Most people that hear this maybe think, hey, 0:00:59.400 --> 0:01:04.960 I've never committed armed robbery or deliberately gone out and 0:01:04.959 --> 0:01:09.240 hijacked a car. Those are the extreme examples, right? But 0:01:09.280 --> 0:01:14.440 a heart of compromise that takes that which doesn't belong 0:01:14.480 --> 0:01:18.640 to us, even in the small things, I think opens 0:01:18.640 --> 0:01:25.240 up a door of repercussions just as severe as carjacking 0:01:25.240 --> 0:01:28.480 may be in the spiritual realm. Yeah. How about it? How many of you have 0:02:05.130 --> 0:02:08.810 ever been robbed before someone robbed something? Uh, I was 0:02:08.810 --> 0:02:11.530 thinking a little bit, uh, a couple of years ago 0:02:11.530 --> 0:02:14.850 when we started our Humboldt Park campus. I was having 0:02:14.850 --> 0:02:17.570 a staff meeting at the church, getting ready to launch 0:02:17.610 --> 0:02:20.250 a service there, and so I was running late. I 0:02:20.290 --> 0:02:23.650 parked my car and ran into the to the meeting 0:02:23.650 --> 0:02:26.650 that we're having, but I forgot to take my GPS. 0:02:26.889 --> 0:02:30.170 I forgot to hide my GPS. And so an hour 0:02:30.169 --> 0:02:32.889 and a half later, when I came out, my the 0:02:32.889 --> 0:02:37.810 driver's side window was broken. They'd stolen my GPS, and I, 0:02:37.850 --> 0:02:41.450 I saw the car and I thought, where's the punk 0:02:41.490 --> 0:02:46.330 that did this? Well, I was mad, I was mad. Why? 0:02:46.370 --> 0:02:48.290 Because I had to find a I had to clean 0:02:48.290 --> 0:02:50.730 up the glass. I had to find a place to 0:02:50.730 --> 0:02:55.329 replace the window. They took my GPS and there's something like, hey, 0:02:55.330 --> 0:02:57.690 don't you know this belongs to me? You're not allowed 0:02:57.690 --> 0:03:02.970 to take this. A few years ago, I remember another 0:03:02.970 --> 0:03:07.530 incident where I was walking down a street in Madrid 0:03:08.210 --> 0:03:11.170 with my wife and, and I was walking down the street. 0:03:11.169 --> 0:03:13.970 I looked, I looked over at her, I noticed this 0:03:13.970 --> 0:03:19.450 hand in her purse and I turned around and there 0:03:19.450 --> 0:03:22.850 I caught him red handed, a 16 year old boy 0:03:22.889 --> 0:03:26.410 trying to rob my wife's purse. And so he took 0:03:26.410 --> 0:03:29.450 off running. I took off running after him. I mean, 0:03:29.450 --> 0:03:32.410 we were both going as fast as we could. But 0:03:32.410 --> 0:03:34.250 you say, pastor, what would you have done if you 0:03:34.290 --> 0:03:37.450 caught him? I don't know, I'd pray for wisdom from God. Um. 0:03:38.930 --> 0:03:41.330 He ran into a subway, chased him as far as 0:03:41.330 --> 0:03:44.330 I could, but he got away. But I remember feeling indignant. You can't take it from us. 0:03:52.170 --> 0:03:55.730 Anybody that's been robbed has felt that way. Why? Now, 0:04:25.420 --> 0:04:29.740 you may not realize this, but I am convinced that 0:04:30.180 --> 0:04:34.220 the eighth commandment, the breaking of the eighth commandment, has 0:04:34.220 --> 0:04:39.820 been so diluted that I believe that a great majority 0:04:39.820 --> 0:04:43.860 of our society practices the breaking of the eighth commandment 0:04:43.860 --> 0:04:48.219 in one way or another. It's kind of like the 0:04:48.820 --> 0:04:53.940 the husband that told his wife, hey, do you realize 0:04:53.940 --> 0:04:56.179 that the cleaning lady that came in to clean our house, 0:04:56.180 --> 0:05:00.860 I caught her red handed stealing our towels, and she said, 0:05:00.860 --> 0:05:02.900 what towels were they? He said, well, the ones with 0:05:02.900 --> 0:05:08.460 the Holiday Inn logo on them. I believe there's this 0:05:08.500 --> 0:05:13.540 sort of, this pervasive culture where we look at certain 0:05:13.540 --> 0:05:17.339 types of stealing and robbery as, okay, as long as 0:05:17.339 --> 0:05:22.860 it doesn't seem to be aggressive. We view it as okay. 0:05:23.940 --> 0:05:25.660 And I want to talk about that for a second, 0:05:25.660 --> 0:05:32.780 because I believe that, uh, we are sowing seeds that 0:05:32.779 --> 0:05:35.099 open up doors to the kingdom of darkness instead of 0:05:35.100 --> 0:05:37.900 the kingdom of light when we violate the eighth commandment. 0:05:38.339 --> 0:05:44.780 Jesus said in John chapter ten, verse ten, the thief comes. 0:05:45.380 --> 0:05:49.779 Speaking of Satan, the enemy. The thief comes to steal, kill, 0:05:49.779 --> 0:05:55.180 and destroy. Jesus said, I have come to give and 0:05:55.180 --> 0:06:00.300 to give life more abundantly. The kingdom of Darkness culture 0:06:00.589 --> 0:06:06.869 is characterized by taking the Kingdom of light. Culture is 0:06:06.870 --> 0:06:12.909 characterized by giving anything that becomes a taker is buying 0:06:12.950 --> 0:06:16.589 in to the values of the kingdom of darkness. Anything 0:06:16.589 --> 0:06:20.030 that is a giver is buying into the values of 0:06:20.029 --> 0:06:24.750 the kingdom of light. Jesus came to give. The enemy 0:06:24.750 --> 0:06:29.230 came to take. When we violate the eighth commandment, we 0:06:29.230 --> 0:06:32.830 are opening up our lives for the enemy to come 0:06:32.830 --> 0:06:37.110 in and begin to create a kingdom of darkness culture 0:06:37.110 --> 0:06:40.270 within our lives. I want to talk to you about 0:06:40.270 --> 0:06:44.150 some of the camouflage ways that the enemy actually has 0:06:44.190 --> 0:06:47.990 seeped into our American culture and made the breaking of 0:06:47.990 --> 0:06:52.990 the eighth commandment something that is culturally accepted, for example. 0:06:53.350 --> 0:06:55.349 I want to just give you a few ways that 0:06:55.350 --> 0:07:00.830 the eighth commandment is violated. Number one, property theft. That 0:07:00.830 --> 0:07:04.789 is to take something from someone else, a property that's 0:07:04.790 --> 0:07:11.470 not yours. For example, tools taken from the job. You 0:07:11.470 --> 0:07:16.310 work at a construction site. You figure the boss has 0:07:16.310 --> 0:07:21.470 a lot of hammers, a lot of saws, a lot 0:07:21.470 --> 0:07:25.830 of tape measures, and you don't have as many as 0:07:25.830 --> 0:07:28.430 he has, so he's not going to miss it. So 0:07:28.430 --> 0:07:30.710 you just take a few tools that you need to 0:07:30.750 --> 0:07:33.470 use in your project. In the back of your mind, 0:07:33.470 --> 0:07:37.070 you justify it by I will return it one day, 0:07:37.870 --> 0:07:41.670 and then suddenly you're building up a whole chest tool 0:07:41.670 --> 0:07:45.030 full of tools that all came from the job, and 0:07:45.030 --> 0:07:47.750 we excuse it as though, well, it's no one's going 0:07:47.790 --> 0:07:50.750 to miss it. It's no big deal, but actually is 0:07:50.750 --> 0:08:00.680 a widespread practice. And taking 60% of the inventory, 66 0:08:01.280 --> 0:08:05.120 of the inventory lost last year in America is attributed 0:08:05.400 --> 0:08:10.760 to employee theft. That amounts to not millions of dollars, 0:08:10.760 --> 0:08:17.280 but actually billions of dollars. In the United States, department 0:08:17.280 --> 0:08:23.960 store pilferage exceeds $4 billion a year. One estimate said 0:08:23.960 --> 0:08:27.280 that one out of every 52 customers a day carries 0:08:27.280 --> 0:08:31.960 away at least one unpaid item. My 19 year old daughter, 0:08:31.960 --> 0:08:35.320 while she's working her way through college, she actually is 0:08:35.320 --> 0:08:38.400 working at a at a at a clothing store. And 0:08:38.400 --> 0:08:40.719 there's been several days when she's come back to me 0:08:41.000 --> 0:08:43.920 and she'll say, dad, you can't believe how blatant people 0:08:43.920 --> 0:08:48.040 are about going and robbing clothes. I mean, it's just crazy. 0:08:48.080 --> 0:08:51.600 Not only teenagers, but their parents as well. If they 0:08:51.600 --> 0:08:54.280 can get away with it, they feel like, hey, it's okay. 0:08:55.559 --> 0:08:58.800 And you say, well, they must be in extreme poverty. Uh, 0:08:58.800 --> 0:09:04.400 it's not Limited to people in poverty. Lindsay Lohan is 0:09:04.400 --> 0:09:08.760 doing it and she's not in poverty. It's the idea 0:09:08.760 --> 0:09:12.040 that if I can get away with taking something without 0:09:12.040 --> 0:09:16.000 being caught, then it's actually okay. One economist has said 0:09:16.000 --> 0:09:19.440 that if thefts stopped in America, we could balance the 0:09:19.480 --> 0:09:23.040 budget between 3 to 5 and between 3 to 5 years. 0:09:24.440 --> 0:09:27.920 Property theft. The second camouflage way that we break the 0:09:27.960 --> 0:09:32.960 eighth commandment is employee theft. Employees admitted to an average 0:09:32.960 --> 0:09:37.040 of 20% of their time at work goofing off. That 0:09:37.040 --> 0:09:42.480 accounts for a four day a week, work day. Work week. 20% 0:09:42.480 --> 0:09:48.200 of your time talking social media. You're supposed to be 0:09:48.240 --> 0:09:52.199 inputting data onto your computer, and you're just checking Facebook 0:09:52.200 --> 0:09:56.559 statuses and emailing people and doing a little YouTube, entertaining 0:09:56.559 --> 0:09:58.960 yourself a little bit. And you say, well, pastor, everybody 0:09:58.960 --> 0:10:00.890 does it. It's no big deal. But here's the way 0:10:00.890 --> 0:10:03.850 it works. Listen, if you're being paid $15 an hour 0:10:04.050 --> 0:10:07.890 and you wasted an hour, you just stole $15 from 0:10:07.890 --> 0:10:12.809 your employer. You may not see it that way, but 0:10:12.809 --> 0:10:19.050 it's a violation of the eighth commandment. Thou shalt not steal. 0:10:21.250 --> 0:10:25.090 Coming late to work, leaving early and punching a card 0:10:25.090 --> 0:10:28.170 that makes it sound like you've been there. Violation of 0:10:28.170 --> 0:10:32.530 the eighth commandment. 50% of all working Americans admit to 0:10:32.570 --> 0:10:37.810 calling in sick when they were not. Um, violation of the eighth commandment, you say? Well, pastor, 0:10:58.170 --> 0:11:00.330 everybody does it. It's no big deal. But what I'm 0:11:00.330 --> 0:11:02.210 trying to tell you that it may not be a 0:11:02.210 --> 0:11:06.850 big deal in our culture, but according to God, you 0:11:06.850 --> 0:11:12.170 are violating a a commandment that opens up doors in 0:11:12.170 --> 0:11:15.170 your life for the seed of the kingdom of darkness 0:11:15.170 --> 0:11:20.170 to begin to infiltrate in your life. Deep theft. In 0:11:20.170 --> 0:11:23.410 other words, getting into debt without the intention of paying it. 0:11:23.450 --> 0:11:26.929 Psalms 3721 says, the wicked borrow and do not repay. 0:11:27.170 --> 0:11:33.090 Child support, theft, having alimony and child support that you 0:11:33.130 --> 0:11:37.809 try to slither out of by either not reporting the 0:11:37.850 --> 0:11:41.130 job that you're at, or being paid under the table 0:11:41.130 --> 0:11:45.050 in cash so that you can escape alimony payments. Let 0:11:45.050 --> 0:11:47.290 me tell you, I believe that that's one of the 0:11:47.290 --> 0:11:51.650 worst kind of thefts that can occur when you have 0:11:51.650 --> 0:11:54.689 a child and you try to work your way out 0:11:54.690 --> 0:12:00.180 of the responsibility of paying alimony for that child. In fact, 0:12:00.179 --> 0:12:04.580 can I tell you this? Unfortunately, I've had a few 0:12:04.580 --> 0:12:11.620 conversations of phone calls of of someone that will tell me, hey, 0:12:11.620 --> 0:12:15.140 pastor Mark, you don't know me. We've never met, but 0:12:15.140 --> 0:12:19.300 my ex-husband goes to your church, and I'm a little 0:12:19.300 --> 0:12:24.300 desperate here because they work. But yet there's been five 0:12:24.340 --> 0:12:28.179 years that I haven't seen a single payment given to me. 0:12:28.220 --> 0:12:30.939 Could you please do something about that? Listen, I don't 0:12:30.940 --> 0:12:34.900 want to get those calls. I want to get a 0:12:34.900 --> 0:12:37.900 call that says this. Pastor Mark, you don't know me, 0:12:38.900 --> 0:12:41.460 but my ex-husband goes to your church. No, no, no, I'm not talking about 0:14:09.590 --> 0:14:16.350 pirate like Redbeard. I'm talking about copying, uh, movies, CDs, 0:14:16.510 --> 0:14:20.070 music that you haven't paid for, that you somehow get 0:14:20.070 --> 0:14:23.870 downloaded and you get it for yourself. And you say, pastor, 0:14:23.870 --> 0:14:26.990 it's not hurting anybody. But the bottom line, I'm telling you, 0:14:26.990 --> 0:14:33.230 is that it's still legally considered theft. Well, it was 0:14:33.230 --> 0:14:40.590 praise music pastor. Worse yet, even. The point that I'm 0:14:40.590 --> 0:14:43.830 making is that oftentimes we're violating the Ten Commandments. And 0:14:43.830 --> 0:14:46.390 you say, well, pastor, don't get legalistic about it. Everybody 0:14:46.390 --> 0:14:49.190 does it. And it's sort of expected in our culture. 0:14:49.230 --> 0:14:52.070 I mean, I walk through the grocery store and okay, 0:14:52.350 --> 0:14:55.630 so I give my son an apple and he eats it. And, 0:14:55.670 --> 0:14:57.750 and I have a little bunch of grapes while we're 0:14:57.750 --> 0:15:00.000 walking there. You pretty much fool by the time you 0:15:00.000 --> 0:15:02.680 get to the counter and you haven't paid for that 0:15:02.680 --> 0:15:06.800 food yet either. And although it may seem small to 0:15:06.840 --> 0:15:10.040 the rest of our society, here's the point. The point 0:15:10.040 --> 0:15:14.840 is thou shalt not steal means thou shalt not steal. 0:15:15.040 --> 0:15:18.920 We open up the small door of taking, and we 0:15:18.920 --> 0:15:22.520 open up a culture of taking in our lives that 0:15:22.520 --> 0:15:26.120 can invade our spirit, damage our soul, and begin to 0:15:26.160 --> 0:15:34.640 remove the favor of God upon us. That's why. I 0:15:34.640 --> 0:15:36.560 want to I want you to see a couple verses here, 0:15:36.560 --> 0:15:39.880 because I believe that violating the eighth commandment, stealing or 0:15:39.880 --> 0:15:43.680 robbery or thievery, stops the flow of God's blessing and 0:15:43.680 --> 0:15:45.640 the favor on our life. And let me give you 0:15:45.640 --> 0:15:48.120 a few verses to that effect so that you can 0:15:48.120 --> 0:15:52.720 see it. In Zechariah chapter five, verse three, the prophet 0:15:52.720 --> 0:15:55.640 is speaking to the people of Israel, and he's talking 0:15:55.640 --> 0:15:58.800 about commandment thou shalt not lie on one side of 0:15:58.800 --> 0:16:01.000 the tablets, and thou shalt not steal. On the other 0:16:01.000 --> 0:16:04.440 side of the tablets and he says, this curse is 0:16:04.440 --> 0:16:07.640 going out over the whole land. The curse of what? 0:16:07.640 --> 0:16:10.200 What is a curse? A curse is the opposite of 0:16:10.200 --> 0:16:14.240 a blessing. Blessing is the favor of God. Curse is 0:16:14.240 --> 0:16:18.680 the withdrawal of the favor of God. Blessing makes life 0:16:18.680 --> 0:16:23.840 go easier. Curse makes life go more difficult. Blessing is 0:16:23.840 --> 0:16:28.320 like the oil that causes the engine to run smoother. 0:16:28.440 --> 0:16:30.960 Curse is like the withdrawal of the oil that makes 0:16:30.960 --> 0:16:35.320 it difficult, more more difficult to to move forward. And 0:16:36.200 --> 0:16:39.840 the prophet is telling Israel, there's a curse that's going 0:16:39.840 --> 0:16:42.880 over the whole land. And they ask why? He says, 0:16:42.880 --> 0:16:45.520 for according to what it says on one side, one 0:16:45.520 --> 0:16:49.360 side of the tablet, every thief will be banished. The 0:16:49.360 --> 0:16:52.520 prophet is saying, there's a curse coming upon the land, 0:16:52.520 --> 0:16:57.280 because there's widespread thievery happening among the people that are 0:16:57.280 --> 0:17:04.119 supposed to belong to God. In Deuteronomy chapter 27, verse 17, 0:17:04.320 --> 0:17:08.639 it says, cursed is the man who moves his neighbor's 0:17:08.640 --> 0:17:16.440 boundary stone. Now, in an agrarian society, your land is 0:17:16.440 --> 0:17:21.040 your most important source of income. You plow you till 0:17:21.040 --> 0:17:24.400 you plant and your income comes from that. So if 0:17:24.400 --> 0:17:27.080 you lose land and what some of the ancients would 0:17:27.080 --> 0:17:29.520 do is they would move the boundary, they would move 0:17:29.560 --> 0:17:32.800 at night, they would move the rocks that marked the 0:17:32.840 --> 0:17:34.760 boundary of their land. And if they could move it 0:17:34.760 --> 0:17:37.240 over 3 or 4ft, they would gain a whole stretch 0:17:37.240 --> 0:17:40.480 of land and increase their income. But it was robbing 0:17:40.480 --> 0:17:46.240 their neighbor. And God says, cursed is the man that 0:17:46.240 --> 0:17:49.240 moves the stone. In other words, when you rob your neighbor, 0:17:49.560 --> 0:17:54.320 there's a curse that comes upon your life the withdrawal 0:17:54.320 --> 0:17:58.560 of the favor of God. First Corinthians chapter six, verse 0:17:58.560 --> 0:18:01.650 ten says, do you know the wicked will not inherit 0:18:01.650 --> 0:18:05.090 the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. And then 0:18:05.090 --> 0:18:08.250 he lists a whole bunch of things that will not 0:18:08.250 --> 0:18:11.169 inherit the kingdom of God. Those, of course, are 0:22:46.750 --> 0:22:51.270 not biblical definitions of what defines Christianity or being a 0:22:51.270 --> 0:22:54.590 follower of Jesus. They have to understand their sinfulness. They 0:22:54.590 --> 0:22:57.990 have to believe that Jesus died on the cross in, in, 0:22:57.990 --> 0:23:00.790 in punishment for that sinfulness, and they have to say 0:23:00.790 --> 0:23:02.750 it with their mouth that they believe and receive him 0:23:02.750 --> 0:23:07.190 as their Savior. And so this girl is reading this book, 0:23:07.350 --> 0:23:10.110 and she turns to her mom, and she's like, mom, 0:23:10.750 --> 0:23:12.910 I read this in the book today. I don't think 0:23:12.910 --> 0:23:14.629 I'm a Christian. And they pull to the side of 0:23:14.630 --> 0:23:17.390 the road. Mom and daughter have a conversation right there. 0:23:17.590 --> 0:23:21.669 Mom gets to participate in this sweet girl coming to 0:23:21.670 --> 0:23:24.390 the throne of Jesus for the first time in authenticity, 0:23:24.430 --> 0:23:27.109 surrendering her heart to Christ. And they're able to drive 0:23:27.109 --> 0:23:30.030 home and tell dad, guess what? She really is a 0:23:30.030 --> 0:23:33.270 Christian now. I hear stories like that every day.
