But Impacts had this incredible partnership 0:01:02.400 --> 0:01:04.720 with the National Bar where we did forty end or 0:01:04.720 --> 0:01:08.480 forty nation's best advocates celebrating young lawyers, trying to figure 0:01:08.480 --> 0:01:12.080 out an on ramp for young black attorneys to be 0:01:12.240 --> 0:01:15.840 connected to some of the greatest legal minds in the country, 0:01:16.160 --> 0:01:18.440 black legal minds in the country, and we did that 0:01:18.520 --> 0:01:21.520 for several years, and at some point that relationship between 0:01:21.560 --> 0:01:24.920 Impacts in the National Bar kind of came to a 0:01:25.000 --> 0:01:27.679 head and we were no longer a part of nation's 0:01:27.720 --> 0:01:31.720 best advocates. The program, I'm proud to say, continues today. 0:01:32.240 --> 0:01:35.360 But there was a little bit of a law, and 0:01:35.400 --> 0:01:37.920 if I'm honest, the law was because at least my 0:01:37.959 --> 0:01:39.760 feelings were hurt. When we look 0:02:30.919 --> 0:02:34.200 at the amount of police violence, those who never separated 0:02:34.240 --> 0:02:38.120 themselves from vigilante, we can't even call it vigilante justice, 0:02:38.200 --> 0:02:42.080 vigilante injustice. When you look at all of the racist 0:02:42.160 --> 0:02:45.799 attacks that they are trying to codify in this country, 0:02:46.000 --> 0:02:48.600 when you look at the makeup of the Congress, of 0:02:48.680 --> 0:02:51.280 the House and the Senate, when you see the disparities 0:02:51.320 --> 0:02:54.359 that exist in our pay when you see the ways 0:02:54.400 --> 0:02:57.240 in which they've challenged whether or not black people deserve 0:02:57.320 --> 0:03:00.080 to be in jobs based on DEI, even if if 0:03:00.080 --> 0:03:03.480 you're not in a DEI job, When you see everything 0:03:03.520 --> 0:03:08.200 that's happening across the board, there is no choice but 0:03:08.240 --> 0:03:11.600 for us to lean into our gifts, lean into our talents, 0:03:11.880 --> 0:03:15.839 lean into what it means to build coalition. That's really the point. Sometimes our criticism ends up creating the 0:07:54.280 --> 0:08:01.080 thing that dismantles our organizations, that takes out some of 0:08:01.080 --> 0:08:03.960 our strongest allies. But I'm thinking 0:08:08.920 --> 0:08:13.280 about Congresswoman Nancy Mace, who took it upon herself to 0:08:13.400 --> 0:08:17.920 introduce legislation to try to dismantle the Congressional Black Caucus. 0:08:18.160 --> 0:08:21.240 Congressional Black Caucus was founded in nineteen seventy one, right 0:08:21.280 --> 0:08:24.600 on the other side of a meeting with President Richard Nixon. 0:08:25.240 --> 0:08:28.480 They developed a document of sixty one recommendations that they 0:08:28.600 --> 0:08:32.680 believed almost demands that they believe would make life better 0:08:32.760 --> 0:08:39.000 for Black Americans. This organization isn't just about coming together 0:08:39.200 --> 0:08:41.959 and having lunch with people who look like you. It's 0:08:42.000 --> 0:08:45.240 also an organization that has been the lifeline, the heartbeat 0:08:45.280 --> 0:08:49.280 and the conscience of the Congress. This woman doesn't want 0:08:49.360 --> 0:08:53.320 the Congressional Black Caucus to exist, because the Congress wants 0:08:53.360 --> 0:08:56.840 to exist absent a conscience. When I was the Congressional Black Caucus Executive Director, 0:09:02.800 --> 0:09:05.640 I got emails on a weekly basis, sometimes daily, depending 0:09:05.640 --> 0:09:09.360 on Maden as y'all work for challenging President Barack Obama 0:09:09.360 --> 0:09:10.920 at the time. We didn't always agree, but we were 0:09:10.960 --> 0:09:14.040 still striving to get to the same end goal. Those 0:09:14.160 --> 0:09:18.800 emails would always question the relevance of the Caucus, whether 0:09:18.920 --> 0:09:22.480 or not it should exist. So congratulations the seeds.
