But, you know, we've all been in a 0:01:16.600 --> 0:01:20.200 situation where we we we smell something. You know, I 0:01:20.200 --> 0:01:23.800 have I have boys that were involved in sports. And 0:01:23.800 --> 0:01:26.679 once in a while my wife would say, what is 0:01:26.680 --> 0:01:30.400 that stench when my son would come back from football practice, 0:01:30.440 --> 0:01:34.320 gym socks. Yeah. And he smelled like sweat and, you know, 0:01:34.319 --> 0:01:38.600 but this passage really refers to the fragrance or the 0:01:38.600 --> 0:01:42.679 aroma of Christ. And I believe that we all, in 0:01:42.680 --> 0:01:46.880 one way or another, smell like something. And for us 0:01:46.880 --> 0:01:50.600 as believers, the challenge is when people are around us, 0:01:50.600 --> 0:01:52.840 do they get the fragrance of Christ? 0:01:53.120 --> 0:01:56.440 This is a new series we're beginning now. We have a smell. Spiritually speaking. 0:03:48.090 --> 0:03:51.370 We have a smell. And you may say, well, I 0:03:51.410 --> 0:03:54.450 smell like everybody else. But here's the thing. I believe 0:03:54.450 --> 0:03:57.330 that a lot of Christians smell like everybody else in 0:03:57.330 --> 0:04:02.020 our culture. And everybody. And I have people have a 0:04:02.020 --> 0:04:06.580 tendency to say, well, everybody else is doing it or 0:04:06.580 --> 0:04:09.620 everybody else smells this way. But I want to tell 0:04:09.620 --> 0:04:16.460 you today you're not everybody else. Yes, everybody else may 0:04:16.500 --> 0:04:19.940 be doing it. Everybody else may smell that way. Everybody 0:04:19.940 --> 0:04:23.380 else may behave that way. But you're not everybody else. 0:04:23.700 --> 0:04:27.779 You are a child of the Most High God set 0:04:27.779 --> 0:04:31.460 aside by the power of God. Just as Christ loved us and gave 0:05:05.180 --> 0:05:09.620 himself up for us. Here it goes as a fragrant 0:05:09.660 --> 0:05:16.339 offering and sacrifice to God. So the Apostle Paul starts 0:05:16.339 --> 0:05:20.180 this passage. He's told us our identity. The first few 0:05:20.180 --> 0:05:22.780 chapters in the book of Ephesians, he's told us who 0:05:22.779 --> 0:05:27.300 we are, what our identity is. Take off the old. 0:05:27.339 --> 0:05:30.380 Put on the new. And now he's telling us, hey, 0:05:30.380 --> 0:05:32.500 if you've taken off the old and put on the 0:05:32.500 --> 0:05:35.500 new part of the new you, is that you don't 0:05:35.500 --> 0:05:39.140 walk the way you did before. Part of the new 0:05:39.180 --> 0:05:41.620 you is you don't smell the way you did before, 0:05:41.620 --> 0:05:45.940 because now you are the fragrance of Christ. In fact, 0:05:45.940 --> 0:05:49.180 look at what it tells us in second Corinthians chapter 0:05:49.180 --> 0:05:55.260 two verse 15. It says, our lives are Christ like 0:05:55.500 --> 0:06:00.420 fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived 0:06:00.510 --> 0:06:03.589 by some differently by those who are being saved and 0:06:03.589 --> 0:06:08.750 those who are perishing. Paul is telling us, now that 0:06:08.750 --> 0:06:12.870 you've come to Christ, you have to smell different, act different, 0:06:12.870 --> 0:06:16.630 live different. I think one of the problems that we 0:06:16.630 --> 0:06:19.589 have in our life here in the church in America 0:06:19.589 --> 0:06:23.750 and Christians as a whole, is that we've come to Christ, 0:06:24.750 --> 0:06:29.789 we've understood the gospel, but our challenge is we still 0:06:29.990 --> 0:06:34.950 keep the old on. When God has asked us to 0:06:34.950 --> 0:06:39.110 take the old off and leave the old behind. And 0:06:39.110 --> 0:06:41.390 I know some of you here are still struggling because 0:06:41.390 --> 0:06:45.469 you've come to God, but you still have your old clothes. 0:06:45.950 --> 0:06:49.470 Your old clothes still smell like weed, your old clothes 0:06:49.470 --> 0:06:52.909 still smell like partying. Your old clothes still smell like 0:06:52.910 --> 0:06:54.790 the way you used to talk. They smell like the 0:06:54.790 --> 0:06:57.270 old neighborhood. They smell like the old bars. They smell 0:06:57.270 --> 0:07:00.710 like the old habits. And God is saying, hey, that's 0:07:00.710 --> 0:07:03.070 the old Jew. So there has to be a taking 0:07:03.070 --> 0:07:05.789 off of the old and a putting on of the new. 0:07:05.910 --> 0:07:07.590 And so he tells us what it means to put 0:07:07.589 --> 0:07:10.270 on the new. Listen, what it tells us in verse one, 0:07:10.310 --> 0:07:15.270 be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, now 0:07:15.270 --> 0:07:19.030 that your children of God you take off the old 0:07:19.030 --> 0:07:24.630 Jew and you start behaving like your heavenly father, imitating him, 0:07:25.110 --> 0:07:27.830 and you live a life of love. Why? Because you've 0:07:27.830 --> 0:07:32.630 been loved, he says. As dearly loved children live a 0:07:32.630 --> 0:07:35.350 life of love. You say, well, how do I imitate God? 0:07:35.390 --> 0:07:40.270 It's so hard to think of imitating God because I 0:07:40.270 --> 0:07:44.790 can't see him. I can't touch him. He's not tangible. Well, 0:07:44.830 --> 0:07:51.390 God has come down to earth and manifest himself in 0:07:51.390 --> 0:07:56.310 Jesus the Christ. Jesus was not just the Son of God, 0:07:56.310 --> 0:08:00.350 but Jesus was God Himself. The Bible tells us that 0:08:00.440 --> 0:08:02.240 in the beginning was the word, and the word was 0:08:02.240 --> 0:08:05.080 with God, and the word was God. Jesus is not 0:08:05.080 --> 0:08:08.160 only the Son of God, but Jesus is God Himself. 0:08:08.320 --> 0:08:14.920 If you embrace orthodox traditional Christianity, you understand that Jesus 0:08:14.920 --> 0:08:18.840 Christ is all God and became all man and walked 0:08:18.840 --> 0:08:21.880 among us so that we could see an example of 0:08:21.880 --> 0:08:26.080 God living amongst us. And he says, just as Christ 0:08:26.080 --> 0:08:30.680 loved us and gave himself up as a fragrant offering 0:08:30.680 --> 0:08:35.280 and sacrifice to God, you and I are taking off 0:08:35.280 --> 0:08:39.319 the old, and we're putting on the new. Even though 0:08:39.320 --> 0:08:42.600 everybody else is living different than us, but we are 0:08:42.880 --> 0:08:49.040 not everybody else. So I want to ask you this question. 0:08:50.120 --> 0:08:53.959 You say, well, pastor, I still struggle. I still feel 0:08:53.960 --> 0:08:56.440 like I smell like the world. I still feel like 0:08:56.440 --> 0:08:58.920 I act like the world. I want you to ask 0:08:58.920 --> 0:09:03.920 yourself three questions as you look at your life and 0:09:03.920 --> 0:09:06.520 ask yourself, am I really living out the new me? 0:09:06.559 --> 0:09:10.880 Do I really smell different? Do I really live different? 0:09:11.400 --> 0:09:14.400 You need to ask yourself three questions. Number one, what 0:09:14.400 --> 0:09:20.120 are you tolerating in your life? You get what you 0:09:20.160 --> 0:09:26.280 create or what you tolerate. Henry Cloud, a Christian psychologist, 0:09:26.960 --> 0:09:29.439 made that quote and I believe it. You get what 0:09:29.440 --> 0:09:32.880 you create or what you tolerate. So what are you 0:09:32.920 --> 0:09:38.079 tolerating in your life? Listen, what the Apostle Paul tells us, 0:09:38.080 --> 0:09:41.960 he says, but among you there must not even be 0:09:41.960 --> 0:09:47.959 a hint of sexual immorality or any kind of impurity 0:09:48.080 --> 0:09:53.520 or greed, because these are not proper for God's holy people. 0:09:55.200 --> 0:09:56.720 I want to talk to you about a topic. I 0:09:56.720 --> 0:10:00.850 think that's a topic that's not talked about enough, That's 0:10:00.850 --> 0:10:03.970 not spoken about enough that we're not challenged on enough, 0:10:03.970 --> 0:10:08.689 but it's rampant. And some of you here are really, really, 0:10:08.690 --> 0:10:14.650 really struggling with big time. And it's the topic of sexuality. 0:10:17.450 --> 0:10:21.130 So the apostle Paul says, you know, now that you've 0:10:21.130 --> 0:10:25.770 come to Christ, you live differently. I know the culture 0:10:25.770 --> 0:10:29.690 around us doesn't understand us because we're a different kind 0:10:29.690 --> 0:10:36.050 of people. But he says among you, now that you're believers, 0:10:36.210 --> 0:10:41.610 there shouldn't even be a hint. A hint that means 0:10:41.610 --> 0:10:45.010 not even the mention or a hint, or any kind 0:10:45.010 --> 0:10:50.330 of shadow or any kind of inclination of sexual immorality. 0:10:50.370 --> 0:10:55.209 He uses three words. He says sexual immorality. He says impurity, 0:10:55.330 --> 0:11:00.130 and he says greed. And I want to just break 0:11:00.250 --> 0:11:03.410 this down for a second. And before I do, let 0:11:03.410 --> 0:11:06.770 me let me simply say this, um, because I know 0:11:06.770 --> 0:11:11.970 that anytime we talk about sexuality or sexual sin or impurity, 0:11:12.170 --> 0:11:15.090 it's easy to hear the church always say, no, no, no, 0:11:15.090 --> 0:11:18.610 bad bad bad wrong wrong wrong. Don't don't, don't. And 0:11:18.610 --> 0:11:21.929 I want to say simply about sexuality, first of all, 0:11:21.929 --> 0:11:25.850 I want to say that God is the inventor of sex. 0:11:26.970 --> 0:11:31.210 God made it up. God designed it. God created it 0:11:31.210 --> 0:11:35.209 not just for procreation, but also for pleasure. What a 0:11:35.210 --> 0:11:41.570 great invention God came up with. It was God's idea. 0:11:41.570 --> 0:11:44.370 It's not evil. It's not bad. It's not dark. It's 0:11:44.370 --> 0:11:47.650 not ugly. It's not of the devil, it's God. God 0:11:47.650 --> 0:11:52.850 created it. God engineered it. God designed it. In fact, 0:11:52.850 --> 0:11:55.850 I believe that sex should be celebrated. I think it 0:11:55.850 --> 0:12:01.740 should be practiced a lot, but Within the confines of 0:12:01.780 --> 0:12:07.220 a monogamous male and female relationship, where they've put rings 0:12:07.220 --> 0:12:10.660 on their fingers and said, until death do us part, 0:12:10.660 --> 0:12:14.780 we will love one another and love our children. That 0:12:14.780 --> 0:12:19.740 is the context in which it should be practiced. But 0:12:19.740 --> 0:12:24.980 like anything else, if it's not controlled and used and 0:12:24.980 --> 0:12:31.140 channeled God's way, then it becomes a huge destructive force 0:12:31.340 --> 0:12:35.339 within our culture, within our families, within our marriages, within singles. 0:12:35.340 --> 0:12:37.940 It becomes a huge issue that tears a lot of 0:12:37.940 --> 0:12:38.740 people down. 0:12:43.900 --> 0:12:47.380 Living within the God designed bounds. Everybody else does it, but 0:13:36.179 --> 0:13:41.140 you're not everybody else. And he says there should not 0:13:41.140 --> 0:13:47.620 even be the hint, the hint of sexual immorality, of 0:13:47.620 --> 0:13:50.980 impurity or of greed. Let me break those down for you. 0:13:51.020 --> 0:13:55.180 Sexual immorality. The word there is taken from the Greek 0:13:55.179 --> 0:14:00.630 word porneia. It means any kind of sexual activity outside 0:14:00.630 --> 0:14:05.270 of the confines of marriage. It means two young people 0:14:05.270 --> 0:14:12.670 in consenting sexual intercourse. It means homosexuality between two people 0:14:12.670 --> 0:14:16.630 of the same sex. It means someone that's married and 0:14:16.630 --> 0:14:21.230 decides to have an extramarital affair. It's called immorality. It 0:14:21.430 --> 0:14:25.390 means any kind of sexual activity, any kind of sexual 0:14:25.390 --> 0:14:30.990 encounter that's outside of the marriage confines is called immorality. 0:14:31.630 --> 0:14:35.190 Then he moves on and he says, in purity, impurity 0:14:35.190 --> 0:14:40.030 is not only just the actual physical act of sexually 0:14:40.030 --> 0:14:43.990 getting involved or sexual encounter, but impurity goes even further. 0:14:44.230 --> 0:14:47.310 And it's used ten times in the New Testament and 0:14:47.310 --> 0:14:52.870 it refers to immoral thoughts, passions, ideas, fantasies, or any 0:14:52.870 --> 0:14:57.070 kind of sexual corruption. And then he uses the word greed. 0:14:57.670 --> 0:15:02.760 Normally we associate greed with money, but greed has a 0:15:03.520 --> 0:15:07.640 broader implication than money. It refers to any kind of 0:15:07.680 --> 0:15:11.760 out of control desire for more and more that shouldn't 0:15:11.760 --> 0:15:16.880 be ours. In other words, an unsatisfied desire for more. 0:15:17.640 --> 0:15:20.280 And so what the Apostle Paul is saying is that 0:15:20.280 --> 0:15:24.000 the culture out there feels like it's normal. This is 0:15:24.000 --> 0:15:27.440 a normal culture. This is the way everybody does it. 0:15:27.720 --> 0:15:32.440 This is the way everybody operates. But you're not normal 0:15:32.440 --> 0:15:39.400 that way, he says, because these are improper for God's 0:15:39.520 --> 0:15:44.119 holy people. Do you realize that God calls you holy? 0:15:45.280 --> 0:15:50.360 The Bible says that you are God's holy people. Yeah, you. 0:15:50.880 --> 0:15:53.880 What this holy mean holy means that you are set 0:15:53.880 --> 0:15:58.200 apart unto God. That God has called you to be holy. 0:15:58.240 --> 0:16:02.040 God has chosen you, set you aside, and God has said, hey, 0:16:02.080 --> 0:16:05.119 the world may function this way, but you're not the world. 0:16:05.120 --> 0:16:08.400 Everybody else does it that way, but you're not everybody else. 0:16:08.400 --> 0:16:13.040 You are holy. You're called. You're peculiar. You're different. You 0:16:13.080 --> 0:16:16.720 have been called to be a special people set apart 0:16:16.720 --> 0:16:21.320 for God. In fact, the Bible also calls you saints. Well, 0:16:21.320 --> 0:16:23.080 I know some of you grew up in a tradition 0:16:23.080 --> 0:16:26.680 where you prayed to saints and you think a saint 0:16:26.680 --> 0:16:29.360 is a little statue with a halo that you touch 0:16:29.360 --> 0:16:31.760 the foot and used to pray to. But the Bible 0:16:31.800 --> 0:16:34.160 actually says, if you are believer, washed by the blood 0:16:34.160 --> 0:16:36.360 of Jesus, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, that you are 0:16:36.400 --> 0:16:42.320 a saint. So practice this for a moment. Just just 0:16:42.320 --> 0:16:47.400 say your first name to me. Now say out loud, Saint. 0:16:47.400 --> 0:16:54.360 And then your name. How's that sound to you? It 0:16:54.360 --> 0:16:56.840 feels a little weird to call yourself a saint, doesn't it? 0:16:57.320 --> 0:16:59.880 But let me tell you, that's what God says about you. 0:16:59.920 --> 0:17:03.320 Why not? Because you're perfect. Not because you're you've done 0:17:03.320 --> 0:17:06.800 anything extraordinary, but because the blood of Jesus Christ has 0:17:06.800 --> 0:17:11.919 washed you 100% clean. Absolutely. So that when you stand 0:17:11.920 --> 0:17:15.919 before God, he sees you as pure and holy and 0:17:15.920 --> 0:17:18.760 set apart before him. That's what it means to be 0:17:18.760 --> 0:17:22.320 a saint. And the Bible has declared that over your life. 0:17:26.880 --> 0:17:31.120 Now you may be here today and say, well, pastor, 0:17:31.480 --> 0:17:34.240 I don't really think there's a huge problem in this area. 0:17:34.240 --> 0:17:36.399 In our society. You probably don't. But let me just 0:17:36.400 --> 0:17:42.880 say that the problem of impurity, the problem of being 0:17:42.880 --> 0:17:45.800 really out of control, you know, I have a little 0:17:45.800 --> 0:17:49.280 dog and, um, well, it's really not my little dog, 0:17:49.280 --> 0:17:51.280 but I have to take care of it. It's in 0:17:51.280 --> 0:17:58.080 my house. And the little dog's name is Angel. Angel 0:17:58.080 --> 0:18:00.570 has to be on a leash. because if it's not 0:18:00.609 --> 0:18:04.210 on a leash, Angel just likes to go wherever. And 0:18:04.210 --> 0:18:06.690 so if you take your dog out on a leash, 0:18:07.609 --> 0:18:10.690 you sort of restrain it a little bit. But if 0:18:10.690 --> 0:18:13.250 that dog has no leash, it goes and it pees 0:18:13.250 --> 0:18:15.770 in people's yard and it does its thing in our 0:18:15.770 --> 0:18:18.530 neighbor's yard, which is not very good because it's a 0:18:18.530 --> 0:18:20.810 little bit out of control. It goes wherever. Let me 0:18:20.810 --> 0:18:23.690 tell you, God has created you as a sexual being. 0:18:23.690 --> 0:18:26.930 You have sexual desires. If you are here today and 0:18:26.930 --> 0:18:30.850 you're a man and you have the desire, uh, you 0:18:30.850 --> 0:18:33.370 have the desire to be with the woman, a sexual 0:18:33.369 --> 0:18:37.649 desire to be with the woman. That's not sin, that's normal. 0:18:38.090 --> 0:18:40.969 That's just the way that God created you. You have 0:18:40.970 --> 0:18:45.570 the desire for to to, uh, the desire of a 0:18:45.570 --> 0:18:47.930 male to see the body of a naked woman. That's 0:18:47.930 --> 0:18:52.290 not sin, that's normal hormones that God has given you 0:18:52.290 --> 0:18:54.770 a natural desire as a woman, to reveal yourself to 0:18:54.810 --> 0:18:56.770 a man and be intimate with a man. That's a 0:18:56.770 --> 0:19:01.180 normal thing, a God given desire.
