And so many people are used 0:01:01.800 --> 0:01:05.200 to the concept of going to a service and having 0:01:05.200 --> 0:01:08.360 a pastor, a rabbi, a priest to sort of do 0:01:08.360 --> 0:01:12.600 the holy things. But that's not at all the picture 0:01:12.600 --> 0:01:14.440 that God gives us in Scripture. 0:01:14.440 --> 0:01:15.760 That's not biblical Christianity. 0:01:15.760 --> 0:01:19.120 It's not all of us have gifts. All of us 0:01:19.120 --> 0:01:21.680 have a calling. All of us need to roll up 0:01:21.680 --> 0:01:26.039 our sleeves and say, God, use me. Let's get into 0:01:33.480 --> 0:01:35.360 today's message now with Mark Jobe. 0:01:37.080 --> 0:01:40.959 And there's four principles. I've distilled it down to four principles. 0:01:40.959 --> 0:01:44.840 I want you to remember, as we talk about releasing 0:01:45.160 --> 0:01:48.320 the power of God among his people. And I want 0:01:48.360 --> 0:01:53.000 to begin reading in Ephesians chapter four, verse seven. I'm 0:01:53.000 --> 0:01:56.800 reading out of the New International Version. It says, but 0:01:56.800 --> 0:02:02.370 to each one of us. That's us. That's people that 0:02:02.370 --> 0:02:09.050 believe to each one of us, grace has been given 0:02:09.810 --> 0:02:14.130 as Christ apportioned it. Now, let me stop there. To 0:02:14.169 --> 0:02:20.570 each one of us, grace has been given. The word 0:02:20.570 --> 0:02:25.490 in the Greek for grace is Keras. I've told you 0:02:25.490 --> 0:02:30.330 this before, but it's the word that we get charisma from. 0:02:31.610 --> 0:02:40.130 It's the word we get charismatic from. Keras means a 0:02:40.169 --> 0:02:44.490 gift that God gives us, that we can't earn, we 0:02:44.490 --> 0:02:48.850 can't deserve, we can't work for. It has nothing to 0:02:48.850 --> 0:02:52.209 do with how good you are or how bad you are. 0:02:52.370 --> 0:02:54.889 It has nothing to do with how long you pray 0:02:54.889 --> 0:02:57.250 or don't pray. How much of the Bible you read 0:02:57.250 --> 0:03:01.450 or don't read, how many sins you've committed or haven't committed. 0:03:01.490 --> 0:03:06.850 It has nothing to do with the quality of your lifestyle. 0:03:07.050 --> 0:03:10.930 It has everything to do. With what? With the good 0:03:10.930 --> 0:03:14.930 pleasure of God. So what he says is to each 0:03:14.930 --> 0:03:18.570 one of us as believers, people that know Jesus Christ 0:03:18.570 --> 0:03:21.370 and have His Spirit inside of us. To each one 0:03:21.370 --> 0:03:25.010 of us a keris has been given a gift, has 0:03:25.010 --> 0:03:30.050 been given a grace has been given. Not to some. 0:03:31.210 --> 0:03:34.410 It's not one, two, three. You get it? One, two, three, 0:03:34.410 --> 0:03:36.650 you get it one, two, three, you get it. No, 0:03:36.690 --> 0:03:42.810 it's to everyone. Every single person has received this gift, 0:03:43.890 --> 0:03:47.250 these gifts. It may be one gift. It may be 0:03:47.250 --> 0:03:51.290 multiple gifts. It doesn't really explain it in this passage, 0:03:51.290 --> 0:03:55.090 but in other passages of Scripture, it does. These gifts 0:03:55.090 --> 0:03:58.730 have to do with supernatural, what we could call talents 0:03:58.890 --> 0:04:04.460 or supernatural Abilities that God gives to you, not just 0:04:04.460 --> 0:04:07.740 for you to enjoy, but for you to use for 0:04:07.740 --> 0:04:12.060 the benefit of others. It may be the gift of encouragement, 0:04:12.940 --> 0:04:16.140 or it may be the gift of faith. It may 0:04:16.180 --> 0:04:23.060 be the gift of exhortation, the gift of mercy. It 0:04:23.060 --> 0:04:26.220 may be the gift of healing. It may be the 0:04:26.260 --> 0:04:29.619 gift of word, of wisdom. It may be the gift 0:04:29.620 --> 0:04:32.260 of administration. I mean, there's a whole bunch of gifts 0:04:32.260 --> 0:04:35.300 that could be given, but they are given to you, 0:04:35.339 --> 0:04:38.539 not for yourself. They're given to you so that as 0:04:38.540 --> 0:04:42.260 you use those gifts, you actually begin to build up 0:04:42.260 --> 0:04:45.539 in power. Help the people that are around you. Your 0:04:45.580 --> 0:04:51.860 gift is a gift to this body. So he says, 0:04:51.860 --> 0:04:54.060 but to each one of us, a gift has been 0:04:54.060 --> 0:05:00.099 given as Christ apportioned it. Verse eight. Now this is 0:05:00.100 --> 0:05:03.140 a bit of a tough passage here, so stay with me. 0:05:03.779 --> 0:05:07.299 It says this is why it says now. He quotes 0:05:07.300 --> 0:05:12.660 Psalm 68 out of the Old Testament when he ascended 0:05:12.660 --> 0:05:20.100 on high. When Christ ascended on high, he led captives, prisoners. 0:05:20.140 --> 0:05:26.099 Another translation says in his train or in his entourage. 0:05:27.020 --> 0:05:32.740 So when Christ ascended on high, he led prisoners in 0:05:32.740 --> 0:05:39.900 his entourage and he gave gifts to men. Quoting Psalm 68. 0:05:41.260 --> 0:05:43.859 Now Paul knows that's kind of difficult for people to 0:05:43.860 --> 0:05:46.339 understand what he's saying. So in verse nine, he explains 0:05:46.339 --> 0:05:50.260 what he's saying. What does he ascended? What does Christ 0:05:50.300 --> 0:05:55.460 ascended mean, except that he also descended to the lower 0:05:55.500 --> 0:06:01.150 earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who 0:06:01.390 --> 0:06:04.830 ascended higher than the heavens in order to fill the 0:06:04.830 --> 0:06:11.070 whole universe. Now what is Paul saying? Paul is giving 0:06:11.070 --> 0:06:17.470 us the image of Christ as a victorious conqueror. When 0:06:17.470 --> 0:06:20.390 when a warrior goes off to war and he wins 0:06:20.390 --> 0:06:23.870 the battle, he gets to keep the spoils of the 0:06:23.870 --> 0:06:26.910 battle that he's won and he gets to take all 0:06:26.910 --> 0:06:29.990 the spoils with him. And then when he comes back 0:06:30.510 --> 0:06:33.550 to his own camp or to his own city, he 0:06:33.550 --> 0:06:37.870 distributes the spoils or the gifts that he has to 0:06:37.910 --> 0:06:41.470 those that he loves. Why? Because he's victorious. And now 0:06:41.470 --> 0:06:45.350 he can share in his victory. The image that he 0:06:45.350 --> 0:06:51.150 gives us is Jesus coming to earth victorious, being put 0:06:51.150 --> 0:06:55.230 to death, descending to the lower regions, which means he 0:06:55.230 --> 0:07:01.630 was buried, resurrecting on the third day, uh, after 40 days. 0:07:01.630 --> 0:07:05.990 The Bible says that the disciples were gathered around and 0:07:05.990 --> 0:07:13.910 Jesus levitated. Wouldn't that been fun to watch? They're there 0:07:13.910 --> 0:07:19.550 around him, and Jesus starts levitating off the earth. Slowly 0:07:19.670 --> 0:07:28.510 he's rising. Floating. He stops as the disciples stand there 0:07:28.510 --> 0:07:33.830 with their mouths open wide like, hey, Jesus, just did 0:07:33.830 --> 0:07:37.630 this balloon disappearing act on us? Now what are we 0:07:37.630 --> 0:07:41.230 supposed to do here? And as they stand there with 0:07:41.230 --> 0:07:43.870 their mouths open, an angel says to him, why do 0:07:43.870 --> 0:07:51.030 you stand there with your mouths open wide? This Jesus 0:07:51.990 --> 0:07:57.030 that has now ascended will in the same way descend 0:07:57.950 --> 0:08:03.240 when he comes again. And he left. When Jesus was 0:08:03.240 --> 0:08:09.080 in the grave, he defeated. He defeated the power of sin, 0:08:09.320 --> 0:08:12.880 the power of death, and the power of demons and 0:08:12.880 --> 0:08:18.120 powers and principalities. Because only if you have sinned can 0:08:18.160 --> 0:08:24.440 the grave keep you down. Uh, you know, theologically, you 0:08:24.440 --> 0:08:28.000 need to understand that the reason that Jesus rose from 0:08:28.000 --> 0:08:32.280 the grave is that Jesus had no sin. He was sinless. 0:08:32.559 --> 0:08:37.040 So therefore the grave could not tie him down. There 0:08:37.040 --> 0:08:42.679 was no power in death because he was sinless. So 0:08:42.679 --> 0:08:46.719 he raised on the third day, and he ascended to heaven. 0:08:46.720 --> 0:08:49.480 And he sits at the right hand of the father, 0:08:49.960 --> 0:08:55.319 placing all principalities and rulers and everything under his feet. 0:08:55.320 --> 0:09:00.520 And because he's victorious and he's conquered death and Satan 0:09:00.520 --> 0:09:04.360 and sin and disease. He's conquered all of that. He 0:09:04.360 --> 0:09:07.199 has the ability and the power to give gifts to 0:09:07.240 --> 0:09:12.760 whoever he wants to give gifts. Why? Because he is victorious. Man, 0:09:19.400 --> 0:09:23.360 it would have been so cool just to hear Jesus, 0:09:24.280 --> 0:09:28.800 to walk beside him, see what he looks like. What 0:09:28.800 --> 0:09:32.240 did his voice sound like? It would have been so 0:09:32.240 --> 0:09:35.120 cool just to sit at the feet of Jesus and say, hey, Jesus, 0:09:35.120 --> 0:09:40.240 I got four questions. I just wondered, you know, since 0:09:40.440 --> 0:09:43.400 Adam was never born, really, since he was created, did 0:09:43.400 --> 0:09:46.560 he have a belly button or whatever question you may 0:09:46.600 --> 0:09:49.160 ask him? So you got a better one than that? 0:09:49.760 --> 0:09:53.120 And I know people that really think that they would 0:09:53.120 --> 0:09:57.160 love to have lived when Jesus was on earth. But 0:09:57.160 --> 0:10:00.450 here's the thing. It tells us in John chapter 15 0:10:00.450 --> 0:10:05.210 and 16. That the reason that Jesus left Jesus said, 0:10:05.210 --> 0:10:09.850 I must go because if I go, I will send 0:10:09.850 --> 0:10:13.530 to you. Oh, I will send to you the helper, 0:10:14.330 --> 0:10:20.410 the Paraclete, the advocate, the one that walks alongside of you, 0:10:20.450 --> 0:10:25.570 your own personal coach, as long as I am on earth. Listen, 0:10:25.570 --> 0:10:28.410 if Jesus were on earth today, you know he would 0:10:28.410 --> 0:10:30.610 have 12 apostles. And I know some of you think 0:10:30.610 --> 0:10:33.010 that he would choose you as an apostle, but okay, 0:10:33.010 --> 0:10:37.330 let's just say he didn't choose you. Then there's some crowd. 0:10:37.650 --> 0:10:40.250 Believe me, you wouldn't be palling around with Jesus. You'd 0:10:40.290 --> 0:10:43.210 be at the back of some crowd saying, Jesus over here! 0:10:44.210 --> 0:10:47.050 And he'd hard to get access to Jesus if he 0:10:47.050 --> 0:10:51.610 were physically here. So Jesus left so that you would 0:10:51.610 --> 0:10:54.890 not have to have that problem. So every believer that 0:10:54.890 --> 0:10:58.890 would come thousands upon thousands, upon thousands upon ten thousands 0:10:58.890 --> 0:11:02.450 of believers that would come after him would have direct 0:11:02.450 --> 0:11:07.329 access to him, so that now, via the Holy Spirit, 0:11:07.570 --> 0:11:12.910 the Spirit of Jesus is in every single believer 24 0:11:12.910 --> 0:11:18.330 hours a day. Coaching, empowering, guiding, giving wisdom. He's there 0:11:18.330 --> 0:11:20.610 when you go to sleep and there when you get up. 0:11:20.610 --> 0:11:23.370 He's there when you ride the El and he's there 0:11:23.370 --> 0:11:26.610 when you drive in traffic. He's there when you're at 0:11:26.610 --> 0:11:29.410 a bears game and a Bulls game, he's there when 0:11:29.410 --> 0:11:31.970 you're in the kitchen and he's there when you're in 0:11:31.970 --> 0:11:35.490 the office. He's there. He's there all of the time. 0:11:37.090 --> 0:11:40.050 It's a powerful thing to have the presence of Christ 0:11:40.050 --> 0:11:43.329 inside of you. And that's why Jesus left, so that 0:11:43.330 --> 0:11:46.410 the presence of Christ would be inside of us. So let's get back to the message. 0:14:16.230 --> 0:14:18.470 The second thing that Paul tells us to remember is 0:14:18.470 --> 0:14:20.390 not only that each of us has been given a 0:14:20.390 --> 0:14:24.190 special gift that we have not earned or deserve. But 0:14:24.190 --> 0:14:29.630 then he also goes on to tell us that we 0:14:29.630 --> 0:14:33.190 need to remember that the leadership gifts. Oh, I wish 0:14:33.190 --> 0:14:35.950 you could hear me. This is really huge that the 0:14:35.950 --> 0:14:41.750 leadership gifts are given not to do the work of ministry, 0:14:42.110 --> 0:14:46.590 but to empower or to equip the people to do 0:14:46.590 --> 0:14:52.190 the work of ministry. Okay, I'm about to show you 0:14:52.230 --> 0:14:56.590 one of the biggest lies that is affected Christianity down 0:14:56.590 --> 0:15:04.359 through centuries of existence. Notice what he says. Open your Bibles. 0:15:05.400 --> 0:15:10.680 Let's start with verse 11. It was he who gave some. 0:15:11.720 --> 0:15:15.240 He's talking about giving gifts to the body. Everybody has 0:15:15.240 --> 0:15:18.040 a gift. And now he says he's also given the 0:15:18.080 --> 0:15:22.520 gift of leaders to the church. And he lists five 0:15:22.560 --> 0:15:26.680 leadership offices or callings that he's given to the church. 0:15:27.200 --> 0:15:31.400 Some people call this the five fold ministry. He says, 0:15:31.400 --> 0:15:35.680 and he's given some to be apostles, some to be prophets, 0:15:35.960 --> 0:15:40.080 some to be evangelists, some to be pastors, and some 0:15:40.080 --> 0:15:46.040 to be teachers. Now these are callings that he gives. 0:15:46.480 --> 0:15:51.040 Each one of these callings are different. Trick question here. 0:15:51.680 --> 0:15:56.760 How many of you believe that there were only 12 apostles? Uh, 0:15:56.760 --> 0:15:58.760 since I said it's a trick question, you're not raising 0:15:58.760 --> 0:16:04.520 your hand. Okay, good. Because although many people believe that 0:16:04.520 --> 0:16:08.240 there were only 12 apostles, the reality is there's more 0:16:08.280 --> 0:16:15.520 than 12 apostles. In fact, the fellow that wrote Ephesians, 0:16:15.520 --> 0:16:21.360 the Apostle Paul, we call him what Apostle Paul now 0:16:21.360 --> 0:16:26.200 was a Paul, one of the 12 that walked with Jesus. No, 0:16:27.080 --> 0:16:31.440 Paul wasn't even around walking with Jesus when Jesus had 0:16:31.440 --> 0:16:34.479 his 12 apostles. He wasn't a part of the 12. 0:16:35.200 --> 0:16:41.040 In fact, it wasn't until Jesus was crucified, buried, rose again, 0:16:41.080 --> 0:16:46.080 ascended into heaven that Paul was even converted. He was converted. 0:16:46.080 --> 0:16:49.040 After Jesus was gone, he was on the road to 0:16:49.080 --> 0:16:52.360 Damascus and had this encounter in which he had a 0:16:52.360 --> 0:16:55.280 vision of Jesus. He fell off his horse. He was 0:16:55.280 --> 0:16:59.120 converted radically. And then he became an apostle. And so 0:16:59.120 --> 0:17:02.400 they called him the Apostle Paul. So what I want 0:17:02.400 --> 0:17:05.119 you to understand is that there's more than 12 apostles. 0:17:05.119 --> 0:17:07.639 There was more than just Paul. There were other apostles 0:17:07.640 --> 0:17:12.400 and scriptures as well. So what is an apostle? The 0:17:12.400 --> 0:17:16.480 word apostle means sent with a message. There are some 0:17:16.480 --> 0:17:21.560 leaders that are apostles that are sent with a message 0:17:21.800 --> 0:17:25.879 to start what the Apostle Paul do. After he became converted, 0:17:26.000 --> 0:17:29.480 he started churches. He would go around. He did several 0:17:29.480 --> 0:17:33.920 missionary journeys. He started churches, raised leaders, oversaw them. He 0:17:33.920 --> 0:17:37.240 grew the work, and then he appointed people to do that. 0:17:37.240 --> 0:17:40.680 That was an apostolic gift. So the apostles are sent 0:17:40.680 --> 0:17:43.680 out to start work in churches, appoint leaders, get them 0:17:43.680 --> 0:17:47.440 up and going, and they multiply churches. That's what apostles do. 0:17:48.520 --> 0:17:52.720 Then there are, he says, not only are some apostles, 0:17:53.400 --> 0:17:56.600 but then there are some that are prophets. What is 0:17:56.600 --> 0:18:01.930 a prophet? A prophet is someone that speaks, that foretells 0:18:01.930 --> 0:18:05.850 and foretells God's Word for that moment at that time. 0:18:06.250 --> 0:18:10.930 Sometimes it involves the foretelling, which means talking about future events, 0:18:11.210 --> 0:18:14.330 but sometimes it just involves, hey, this is what God 0:18:14.330 --> 0:18:17.730 is saying to us today. Now. And you know that 0:18:17.770 --> 0:18:20.610 it's a it's a word from God for us at 0:18:20.609 --> 0:18:24.850 this moment and this time that we need to hear. 0:18:25.570 --> 0:18:31.410 That's prophet. And then he says, evangelist. Evangelist is someone 0:18:31.410 --> 0:18:35.090 that proclaims the gospel and recruits people to the cause 0:18:35.090 --> 0:18:38.890 of Christ. They do it with great anointing as they 0:18:38.890 --> 0:18:42.570 proclaim the simple gospel message of Jesus. Many people come 0:18:42.570 --> 0:18:46.210 to Christ and they have the ability to communicate it simply, 0:18:46.210 --> 0:18:49.490 powerfully with anointing so that many people come to Christ. 0:18:49.570 --> 0:18:55.050 So you have apostles, prophets, evangelists. Then he says pastors 0:18:55.050 --> 0:18:58.530 or another translation is Shepherd. What does a shepherd do 0:18:59.130 --> 0:19:02.220 or a pastor do. A pastor cares for the flock. 0:19:02.780 --> 0:19:05.860 They make sure that people don't fall away. They make 0:19:05.900 --> 0:19:09.460 sure that the hurting are cared for. But now we're sitting there 0:23:24.910 --> 0:23:28.710 voyeuristically sometimes looking at other people's lives and wondering why 0:23:28.710 --> 0:23:31.830 everyone's life is better than our own. And that is 0:23:31.830 --> 0:23:35.110 a problem, and sometimes it motivates our lives. I think 0:23:35.109 --> 0:23:37.790 of Ecclesiastes, and this is a passage that most people 0:23:37.790 --> 0:23:41.110 don't ever even come across or think about. But it says, 0:23:41.630 --> 0:23:44.950 Here's Solomon saying, I saw so much toil and skill 0:23:44.950 --> 0:23:48.030 in people's work that came from a man's envy of 0:23:48.030 --> 0:23:50.830 his neighbor. And I think to myself, sometimes we never 0:23:50.830 --> 0:23:53.750 at peace with what we have. We never enjoy what 0:23:53.750 --> 0:23:56.350 we have because we're always looking at other people on 0:23:56.350 --> 0:23:58.790 social media thinking, well, I've got to keep working till 0:23:58.790 --> 0:24:01.640 I can achieve that. And there's so many problems with 0:24:01.640 --> 0:24:04.200 that analogy in terms of how we're viewing life. It's 0:24:04.200 --> 0:24:06.600 not it's not reality. But we have to get to 0:24:06.640 --> 0:24:09.000 the place where we say, you know, this envy is 0:24:09.000 --> 0:24:12.760 stealing my contentment. It's stealing my joy. It's making me 0:24:12.800 --> 0:24:16.199 want things I don't have. Instead of really enjoying the 0:24:16.200 --> 0:24:18.720 things that God has given me.
