And Mark, the amazing thing is we 0:00:52.680 --> 0:00:54.120 have access to this power. 0:00:54.760 --> 0:00:58.400 We do, Wayne. And it's not nuclear power. 0:00:58.440 --> 0:00:59.360 No. It's greater. 0:00:59.360 --> 0:01:02.840 It is greater than that. Much greater. This is the 0:01:02.840 --> 0:01:05.959 power of the Holy Spirit. And we're going to be 0:01:05.959 --> 0:01:09.040 looking at a prayer that the Apostle Paul prayed for 0:01:09.040 --> 0:01:13.400 the Ephesian believers. It's one of my favorite prayers in Scripture. 0:01:13.400 --> 0:01:16.320 I pray it sometimes for my life. I pray it 0:01:16.319 --> 0:01:19.360 over people's lives as well. But he asks in this 0:01:19.360 --> 0:01:24.800 prayer that they may be strengthened with the power of 0:01:24.800 --> 0:01:27.000 the Holy Spirit in the inner being. 0:01:27.040 --> 0:01:29.240 Yeah, if you're in a place where you can't open 0:01:29.240 --> 0:01:31.119 your Bible, I hope you'll look at the words in 0:01:31.120 --> 0:01:34.280 Ephesians chapter three. Here is Mark comes with today's message 0:01:34.480 --> 0:01:36.480 the power at work in you. 0:01:38.080 --> 0:01:41.160 On August 6th, 1945. 0:01:41.720 --> 0:01:47.200 At precisely 8:15 a.m. in the morning, a uranium bomb 0:01:47.200 --> 0:01:55.240 exploded over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Within seconds, the 0:01:55.240 --> 0:02:02.210 entire city lay in ruins. 70,000 people were dead and 0:02:02.210 --> 0:02:09.850 another 70,000 people were seriously injured. That one bomb had 0:02:09.850 --> 0:02:15.730 exploded with a force that's greater than 20,000 tons of TNT. 0:02:16.850 --> 0:02:22.650 Now that is power. At the time that that bomb exploded, 0:02:23.770 --> 0:02:28.690 scientists thought they had discovered a force that could not 0:02:28.690 --> 0:02:34.410 be equaled. Yet, since that, we've actually discovered forces that 0:02:34.410 --> 0:02:38.450 are more powerful, that make that force seem like kids play. 0:02:38.650 --> 0:02:47.090 We've discovered nuclear energy. The nuclear bombs today have much 0:02:47.090 --> 0:02:51.889 greater power than even the atomic bomb had in those days. 0:02:52.690 --> 0:02:56.250 And when we think of power, TNT, of dynamite, we 0:02:56.250 --> 0:03:04.330 think of these devastating explosions. But yet that same power 0:03:05.610 --> 0:03:09.570 that can be used to explode a city or devastate 0:03:09.610 --> 0:03:13.090 a city is the same kind of power that can 0:03:13.090 --> 0:03:19.650 be used to produce electricity and make a city run 0:03:20.450 --> 0:03:29.570 and raise bridges and power up skyscrapers and provide the 0:03:29.570 --> 0:03:35.490 energy that gives the heating and schools. It's the same power. 0:03:35.890 --> 0:03:39.610 It's just one is a channeled power and another is 0:03:39.610 --> 0:03:44.730 an unchanneled power. Explosive power. Today, I want to talk 0:03:44.730 --> 0:03:49.970 to you about a power that's even greater than nuclear power. 0:03:50.210 --> 0:03:54.890 A power that is at work within us. It's the 0:03:54.890 --> 0:03:59.290 power of God. And the Apostle Paul is about to 0:03:59.330 --> 0:04:02.340 speak about the power of God in this area. And 0:04:02.340 --> 0:04:04.940 I want you to turn in your Bibles to Ephesians 0:04:04.940 --> 0:04:09.620 chapter three. I'm going to begin reading in verse 14 0:04:09.660 --> 0:04:14.060 of Ephesians chapter three, as the apostle Paul begins to 0:04:14.100 --> 0:04:17.540 pray and talk to them about what it means to 0:04:17.580 --> 0:04:22.820 have the power of God. So he says in verse 14, 0:04:23.180 --> 0:04:29.700 for this reason I kneel before the father, from whom 0:04:29.700 --> 0:04:33.700 the whole family in heaven and earth derives its name. 0:04:34.779 --> 0:04:38.420 And I pray that out of his glorious riches he 0:04:38.420 --> 0:04:42.260 may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your 0:04:42.260 --> 0:04:47.099 inner being. This is a prayer. Verses 14 through 21 0:04:47.100 --> 0:04:51.860 are a prayer, a prayer for power, a prayer that 0:04:51.860 --> 0:04:55.940 the power that's in us will be unleashed. So now 0:04:55.940 --> 0:05:00.860 notice Paul says, for this reason I kneel before the father. 0:05:02.700 --> 0:05:05.060 There's a lot of places in Scripture where people kneel. 0:05:05.420 --> 0:05:07.340 Some of you were raised in a tradition that every 0:05:07.339 --> 0:05:10.779 Sunday you knelt to pray some prayers. And there's actually 0:05:10.779 --> 0:05:13.340 a lot of places in Scripture where people knelt. The 0:05:13.339 --> 0:05:18.979 Apostle Paul knelt, Peter knelt, the prophet Daniel knelt, Ezra knelt. 0:05:19.500 --> 0:05:22.940 Solomon knelt in the dedication of the temple. When people 0:05:22.940 --> 0:05:26.380 came to Jesus, they knelt to have requests from him. 0:05:27.020 --> 0:05:29.020 If I were to ask you here, when's the last 0:05:29.020 --> 0:05:32.860 time you actually knelt in a conversation? Most of you 0:05:32.860 --> 0:05:35.820 probably haven't. It's been a long time since you knelt down, right? 0:05:37.500 --> 0:05:42.100 Maybe when you asked your fiance to marry you, you 0:05:42.100 --> 0:05:43.940 may have knelt. How many of you guys did that? 0:05:43.940 --> 0:05:47.620 You got on one knee with the ring? Okay. All right. 0:05:47.660 --> 0:05:50.020 A few of you did that. You. You know, you 0:05:50.060 --> 0:05:52.940 knelt down. It's almost. What are you saying with that? 0:05:52.940 --> 0:05:55.420 You're kind of begging. Please don't say no. I beg of you, say yes. 0:05:58.980 --> 0:06:01.950 You're kneeling down to say that it's it's kind of 0:06:01.990 --> 0:06:08.750 a sign of humility of, of of petitioning someone. But 0:06:09.029 --> 0:06:12.989 if we see someone kneeling, we feel like they're really 0:06:13.029 --> 0:06:18.030 humbling themselves. I heard of a guy that, uh, was 0:06:18.070 --> 0:06:21.430 went to work bragging about that he had just had 0:06:21.430 --> 0:06:24.030 a fight, and his wife ended up on her knees, 0:06:24.070 --> 0:06:27.110 and he was like, uh, his friend asked him, so 0:06:27.110 --> 0:06:29.270 she ended up underneath. Yeah, she was on her knees. 0:06:29.310 --> 0:06:31.710 You know, that's how the fight ended up. And he said, well, 0:06:31.710 --> 0:06:34.790 what was she saying? And he said, well, she was saying, 0:06:34.790 --> 0:06:37.150 come out from under the bed, you coward. Come out 0:06:37.150 --> 0:06:43.909 and finish this fight. So but usually when we're on 0:06:43.910 --> 0:06:48.750 our knees, we're requesting something. And so the Apostle Paul says, 0:06:49.029 --> 0:06:55.630 I kneel before the father. Now, there are times to kneel. 0:06:55.630 --> 0:06:57.790 And I think that we need to learn what it 0:06:57.790 --> 0:07:03.430 means to, uh, sometimes take different postures in prayer, um, 0:07:03.870 --> 0:07:09.350 folding our hands or kneeling or even being putting ourselves 0:07:10.350 --> 0:07:14.270 prostrate before God. There are signs of submission. There are 0:07:14.270 --> 0:07:18.230 signs of God. I'm really calling out to you. But 0:07:18.230 --> 0:07:22.950 you know, you don't have to kneel to be praying, right? Uh, 0:07:22.950 --> 0:07:25.590 in fact, I encourage you to learn to pray throughout 0:07:25.590 --> 0:07:30.150 your entire day. And so, please, when you're driving, don't 0:07:30.190 --> 0:07:33.150 try to put your hands together like this while you're driving. 0:07:33.670 --> 0:07:36.110 Please don't raise your hands. And even worse than that, 0:07:36.110 --> 0:07:38.390 please don't close your eyes when you're driving and say, well, 0:07:38.390 --> 0:07:42.030 I gotta close my eyes to pray. Uh, so you 0:07:42.470 --> 0:07:46.390 you there's no natural, there's no special position that you 0:07:46.390 --> 0:07:48.830 have to be in to prayer. But there's certain times 0:07:49.110 --> 0:07:51.590 where we really want to humble ourselves before God and 0:07:51.590 --> 0:07:55.510 we kneel or we throw ourselves on the floor before God. 0:07:55.550 --> 0:07:59.590 And it's a physical sign of God. I'm calling out 0:07:59.590 --> 0:08:05.080 to you in deep desperation and our posture becomes our prayer. Well, 0:08:05.080 --> 0:08:08.240 Paul is kneeling before God the Father. He says, I 0:08:08.280 --> 0:08:13.880 kneel before the father, from whom all of heaven, all 0:08:13.920 --> 0:08:18.400 of the whole family in heaven and earth derives its name. 0:08:19.520 --> 0:08:23.800 Paul is speaking about the fact that people that have 0:08:23.800 --> 0:08:27.480 gone before and died, and people that are currently living, 0:08:27.840 --> 0:08:30.800 we are all connected as a family, and we have 0:08:30.800 --> 0:08:34.080 one father, and he's the father of us all. Our 0:08:34.080 --> 0:08:38.760 spiritual father, and we're connected to them. By the way, 0:08:38.760 --> 0:08:43.240 I think this is a real important lesson. There are 0:08:43.240 --> 0:08:45.960 churches in Chicago that worship in a way that's very 0:08:45.960 --> 0:08:50.400 different from us. But if they are life giving churches 0:08:50.400 --> 0:08:52.720 and have the Spirit of God inside of them, they're 0:08:52.720 --> 0:08:57.280 part of our same family, their churches in Chicago that 0:08:57.280 --> 0:09:03.560 have for our services, Uh, you know. And, um, there 0:09:03.600 --> 0:09:09.640 are churches in Chicago that have 59.5 minute services, and 0:09:09.880 --> 0:09:13.920 the entire prayers are read. The messages are read. Uh, 0:09:13.920 --> 0:09:17.000 I preached at a church, uh, in fact, we I 0:09:17.040 --> 0:09:20.679 swapped pulpits with a pastor that actually preached here and 0:09:20.679 --> 0:09:23.280 did a great job. Uh, Dan Meyer at Christ Church 0:09:23.280 --> 0:09:25.800 of Oakbrook. I went and preached in Oakbrook, which is 0:09:25.800 --> 0:09:29.160 a very far cry from the southwest side of Chicago 0:09:30.320 --> 0:09:32.800 and but but but Christ Church of Oakbrook is more 0:09:32.800 --> 0:09:37.680 of a high church place. And so they um, at 0:09:37.960 --> 0:09:41.800 the second service, pastor Myers, he wears a robe when 0:09:41.800 --> 0:09:46.040 he preaches. And then when they read the word, they 0:09:46.360 --> 0:09:49.640 climb up to this podium and you have to read 0:09:49.640 --> 0:09:53.400 the word from the podium, and all the prayers are read, 0:09:53.400 --> 0:09:58.360 and their service is exactly an hour long. Well, that's 0:09:58.360 --> 0:10:01.010 a whole different culture than I'm used to. But here's 0:10:01.010 --> 0:10:04.130 what I know. They are part of the family of 0:10:04.130 --> 0:10:07.690 God because the gospel of Jesus Christ is preached there. 0:10:07.929 --> 0:10:10.330 There are people are coming to Christ, and so they 0:10:10.330 --> 0:10:12.890 are part of the same family of God that we 0:10:12.890 --> 0:10:16.770 are a part of. That's why I've taught you over 0:10:16.770 --> 0:10:21.970 and over that with life giving churches in Chicago. We 0:10:21.970 --> 0:10:28.490 are not in competition, but we are in cooperation. Now, 0:10:28.490 --> 0:10:31.970 not every church is a life giving church. Some churches 0:10:31.970 --> 0:10:35.370 lead people astray. Some people, some churches don't preach the truth. 0:10:35.410 --> 0:10:39.090 Some people, some churches deny Jesus. And so I don't 0:10:39.130 --> 0:10:42.130 link my arms with those churches and sing Kumbaya. I'm 0:10:42.130 --> 0:10:44.650 blessed and pray. I pray that they would get straightened 0:10:44.690 --> 0:10:47.170 out in what they're doing. But if their life giving 0:10:47.170 --> 0:10:50.090 church and they love the Lord and they follow the Bible, 0:10:50.090 --> 0:10:53.970 I bless them, I encourage them, and I see ourselves 0:10:53.970 --> 0:10:59.850 as part of the same family. Paul says, I kneel 0:10:59.970 --> 0:11:03.449 before God the Father, of whom his whole family in 0:11:03.450 --> 0:11:09.650 heaven and on earth derives its name. Verse 16 I pray. 0:11:09.650 --> 0:11:13.090 And here's the prayer that he he starts praying for 0:11:13.090 --> 0:11:17.610 these people. He says, I pray that out of his 0:11:17.610 --> 0:11:23.610 glorious riches he may. He may strengthen you with power 0:11:25.010 --> 0:11:30.010 through His Spirit in your inner being. So there's a 0:11:30.010 --> 0:11:33.170 couple of things about this prayer that we need to understand. 0:11:34.090 --> 0:11:36.930 Number one, we need to understand that he's he's praying 0:11:36.929 --> 0:11:43.570 that God would tap in to his glorious riches. Here's 0:11:43.570 --> 0:11:46.650 the thing I want you to understand about God. God 0:11:46.650 --> 0:11:55.450 is never, never in a recession. Heaven is not touched 0:11:56.090 --> 0:12:00.300 by a crashing stock market. There is no such thing 0:12:00.300 --> 0:12:04.860 as God being short on something. He is not affected 0:12:04.860 --> 0:12:10.900 by our earthly recessions. He is not limited when we 0:12:10.900 --> 0:12:18.580 are limited. He is unlimited in resources, unlimited in power, 0:12:18.940 --> 0:12:25.500 unlimited in his ability. He has glorious riches. And what 0:12:25.500 --> 0:12:29.100 Paul is saying is that God is tapping into his 0:12:29.100 --> 0:12:34.420 glorious riches. He's tapping into this incredible resource that he has, 0:12:34.700 --> 0:12:38.540 and he's taking some of this resource of his glorious riches. 0:12:38.700 --> 0:12:44.500 And he takes it and he shares it downward with us. The Lord's Prayer says, Our Father who art 0:14:26.310 --> 0:14:31.350 in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy 0:14:31.350 --> 0:14:33.590 will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 0:14:33.590 --> 0:14:38.830 Give us this day what? Our daily bread. What do 0:14:38.830 --> 0:14:40.750 you think that prayer is? Do you think he's praying 0:14:40.750 --> 0:14:44.870 for bagel and wheat bread? That's not what give us 0:14:44.870 --> 0:14:48.990 our day. Their daily bread is. It's. Give us today 0:14:48.990 --> 0:14:53.950 God the resources that we need today. Jesus taught us 0:14:53.950 --> 0:14:58.470 to pray for resources that we need for today. He 0:14:58.470 --> 0:15:01.480 taught us to pray that our needs would be met, 0:15:01.480 --> 0:15:05.440 that we would have the resources that we need to operate. 0:15:05.440 --> 0:15:08.320 And in other places in Scripture, he tells us to 0:15:08.360 --> 0:15:11.120 pray that we would have enough not only to supply 0:15:11.120 --> 0:15:13.720 our own needs, but enough to be able to give 0:15:13.720 --> 0:15:17.200 to others as well. So God is not. It's not 0:15:17.200 --> 0:15:22.240 God's will that you operate and live in scarcity. Now, 0:15:22.240 --> 0:15:25.480 there are times in life where you may struggle financially. 0:15:26.080 --> 0:15:29.480 The just and the unjust go through times like that. 0:15:30.640 --> 0:15:33.680 So I never want you to feel like if you 0:15:33.680 --> 0:15:36.840 are going through a rough financial time, that is because 0:15:36.840 --> 0:15:40.040 you're less spiritual or don't have faith, or because there's 0:15:40.040 --> 0:15:44.320 sin in your life. Because sometimes we go through those seasons, 0:15:44.480 --> 0:15:47.720 whether we're doing good or bad. But I do believe 0:15:47.720 --> 0:15:50.000 that the ultimate will of God in our life is 0:15:50.000 --> 0:15:52.760 not that you live a life in scarcity, but that 0:15:52.760 --> 0:15:54.960 you live a life in a place where you have 0:15:54.960 --> 0:15:57.000 not only enough to meet your own needs, but you 0:15:57.000 --> 0:16:01.080 have abundance to be able to give, and that we ultimately, 0:16:01.080 --> 0:16:06.360 as believers, not become simply recipients of other people, but 0:16:06.360 --> 0:16:10.280 that we become resource people, that we become the people 0:16:10.280 --> 0:16:13.920 that give. That we become the people that resource that 0:16:13.920 --> 0:16:17.200 we become, the people that share the people of God 0:16:17.240 --> 0:16:21.200 become those people. And so Paul says, out of God's 0:16:21.200 --> 0:16:28.920 glorious riches, he may strengthen you with power. Now there's 0:16:28.920 --> 0:16:35.360 two words that are used there strengthen and power. Both 0:16:35.360 --> 0:16:38.120 of these words in the Greek have to do with power, 0:16:38.120 --> 0:16:43.640 but they have a different meaning to them. The word 0:16:43.640 --> 0:16:52.880 strengthen means to become strong or to increase in force 0:16:53.480 --> 0:16:58.520 or capability. The word for power in the Greek is 0:16:58.520 --> 0:17:01.720 the word dunamis, where we get the word dynamite from. 0:17:02.000 --> 0:17:06.640 And that has to do with strength, force, capability. So 0:17:06.640 --> 0:17:11.600 what Paul is saying is, I pray that God, out 0:17:11.600 --> 0:17:17.560 of his glorious riches, may help you increase the power 0:17:17.800 --> 0:17:22.919 that's already present in your life. The power is there. 0:17:24.040 --> 0:17:27.000 You have power, or you have more power than what 0:17:27.000 --> 0:17:31.000 you know you have. There is a power in your life, 0:17:31.320 --> 0:17:37.600 a latent power in your life that makes nuclear power pale. 0:17:38.080 --> 0:17:42.240 It's the power of the Holy Spirit. Now notice what 0:17:42.240 --> 0:17:46.920 it says, that he may strengthen you with power. Through what? 0:17:47.600 --> 0:17:54.440 Through his spirit in your inner being. What God is 0:17:54.440 --> 0:17:56.600 trying to do is God is trying to take his 0:17:56.600 --> 0:18:00.609 power that is already inside of you view and increase 0:18:00.609 --> 0:18:04.369 that power. That power has come to your life via 0:18:04.410 --> 0:18:09.530 the Holy Spirit, capital S and the Holy Spirit is 0:18:09.530 --> 0:18:14.850 strengthening what some versions call the inner man or the 0:18:14.850 --> 0:18:21.050 spirit man. Every person here has two man, so to speak. 0:18:21.050 --> 0:18:24.130 If you're a woman, I guess two women, you have 0:18:24.130 --> 0:18:27.690 the inner man and the outer man. The outer man 0:18:27.690 --> 0:18:30.810 is your physical body. The inner man is your spiritual body. 0:18:31.130 --> 0:18:33.810 Do you realize that you can be in shape in 0:18:33.810 --> 0:18:36.010 your outer man, and way out of shape in your 0:18:36.010 --> 0:18:42.650 inner man? You can be a £400 cut in shape 0:18:42.690 --> 0:18:48.369 big linebacker in your outer man and in your inner man. 0:18:48.410 --> 0:18:53.250 You can be this little weakling of a person in 0:18:53.250 --> 0:18:55.930 your inner man. Although your outer man may look like 0:18:55.930 --> 0:18:58.770 it's strong. And on the other hand, you may be 0:18:58.770 --> 0:19:04.180 a 90 year old, frail little lady that you think 0:19:04.180 --> 0:19:05.900 if you just sneeze at her, you're going to break 0:19:05.900 --> 0:19:09.100 one of her bones? And she's, you know, in the 0:19:09.100 --> 0:19:12.580 church with her little cane, just walking really carefully.
