My 0:02:18.440 --> 0:02:23.320 experience with the Metro Transit police that detained me specifically, 0:02:23.600 --> 0:02:28.600 one officer named Sergeant Dial was that I was singled 0:02:28.639 --> 0:02:31.480 out from the rest of my group and I was 0:02:31.520 --> 0:02:38.960 brutalized and arrested. When I was pepper sprayed, they like 0:02:39.000 --> 0:02:41.680 subsequently poured water like all down the front of me, 0:02:42.280 --> 0:02:46.000 so like the pepper spray kind of like spread down 0:02:47.040 --> 0:02:55.280 to everything that you could imagine. The Black Papers process that we 0:13:22.320 --> 0:13:24.160 just went through with State of the People, there is 0:13:24.200 --> 0:13:28.120 a DC statehood paper for people who, just like Tip 0:13:28.200 --> 0:13:31.360 mentioned earlier, may not understand DC home rule and it 0:13:31.400 --> 0:13:34.040 why it matters. Can you speak to a little bit 0:13:34.080 --> 0:13:36.480 about why this is a fight for the whole of 0:13:36.559 --> 0:13:38.480 us and not just for the residents of DC. 0:13:39.360 --> 0:13:42.560 Absolutely, DC is an experimenting ground for like all the 0:13:42.600 --> 0:13:44.679 things they want us try to spread throughout the country. 0:13:45.360 --> 0:13:48.719 Because of our lack of statehood, you know, there are 0:13:48.760 --> 0:13:51.000 some ways where, especially even if you think about our 0:13:51.000 --> 0:13:53.760 budget process, like the mayor proposes are budget, the Council 0:13:53.840 --> 0:13:56.560 legislates the budget, votes on the budget, and then the 0:13:56.640 --> 0:13:59.720 Congress approves our budget most of the time. Most of 0:13:59.720 --> 0:14:02.520 the time, as for the most part, they've never really 0:14:02.679 --> 0:14:06.800 intervened with our affairs, but then we saw congressional interference 0:14:07.120 --> 0:14:11.120 in twenty twenty three with our criminal code. We've also 0:14:11.160 --> 0:14:14.360 seen some congressional interference around like our marijuana laws and 0:14:14.400 --> 0:14:17.840 like our ability to have shrooms recreationally, with things that 0:14:17.880 --> 0:14:21.680 were also voted on democratically thro valid initiative. So the 0:14:21.720 --> 0:14:24.920 issue of statehood for DC is so important because DC 0:14:25.160 --> 0:14:28.040 is no longer necessarily a majority black city. It's a 0:14:28.040 --> 0:14:31.720 polar plurality black city. It's about forty three to forty 0:14:31.720 --> 0:14:36.239 six percent black now, and it's also being rapidly gentrified. 0:14:36.360 --> 0:14:40.920 It's and a lot of that is because, like the 0:14:41.080 --> 0:14:48.200 Mayor does some she does some work throughout the year, 0:14:48.240 --> 0:14:51.840 but the Council really only has like seventy days to 0:14:51.920 --> 0:14:54.360 really look at a budget proposal in DC, and that's 0:14:54.360 --> 0:14:58.160 what's legislated in the Home Rule Act, So they only 0:14:58.200 --> 0:15:01.240 have seventy days to like really try to create an 0:15:01.320 --> 0:15:05.600 environment where transformative change could happen through a budget. And 0:15:05.640 --> 0:15:08.520 it's like severely stunted. So who you are mayor is 0:15:08.560 --> 0:15:13.040 in d C is very important because of that, and 0:15:13.120 --> 0:15:15.280 because we don't have like senators, we don't have like 0:15:15.600 --> 0:15:19.160 you know, we don't have real voting members in Congress. 0:15:19.520 --> 0:15:22.600 There are many things that directly affect DC.
