So this is the new frontier of corruption. How is that not criminal? I mean, 1:15:53.760 --> 1:15:55.479 is there some kind of carve out here that he 1:15:55.520 --> 1:15:58.160 was abusing or is this just people don't know about it? And the problem is, Buck, We've 1:16:19.280 --> 1:16:22.160 got disclosure laws in our country, but they don't deal 1:16:22.280 --> 1:16:25.479 with this kind of corruption. So you know, take Joe 1:16:25.520 --> 1:16:28.559 Biden when he's vice president, he has to disclose you know, 1:16:28.640 --> 1:16:31.960 a thousand dollar campaign contribution. If he's got a thousand 1:16:32.040 --> 1:16:35.040 dollars in g E stock, he needs to disclose that too. 1:16:35.240 --> 1:16:38.479 But if his son scores a billion dollar deal from 1:16:38.479 --> 1:16:41.559 a foreign government, that's not required to be disclosed. So 1:16:41.600 --> 1:16:43.559 one of the things I call for is we've got 1:16:43.560 --> 1:16:47.040 to have transparency on the kinds of deals that family 1:16:47.080 --> 1:16:51.360 members of politicians are engaging in with foreign governments. Don't 1:16:51.479 --> 1:16:55.679 that doesn't that apply for spouses because I remember when 1:16:55.720 --> 1:17:00.800 the former governor of Virginia, Bob McDonald, was brought up 1:17:00.840 --> 1:17:05.600 not on state but federal corruption charges, eventually throw overturned 1:17:06.200 --> 1:17:08.960 by the Supreme Court, by the way, for everyone listening, um. 1:17:09.040 --> 1:17:10.519 And at the time, I said, it looked like they 1:17:10.520 --> 1:17:14.960 were overreaching. They went after his wife for accepting gifts 1:17:15.320 --> 1:17:17.719 as though she were a public official guilty of corruption 1:17:17.760 --> 1:17:20.320 to although she held no office. Yeah. No, that's that's 1:17:20.320 --> 1:17:23.759 a great point, buck. They are mirroring that they are doing 1:21:49.840 --> 1:21:52.759 that in the United States and seeking out commercial ties 1:21:53.200 --> 1:21:56.320 with the family members of American politicians and hoping that 1:21:56.400 --> 1:21:59.120 it's going to bend or shape our policy in a 1:21:59.160 --> 1:22:02.200 more favorable direct for themselves. This would all have to 1:22:02.280 --> 1:22:06.200 be prosecuted by d O J anti corruption, Is that right? 1:22:06.240 --> 1:22:10.120 I mean? Who does this? Who could do something about this? But a lot of Americans 1:26:01.160 --> 1:26:04.320 don't understand is that income taxes make up less than 1:26:04.400 --> 1:26:08.360 half of our personal tax burden. There are hidden taxes 1:26:08.479 --> 1:26:12.440 embedded in nearly everything we do, every bill, we pay, 1:26:12.479 --> 1:26:16.760 every activity, every purchase. So I wrote, how do I 1:26:16.960 --> 1:26:20.559 tax be? To expose all of the other ways that 1:26:20.800 --> 1:26:23.800 various levels of government are siphoning money out of our 1:26:23.800 --> 1:26:26.920 bank accounts in the city coffers, All right, give us 1:26:26.920 --> 1:26:30.400 some of the most egregious ones. Well, I think the 1:26:30.439 --> 1:26:33.880 most offensive are probably the taxes in our cell phone 1:26:33.960 --> 1:26:38.000 and electric bills. Just because almost everybody needs to have 1:26:38.160 --> 1:26:42.200 those services, So it's something that affects everybody. In New 1:26:42.280 --> 1:26:47.680 York City, which is where we live, there's uh taxes 1:26:47.720 --> 1:26:51.280 on electric bills. That's a huge amount of money, UH, 1:26:51.280 --> 1:26:54.200 and the taxes are not being put to good use. 1:26:54.680 --> 1:26:57.680 For example, in every electric bill, there's something called a 1:26:57.840 --> 1:27:01.360 nine one one fee. Well would assume that a nine 1:27:01.439 --> 1:27:05.720 one fee would go towards emergency services, right, Well, that's 1:27:05.720 --> 1:27:07.559 what they used to go to. And the fees were 1:27:07.560 --> 1:27:10.760 created in the ninety nineties and then upgrades to the 1:27:11.080 --> 1:27:14.280 to the emergency services were completed, but they kept the 1:27:15.120 --> 1:27:18.280 fees in the electric bills and now they're just funneled 1:27:18.320 --> 1:27:20.680 into the general fund where the city or state can 1:27:20.720 --> 1:27:23.400 spend it however they please. So there are lots of 1:27:23.439 --> 1:27:27.520 these fees that make up twenty percent of our electric bills. Likewise, 1:27:27.600 --> 1:27:32.559 cell phone bills are about seven percent taxes, And again 1:27:32.840 --> 1:27:36.120 the taxes are not usually put to good use. They're 1:27:36.160 --> 1:27:39.519 usually funneled into general funds. So I would say that 1:27:39.560 --> 1:27:42.759 those are the most offensive just because they affect everyone. 1:27:42.840 --> 1:27:45.280 And of course these taxes hurt the poor more than 1:27:45.320 --> 1:27:47.880 they hurt the rich. But then there are like weird 1:27:47.960 --> 1:27:51.160 hidden taxes too that may not be as costly, but 1:27:51.560 --> 1:27:55.559 they're just sort of weird, like, for example, pet license fees. 1:27:56.240 --> 1:27:58.880 Do you have a dog, buck, My parents do, so 1:27:58.920 --> 1:28:01.960 they pay a pet license fee. That's just wrong when 1:28:02.000 --> 1:28:05.040 you when you when you adopt a dog, you have 1:28:05.160 --> 1:28:07.439 to pay this thing to the government called a pet 1:28:07.479 --> 1:28:11.599 license fee, and you kind of assume that the fee 1:28:11.640 --> 1:28:15.519 goes towards something to help animals, like animal shelters or something, 1:28:15.920 --> 1:28:18.880 but really it's just the penalty for saving a dog. 1:28:20.000 --> 1:28:24.519 That's terrible. They're penalizing you for saving a pup. Pup, yes, 1:28:24.600 --> 1:28:27.040 and every year you have to renew this license. And 1:28:27.080 --> 1:28:30.080 you know what's crazy. If you don't renew your pet 1:28:30.120 --> 1:28:33.400 license fee, in most parts of the country, it's a misdemeanor. 1:28:33.520 --> 1:28:37.200 So there are real stories of people being arrested for 1:28:37.280 --> 1:28:40.360 refusing to renew their pet license. I feel like, if 1:28:40.400 --> 1:28:42.320 I had a pet wallaby, maybe I gotta pay a 1:28:42.360 --> 1:28:45.000 license just because I'm I'm you know, I'm skating outside 1:28:45.000 --> 1:28:47.479 the edges a little bit. But but saving a pet 1:28:47.520 --> 1:28:49.760 puppy to me, that's like what you're story. And I 1:28:49.800 --> 1:28:52.240 say puppy just meaning any dog. But I feel like 1:28:52.240 --> 1:28:54.479 We're always told that, you know, adopt, don't shopping all 1:28:54.520 --> 1:28:57.680 that stuff. Well, the government's taking a penny out of 1:28:57.680 --> 1:29:00.880 your pocket whether you adopt or shop. Right, And in 1:29:00.920 --> 1:29:04.240 most parts of the country, the money from the pet 1:29:04.280 --> 1:29:07.000 license fee does not go towards helping dogs. It does 1:29:07.040 --> 1:29:08.920 in some parts of the country, but in most it 1:29:09.000 --> 1:29:13.719 does not. It's actually 1:29:54.439 --> 1:29:57.600 far more than that. So the Heartland Institute did a 1:29:57.640 --> 1:30:01.080 study that showed when you add the ELF taxes to 1:30:01.160 --> 1:30:05.519 your income tax the average American is paying around fifty 1:30:05.640 --> 1:30:08.240 percent of their income to the government. Now, of course 1:30:08.280 --> 1:30:11.839 that can vary greatly. Some people don't pay income taxes 1:30:11.880 --> 1:30:14.840 because they get their earned income tax credits. But for 1:30:14.920 --> 1:30:17.960 the average American, they're paying about half of what they 1:30:18.000 --> 1:30:21.439 make to the government. And this should really terrify people 1:30:21.520 --> 1:30:24.600 back because think about it. If the government is profiting 1:30:24.640 --> 1:30:27.040 more off of your labor than you are, I mean, 1:30:27.080 --> 1:30:30.559 that's socialism right there. And how do we fix it? Christie, 1:30:30.600 --> 1:30:33.040 We've all got about thirty seconds or so, but what's 1:30:33.080 --> 1:30:36.280 what's the quick version the elevator pitch to fix? Well, 1:30:36.360 --> 1:30:38.720 my book shows people how to kind of alter their 1:30:38.760 --> 1:30:42.000 spending habits to avoid some of these hidden taxes, because 1:30:42.000 --> 1:30:44.400 it is possible to save a little more money with 1:30:44.600 --> 1:30:47.400 different spending habits.
