I think he 0:01:24.200 --> 0:01:26.200 wanted to keep it on when he took a back 0:01:26.280 --> 0:01:30.800 a bath, because it was his little treasure trove. Oh, I would highly suggest it. I 0:02:05.730 --> 0:02:12.130 became a grandfather. You know, I realized I'm the typical 0:02:12.130 --> 0:02:17.450 grandfather now. I've become that typical grandfather. When someone is 0:02:17.450 --> 0:02:19.650 talking and they say, do you have grandkids? I say, oh, yeah, 0:02:19.650 --> 0:02:22.530 you want to see pictures? Uh, you know, it's just 0:02:22.530 --> 0:02:25.170 I don't know. And of course, you show them the 0:02:25.169 --> 0:02:28.210 pictures and they're like, oh, they're cute. What are they 0:02:28.210 --> 0:02:30.489 going to say? You're the grandfather. They have to say 0:02:30.490 --> 0:02:38.049 they're cute, right? And they call me Papa. Except for 0:02:38.050 --> 0:02:42.370 Josiah's little son, Saint. For some reason, he's gone to 0:02:42.410 --> 0:02:47.690 calling me Papa. So that's my new name, Papa. But 0:02:47.690 --> 0:02:51.250 my oldest grandson. I noticed this about a year ago. 0:02:51.290 --> 0:02:55.450 And his mother, my daughter told me he has this 0:02:55.889 --> 0:03:01.290 unique habit of carrying a backpack around with him wherever 0:03:01.290 --> 0:03:07.609 he goes. Wherever he goes, he has this little backpack. Well, 0:03:07.610 --> 0:03:10.010 I should say little. It seems like it's almost as 0:03:10.010 --> 0:03:12.530 big as he is, but he carries it around with 0:03:12.530 --> 0:03:16.090 him and he doesn't want to take it off. He 0:03:16.090 --> 0:03:18.850 guards it. He. When they want to put him in 0:03:18.850 --> 0:03:20.850 his car seat, they got to struggle with him because 0:03:20.850 --> 0:03:23.050 he doesn't want to take it off. He's always aware 0:03:23.050 --> 0:03:26.450 of where where it's at. And I'm like, hey, Finn, 0:03:26.490 --> 0:03:31.050 why is it what's in that backpack? And he'll say, okay, Papa, 0:03:31.050 --> 0:03:35.970 I'll show you. And so he has an assortment of 0:03:35.970 --> 0:03:40.570 little things he's picked up, from rocks to shiny things to, 0:03:40.610 --> 0:03:43.290 I don't know what else in there, just little random 0:03:43.290 --> 0:03:47.810 pieces that he thinks are valuable. And so he puts 0:03:47.810 --> 0:03:51.210 it in his backpack and he carries it around. Now 0:03:52.050 --> 0:03:56.370 he he really treasures that he really holds to it. 0:03:57.730 --> 0:04:03.740 I'm convinced that when he's 30 years old. And I 0:04:03.740 --> 0:04:06.540 were to take that backpack and show that little colorful 0:04:06.580 --> 0:04:09.660 backpack to him. He would look at it and say, 0:04:10.140 --> 0:04:14.860 what is this junk? Because you see, as we grow, 0:04:14.900 --> 0:04:19.500 as we mature that which we value, at one stage, 0:04:19.500 --> 0:04:23.900 we may not value in our maturity. I'm talking to you, 0:04:23.900 --> 0:04:26.740 some of you here today. I believe that some of 0:04:26.740 --> 0:04:31.180 us are still in a immature stage in our spiritual 0:04:31.180 --> 0:04:35.220 walk in terms of what we treasure and what we value. 0:04:35.540 --> 0:04:37.420 And today, I want to talk to you about the 0:04:37.420 --> 0:04:42.580 words of Jesus, specifically about where is our treasure? Where 0:04:42.620 --> 0:04:47.860 is our heart? What do you value? And I'm convinced 0:04:47.860 --> 0:04:51.300 that some of you, a year from now, may look 0:04:51.300 --> 0:04:55.340 at your proverbial backpack that you have today and look 0:04:55.339 --> 0:04:58.420 at it and say, what was I thinking? That was 0:04:58.420 --> 0:05:03.299 just junk. I've exchanged it for stuff that's much, much 0:05:03.300 --> 0:05:07.179 more valuable. So I want you to take your Bibles, 0:05:07.180 --> 0:05:09.900 and I want you to turn to Matthew chapter six. 0:05:09.900 --> 0:05:12.620 Matthew chapter six. We're going to be looking at verses 0:05:12.700 --> 0:05:19.300 19 through 24 of Matthew chapter six. This is in 0:05:19.300 --> 0:05:22.460 the context of the sermon on the Mount. Jesus message 0:05:22.700 --> 0:05:26.700 his most iconic, powerful, legendary message. We call it the 0:05:26.700 --> 0:05:31.659 sermon on the Mount, where Jesus is explaining to his disciples, 0:05:31.660 --> 0:05:36.940 really the culture of the kingdom. And at the beginning 0:05:36.940 --> 0:05:40.460 of this passage, his disciples say, we want to learn 0:05:40.460 --> 0:05:44.460 how to pray like your disciples pray. And Jesus teaches 0:05:44.460 --> 0:05:46.940 them a prayer that many of us. If you grew 0:05:46.940 --> 0:05:51.300 up in religious, Christian religious circles, you've probably repeated many times. 0:05:51.300 --> 0:05:55.860 We call it the Our Father. And it starts out 0:05:55.860 --> 0:06:01.710 by saying, Our Father who art in heaven, Then hallowed 0:06:02.310 --> 0:06:10.550 be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done. 0:06:11.430 --> 0:06:16.070 On earth as it is in heaven. Jesus taught him 0:06:16.070 --> 0:06:18.830 this prayer, but then he goes on and he explains 0:06:18.830 --> 0:06:23.670 to them this powerful principle about treasures and heart. And 0:06:23.670 --> 0:06:26.550 I'm going to read to you beginning in verse 19, 0:06:26.589 --> 0:06:31.670 it says, do not. This is Jesus speaking. Do not 0:06:31.670 --> 0:06:36.230 lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and 0:06:36.230 --> 0:06:41.710 rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But 0:06:41.710 --> 0:06:46.870 lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth 0:06:46.870 --> 0:06:50.590 nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in 0:06:50.589 --> 0:06:56.270 and steal. Listen. Here it goes. For where your treasure is, 0:06:56.910 --> 0:07:02.270 there your heart will be also. Let me repeat that 0:07:02.270 --> 0:07:10.390 last phrase. For where your treasure is, there your heart 0:07:11.230 --> 0:07:14.790 will be also. I want to introduce you to three 0:07:15.270 --> 0:07:18.230 treasure principles that I see in this passage. Number one, 0:07:18.230 --> 0:07:22.270 you can write this down. Treasure. Principle number one. Your 0:07:22.270 --> 0:07:26.950 heart will always be close to where your treasure is at. 0:07:28.070 --> 0:07:31.750 Show me what you value and that's where your heart 0:07:31.750 --> 0:07:36.310 is at. Show me what's important to you. And your 0:07:36.310 --> 0:07:41.030 heart is going to be close. Your affection, your emotions, 0:07:41.510 --> 0:07:47.830 your interest will lie very close to where your treasure 0:07:47.830 --> 0:07:51.710 is at. If I want to know what's important to someone, 0:07:51.710 --> 0:07:54.510 it's not always what they say with their lips, but 0:07:54.510 --> 0:07:57.270 it's what they talk about. Think about what they get 0:07:57.310 --> 0:08:02.680 emotional about. What that Indicates where their heart is at. 0:08:03.200 --> 0:08:06.520 And Jesus was saying this. In essence, what Jesus was 0:08:06.520 --> 0:08:12.400 telling us is that most of us here on earth, 0:08:13.320 --> 0:08:18.680 we tend to make our make our treasure things that 0:08:18.680 --> 0:08:23.600 we can physically touch and see. And Jesus is saying, 0:08:24.520 --> 0:08:27.800 many of you are putting your treasure in the wrong place, 0:08:28.040 --> 0:08:31.280 because your treasure needs to be placed in something that 0:08:31.280 --> 0:08:37.319 is not just temporary, but eternal. In fact, he describes, um, 0:08:37.360 --> 0:08:40.080 what people put their treasure in. He says, do not 0:08:40.080 --> 0:08:43.120 lay up your treasure. Don't make your treasure that that 0:08:43.120 --> 0:08:48.280 which moths and rust destroy. And thieves break in. Back 0:08:48.280 --> 0:08:53.040 in the days of Jesus, the wealthy people. Their garments, 0:08:53.520 --> 0:08:57.840 their robes were one of their treasures. And he said, 0:08:57.840 --> 0:09:01.120 moths can eat that. I don't know, I remember going 0:09:01.160 --> 0:09:05.120 to my grandmother's house and opening her closet and I said, grandma, 0:09:05.120 --> 0:09:09.319 what's that smell? And she said, it's mothballs. Anybody grow 0:09:09.320 --> 0:09:13.520 up smelling mothballs? I don't know where all the moths 0:09:13.520 --> 0:09:15.880 has gone, but I don't. I don't think moths are 0:09:15.920 --> 0:09:17.960 a thing anymore. If I asked my kids, do you 0:09:17.960 --> 0:09:20.400 know what a moth is? They probably say no. But 0:09:20.400 --> 0:09:22.440 I guess back in the day, moths would get into 0:09:22.440 --> 0:09:25.360 closets and they would eat your clothes and you would 0:09:25.400 --> 0:09:28.119 have holes in them, I don't know. The moths disappeared. 0:09:28.120 --> 0:09:31.960 We don't do that anymore. I don't know. But basically, 0:09:31.960 --> 0:09:35.040 moths eat clothes. And so back in the day, if 0:09:35.040 --> 0:09:37.359 moths got in your clothes, they would destroy your clothes. 0:09:37.679 --> 0:09:40.200 A lot of the Jewish people in the day are 0:09:40.200 --> 0:09:43.720 back in the days of Jesus. They. They didn't have, uh, 0:09:43.760 --> 0:09:49.840 bank accounts or cryptocurrency. They had, uh, silver and gold 0:09:49.840 --> 0:09:53.880 and jewelry, and that's what they valued. And Jesus says 0:09:53.880 --> 0:09:56.720 that kind of treasure rusts with time. If it gets 0:09:56.760 --> 0:10:00.040 wet and moist and not in the right conditions, it'll rust. 0:10:00.290 --> 0:10:05.050 And he also says, you know, there is the threat 0:10:05.050 --> 0:10:08.450 of someone stealing what you have so you can what 0:10:08.450 --> 0:10:12.849 you have could be stolen. That that's all temporary treasures. 0:10:13.570 --> 0:10:18.490 And Jesus is saying, I'm challenging you to make sure 0:10:18.490 --> 0:10:22.290 that you lay treasures in a place where moth or 0:10:22.330 --> 0:10:26.650 rust or thieves cannot touch. In other words, I want 0:10:26.650 --> 0:10:31.730 you to start thinking more eternal than temporal. Do you 0:10:31.730 --> 0:10:35.330 realize that most of us here, we probably don't put 0:10:35.330 --> 0:10:38.330 a lot of thought into what happens after we die? 0:10:39.929 --> 0:10:43.250 In fact, some people think, well, pastor, that's morbid. No, 0:10:44.290 --> 0:10:48.410 it's only morbid if you are obsessed with the death part, 0:10:48.530 --> 0:10:53.650 but don't understand what happens after we die. I was 0:10:53.650 --> 0:10:57.690 interested in discovering what most people think about life after 0:10:57.690 --> 0:11:01.809 death here in America. And, uh, Pew Foundation did some 0:11:01.809 --> 0:11:05.690 research not too long ago about life after death. And 0:11:05.690 --> 0:11:10.089 here's what they discovered that 75% of adults believe in 0:11:10.090 --> 0:11:13.449 some kind of heaven. They believe that there is some 0:11:13.450 --> 0:11:16.730 sort of Paradise after we die. Some place of no suffering, 0:11:16.730 --> 0:11:22.330 some place of no tears, no pain, some utopia of 0:11:22.330 --> 0:11:25.530 some sort. It may not be a biblically defined heaven, 0:11:25.530 --> 0:11:30.170 but they believe in that 75% of people. Interestingly enough, 0:11:30.170 --> 0:11:35.890 that 37% of people that are not religiously affiliated also 0:11:35.890 --> 0:11:41.450 believe in heaven. 17% of adults in America do not 0:11:41.450 --> 0:11:44.170 believe in any life after death. In other words, they 0:11:44.170 --> 0:11:46.890 believe that once you die, it's over. You're like an animal. 0:11:47.010 --> 0:11:50.970 You're done buried. Life is over. The only existence that 0:11:50.970 --> 0:11:53.930 you have is the years that you have on earth. 0:11:54.929 --> 0:11:56.730 And you say, well, pastor, how many years do we 0:11:56.730 --> 0:11:59.450 have on earth? Well, the average American lives to be about. 0:11:59.890 --> 0:12:06.100 The average American male is 73 lives to be 73 0:12:06.100 --> 0:12:11.580 years old. The average American woman lives to be 79. 0:12:11.580 --> 0:12:13.819 Come on, let's hear it. For the women, they live longer. 0:12:14.260 --> 0:12:20.180 I'm not sure what that tells us, but. Nonetheless, let 0:12:20.179 --> 0:12:24.859 me say this. The great majority of us, I believe 0:12:26.380 --> 0:12:31.900 we live primarily conscious of what we can touch and feel, 0:12:31.900 --> 0:12:35.300 the here and the now. And what Jesus is saying 0:12:35.300 --> 0:12:37.700 is that you need to live with a with a 0:12:37.700 --> 0:12:38.780 bigger mindset. 0:12:45.860 --> 0:12:48.540 This is bold steps with Mark job. You're just getting out of bed. Um, because 0:14:21.030 --> 0:14:24.870 your body is not meant to last forever. Your body 0:14:24.870 --> 0:14:29.110 has an expiration date. And the moment that your body dies, 0:14:29.110 --> 0:14:33.550 your heart stops beating. Your brainwaves stop functioning. Your body 0:14:33.550 --> 0:14:37.390 is done. It goes to the grave, but your soul 0:14:37.390 --> 0:14:41.510 and your spirit do not have an expiration date. In fact, 0:14:41.510 --> 0:14:44.750 your soul. The Bible talks about the soul of man 0:14:44.750 --> 0:14:48.790 and woman and your soul. Is that unique part of 0:14:48.790 --> 0:14:54.830 you that, uh non-tangible invisible part of you that we 0:14:54.830 --> 0:14:58.150 that makes up who you are? It's your personality. It's 0:14:58.150 --> 0:15:03.119 your mind, your intellect, your volition. It's who makes you. You. 0:15:03.520 --> 0:15:07.120 The Bible says that that does not have an expiration 0:15:07.120 --> 0:15:10.240 date when you die. Listen to me. When you die, 0:15:10.240 --> 0:15:17.040 when your body dies, your soul continues to exist. That's 0:15:17.040 --> 0:15:20.240 not only taught in the Bible, but you will find 0:15:20.240 --> 0:15:25.040 even a lot of other scientific, um, studies that have 0:15:25.040 --> 0:15:28.600 indicated that when people die, their heart stops, yet they 0:15:28.600 --> 0:15:32.600 have this consciousness of seeing their body still on the 0:15:32.640 --> 0:15:35.680 bed there. And they have these experiences that scientists and 0:15:35.680 --> 0:15:39.760 doctors can't explain because there's an awareness, a consciousness, even 0:15:39.760 --> 0:15:42.760 after their body has died, of what was happening in 0:15:42.760 --> 0:15:47.040 the room. Because your body, your soul, it doesn't pass 0:15:47.040 --> 0:15:50.240 away when your body passes away. But then you also 0:15:50.240 --> 0:15:53.800 have a spirit. Every person is born with a spirit. 0:15:53.800 --> 0:15:57.200 You are a spirit being. Uh, when you are born, 0:15:57.200 --> 0:15:59.640 the spirit part of you is the part that interacts 0:15:59.640 --> 0:16:02.240 with the spiritual world. So you have a body, you 0:16:02.240 --> 0:16:04.760 have a soul, and you have a spirit. Now don't 0:16:04.760 --> 0:16:08.080 confuse that with the Holy Spirit because you are a 0:16:08.080 --> 0:16:10.560 spiritual being. But the Holy Spirit, which is a third 0:16:10.560 --> 0:16:13.400 person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. When you become 0:16:13.400 --> 0:16:16.920 a believer, he quickens or makes your spirit alive, and 0:16:16.920 --> 0:16:20.360 suddenly you are conscious of the spiritual world. God speaks 0:16:20.360 --> 0:16:22.360 to you in powerful ways. The Word of God comes 0:16:22.400 --> 0:16:25.680 to life. You're convicted. You're led, you're prompted. You're helped. 0:16:25.680 --> 0:16:34.760 You're empowered through the Holy Spirit. Amen. So body, soul, 0:16:34.760 --> 0:16:37.520 and spirit, your body passes away. And what Jesus is 0:16:37.520 --> 0:16:40.480 saying to us, listen to me. This is important. What 0:16:40.560 --> 0:16:44.760 Jesus is saying to us is most of us live 0:16:46.200 --> 0:16:52.600 valuing a very temporary treasure when our treasure needs to 0:16:52.600 --> 0:16:56.640 be more eternal. And what Jesus is saying is that 0:16:56.640 --> 0:16:58.720 most of us, our heart is fixed on the here 0:16:58.720 --> 0:17:03.360 and the now. um, he tells us where your treasure is. 0:17:03.360 --> 0:17:06.480 There your heart will be also. Listen to me. Your 0:17:06.480 --> 0:17:11.240 heart follows your treasure. So look for what you value 0:17:11.240 --> 0:17:15.080 the most. And you will find where your heart is at. 0:17:15.640 --> 0:17:18.560 And when you find where your heart is at. You 0:17:18.560 --> 0:17:24.639 will also find the greatest influence on your life. Many 0:17:24.640 --> 0:17:30.840 of us get deluded into thinking that what other people value, 0:17:31.119 --> 0:17:33.719 the material world that we live in, that that is 0:17:33.720 --> 0:17:36.480 the most important thing, and our heart is close to that. 0:17:37.280 --> 0:17:42.200 And we live very shallow, superficial lives because our values 0:17:42.200 --> 0:17:47.200 are placed on things that are temporary. Can I tell 0:17:47.200 --> 0:17:52.640 you something? I mean, that scratch that you got in 0:17:52.720 --> 0:17:55.919 that newer car that you have that almost sent you 0:17:55.920 --> 0:18:01.690 to therapy. You just couldn't get over talking about it 0:18:01.690 --> 0:18:04.450 for weeks on a time, and you were angry and 0:18:04.450 --> 0:18:07.370 upset about it. Can I tell you something? When you 0:18:07.369 --> 0:18:10.610 are on your deathbed, you are not going to have 0:18:10.609 --> 0:18:13.850 one thought about that scratch on your car. Can I 0:18:13.850 --> 0:18:16.570 tell you something else? When you're on the other side 0:18:16.570 --> 0:18:19.889 of life, that is going to seem like some of 0:18:19.890 --> 0:18:23.770 the little items in Finn's backpack. You're going to look 0:18:23.770 --> 0:18:27.169 and say, that was so dumb. Why did I care 0:18:27.250 --> 0:18:31.929 so much about that? And so what Jesus is reminding 0:18:31.930 --> 0:18:35.290 us of is he's telling us, listen, so many of 0:18:35.290 --> 0:18:37.889 us are living our lives with our treasures in the 0:18:37.890 --> 0:18:41.410 wrong place. We need to redefine what our treasure is 0:18:41.410 --> 0:18:44.850 so that our heart can follow our treasures. And many 0:18:44.850 --> 0:18:46.770 of us, our heart is in the wrong place. And 0:18:46.770 --> 0:18:48.530 if your heart is in the wrong place, you're living 0:18:48.530 --> 0:18:51.570 the wrong way for the wrong things, with the wrong priorities, 0:18:51.730 --> 0:18:58.770 and ultimately wasting your life. Number two, not only your 0:18:58.770 --> 0:19:01.379 heart will always be close to where your treasure is at. 0:19:01.660 --> 0:19:05.380 But secondly, the second treasure principle is this the way 0:19:05.580 --> 0:19:09.540 the lens through which you view life will determine how 0:19:09.540 --> 0:19:13.940 you live life. Notice what Jesus tells us in verse 22. 0:19:14.820 --> 0:19:17.900 It's in the context of our priorities, our treasures, our heart. 0:19:17.940 --> 0:19:21.899 He says this the eye is the lamp of the body. 0:19:22.660 --> 0:19:26.020 So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will 0:19:26.060 --> 0:19:29.660 be full of light. But if your eye is bad, 0:19:29.820 --> 0:19:33.899 your whole body will be full of darkness. And when you don't see clearly the purpose 0:20:29.660 --> 0:20:32.100 and priorities of your life, you start to live the 0:20:32.100 --> 0:20:38.060 wrong way. You will always make mistakes and wrong turns 0:20:38.060 --> 0:20:43.860 if you cannot see clearly where you're going spiritually in life. Listen, 0:20:43.900 --> 0:20:48.220 some of you right now have made a virtual mess 0:20:48.220 --> 0:20:54.300 of your life your marriage, your family, your relationships, your priorities, 0:20:54.420 --> 0:21:00.179 your finances, your emotions, your mind. Recently, I was driving down I-55, and I 0:21:16.700 --> 0:21:19.140 don't know if anybody else got caught up in this, 0:21:19.380 --> 0:21:21.939 but as I was driving, they had predicted a storm. 0:21:23.140 --> 0:21:29.179 The sky got dark, the clouds rolled in, and then suddenly, 0:21:29.420 --> 0:21:33.500 at first very lightly, but then I got pelted with 0:21:33.540 --> 0:21:39.420 huge hailstones. Was anybody else in that? The point was, 0:21:39.420 --> 0:21:42.980 I couldn't see clearly because of the, uh, because of 0:21:42.980 --> 0:21:45.180 the hail, because of the darkness that was there. When 0:21:45.180 --> 0:21:47.820 you can't see clearly, you end up in accidents. And 0:21:47.820 --> 0:21:52.100 there are multiple accidents that happened because of lack of clarity.
