They have been diagnosed and reread people, 0:02:12.210 --> 0:02:17.209 having interpreted it in different ways, because Matthew chapter 24 0:02:17.210 --> 0:02:23.410 and 25 are Jesus explanation of how we need to 0:02:23.450 --> 0:02:29.970 ready ourselves for what the Bible calls the end times. Now, 0:02:31.770 --> 0:02:35.930 I know just saying that scares some of you, because 0:02:35.930 --> 0:02:38.770 I believe that there's two extremes when we talk about 0:02:39.010 --> 0:02:43.169 the end times. I think there's the one on one extreme. 0:02:43.169 --> 0:02:47.049 You have the doubters, the people that say nothing's ever 0:02:47.050 --> 0:02:50.570 going to change. And on the other extreme, there 0:03:08.730 --> 0:03:12.970 are the conspiracy theorists, the alarmists, the people that are 0:03:12.970 --> 0:03:17.130 always interpreting every event that happens as, let's build a 0:03:17.169 --> 0:03:22.410 bunker in our basement, let's get the waters and let's 0:03:22.410 --> 0:03:27.010 get the, uh, let's prepare for the end of the world. 0:03:27.010 --> 0:03:31.609 And they're predicting and everything is about the end is coming. 0:03:31.610 --> 0:03:34.169 And so you have, at one extreme, the alarmist, at 0:03:34.169 --> 0:03:37.330 the other extreme the doubters. But I believe that Jesus 0:03:37.330 --> 0:03:40.890 gives us a bit of a different perspective. And I 0:03:40.890 --> 0:03:44.450 want to focus on that today as we look at 0:03:44.450 --> 0:03:48.130 this passage on the End Times. Now, recently, I was 0:03:48.130 --> 0:03:52.970 with my wife in a little town in Spain that 0:03:52.970 --> 0:03:56.090 we had never been to before, and I was trying 0:03:56.090 --> 0:03:59.650 to make my way to the hotel that we were 0:03:59.650 --> 0:04:03.540 staying at. now. And like most men, I just told 0:04:03.540 --> 0:04:08.420 my wife, follow me. I know where I'm going. How 0:04:08.420 --> 0:04:11.700 many of you wives have heard that before? And she said, well, 0:04:12.180 --> 0:04:16.100 how exactly are you going to get there? I instinctively, honey, 0:04:16.339 --> 0:04:19.060 I'll know how to get there. And so as we 0:04:19.060 --> 0:04:22.100 started to walk. Now I always get there. I may 0:04:22.100 --> 0:04:24.580 not always get there. The straightest path. Sometimes I take 0:04:24.580 --> 0:04:28.380 a scenic route where people have never been before. Tourists 0:04:28.380 --> 0:04:31.540 have never toured before. And sometimes we see the bad 0:04:31.540 --> 0:04:34.180 neighborhoods in the city while I'm walking or there. But 0:04:34.180 --> 0:04:38.260 I always get there one way or another. And it has a feature where you hit 0:04:53.140 --> 0:04:56.099 walk and then it starts telling you how to get there. 0:04:56.100 --> 0:04:58.339 So on the map, I could see where I was 0:04:58.339 --> 0:05:02.340 at because there was a little flashing dot and I 0:05:02.339 --> 0:05:05.460 could see the point where we were going. So I 0:05:05.500 --> 0:05:08.140 saw where we at the point where we were going, 0:05:08.140 --> 0:05:11.900 but in between, I wasn't sure what that would look like. 0:05:12.580 --> 0:05:16.060 So I started to follow my GPS, Google Maps, and 0:05:16.060 --> 0:05:19.980 it took us through a well. We turned into a 0:05:19.980 --> 0:05:25.419 very narrow, long, dark alley that not even a car 0:05:25.420 --> 0:05:28.979 would fit through. And my wife said, I'm not going 0:05:28.980 --> 0:05:33.940 in there. I'm saying, well, honey, GPS says. So I 0:05:33.980 --> 0:05:36.860 convinced her to go through this dark alley. There was 0:05:36.900 --> 0:05:41.380 horse manure there. It looked like a scary dark alley. 0:05:41.380 --> 0:05:44.580 And I kept telling her, I'm not sure exactly how 0:05:44.580 --> 0:05:47.900 we're going to get there, but I know the dot 0:05:47.940 --> 0:05:54.219 is just ahead. And finally we arrived. And I think 0:05:54.220 --> 0:06:00.100 sometimes biblical prophecy is like that. We know the destination 0:06:00.100 --> 0:06:02.950 Donation point and we sort of know where we're at. 0:06:02.950 --> 0:06:05.110 But what lies in between is a bit of a 0:06:05.110 --> 0:06:08.710 mystery how hard it will be, how narrow the path 0:06:08.710 --> 0:06:11.910 will be, how challenging it will be is a bit 0:06:11.910 --> 0:06:14.270 of a mystery. And so today we're going to look 0:06:14.270 --> 0:06:17.870 at the destination point and look at what Jesus says 0:06:17.870 --> 0:06:24.870 about the path to get to that destination point. Matthew 0:06:26.190 --> 0:06:33.790 chapter 24 talks about the end times. Now, as I 0:06:33.790 --> 0:06:37.510 was studying this, I also discovered that we have a 0:06:37.550 --> 0:06:42.469 long history of making predictions about when the end will come. 0:06:43.110 --> 0:06:45.710 In fact, if you research it a little bit, you'll 0:06:45.710 --> 0:06:48.950 realize that since the days of Jesus, people have been 0:06:48.950 --> 0:06:54.589 making predictions about the day, the hour, the month, the year, 0:06:54.589 --> 0:06:59.710 and the time. I was really astounded about how many 0:06:59.710 --> 0:07:04.469 religious groups over the last 2000 years have made predictions 0:07:04.470 --> 0:07:08.550 about the year, the day and the month. And I 0:07:08.830 --> 0:07:10.710 could spend a lot of time telling you all of 0:07:10.710 --> 0:07:13.989 the religious groups, both Christian and non-Christian, that talk about 0:07:13.990 --> 0:07:19.150 the end of the world, the predictions about some catastrophic 0:07:19.150 --> 0:07:23.470 event that will end the world Armageddon. And the history 0:07:23.470 --> 0:07:30.110 is full of prophetic predictions and false predictions about the 0:07:30.110 --> 0:07:33.550 end of the world. For example, in the second century, 0:07:33.950 --> 0:07:38.309 a group of people called the Montanists, which were a 0:07:38.590 --> 0:07:41.070 kind of a break off of Christianity where there were 0:07:41.070 --> 0:07:44.750 a lot of prophets and prophetess. This movement predicted that 0:07:44.750 --> 0:07:49.870 Jesus would come sometime during their lifetime and establish the 0:07:49.870 --> 0:07:54.190 New Jerusalem in a city called Pepuza in Asia minor. 0:07:54.750 --> 0:07:58.630 They said, Jesus is coming in our lifetime and he's 0:07:58.630 --> 0:08:02.960 going to establish his kingdom in this area and it 0:08:02.960 --> 0:08:09.920 didn't happen. Years later, one of the greatest moments where 0:08:10.400 --> 0:08:13.680 hundreds of thousands of people expected the end of the 0:08:13.680 --> 0:08:16.440 world in the coming of Jesus was at the turn 0:08:16.440 --> 0:08:22.480 of the millennium, at the year 1000. Literally hundreds of 0:08:22.480 --> 0:08:27.000 thousands of people in Europe expected that the year 1000 0:08:27.040 --> 0:08:30.200 would be the end of the world. In fact, so 0:08:30.200 --> 0:08:33.400 many people believed it that then there was such a 0:08:33.440 --> 0:08:35.520 fervor that it was the end of the world, that 0:08:35.520 --> 0:08:41.160 many people quit their jobs. Many farmers did not farm 0:08:41.160 --> 0:08:43.800 because they expected, hey, why am I going to farm 0:08:44.040 --> 0:08:47.520 if no one's going to be here to harvest the farm? 0:08:47.520 --> 0:08:52.320 In fact, there's a couple of nations. Christianized nations went 0:08:52.320 --> 0:08:56.520 to war with some pagan nations for the full purpose 0:08:56.520 --> 0:08:59.600 of converting them before the end of the world. The 0:08:59.640 --> 0:09:05.040 year 1000 came, the year 1000 left and Jesus had 0:09:05.040 --> 0:09:10.239 not come. I read also that there's a few religious 0:09:10.240 --> 0:09:14.920 groups that started because of their founders predicted the end 0:09:14.920 --> 0:09:17.440 of the world. For example, a fellow by the name 0:09:17.440 --> 0:09:22.760 of Joseph Smith who started the Mormon movement in 1835. 0:09:22.800 --> 0:09:27.520 He predicted that Jesus would come in 56 years from then. 0:09:28.280 --> 0:09:31.280 So all of the followers believed that Jesus would come 0:09:31.280 --> 0:09:40.599 in 56 years. Well, 1891 came, 1891 left and Jesus 0:09:40.600 --> 0:09:46.120 had not come. Charles Russell, who started the Jehovah Witness movement. 0:09:46.559 --> 0:09:50.959 He predicted that in 1914 it would be the end 0:09:50.960 --> 0:09:54.480 of the world. Armageddon would come, that everything as we 0:09:54.480 --> 0:09:58.720 know it would end. In 1914, hundreds of his followers 0:09:58.720 --> 0:10:02.290 left their jobs and went throughout the world going door 0:10:02.330 --> 0:10:04.850 to door telling people, get ready, the end of the 0:10:04.850 --> 0:10:08.250 world is coming. You only have two years to get 0:10:08.250 --> 0:10:11.329 ready because Armageddon is going to happen. That world is 0:10:11.330 --> 0:10:16.410 going to end. It's going to be a huge catastrophic event. 0:10:16.450 --> 0:10:21.849 The end is here. And 1914 came. People waited, expected 0:10:21.890 --> 0:10:24.770 on October the 2nd of 1914. They thought the year 0:10:24.770 --> 0:10:30.170 was it was going to end October came, October left 0:10:30.970 --> 0:10:38.450 and the world was the same. More recently, one of 0:10:38.450 --> 0:10:42.610 the biggest. Well, in 1800s, a man by the name 0:10:42.610 --> 0:10:48.090 of William Miller predicted that Christ would return on April 3rd, 1843. 0:10:48.130 --> 0:10:53.610 Anybody have their birthday in April the 3rd? No. Oh. 0:10:53.650 --> 0:10:57.449 Over here! Yeah. One did all right. Big day in history. 0:10:59.530 --> 0:11:06.530 Miller believed that on April the 3rd, 1843, that Jesus 0:11:06.530 --> 0:11:08.810 was coming. It would be the end of the world. 0:11:08.850 --> 0:11:11.370 He had a half a million followers in the United 0:11:11.370 --> 0:11:14.530 States of America that believed what he said. In fact, 0:11:14.530 --> 0:11:17.370 some of them, on April the 3rd, went up to 0:11:17.410 --> 0:11:21.770 mountains to be, I guess, closer to the heavens, and 0:11:21.770 --> 0:11:24.850 waited on the top of mountains. Some went to graveyards 0:11:24.850 --> 0:11:27.370 because they believed that their dead would resurrect, and they 0:11:27.370 --> 0:11:30.170 wanted to be next to uncle Harry as he came 0:11:30.170 --> 0:11:32.329 out of the grave. And so they went to graveyards. 0:11:32.330 --> 0:11:35.290 They went to the top of mountains, and they waited 0:11:35.290 --> 0:11:38.530 all through the night. This is the day, April the 3rd, 0:11:38.570 --> 0:11:42.850 the end of the world. Jesus is coming and it 0:11:42.850 --> 0:11:47.370 never happened. I remember just a few years ago, do 0:11:47.370 --> 0:11:52.410 you remember a fellow by the name of of Harold Camping, 0:11:53.370 --> 0:11:58.890 who on May 21st of 2011, predicted that this would 0:11:58.890 --> 0:12:03.300 be the end of the world. He had 5000 billboards 0:12:03.300 --> 0:12:06.459 throughout the United States of America and hundreds of his 0:12:06.460 --> 0:12:08.860 followers that quit their jobs. He owned a network of 0:12:08.860 --> 0:12:13.140 radio radio stations, and he began to predict the end 0:12:13.140 --> 0:12:16.180 of the world will come on May 21st. He had 0:12:16.179 --> 0:12:19.620 figured it out chronologically through the Bible, and explained that 0:12:19.620 --> 0:12:21.819 he had traced it all the all the way back 0:12:21.820 --> 0:12:26.140 to the prophecies of Daniel through the New Testament, and 0:12:26.140 --> 0:12:32.220 that he was sure that on May 21st, 2011, the 0:12:32.220 --> 0:12:35.579 world would come to an end. All his followers were 0:12:35.580 --> 0:12:40.180 shown with letter signs holding up. The end is here. 0:12:40.660 --> 0:12:44.100 They held it up. They held it up. And Jesus says that no 0:16:40.200 --> 0:16:43.280 one knows the day, the time or the moment. Anybody hear 0:17:27.320 --> 0:17:30.960 about that one? Yeah. And this person sent me a 0:17:30.960 --> 0:17:36.480 message distraught. They don't come regularly to this church, but 0:17:36.480 --> 0:17:40.240 they said I. What am I going to do? How 0:17:40.240 --> 0:17:46.080 do I prepare? Help me. I'm distraught over this. I 0:17:46.119 --> 0:17:55.440 just messaged him back. Don't quit your job. Well, you 0:17:55.440 --> 0:17:57.919 need to do is what you do every day. Hopefully 0:17:57.920 --> 0:17:59.520 you get up in the morning. Let me begin 0:18:28.010 --> 0:18:31.850 reading in verse one of Matthew 24. Jesus left the 0:18:31.850 --> 0:18:36.490 temple and was walking away when his disciples came to 0:18:36.490 --> 0:18:41.250 him to call his attention to its buildings, the buildings 0:18:41.250 --> 0:18:44.810 of the temple. Jesus was making a prophetic prediction that this 0:18:56.970 --> 0:19:01.620 magnificent temple that all the Jews were in awe over 0:19:01.660 --> 0:19:06.179 would be completely destroyed coming soon. That was a prophetic word. 0:19:07.100 --> 0:19:12.980 The disciples. It was like a bomb dropped in them. 0:19:13.420 --> 0:19:19.020 It was like you showing some visitors around downtown Chicago 0:19:19.020 --> 0:19:21.659 and you point to the Sears Tower. I still call 0:19:21.660 --> 0:19:23.900 it the Sears Tower. I can't convince myself to call 0:19:23.900 --> 0:19:27.580 it the Willis. Anybody else with me here today? Alright, alright. 0:19:27.580 --> 0:19:30.060 Just making sure you're with me. To me, it's the Sears, 0:19:30.060 --> 0:19:34.580 not the Willis. And walking by the Sears Tower and 0:19:34.580 --> 0:19:37.500 someone says, oh, by the way, not a beam of 0:19:37.500 --> 0:19:40.260 the Sears Tower will be left one upon it will 0:19:40.260 --> 0:19:45.020 be utterly destroyed. You would be aghast at that. You 0:19:45.020 --> 0:19:47.540 would think, well, it has to take a nuclear bomb 0:19:47.540 --> 0:19:52.340 or some some catastrophic event that will tear down the 0:19:52.380 --> 0:19:56.340 Sears Tower. Well, the disciples were shocked that Jesus said 0:19:56.380 --> 0:19:59.699 of the temple that it would be destroyed. They walked 0:19:59.700 --> 0:20:04.980 for about a mile. Thinking about this, conversing about this, 0:20:04.980 --> 0:20:08.140 murmuring about this. And when they got to a private place, 0:20:08.420 --> 0:20:12.179 the disciples went to Jesus, who was sitting in the 0:20:12.180 --> 0:20:16.540 Mount of Olives. And the disciples came to him privately. 0:20:16.540 --> 0:20:21.140 And they said to him, when will this happen? And 0:20:21.140 --> 0:20:24.660 what will be the sign of your coming and the 0:20:24.700 --> 0:20:28.700 end of the age? Now this is what brings about 0:20:28.700 --> 0:20:33.379 the conclusion of this chapter. The reason this is confusing 0:20:33.859 --> 0:20:38.260 is that in Matthew chapter 24 and 25, Jesus is 0:20:38.260 --> 0:20:45.300 actually answering three questions with one answer. The disciples assumed 0:20:45.820 --> 0:20:48.980 that the destruction of the temple would mark the end 0:20:48.980 --> 0:20:52.860 of the world, but it was not so. Little did 0:20:52.859 --> 0:20:57.580 they know that 40 years after their conversation that the 0:20:57.580 --> 0:21:00.900 destruction of the temple would happen. It would not be 0:21:00.900 --> 0:21:02.940 the end of the world. It would be the end 0:21:02.940 --> 0:21:06.060 of Jerusalem, but not the end of the world. So 0:21:06.060 --> 0:21:09.859 Jesus is answering, when will the temple be torn down? 0:21:10.660 --> 0:21:13.540 What are the signs of the coming of Jesus? And 0:21:13.540 --> 0:21:15.620 when will be the end of the world? Well, those women said, these lies started 0:22:31.190 --> 0:22:33.070 when I was in my teen years and in my 0:22:33.070 --> 0:22:36.030 teen years. So Nancy and I worked together to write 0:22:36.030 --> 0:22:38.950 both lies Young Women Believe for teens and then Lies 0:22:38.990 --> 0:22:42.350 Girls believe for the 8 to 12 year old girls. 0:22:42.750 --> 0:22:45.869 So this is for 8 to 12 year olds specifically, 0:22:45.869 --> 0:22:49.870 by the way, I just think this is so, so needed. Can you identify what 0:23:09.310 --> 0:23:11.910 you say are the top say three lies. 0:23:12.430 --> 0:23:15.590 God is not enough. If we don't believe that God 0:23:15.590 --> 0:23:19.590 is enough, then that dismantles and affects everything else around us. 0:23:19.590 --> 0:23:22.510 And one of the ways that shows up is emotions, 0:23:22.510 --> 0:23:25.350 which I just addressed. Emotions are one of the telltale 0:23:25.350 --> 0:23:28.149 signs that we aren't believing God is who he says 0:23:28.150 --> 0:23:31.270 he is, and he will be in our lives who 0:23:31.270 --> 0:23:34.830 he says he will be. So we believe God isn't enough. 0:23:34.830 --> 0:23:36.910 I need the car, or the house or the job 0:23:36.910 --> 0:23:39.910 or whatever. But as as tweens, they tend to really 0:23:39.910 --> 0:23:42.550 believe the lie. God isn't enough. I need the friend. 0:23:43.109 --> 0:23:47.270 And friends lead you down a road of believing all 0:23:47.270 --> 0:23:51.150 kinds of other lies. Peer pressure is either a great 0:23:51.150 --> 0:23:54.830 gift in our lives that leads us to Jesus, or 0:23:54.830 --> 0:23:58.109 it is a great dismantling of our faith and leads 0:23:58.109 --> 0:24:01.080 us away from Jesus to counterfeits. And so I think 0:24:01.080 --> 0:24:03.959 that's probably one of the big lies. And you mentioned 0:24:04.000 --> 0:24:09.040 identity so many times if if that friend isn't from 0:24:09.040 --> 0:24:12.119 a source of biblical truth. A home that's grounded in 0:24:12.119 --> 0:24:16.040 biblical truth today, which of us feels good about ourselves? 0:24:16.040 --> 0:24:18.720 Our emotions are healthy in our in our middle school 0:24:18.720 --> 0:24:23.480 and pre-teen years. None of us.
