And 0:01:47.850 --> 0:01:50.850 there's one verse in it, verse 23, that has all 0:01:50.850 --> 0:01:56.370 sorts of issues in it. And I've really kind of 0:01:56.450 --> 0:02:00.150 worked with it. And I think the answer is clear. 0:02:00.310 --> 0:02:03.270 And so here's what we want to talk about is 0:02:03.270 --> 0:02:07.110 Matthew ten is the summoning of the 12 disciples by 0:02:07.110 --> 0:02:09.990 the Lord Jesus. They are given authority and sent out 0:02:09.990 --> 0:02:14.430 to preach by the Lord Jesus. And he tells them 0:02:14.430 --> 0:02:17.230 to go, preach, and to serve him this way, to 0:02:17.270 --> 0:02:20.710 be obedient and faithfully proclaiming him. And then he tells 0:02:20.710 --> 0:02:23.230 them only to go to the lost sheep of the 0:02:23.230 --> 0:02:27.870 house of Israel. Verse six. And so this is directly 0:02:27.870 --> 0:02:31.630 given to the 12 disciples. They are told at this 0:02:31.630 --> 0:02:35.110 point only to go to other Jewish people, the lost 0:02:35.110 --> 0:02:37.550 sheep of the house of Israel. And he tells them 0:02:37.870 --> 0:02:41.430 how long they should stay, that that they should obediently 0:02:41.910 --> 0:02:45.630 keep telling others about the Lord Jesus. He says, we 0:02:45.630 --> 0:02:49.150 need to keep telling people about Jesus, even if people 0:02:49.389 --> 0:02:52.790 don't listen. He says that in verse 14, if anyone 0:02:52.790 --> 0:02:55.830 will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake 0:02:55.830 --> 0:02:58.359 the dust off your feet when you leave that house 0:02:58.360 --> 0:03:01.040 or town, and he goes on to the next town 0:03:01.040 --> 0:03:07.680 and keep speaking. And then he says, we need to, uh, 0:03:07.800 --> 0:03:11.560 keep telling people about Jesus, even if our family rejects us. 0:03:11.600 --> 0:03:14.120 That's what he said to the disciples in verse 21. 0:03:14.160 --> 0:03:16.919 He says, brother will betray brother to death a father, 0:03:16.919 --> 0:03:19.840 his child. Children will even rise up against their parents 0:03:20.040 --> 0:03:22.480 and have them put to death. You will be hated 0:03:23.120 --> 0:03:26.600 because of this. And so even if a family rejects us, 0:03:26.600 --> 0:03:30.360 we have to stay faithful and keep telling people about 0:03:30.919 --> 0:03:34.320 the Lord Jesus. Verse 22 says that even people from 0:03:34.320 --> 0:03:37.840 all over the place persecute us. You'll be hated by 0:03:37.840 --> 0:03:40.920 everyone because of my name. And then he tells us 0:03:40.920 --> 0:03:45.480 to endure to the end. So keep on proclaiming Jesus 0:03:45.480 --> 0:03:48.080 to others, telling others about Jesus. Even if people get 0:03:48.120 --> 0:03:51.360 mad at us. And then we come to verse 23, 0:03:51.360 --> 0:03:54.000 and this is the problem verse that people struggle with. 0:03:54.280 --> 0:03:57.370 He says, when they persecute you in one town, escape 0:03:57.370 --> 0:04:00.490 to another. For I assure you, you will not have 0:04:00.490 --> 0:04:04.530 covered the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 0:04:04.570 --> 0:04:07.370 And people have actually called open line with questions about 0:04:07.370 --> 0:04:11.490 this verse. What is it talking about there when it 0:04:11.490 --> 0:04:13.730 says you're going to all the towns of Israel, you 0:04:13.730 --> 0:04:16.410 won't have reached all the towns of Israel until the 0:04:16.410 --> 0:04:19.810 Son of Man occurs. Well, some people say that this 0:04:19.810 --> 0:04:25.570 is referring to the ascension of the Lord Jesus, that 0:04:25.570 --> 0:04:28.690 the Son of Man comes before the father. I think 0:04:28.690 --> 0:04:33.210 that's kind of pulled out of context and not really 0:04:33.210 --> 0:04:35.529 what this is about. Some people think it's talking about 0:04:35.529 --> 0:04:38.970 the Second coming, that Israel will never be reached. All 0:04:38.970 --> 0:04:41.290 the towns of Israel will never be reached before the 0:04:41.290 --> 0:04:45.770 Second Coming. That seems, uh, a little difficult because this 0:04:45.770 --> 0:04:50.970 is really directed to the the 12 disciples, and it 0:04:50.970 --> 0:04:55.779 doesn't seem like this is something Thing that that that 0:04:55.779 --> 0:04:59.940 makes sense to think it's the second coming. And then, uh, 0:05:00.220 --> 0:05:02.780 other people say, well, this is the Lord saying that 0:05:02.779 --> 0:05:06.580 you won't reach the all the towns of Israel until 0:05:06.580 --> 0:05:12.580 the Lord Jesus returns in judgment. That's the idea that 0:05:12.580 --> 0:05:16.300 he will return in judgment in A.D. 70. That seems 0:05:16.300 --> 0:05:22.659 a little far fetched as well. And, uh. I, I 0:05:22.900 --> 0:05:30.620 would be reluctant to say that. And then, uh, uh, finally, 0:05:31.140 --> 0:05:35.180 I have a different idea. I believe what this is 0:05:35.180 --> 0:05:37.860 saying is you will not have covered. He tells the 0:05:37.860 --> 0:05:41.380 12 disciples that they will not have covered the towns 0:05:41.380 --> 0:05:44.580 of Israel before the Son of Man comes at the 0:05:44.620 --> 0:05:50.340 triumphal entry. That's when he presents himself to Israel as 0:05:50.339 --> 0:05:54.520 the Messiah. That's what the purpose of that Palm Sunday was. 0:05:54.520 --> 0:05:58.160 That's why they're saying save now. It's the presentation of 0:05:58.160 --> 0:06:00.800 the Messiah Jesus to Israel. And what is the Lord 0:06:00.800 --> 0:06:03.599 Jesus saying to the 12? He's saying you won't have 0:06:03.600 --> 0:06:07.680 completed the task even before I present myself to Israel. 0:06:07.680 --> 0:06:12.120 You still it just will go on and on. And 0:06:12.120 --> 0:06:19.279 the point of this is that, uh uh, he is 0:06:19.279 --> 0:06:24.560 saying that they are to keep being faithful even after 0:06:24.560 --> 0:06:28.960 they think their task is complete. They they haven't reached 0:06:28.960 --> 0:06:32.240 all the cities of Israel. The Lord Jesus now presents 0:06:32.240 --> 0:06:35.279 himself at the triumphal entry as the Messiah. Okay. We're done. 0:06:35.279 --> 0:06:38.920 We can stop. No. We can't. And I believe that 0:06:38.920 --> 0:06:41.839 there's two lessons right here. One, we have to keep 0:06:41.839 --> 0:06:48.200 proclaiming Jesus to everyone, even though it seems like, well, 0:06:48.400 --> 0:06:52.370 we've done the job. People know about this. Uh, no. 0:06:52.370 --> 0:06:57.570 He's going to return. And till then we keep preaching. Uh, 0:06:58.010 --> 0:07:01.289 but also, this is saying that they won't have reached 0:07:01.290 --> 0:07:05.330 all the the cities of Israel and and the villages 0:07:05.330 --> 0:07:07.930 and all the places where Jewish people are that they 0:07:07.970 --> 0:07:11.810 were reaching out to even after the triumphal entry, they 0:07:11.810 --> 0:07:14.210 won't have completed their task. And that tells me that 0:07:14.210 --> 0:07:17.570 we still need to tell Jewish people about Jesus. We 0:07:17.570 --> 0:07:22.170 need to keep proclaiming him, uh, until we see the Lord, 0:07:22.570 --> 0:07:25.850 until he either we die and go to be with him, 0:07:25.850 --> 0:07:30.410 or he returns at the rapture. That is what the 0:07:30.410 --> 0:07:34.530 promise here is. The the premise here is keep on 0:07:34.570 --> 0:07:41.010 telling people about Jesus. So opening question was how long 0:07:41.810 --> 0:07:45.210 should we keep on telling people about Jesus? We have 0:07:45.210 --> 0:07:49.450 to be faithful to the very end to keep on 0:07:49.540 --> 0:08:01.260 telling everyone everywhere we go about the Messiah, Jesus. You know that story, uh, Lazarus 0:10:38.850 --> 0:10:43.050 goes to be and is comforted by Father Abraham. And 0:10:43.050 --> 0:10:45.740 the rich man recognizes him. So they're both dead now. 0:10:45.740 --> 0:10:49.460 They're not in the same place. Lazarus is being comforted 0:10:49.460 --> 0:10:54.340 by Father Abraham. He's in his at Abraham's bosom. They're 0:10:54.380 --> 0:10:59.500 being comforted, but they recognize each other. They see each other. 0:10:59.500 --> 0:11:03.819 And then we have. So he's still 0:36:10.550 --> 0:36:19.510 keeping a Jewish practice there? Uh, he says also, uh, in, uh, 0:36:20.350 --> 0:36:25.670 acts 18, uh, 18. It says he had taken a vow. 0:36:26.230 --> 0:36:28.390 He shaved his head at Cenchrea because he had taken 0:36:28.390 --> 0:36:31.989 a vow. Apparently, Paul was still using the Nazarite vow, 0:36:32.350 --> 0:36:35.110 even though he was a follower of Jesus. Uh, other 0:36:35.110 --> 0:36:38.830 places it talks about that. He observed Passover. It says 0:36:38.830 --> 0:36:43.390 that we sailed in acts 20. Says we sailed from 0:36:43.710 --> 0:36:47.750 Philippi after the days of the unleavened bread. So it 0:36:47.750 --> 0:36:50.390 seems that Paul observed Passover and waited till the end 0:36:51.270 --> 0:36:55.430 of Passover to continue on. Uh, he said he was 0:36:55.469 --> 0:36:59.110 hurrying in Jerusalem in Acts 20, hurrying to be in Jerusalem, 0:36:59.110 --> 0:37:01.589 if possible, for the day of Pentecost. He wanted to 0:37:01.590 --> 0:37:05.790 celebrate Pentecost, one of the celebrations. Shavuot. It's called in 0:37:05.790 --> 0:37:11.040 Hebrew for when Jewish people keep these holidays. Uh. Uh, 0:37:11.080 --> 0:37:14.640 it's the feast of weeks. That's what Shavuot is. And 0:37:14.640 --> 0:37:18.439 that's what Pentecost refers to. Uh, it even says in 0:37:18.440 --> 0:37:24.799 acts 28, uh, or 27, uh, that, uh, Paul, it 0:37:24.800 --> 0:37:31.520 says in acts 27, uh, verse nine, since the fast 0:37:31.520 --> 0:37:36.120 was already over, Paul gave this advice. And what this 0:37:36.120 --> 0:37:39.080 means is that Paul obviously celebrated the fast, which is 0:37:39.080 --> 0:37:42.919 another word for Yom Kippur. Now, all this it says 0:37:42.920 --> 0:37:47.680 in acts 2817, I believe it is that Paul says 0:37:48.239 --> 0:37:51.240 that he calls the leaders of the Jewish community together 0:37:51.239 --> 0:37:55.240 in Rome, and he says that he has done nothing 0:37:56.160 --> 0:38:01.319 against the, the, the customs of our fathers. So Paul says, 0:38:01.320 --> 0:38:06.219 I kept all the Jewish customs, uh, And and I 0:38:06.219 --> 0:38:12.220 think that's that's important to remember. Uh, and so here's 0:38:12.219 --> 0:38:17.020 the point. Could Jewish believers, like Paul keep Jewish holidays 0:38:17.020 --> 0:38:21.060 and Jewish feasts and things like that? Absolutely, yes. Uh, 0:38:21.780 --> 0:38:24.620 the other question is, do they keep them exactly the 0:38:24.620 --> 0:38:28.300 same way as before? No, I think we have to 0:38:28.460 --> 0:38:31.700 do something else. I think we have to have them mechanized. 0:38:31.700 --> 0:38:34.620 They have to focus on the Messiah who is the 0:38:34.620 --> 0:38:38.180 fulfillment of all these holidays. So, for example, when Paul 0:38:38.380 --> 0:38:41.299 kept the fast, uh, Yom Kippur, I'm sure he was 0:38:41.300 --> 0:38:44.739 fasting for his Jewish brothers to come to know Jesus, 0:38:45.340 --> 0:38:49.339 not for forgiveness of sins. And I would say the 0:38:49.340 --> 0:38:51.980 same thing when I keep Yom Kippur, I fast, and 0:38:51.980 --> 0:38:54.780 I use my time that day to pray for Jewish 0:38:54.780 --> 0:38:57.420 people to come to know the Messiah. Uh, when I 0:38:57.460 --> 0:39:03.460 celebrate Passover, I don't just celebrate redemption from Egypt, which 0:39:03.460 --> 0:39:07.390 is a great thing to celebrate, but also redemption from 0:39:07.390 --> 0:39:11.069 slavery to sin through the Passover Lamb, the Lord Jesus. 0:39:11.310 --> 0:39:16.270 So can we celebrate these holidays? Absolutely, yes. But all our 0:45:45.300 --> 0:45:48.140 job is to point them back to the gospel. That's 0:45:48.140 --> 0:45:51.380 what I would do. Catherine, uh, keep it simple. Talk 0:45:51.380 --> 0:45:54.400 to them about the good news. The good news isn't 0:45:54.400 --> 0:45:59.640 that there's judgment coming. The good news is that Jesus 0:45:59.640 --> 0:46:04.600 died taking the punishment we deserved and rose again. And 0:46:04.600 --> 0:46:12.360 by believing in him, we can be exempt from eternal judgment. Instead, 0:46:13.120 --> 0:46:17.120 be forgiven forever. So I hope that helps, Catherine.
