The Ten Commandments were given to the people of 0:01:01.880 --> 0:01:06.200 Israel to help shape their culture. It's a reflection of 0:01:06.200 --> 0:01:10.200 God's heart, what he values, he was saying, I want 0:01:10.200 --> 0:01:16.000 this to shape the culture in which you operate. And 0:01:16.000 --> 0:01:20.399 truth is a culture of the kingdom. So lies is 0:01:20.440 --> 0:01:24.119 a culture of the kingdom of darkness. And I know 0:01:24.120 --> 0:01:28.080 that every believer listening to me today would agree thou 0:01:28.080 --> 0:01:32.880 shalt not lie. However, studies tell us, surveys tell us 0:01:32.880 --> 0:01:39.080 that 91% of Americans regularly lie about something. 0:01:39.120 --> 0:01:40.040 Oh my goodness. 0:01:40.280 --> 0:01:44.360 Which means that we have accepted this thought that as 0:01:44.360 --> 0:01:48.040 long as it's not a very severe lie, it's okay 0:01:48.040 --> 0:01:52.160 to bend the truth and not always have to be honest. 0:01:52.200 --> 0:01:54.640 Yeah, we buy the myth of the white lie, don't we? 0:01:54.680 --> 0:01:59.280 We do. And so the Ten Commandments and Jesus reiterates 0:01:59.280 --> 0:02:02.090 it in the New Testament. I think that 98% of this crowd 0:02:24.370 --> 0:02:29.850 would say, absolutely lying is wrong. We should not do it. 0:02:30.090 --> 0:02:32.810 It shouldn't be a part of our lives. We should 0:02:32.810 --> 0:02:36.530 be truthful. We should not deceive people. And so we'd 0:02:36.530 --> 0:02:41.770 all be in agreement in that. Uh, 0:02:50.530 --> 0:02:58.010 did a nationwide telephone survey a few years ago. Online cataloging. 0:02:58.010 --> 0:03:01.250 When we lie, how we lie, and why we lie. 0:03:01.889 --> 0:03:09.370 The results were very interesting. 91% of Americans confess that 0:03:09.370 --> 0:03:17.450 they regularly lie. That's 91%. That means that there's only 0:03:17.450 --> 0:03:22.330 about 9% of Americans that don't regularly lie. And who knows, 0:03:22.330 --> 0:03:31.650 maybe some of them were lying. But this is pretty widespread. 79% 0:03:32.010 --> 0:03:36.370 had given out false phone numbers or invented new identities 0:03:36.370 --> 0:03:43.330 when meeting strangers. One out of every five people interviewed 0:03:43.330 --> 0:03:48.369 admitted that they couldn't get through even one day without 0:03:48.370 --> 0:03:53.690 going along with some previously manufactured lie. So 20% of 0:03:53.690 --> 0:03:57.490 the people in America say, I can't go even one 0:03:57.490 --> 0:04:03.700 day without Perpetuating some lie that I'm living. Well, that's 0:04:03.700 --> 0:04:08.260 a pretty high percentage of them. Uh, do you know 0:04:08.380 --> 0:04:12.140 what we lie most about? Well, in doing a survey 0:04:12.140 --> 0:04:14.580 and asking what we lie most about, there's a couple 0:04:14.580 --> 0:04:18.340 of things we lie about. We lie most about our income, 0:04:19.460 --> 0:04:26.940 our weight, and our age. The funny thing about weight, 0:04:26.940 --> 0:04:29.659 of course, is that it's pretty obvious sometimes if you're 0:04:29.660 --> 0:04:34.220 lying or not. The other fourth lie that came in 0:04:34.260 --> 0:04:37.460 sort of hand in hand in place number four, was 0:04:37.460 --> 0:04:43.100 the true color of our hair. So what I've discovered 0:04:43.100 --> 0:04:46.580 is that although most of us believe that lying is wrong, 0:04:46.740 --> 0:04:50.420 it seems to be that our culture accepts lying as 0:04:50.420 --> 0:04:53.620 a way of life, and the great majority of us lie. Now, 0:04:53.620 --> 0:04:58.339 some of you would say, well, pastor, I know people lie, but. 0:04:58.779 --> 0:05:03.820 But I'm talking about white lies. I don't really know 0:05:03.820 --> 0:05:06.979 where the color coding of lies came in, but I'm 0:05:07.020 --> 0:05:10.299 not really sure I've ever heard of the Bible talk 0:05:10.339 --> 0:05:13.820 about a white lie. You would define a white lie 0:05:13.820 --> 0:05:17.260 as a lie that it doesn't hurt anybody. It's not bad. 0:05:17.260 --> 0:05:21.260 It's like when someone calls and the boss is saying, no, no, 0:05:21.260 --> 0:05:25.700 you say sorry, he's not here right now. Well, that's 0:05:25.700 --> 0:05:27.900 kind of a white lie, right? He is here. He 0:05:27.900 --> 0:05:30.140 doesn't want to talk. It may not 0:07:23.990 --> 0:07:28.470 have serious consequences to what you are currently doing, but 0:07:28.470 --> 0:07:32.790 in the spiritual realm, there's some pretty heavy consequences. And 0:07:32.790 --> 0:07:34.990 I want to talk to you about that. Why do 0:07:34.990 --> 0:07:38.190 we lie? Well, I believe that we lie to impress people, 0:07:38.190 --> 0:07:41.350 to create an image, cover up our insecurities. We lie 0:07:41.350 --> 0:07:44.910 to escape consequences. We're late to work. Hey, my car 0:07:44.910 --> 0:07:47.470 broke down. It's been your fourth time. Your car broke down. 0:07:47.470 --> 0:07:50.750 Get a new car. Um. We lie to make a profit. 0:07:50.790 --> 0:07:55.070 A sales guys always are out there. I tell you what, uh, 0:07:55.750 --> 0:07:57.870 two years ago, I was looking around to try to 0:07:57.910 --> 0:08:00.880 buy a used car for my daughter. And, man, I 0:08:00.880 --> 0:08:04.520 tell you, you want to hear some stories. People spend stories. 0:08:04.520 --> 0:08:13.400 Try to buy a used car. I checked Carfax and 0:08:13.400 --> 0:08:15.360 I said, well, last time you went to the mechanic, 0:08:15.400 --> 0:08:19.560 this had like 150,000 miles on it, and now it 0:08:19.560 --> 0:08:23.240 only has 90,000 miles on it. Something wrong with that picture? 0:08:25.400 --> 0:08:29.280 To make a profit. Oh, we lied to get revenge 0:08:29.280 --> 0:08:32.800 or to hurt someone else. We lie for convenience sake. 0:08:32.800 --> 0:08:35.760 Just because it's easier to lie. Sometimes we lie to 0:08:35.760 --> 0:08:40.880 protect ourselves from the consequences of others. And so there's 0:08:40.880 --> 0:08:44.280 a whole series of reasons why we lie. But I 0:08:44.280 --> 0:08:47.320 want to understate here. I want to make sure that 0:08:47.320 --> 0:08:51.000 we have very clear that the fact that we break 0:08:51.040 --> 0:08:57.240 the ninth commandment has some serious spiritual implications, although it 0:08:57.240 --> 0:09:01.559 may be fully accepted in our Our society and small 0:09:01.559 --> 0:09:04.320 lies may be a part of our culture in the 0:09:04.320 --> 0:09:09.839 Kingdom of God. Mathematics or dynamics? This is a huge issue. 0:09:10.040 --> 0:09:13.240 And let me tell you why. The best way that 0:09:13.240 --> 0:09:19.079 I could describe it is this language is the precursor 0:09:19.080 --> 0:09:23.199 to culture. When I'm traveling around, for example, I'm at 0:09:23.200 --> 0:09:24.880 an airport. I like to kind of play a game. 0:09:24.920 --> 0:09:27.680 I see someone and I, I try to figure out 0:09:27.679 --> 0:09:30.719 what country they're from. And sometimes you can tell by 0:09:30.720 --> 0:09:33.080 the way someone looks or the way they dress, but 0:09:33.080 --> 0:09:35.840 then when they open their mouth and you hear them 0:09:35.840 --> 0:09:39.800 speaking French, obviously you deduce they're from France or they're 0:09:39.800 --> 0:09:43.319 speaking German, you know, they're from Germany, because the language 0:09:43.320 --> 0:09:48.600 that they speak indicates the place that they're from. Because 0:09:48.960 --> 0:09:51.400 and and once you know the language that they speak, 0:09:51.400 --> 0:09:53.760 you know, that the country that they're from and you know, 0:09:53.760 --> 0:09:59.319 the culture that they come from. Even with Spanish, for example, 0:09:59.320 --> 0:10:02.930 when I hear someone say, Joe and Voss, I know 0:10:02.929 --> 0:10:06.210 they're Argentinian because that's what they say there. If you 0:10:06.250 --> 0:10:10.490 hear someone speaking Spanish and they say Zanahoria and Zapato 0:10:10.490 --> 0:10:13.370 and Zamora, you know that they're Castilian, that they grew 0:10:13.370 --> 0:10:16.250 up in Spain because they had this thing going. And so, 0:10:16.250 --> 0:10:18.090 you know where they're from. If you're from the US 0:10:18.130 --> 0:10:23.570 and someone says, how y'all doing today? We say, you're 0:10:23.570 --> 0:10:25.970 not from here, right? We know they're from the South 0:10:25.970 --> 0:10:28.730 because there's a lot of y'all want some iced tea 0:10:28.770 --> 0:10:31.610 for us. And we know, hey, they're not from here. 0:10:32.530 --> 0:10:35.130 My daughter was studying in California. She says, dad, all 0:10:35.130 --> 0:10:37.970 these people are. When I start talking, they're all kind 0:10:38.010 --> 0:10:39.890 of laughing and they're saying, where are you from? You 0:10:39.890 --> 0:10:43.010 have to be from Chicago or somewhere. And I didn't 0:10:43.010 --> 0:10:45.890 even know I had an accent. But the Californians all 0:10:45.890 --> 0:10:51.130 think I have an accent because they say mom, not mom. 0:10:52.730 --> 0:10:57.650 So the language that you speak indicates the culture that 0:10:57.650 --> 0:11:02.730 you come from And the environment in which you live. 0:11:02.730 --> 0:11:06.730 Language tells you that. Well, Jesus is talking to his 0:11:06.730 --> 0:11:11.730 disciples and Jesus is talking to some, to his disciples 0:11:11.730 --> 0:11:15.329 and to some people that he was trying to speak 0:11:15.330 --> 0:11:19.250 into their lives. And in John chapter eight, I will 0:11:19.290 --> 0:11:23.890 begin reading in verse 4343 through 47, Jesus looks at 0:11:23.890 --> 0:11:27.329 some people that are not understanding him, not because they 0:11:27.330 --> 0:11:31.130 don't speak the same technical language that he spoke, but 0:11:31.130 --> 0:11:34.810 because they don't speak the same spiritual language. And he says, 0:11:35.809 --> 0:11:40.810 why is my language not clear to you? Because you 0:11:40.809 --> 0:11:44.730 are unable to hear what I say. You belong to 0:11:44.730 --> 0:11:49.650 your father. Your father has taught you a language. That's 0:11:49.650 --> 0:11:53.610 not my language. You understand your father's language, but you 0:11:53.610 --> 0:11:58.130 don't understand my language. Well, what father is he talking about? 0:11:58.170 --> 0:12:02.020 He says your father. The devil. And you want to 0:12:02.059 --> 0:12:07.380 carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from 0:12:07.380 --> 0:12:13.300 the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is 0:12:13.300 --> 0:12:18.939 no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his 0:12:19.140 --> 0:12:23.140 native language. For he is a liar and the father 0:12:23.140 --> 0:12:25.179 of lies. Yet, because I tell you the truth, you 0:12:25.179 --> 0:12:29.140 do not believe me. What Jesus was telling his disciples 0:12:29.140 --> 0:12:32.580 and people that were unwilling to receive his message, is 0:12:32.580 --> 0:12:37.060 that he was telling them that the native language, that 0:12:37.059 --> 0:12:40.340 the original language of the kingdom of darkness is the 0:12:40.340 --> 0:12:46.420 language of lies, beguilement, deception, and the bending of truth. 0:12:47.420 --> 0:12:51.740 If you speak the language of lies, then it indicates 0:12:51.740 --> 0:12:55.260 that you are being influenced by the culture of darkness, 0:12:55.700 --> 0:12:58.540 because that is the language that is spoken in the 0:12:58.540 --> 0:13:03.940 culture of darkness. On the other hand, when you speak 0:13:03.940 --> 0:13:07.500 the language of truth and integrity, it's the language that's 0:13:07.500 --> 0:13:10.700 spoken in the kingdom of light. The language of God 0:13:10.740 --> 0:13:15.540 is truth. The language of the enemy is lying and deception. 0:13:23.100 --> 0:13:25.540 You're listening to Bold Steps with Mark Jobe. You don't even know how 0:15:48.480 --> 0:15:51.200 you couldn't if you wanted to, because it's not the 0:15:51.200 --> 0:15:56.200 language that you speak. God cannot lie. He doesn't speak 0:15:56.200 --> 0:15:59.760 the language of lies. Yet the Bible says that the 0:15:59.920 --> 0:16:04.400 language of the darkness, the language of the enemy of 0:16:04.400 --> 0:16:08.120 our souls, that is his native language. He can't tell 0:16:08.120 --> 0:16:10.800 the truth if he wants to. He only tells the 0:16:10.800 --> 0:16:14.120 truth to mix it with deception and lies, because his 0:16:14.120 --> 0:16:18.160 native tongue is that of deception and lying. He's called 0:16:18.160 --> 0:16:23.120 the father of lies. On the other hand, just like 0:16:23.120 --> 0:16:28.080 God cannot lie, God cannot bend the truth. God cannot 0:16:28.080 --> 0:16:34.240 distort the truth on the same hand. Deceit, just like truth, 0:16:34.240 --> 0:16:38.480 prepares the way for the kingdom of God culture. Deceit 0:16:38.480 --> 0:16:42.240 prepares the way for the kingdom of darkness. Culture. Hear 0:16:42.280 --> 0:16:44.240 me well. Look up at me. This is really important. 0:16:45.600 --> 0:16:49.640 Whatever words you speak are making way for a culture 0:16:49.640 --> 0:16:55.320 that you're introducing. If there's resentment and bitterness and anger 0:16:55.320 --> 0:16:58.400 that you speak in your household, you're beginning to create 0:16:58.400 --> 0:17:03.680 a culture of resentment, bitterness, and anger. If you're leading 0:17:03.680 --> 0:17:07.479 a football team of junior high kids and you speak 0:17:07.480 --> 0:17:12.480 encouragement and confidence and ability to win, then you're creating 0:17:12.480 --> 0:17:18.520 a culture of winning and confidence into that team. Whatever 0:17:18.520 --> 0:17:23.800 words you speak into your world are precedes the culture 0:17:23.800 --> 0:17:29.119 that you're introducing into your world. This is exactly what 0:17:29.119 --> 0:17:32.920 happened in the beginning with the Garden of Eden. If 0:17:32.920 --> 0:17:36.760 you look at Genesis, Genesis chapter three, you realize that 0:17:36.760 --> 0:17:41.320 God created Paradise. He created a world in which people 0:17:41.320 --> 0:17:43.760 walked with him and talked with them. He created a 0:17:43.760 --> 0:17:46.280 world in which there was no bigotry, in which there 0:17:46.280 --> 0:17:48.520 was no rape and there was no murder, and there 0:17:48.520 --> 0:17:51.640 was no anger, and there was no distinction of color. 0:17:51.640 --> 0:17:55.280 And people walked with him in freedom. And that world 0:17:55.280 --> 0:17:57.879 was the world that God created us to live and 0:17:57.880 --> 0:18:02.690 walk in. However, it tells us in Genesis chapter three 0:18:03.330 --> 0:18:09.490 that the serpent, the way he wiggled his way into Paradise, 0:18:09.690 --> 0:18:14.890 was through the language. What language? The language of beguilement 0:18:14.890 --> 0:18:19.290 or deception? Notice what it says in Genesis chapter three, 0:18:19.330 --> 0:18:24.290 verse one. Now the serpent was more crafty than any 0:18:24.290 --> 0:18:28.210 of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He 0:18:28.210 --> 0:18:32.530 said to the woman, Did God really say, you must 0:18:32.530 --> 0:18:36.410 not eat from the tree in the garden? They could only not eat from 0:18:45.810 --> 0:18:51.010 one tree in the garden. So he he misled Eve 0:18:51.050 --> 0:18:54.490 in his statement. It was only half true. He had said, 0:18:54.490 --> 0:18:59.580 don't eat from one tree. Not all the trees. He 0:19:00.060 --> 0:19:04.780 lied about the righteousness of God. The serpent said, God said, 0:19:04.780 --> 0:19:09.100 you shall truly die. But. But I don't think you will. 0:19:09.619 --> 0:19:12.780 He lied about the goodness of God.
