984 01:22:56,439 --> 01:22:57,240 Speaker 7: It's year two. 1985 01:22:57,720 --> 01:23:00,200 Speaker 4: I know these things don't happen overnight, but what's the 1986 01:23:00,200 --> 01:23:03,000 Speaker 4: review of Kenny Pickett through three games in twenty twenty three. 1987 01:23:03,439 --> 01:23:06,080 Speaker 14: Having watched him at camp and also in the preseason, 1988 01:23:06,360 --> 01:23:10,760 Speaker 14: you could really see this step forward now against San 1989 01:23:10,760 --> 01:23:15,519 Speaker 14: Francisco and Cleveland. It wasn't there, but we saw signs 1990 01:23:15,560 --> 01:23:18,559 Speaker 14: of it coming back. As you know, the Steelers were 1991 01:23:18,600 --> 01:23:22,679 Speaker 14: able to outscore the Raiders and win that second game 1992 01:23:22,720 --> 01:23:26,040 Speaker 14: and tie for the top of the division. You know, 1993 01:23:26,400 --> 01:23:28,439 Speaker 14: like I said, everything in the league is relative, and 1994 01:23:28,520 --> 01:23:31,479 Speaker 14: I think the Steelers are handling a difficult part of 1995 01:23:31,479 --> 01:23:34,200 Speaker 14: their schedule I think pretty well. And like I say, 1996 01:23:34,240 --> 01:23:37,439 Speaker 14: the defense has carried them when the offense hasn't been there. 1997 01:23:37,439 --> 01:23:40,840 Speaker 14: But the offense is getting better. Their rushing was much 1998 01:23:40,840 --> 01:23:44,320 Speaker 14: more prominent against the Raiders, and again it may have 1999 01:23:44,360 --> 01:23:47,280 Speaker 14: been the Raiders defense. I don't know. You know, it's 2000 01:23:47,320 --> 01:23:50,760 Speaker 14: going to be interesting to see over the next couple 2001 01:23:50,840 --> 01:23:54,320 Speaker 14: of weeks how this plays out. The Steelers have to 2002 01:23:54,320 --> 01:23:56,320 Speaker 14: come to you guys and then have to host the 2003 01:23:56,360 --> 01:23:59,240 Speaker 14: Baltimore Ravens. So you know it's a work in progress, 2004 01:23:59,240 --> 01:24:00,479 Speaker 14: and let's see how develops. 2005 01:24:00,880 --> 01:24:03,920 Speaker 4: Legendary voice of the Steelers, Bill Hilgrove joining us. Bill, 2006 01:24:04,000 --> 01:24:06,880 Speaker 4: it blows my mind and I think everybody's that. In 2007 01:24:06,960 --> 01:24:09,960 Speaker 4: the Super Bowl era, you've had three head coaches of 2008 01:24:10,000 --> 01:24:12,880 Speaker 4: the franchise. And what do you attribute that to the 2009 01:24:12,960 --> 01:24:16,679 Speaker 4: stability of the Steelers. Obviously the performance has always been good, 2010 01:24:17,080 --> 01:24:19,720 Speaker 4: if not great. What do you think of it? Is 2011 01:24:19,720 --> 01:24:22,160 Speaker 4: it the family ownership? How do you see it? 2012 01:24:22,280 --> 01:24:28,040 Speaker 14: I think the Rooney style is what prevails. I remember 2013 01:24:28,160 --> 01:24:32,320 Speaker 14: when Mike Tomlin was a candidate and one of the 2014 01:24:32,360 --> 01:24:34,720 Speaker 14: former Steelers went to Dan Rooney and said, why don't 2015 01:24:34,720 --> 01:24:37,320 Speaker 14: you hire Joe Green. He's got coaching experience, He's a 2016 01:24:37,360 --> 01:24:41,200 Speaker 14: Steelers legend. And Dan said, let me tell you something. 2017 01:24:42,000 --> 01:24:46,000 Speaker 14: Let's look at Chuck Nole. A fine assistant, a sharp assistant, 2018 01:24:47,400 --> 01:24:51,120 Speaker 14: no baggage, no head coaching experience, snow things to learn 2019 01:24:51,200 --> 01:24:55,439 Speaker 14: or unlearn. We're going to hire assistants who are top 2020 01:24:55,520 --> 01:24:58,400 Speaker 14: notch and give them time to learn how to be 2021 01:24:58,520 --> 01:25:02,240 Speaker 14: head coaches. I think you've seen that in every single instance, 2022 01:25:02,280 --> 01:25:06,200 Speaker 14: from Noel to Cower, certainly to Tomlin, and I think 2023 01:25:06,280 --> 01:25:08,840 Speaker 14: he's going to probably put a gold jacket on one day. 2024 01:25:10,120 --> 01:25:10,320 Speaker 3: Bill. 2025 01:25:10,439 --> 01:25:14,680 Speaker 4: You worked with the legendary Myron Cope and he's credited 2026 01:25:14,800 --> 01:25:18,360 Speaker 4: with making the Terrible towel. And these towels are so 2027 01:25:18,439 --> 01:25:20,720 Speaker 4: familiar to people today, but a lot of people might 2028 01:25:20,760 --> 01:25:23,400 Speaker 4: not remember much about Myron Cope. What can you share 2029 01:25:23,439 --> 01:25:25,920 Speaker 4: with us about Myron and being in the booth with them. 2030 01:25:26,360 --> 01:25:29,519 Speaker 14: Well, the boss called him in and said, Myron, you know, 2031 01:25:29,600 --> 01:25:34,080 Speaker 14: we got to have more closer identity with Steelers fans, 2032 01:25:34,640 --> 01:25:36,960 Speaker 14: and we got to come up with a gimmick. And 2033 01:25:37,040 --> 01:25:40,400 Speaker 14: Cope said, I'm not a gimmick guy. And the boss said, well, 2034 01:25:40,479 --> 01:25:43,839 Speaker 14: your contracts up in January. He goes, I'm all ears. 2035 01:25:44,280 --> 01:25:47,320 Speaker 14: He said, we have to have something to you know, 2036 01:25:48,080 --> 01:25:51,080 Speaker 14: that the fans can have to make them more a 2037 01:25:51,160 --> 01:25:54,840 Speaker 14: part of what's going on here. And Coke came up 2038 01:25:54,880 --> 01:25:57,600 Speaker 14: with the idea. He said, well, everybody has a towel, 2039 01:25:57,960 --> 01:26:00,800 Speaker 14: how about a black or gold towel and they can 2040 01:26:00,840 --> 01:26:03,639 Speaker 14: wave it and oh, okay, this is a good idea. 2041 01:26:04,120 --> 01:26:06,160 Speaker 14: And they came up with the idea of the Terrible 2042 01:26:06,240 --> 01:26:10,080 Speaker 14: towel and Cope himself, and he's the only person who 2043 01:26:10,080 --> 01:26:13,240 Speaker 14: could have sold this to the Steelers nation. He's the 2044 01:26:13,320 --> 01:26:17,800 Speaker 14: only person. He wasn't sure until lind Swan came out 2045 01:26:17,800 --> 01:26:20,120 Speaker 14: of the tunnel against I believe it was a Baltimore 2046 01:26:20,120 --> 01:26:24,240 Speaker 14: Colts in a playoff game in seventy five where you know, 2047 01:26:25,200 --> 01:26:27,200 Speaker 14: he was waving the towel and all of a sudden 2048 01:26:27,200 --> 01:26:30,160 Speaker 14: the crowd responded, and Cope said, well, I think we 2049 01:26:30,280 --> 01:26:33,439 Speaker 14: got something here. And interestingly, Myron, you know, gave a 2050 01:26:33,479 --> 01:26:37,400 Speaker 14: percentage to the Allegheny Valley School, which is where his 2051 01:26:37,479 --> 01:26:43,040 Speaker 14: son was was was it is still there, and now 2052 01:26:43,600 --> 01:26:46,160 Speaker 14: you know they've donated the towel to that school, and 2053 01:26:46,200 --> 01:26:50,040 Speaker 14: that school has realized over eight million dollars. So it 2054 01:26:50,080 --> 01:26:52,920 Speaker 14: was it was quite a thing. And you know, Twinch 2055 01:26:52,960 --> 01:26:56,280 Speaker 14: said it best. A lot of places have towels and 2056 01:26:56,320 --> 01:26:59,120 Speaker 14: they waved them. He said, yeah, they're for free, he said. 2057 01:26:59,160 --> 01:27:02,719 Speaker 14: Steeler fans pay ten bucks for their towel and most 2058 01:27:02,760 --> 01:27:06,040 Speaker 14: of that ten dollars goes to the autism school. 2059 01:27:06,880 --> 01:27:09,840 Speaker 4: That's awesome. Bill Hillgrove, voice of the Steelers, joining us. 2060 01:27:09,920 --> 01:27:12,400 Speaker 4: You're a Pittsburgh native, so you grew up in the 2061 01:27:12,439 --> 01:27:15,800 Speaker 4: city as a sports fan, Give me your favorite non 2062 01:27:15,960 --> 01:27:19,759 Speaker 4: Steeler Pittsburgh athlete from when you were a kid, maybe 2063 01:27:19,920 --> 01:27:21,599 Speaker 4: or all time, however you see it. 2064 01:27:22,120 --> 01:27:25,000 Speaker 14: Okay, grew up a baseball fan, played it better than 2065 01:27:25,040 --> 01:27:27,880 Speaker 14: any sport, had a ball field near my house, spent 2066 01:27:28,040 --> 01:27:31,640 Speaker 14: the morning till night there, and honestly, Ralph Kiner was 2067 01:27:31,680 --> 01:27:35,559 Speaker 14: my boyhood hero. And I cried the day they traded 2068 01:27:35,640 --> 01:27:37,559 Speaker 14: him to the Cubs. Now, little did I know that 2069 01:27:37,680 --> 01:27:41,040 Speaker 14: his back was bad and that you know, the Steeler, 2070 01:27:41,240 --> 01:27:44,880 Speaker 14: this steel The Pirates probably stole some players from the 2071 01:27:44,920 --> 01:27:48,719 Speaker 14: Cubs as a result. I believe the Pirates got about 2072 01:27:48,720 --> 01:27:52,320 Speaker 14: five or six players in exchange for Kiner. And interestingly, 2073 01:27:53,120 --> 01:27:56,360 Speaker 14: he was traded during a doubleheader, so he wore a 2074 01:27:56,400 --> 01:27:59,519 Speaker 14: Pirate uniform the first game and then came out in 2075 01:27:59,600 --> 01:28:03,519 Speaker 14: that uniform and that's when I cried. But you know, 2076 01:28:03,600 --> 01:28:04,320 Speaker 14: he was my hero. 2077 01:28:04,840 --> 01:28:05,040 Speaker 7: Well. 2078 01:28:05,080 --> 01:28:08,519 Speaker 4: I love the setting there along the Three Rivers of 2079 01:28:09,000 --> 01:28:13,280 Speaker 4: the stadium of where the Pirates play, and I think 2080 01:28:13,280 --> 01:28:16,519 Speaker 4: it's just gorgeous. But when Three Rivers Stadium went away, 2081 01:28:16,920 --> 01:28:19,559 Speaker 4: was there sort of the sentimental oh no, it's going away, 2082 01:28:19,720 --> 01:28:20,559 Speaker 4: or oh yeah. 2083 01:28:20,400 --> 01:28:22,599 Speaker 7: We're ready for some new stuff. How did people see 2084 01:28:22,600 --> 01:28:23,400 Speaker 7: it at the time? Bill. 2085 01:28:24,160 --> 01:28:26,680 Speaker 14: I think there was a lot of sentiment attached to 2086 01:28:26,720 --> 01:28:30,519 Speaker 14: that place. Let's face it, four Super Bowls were won there. 2087 01:28:31,280 --> 01:28:35,439 Speaker 14: Probably the last of the dynasties, true dynasties in the 2088 01:28:35,560 --> 01:28:38,200 Speaker 14: NFL played there, and so there was a lot of 2089 01:28:38,280 --> 01:28:42,320 Speaker 14: sentiment that disappeared when they wrecked the place. But you know, 2090 01:28:42,640 --> 01:28:45,559 Speaker 14: time marches on, time waits for no one, and it 2091 01:28:45,600 --> 01:28:48,599 Speaker 14: was time for a new stadium, and the Steelers are 2092 01:28:48,680 --> 01:28:53,479 Speaker 14: very content with what was Heinzfield now Akroschure Stadium. You know, 2093 01:28:53,520 --> 01:28:56,519 Speaker 14: you got to live with the times, and that's exactly 2094 01:28:56,560 --> 01:28:58,120 Speaker 14: what the Steeler fans adjusted to. 2095 01:28:58,840 --> 01:29:02,320 Speaker 4: I know this is before your time broadcasting Steelers games, 2096 01:29:02,400 --> 01:29:05,160 Speaker 4: but this is Houston and we have a lot of 2097 01:29:05,200 --> 01:29:10,280 Speaker 4: people who still celebrate the AFC Championship game appearances of 2098 01:29:10,360 --> 01:29:13,320 Speaker 4: the Oilers against the Steelers in the late seventies, the 2099 01:29:13,360 --> 01:29:16,080 Speaker 4: Love You Blue era, as it's called. And I know 2100 01:29:16,160 --> 01:29:18,960 Speaker 4: Dan Pastorini and a bunch of those players, Robert Brazil, 2101 01:29:19,000 --> 01:29:21,760 Speaker 4: I just saw him yesterday at a Lombardi event. What 2102 01:29:21,800 --> 01:29:24,679 Speaker 4: can you share with us about the way they felt 2103 01:29:24,800 --> 01:29:27,920 Speaker 4: and thought of the Oilers back then, because it was 2104 01:29:27,960 --> 01:29:30,960 Speaker 4: a tremendous challenge. I know the Steelers beat them in 2105 01:29:31,000 --> 01:29:33,840 Speaker 4: those AFC championship games. But what can you tell me 2106 01:29:33,880 --> 01:29:34,920 Speaker 4: about those days? 2107 01:29:35,479 --> 01:29:37,960 Speaker 14: Well, one of the images that comes up in my 2108 01:29:38,120 --> 01:29:41,799 Speaker 14: head is Bradshaw taking that slide in the end zone 2109 01:29:42,400 --> 01:29:47,680 Speaker 14: on that really cold, freezing rain type day and you know, 2110 01:29:47,720 --> 01:29:50,760 Speaker 14: the spray kicked up and he scored a touchdown. And 2111 01:29:51,080 --> 01:29:53,800 Speaker 14: I remember after the game, I go into the locker 2112 01:29:53,880 --> 01:29:57,080 Speaker 14: room and I'm looking for Bradshaw and I said, where's Terry. Well, 2113 01:29:57,280 --> 01:30:01,280 Speaker 14: he's in He's in the sauna bath trying to warm up, 2114 01:30:01,680 --> 01:30:04,240 Speaker 14: and I think he's drinking whiskey and I went what 2115 01:30:05,120 --> 01:30:07,240 Speaker 14: And sure enough he comes out and he said, Bill, 2116 01:30:07,280 --> 01:30:09,679 Speaker 14: I'll do the interview, but if I slur any words, 2117 01:30:10,120 --> 01:30:12,840 Speaker 14: we're going to have to kill it. Well he did fine, 2118 01:30:13,800 --> 01:30:15,880 Speaker 14: and we put that on the air and it was 2119 01:30:16,439 --> 01:30:19,200 Speaker 14: all good, but it was a bone chilling day. And 2120 01:30:19,600 --> 01:30:22,679 Speaker 14: that's my memory of that. And also, you know bum 2121 01:30:22,680 --> 01:30:24,840 Speaker 14: Phillips saying one of these days, we're going to kick 2122 01:30:24,880 --> 01:30:27,720 Speaker 14: that door in. You know, he was one of my 2123 01:30:27,760 --> 01:30:32,400 Speaker 14: favorite characters, and I nick the Steelers respected the Oilers 2124 01:30:32,880 --> 01:30:36,000 Speaker 14: and maybe to a degree, feared that that was the 2125 01:30:36,040 --> 01:30:39,519 Speaker 14: team that could take away their legacy. But fortunately for 2126 01:30:39,600 --> 01:30:41,799 Speaker 14: the Black and gold side of things that never happened. 2127 01:30:42,240 --> 01:30:44,679 Speaker 4: Finally, Bill, your thoughts on the Texans. I know we're 2128 01:30:44,680 --> 01:30:47,839 Speaker 4: not completely a kickoff yet and game prep still underway, 2129 01:30:47,960 --> 01:30:50,040 Speaker 4: but what do you think from AFAR looking at the 2130 01:30:50,080 --> 01:30:51,960 Speaker 4: Houston Texans heading into this matchup? 2131 01:30:52,439 --> 01:30:54,479 Speaker 14: Amazing young team. 2132 01:30:54,720 --> 01:30:55,000 Speaker 1: C J. 2133 01:30:55,200 --> 01:30:59,720 Speaker 14: Stroud is mature beyond his years. You got the terminator 2134 01:30:59,760 --> 01:31:01,439 Speaker 14: on the defensive side of the ball. 2135 01:31:02,520 --> 01:31:02,720 Speaker 3: You know. 2136 01:31:03,800 --> 01:31:07,360 Speaker 14: CJ hasn't been sacked yet and is what sixth in 2137 01:31:07,400 --> 01:31:11,800 Speaker 14: the conference in pass efficiency rating. You know, I don't 2138 01:31:11,800 --> 01:31:13,680 Speaker 14: think they run the ball to the point where they 2139 01:31:13,720 --> 01:31:16,280 Speaker 14: want to. That may be one of the keys for 2140 01:31:16,360 --> 01:31:19,400 Speaker 14: this game on Sunday, because the Steelers did a much 2141 01:31:19,400 --> 01:31:22,479 Speaker 14: better job stopping they run against the Raiders than they 2142 01:31:22,479 --> 01:31:26,600 Speaker 14: did against Cleveland or certainly San Francisco. And when you 2143 01:31:26,680 --> 01:31:31,479 Speaker 14: look at that again, everything is relative. Before he got hurt, 2144 01:31:31,560 --> 01:31:35,519 Speaker 14: Nick Chubb might have been the best ball carrier in 2145 01:31:35,520 --> 01:31:39,960 Speaker 14: the league, and before that McCaffrey might be the best. 2146 01:31:40,000 --> 01:31:42,639 Speaker 14: You know. I mean, they face two great running backs 2147 01:31:43,000 --> 01:31:46,479 Speaker 14: and you know, mister Peters is a load. But I 2148 01:31:46,479 --> 01:31:47,880 Speaker 14: think that's going to be one of the keys to 2149 01:31:47,920 --> 01:31:50,720 Speaker 14: the game if they can put everything on CJ and 2150 01:31:50,760 --> 01:31:54,120 Speaker 14: make him one dimensional, then the advantage goes to TJ 2151 01:31:54,280 --> 01:31:56,439 Speaker 14: One and Alex Heismith. So I think it's going to 2152 01:31:56,479 --> 01:31:56,680 Speaker 14: be a. 2153 01:31:56,600 --> 01:31:59,280 Speaker 4: Fun game, all right, Bill, Well, we appreciate the time, 2154 01:31:59,320 --> 01:32:02,040 Speaker 4: as always looked forward to seeing you on Sunday, and 2155 01:32:02,080 --> 01:32:04,120 Speaker 4: we thank you so much for visiting today. 2156 01:32:04,360 --> 01:32:06,880 Speaker 14: More than welcome. Let's do it again now. 2157 01:32:06,880 --> 01:32:08,920 Speaker 1: That would be really cool if Mark and Bill were 2158 01:32:08,960 --> 01:32:09,479 Speaker 1: to talk again. 2159 01:32:09,520 --> 01:32:13,120 Speaker 2: That means the Texans and Steelers were meeting in the playoffs. 2160 01:32:13,479 --> 01:32:15,880 Speaker 1: That would be fun. But that's for down the road. 2161 01:32:15,960 --> 01:32:20,040 Speaker 2: As Rocky said, one step, one punch, one round at 2162 01:32:20,080 --> 01:32:20,559 Speaker 2: a time. 2163 01:32:20,720 --> 01:32:21,960 Speaker 1: He told Creed that and. 2164 01:32:21,920 --> 01:32:25,000 Speaker 2: It paid off, not against pretty Ricky Conlin, but definitely 2165 01:32:25,080 --> 01:32:27,360 Speaker 2: against younger Drago in Creed two. 2166 01:32:27,680 --> 01:32:30,080 Speaker 1: It definitely helped. So just keep that in mind. 2167 01:32:30,120 --> 01:32:33,240 Speaker 2: Just one step, one punch, one round at a time, 2168 01:32:33,960 --> 01:32:36,240 Speaker 2: one game on Sunday. You take it one at a time, 2169 01:32:36,280 --> 01:32:38,439 Speaker 2: and hopefully this team will get better and get a 2170 01:32:38,479 --> 01:32:41,040 Speaker 2: win at home. But it's been a while since they've 2171 01:32:41,040 --> 01:32:43,479 Speaker 2: had a win, even longer since they, as Landry Locker 2172 01:32:43,479 --> 01:32:45,679 Speaker 2: said today, even longer said they had a winning streak 2173 01:32:45,680 --> 01:32:47,520 Speaker 2: when he had a couple in a row. In fact, 2174 01:32:47,880 --> 01:32:50,200 Speaker 2: trying to think of when the win oh, I know, 2175 01:32:50,240 --> 01:32:50,640 Speaker 2: and it was. 2176 01:32:50,680 --> 01:32:50,880 Speaker 14: It was. 2177 01:32:51,040 --> 01:32:51,760 Speaker 1: It was twenty twenty. 2178 01:32:51,800 --> 01:32:54,040 Speaker 2: It was beating the Patriots on a Sunday, turning around 2179 01:32:54,120 --> 01:32:56,880 Speaker 2: a few days later beating the Lions. Lost every game 2180 01:32:56,920 --> 01:33:00,639 Speaker 2: the rest of that year, and then twenty one. They've 2181 01:33:00,640 --> 01:33:03,559 Speaker 2: won seven games after that. So this would be a 2182 01:33:03,560 --> 01:33:05,760 Speaker 2: good opportunity to kind of get a street going and 2183 01:33:06,120 --> 01:33:09,080 Speaker 2: to establish home field advantage again. 2184 01:33:09,160 --> 01:33:10,679 Speaker 1: So get in your seats and beat loud. 2185 01:33:10,680 --> 01:33:12,800 Speaker 2: All right, got a little bit to do to finish 2186 01:33:12,840 --> 01:33:14,960 Speaker 2: up this Wednesday Show's go around the NFL hit the 2187 01:33:14,960 --> 01:33:15,920 Speaker 2: injury report as well. 2188 01:33:15,960 --> 01:33:17,240 Speaker 1: Right here in Texans All Access. 2189 01:33:20,320 --> 01:33:22,600 Speaker 2: We got one follow segment this Wednesday edition of Texans 2190 01:33:22,640 --> 01:33:26,040 Speaker 2: All Access as we get ready for the Steelers on Sunday. 2191 01:33:26,200 --> 01:33:29,960 Speaker 2: JJ Watt Day on Sunday as well, It's gonna be 2192 01:33:29,960 --> 01:33:32,479 Speaker 2: a rocket in RG Stadium. Hopefully you guys are there 2193 01:33:32,520 --> 01:33:34,960 Speaker 2: early and share in the festivities. 2194 01:33:35,040 --> 01:33:37,080 Speaker 1: Let's dive into this injury report for the Texans. 2195 01:33:37,760 --> 01:33:39,479 Speaker 2: I don't know that I've ever seen a year where 2196 01:33:39,479 --> 01:33:43,639 Speaker 2: I've seen so many hand injuries Josh Jones, Denzel Perrimid, 2197 01:33:43,680 --> 01:33:46,880 Speaker 2: Tybrier Thomas, and of course Titus Howard before but those 2198 01:33:46,880 --> 01:33:51,639 Speaker 2: three DMPs today at practice that's not great news because 2199 01:33:51,760 --> 01:33:55,599 Speaker 2: Josh Jones was on the DNP list, as was Larry Tunseel. 2200 01:33:55,600 --> 01:33:58,479 Speaker 2: And it sounds as if Laramie will not play this weekend. 2201 01:33:58,840 --> 01:34:01,479 Speaker 2: More likely joshnap this weekend. I mean, that's two more 2202 01:34:01,520 --> 01:34:04,280 Speaker 2: tackles down. You're already down. Charlie Heck and Titus. 2203 01:34:03,920 --> 01:34:07,120 Speaker 1: Howard hey Man. Oh and by the way, t J. 2204 01:34:07,240 --> 01:34:09,040 Speaker 1: Watt and Alex Heighsmith come to town. You. 2205 01:34:09,880 --> 01:34:13,160 Speaker 2: Oh and by the way, George Fan was a limited participant, 2206 01:34:13,640 --> 01:34:15,240 Speaker 2: but his was not injury related. 2207 01:34:15,280 --> 01:34:15,960 Speaker 1: It was a rest day. 2208 01:34:16,040 --> 01:34:18,200 Speaker 2: Was also a rest day for Robert Woods, for Tank 2209 01:34:18,280 --> 01:34:22,760 Speaker 2: Dell and for Jimmy Ward. Limited participants John Grenard deal 2210 01:34:22,800 --> 01:34:25,479 Speaker 2: with the knee, Shaq Griffin a foot shack, Mason ankle, 2211 01:34:25,600 --> 01:34:27,960 Speaker 2: Jaen Petrie Chess was good to see. Jalen Back does 2212 01:34:28,000 --> 01:34:30,280 Speaker 2: sound and he talked in the locker room. It sounds 2213 01:34:30,280 --> 01:34:32,680 Speaker 2: like he is going to play this weekend now. 2214 01:34:32,720 --> 01:34:35,200 Speaker 1: The Steelers just as banged up. 2215 01:34:35,600 --> 01:34:40,040 Speaker 2: James Daniels, Groin Presley, Harvind Punter dealing with a hamstring, 2216 01:34:40,040 --> 01:34:43,000 Speaker 2: Connor Heywood their kind of weapon X their their answer 2217 01:34:43,040 --> 01:34:46,559 Speaker 2: to Andrew Beck dealing with the ankle. Chikwuma a court 2218 01:34:46,640 --> 01:34:50,320 Speaker 2: for elbow and Patrick Peterson Isaac say Mole were resting 2219 01:34:50,800 --> 01:34:54,240 Speaker 2: Alan Robinson ankle earlier, Larry Ogunjobi a foot, so both 2220 01:34:54,240 --> 01:34:55,679 Speaker 2: teams banged up. 2221 01:34:56,040 --> 01:34:56,639 Speaker 1: To a degree. 2222 01:34:57,080 --> 01:34:58,960 Speaker 2: A little bit more for the Texans, I would think, 2223 01:34:59,120 --> 01:35:03,400 Speaker 2: because you're talking about now potentially Josh Jones dealing with 2224 01:35:03,439 --> 01:35:05,439 Speaker 2: that hand issue, so we'll see, but he was not 2225 01:35:05,479 --> 01:35:09,480 Speaker 2: at practice today. A lot of hand issues, my goodness. 2226 01:35:10,000 --> 01:35:13,520 Speaker 1: The injuries have piled up. But after this week eligible 2227 01:35:13,600 --> 01:35:14,200 Speaker 1: to come back. 2228 01:35:14,800 --> 01:35:18,400 Speaker 2: Meet Drew Scruggs, Cam Johnston and Titus Howard in a 2229 01:35:18,439 --> 01:35:21,639 Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Charlie Heck could could and is eligible 2230 01:35:21,640 --> 01:35:24,400 Speaker 2: to come up p up, I believe, so that would help, 2231 01:35:24,520 --> 01:35:25,519 Speaker 2: to say the least. 2232 01:35:25,560 --> 01:35:27,519 Speaker 1: All right, that's gonna do it for the show tonight. 2233 01:35:27,680 --> 01:35:30,439 Speaker 2: A lot of people to thank Nick Casserio, Tank Out, 2234 01:35:30,479 --> 01:35:34,840 Speaker 2: Deep City, Mark Vandermir, Drew Doherty, Bill Hillgrove, Indie Kalu 2235 01:35:34,920 --> 01:35:37,240 Speaker 2: and Jonathan Wells and all of you guys for listening. 2236 01:35:37,280 --> 01:35:39,000 Speaker 1: All my guys back at six ten.
