And so today we're 0:00:50.080 --> 0:00:52.400 going to be looking at the responses of several people 0:00:52.400 --> 0:00:55.360 in Scripture who encountered Jesus and talk about how we 0:00:55.360 --> 0:00:58.440 should react not only to God's voice, but also when 0:00:58.440 --> 0:01:00.680 the pressure is on, especially when the pressure is on. 0:01:00.720 --> 0:01:03.960 Yeah. And Wayne, that's the reality is that we don't 0:01:03.960 --> 0:01:07.960 all respond to God the same way. It's different things 0:01:07.959 --> 0:01:12.320 that get our attention. In this account. We're going to 0:01:12.319 --> 0:01:16.880 see a businesswoman. We're going to see a demon possessed 0:01:16.920 --> 0:01:20.840 young lady, and we're going to see a jailer. They 0:01:20.840 --> 0:01:24.280 encounter God, but each of them encounter God a different way. 0:01:24.760 --> 0:01:27.600 And that's the beauty of it. Think of your own story. 0:01:27.640 --> 0:01:30.800 God reached you in a unique way that's probably different 0:01:30.800 --> 0:01:34.319 than your husband or your kids or your neighbor. We're 0:01:43.240 --> 0:01:46.559 in chapter 16. Make some noise. I love that title. 0:01:46.600 --> 0:01:47.600 Here's Mark job. 0:01:49.280 --> 0:01:52.080 In acts chapter 16. This is a story of how 0:01:52.080 --> 0:01:55.560 it all got started. This is a story of people's 0:01:55.560 --> 0:01:59.840 lives being changed. I'm going to introduce you to three 0:01:59.840 --> 0:02:07.970 people today. A business woman. High end business woman. A 0:02:08.010 --> 0:02:13.450 slave girl that was demon possessed. And a jailer that 0:02:13.450 --> 0:02:17.889 had a powerful encounter with Jesus. You know, the church 0:02:17.889 --> 0:02:20.130 is very diverse. How about it? If the church is 0:02:20.130 --> 0:02:22.850 doing its job, it should have people from all kinds 0:02:22.850 --> 0:02:26.250 of backgrounds. Look around you for a minute. Just take 0:02:26.250 --> 0:02:29.650 a moment. I know it's rude to stare behind you, 0:02:29.650 --> 0:02:32.410 but just take a moment to look around this auditorium. 0:02:32.410 --> 0:02:36.250 Could you do that? Go ahead. Do it. There's some 0:02:36.250 --> 0:02:40.210 pretty handsome people in this auditorium, right? Good looking people. 0:02:40.410 --> 0:02:46.450 But there is a huge diversity in this place. Some 0:02:46.450 --> 0:02:49.130 of you grew up Christians. Some of you never came 0:02:49.130 --> 0:02:52.489 to a church until recently. Some of you grew up 0:02:52.490 --> 0:02:54.690 in that side of the tracks. Others grew up in 0:02:54.690 --> 0:02:57.050 the other side of the tracks. Some of you came 0:02:57.050 --> 0:02:59.810 to God because your grandmother prayed for you. Some of 0:02:59.810 --> 0:03:02.649 you came to God because you had a radical encounter 0:03:02.650 --> 0:03:06.570 with the power of Jesus recently that turns you around, 0:03:07.970 --> 0:03:12.050 God has a way of bringing many people from different 0:03:12.050 --> 0:03:16.810 backgrounds to form his body that we call the church. 0:03:17.770 --> 0:03:24.170 The title of my message is make some Noise, make 0:03:24.610 --> 0:03:32.410 some Noise. Recently we had a radio broadcast in our chapel, 0:03:32.410 --> 0:03:37.050 a live radio broadcast in our chapel, and the producers 0:03:37.050 --> 0:03:41.530 of the radio show, when they went on the air, 0:03:42.010 --> 0:03:45.170 they were on the sidelines telling the audience to clap. 0:03:45.170 --> 0:03:48.890 They were based. They basically said in between, make some noise, clap. 0:03:49.490 --> 0:03:52.850 And so before the show went on, we all clapped 0:03:52.850 --> 0:03:55.650 and made some noise because they coached us. They wanted 0:03:55.930 --> 0:04:00.130 people that were listening via the airwaves to know that 0:04:00.130 --> 0:04:02.420 there was an audience in the place, and the only 0:04:02.420 --> 0:04:04.900 way they could know is if we made some noise. 0:04:06.020 --> 0:04:09.700 I was at the United Center a while back watching 0:04:09.700 --> 0:04:12.580 a Bulls game, and I was in the nosebleed section 0:04:12.580 --> 0:04:16.420 of the bleachers. And as I was trying to see 0:04:16.420 --> 0:04:20.380 the ants playing on the court down there, a guy 0:04:20.380 --> 0:04:23.940 came up and I can only describe him as a cheerleader. 0:04:24.900 --> 0:04:27.659 He came into our section and he was hired by 0:04:27.660 --> 0:04:32.219 the United by the Bulls organization to stir up the crowd. 0:04:32.700 --> 0:04:36.020 And so he had a sign that said clap. And 0:04:36.020 --> 0:04:38.820 he was stirring people up, and he was going like this. 0:04:38.820 --> 0:04:43.060 And he kept saying, make some noise, make some noise. 0:04:43.060 --> 0:04:46.140 And he stirred up the crowd. And so all of 0:04:46.180 --> 0:04:50.779 that section started to cheer and shout and make some noise. 0:04:50.779 --> 0:04:54.940 Why were we making noise? Because we wanted the players 0:04:54.940 --> 0:04:59.260 to know that we were in the house. When we're 0:04:59.260 --> 0:05:02.460 in the House, we encourage those that are playing the game. 0:05:03.100 --> 0:05:08.419 You make some noise. And there's times that we have 0:05:08.420 --> 0:05:13.500 to get loud, make some noise because we believe in something, 0:05:13.940 --> 0:05:18.500 because there's something that's so close to us that we're 0:05:18.500 --> 0:05:21.740 so excited about, that we can't contain ourselves and we 0:05:21.740 --> 0:05:26.060 want to make sure we make some noise. I believe 0:05:26.060 --> 0:05:28.620 that any time we're in the house of God, it's 0:05:28.620 --> 0:05:31.100 worth making some noise to the praise of God. There are some people in the house 0:05:59.820 --> 0:06:03.229 that are excited about the King of Kings and Lord 0:06:03.230 --> 0:06:07.830 of lords, whose name is Jesus Christ, the Savior of humanity. And sometimes what comes out 0:06:29.190 --> 0:06:34.229 of us is aren't always the best. You're in a 0:06:34.230 --> 0:06:38.270 traffic jam on I-55. Someone's cutting, cutting in front of you. 0:06:38.270 --> 0:06:41.910 People are honking their horns, and you're feeling the stress 0:06:41.910 --> 0:06:44.670 and the pressure of having to be somewhere on time. 0:06:44.750 --> 0:06:47.229 And let me tell you that the pressure's on when 0:06:47.230 --> 0:06:50.989 you start being squeezed. Sometimes the noise comes out. And 0:06:50.990 --> 0:06:53.550 for some of us that aren't sanctified, sometimes it's not 0:06:53.550 --> 0:07:00.349 a sanctified sound. We have a little dog in my house. 0:07:00.430 --> 0:07:03.230 Her name is Angel. My wife bought her a toy. 0:07:03.550 --> 0:07:06.230 And it's something interesting with this toy that every time 0:07:06.230 --> 0:07:08.870 you put pressure on this toy, you squeeze the toy. 0:07:08.990 --> 0:07:12.150 It makes a squeaky sound. I know that every time 0:07:12.150 --> 0:07:14.869 you put pressure on it, a squeak comes out of it. 0:07:15.310 --> 0:07:20.110 And I'm just wondering today that if you're under pressure, 0:07:20.710 --> 0:07:24.270 if you're feeling the weight of finances, the weight of 0:07:24.310 --> 0:07:29.270 family issues, the weight of a marriage struggle, the weight 0:07:29.270 --> 0:07:34.110 of a bad doctor's report, the weight of frustration at 0:07:34.110 --> 0:07:38.030 work with some coworker. I'm wondering what kind of sound 0:07:38.070 --> 0:07:40.630 is coming out of you. I'm wondering what kind of 0:07:40.630 --> 0:07:45.070 noise you're making under pressure. I'm just wondering out loud. 0:07:45.070 --> 0:07:47.790 Think about it for a second. What's coming out of 0:07:47.790 --> 0:07:53.590 you while you're under pressure? Is it complaining and criticism 0:07:53.590 --> 0:08:01.480 and negativity and discouragement and gossip? Or is it Lord, 0:08:01.480 --> 0:08:04.960 I'm under pressure. So under pressure, I'm going to look 0:08:04.960 --> 0:08:08.680 to the heavens and raise my voice. And bless your name. 0:08:08.680 --> 0:08:13.560 I'm wondering what's coming out of you under pressure. Because 0:08:13.560 --> 0:08:17.560 the verse that stood out of all of acts, chapter 0:08:17.560 --> 0:08:23.200 16 to me was verse 25. The apostle Paul and 0:08:23.200 --> 0:08:29.200 his sidekick Silas have just been beaten with rods, attacked 0:08:29.200 --> 0:08:37.320 by a mob, clothes stripped off their bloody, they're bruised, 0:08:37.559 --> 0:08:41.600 they're bleeding, and they're put in shackles, and they're taken 0:08:41.600 --> 0:08:44.439 and thrown into the darkest part of the prison in 0:08:44.480 --> 0:08:49.559 maximum security. And look at what it says. About midnight, 0:08:50.120 --> 0:08:55.559 Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, 0:08:56.320 --> 0:09:01.360 and the other prisoners were listening. Oh, I love that. 0:09:02.720 --> 0:09:07.800 What happened when they were squeezed? Hymns and praise were 0:09:07.800 --> 0:09:11.520 squeezed out of them. They made some noise in the 0:09:11.520 --> 0:09:15.400 middle of their pressure, and when they made noise that 0:09:15.400 --> 0:09:18.480 glorified God because they were in such a difficult situation, 0:09:18.480 --> 0:09:21.319 all the prisoners around them started listening to the noise 0:09:21.320 --> 0:09:24.840 that they were making, because it was unusual that in 0:09:24.880 --> 0:09:29.360 those kind of circumstances, they would be praising God. So 0:09:29.360 --> 0:09:31.760 I started looking at this passage and thinking about what 0:09:31.840 --> 0:09:34.800 God was doing to form this church called the Church 0:09:34.800 --> 0:09:38.959 of Philippi. There's three people that you see, and they 0:09:38.960 --> 0:09:43.280 respond to different noises, different sounds. The first one that 0:09:43.280 --> 0:09:47.400 we see in acts chapter 16, verses 13 through 15, 0:09:47.600 --> 0:09:52.080 is we see a businesswoman, a high end businesswoman. She 0:09:52.080 --> 0:09:55.400 would be a businesswoman today that would be selling designer 0:09:55.400 --> 0:10:00.850 clothes on Michigan Avenue, an entrepreneur, a leader, a smart 0:10:00.850 --> 0:10:05.329 lady that believed in God but had not known God. 0:10:06.010 --> 0:10:09.050 The Bible tells us about. Her name was Lydia and 0:10:09.050 --> 0:10:13.250 she sold purple. She was a dealer of purple clothing 0:10:13.250 --> 0:10:16.970 which was high in clothing in that time. And Scripture 0:10:16.970 --> 0:10:20.650 tells us that she had a knowledge of God. She 0:10:20.650 --> 0:10:23.730 was a worshiper of God, but she had never come 0:10:23.730 --> 0:10:27.370 to know God. How many of you know, if you 0:10:27.370 --> 0:10:32.330 look at verse 14, one of the woman listening was 0:10:32.330 --> 0:10:35.730 from a city called Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in 0:10:35.730 --> 0:10:39.929 purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord 0:10:39.929 --> 0:10:45.330 opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. This was 0:10:45.330 --> 0:10:51.130 a woman, a smart, intelligent businesswoman that feared God and 0:10:51.130 --> 0:10:54.410 prayed to God but had never met God. She had 0:10:54.410 --> 0:10:58.810 never had an encounter with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. 0:10:58.809 --> 0:11:05.250 She needed to hear the sound of clear teaching to clarify, 0:11:05.450 --> 0:11:08.730 to bring her to God. How many of you. How 0:11:08.730 --> 0:11:12.329 many of you in this place believed in God before 0:11:12.330 --> 0:11:15.250 you came to know God? You knew about God. You 0:11:15.250 --> 0:11:19.010 were raised in religion, but you really had never met God. 0:11:19.010 --> 0:11:21.970 How many of you? Yeah, there's a lot of you. 0:11:23.929 --> 0:11:28.130 This woman had to hear the sound, the noise of 0:11:28.130 --> 0:11:32.050 sound teaching to bring her to God. She had to 0:11:32.050 --> 0:11:37.210 see someone sat down and clearly explained Scripture in a smart, 0:11:37.210 --> 0:11:42.130 intellectual manner that she could comprehend because she was a businesswoman. 0:11:42.130 --> 0:11:45.210 So she needed her intellect to be spoken to. She 0:11:45.210 --> 0:11:48.849 needed it to make sense. She needed someone to prove 0:11:48.850 --> 0:11:52.689 from the Bible what they were talking about was true. 0:11:52.850 --> 0:11:57.170 And so Lydia responded to the sound clear teaching of 0:11:57.170 --> 0:12:01.620 the Apostle Paul as he explained Scripture to her. And 0:12:01.620 --> 0:12:04.739 finally it clicked in her mind and it made sense. 0:12:04.740 --> 0:12:09.780 And she came to God. She needed the. It tells us in acts chapter 0:13:49.420 --> 0:13:55.300 16 that when Paul and Silas were on their way 0:13:55.300 --> 0:13:59.180 to this place of prayer, in verse 16, it says 0:13:59.780 --> 0:14:02.550 they were met by a female slave who had a 0:14:02.550 --> 0:14:06.470 spirit by which she predicted the future. That's called a 0:14:06.470 --> 0:14:12.589 spirit of divination. She earned a great deal of money 0:14:12.590 --> 0:14:17.510 for her owners by fortune telling, and she followed Paul 0:14:17.750 --> 0:14:20.950 and the rest of us shouting, these men are servants 0:14:20.950 --> 0:14:23.750 of the Most High God who are telling you the 0:14:23.750 --> 0:14:28.150 way to be saved. She kept this up for many days. 0:14:29.590 --> 0:14:33.430 This was a slave girl, a young slave girl. In 0:14:33.430 --> 0:14:37.110 the days of the Roman colonies. Slaves were considered a 0:14:37.150 --> 0:14:41.750 piece of property. People could kill them, dispose of them, 0:14:41.790 --> 0:14:45.510 sell them, abuse them, and there would be no criminal 0:14:45.510 --> 0:14:50.390 charges because they were considered a piece of property, like 0:14:50.390 --> 0:14:54.150 a piece of furniture would be to the masters. This 0:14:54.150 --> 0:14:59.960 young girl had a special gift. Her owners had Discovered 0:15:01.040 --> 0:15:07.840 that she had this capacity to foretell the future. She 0:15:07.840 --> 0:15:11.960 had glimpses into the future. What would happen her. Her 0:15:11.960 --> 0:15:15.680 reputation had spread so much that people were coming and 0:15:15.680 --> 0:15:20.880 paying big bucks for her to foretell their future, as 0:15:20.880 --> 0:15:22.560 she would be one of the ladies that as you 0:15:22.920 --> 0:15:26.040 that you pass her house and she would have a 0:15:26.080 --> 0:15:31.560 neon sign. Psychic reader, come in, let me read your palm. 0:15:33.000 --> 0:15:35.720 But she was making a lot of money, and her 0:15:35.720 --> 0:15:40.080 masters were promoting her as a fortune teller. If you 0:15:40.080 --> 0:15:43.760 want to know your future, come. Let her lay hands 0:15:43.760 --> 0:15:46.720 on you. Look into your eyes and she will predict 0:15:46.720 --> 0:15:51.000 your future. Your future. Now, she had a supernatural ability, 0:15:51.000 --> 0:15:54.040 but it wasn't an ability given to her by God. 0:15:54.040 --> 0:15:57.000 It was an ability given to her by a spirit. 0:15:59.600 --> 0:16:04.360 And when she saw Paul and Silas, she recognized the 0:16:04.360 --> 0:16:07.120 spirit inside of her. Recognized that they were men of God. 0:16:07.600 --> 0:16:10.680 And so she started shouting out, these are men of God. 0:16:10.840 --> 0:16:13.560 They have a message from God. They are proclaiming the 0:16:13.560 --> 0:16:19.080 way of salvation. Now, any casual observer could have concluded 0:16:19.080 --> 0:16:22.600 that she had the Holy Spirit and not an evil spirit, 0:16:22.600 --> 0:16:26.760 because sometimes an evil spirit masquerades as the Holy Spirit. 0:16:26.800 --> 0:16:30.880 How many of you know that? I know people in this. Well, 0:16:30.880 --> 0:16:33.160 I've talked to a lot of people, and you may 0:16:33.160 --> 0:16:36.800 be one of them that in your past background you 0:16:36.800 --> 0:16:40.640 would go to people that had quote unquote, spiritual powers 0:16:42.080 --> 0:16:47.080 and they would do their heebie jeebie over. You blow smoke, 0:16:47.840 --> 0:16:55.280 crack eggs. You know what I'm talking about. A little 0:16:55.320 --> 0:16:59.840 curandera down the street. I'm not going to ask you. 0:16:59.880 --> 0:17:01.440 How many of you been to. One, because I don't 0:17:01.440 --> 0:17:02.880 want to know. I'm not sure I want to know. 0:17:04.800 --> 0:17:07.080 But you've been to that background where and you think, well, 0:17:07.080 --> 0:17:10.280 she's a spiritual person. Why? Well, she had a Bible 0:17:10.280 --> 0:17:13.040 and a picture of Jesus as she was cracking her 0:17:13.040 --> 0:17:15.960 eggs on my stomach and blowing smoke over me and and, 0:17:15.960 --> 0:17:18.560 and breaking a curse over me. So I just thought 0:17:18.560 --> 0:17:21.320 she was of God. I thought she was a Christian. 0:17:21.640 --> 0:17:27.320 The enemy at masquerades as as God himself. Anything that 0:17:27.320 --> 0:17:32.920 God does, the enemy tries to replicate and duplicate and imitate, 0:17:32.920 --> 0:17:39.119 to confuse believers. This woman had a spirit of divination. 0:17:40.400 --> 0:17:43.359 She was able to tell the future. And then the 0:17:43.359 --> 0:17:46.679 Bible says, I love this because it's the apostle Paul 0:17:46.680 --> 0:17:52.360 it's talking about. And it tells us that in verse 18, 0:17:52.640 --> 0:17:55.280 she kept this up for many days. Every time Paul 0:17:55.280 --> 0:17:57.639 and Silas passed, she would follow them, saying, these are 0:17:57.640 --> 0:18:00.290 men of God. Listen to their message. They bring the 0:18:00.290 --> 0:18:02.730 way of salvation. And then it tells us in this 0:18:02.730 --> 0:18:10.050 verse that finally it says, finally Paul became so annoyed. 0:18:11.050 --> 0:18:14.970 Aren't you glad that Paul became annoyed? Isn't good to 0:18:15.010 --> 0:18:16.649 know a man of God that wrote a bunch of 0:18:16.650 --> 0:18:20.770 books in the Bible gets angry. Paul became so annoyed 0:18:21.850 --> 0:18:25.330 that he turned around and he said to the spirit, 0:18:25.490 --> 0:18:29.450 in the name of Jesus Christ, I command you, come 0:18:29.450 --> 0:18:34.290 out of her. And at that moment her spirit left. Paul became angry, annoyed, and he turned 0:19:33.180 --> 0:19:36.500 around to the slave girl that was shouting at them 0:19:36.500 --> 0:19:40.420 and he said, in the name of Jesus, how many 0:19:40.420 --> 0:19:42.699 of you know there's power in the name of Jesus? 0:19:47.300 --> 0:19:51.780 In the name of Jesus. It's like when they tried to, 0:19:52.060 --> 0:19:54.820 the seven sons of Siva went and cast out. They 0:19:54.820 --> 0:19:57.460 were casting out demons in Jesus name, even though they 0:19:57.460 --> 0:20:01.620 weren't believers in Jesus yet. the demons recognize the name 0:20:01.619 --> 0:20:05.900 of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus Christ, 0:20:06.180 --> 0:20:09.500 the righteous One. Paul said, in the name of Jesus, 0:20:09.700 --> 0:20:13.580 come out of her. And at that very moment, this 0:20:13.580 --> 0:20:16.980 young girl that had had the spirit of divination given 0:20:16.980 --> 0:20:19.900 to her by a spirit that was oppressing her at 0:20:19.940 --> 0:20:24.460 that very moment, this young girl was liberated from that 0:20:24.460 --> 0:20:29.300 oppressive spirit. Now, for Paul, it was a victory. But 0:20:29.300 --> 0:20:32.859 for her masters, it was a defeat because suddenly what 0:20:32.859 --> 0:20:36.580 they were using to earn money, she lost her power 0:20:36.580 --> 0:20:40.740 to foretell the future. And so the Bible says that 0:20:40.740 --> 0:20:44.219 her masters became very angry at Paul and Silas. Don't 0:20:44.220 --> 0:20:49.420 mess with an unrighteous person's money because that will stir 0:20:49.420 --> 0:20:53.100 up a riot. They didn't care about this slave girl, 0:20:53.100 --> 0:20:56.460 but when they stopped earning money, then suddenly they were 0:20:56.460 --> 0:21:00.859 ready to cause a riot. You know, sometimes the world 0:21:00.859 --> 0:21:04.060 is that way. You know that right now people don't 0:21:04.060 --> 0:21:06.260 care that much what we believe in. People don't care 0:21:06.260 --> 0:21:09.660 that much what we preach about, but mess with the income. 0:21:09.859 --> 0:21:14.020 And then suddenly there's a riot. Oh, they not they might. 0:21:14.060 --> 0:21:18.020 They got the pimps on 47th Street. May not care 0:21:18.020 --> 0:21:19.899 what we believe. May not care that this is a 0:21:19.900 --> 0:21:23.740 church here, but you start converting prostitutes and having them 0:21:23.740 --> 0:21:26.939 leave that lifestyle and come to God, and then suddenly 0:21:26.940 --> 0:21:29.580 the unrighteous have a problem with the church because they're 0:21:29.580 --> 0:21:33.260 losing their income and their money. How about it? I 0:21:33.260 --> 0:21:35.980 believe when the Church of God begins to take influence 0:21:35.980 --> 0:21:37.739 in a city, and when we begin to change the 0:21:37.740 --> 0:21:40.139 culture of a city, then we begin to change the 0:21:40.140 --> 0:21:43.020 way people make money in a city as well. And 0:21:43.020 --> 0:21:45.980 the righteous begin to prosper, and the unrighteous begin to 0:21:46.020 --> 0:21:50.580 have less prosperity, because the kingdom of God brings about 0:21:50.580 --> 0:21:55.459 a cultural change. And sometimes people resent that when it 0:21:55.460 --> 0:22:00.070 begins to happen. And so we have a businesswoman that 0:22:00.070 --> 0:22:03.670 she had to hear the sound of sound teaching. We 0:22:03.670 --> 0:22:06.990 have a slave girl that she didn't need teaching. Even 0:22:06.990 --> 0:22:09.150 if they would have given her teaching, she would have 0:22:09.150 --> 0:22:12.510 been blind to it. What she needed is the sound 0:22:12.510 --> 0:22:17.109 of a power encounter. Paul had to shout, be set 0:22:17.109 --> 0:22:19.950 free in the name of Jesus. She didn't need a 0:22:19.950 --> 0:22:24.629 Bible study in which she was being taught the Word 0:22:24.630 --> 0:22:27.790 of God in depth. Word of God. She needed a 0:22:27.790 --> 0:22:30.949 power encounter with God.
