And, pastor, I love the fact that we're 0:00:40.200 --> 0:00:43.560 going to spend some time looking at the law today 0:00:43.560 --> 0:00:46.800 because I think so often, um, we tend to have 0:00:46.800 --> 0:00:50.519 people who want structure and rigidity and rules and tell 0:00:50.520 --> 0:00:52.520 me what I have to do to follow this and 0:00:52.520 --> 0:00:55.800 to be a good Christian. And the apostle Paul said, no, 0:00:55.840 --> 0:00:57.800 if you really want to live by that standard, you're 0:00:57.800 --> 0:01:00.720 going to see how far you are from Christ. You're 0:01:00.720 --> 0:01:03.800 going to see the fact that you truly do need him. 0:01:04.160 --> 0:01:06.440 The law is not bad, but man, what you need 0:01:06.440 --> 0:01:08.840 is so much more than just a list of rules, right? 0:01:08.880 --> 0:01:13.360 We need the grace of God. And because the law says, uh, 0:01:13.920 --> 0:01:19.160 do this and live. And Grace says, live and do 0:01:19.160 --> 0:01:23.240 this totally opposite. And so what happens when you put 0:01:23.240 --> 0:01:29.440 yourself under the law? You actually put chains on yourself 0:01:29.959 --> 0:01:32.680 because no one can keep it. Well, you can't keep 0:01:32.680 --> 0:01:35.720 the law. So when we talk about the law for 0:01:35.720 --> 0:01:38.919 our purposes today, let's just use the Ten Commandments. Yeah. 0:01:38.959 --> 0:01:42.480 Can't keep them. And the Bible says if you break one, 0:01:42.480 --> 0:01:45.600 you've broken them all. And so, you know, I don't 0:01:45.600 --> 0:01:49.320 know about you, but I broken 1 or 2 and 0:01:49.360 --> 0:01:54.680 have broken them all consistently. And so I realize that 0:01:54.680 --> 0:01:58.440 it's the grace of God. What is grace? Uh, I 0:01:58.480 --> 0:02:03.960 like this acronym, God's riches at Christ's expense, or God's 0:02:03.960 --> 0:02:08.960 redemption at Christ's expense, or God's resources at Christ's expense. 0:02:09.000 --> 0:02:14.760 Pick the one you like because he provides everything I need. 0:02:15.040 --> 0:02:19.760 He fulfilled the law, and now he fulfills it not 0:02:19.760 --> 0:02:24.200 just for me, but he fulfills it in me, and 0:02:24.200 --> 0:02:28.480 he fulfills it through me so that wow, I have 0:02:28.480 --> 0:02:35.200 to learn how. John 15 to abide in the vine. Yeah. 0:02:35.600 --> 0:02:38.400 Yeah. And I think that's something that we all are 0:02:38.400 --> 0:02:40.800 going to struggle to learn throughout our lives. And hopefully 0:02:40.800 --> 0:02:45.640 as we mature and we begin to experience that mercy 0:02:45.639 --> 0:02:48.200 and that grace of God in our lives, we begin 0:02:48.200 --> 0:02:51.880 to find the joy and the freedom that comes in that. 0:02:51.880 --> 0:02:53.359 But that's one of the things that I think many 0:02:53.360 --> 0:02:56.280 of us may struggle with, especially as new believers, to 0:02:56.320 --> 0:02:59.359 to really grasp this truth. Here is 0:03:08.910 --> 0:03:09.790 Pastor Ford. 0:03:10.830 --> 0:03:13.510 Now there are a lot of us. Uh, we're not 0:03:13.510 --> 0:03:18.669 completely saved. Uh, some of us, uh, are. Right foot 0:03:19.550 --> 0:03:25.430 needs redemption. Oh, everybody know what I'm talking about? Yeah. 0:03:25.470 --> 0:03:31.510 Because there's a clear sign. It says speed limit 55 0:03:31.630 --> 0:03:35.470 miles an hour. That's the law. As a matter of fact, 0:03:35.470 --> 0:03:40.070 behind that is the entire state of Illinois. All the 0:03:40.070 --> 0:03:44.670 power and authority of Illinois is in that sign. And 0:03:44.670 --> 0:03:49.350 it says, if you do 56, you're breaking the law. 0:03:50.190 --> 0:03:52.830 I was going to ask it, but I'm not. Is 0:03:52.830 --> 0:04:00.230 there anybody in here who drives, who's never broken the law? Yeah. 0:04:00.230 --> 0:04:03.310 And so the sign then it tells this is the 0:04:03.310 --> 0:04:07.670 standard do not exceed this. And so my right foot 0:04:07.670 --> 0:04:11.750 just ain't saved yet. But you know what? I notice 0:04:12.350 --> 0:04:17.790 that whenever I saw, uh, this officer with a blue 0:04:17.830 --> 0:04:22.030 uniform and a black and white checkered hat sitting in 0:04:22.029 --> 0:04:27.349 a patrol car, all of a sudden my foot came 0:04:27.350 --> 0:04:32.430 from his backslidden state, and it eased off of the pedal, 0:04:32.430 --> 0:04:36.150 and the car slowed down. And as I passed him, 0:04:36.150 --> 0:04:42.230 I looked out and I smiled. See, the person did 0:04:43.390 --> 0:04:48.630 what the sign could not. That's Paul's argument now as 0:04:48.630 --> 0:04:51.669 he begins to talk about, uh, what was the purpose 0:04:51.670 --> 0:04:55.230 of the law? It is, it is, uh, just like 0:04:55.230 --> 0:04:59.830 I repented and conform to the sign. The person did 0:04:59.830 --> 0:05:04.390 what the sign could not do caused me to conform 0:05:04.589 --> 0:05:06.430 to the sign. Don't forget that, because I'm going to 0:05:06.430 --> 0:05:10.310 use that argument all the way through verses 19 through 25, 0:05:10.630 --> 0:05:15.230 because that's Paul's argument in the next section, Galatians chapter 0:05:15.230 --> 0:05:19.710 319 through 25. Now he's just talked about the superiority 0:05:19.710 --> 0:05:23.029 of the promise. Now he's going to tell us about 0:05:23.029 --> 0:05:28.950 the inferiority of the law. So the promise is superior. Now, 0:05:28.950 --> 0:05:33.870 here's what Paul does that I love. He anticipates the 0:05:33.870 --> 0:05:40.990 question that his explanation or his interpretation will cause. So 0:05:40.990 --> 0:05:46.710 he anticipates their questions or the Judaizers rebuttal because they 0:05:46.710 --> 0:05:48.430 have a rebuttal and they're going to come in and 0:05:48.430 --> 0:05:51.229 say he's talking about the promise. He's saying the law 0:05:51.270 --> 0:05:56.670 was subservient to the promise. And so he anticipates their question. Uh, 0:05:56.670 --> 0:05:59.590 the rebuttal and and listen, listen, Paul did this all 0:05:59.589 --> 0:06:01.430 the time. Let me give you one example before I 0:06:01.430 --> 0:06:04.670 move on. I remember going in it was about 1999. 0:06:04.670 --> 0:06:08.870 I went to that great metropolis, Bayfield, Wisconsin. Uh, at 0:06:08.910 --> 0:06:13.469 that time, population 487 people. And when I got there, 0:06:13.510 --> 0:06:15.030 you know, I always try to get some kind of 0:06:15.070 --> 0:06:17.670 introduction to loosen up. This is what I said to him. 0:06:17.670 --> 0:06:20.349 I said, I'm from the great city of Chicago, and 0:06:20.390 --> 0:06:23.469 I bring you greetings where there are only two kinds 0:06:23.470 --> 0:06:26.270 of people. Uh, in the city of Chicago, when you 0:06:26.310 --> 0:06:29.710 cross the street, the quick and the dead. Uh, and 0:06:29.710 --> 0:06:32.110 then I said, you know, I'm from the Windy City, 0:06:32.110 --> 0:06:34.830 and I'm so glad to be in Bayfield. Uh, you know, 0:06:34.870 --> 0:06:39.270 the city where it gets so cold, uh, that some 0:06:39.270 --> 0:06:42.990 people have even seen local politicians with their hands in 0:06:42.990 --> 0:06:47.510 their own pockets. And then I ended it up by saying, yes, 0:06:47.670 --> 0:06:50.869 I bring you greetings from the city of Chicago, where 0:06:50.870 --> 0:06:57.510 there is more grace in Chicago than there is in Bayfield, Wisconsin. 0:06:57.550 --> 0:06:59.790 I say, now, you you don't believe me. But I 0:06:59.790 --> 0:07:04.390 got Scripture. The Bible says where sin did abounded, grace 0:07:04.390 --> 0:07:06.909 did much more abound. And so we have more sin 0:07:06.910 --> 0:07:09.910 in Chicago. So we have more grace than you have 0:07:09.910 --> 0:07:13.950 in Bayfield. But we have more sin because we have 0:07:13.950 --> 0:07:18.990 more people. And, uh, that was my introduction and was 0:07:18.990 --> 0:07:23.670 based on what Paul said in the book of Romans, 0:07:23.670 --> 0:07:26.230 Romans six one and two. Now, now, just turn there. 0:07:26.230 --> 0:07:28.390 Let me show you what Paul does. And if you're 0:07:28.390 --> 0:07:31.150 familiar with his writings, you know he does it all 0:07:31.150 --> 0:07:35.270 the time. So he finishes and he lets us know, uh, 0:07:35.310 --> 0:07:41.790 that where sin reigned to death. Now grace reigns through righteousness. 0:07:41.830 --> 0:07:45.230 Verse 21 of chapter five. Unto eternal life by Jesus 0:07:45.230 --> 0:07:48.430 Christ our Lord. So he's saying, listen, where there was 0:07:48.430 --> 0:07:53.310 abundant sin, there's abundant grace through Jesus Christ our Lord. 0:07:53.350 --> 0:07:57.230 Now here's what he anticipates. Somebody's going to say, oh, 0:07:57.950 --> 0:08:02.110 since I have grace, it's okay to sin because the 0:08:02.110 --> 0:08:05.590 more I sin, the more grace I get. Now notice 0:08:05.590 --> 0:08:11.710 how he responds to that. He says God has forbid 0:08:12.350 --> 0:08:16.790 that we who are delivered from sin should live in 0:08:16.790 --> 0:08:21.070 sin any longer. What's he saying? Grace doesn't give us 0:08:21.270 --> 0:08:24.510 the right to live like yard dogs. You see that? Now, 0:08:24.510 --> 0:08:27.590 if you're familiar with Paul's writings, he does that all 0:08:27.590 --> 0:08:29.990 the time. Look at verse 14 and 15 of the 0:08:30.030 --> 0:08:33.550 same chapter, Romans chapter six, 14 and 15. Notice what 0:08:33.550 --> 0:08:38.150 he does. He does the same thing. He anticipates somebody 0:08:38.190 --> 0:08:41.990 saying something against what he just said. That makes the 0:08:41.990 --> 0:08:47.790 most sense. So in verse 14 he says, for sin 0:08:47.790 --> 0:08:50.030 shall not have dominion over you, for you are not 0:08:50.030 --> 0:08:52.990 under the law, but under grace. What shall we say then? 0:08:52.990 --> 0:08:56.150 Shall we sin, because we're not under the law, but 0:08:56.150 --> 0:09:01.220 under grace? God forbid. So over and over again he's 0:09:01.220 --> 0:09:05.660 trying to dispel. Now. Now apply it. This truth. Where 0:09:05.660 --> 0:09:09.020 do I understand this truth in what is being taught 0:09:09.059 --> 0:09:13.300 today about eternal security? That there are those who say, 0:09:13.420 --> 0:09:16.900 if we teach eternal security, we're saying, as a Christian, 0:09:16.900 --> 0:09:19.980 you can do anything and everything you want to do 0:09:19.980 --> 0:09:24.220 and still maintain your salvation, no matter how evil it is. 0:09:24.260 --> 0:09:28.580 And Paul says, that's because you don't understand grace. Grace 0:09:28.580 --> 0:09:32.100 does not have a person say, well, since I can 0:09:32.100 --> 0:09:35.340 get away with it, let me do it. That's like 0:09:35.340 --> 0:09:39.100 somebody who's married, who's faithful to their spouse because their 0:09:39.100 --> 0:09:41.540 spouse trusts them. And they say, well, since she trusts me, 0:09:41.540 --> 0:09:44.260 I might as well just go ahead. Give me a 0:09:44.260 --> 0:09:49.500 chick on the side. So he anticipates the question in Galatians. 0:09:49.540 --> 0:09:51.780 Now notice what he. Notice how he starts it off. 0:09:52.059 --> 0:09:56.140 He's anticipating what the other side or what these believers 0:09:56.140 --> 0:10:01.179 who have been duped by these Judaizers, he says, I 0:10:01.179 --> 0:10:05.900 want to answer the question before you ask it. What's 0:10:05.900 --> 0:10:08.620 he going to do? Listen, we live in a day 0:10:09.140 --> 0:10:11.740 when we need these four things he's going to do. 0:10:11.740 --> 0:10:14.260 What's he going to do? He's going to give clarity 0:10:14.260 --> 0:10:18.580 about God's word so that they can have comprehension of 0:10:18.580 --> 0:10:23.020 God's Word so that they'll be confident in God's Word 0:10:23.260 --> 0:10:26.340 and live consecrated by God's Word. Let me say it again. 0:10:26.340 --> 0:10:28.500 I'm going to play that back, that in this section. 0:10:28.500 --> 0:10:30.980 What he's going to do is he's going to give 0:10:30.980 --> 0:10:35.460 them some clarity about God's Word so that they can 0:10:35.460 --> 0:10:40.820 have comprehension of God's Word so that they will be 0:10:40.820 --> 0:10:47.579 confident in God's Word and live consecrated to God's Word. 0:10:47.580 --> 0:10:51.780 Everybody with me, so that they'll say, this is the roadmap. 0:10:51.940 --> 0:10:54.500 You say, are we living in a day? We're living 0:10:54.500 --> 0:10:59.300 in a day when this is more than necessary. Barnum 0:10:59.300 --> 0:11:03.620 did some research about Christians. These are professing Christians. These 0:11:03.620 --> 0:11:06.060 are not people who say they're atheists. These are not 0:11:06.059 --> 0:11:09.340 people who say they are agnostics. These are not people 0:11:09.340 --> 0:11:12.220 who say they're not church goers. These are people he 0:11:12.220 --> 0:11:16.580 polled who are church goers. And here's what they said. 0:11:16.780 --> 0:11:21.540 Here's what they said, that, uh, people are inherently good. 0:11:21.900 --> 0:11:25.580 And our primary purpose from God is to enjoy life. 0:11:25.980 --> 0:11:30.300 Our most important responsibility is to take care of our family. 0:11:30.380 --> 0:11:35.739 Listen to this. 81% said they believed. The Bible teaches 0:11:35.740 --> 0:11:40.740 that God helps those who help themselves. 77% believe that 0:11:40.740 --> 0:11:43.940 people are blessed by God so they can enjoy life 0:11:43.940 --> 0:11:47.980 as much as possible. 60% said that Satan is not 0:11:47.980 --> 0:11:51.900 a living being, but just a symbol of evil. Christians 0:11:51.900 --> 0:11:56.860 now 55% said, if a person is generally good and 0:11:56.860 --> 0:11:59.740 does enough good for others, they will earn a place 0:11:59.740 --> 0:12:06.140 in heaven. 44% believe that Jesus committed sins while he 0:12:06.140 --> 0:12:11.179 walked on this earth. 61% believe that the Holy Spirit 0:12:11.179 --> 0:12:14.820 is not a living entity, but a symbol of God's 0:12:14.820 --> 0:12:20.620 presence and power. 40% believe that after Jesus was crucified, 0:12:20.740 --> 0:12:28.140 he did not physically return to life. And 34% said 0:12:28.380 --> 0:12:33.220 that there are some sins that even God himself cannot forgive. 0:12:34.420 --> 0:12:39.780 That's the state. Now remember, this is dated. The law had three basic primary responsibilities. 0:13:29.620 --> 0:13:33.940 The law was a guide to direct us. The law 0:13:33.940 --> 0:13:38.260 was a guardian to protect us. And the law was 0:13:38.260 --> 0:13:42.060 a governor. Kept us. Yeah. Direct us, protect us and 0:13:42.059 --> 0:13:45.500 kept us. That's what the law does. So here's what 0:13:45.500 --> 0:13:48.060 we're going to see. Let's break it down and let's 0:13:48.059 --> 0:13:51.100 look at it. So here now Paul, I want to 0:13:51.100 --> 0:13:53.660 I want to answer the question, and I want you 0:13:53.660 --> 0:13:56.620 to know what the law was all about. Why? Because 0:13:56.620 --> 0:14:01.780 there are people today. Aren't there Aren't there people today 0:14:02.340 --> 0:14:05.339 who say that you have to keep the law in 0:14:05.340 --> 0:14:08.980 order to be saved? Okay, let's take one branch of 0:14:08.980 --> 0:14:12.219 of of what they call Adventism. Uh, all of it's 0:14:12.220 --> 0:14:15.380 not the same. I'm not coloring all with the same brush. Uh, 0:14:15.380 --> 0:14:18.660 but there are those who say that if you are 0:14:19.140 --> 0:14:23.340 worshiping on Sunday and not on Saturday, you cannot be 0:14:23.340 --> 0:14:28.100 saved because you are a law breaker. And of course, 0:14:28.100 --> 0:14:30.580 we know that's not true. How do we know it? Uh, 0:14:30.580 --> 0:14:34.100 because of what we have in, uh, Colossians chapter two 0:14:34.740 --> 0:14:38.700 that tells us, uh, that one man esteems one day 0:14:38.820 --> 0:14:41.860 greater than the other. And so don't let anyone judge 0:14:41.860 --> 0:14:45.580 you on the day that you worship. That's Colossians 216 0:14:45.620 --> 0:14:50.860 through 23. Romans 14 uh five and six Paul said 0:14:50.860 --> 0:14:54.380 the same thing. Both of these are Pauline epistles, and 0:14:54.380 --> 0:14:57.220 he says the same thing. He says, listen, don't let 0:14:57.220 --> 0:15:00.810 people judge you about what day you worship. So then, 0:15:00.810 --> 0:15:02.970 now there are those in our day, like right up 0:15:03.010 --> 0:15:05.730 on 75th Street who say you have to be a 0:15:05.730 --> 0:15:08.770 Sabbath keeper and a Sabbath worshipper, or you don't know 0:15:08.770 --> 0:15:12.130 God at all. And so, you know, Paul says, look, 0:15:12.170 --> 0:15:16.050 I dispel that myth and I tell you that's not true. 0:15:16.370 --> 0:15:21.450 So then what was the purpose of the law? Verse 19. 0:15:22.210 --> 0:15:33.890 It exposes our sin. Verse 19 A it exposes our sin. Paul, 0:15:33.890 --> 0:15:35.690 what do you. What do you mean? It exposes our sin? 0:15:35.690 --> 0:15:39.570 Listen to it. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was 0:15:39.570 --> 0:15:44.530 added because of transgressions. Stop! So the word parabasis, it 0:15:44.530 --> 0:15:48.450 literally means the same thing as the other word. We 0:15:48.450 --> 0:15:52.250 looked at earlier to step over a line. He said 0:15:52.250 --> 0:15:57.570 it was added because it helped you to understand. You 0:15:57.570 --> 0:16:01.930 stepped over the line Before there was a consciousness of 0:16:01.930 --> 0:16:07.650 sin based on an internal witness. Your conscience. But we 0:16:07.690 --> 0:16:11.570 violate our conscience. And so God said, now you have 0:16:11.570 --> 0:16:15.850 to know my standard. So then the law was given 0:16:15.850 --> 0:16:20.570 so that we could see the standard of God, and 0:16:20.570 --> 0:16:24.930 that we cannot attain that standard. So then remember. Now remember, 0:16:25.090 --> 0:16:28.050 let me say it once again. So you understand, the 0:16:28.090 --> 0:16:34.170 Judaizers told people that the law can save you. Attitude. Attitude. 0:16:34.170 --> 0:16:39.410 Your gospel message. And Paul was saying the law was 0:16:39.410 --> 0:16:42.730 never intended to save us. So they are trying to 0:16:42.730 --> 0:16:46.410 get the law to do the opposite of what it 0:16:46.410 --> 0:16:48.650 was intended to do. Okay. Let me let me see 0:16:48.650 --> 0:16:52.530 if I can make it plain. Uh, anybody ever had 0:16:52.530 --> 0:16:57.810 an x ray? What did the x ray do if 0:16:57.810 --> 0:17:01.730 there was something wrong? It showed. It revealed. Did it 0:17:01.730 --> 0:17:06.130 help you heal? So all the x ray could do 0:17:06.330 --> 0:17:09.970 is just show you what was wrong? That's the law. 0:17:10.250 --> 0:17:15.410 All the law does is expose what's wrong. Look at 0:17:15.410 --> 0:17:19.970 Romans chapter five, verse 20. Look at Romans 520. Paul 0:17:19.970 --> 0:17:26.970 says in his writings in Romans chapter five and verse 20, moreover, 0:17:27.170 --> 0:17:34.450 the law entered that the offense might abound. But where 0:17:34.450 --> 0:17:37.570 sin abounded, grace did much more abound. So why did 0:17:37.570 --> 0:17:41.090 he give the law that the offense might abound, that 0:17:41.090 --> 0:17:45.490 we would be X-rayed and see that we can't do 0:17:45.490 --> 0:17:48.250 anything about it? Turn to Romans seven five. Listen to 0:17:48.250 --> 0:17:51.010 what he says. He says, for when we were in 0:17:51.010 --> 0:17:54.609 the flesh, the motions of sin which were by the law, 0:17:54.650 --> 0:17:58.290 did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. 0:17:58.410 --> 0:18:01.770 You know what he's saying there. The law can't save you. 0:18:01.810 --> 0:18:07.490 Want to know why? It instigates you to sin. Okay, okay. 0:18:07.530 --> 0:18:09.609 I know I'm the only one. When I was a 0:18:09.650 --> 0:18:12.490 matriculating Moody Bible Institute, we used to go out witnessing. 0:18:12.490 --> 0:18:15.290 And so we had a little park that was right on.
