Talk to me about the unique I guess 0:13:38.400 --> 0:13:42.160 position that black women and women of color are in 0:13:42.880 --> 0:13:48.160 right now since the overturning of Rov wade as at 0:13:48.160 --> 0:13:51.839 the close of the Supreme Courts session. And what are 0:13:51.880 --> 0:13:55.360 some of the experiences that you've been hearing about or 0:13:55.440 --> 0:13:59.640 that we're uplifted during that meeting. Yeah, I mean, you know, 0:13:59.720 --> 0:14:02.560 to be um on the on the kind of meta level, 0:14:02.679 --> 0:14:05.880 we know that these bands that we've seen over the years, 0:14:06.160 --> 0:14:10.720 abortion bands have disproportionately impacted Black women, in particular, people 0:14:10.720 --> 0:14:13.920 of color, people with low incomes, rural communities, and we 0:14:14.000 --> 0:14:17.520 are seeing many of these bands introduced in states with 0:14:17.559 --> 0:14:21.080 the highest maternal mortality rate, right, so also an issue 0:14:21.120 --> 0:14:25.520 that significantly disproportionately impacts black women. And so you know, 0:14:25.520 --> 0:14:27.880 I think we start there and just the nexus of 0:14:28.040 --> 0:14:32.320 how sexual and reproductive healthcare bands and restrictions impact our 0:14:32.320 --> 0:14:36.080 bodies and control over our bodies and our freedoms. Then 0:14:36.120 --> 0:14:39.280 you add a layer on to the criminalization and the 0:14:39.360 --> 0:14:42.640 surveillance that is increasing with respect to these bands. Some 0:14:42.720 --> 0:14:45.720 of them are being enforced by this you know, unique 0:14:45.720 --> 0:14:48.680 bounty hunter provision that was part of the civil right 0:14:48.720 --> 0:14:51.880 of action that came out of the Texas x SB 0:14:52.040 --> 0:14:56.680 eight UM van and fiasco last year. UM. And and 0:14:56.760 --> 0:15:01.640 now with row overturned. UM, we you know the we 0:15:01.680 --> 0:15:05.440 could see felony convictions right um from for providers up 0:15:05.440 --> 0:15:08.520 to ninety nine years UM. But you know also for 0:15:08.560 --> 0:15:11.520 people who support people who get access to care out 0:15:11.520 --> 0:15:14.800 of state. And you know, the opposition has introduced everything 0:15:14.880 --> 0:15:18.280 from uh you know, saying it it shouldn't be legal 0:15:18.360 --> 0:15:20.960 to cross state lines in order to get access to cares, 0:15:20.960 --> 0:15:24.640 literally holding people hostage in their state, UM, so that 0:15:24.680 --> 0:15:27.760 they are not able to get access to abortion care. UM. 0:15:27.800 --> 0:15:30.840 You know, people worried about the long drives they're taking. 0:15:30.960 --> 0:15:35.000 We are seeing people drive an average four hundred miles 0:15:35.000 --> 0:15:38.840 outside of their state to get access and lonely right 0:15:38.880 --> 0:15:42.000 because they are afraid to tell anyone what is going on, 0:15:42.040 --> 0:15:45.480 because they don't want to you know, um, implicate anyone 0:15:45.480 --> 0:15:48.120 else in their decision if it if it may cause 0:15:48.160 --> 0:15:51.720 them harm. UM. And we also recognize the fact that 0:15:52.120 --> 0:15:56.160 if criminal prosecutions move forward, as you know what one 0:15:56.200 --> 0:15:58.600 would have to right, if they're going to actually enforce 0:15:58.680 --> 0:16:02.200 these laws, you know, that could also impact and create 0:16:02.280 --> 0:16:06.440 voter disenfranchisement. Right, it could impact you know, one's ability 0:16:06.440 --> 0:16:10.040 to get access to housing, access to medicaid, and so 0:16:10.080 --> 0:16:13.520 the ripple effect into public policy from from the kind 0:16:13.560 --> 0:16:17.080 of healthcare harms that people are experiencing, I think is 0:16:17.160 --> 0:16:22.400 just really great. Um. And you know, a significant challenge 0:16:22.440 --> 0:16:25.120 for us to be thinking about. And because of that, 0:16:25.240 --> 0:16:28.680 I think that's why these communities coming together made such 0:16:28.680 --> 0:16:32.080 a powerful statement. Last I would just add that, you know, 0:16:32.200 --> 0:16:35.600 so many reproductive rights organizations, including mine, you know, we 0:16:35.640 --> 0:16:38.640 are now being led by by black women or women 0:16:38.640 --> 0:16:42.400 of color, and so the opportunity to really sit at 0:16:42.440 --> 0:16:45.120 the center kind of of who we are along with 0:16:45.160 --> 0:16:47.880 the Vice president I was just an incredibly powerful moment. 0:16:49.160 --> 0:16:51.520 You know, there's been a lot of critique about the 0:16:51.560 --> 0:16:56.640 Biden administration and they're handling of this issue. There had 0:16:56.640 --> 0:16:59.480 been pushed back from abortion activists about the fact that 0:16:59.520 --> 0:17:03.200 the president and hadn't uttered the word abortion. Um. There 0:17:03.280 --> 0:17:07.240 has been pushed back in general about Democrats and their 0:17:07.400 --> 0:17:10.800 inability to wrap their arms fully around this issue. It 0:17:10.880 --> 0:17:14.479 was always you know, abortion should be you know, safe 0:17:14.560 --> 0:17:18.720 and rare, right. Um. And you know, we have moved 0:17:18.720 --> 0:17:21.040 to a place where we understand that abortion is just 0:17:21.119 --> 0:17:26.119 a necessary part of care. We're hearing terrible stories about 0:17:26.920 --> 0:17:32.480 partially formed fetuses that are being left inside of of 0:17:32.480 --> 0:17:37.240 of of a uterus because they can't be aborted. Right. Um. 0:17:37.320 --> 0:17:42.240 Do you think that this administration, when we knew, when 0:17:42.280 --> 0:17:44.480 we thought that the built with that the that the 0:17:45.080 --> 0:17:51.120 decision was a draft, that they took enough proactive action. Um. 0:17:51.320 --> 0:17:54.560 And do you think that they have arrived at this 0:17:54.640 --> 0:17:57.880 place and recognizing that Republicans are not going to let 0:17:57.920 --> 0:18:03.439 this issue sit. Yes. And look, I think like, uh, 0:18:03.440 --> 0:18:06.760 like the party's entire evolution on this issue, right. They ken to 0:18:42.760 --> 0:18:46.040 help people mitigate the concerns while we fight back. UM. 0:18:46.240 --> 0:18:48.840 So you know, a good example, as you just mentioned 0:18:48.840 --> 0:18:53.040 the the emergency medical UM you know, uh, you know, 0:18:53.240 --> 0:18:58.000 UM support in the danger of the parents life.
