Remember in high school, people around me, 0:05:02.800 --> 0:05:05.000 they would start out with small pain pills and then 0:05:05.000 --> 0:05:08.560 oxycott and hit and it was no longer recreational drug 0:05:08.640 --> 0:05:10.840 use that people would win at parties. You were seeing 0:05:10.839 --> 0:05:15.880 people become addicted very very very quickly. In two thousand 0:05:15.920 --> 0:05:18.120 and eight, Nikki started writing about the issue for a 0:05:18.160 --> 0:05:22.719 local newspaper. I started out covering the drug epidemic. I 0:05:22.800 --> 0:05:25.120 was the first in the area to do stories on 0:05:25.200 --> 0:05:28.800 oxycotton and looking at overdose rates in the area and 0:05:28.920 --> 0:05:32.279 started asking those questions from the corner's office about how 0:05:32.279 --> 0:05:34.760 many of these depths that we're seeing are connected to 0:05:35.000 --> 0:05:38.680 opiate use, And then started looking into pill mills and 0:05:38.720 --> 0:05:40.960 we ended up shutting down over twenty three pill mills 0:05:40.960 --> 0:05:46.039 Insider County. Nikki's reporting helped shut a light on the 0:05:46.080 --> 0:05:49.880 area's drug problem, but other illicit industries sprung up around it. 0:05:50.400 --> 0:05:53.799 Nikki was there to cover it all. He had 0:06:33.080 --> 0:06:37.039 his own firm in Portsmouth, and at one point in 0:06:37.120 --> 0:06:40.359 the late two thousands he got himself appointed as a 0:06:40.400 --> 0:06:44.320 city councilman of Portsmouth. He's a very public person, so 0:06:44.360 --> 0:06:46.800 if there was a Red Cross banquet or something that 0:06:46.880 --> 0:06:49.920 I was covering, he would be there. So he's been 0:06:49.960 --> 0:06:53.080 around my whole career pretty much. Now. Rumors have been 0:06:53.120 --> 0:06:56.680 circulating about Mike Moran for years. These stories about him 0:06:56.720 --> 0:06:59.560 being involved in prostitution go all the way back to 0:06:59.600 --> 0:07:02.240 thee than these. A lot of those stories are just 0:07:02.279 --> 0:07:07.120 about him hiring girls dance and at local parties and 0:07:07.440 --> 0:07:11.640 poker games. It was the secret that everyone choked about, 0:07:11.680 --> 0:07:14.600 but no one really talked about, and it was pretty 0:07:14.600 --> 0:07:17.560 common knowledge. I think I mentioned like a Red Cross 0:07:17.600 --> 0:07:21.280 banquet I had to cover once. He was there with 0:07:21.600 --> 0:07:24.480 a girl known to be arrested for prostitution, known to 0:07:24.480 --> 0:07:28.120 be arrested for drug abuse, and she was there. Nicky further explained the allegations 0:08:32.040 --> 0:08:35.160 leveled against Moran by area women at the corrupt of 0:08:35.160 --> 0:08:38.439 what he does is he offers his legal services to 0:08:38.480 --> 0:08:41.640 get these women out of jail and then puts them 0:08:41.720 --> 0:08:45.839 under his employee. Yes, he gets women out of jail, 0:08:46.200 --> 0:08:51.439 and that basically gets them into his clutches. Other stories 0:08:51.480 --> 0:08:55.200 are that people are hired as dog walkers or as 0:08:55.320 --> 0:09:01.880 cleaners and and said are actually working in prostitution, and 0:09:02.040 --> 0:09:05.200 affidavit filed by the DA would later support these accounts. 0:09:05.760 --> 0:09:09.040 James Pilcher explained that this method of manipulation marks the 0:09:09.080 --> 0:09:13.880 distinction between prostitution and human trafficking. Some people will say, oh, well, 0:09:13.880 --> 0:09:15.400 these women knew what they were doing, They were just 0:09:15.400 --> 0:09:19.520 trying to make money. These women were prostitutes. Well, if 0:09:19.559 --> 0:09:22.800 you talk to the experts, it went one step beyond that. 0:09:23.000 --> 0:09:26.440 It went into trafficking. Because some of those allegations Moran 0:09:26.679 --> 0:09:29.160 was holding over them, the fact that they were drug addicts, 0:09:29.200 --> 0:09:32.680 even he would withhold their money or withhold the wherewithal 0:09:32.720 --> 0:09:36.240 to get drugs. So the statute says, if you withhold 0:09:36.320 --> 0:09:39.520 or threatened to withhold money that women need for drugs 0:09:39.640 --> 0:09:43.160 or withhold the drugs, it's trafficking because it's coercion.
