But then the promise 0:00:44.479 --> 0:00:49.700 is astounding. The promise is restoration. And I read from 0:00:49.700 --> 0:00:52.190 a classic verse that some of you know, I will 0:00:52.190 --> 0:00:55.580 restore to you the years that the swarming locusts have 0:00:55.580 --> 0:01:02.410 eaten the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, 0:01:02.440 --> 0:01:07.180 which I sent among you. You know, God will oftentimes 0:01:07.180 --> 0:01:10.030 allow us to sit in the pain of the locusts 0:01:10.030 --> 0:01:14.890 eating up our life. But God in his goodness holds 0:01:14.890 --> 0:01:18.399 out a hand and says, repent, turn around. It was pretty heavy. In fact, 0:02:00.630 --> 0:02:04.980 I was talking with my son, who's in Miami yesterday, 0:02:04.980 --> 0:02:08.400 about that very story, and I was just rehearsing with 0:02:08.400 --> 0:02:10.950 my son because it's good to pass along the power 0:02:10.950 --> 0:02:13.410 of God in our lives. Moses is is 0:26:14.520 --> 0:26:17.609 preaching a series of sermons to these children of Israel 0:26:17.609 --> 0:26:20.399 when they're about to go enter the land. He knows 0:26:20.400 --> 0:26:24.149 he can't go with him. He's not able to go 0:26:24.150 --> 0:26:26.040 and be a part of that. But he wants them 0:26:26.040 --> 0:26:28.590 to succeed. He wants them to do well, and he 0:26:28.590 --> 0:26:31.350 knows that for them to do well, it's going to 0:26:31.350 --> 0:26:35.280 be about their keeping the Lord first in their life. 0:26:35.280 --> 0:26:40.440 And so he goes through these covenant commandments with Israel, 0:26:40.440 --> 0:26:44.310 and he seamlessly moves back and forth between the you singular, 0:26:44.340 --> 0:26:49.050 like each individual Israelite, has a responsibility before the Lord 0:26:49.050 --> 0:26:52.320 to to keep their relationship with him first. But then 0:26:52.320 --> 0:26:54.420 in the next verse he'll switch to the you plural, 0:26:54.420 --> 0:26:57.149 that it's about you as a community, being faithful before 0:26:57.150 --> 0:26:59.520 the Lord as well. And it's just a great reminder 0:26:59.520 --> 0:27:02.699 for us that just like in Israel in the Old Testament, 0:27:02.700 --> 0:27:05.580 the people of God, the church today, we are saved 0:27:05.580 --> 0:27:09.000 as individuals. We have an individual relationship with God, a 0:27:09.060 --> 0:27:12.750 responsibility before him, but were also saved into a community. 0:27:12.780 --> 0:27:16.859 It's about the church and and the church being faithful 0:27:16.859 --> 0:27:19.139 to live before God as well. For someone who 0:27:34.890 --> 0:27:38.639 maybe is newer to Bible reading or who struggles with 0:27:38.640 --> 0:27:42.690 some of the Old Testament reading, why so many rules? 0:27:42.810 --> 0:27:45.240 The first thing I'd want to say is, as followers 0:27:45.240 --> 0:27:48.000 of the Lord Jesus today, we're not under the mosaic covenant. 0:27:48.000 --> 0:27:52.410 This is not not our covenant directly. And so we 0:27:52.410 --> 0:27:55.439 might think, well then why are we reading this? And 0:27:55.440 --> 0:27:58.740 it is still God's revelation to us. It reveals God's 0:27:58.740 --> 0:28:01.109 heart to us, and we can look at even though 0:28:01.109 --> 0:28:03.179 we're not directly under those laws, we can look at 0:28:03.180 --> 0:28:06.210 the principles that they're based on as a source of 0:28:06.210 --> 0:28:08.510 authority and wisdom for our own lives today. There's many 0:28:08.510 --> 0:28:11.210 examples of that, but I think sometimes we get off 0:28:11.210 --> 0:28:13.669 on the wrong foot because we think about these laws 0:28:13.700 --> 0:28:16.700 in the wrong way. We might think about them as 0:28:16.700 --> 0:28:20.810 legalistic as if in the Old Testament, God only really 0:28:20.810 --> 0:28:24.410 wanted Israel to check the boxes off of this external obedience. 0:28:24.890 --> 0:28:28.160 I think a better way of thinking about it is 0:28:28.160 --> 0:28:32.000 like a marriage relationship. So when when my wife and 0:28:32.000 --> 0:28:34.580 I got married, we made these vows to each other 0:28:34.580 --> 0:28:37.580 that were really significant right to have and to hold, 0:28:37.609 --> 0:28:40.880 to be faithful to each other till death do us part. 0:28:40.880 --> 0:28:45.380 And I never once thought, you know, that's so legalistic. 0:28:45.410 --> 0:28:46.250 Like. 0:28:46.520 --> 0:28:49.370 My wife is only in my relationship with me because she, 0:28:49.400 --> 0:28:52.910 you know, would check these boxes off or whatever. But hold on a second. Don't think 0:29:53.410 --> 0:29:56.890 you're all that in a bag of chips. He says, you, you, 0:29:56.920 --> 0:30:00.010 you are stubborn of heart, and it's not because of 0:30:00.010 --> 0:30:05.250 your righteousness, but it's because of the Absolute godlessness of 0:30:05.250 --> 0:30:10.830 the Canaanites. The book of Deuteronomy. Although, yes, under the 0:30:10.830 --> 0:30:16.050 mosaic covenant, boy, it's just take that little passage. It 0:30:16.050 --> 0:30:19.350 is so relevant to us. God is merciful when we 0:30:19.350 --> 0:30:21.450 are not perfect. Right? Doc? 0:30:21.540 --> 0:30:25.650 Yeah, you can see God's grace throughout the book of Deuteronomy. 0:30:25.980 --> 0:30:27.810 Just in the fact that God's in a covenant with 0:30:27.810 --> 0:30:31.080 Israel is itself an act of God's grace. But if 0:30:31.080 --> 0:30:33.360 you think of the context of Deuteronomy, Israel is about 0:30:33.360 --> 0:30:36.570 to enter the Promised land again. Moses can't go with them. 0:30:36.570 --> 0:30:38.010 And you think of what kind of advice would a 0:30:38.010 --> 0:30:40.440 leader give in that type of situation? Like you're about 0:30:40.440 --> 0:30:43.230 to enter this land, you're going to need to hold it. 0:30:43.260 --> 0:30:46.620 You've got to establish a nation. I might expect a 0:30:46.620 --> 0:30:49.680 book full of how to how to create a centralized government, 0:30:49.710 --> 0:30:53.460 how to have a powerful army. Yes, but for for Moses, 0:30:53.880 --> 0:30:55.890 he doesn't focus on that at all. He said it's 0:30:55.890 --> 0:30:58.979 about keeping your relationship with the Lord first. If you 0:30:58.980 --> 0:31:01.530 get that wrong, none of it, none of the other 0:31:01.530 --> 0:31:04.310 things matter. And in fact, if you are disobedient just 0:31:04.310 --> 0:31:07.100 like the Canaanites are, you're going to be judged too. 0:31:07.130 --> 0:31:11.060 Just like I'm judging them. And so it's God does 0:31:11.060 --> 0:31:14.390 a great job. Moses does a wonderful job of highlighting 0:31:14.390 --> 0:31:19.490 the priority of Israel's walk with the Lord as as 0:31:19.520 --> 0:31:22.190 what's really important for them to flourish as a nation. 0:31:22.310 --> 0:31:26.840 You mentioned the grace of God being reflected in this book. 0:31:26.870 --> 0:31:30.350 A lot of times we don't think about the graciousness 0:31:30.350 --> 0:31:33.620 of God in some of these tougher passages where there's 0:31:33.620 --> 0:31:37.880 a lot of talk about consequences for disobedience. Where do 0:31:37.880 --> 0:31:40.280 you where do you see the grace of God at 0:31:40.280 --> 0:31:43.100 work in this passage? And how can the grace of 0:31:43.100 --> 0:31:44.870 God transform our lives today? 0:31:44.900 --> 0:31:47.390 Yeah. So we just mentioned two things. And this is the way that I'm calling 0:32:02.140 --> 0:32:05.200 you to live. That is an incredible gift to be 0:32:05.230 --> 0:32:07.480 able to have that. There's these some of these texts 0:32:07.480 --> 0:32:09.730 from the ancient world that have been dug up by archaeologists. 0:32:09.730 --> 0:32:12.280 And there's one where there's this Babylonian worshiper who says 0:32:12.280 --> 0:32:15.130 something like, oh, that if we only knew what the 0:32:15.160 --> 0:32:19.210 gods wanted, like the gods. It seems like what's right 0:32:19.210 --> 0:32:21.400 to a person is wrong to a god. And we 0:32:21.400 --> 0:32:23.650 try to get things right and we never know. Israel 0:32:23.650 --> 0:32:27.340 did not have that problem. Yeah. The Lord graciously revealed 0:32:27.340 --> 0:32:30.610 himself to him. That's a wonderful thing.
