Uh, 0:01:13.520 --> 0:01:16.679 but you know, Wayne, in this passage, the apostle Paul 0:01:16.680 --> 0:01:20.400 reminds us that there is a taking off and a 0:01:20.400 --> 0:01:24.039 putting on. You know, if you've been a been at 0:01:24.040 --> 0:01:27.080 work and you're working outside and you're all dirty, you 0:01:27.080 --> 0:01:29.119 don't say, hey, I'm going to change and put on 0:01:29.120 --> 0:01:32.240 a new a clean set of clothes over the dirty 0:01:32.280 --> 0:01:34.160 set of clothes. First of all, you have to take 0:01:34.200 --> 0:01:37.240 off the dirty set before you put on the new. 0:01:37.240 --> 0:01:41.200 And Christianity is that way. You're going to be eliminating 0:01:41.200 --> 0:01:43.920 things from your life, but you're putting on the new 0:01:43.920 --> 0:01:44.800 self as well. 0:01:44.840 --> 0:01:47.520 Putting on the new you. Here's Mark Jobe. 0:01:49.080 --> 0:01:52.600 Ephesians chapter four. I'm going to begin reading in verse 17. 0:01:53.320 --> 0:01:55.840 So I tell you this. The apostle Paul is writing 0:01:55.880 --> 0:02:00.000 to the to the Ephesian believers. So I tell you 0:02:00.000 --> 0:02:05.370 this and insist on it in the Lord. Now you 0:02:05.370 --> 0:02:08.530 know he's serious when he says, I insist on this. 0:02:09.450 --> 0:02:12.690 Have you ever been in a discussion or argument with 0:02:12.850 --> 0:02:15.970 a boss or a coworker or your spouse? And they say, 0:02:15.970 --> 0:02:19.610 I insist on this. You know that when they use 0:02:19.610 --> 0:02:22.610 the word insist that they're saying, I'm drawing the line. 0:02:22.770 --> 0:02:28.090 The line in the sand. This is non-negotiable. This is 0:02:28.090 --> 0:02:32.370 super important. So Paul is saying, what I'm about to 0:02:32.370 --> 0:02:38.570 tell you is super important. It's non-negotiable. What is it, Paul? 0:02:40.410 --> 0:02:43.010 I tell you this and insist on it in the Lord. 0:02:43.889 --> 0:02:48.450 That you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, 0:02:48.650 --> 0:02:53.610 in the futility of their thinking. When he refers to 0:02:53.610 --> 0:02:57.650 the Gentiles, he's not talking about an ethnicity. He is 0:02:57.650 --> 0:03:00.930 talking about people that do not yet know No God. 0:03:03.290 --> 0:03:08.049 And what Paul is saying, he's addressing believers, people that 0:03:08.330 --> 0:03:11.090 claim to be Christians, people that have the Holy Spirit 0:03:11.090 --> 0:03:14.210 inside of them. And he's saying to them, hey, I 0:03:14.889 --> 0:03:19.250 have an issue with you. And here's my issue. I 0:03:19.250 --> 0:03:22.250 know that you know, God, I know that His Holy 0:03:22.250 --> 0:03:26.770 Spirit is inside of you. But I insist that you 0:03:26.770 --> 0:03:31.769 stop living as though you did not know God. I 0:03:31.770 --> 0:03:36.090 insist that you stop living like your old self. I 0:03:36.090 --> 0:03:40.810 insist that you start living like you know God and 0:03:40.810 --> 0:03:45.490 that you like your new self. I've observed that some 0:03:52.730 --> 0:03:55.410 of us have lived so long in our old self 0:03:55.410 --> 0:03:58.650 that when we become our new self, we drag in 0:03:58.650 --> 0:04:01.100 a lot of the culture of our old self into 0:04:01.100 --> 0:04:04.020 our new life. How many of you know what I'm 0:04:04.060 --> 0:04:08.300 talking about? We've lived so long a certain way that 0:04:08.300 --> 0:04:10.940 now that we can live a new way, we're not 0:04:10.940 --> 0:04:13.060 sure we know how to live that new way. So 0:04:13.060 --> 0:04:16.540 we drag some of our old self into our new life. 0:04:17.900 --> 0:04:20.780 I'm told that to train an elephant. Now, I've never 0:04:20.779 --> 0:04:24.860 trained personally trained an elephant. I have a little Shih 0:04:24.860 --> 0:04:29.060 Tzu dog. Now I don't have it. It's my wife's dog. 0:04:31.100 --> 0:04:35.700 That I got stuck with. I, I promised my daughter 0:04:35.700 --> 0:04:38.660 when she was three years old. She said, daddy, daddy, 0:04:38.700 --> 0:04:43.580 can I have a dog? And I said, honey, no. 0:04:45.100 --> 0:04:48.700 But she had these big eyes and this little sweet smile. So when she was 12, on 0:05:19.500 --> 0:05:22.980 her 12th birthday, I had to get her a dog. 0:05:25.540 --> 0:05:29.060 I've never trained an elephant, and I can barely train 0:05:29.060 --> 0:05:33.540 the dog that we have. He's she's very unruly. But 0:05:33.540 --> 0:05:38.339 I'm told that when you train an elephant that what 0:05:38.380 --> 0:05:42.540 circus trainers do is they will take this mammoth beast, 0:05:42.540 --> 0:05:46.540 this beast that weighs tons and tons, and they will 0:05:46.540 --> 0:05:51.260 take a powerful, powerful stake and pull. And they will 0:05:51.260 --> 0:05:54.219 put it deep within the ground, and they will tie 0:05:54.220 --> 0:05:57.500 the foot of that elephant to that stake, a huge 0:05:57.500 --> 0:06:02.029 metal pole. The elephant in the beginning, when it's chained 0:06:02.029 --> 0:06:05.589 to that pole, will try to escape, it will pull 0:06:05.589 --> 0:06:08.270 and it will tug and it will roar, and it 0:06:08.270 --> 0:06:11.150 will run, and it will try to pull away from it, 0:06:11.150 --> 0:06:14.990 and it will go several days fighting against being chained 0:06:14.990 --> 0:06:20.270 to this pole. And finally the elephant will realize I 0:06:20.310 --> 0:06:25.630 cannot escape. This chain keeps me bound. No matter how 0:06:25.630 --> 0:06:29.989 much I try, how much I struggle, how much pain 0:06:29.990 --> 0:06:32.830 I inflict upon my leg to try to get loose, 0:06:32.830 --> 0:06:38.349 I cannot escape. So after a while the elephant stops 0:06:38.350 --> 0:06:43.990 trying to escape. It becomes used to being bound. It 0:06:44.029 --> 0:06:47.070 accepts the fact that I'm bound. And when I have 0:06:47.070 --> 0:06:52.150 the chain on my foot, on my foot, I cannot escape. 0:06:53.270 --> 0:06:56.390 I'm told also that what a trainer will do once 0:06:56.390 --> 0:07:00.990 the elephant has that mentality that it cannot escape that. 0:07:00.990 --> 0:07:05.589 They can take a little tent peg, a small tent peg, 0:07:06.150 --> 0:07:08.510 and they can put it in the ground and put 0:07:08.510 --> 0:07:12.830 the chain onto the the hoof of this big animal. 0:07:12.950 --> 0:07:17.390 And although the elephant could easily pull that little tent 0:07:17.430 --> 0:07:20.870 peg out of the ground, the elephant doesn't try. Because 0:07:20.870 --> 0:07:24.790 the elephant feels like I'm bound. The chain makes me bound. 0:07:24.830 --> 0:07:27.630 It's so used to be bound that even when it 0:07:27.630 --> 0:07:32.190 can escape, it does not because it thinks I can't escape. 0:07:32.190 --> 0:07:37.350 It's the way things are. There's so many of us 0:07:37.350 --> 0:07:41.190 have lived so long in our old life, so many 0:07:41.190 --> 0:07:45.470 years in the old self that once we are set free, 0:07:45.470 --> 0:07:49.510 we're somewhat like that elephant. We're so used to being bound, 0:07:49.550 --> 0:07:52.390 so used to being chained, that even though now we 0:07:52.390 --> 0:07:55.950 have the power to be set free, even though now 0:07:55.950 --> 0:08:00.640 we have the ability to run and be released, We 0:08:00.640 --> 0:08:05.040 stay bound by something that cannot bind us. We say 0:08:05.040 --> 0:08:09.640 entrapped by things that cannot hold us down. We act 0:08:09.640 --> 0:08:13.720 as though we are slaves when we're not. We live 0:08:13.760 --> 0:08:17.880 as though we're still bound to the old lifestyle when 0:08:17.880 --> 0:08:22.680 we're actually set free. This afternoon, I want to talk 0:08:22.680 --> 0:08:25.480 to you about what it means to put on the 0:08:25.480 --> 0:08:29.760 new you, creating the image of God so that you 0:08:29.760 --> 0:08:33.320 can walk in the freedom that God has called you to. 0:08:35.040 --> 0:08:37.000 I tell you this and insist on the Lord, that 0:08:37.000 --> 0:08:40.880 you must no longer live as the Gentiles in the 0:08:40.880 --> 0:08:46.319 futility of their thinking. Paul tells us that the Gentiles, 0:08:46.320 --> 0:08:49.840 the people without God, they live the way they do 0:08:49.840 --> 0:08:56.120 because they think a certain way. Thinking determines behavior. If 0:08:56.120 --> 0:08:59.400 you think a certain way, you will behave a certain way. 0:08:59.760 --> 0:09:03.520 And he goes on to describe what a mind without 0:09:03.520 --> 0:09:06.600 God thinks like. And so in the next few verses 0:09:06.600 --> 0:09:12.280 and verses 18 through 19, he describes what a person's 0:09:12.280 --> 0:09:15.480 mind is like when they do not have God in 0:09:15.520 --> 0:09:20.079 their life. Notice what he says. He says they are 0:09:20.120 --> 0:09:24.800 darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God, 0:09:24.840 --> 0:09:28.120 because the ignorance that is in them due to the 0:09:28.120 --> 0:09:33.000 hardening of their hearts. He says when someone doesn't have 0:09:33.000 --> 0:09:36.600 God in their life, their mind, the way they think 0:09:36.600 --> 0:09:40.880 is darkened because they don't have the light switch of God. 0:09:41.880 --> 0:09:44.360 There's something that happens when you come to know God, 0:09:44.720 --> 0:09:47.000 and the Spirit of God comes inside of you. It's 0:09:47.000 --> 0:09:49.880 almost like a light switch goes on and you see 0:09:49.920 --> 0:09:53.240 right from wrong. You understand things that you did not 0:09:53.240 --> 0:09:57.319 understand before. Why? It's the light of God. You experience 0:09:57.320 --> 0:10:00.809 that the light switch goes on and you realize this 0:10:00.809 --> 0:10:03.530 makes sense. Why was I living that way? I can't 0:10:03.530 --> 0:10:06.410 believe it. And once the light has gone on in 0:10:06.410 --> 0:10:09.810 your life, you look at other people where the light 0:10:09.850 --> 0:10:13.890 hasn't gone on yet and say, why don't they get it? 0:10:15.610 --> 0:10:18.050 I remember sitting down and talking with a young man 0:10:18.809 --> 0:10:23.010 who had come to Christ about two years earlier, and 0:10:23.010 --> 0:10:26.650 he was telling me, I just don't understand my family 0:10:26.650 --> 0:10:31.130 and my friends. Why can't they get it? I mean, 0:10:31.130 --> 0:10:35.290 it's so simple. It's so clear. It makes so much sense. 0:10:35.290 --> 0:10:38.970 The way of God. Why are they so blind? Why 0:10:38.970 --> 0:10:41.730 don't they understand? And I said, hold on, how long 0:10:41.770 --> 0:10:46.370 did it take you? I mean, up until two years ago, 0:10:47.090 --> 0:10:49.929 you were in the dark as well. When you're in 0:10:49.929 --> 0:10:53.130 the light, when you solved the problem, the problem looks easy. 0:10:54.090 --> 0:10:57.410 If you grew up knowing a different language. If you 0:10:57.450 --> 0:11:00.890 grew up knowing Spanish and you speak Spanish fluently. You 0:11:00.890 --> 0:11:02.890 look at people trying to learn Spanish and say, why 0:11:02.890 --> 0:11:06.569 don't they get it? Because it's easy to you. You 0:11:06.610 --> 0:11:15.570 got it already. But try learning Mandarin or Korean. If 0:11:15.610 --> 0:11:18.250 you don't know it, you'll realize how difficult it is, right? 0:11:18.290 --> 0:11:20.850 If you don't know it, then if you have it, 0:11:20.850 --> 0:11:22.809 you think it's easy. If you don't have it, you 0:11:22.850 --> 0:11:25.530 wonder why people don't get it. And so it is 0:11:25.530 --> 0:11:28.969 with the light. And so what Paul is saying is 0:11:28.970 --> 0:11:32.809 that people that do not have God, the light of 0:11:32.809 --> 0:11:36.929 God on in their life, yet they are darkened in 0:11:36.929 --> 0:11:40.930 their understanding, which means that there are certain things that 0:11:41.250 --> 0:11:44.690 they don't see because only God can show them. And 0:11:44.690 --> 0:11:48.410 so they're darkened in their in the way they see 0:11:48.410 --> 0:11:52.530 the world without the light of God. They're separated from 0:11:52.530 --> 0:11:55.850 the life of God. They don't have this intimate walk 0:11:55.850 --> 0:11:58.530 with God. They may know about God, but God is 0:11:58.530 --> 0:12:01.500 not a part of their existence and their fellowship and 0:12:01.500 --> 0:12:05.900 their life. And it says, and because of the ignorance 0:12:05.900 --> 0:12:09.140 that is in them, due to the hardening of their hearts, 0:12:10.380 --> 0:12:14.060 they're ignorant about certain things, not because they cannot understand, 0:12:14.059 --> 0:12:17.780 but because their heart is hard. Wow. And, um, 0:13:14.300 --> 0:13:17.300 technology has allowed us to do that. And I'm amazed 0:13:17.300 --> 0:13:21.580 when suddenly we get a email from Eastern Europe of 0:13:21.580 --> 0:13:24.620 someone saying, hey, I haven't found a church yet, but 0:13:24.620 --> 0:13:29.340 I listened to Bold Steps. Recently, someone told me that 0:13:29.820 --> 0:13:33.459 a doctor in Mexico had joined their church, and they 0:13:33.460 --> 0:13:37.820 got saved through bold steps. And I'm like, wow, this 0:13:37.820 --> 0:13:41.620 is amazing how seeds are just being shot throughout all 0:13:41.620 --> 0:13:45.620 the world. We know specifically that there are people in 0:13:45.620 --> 0:13:50.620 closed countries right now that listen in secret, because it's 0:13:50.620 --> 0:13:54.339 dangerous for them to be caught listening to Christian radio. 0:13:54.940 --> 0:13:58.140 This is an amazing time to get the gospel out there. 0:13:58.500 --> 0:14:02.710 There are close to 9 billion people in the world, 0:14:02.710 --> 0:14:05.950 and there are millions and millions of people that have 0:14:05.950 --> 0:14:11.550 very little gospel presence in their world. They are saturated 0:14:11.550 --> 0:14:15.510 with false religion, with heresies, with a lot of different 0:14:15.550 --> 0:14:19.470 ideology that does not allow Jesus Christ to come to 0:14:19.510 --> 0:14:25.270 the forefront. And so radio, podcasting, our technology as people 0:14:25.270 --> 0:14:27.710 can live stream, this is one of the ways that 0:14:27.710 --> 0:14:32.070 we get past the guards at the borders and we 0:14:32.110 --> 0:14:35.110 through the airwaves. God has given us a beautiful gift 0:14:35.110 --> 0:14:39.510 to go past the guards, into the houses, into the homes, 0:14:39.510 --> 0:14:42.950 and right to into the bedrooms and kitchens where people 0:14:42.950 --> 0:14:45.750 live so that they are hearing the good message of 0:14:45.750 --> 0:14:50.670 Jesus like never before. There's ignorance there in verse 0:15:49.360 --> 0:15:54.920 19 says having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves 0:15:54.920 --> 0:15:59.240 over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind 0:15:59.240 --> 0:16:03.880 of impurity with a continual lust for more. And when 0:16:03.880 --> 0:16:07.440 someone's mind is darkened and they don't have the light 0:16:07.440 --> 0:16:13.560 of God, yet they are awakened. Since they are spiritually dead, 0:16:13.800 --> 0:16:18.920 they are awakened to their to their senses, and the 0:16:18.920 --> 0:16:22.760 way they experience the world is through their senses. And 0:16:22.760 --> 0:16:27.920 sometimes that makes them give themselves over to sensuality. In 0:16:27.920 --> 0:16:33.040 other words, uh, people that don't have the spiritual light on, 0:16:33.760 --> 0:16:39.600 they give themselves over to sensuality. And that results in 0:16:39.600 --> 0:16:46.440 all kinds of indulgences and and promiscuity and sleeping around 0:16:46.440 --> 0:16:50.600 and getting drunk and high and whatever other senses they 0:16:50.600 --> 0:16:55.960 can awaken inside of them. And it tells us that 0:16:56.200 --> 0:17:00.560 they give themselves over to sensuality, to indulge in every 0:17:00.560 --> 0:17:04.399 kind of impurity. But here's the thing with a continual 0:17:04.440 --> 0:17:09.280 lust for more. Even though they throw themselves into these things, 0:17:09.280 --> 0:17:12.920 these things don't satisfy them. So they feel like they 0:17:12.920 --> 0:17:16.280 need more and more and more. It's like an empty barrel. 0:17:16.280 --> 0:17:18.680 They keep trying to fill it, but it stays empty. 0:17:18.680 --> 0:17:20.760 So they try to fill it more and more and 0:17:20.760 --> 0:17:25.040 more and more and it stays empty. I know a 0:17:25.080 --> 0:17:27.399 lot of people like that. I know a lot of 0:17:27.400 --> 0:17:32.840 people that throw themselves in the hard party life just 0:17:32.840 --> 0:17:37.440 to be filled and go from one party and drunkenness 0:17:37.440 --> 0:17:42.360 and girl to another, and just it never ends. But 0:17:42.359 --> 0:17:44.520 when I sat down and talked to them, here's what 0:17:44.520 --> 0:17:50.680 I know. There's a real hollowness and emptiness there. There's 0:17:50.680 --> 0:17:56.320 an emptiness. So Paul says, people that don't know God 0:17:56.359 --> 0:17:59.850 have this, this kind of thinking in their mind. And 0:17:59.850 --> 0:18:02.889 he says, here's the problem. Some of you know God. 0:18:03.450 --> 0:18:06.090 You have the Spirit of God inside of you, but 0:18:06.090 --> 0:18:10.729 you're still living as if you never met God. You 0:18:10.730 --> 0:18:13.970 have come to God. You have the spirit inside of you. 0:18:14.010 --> 0:18:17.090 You can change your lifestyle, but you're like the elephant 0:18:17.090 --> 0:18:20.450 that stays bound even though you can be free. You're 0:18:20.450 --> 0:18:23.330 not walking in the freedom that God has called you to. 0:18:23.490 --> 0:18:28.490 You're still living according to your old life. Your old 0:18:28.490 --> 0:18:31.770 life still dictates how you live, even though now you're 0:18:31.770 --> 0:18:36.210 a Christian, you're a Christian living your old life.
