Scripture tells us that we can actually grieve 0:00:58.920 --> 0:01:04.080 the Holy Spirit inside of us. So it's impossible for 0:01:04.080 --> 0:01:07.720 us to be grieving the spirit and experiencing joy at 0:01:07.720 --> 0:01:08.000 the same. 0:01:08.040 --> 0:01:08.920 Can't do it? No. 0:01:09.120 --> 0:01:14.240 And it specifically points to unforgiveness as one of the 0:01:14.240 --> 0:01:17.600 root causes that grieves the spirit. And so today, I 0:01:17.600 --> 0:01:22.119 want you to listen, soften your hearts, open your ears, 0:01:22.160 --> 0:01:26.000 because just maybe God is pointing to a root that 0:01:26.000 --> 0:01:28.600 may be in your life that is causing you not 0:01:28.600 --> 0:01:30.920 to be able to experience joy. 0:01:31.040 --> 0:01:33.840 Such an important message. Let's get started with today's message 0:01:33.840 --> 0:01:36.240 titled The Trap of Unforgiveness. 0:01:37.840 --> 0:01:43.039 My daughter was probably about 5 or 6 years old. 0:01:44.160 --> 0:01:49.440 We had rented a grade school called Davis School by 0:01:49.440 --> 0:01:53.400 38th and Kedzie because we didn't fit in our building anymore, 0:01:54.000 --> 0:01:56.440 and I had just finished up one of the services 0:01:56.600 --> 0:01:59.680 and an usher came running to me and said, pastor, pastor, 0:02:00.850 --> 0:02:04.610 They need you in the back. I said, who needs me? 0:02:04.650 --> 0:02:09.410 Your wife. So I said okay. He seemed a little panicked, 0:02:09.410 --> 0:02:11.770 and so I made my way quickly to the back, 0:02:11.770 --> 0:02:14.329 and I saw my wife, and she looked at me, 0:02:14.330 --> 0:02:18.410 big eyes, and she said, it's our daughter, Marissa. I said, well, 0:02:18.570 --> 0:02:21.970 is everything okay? And she said, well, look at her. 0:02:22.850 --> 0:02:26.970 And as I glanced over there she was, my five 0:02:27.010 --> 0:02:33.170 year old daughter, her head stuck between two bars. She 0:02:33.169 --> 0:02:36.090 had made her way up the stairs and stuck her 0:02:36.090 --> 0:02:39.010 head within two bars, but then she couldn't get her 0:02:39.010 --> 0:02:46.810 head out. There she was. Hi, dad. I said, Marissa, 0:02:46.810 --> 0:02:51.490 are you okay? I can't get my head out. And 0:02:51.490 --> 0:02:53.210 my wife was like, I think we're going to have 0:02:53.210 --> 0:02:55.650 to call the firemen. We've been trying to get her 0:02:55.650 --> 0:02:59.490 head out, but we can't. And I, I said, okay, 0:02:59.490 --> 0:03:01.490 let's try this. And one of the ushers said, we've 0:03:01.490 --> 0:03:02.890 been trying, but we don't want to hurt her. We 0:03:02.889 --> 0:03:04.810 don't want to cut her ears off. So we figured, 0:03:04.810 --> 0:03:08.650 I don't know. So, um, I said, alright, Marissa. So 0:03:08.650 --> 0:03:11.369 I lifted her up and and when I got her 0:03:11.370 --> 0:03:13.730 high enough in the bars, the bars, I guess, were 0:03:13.730 --> 0:03:16.089 a little wider and I was able to get her 0:03:16.090 --> 0:03:19.850 little head out, and she gave me a big hug. And, um, 0:03:20.330 --> 0:03:24.170 I thought it would be bad if she was there. 0:03:24.169 --> 0:03:26.290 A month later, with her head still stuck and we 0:03:26.330 --> 0:03:29.690 were feeding her, that would be a bad thing. Some 0:03:29.690 --> 0:03:35.130 of you today are stuck like that. Your head is 0:03:35.130 --> 0:03:40.490 between two bars, not metal bars, but your head is 0:03:40.490 --> 0:03:47.930 between the bars of unforgiveness. There's something about unforgiveness that 0:03:47.930 --> 0:03:53.050 traps us. Something about unforgiveness that doesn't let us move. 0:03:53.650 --> 0:03:59.090 Something about unforgiveness that when you're in the grip of unforgiveness, 0:03:59.530 --> 0:04:05.580 you can't experience joy very well. The presence of God 0:04:05.620 --> 0:04:11.180 is pushed away from us. We feel a numbness about 0:04:11.180 --> 0:04:15.980 our heart and usually a sense of anger in our spirit. 0:04:16.860 --> 0:04:22.420 Unforgiveness is a grip that needs to be broken in 0:04:22.420 --> 0:04:28.940 your life. Today is the final message on untangling relationships, 0:04:29.460 --> 0:04:33.060 and there's probably no better topic to talk about than 0:04:33.060 --> 0:04:37.060 the grip of unforgiveness. In this final message. So I 0:04:37.060 --> 0:04:42.180 turn your attention to Ephesians chapter four. There are so 0:04:42.180 --> 0:04:45.539 many passages in the Bible that talk about unforgiveness, but 0:04:45.540 --> 0:04:51.099 this is a very powerful passage by the Apostle Paul 0:04:51.100 --> 0:04:55.540 in Ephesians chapter four. The entire chapter of Ephesians, chapter 0:04:55.540 --> 0:05:00.979 four is about unity, relationships, interaction with one another how 0:05:00.980 --> 0:05:03.700 to use our gifts. But he ends up this chapter with. 0:05:03.740 --> 0:05:09.620 With two very powerful verses. I will begin reading in 0:05:09.620 --> 0:05:15.900 verse 30 of Ephesians chapter four. And do not grieve 0:05:16.940 --> 0:05:21.100 the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed 0:05:21.620 --> 0:05:25.620 for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, 0:05:26.339 --> 0:05:31.980 rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form 0:05:31.980 --> 0:05:37.820 of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another. Here goes. 0:05:37.980 --> 0:05:45.580 Forgiving each other just as in Christ. God forgave you. 0:05:46.620 --> 0:05:50.380 So here's the thing. If you are here today and 0:05:50.380 --> 0:05:54.780 you have unforgiveness in your heart, here's what I know 0:05:54.779 --> 0:05:59.740 about you. I know that you struggle with experiencing joy, 0:06:00.060 --> 0:06:05.109 real joy. You may have moments of happiness, but joy, 0:06:06.270 --> 0:06:09.350 that's not how you operate. Here's what else I know 0:06:09.350 --> 0:06:12.710 about you. I know that you will struggle with bouts 0:06:12.710 --> 0:06:17.990 of anger. Now, anger can be explosive and outward, or 0:06:18.029 --> 0:06:22.110 anger can simmer within and make you crabby and grouchy 0:06:22.110 --> 0:06:26.910 and moody all the time. I know that if you're 0:06:27.710 --> 0:06:32.270 wrestling with unforgiveness, it makes you feel distant from the 0:06:32.270 --> 0:06:37.989 presence of God so that that tangible presence of God 0:06:37.990 --> 0:06:41.990 feels like other people that can experience it, but you can't. 0:06:42.589 --> 0:06:47.070 And so if that's your case this morning, and if 0:06:47.110 --> 0:06:49.909 you really want to be free from it, you really 0:06:49.910 --> 0:06:52.070 need to listen up, because I believe that you can 0:06:52.070 --> 0:06:54.430 walk out of this auditorium today at the end of 0:06:54.430 --> 0:07:01.229 this service, having opened up the bars of unforgiveness that 0:07:01.230 --> 0:07:05.270 have kept you stuck for a while. There's three things 0:07:05.270 --> 0:07:08.750 I want you to understand about unforgiveness. Out of this passage, 0:07:09.029 --> 0:07:11.310 if you're taking notes, I want you to write this down. 0:07:11.310 --> 0:07:18.670 Number one, unforgiveness robs you of your spiritual joy. I 0:07:18.670 --> 0:07:21.989 want you to notice that the Apostle Paul says, and 0:07:21.990 --> 0:07:28.630 do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. He starts 0:07:28.630 --> 0:07:34.270 with a challenge. Some of you are grieving God because 0:07:34.270 --> 0:07:38.670 of unforgiveness. He gives us a challenge at the beginning 0:07:38.670 --> 0:07:41.430 of verse 30, and then he gives us a solution 0:07:41.430 --> 0:07:45.190 at the end of verse 32, forgiving each other. What 0:07:45.190 --> 0:07:49.510 does it mean to grieve the Holy Spirit? Well, the 0:07:49.510 --> 0:07:55.550 Bible talks about in first Thessalonians 519. Paul talks about 0:07:55.550 --> 0:08:01.360 quenching the spirit. In acts chapter seven, verse 51, Steven 0:08:01.360 --> 0:08:06.840 tells listeners to stop resisting the spirit. In Hebrews ten 0:08:06.880 --> 0:08:11.280 chapter chapter ten, verse 29, he says, you can insult 0:08:11.280 --> 0:08:15.760 or outrage the spirit, but only once in the Bible, 0:08:16.640 --> 0:08:21.520 once in the New Testament, do we hear about grieving 0:08:21.520 --> 0:08:28.000 the spirit. The New Testament was written in the Greek language. 0:08:29.040 --> 0:08:32.520 And some of you know that the reason it was 0:08:32.520 --> 0:08:36.160 written in the Greek language is the Old Testament was 0:08:36.160 --> 0:08:38.880 written in Hebrew and Aramaic. Some of you know this, 0:08:38.880 --> 0:08:43.080 but some of you are new to your Bibles. Greek 0:08:44.080 --> 0:08:49.120 was introduced into the ancient world through a man by 0:08:49.120 --> 0:08:51.880 the name of Alexander the Great. You may have heard 0:08:51.880 --> 0:08:55.280 of him. Uh, he was someone that by the age 0:08:55.280 --> 0:08:59.040 of 28, had pretty much conquered the known world. And 0:08:59.040 --> 0:09:03.199 everywhere he he conquered, he would hellenize them, which means 0:09:03.200 --> 0:09:07.480 he would bring the Greek culture to those areas. And 0:09:07.480 --> 0:09:09.959 so they had their own language. But all of these 0:09:09.960 --> 0:09:14.760 places also understood Greek. So Greek back then was what 0:09:14.800 --> 0:09:18.920 English is to the world today. It was the international language. 0:09:19.360 --> 0:09:24.880 So the New Testament is written in ancient Greek. The 0:09:24.880 --> 0:09:32.640 word for Greek is Lupino. Lupino is found in this scripture, 0:09:32.679 --> 0:09:36.760 only one time, related to grieving the spirit. And it 0:09:36.760 --> 0:09:44.000 means to cause to feel sorrow, pain, unhappiness, or distress. 0:09:45.760 --> 0:09:49.839 Think about this for a moment that if you have 0:09:50.240 --> 0:09:57.080 unforgiveness in your heart, you are actually causing the third 0:09:57.080 --> 0:10:02.089 person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit, to operate with 0:10:02.090 --> 0:10:08.450 the sense of sadness, distress or grief right now in 0:10:08.450 --> 0:10:13.610 your life. You say, well, pastor, why is that so important? Well, 0:10:14.570 --> 0:10:17.050 let me just explain the function of the Holy Spirit 0:10:17.050 --> 0:10:20.210 because he says, do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, 0:10:20.530 --> 0:10:23.050 by whom you have been sealed unto the day of redemption. 0:10:24.970 --> 0:10:29.089 The Holy Spirit, if you are a believer today, if 0:10:29.090 --> 0:10:31.209 you have given your life to Christ or had an 0:10:31.210 --> 0:10:34.689 experience where you surrendered your life to Christ and pointed 0:10:34.690 --> 0:10:37.450 to the cross of Jesus as the only way of 0:10:37.450 --> 0:10:41.570 forgiveness of your sins, and you repented and believed, there 0:10:41.610 --> 0:10:46.890 is something powerful, dynamic, supernatural that that happens at that moment. 0:10:49.010 --> 0:10:52.089 In John chapter three, it calls it being born again. 0:10:52.809 --> 0:10:55.970 Paul refers to it as you are a new creation. 0:10:56.809 --> 0:11:01.690 Sometimes we commonly know it as being saved. The point 0:11:01.690 --> 0:11:06.050 is that from there's a before and an after. When 0:11:06.050 --> 0:11:08.210 that happens, here's what happens. If you are a believer 0:11:08.210 --> 0:11:12.610 in Christ today and you are born again, you have 0:11:13.050 --> 0:11:17.050 the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Triune God, 0:11:17.050 --> 0:11:21.410 living inside of you. In fact, you cannot be saved 0:11:21.410 --> 0:11:24.570 without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It's the Holy 0:11:24.570 --> 0:11:28.010 Spirit that makes you saved. He's the one that redeems you. 0:11:28.010 --> 0:11:29.730 He's the one that comes inside of you. He's the 0:11:29.730 --> 0:11:33.890 one that lives within your body. First Corinthians chapter three 0:11:33.890 --> 0:11:37.210 verse 16 says, do you not know that you are 0:11:37.250 --> 0:11:41.730 God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells inside of you? 0:11:42.809 --> 0:11:46.010 First Corinthians chapter six, verse 19 and 20. Listen to this. 0:11:46.210 --> 0:11:49.370 Or do you not know that your body is the 0:11:49.370 --> 0:11:54.530 temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have 0:11:54.530 --> 0:11:57.610 from God? You are not your own, for you were 0:11:57.610 --> 0:12:01.300 bought at a price. So glorify God in your body. 0:12:01.300 --> 0:12:03.179 So listen to me. Well, if you are a believer 0:12:03.179 --> 0:12:07.699 of Jesus Christ and you are born again today, the 0:12:07.700 --> 0:12:13.579 address of God is your body. You say, well, pastor, 0:12:13.580 --> 0:12:16.100 I come to church and I experience God. Hold on. 0:12:18.220 --> 0:12:24.420 The church is a gathering of people where God dwells. 0:12:25.620 --> 0:12:29.900 You are a temple of God. Your body is the 0:12:29.900 --> 0:12:33.860 dwelling place of God. When wherever you go, you bring 0:12:33.860 --> 0:12:39.860 God where you walk. God goes where you drive, God drives. 0:12:40.380 --> 0:12:45.179 When we dismiss today, we are dismissing thousands of people 0:12:45.179 --> 0:12:47.740 that go into every corner of Chicago. And if you're 0:12:47.740 --> 0:12:50.500 born again, you are taking the presence of God, the 0:12:50.500 --> 0:12:53.460 manifest presence of the Holy Spirit with you. We're going 0:12:53.460 --> 0:12:57.459 into every nook and cranny of Chicago because the church scatters, 0:12:57.460 --> 0:13:00.860 but God doesn't stay in the building. The manifest presence 0:13:00.860 --> 0:13:03.300 of God is with you via the Holy Spirit. And 0:13:03.300 --> 0:13:06.620 so wherever you go, you take God in a powerful 0:13:06.620 --> 0:13:07.540 way with you. 0:13:14.300 --> 0:13:16.660 We'll continue our message in just a moment here on 0:13:16.660 --> 0:13:19.500 Bold Steps with Mark Jobe. And we've got a lot happening around us 0:13:44.020 --> 0:13:44.660 right now. 0:13:45.179 --> 0:13:46.700 And Wayne, oftentimes. 0:13:46.700 --> 0:13:49.900 It's in the midst of a lot of turbulence and 0:13:49.900 --> 0:13:54.699 turmoil that people start looking to the heavens in special. 0:13:54.700 --> 0:13:57.580 Ways. And I believe that we live in a moment 0:13:57.580 --> 0:13:59.860 like that. And I just want to say that as 0:13:59.990 --> 0:14:03.550 a pastor, I've been a pastor for over 30 some 0:14:03.550 --> 0:14:07.270 years in the city of Chicago. I have never seen 0:14:07.429 --> 0:14:10.870 the openness that I've seen now. That's incredible. I'm having 0:14:10.870 --> 0:14:15.110 these conversations, especially with young people. We've seen at our 0:14:15.110 --> 0:14:18.150 church over a thousand people come to Christ and get 0:14:18.150 --> 0:14:21.750 baptized in the last 24 months, mainly under the age 0:14:21.750 --> 0:14:27.670 of 35. Many that had no religious background and are 0:14:27.710 --> 0:14:31.230 just hungry for God. And I think the turbulence of 0:14:31.230 --> 0:14:34.710 the world has caused them to say I need something. 0:14:34.910 --> 0:14:39.190 And many of us as believers, we're getting too distracted 0:14:39.190 --> 0:14:43.310 by what's happening and not focused enough on the gospel. 0:14:43.470 --> 0:14:45.910 And so I want to bring your attention back to 0:14:45.910 --> 0:14:48.710 the opportunities that you have around you. That's what Bold 0:14:48.710 --> 0:14:52.190 Steps is all about. Well, when 0:16:16.520 --> 0:16:20.520 you were born, you're born physically, but you have a soul. 0:16:20.680 --> 0:16:23.680 You have a spirit and you have a body. Your spirit. 0:16:23.680 --> 0:16:28.800 Not not Holy Spirit, but your spirit is dead. Ephesians 0:16:28.800 --> 0:16:31.080 chapter two tells us that your spirit is dead because 0:16:31.080 --> 0:16:33.360 of sin. But when you come to God, he makes 0:16:33.360 --> 0:16:37.280 it alive. So the Holy Spirit interacts with your spirit. 0:16:37.720 --> 0:16:39.760 And as you live your life, when you sin, he 0:16:39.760 --> 0:16:42.840 brings you under conviction. He brings joy to your life. 0:16:42.840 --> 0:16:46.600 He guides you. He corrects you. He instructs you. He 0:16:46.600 --> 0:16:49.000 opens up your eyes to the Word of God. He's 0:16:49.000 --> 0:16:52.360 called the Paraclete, which means the coach, the trainer, the 0:16:52.360 --> 0:16:55.200 one that walks alongside of you. You have a personal 0:16:55.200 --> 0:16:58.440 coach living inside of you via the Holy Spirit in 0:16:58.440 --> 0:17:01.120 your body. That wherever you go, whatever you do, the 0:17:01.120 --> 0:17:04.479 Holy Spirit is there to guide you, push you, instruct you, 0:17:04.520 --> 0:17:08.520 help you worship. He cries, ABBA, father, when you worship today, 0:17:08.520 --> 0:17:10.720 when you were worshiping God, the Holy Spirit was saying, 0:17:10.720 --> 0:17:15.040 come on, worship the father. Come on, worship he's ABBA, father, 0:17:15.040 --> 0:17:17.439 lift up your voice. Do you sense his presence? Do 0:17:17.440 --> 0:17:21.320 you feel him? It's the Holy Spirit. When you're tempted 0:17:21.320 --> 0:17:23.520 to sin, the Holy Spirit convicts you. You feel the 0:17:23.560 --> 0:17:26.000 guilt of sin. You feel the tug of the spirit saying, 0:17:26.000 --> 0:17:28.400 that's not who you are, that's who you were, but 0:17:28.400 --> 0:17:30.800 not who you are anymore. When you open up the 0:17:30.800 --> 0:17:33.880 Word of God and start reading, the Holy Spirit enlightens 0:17:33.880 --> 0:17:37.000 your mind and he starts teaching you about the Word 0:17:37.000 --> 0:17:41.040 of God. So your spirit is inflamed by the Holy Spirit. 0:17:41.040 --> 0:17:44.680 So he teaches you about the Word of God. You 0:17:44.680 --> 0:17:49.160 have God living inside of you. You say, well, pastor, 0:17:49.160 --> 0:17:55.320 I don't understand that. Well, we worship one God, but 0:17:55.320 --> 0:18:00.369 we worship one God in three persons. Since he's a 0:18:00.369 --> 0:18:05.570 triune God, it's hard to explain. It's the mystery of 0:18:05.890 --> 0:18:11.050 what theologians call the Trinity. But the essence of God 0:18:11.050 --> 0:18:13.490 is the same God the Father, God the Son, and 0:18:13.490 --> 0:18:17.250 God the Holy Spirit. He's the same. So he's got 0:18:17.250 --> 0:18:21.170 the same essence. He's got the same heart. He's got 0:18:21.170 --> 0:18:26.330 the same essence of his being, but yet three distinct persons. 0:18:26.369 --> 0:18:29.929 God has always existed that way.
