This is 0:01:43.240 --> 0:01:46.120 really important. Some of you have been hiding your shriveled 0:01:46.120 --> 0:01:48.960 hand for so long. You have become experts at hiding 0:01:48.960 --> 0:01:52.760 your shriveled hand. It is. It is part of your personality. 0:01:52.800 --> 0:01:56.600 It is part of how you operate. You block people out. 0:01:56.600 --> 0:02:00.120 You hold people out. You excuse. Why? You're comfortable 0:02:34.010 --> 0:02:38.130 coming to a Sunday morning gathering like this in a crowd, 0:02:39.050 --> 0:02:42.850 but you're very uncomfortable in a small group. You want 0:02:42.850 --> 0:02:46.930 to be anonymous. You want people to see what you 0:02:46.930 --> 0:02:50.890 want them to see, but you really don't want them 0:02:50.889 --> 0:02:56.370 to see that part of you that you're ashamed of. 0:02:57.970 --> 0:03:02.930 It works for your self-image. Image. But when you go 0:03:02.930 --> 0:03:06.970 to bed at night, there's a loneliness of your soul. 0:03:08.530 --> 0:03:12.649 There's a hollowness in your spirit. Because when you keep 0:03:12.650 --> 0:03:17.810 people away, it. Yeah, it protects you. But you were 0:03:17.810 --> 0:03:22.450 engineered and made. Made by God for community. You know, 0:03:22.490 --> 0:03:26.609 the Bible tells us in Proverbs chapter 28 verse 13, 0:03:27.250 --> 0:03:31.730 whoever conceals their sin does not prosper, but the one 0:03:31.730 --> 0:03:37.970 who confesses and renounces finds mercy. God cannot heal what 0:03:37.970 --> 0:03:43.130 you choose to conceal. You see, one of the first 0:03:44.290 --> 0:03:50.370 steps in experience and healing is when we stop concealing. 0:03:51.610 --> 0:03:53.850 And I believe that Jesus calls this man with a 0:03:53.850 --> 0:03:57.210 withered arm forward because he understood. Hey, if I'm going 0:03:57.250 --> 0:04:00.450 to heal you, you have to bring it to the light. 0:04:01.100 --> 0:04:04.820 Everybody has to see the withered ness of your hand. 0:04:05.540 --> 0:04:09.060 I cannot heal that which is hidden. I can only 0:04:09.100 --> 0:04:11.820 heal that which comes to the light, that which is exposed, 0:04:11.820 --> 0:04:14.220 that which is brought to the light. That's what I 0:04:14.220 --> 0:04:19.100 can begin to heal. Why is it so hard? Well, 0:04:19.100 --> 0:04:24.540 it's hard because it exposes deformity to others. He would 0:04:24.540 --> 0:04:29.659 be uncomfortable standing before a crowd and having people see why. 0:04:29.980 --> 0:04:32.860 Because when there's something that we we've struggled with, there's 0:04:32.860 --> 0:04:35.979 something that we're very aware of. It becomes bigger in 0:04:35.980 --> 0:04:39.740 our mind than it is to others. And we feel 0:04:39.740 --> 0:04:42.779 like our entire being will be judged by that part 0:04:42.779 --> 0:04:48.380 of us that will be labeled, that the entirety of 0:04:48.380 --> 0:04:54.180 our persona will be judged. When Jesus said to this 0:04:54.180 --> 0:04:56.780 withered the man with the withered hand, stand up! He 0:04:56.779 --> 0:05:00.540 had a choice to make. Do I run? Do I 0:05:00.620 --> 0:05:04.380 walk out? Do I hide? Do I say no way? 0:05:06.300 --> 0:05:08.740 He had a moment. A moment where he's wrestling with 0:05:08.740 --> 0:05:12.460 his faith. Can I trust this? Jesus? Can I reveal 0:05:12.460 --> 0:05:17.420 it to him? Will he embarrass me? Will he judge me? 0:05:18.020 --> 0:05:21.940 Will I walk out with greater shame? But in that moment, 0:05:21.980 --> 0:05:25.020 he had to wrestle with faith. Can I trust what 0:05:25.060 --> 0:05:29.060 Jesus says? Can I trust his heart? He was in 0:05:29.140 --> 0:05:32.020 not in an environment of faith. He was in an 0:05:32.020 --> 0:05:36.460 environment of judgment. The Pharisees were there with judgment. The 0:05:36.460 --> 0:05:41.060 Herodians were there with judgment. The Sadducees were there with judgment. 0:05:41.060 --> 0:05:45.980 There was an atmosphere of judgment and religiosity that existed 0:05:45.980 --> 0:05:49.340 in that gathering that they had. But listen, it's the 0:05:49.339 --> 0:05:57.700 presence of Jesus that overcomes everything else. Oh, man, I'm 0:05:57.740 --> 0:06:00.710 talking to someone here today because I run into people 0:06:00.710 --> 0:06:02.510 all the time that say, well, pastor, you don't know 0:06:02.510 --> 0:06:05.390 this person hurt me. That person. I think all religious 0:06:05.390 --> 0:06:08.990 people are hypocritical or whatever you may say, but I'm 0:06:08.990 --> 0:06:10.710 going to tell you, there's a presence here in this 0:06:10.710 --> 0:06:13.710 place that's bigger than anyone around you, bigger than your past, 0:06:13.710 --> 0:06:15.670 bigger than your neighbor, bigger than the one in front 0:06:15.670 --> 0:06:18.670 of you or behind you. And that's the presence of Jesus, 0:06:18.670 --> 0:06:21.110 the Christ, the son of the living God, the one 0:06:21.110 --> 0:06:24.029 who loves, who knows you, who cares about you. That 0:06:24.029 --> 0:06:27.590 is the presence. That's why we gather together here in 0:06:27.589 --> 0:06:30.670 this place is because of the presence of the Almighty 0:06:30.710 --> 0:06:35.950 Jesus that we gather with. And at that moment in time, 0:06:35.950 --> 0:06:40.070 this man with the withered hand. He understood. I'm sure 0:06:40.070 --> 0:06:42.990 that he didn't look to the right the Pharisee, the Sadducees, 0:06:42.990 --> 0:06:45.110 the Herodians. But he looked at the eyes of Jesus, 0:06:45.110 --> 0:06:47.429 and he looked at the eyes of Jesus. I think 0:06:47.430 --> 0:06:51.390 that he felt the compassion of Jesus, the power of Jesus. 0:06:51.390 --> 0:06:53.950 He felt the safety of being able to come to 0:06:53.950 --> 0:06:58.430 this Jesus and say, yeah, I have a withered hand. 0:07:00.150 --> 0:07:02.190 It tells us that the Pharisees and the teachers of 0:07:02.190 --> 0:07:05.190 the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, 0:07:05.990 --> 0:07:09.190 so they watched him closely to see if he would 0:07:09.230 --> 0:07:13.470 heal on the Sabbath. But they were furious and began 0:07:13.470 --> 0:07:16.030 to discuss with one another. Verse 11 says how they 0:07:16.030 --> 0:07:19.550 may kill him. You see what you say? Well, pastor, 0:07:19.550 --> 0:07:24.070 what's the big deal about the Sabbath? Well, the Sabbath 0:07:24.070 --> 0:07:30.670 had become a big point of contention. The Sabbath was 0:07:30.670 --> 0:07:35.390 the day that they met on. And in the Old Testament, 0:07:35.390 --> 0:07:40.350 God gives rules about the Sabbath. And in essence, the 0:07:40.350 --> 0:07:42.790 rule was this would be a day that you worship God. 0:07:42.790 --> 0:07:47.510 You shouldn't work because it's a time of worshiping God. 0:07:47.510 --> 0:07:50.550 It was the laws of the land. It was what 0:07:50.590 --> 0:07:54.590 God instituted so that they would set aside a particular 0:07:54.590 --> 0:08:02.200 time to rest and to worship Jesus. It seems. would 0:08:02.200 --> 0:08:07.240 poke the bear because seven times he heals on the Sabbath, 0:08:07.840 --> 0:08:14.160 almost like he's doing it on purpose just to. Poke 0:08:14.200 --> 0:08:20.040 the Pharisees. Seven times you have miracles that Jesus did 0:08:20.080 --> 0:08:24.040 on the Sabbath. It tells us in Matthew that they 0:08:24.040 --> 0:08:27.960 had just had a discussion about the Sabbath, where the 0:08:27.960 --> 0:08:31.600 Pharisees were angry at the disciples because they were they 0:08:31.600 --> 0:08:34.520 were pulling wheat and eating it on the Sabbath. And 0:08:34.559 --> 0:08:38.079 so Jesus knew that it was a contention. But but 0:08:38.080 --> 0:08:40.400 here's what I want you to see here. See this 0:08:41.640 --> 0:08:46.160 God has his laws, but the Pharisees, and this is 0:08:46.160 --> 0:08:48.960 in the Torah. This is in the first five books 0:08:48.960 --> 0:08:52.680 of the New Testament. This is, uh, in the Septuagint, 0:08:52.679 --> 0:08:55.200 and it's in the Torah, the, the books of the 0:08:55.200 --> 0:08:59.079 law that are found in the Bible. But the Pharisees 0:08:59.080 --> 0:09:01.880 had added their own laws on top of the laws 0:09:01.880 --> 0:09:08.040 of God. For example, the Pharisees, they had added that 0:09:08.040 --> 0:09:11.560 you can't write, you can't erase, you can't tear on 0:09:11.559 --> 0:09:16.280 the Sabbath, you couldn't conduct business transactions, you couldn't shop, 0:09:16.280 --> 0:09:19.720 you couldn't cook, you couldn't bake, you couldn't kindle a fire. 0:09:19.720 --> 0:09:23.040 You couldn't do gardening, you couldn't do laundry. You couldn't 0:09:23.040 --> 0:09:26.720 carry anything more than six feet in a public area. 0:09:27.040 --> 0:09:32.160 You could not move anything with your hand or even indirectly, 0:09:32.160 --> 0:09:35.800 like with a broom or a broken bowl of flour 0:09:35.840 --> 0:09:39.319 in a vase or candles on a table, or raw food, 0:09:39.320 --> 0:09:41.719 or a rock or a button that had fallen off. 0:09:41.720 --> 0:09:44.040 You couldn't take it and put it on. Now you 0:09:44.040 --> 0:09:47.679 can move something with your elbow or with your breath, 0:09:47.679 --> 0:09:53.520 but not with your hand. In fact, the Pharisees had 0:09:53.520 --> 0:09:57.240 gotten so nitty gritty about this that they said, you can. 0:09:57.280 --> 0:10:01.810 You're not allowed to look in a mirror on the Sabbath. Why? 0:10:02.010 --> 0:10:05.210 Because their contention was you will look in a mirror. 0:10:05.210 --> 0:10:08.290 And if you see a gray hair, you'll be tempted 0:10:08.290 --> 0:10:11.290 to pluck that gray hair. And then you'd fall into 0:10:11.290 --> 0:10:19.850 the problem of working. I've never had that problem. Unrelatable 0:10:19.850 --> 0:10:27.090 to me. So you see how nitty gritty, how obsessive, 0:10:27.130 --> 0:10:40.170 how controlling, how legalistic, how religious they had become. The Sabbath was made 0:14:12.990 --> 0:14:17.670 for man to guard them so that they wouldn't be workaholics. 0:14:18.190 --> 0:14:21.270 But not man for the Sabbath. In other words, Jesus 0:14:21.270 --> 0:14:23.630 was saying, you're missing the whole point of the Sabbath. 0:14:23.670 --> 0:14:29.470 You're putting people under this, under this heavy burden of religiosity. 0:14:29.630 --> 0:14:32.910 And can I tell you something? Let me just be 0:14:32.910 --> 0:14:36.230 honest with some of you here. Some of you here. 0:14:36.550 --> 0:14:44.670 You have lived under the burden of legalism. And when 0:14:44.670 --> 0:14:48.870 you live under the burden of religious legalism, you typically 0:14:48.870 --> 0:14:53.630 end up abandoning Christianity all the way. I'm talking to 0:14:53.630 --> 0:14:57.230 someone here who grew up under very, very strict rules 0:14:57.230 --> 0:15:02.320 in some church. And you grew up with those rules. 0:15:03.280 --> 0:15:05.680 Your hair can be only so long. You can't do this. 0:15:05.680 --> 0:15:07.640 You can't. Your skirt's got to be here. Your dad's 0:15:07.720 --> 0:15:09.440 got to say this. You can't say this. You can't say, 0:15:09.480 --> 0:15:12.400 do this, do that. You can. You can not go 0:15:12.400 --> 0:15:14.240 to the movies. You can watch the movies on TV, 0:15:14.240 --> 0:15:17.880 but not in the movie theater. And all these rules 0:15:17.880 --> 0:15:20.240 and regulations. You can't put makeup on. You can't do 0:15:20.240 --> 0:15:22.320 this if you grew up in that kind of setting. 0:15:22.320 --> 0:15:25.760 There's a lot of people that have abandoned God because 0:15:25.760 --> 0:15:27.720 you grew up in that setting and you felt like, 0:15:27.720 --> 0:15:32.520 I can't measure up. Because what happens when you grow 0:15:32.520 --> 0:15:35.240 up with a lot of rules, you eventually come to 0:15:35.240 --> 0:15:38.040 the conclusion, I can't keep all those rules, so I 0:15:38.040 --> 0:15:41.120 might as well. So God's just angry and mad at me, 0:15:41.120 --> 0:15:43.600 so I might as well just go the other way. 0:15:43.600 --> 0:15:45.360 How many of you know what I'm talking about today? 0:15:49.440 --> 0:16:04.920 Let me tell you. That's not Jesus. There may be 0:16:04.920 --> 0:16:08.600 some of you that were afraid to even come to church. 0:16:08.800 --> 0:16:12.800 Someone invited you because you felt like I've been there. 0:16:13.600 --> 0:16:21.120 I've been judged, accused, looked down on, ostracized. I don't 0:16:21.120 --> 0:16:26.080 think I want that. I want God, but I don't 0:16:26.080 --> 0:16:28.400 think I can live with that. I'm going to tell you. 0:16:29.200 --> 0:16:33.840 Jesus saw beyond all that. This is about a relationship 0:16:33.840 --> 0:16:38.960 with God, not about religion and rules placed upon you. 0:16:39.280 --> 0:16:43.800 This is about an internal transformation of grace, and not 0:16:43.800 --> 0:16:46.480 about you trying to live up to a standard that 0:16:46.480 --> 0:16:49.480 you can never live up to. If you could live 0:16:49.520 --> 0:16:52.640 up to the standard, Jesus would have never come. You 0:16:52.640 --> 0:16:55.840 would have found salvation on your own. We all need 0:16:55.880 --> 0:16:59.240 a Savior. We can't live up to that standard and 0:16:59.240 --> 0:17:02.360 then we live our lives out of gratitude and obedience 0:17:02.360 --> 0:17:04.960 to God. Not out of fear of condemnation, but of 0:17:04.960 --> 0:17:07.600 out of love for the Savior who died for us 0:17:07.600 --> 0:17:15.760 and gave himself for us. That's Christianity. So the Bible 0:17:15.800 --> 0:17:20.600 goes on to tell us. Number three. And I close 0:17:20.600 --> 0:17:29.440 with this. Our issue can only experience a breakthrough when 0:17:29.440 --> 0:17:34.439 we respond in faith to the Living Word. The Bible 0:17:34.440 --> 0:17:38.440 says he looked around at them in anger and deeply distressed. 0:17:38.480 --> 0:17:43.280 You know, Jesus gets angry. The Bible says that he 0:17:43.280 --> 0:17:50.359 was ticked, that Jesus looked around and he was angry. Frustrated. 0:17:51.440 --> 0:17:54.280 He looks around at the people that cared more about 0:17:54.280 --> 0:17:57.320 the laws than they did about the people, and he's 0:17:57.359 --> 0:18:03.890 frustrated and angry at them. And the Bible says at 0:18:03.890 --> 0:18:07.530 the stubbornness of their heart. And so as the man 0:18:07.570 --> 0:18:11.369 stands there, being judged by others and people looking at 0:18:11.369 --> 0:18:12.610 him and saying, oh, are you going to do this 0:18:12.650 --> 0:18:17.889 on the Sabbath? Jesus looks at him. He looks at them. 0:18:17.890 --> 0:18:22.370 He looks at him and Jesus in a defiant way 0:18:22.930 --> 0:18:27.290 filled with love and compassion. He says to this man, 0:18:27.490 --> 0:18:39.250 stretch out your hand.
