And, pastor, 0:00:37.200 --> 0:00:40.960 I want to start with maybe a definition of praise, 0:00:40.960 --> 0:00:46.720 because I know in our culture today, we encourage those 0:00:46.720 --> 0:00:49.360 in our lives who do a good job. Pastor preaches 0:00:49.360 --> 0:00:51.600 a good message after the service. I'm sure people come 0:00:51.600 --> 0:00:54.520 up to you and say, great job pastor. You really 0:00:54.520 --> 0:00:57.040 moved me today. In a sense, they've praised you. Our 0:00:57.040 --> 0:00:59.160 kids do something great at school. We come home and 0:00:59.160 --> 0:01:01.480 we say, man, I am so proud of you. You 0:01:01.480 --> 0:01:03.280 did a good job. In a sense, we praise them. 0:01:03.280 --> 0:01:05.960 But I just heard you say God is the only 0:01:05.959 --> 0:01:09.720 one who deserves our praise. So how does that fit? 0:01:10.000 --> 0:01:14.520 Uh, well, when we understand there are several words in 0:01:14.560 --> 0:01:22.080 Hebrew translated praise. And when you look at each definition, uh, 0:01:22.080 --> 0:01:25.360 you begin to understand this one, I believe, is the 0:01:25.360 --> 0:01:29.920 one that literally means to boast about someone. And really, 0:01:29.959 --> 0:01:34.000 God is the only one that deserves our praise. When 0:01:34.000 --> 0:01:38.200 you when you look at the Hebrew words, there are eight, uh, 0:01:38.240 --> 0:01:40.800 different Hebrew words may be off on that, a number 0:01:40.800 --> 0:01:45.160 or two, but I believe this one literally means to boast. 0:01:45.360 --> 0:01:48.480 And generally when you look at the word praise in 0:01:48.480 --> 0:01:52.880 the Bible, it talks about, uh, somebody who is worthy 0:01:52.880 --> 0:01:57.320 of something, uh, that they've cornered the market on. In 0:01:57.320 --> 0:02:01.240 other words, uh, it's just a proper response Bonds to 0:02:01.520 --> 0:02:07.040 the majesty of God and the magnitude of God. I mean, 0:02:07.040 --> 0:02:11.200 it's really a proper response. So, I mean, I think 0:02:11.200 --> 0:02:14.120 I like the examples that you've given. We ought to 0:02:14.120 --> 0:02:17.519 give thanks to individuals for what they do. You did 0:02:17.520 --> 0:02:21.040 a job well done. That's praise to. That's giving honor 0:02:21.040 --> 0:02:23.880 to whom honor is due. But we need to realize 0:02:23.880 --> 0:02:30.000 there is a category of praise that none of us fit. 0:02:30.080 --> 0:02:30.560 Okay. 0:02:30.800 --> 0:02:34.200 Only he fits it. Yeah. You see? And so that's 0:02:34.200 --> 0:02:40.000 what the psalmist is talking about. He wants us to understand. Yes. Listen, 0:02:40.360 --> 0:02:43.880 this kind of praise, it only goes to God. So 0:02:43.880 --> 0:02:48.480 he'll go in and delineate things like the grandeur of God. Creation. 0:02:48.560 --> 0:02:52.120 None of us create anything. Yeah. You know, like like, uh, 0:02:52.120 --> 0:02:54.640 ladies will say things like, oh, pastor, you got to 0:02:54.639 --> 0:02:58.360 have some of my cake. It's my creation. It is not. 0:02:58.400 --> 0:03:00.950 Of course I don't say that. Yeah. But it is not. 0:03:00.990 --> 0:03:03.990 You did not create the flower. You did not create 0:03:03.990 --> 0:03:06.709 the wheat from which the flower came. You did not 0:03:06.710 --> 0:03:09.829 create the seed from which the wheat came, from which 0:03:09.830 --> 0:03:13.670 the flower. All you did was just take something that 0:03:13.669 --> 0:03:17.910 God had made, and then you took the ingredients and 0:03:17.910 --> 0:03:21.670 you made something, but you didn't create anything. Only he 0:03:26.950 --> 0:03:31.350 gets the praise for creation. He's the only one that 0:03:31.350 --> 0:03:35.230 gets praise for our conversion. So, uh, he's cornered the market on it, 0:03:41.470 --> 0:03:42.990 and we need to give him praise. 0:03:42.990 --> 0:03:44.510 All right, well, we're going to do that as we 0:03:44.510 --> 0:03:47.550 open up our Bibles to Psalm 65 and begin a 0:03:47.550 --> 0:03:51.670 message called The Privilege of Worship. Here's Pastor Ford. 0:03:52.350 --> 0:03:55.350 When I first came to South Shore Baptist Church, that's 0:03:55.350 --> 0:03:58.150 what we used to be. There were a couple brothers. 0:03:58.150 --> 0:04:03.230 I was a freshman at Moody and pastoring here. And 0:04:03.270 --> 0:04:08.550 there were two brothers who were seniors, and I respected 0:04:08.550 --> 0:04:10.589 them even though I was the pastor. I looked up 0:04:10.590 --> 0:04:13.270 to them because they were seniors, and I was a 0:04:13.270 --> 0:04:17.830 freshie at Moody. And one of them was named Brother 0:04:17.870 --> 0:04:21.270 Otis Agee. Brother Agee is in the presence of the 0:04:21.270 --> 0:04:24.910 Lord right now. Uh, but I'll never forget, uh, when 0:04:24.910 --> 0:04:29.030 I would call him at his home, here's what I 0:04:29.029 --> 0:04:31.550 would get. He would answer the phone. And at first 0:04:31.550 --> 0:04:35.070 I thought it was a voicemail. Uh, but it was him. 0:04:35.670 --> 0:04:40.349 And he would say, life is short. Death is sure. 0:04:40.589 --> 0:04:44.470 Sin is the problem. Christ is the cure. Jesus is 0:04:44.470 --> 0:04:48.670 the answer. So now what's your problem? I gotta come get you because you don't 0:11:46.700 --> 0:11:50.540 believe me yet. Yeah, but you and I. Oh, God. 0:11:50.540 --> 0:11:55.059 According to Psalm 65 one, praise waiteth for thee. That is, 0:11:55.059 --> 0:11:58.700 praise is fitted for God. He's the only one that 0:11:58.700 --> 0:12:02.780 deserves our praise. There's 0:13:45.540 --> 0:13:51.660 only one way you pay him. God will take praise. See, 0:13:51.700 --> 0:13:54.540 it says praise awaits you. Now the word awaits literally 0:13:54.540 --> 0:13:57.540 means silence. Praise is silent for you. And I like 0:13:57.540 --> 0:13:59.780 what Warren Wiersbe said. That doesn't make sense. But you 0:13:59.860 --> 0:14:02.860 got to go back to a better etymology of the word. 0:14:02.980 --> 0:14:06.940 He translated this way praise is fitting for you. It's 0:14:06.940 --> 0:14:11.380 a vow that I owe you. So he's saying, in essence, 0:14:11.380 --> 0:14:15.580 I owe you praise. And so the Hebrew word tehila 0:14:15.620 --> 0:14:19.220 say tehila is a word that's very powerful. Let me 0:14:19.220 --> 0:14:22.900 read what it means. It means to Lord God. It 0:14:22.900 --> 0:14:26.980 means to praise him in a hymn or a song. 0:14:26.980 --> 0:14:28.540 Let me read it. I want to read it. Here's 0:14:28.540 --> 0:14:31.140 what it says. This word is a noun derived from 0:14:31.140 --> 0:14:36.300 the verb Hillel. Hillel is from which the word Hallelujah! 0:14:36.300 --> 0:14:40.380 That's right, which connotes listen to this genuine appreciation for 0:14:40.380 --> 0:14:44.500 the great actions and or character of its object. It 0:14:44.500 --> 0:14:50.620 is used especially of the adoration and thanksgiving that humanity 0:14:50.620 --> 0:14:53.740 renders to God. I will bless the Lord at all times, 0:14:53.740 --> 0:14:58.860 and his praise shall continually be in my mouth. By extension, 0:14:58.860 --> 0:15:04.690 it also represents the character of God that deserves praise. 0:15:05.130 --> 0:15:07.570 So that what he's saying, and this is, is that 0:15:07.570 --> 0:15:12.170 we need to understand that by the very word, it 0:15:12.170 --> 0:15:17.410 lets us know that we owe God praise. I wonder 0:15:18.010 --> 0:15:19.610 because let me, let me, let me turn to it. 0:15:19.610 --> 0:15:21.410 I wasn't going to turn to it, but that's okay. Uh. 0:15:21.410 --> 0:15:26.050 Psalm 116 listen to what Psalm one 1612 through 14 says. 0:15:26.050 --> 0:15:29.210 Here's what it says. It says, what shall I render 0:15:29.210 --> 0:15:32.010 unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I 0:15:32.010 --> 0:15:33.970 will take the cup of salvation and call upon the 0:15:33.970 --> 0:15:36.250 name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto 0:15:36.250 --> 0:15:39.930 the Lord now in the presence of all his people. 0:15:39.930 --> 0:15:41.890 You see what he's saying? He said, how can I 0:15:41.890 --> 0:15:44.170 pay God back? I owe God, and I need to 0:15:44.170 --> 0:15:47.170 pay God. And that Psalm, he lists four things. We'll 0:15:47.170 --> 0:15:50.530 go there. But he says, I have to accept his pardon. 0:15:50.530 --> 0:15:52.810 I have to approach him in prayer. I have to 0:15:52.810 --> 0:15:56.730 adore him in praise, and I have to acknowledge him publicly. 0:15:56.730 --> 0:16:00.650 Let me say it again. Acknowledge him Publicly. So what 0:16:00.650 --> 0:16:05.370 is praise going on here today? It is where individually 0:16:05.370 --> 0:16:07.690 he been blessing you all week. And so now in 0:16:07.690 --> 0:16:10.610 the midst of the congregation, you want to come and 0:16:10.610 --> 0:16:14.930 give God some praise. Hey, I wonder how many of 0:16:14.930 --> 0:16:19.570 you came to pay a bill this morning? And understand 0:16:19.570 --> 0:16:23.570 you can't pay all that you owe in one payment, 0:16:23.570 --> 0:16:29.010 but you gotta make weekly installments. So every Sunday you 0:16:29.010 --> 0:16:33.170 coming in to make a payment to pray that God 0:16:33.210 --> 0:16:36.330 to let God know that you're grateful and you pay 0:16:36.330 --> 0:16:39.450 him with your praise.
