John Morosi from 31 00:01:27,920 --> 00:01:30,800 Speaker 2: the MLB Network is gonna join us in thirty minutes. 32 00:01:31,120 --> 00:01:35,240 Speaker 2: He will be broadcasting from GABP tomorrow. And just about 33 00:01:35,240 --> 00:01:38,560 Speaker 2: an hour ago I got here after having been at 34 00:01:38,560 --> 00:01:41,760 Speaker 2: the University of Cincinnati for the Jared Calhoun press conference. 35 00:01:42,640 --> 00:01:46,360 Speaker 2: I had a chance after his press conference to spend 36 00:01:46,360 --> 00:01:48,960 Speaker 2: about ten minutes with him. I taped an interview and 37 00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:52,720 Speaker 2: you'll hear that coming up at three twenty. My initial impression. 38 00:01:53,560 --> 00:01:55,840 Speaker 2: And you know, at the end of the day, none 39 00:01:55,880 --> 00:01:58,160 Speaker 2: of us care that much about winning a press conference, 40 00:01:58,960 --> 00:02:00,840 Speaker 2: but if it does matter to you, at least in 41 00:02:00,880 --> 00:02:03,920 Speaker 2: the short term, I think Jared Calhoun checked that box. 42 00:02:03,960 --> 00:02:05,080 Speaker 3: He won the press conference. 43 00:02:05,400 --> 00:02:10,040 Speaker 2: If for no other reason that it genuinely feels like Look, 44 00:02:10,400 --> 00:02:12,240 Speaker 2: you get a high major job, you get a job 45 00:02:12,280 --> 00:02:13,920 Speaker 2: in the Big twelve, it's a big deal. It's a 46 00:02:13,919 --> 00:02:17,040 Speaker 2: step up, it's more money, it's more prestigeous, bigger opportunity. 47 00:02:17,160 --> 00:02:21,120 Speaker 2: That's great. I genuinely got the sense that this was 48 00:02:21,400 --> 00:02:24,200 Speaker 2: more than that for him. This is somebody who has 49 00:02:24,240 --> 00:02:28,760 Speaker 2: been considered part of the Bearcats family, and that's not 50 00:02:28,800 --> 00:02:31,600 Speaker 2: what it felt like five years ago. Nothing against Wes Miller, 51 00:02:31,639 --> 00:02:34,760 Speaker 2: who I think did an awesome job at reconnecting a 52 00:02:34,760 --> 00:02:36,720 Speaker 2: lot of former players with the program. This is no 53 00:02:36,840 --> 00:02:39,240 Speaker 2: knock on John Brandon, it's no knock on McK cronin. 54 00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:43,240 Speaker 2: But I got the sense for watching and listening to 55 00:02:43,320 --> 00:02:46,600 Speaker 2: Jared Calhoun. I don't like the term dream job. I 56 00:02:46,600 --> 00:02:49,560 Speaker 2: don't like the term destination. Look, I don't believe that 57 00:02:49,600 --> 00:02:52,480 Speaker 2: any of these coaches are ever in one place forever. 58 00:02:52,600 --> 00:02:54,960 Speaker 2: I don't look at any higher through that lens. But 59 00:02:56,040 --> 00:02:59,840 Speaker 2: I certainly believe that Jared Calhoun, for him, this is 60 00:02:59,840 --> 00:03:02,760 Speaker 2: more more than just to step up. This is one 61 00:03:02,800 --> 00:03:05,840 Speaker 2: of those dreams that come true. This is a chance 62 00:03:05,960 --> 00:03:09,560 Speaker 2: to I hate to say rebuild because it's not like 63 00:03:09,600 --> 00:03:11,960 Speaker 2: the Bearcats won four games last year, but it's a 64 00:03:12,040 --> 00:03:13,880 Speaker 2: chance to be a bigger part of something that he's 65 00:03:13,919 --> 00:03:17,440 Speaker 2: already been a big part of. And Bob Huggins being 66 00:03:17,480 --> 00:03:21,320 Speaker 2: there was significant, and former players like Corey Blunt and 67 00:03:21,360 --> 00:03:23,800 Speaker 2: Steve Logan, and I'm sure there were others who have 68 00:03:23,919 --> 00:03:26,400 Speaker 2: been there. I put this on social media last night. 69 00:03:26,480 --> 00:03:28,760 Speaker 2: Jared Calhoun has a lot of work to do. He's 70 00:03:28,800 --> 00:03:30,040 Speaker 2: got a lot of work to do in a very 71 00:03:30,040 --> 00:03:31,960 Speaker 2: short amount of time in terms of the roster and 72 00:03:32,520 --> 00:03:35,080 Speaker 2: figuring out who's going to stay from this past year's 73 00:03:35,120 --> 00:03:36,960 Speaker 2: team and who are they going to go get in 74 00:03:37,000 --> 00:03:40,480 Speaker 2: the portal, putting a staff together, which it really does 75 00:03:40,520 --> 00:03:42,720 Speaker 2: feel like most of his staff from Utah State is 76 00:03:42,720 --> 00:03:46,360 Speaker 2: going to come with him to Cincinnati to figuring out 77 00:03:46,400 --> 00:03:49,320 Speaker 2: how you get some high school kids to start his 78 00:03:49,400 --> 00:03:51,640 Speaker 2: freshman at U SEE. There's a lot that he has 79 00:03:51,680 --> 00:03:54,760 Speaker 2: to do, but it does feel like the runway has 80 00:03:55,520 --> 00:03:58,120 Speaker 2: rarely been more clear for a new head coach at 81 00:03:58,200 --> 00:04:00,560 Speaker 2: u SEE, where there's not a lot of talk about 82 00:04:00,640 --> 00:04:03,480 Speaker 2: who didn't get the job or whose feelings are hurt 83 00:04:03,480 --> 00:04:05,800 Speaker 2: about not getting the job. I also think it helps 84 00:04:06,040 --> 00:04:09,080 Speaker 2: there's a general manager in place. Corey Evans is a 85 00:04:09,120 --> 00:04:12,320 Speaker 2: holdover from the previous regime and that can't help but 86 00:04:12,360 --> 00:04:15,680 Speaker 2: be a benefit as they get to work putting together 87 00:04:15,760 --> 00:04:18,960 Speaker 2: a roster. My conversation with Jared Calhoun, you'll hear it 88 00:04:19,000 --> 00:04:22,440 Speaker 2: in just about ten minutes. I'm stoked, I'm stoked for him, 89 00:04:22,520 --> 00:04:25,359 Speaker 2: I'm stoked for the program, and it really does feel 90 00:04:25,400 --> 00:04:29,040 Speaker 2: like there's a clear runway for not long term success. 91 00:04:29,200 --> 00:04:32,200 Speaker 2: Time will tell, but it was hard to believe that 92 00:04:33,080 --> 00:04:35,920 Speaker 2: either Wes Miller or John Brandon, more so Wes than 93 00:04:35,960 --> 00:04:39,240 Speaker 2: John because John was frankly operating under a different set 94 00:04:39,240 --> 00:04:42,080 Speaker 2: of rules. But it felt like there was some roadblocks 95 00:04:42,200 --> 00:04:45,800 Speaker 2: for instant success, whether it was timing. Jared Calhoun got 96 00:04:45,800 --> 00:04:49,240 Speaker 2: this gig well before the period in the calendar where 97 00:04:49,240 --> 00:04:51,400 Speaker 2: Wes Miller and John Rannon got it, and it really 98 00:04:51,440 --> 00:04:56,200 Speaker 2: does feel like everybody who cares about UC basketball is 99 00:04:56,240 --> 00:04:58,800 Speaker 2: wrapping their arms around Jared Calhoun, and maybe a lot 100 00:04:58,839 --> 00:05:00,920 Speaker 2: of folks didn't have reason to five years ago or 101 00:05:00,960 --> 00:05:04,640 Speaker 2: seven years ago. This go round does feel like everybody's 102 00:05:04,680 --> 00:05:06,840 Speaker 2: on board, and I do think that makes the runway 103 00:05:07,160 --> 00:05:11,920 Speaker 2: clearer for short term success. We will see. Also talk 104 00:05:11,960 --> 00:05:15,280 Speaker 2: to John Cunningham. You'll hear that conversation in the five 105 00:05:15,320 --> 00:05:19,560 Speaker 2: o'clock hour. Meanwhile, twenty five hours from right now, the 106 00:05:19,600 --> 00:05:22,520 Speaker 2: first pitch will be delivered a great American ballpark, Reds 107 00:05:22,560 --> 00:05:26,039 Speaker 2: in Boston Red Sox, And let's be honest, man, the 108 00:05:26,080 --> 00:05:28,680 Speaker 2: day before opening day, the only thing anybody wants to 109 00:05:28,720 --> 00:05:31,680 Speaker 2: hear about his optimism, So we'll start with that. I 110 00:05:31,720 --> 00:05:34,680 Speaker 2: am beyond stoked to see what Sal Stewart can do 111 00:05:35,279 --> 00:05:38,680 Speaker 2: in what's gonna be his rookie season. Tommy Thrall and 112 00:05:38,720 --> 00:05:40,680 Speaker 2: I you'll hear us talk about this in the five 113 00:05:40,680 --> 00:05:43,039 Speaker 2: o'clock hour as well, the voice of the Reds. I 114 00:05:43,040 --> 00:05:45,240 Speaker 2: feel like everything that's ever been put in front of 115 00:05:45,240 --> 00:05:48,480 Speaker 2: Sal Stewart, he's he's cleared it. He's passed the test 116 00:05:48,480 --> 00:05:51,599 Speaker 2: with flying colors. Last year, it was arrive in the 117 00:05:51,600 --> 00:05:54,560 Speaker 2: big leagues and get thrust into a pennant chase, and 118 00:05:54,600 --> 00:05:55,800 Speaker 2: the guy did nothing but hit. 119 00:05:56,400 --> 00:05:58,720 Speaker 3: This spring, it was you got to make the team. 120 00:05:58,760 --> 00:06:01,080 Speaker 2: And I think all of us believe from the jump 121 00:06:01,360 --> 00:06:03,600 Speaker 2: that salth Stewart was gonna make the team. But it's 122 00:06:03,680 --> 00:06:07,440 Speaker 2: make the team and earn a starting gig. There's a 123 00:06:07,520 --> 00:06:10,000 Speaker 2: very good chance. I don't think the lineup for tomorrow 124 00:06:10,000 --> 00:06:11,760 Speaker 2: has come out yet, but there's a very good chance 125 00:06:11,800 --> 00:06:14,919 Speaker 2: you will see salth Stewart batting forth tomorrow. I feel 126 00:06:14,920 --> 00:06:18,479 Speaker 2: like everything he's been asked to do, every test he's 127 00:06:18,520 --> 00:06:21,799 Speaker 2: been asked to pass, he's passed it with flying colors. 128 00:06:22,760 --> 00:06:26,479 Speaker 2: I put on Twitter earlier today ten wagers for the 129 00:06:26,560 --> 00:06:29,039 Speaker 2: upcoming season, and he might not be a person who 130 00:06:29,080 --> 00:06:31,920 Speaker 2: likes to make a sports wager, and that's cool. One 131 00:06:31,960 --> 00:06:34,160 Speaker 2: of them is Reds over eighty and a half wins. 132 00:06:34,240 --> 00:06:36,520 Speaker 2: I do that every year. That's more heart than head, 133 00:06:36,560 --> 00:06:39,280 Speaker 2: although I do think the Reds are gonna win more 134 00:06:39,320 --> 00:06:39,800 Speaker 2: than eighty and. 135 00:06:39,800 --> 00:06:40,480 Speaker 3: A half games. 136 00:06:41,040 --> 00:06:44,080 Speaker 2: I also to have salth Stewart National League Rookie of 137 00:06:44,080 --> 00:06:46,120 Speaker 2: the Year. It helps that Connor Griffin is not going 138 00:06:46,160 --> 00:06:49,760 Speaker 2: to start the big league season with the Pirates. Didn't 139 00:06:49,800 --> 00:06:52,000 Speaker 2: have a very good spring. He'll be up here soon. 140 00:06:52,720 --> 00:06:55,599 Speaker 2: Everybody loves him. He's been the odds on favorite all along. 141 00:06:56,120 --> 00:06:58,960 Speaker 2: I get salth Stewart hitting at least for a chunk 142 00:06:59,000 --> 00:07:02,080 Speaker 2: of the season, but between Ellie and a Euhaneus Jairez 143 00:07:02,200 --> 00:07:05,960 Speaker 2: in a hit or friendly ballpark, when he's done enough 144 00:07:06,480 --> 00:07:08,800 Speaker 2: to make me feel like I'm not gonna doubt him now. 145 00:07:08,839 --> 00:07:11,000 Speaker 2: He may have a very good year and still not 146 00:07:11,040 --> 00:07:12,600 Speaker 2: be National League Rookie of the Year. 147 00:07:12,920 --> 00:07:15,320 Speaker 3: But I cannot wait. I cannot wait. 148 00:07:15,360 --> 00:07:16,960 Speaker 2: If you're a Reds fan, you've got to agree with 149 00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:19,560 Speaker 2: me to see what Zadle Stewart can do in his 150 00:07:19,600 --> 00:07:23,720 Speaker 2: first full big league season. It's also extraordinarily intriguing to 151 00:07:23,800 --> 00:07:27,440 Speaker 2: see what from Matt McClain's spring carries over to the 152 00:07:27,480 --> 00:07:31,360 Speaker 2: games that count. Now, his statistics were otherworldly. He's not 153 00:07:31,440 --> 00:07:33,720 Speaker 2: going to bat five hundred this spring. If he does, 154 00:07:33,800 --> 00:07:36,760 Speaker 2: he'll set all sorts of records. But you can take 155 00:07:36,800 --> 00:07:38,520 Speaker 2: spring results with a grain of salt. 156 00:07:38,520 --> 00:07:40,040 Speaker 3: We all should. You can take him. 157 00:07:39,880 --> 00:07:42,200 Speaker 2: With larger grains of salt when you're a player coming 158 00:07:42,200 --> 00:07:45,239 Speaker 2: off a disappointing season, and that's fair for Matt McClain. 159 00:07:45,720 --> 00:07:49,360 Speaker 2: But he was so good and so productive and so 160 00:07:49,600 --> 00:07:53,520 Speaker 2: consistent and so different with his approach. He's such an. 161 00:07:53,440 --> 00:07:54,679 Speaker 3: Important part of this team. 162 00:07:55,560 --> 00:07:58,320 Speaker 2: If if the Reds get a very good season for 163 00:07:58,400 --> 00:08:02,200 Speaker 2: Matt McClain and a season we hope for from sal Stewart. 164 00:08:02,640 --> 00:08:05,760 Speaker 2: Plus oh, they added a guy who hit forty nine 165 00:08:05,760 --> 00:08:09,040 Speaker 2: home runs last year and Ellie Dela Cruz is healthy. 166 00:08:09,680 --> 00:08:11,880 Speaker 3: Those are just gonna be your two through five guys. 167 00:08:12,480 --> 00:08:17,360 Speaker 2: That's that sets up for an offense to be better 168 00:08:17,480 --> 00:08:20,640 Speaker 2: than last year. Now, I stopped short of saying significantly, 169 00:08:21,120 --> 00:08:23,240 Speaker 2: because I really do want to see how they manufacture 170 00:08:23,320 --> 00:08:26,200 Speaker 2: runs this season. They've leaned in the home runs a 171 00:08:26,240 --> 00:08:28,720 Speaker 2: little bit more. Do they lean a little bit more 172 00:08:28,720 --> 00:08:31,320 Speaker 2: into the running game and being aggressive. Ellie's health and 173 00:08:31,440 --> 00:08:33,840 Speaker 2: availability is going to have a lot to do with that, 174 00:08:34,040 --> 00:08:37,200 Speaker 2: But I'll start there. I think if you want to 175 00:08:37,200 --> 00:08:39,840 Speaker 2: look at things through rose colored glasses at the outset 176 00:08:39,880 --> 00:08:43,760 Speaker 2: of the season, let's talk about the possible carryover. Matt 177 00:08:43,840 --> 00:08:47,440 Speaker 2: McClain from spring to the game's the count. Same for 178 00:08:47,520 --> 00:08:52,240 Speaker 2: Sal Stewart. Also, like I think Noel de Marte is 179 00:08:52,280 --> 00:08:54,960 Speaker 2: interesting because it's his first full season in right field, 180 00:08:55,360 --> 00:08:59,600 Speaker 2: We've seen some good but also like JJ Blede had 181 00:08:59,600 --> 00:09:05,440 Speaker 2: an awesome some spring, Reese Hines had an unbelievable spring, 182 00:09:06,160 --> 00:09:09,760 Speaker 2: neither guy made the team. This might be the deepest 183 00:09:09,760 --> 00:09:11,680 Speaker 2: team the Reds have had in a while. It might 184 00:09:11,720 --> 00:09:13,560 Speaker 2: be the best the Reds have been at the bottom 185 00:09:13,600 --> 00:09:16,360 Speaker 2: of the depth chart in a while. It also means 186 00:09:16,360 --> 00:09:19,960 Speaker 2: that there shouldn't be very long leashes for guys who underperform. 187 00:09:20,440 --> 00:09:23,760 Speaker 2: I'm not saying that noelve Marte is gonna underperform necessarily, 188 00:09:23,800 --> 00:09:26,840 Speaker 2: but if he does, it feels like they have legitimate options. 189 00:09:27,160 --> 00:09:31,000 Speaker 2: That hasn't always been the case in recent years. Fourteen 190 00:09:31,040 --> 00:09:33,600 Speaker 2: minutes after three o'clock on moegar, you could send me 191 00:09:33,600 --> 00:09:37,000 Speaker 2: a tweet at moegar thanks to Delta Dental. At one 217 00:11:08,720 --> 00:11:11,640 Speaker 2: o'clock today, the University of Cincinnati held a press conference 218 00:11:11,800 --> 00:11:15,760 Speaker 2: introducing Jared Calhoun as the new men's basketball head coach. 219 00:11:16,400 --> 00:11:16,959 Speaker 3: After his. 220 00:11:18,720 --> 00:11:23,480 Speaker 2: Media availability, had a chance to pull him aside and 221 00:11:23,840 --> 00:11:26,160 Speaker 2: talk with the new head coach of the Bearcats. Here 222 00:11:26,280 --> 00:11:30,480 Speaker 2: is that conversation from earlier this afternoon, less than seventy 223 00:11:30,480 --> 00:11:33,280 Speaker 2: two hours ago. I'm watching you stand on a sideline 224 00:11:33,280 --> 00:11:36,080 Speaker 2: in San Diego. You play a great game against Arizona, 225 00:11:36,200 --> 00:11:38,520 Speaker 2: and I'm watching it with renewed interest because you know, 226 00:11:38,600 --> 00:11:41,959 Speaker 2: everybody's talking about Jared Calhoun coming to Cincinnati. I just 227 00:11:42,040 --> 00:11:44,120 Speaker 2: want to know, from then to now, what have these 228 00:11:44,240 --> 00:11:45,840 Speaker 2: less than seventy two hours been like. 229 00:11:46,280 --> 00:11:47,960 Speaker 4: Well, first of all, thanks for having me on. I 230 00:11:48,000 --> 00:11:50,880 Speaker 4: really appreciate it. You know, it's just been a world 231 00:11:50,960 --> 00:11:53,280 Speaker 4: wind of emotions. You know, you put your heart and 232 00:11:53,280 --> 00:11:57,520 Speaker 4: soul into a university. We had great relationships with our players, 233 00:11:57,800 --> 00:12:02,400 Speaker 4: and it was very, very tough delivering the news to 234 00:12:02,559 --> 00:12:04,600 Speaker 4: my guys, you know, and to the fans and the 235 00:12:04,600 --> 00:12:07,920 Speaker 4: supporters at Utah State. You know, everything happens so fast 236 00:12:08,320 --> 00:12:10,520 Speaker 4: in today's coaching. 237 00:12:10,520 --> 00:12:14,319 Speaker 5: You know world. But you know, it's my alma mater. 238 00:12:14,679 --> 00:12:18,400 Speaker 4: You know, it's Cincinnati, It's it's it's my dream job, 239 00:12:18,679 --> 00:12:18,880 Speaker 4: you know. 240 00:12:19,160 --> 00:12:19,800 Speaker 6: So it's. 241 00:12:21,320 --> 00:12:24,360 Speaker 4: It's I could talk about it for days of what 242 00:12:24,480 --> 00:12:27,000 Speaker 4: this place means to me, but I need to show 243 00:12:27,040 --> 00:12:30,040 Speaker 4: the people what we're capable of and I need to 244 00:12:30,040 --> 00:12:30,679 Speaker 4: get to work. 245 00:12:31,200 --> 00:12:32,439 Speaker 5: But it's been crazy. 246 00:12:32,920 --> 00:12:36,360 Speaker 2: The great thing about this program, following it for decades, 247 00:12:37,040 --> 00:12:40,040 Speaker 2: it's the Bearcat basketball family. So you get a head 248 00:12:40,040 --> 00:12:44,160 Speaker 2: coaching job, it's cool. It's got to be completely different 249 00:12:44,559 --> 00:12:47,040 Speaker 2: and so much more special when you get a job 250 00:12:47,040 --> 00:12:50,080 Speaker 2: at a place where you're considered one of us, part 251 00:12:50,080 --> 00:12:50,600 Speaker 2: of the family. 252 00:12:51,040 --> 00:12:53,320 Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's the best way to put it. 253 00:12:53,360 --> 00:12:54,120 Speaker 5: I agree. 254 00:12:54,160 --> 00:12:58,760 Speaker 4: I think Cincinnati is the best city in the state 255 00:12:58,800 --> 00:13:03,920 Speaker 4: of Ohio. It is just a tremendous city. The suburbs, 256 00:13:04,120 --> 00:13:08,240 Speaker 4: the downtown area, the campus. We have so many things 257 00:13:08,280 --> 00:13:13,160 Speaker 4: here to offer to these student athletes. It's my wife 258 00:13:13,160 --> 00:13:15,679 Speaker 4: has never been here. She's overwhelmed how nice it is. 259 00:13:15,760 --> 00:13:20,640 Speaker 4: And I totally agree with you. It's it's an incredible place. 260 00:13:21,200 --> 00:13:23,679 Speaker 2: You mentioned earlier, you have like a thousand things on 261 00:13:23,679 --> 00:13:26,160 Speaker 2: your to do list. Walk me through, like what these 262 00:13:26,200 --> 00:13:28,160 Speaker 2: first few days are going to be Like, Yeah, that's 263 00:13:28,200 --> 00:13:28,880 Speaker 2: a great question. 264 00:13:29,240 --> 00:13:31,559 Speaker 4: We have a whole checklist of things that got to 265 00:13:31,600 --> 00:13:33,360 Speaker 4: be handled really really fast. 266 00:13:33,400 --> 00:13:34,719 Speaker 5: The first thing I want to do is meet with 267 00:13:34,760 --> 00:13:35,280 Speaker 5: the players. 268 00:13:35,679 --> 00:13:38,679 Speaker 4: I think you know, anytime you walk into a situation 269 00:13:38,880 --> 00:13:42,840 Speaker 4: there's kids on rosters. I truly believe this that a 270 00:13:42,920 --> 00:13:45,960 Speaker 4: different voice right or a different place can really really 271 00:13:46,000 --> 00:13:47,959 Speaker 4: help them. So I want to meet with every guy. 272 00:13:47,960 --> 00:13:49,319 Speaker 4: I want to get them on the court. I want 273 00:13:49,360 --> 00:13:50,880 Speaker 4: to start working them out. I want to show them 274 00:13:50,960 --> 00:13:53,360 Speaker 4: the things we do to kind of train players eyes 275 00:13:53,440 --> 00:13:56,800 Speaker 4: and you know, different things that we do. The next 276 00:13:56,880 --> 00:13:59,360 Speaker 4: thing we will do is our schedule. I think recruiting 277 00:13:59,360 --> 00:14:02,880 Speaker 4: and scheduling is critical. We will also have a lot 278 00:14:02,880 --> 00:14:05,480 Speaker 4: of donor meetings because obviously the REV share in the 279 00:14:05,559 --> 00:14:07,800 Speaker 4: NIL is at the center of everything. 280 00:14:09,080 --> 00:14:10,640 Speaker 5: Those are the three biggest things. 281 00:14:10,640 --> 00:14:13,680 Speaker 4: I would say the fourth probably would be, you know, 282 00:14:13,800 --> 00:14:15,480 Speaker 4: try to finish up the staff. 283 00:14:15,559 --> 00:14:16,120 Speaker 5: You know, we've got to. 284 00:14:16,080 --> 00:14:20,280 Speaker 4: Get the staff finalize, get these guys here and you know, 285 00:14:20,320 --> 00:14:23,200 Speaker 4: and then you know, start evaluating tape. I mean you 286 00:14:23,320 --> 00:14:24,960 Speaker 4: got to get into the tape and you got to 287 00:14:25,000 --> 00:14:28,160 Speaker 4: watch the film and right now, I think the biggest 288 00:14:28,200 --> 00:14:31,080 Speaker 4: misses are earlier late in the portal. The prices are 289 00:14:31,120 --> 00:14:33,680 Speaker 4: really high early and they're really high late. I think 290 00:14:33,680 --> 00:14:36,120 Speaker 4: you got to come somewhere in between. You mentioned getting 291 00:14:36,160 --> 00:14:37,520 Speaker 4: on the court. I think there's a lot of people 292 00:14:37,520 --> 00:14:40,040 Speaker 4: who don't realize you could do that. So, oh yeah, 293 00:14:40,600 --> 00:14:41,560 Speaker 4: that's to me. 294 00:14:41,600 --> 00:14:44,040 Speaker 2: You talk about evaluation, get a chance to see guys 295 00:14:44,240 --> 00:14:44,920 Speaker 2: right up close. 296 00:14:45,040 --> 00:14:46,680 Speaker 6: What are you allowed to do with guys on the 297 00:14:46,680 --> 00:14:47,320 Speaker 6: floor right now? 298 00:14:47,400 --> 00:14:49,400 Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean we can. We'll work out tomorrow. 299 00:14:49,440 --> 00:14:52,400 Speaker 4: We'll probably go forty five minutes skill probably no defense, 300 00:14:52,440 --> 00:14:56,040 Speaker 4: all offense, just teach them kind of our system. Spacing, shooting, catching, 301 00:14:56,080 --> 00:14:59,200 Speaker 4: all the things we do. So yeah, I'm excited about it. 302 00:14:59,200 --> 00:15:01,600 Speaker 4: I want to see number one who wants to be here, 303 00:15:01,960 --> 00:15:03,320 Speaker 4: what it means. You know, what does it mean to 304 00:15:03,320 --> 00:15:04,520 Speaker 4: wear Cincinnati uniform? 305 00:15:04,640 --> 00:15:04,800 Speaker 7: Right? 306 00:15:04,880 --> 00:15:07,120 Speaker 4: Like, to me, that's how you're going to win if 307 00:15:07,160 --> 00:15:10,760 Speaker 4: you just get guys that want paydays, right, you have 308 00:15:10,840 --> 00:15:13,720 Speaker 4: to have a little bit of everything right with the players. 309 00:15:13,760 --> 00:15:16,680 Speaker 5: So I can't wait to get out there with him. 310 00:15:17,160 --> 00:15:18,200 Speaker 5: You mentioned the staff. 311 00:15:18,320 --> 00:15:22,400 Speaker 2: You have a GM, Corey Evans who is back from 312 00:15:22,440 --> 00:15:25,960 Speaker 2: this past season. Walk me through developing a hands on 313 00:15:26,120 --> 00:15:28,440 Speaker 2: working relationship with him. That's going to have to develop 314 00:15:28,520 --> 00:15:28,960 Speaker 2: very quickly. 315 00:15:29,040 --> 00:15:30,400 Speaker 5: Yeah, it's going to get expedited. 316 00:15:31,080 --> 00:15:31,240 Speaker 7: You know. 317 00:15:31,360 --> 00:15:34,040 Speaker 4: Just my early conversations with him, he kind of sees 318 00:15:34,080 --> 00:15:37,080 Speaker 4: the game the way I see is from an offensive standpoint. 319 00:15:37,600 --> 00:15:38,600 Speaker 5: He's been in the league. 320 00:15:39,080 --> 00:15:39,240 Speaker 7: You know. 321 00:15:39,320 --> 00:15:41,880 Speaker 4: I think one thing about Cincinnati last year, they had 322 00:15:42,200 --> 00:15:44,960 Speaker 4: a great amount of size, right like they went into 323 00:15:45,000 --> 00:15:47,400 Speaker 4: the portal and I thought Wes did a tremendous job 324 00:15:47,840 --> 00:15:52,479 Speaker 4: of just getting athletes and size. So he's very familiar 325 00:15:52,520 --> 00:15:53,200 Speaker 4: with the league. 326 00:15:54,080 --> 00:15:57,120 Speaker 2: Bob Huggins was here today, which I'm sure was incredibly 327 00:15:57,160 --> 00:16:00,320 Speaker 2: meaningful for you, and I know is incredibly meaningful for 328 00:16:01,000 --> 00:16:04,000 Speaker 2: people who love this program. Go back to that two 329 00:16:04,040 --> 00:16:05,800 Speaker 2: thousand and three, two thousand and four, a year I 330 00:16:05,880 --> 00:16:07,080 Speaker 2: knew there were I know there are a lot of 331 00:16:07,120 --> 00:16:10,200 Speaker 2: things you picked up from him working for him at 332 00:16:10,200 --> 00:16:12,920 Speaker 2: West Virginia. But what sort of things did you grab 333 00:16:12,960 --> 00:16:14,760 Speaker 2: onto as a young guy that you were here as 334 00:16:14,800 --> 00:16:15,520 Speaker 2: a student assistant. 335 00:16:15,800 --> 00:16:16,040 Speaker 5: Yeah. 336 00:16:16,080 --> 00:16:19,000 Speaker 4: I think number one is command of the room. I 337 00:16:19,000 --> 00:16:21,760 Speaker 4: think anytime you walk into a room, whether it's donors, 338 00:16:21,800 --> 00:16:25,280 Speaker 4: whether it's a student's, you know, student body, whether it's 339 00:16:25,280 --> 00:16:28,880 Speaker 4: your players in a team meeting, I thought he demanded 340 00:16:29,120 --> 00:16:32,440 Speaker 4: the room. I think that's you know, Coach Huggins had 341 00:16:32,440 --> 00:16:35,560 Speaker 4: an aura about him that's I really admire that. I 342 00:16:35,600 --> 00:16:39,080 Speaker 4: thought his messaging was really good most of the time 343 00:16:39,120 --> 00:16:39,720 Speaker 4: with the team. 344 00:16:39,920 --> 00:16:41,600 Speaker 5: You know, sometimes not so good. 345 00:16:41,640 --> 00:16:45,400 Speaker 4: But listen, the guy could motivate a group of people 346 00:16:46,440 --> 00:16:50,560 Speaker 4: as good as I've ever seen. His practices were very detailed. 347 00:16:50,600 --> 00:16:53,400 Speaker 4: Everything was to a tea and then he empowered his 348 00:16:53,480 --> 00:16:56,320 Speaker 4: assistants to go out and perform and have an ownership 349 00:16:57,200 --> 00:16:59,640 Speaker 4: of that particular thing that he wanted you to do. 350 00:17:00,880 --> 00:17:04,000 Speaker 4: So to have him here today, you know, he's been 351 00:17:04,080 --> 00:17:07,520 Speaker 4: in and out of the program over some time, you know, 352 00:17:07,640 --> 00:17:11,359 Speaker 4: I think listen, you know, life's very short. You know, 353 00:17:11,440 --> 00:17:13,720 Speaker 4: that was part of the big reason coming back. You know, 354 00:17:13,960 --> 00:17:16,879 Speaker 4: like life short, it goes by really quick. Things happen, 355 00:17:17,400 --> 00:17:18,760 Speaker 4: and we got to get him back. 356 00:17:18,840 --> 00:17:21,119 Speaker 2: You know, around the program, Bearcat fans love to go 357 00:17:21,200 --> 00:17:23,520 Speaker 2: down memory lane. So that year, oh three oh four, 358 00:17:23,600 --> 00:17:25,840 Speaker 2: I think of the shot bob It hits and Columbus 359 00:17:25,840 --> 00:17:28,840 Speaker 2: to advance to the second round of the tournament. What 360 00:17:28,960 --> 00:17:31,560 Speaker 2: memory stands out above and beyond any from that season. 361 00:17:32,240 --> 00:17:34,760 Speaker 5: You know, we had four NBA guys on that tea. 362 00:17:34,880 --> 00:17:37,320 Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I can remember Huggs tell me, hey, 363 00:17:37,359 --> 00:17:38,800 Speaker 4: if you ever get ahead job, you got to get 364 00:17:38,800 --> 00:17:40,480 Speaker 4: some players. And I said, well, Huggs, we have four 365 00:17:40,560 --> 00:17:44,359 Speaker 4: NBA players right here. So you know, just I just 366 00:17:44,400 --> 00:17:47,359 Speaker 4: think the camaraderie of that group, the toughness, you know, 367 00:17:47,520 --> 00:17:51,680 Speaker 4: Eric Kicks played so hard, James White with his versatility. 368 00:17:52,920 --> 00:17:55,600 Speaker 4: You know, But all these Cincinnati teams I've watched over 369 00:17:55,600 --> 00:17:59,760 Speaker 4: the years, probably the most tragic, you know, was was Kenyon. 370 00:18:00,119 --> 00:18:02,720 Speaker 4: You know, I mean, we would have our third national championship. 371 00:18:02,760 --> 00:18:06,679 Speaker 4: I really feel that in my heart. That one crushed me. 372 00:18:07,560 --> 00:18:09,840 Speaker 4: But I just remember all these guys and add one 373 00:18:09,840 --> 00:18:11,760 Speaker 4: thing in common. When they put the uniform on, it 374 00:18:11,800 --> 00:18:14,199 Speaker 4: really meant something to them because you could see how 375 00:18:14,240 --> 00:18:16,720 Speaker 4: hard they played and how much they cared. So I 376 00:18:16,800 --> 00:18:19,240 Speaker 4: just respect so many of the former coaches and the players, 377 00:18:19,280 --> 00:18:22,359 Speaker 4: the managers, and it's just a special place. 378 00:18:22,560 --> 00:18:24,119 Speaker 2: One more because I know you're being pulled on a 379 00:18:24,119 --> 00:18:27,000 Speaker 2: thousand directions. But you know, I think at UC basketball 380 00:18:27,040 --> 00:18:30,800 Speaker 2: and I think everybody listening thinks of culture and identity 381 00:18:31,080 --> 00:18:35,280 Speaker 2: for decades in this era, you will find folks who say, look, 382 00:18:35,280 --> 00:18:38,560 Speaker 2: it's harder to develop and maintain it because there's so 383 00:18:38,640 --> 00:18:39,280 Speaker 2: much turnover. 384 00:18:39,440 --> 00:18:40,240 Speaker 6: So how do you do that? 385 00:18:40,359 --> 00:18:42,439 Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll do it a little different. We'll bring in guys. 386 00:18:43,040 --> 00:18:46,199 Speaker 4: We'll bring more freshmen in probably the most. We'll routine 387 00:18:46,240 --> 00:18:49,360 Speaker 4: those guys and they'll drive home the culture. We'll make 388 00:18:49,400 --> 00:18:52,840 Speaker 4: sure throughout the recruiting process that the fans as they 389 00:18:52,840 --> 00:18:56,440 Speaker 4: meet these people in class and on campus, they're really 390 00:18:56,440 --> 00:18:57,040 Speaker 4: good people. 391 00:18:57,240 --> 00:18:57,439 Speaker 8: You know. 392 00:18:57,560 --> 00:18:59,600 Speaker 4: I think that's the biggest thing that I've learned over 393 00:19:00,320 --> 00:19:03,320 Speaker 4: my time as a coach, that every stop, you know, 394 00:19:03,440 --> 00:19:06,040 Speaker 4: it's about the people. So we want this community to 395 00:19:06,119 --> 00:19:09,040 Speaker 4: be proud of the team. We don't want guys, you know, 396 00:19:09,119 --> 00:19:11,280 Speaker 4: not getting a college degree. I thought, you know, spending 397 00:19:11,320 --> 00:19:14,919 Speaker 4: time with doctor Pinto that that was an incredible conversation 398 00:19:15,040 --> 00:19:15,480 Speaker 4: with him. 399 00:19:15,920 --> 00:19:17,440 Speaker 5: Last year we had the highest GPAT. 400 00:19:17,480 --> 00:19:19,119 Speaker 4: Last two years we had the highest GPA in the 401 00:19:19,160 --> 00:19:23,199 Speaker 4: history of Utah State basketball, not all the sports with basketball, 402 00:19:23,320 --> 00:19:25,040 Speaker 4: and look what we did with the winds. So I 403 00:19:25,040 --> 00:19:27,639 Speaker 4: think it's a correlation of the type of people and 404 00:19:27,840 --> 00:19:30,600 Speaker 4: you know kind of how you're running your program. 405 00:19:31,160 --> 00:19:34,199 Speaker 2: It's cherch Calhoun, the new men's basketball head coach at 406 00:19:34,240 --> 00:19:37,280 Speaker 2: the University of Cincinnati. So 446 00:21:44,880 --> 00:21:48,640 Speaker 7: if you see you see me wandering around Finley Market. 447 00:21:48,640 --> 00:21:50,480 Speaker 12: Good, ready to point me in the right direction of 448 00:21:50,520 --> 00:21:51,639 Speaker 12: all the plays I should go to. 449 00:21:51,760 --> 00:21:52,880 Speaker 11: Because while I've been. 450 00:21:52,800 --> 00:21:55,960 Speaker 12: To Opening Day in Cincinnati before, I have never actually 451 00:21:56,000 --> 00:21:59,560 Speaker 12: done the fallow experience of walking the parade. So my 452 00:21:59,640 --> 00:22:03,280 Speaker 12: grand plan is get up early, do my mv's Central 453 00:22:03,359 --> 00:22:05,600 Speaker 12: hit early, and then walk over to the parade and 454 00:22:05,680 --> 00:22:06,400 Speaker 12: then come back. 455 00:22:06,480 --> 00:22:09,600 Speaker 7: That's my plan. So if you see me wandering around. 456 00:22:09,320 --> 00:22:12,200 Speaker 11: All the great the Cincinnti natives right there. 457 00:22:12,200 --> 00:22:14,480 Speaker 12: Feel afraid to help me out and navigate. So I'm 458 00:22:14,520 --> 00:22:16,879 Speaker 12: going to the right places I'm supposed to go to tomorrow. 459 00:22:17,400 --> 00:22:19,320 Speaker 2: All right, Well, if you say a lot of nice 460 00:22:19,359 --> 00:22:22,200 Speaker 2: things about the Reds today, that'll ensure that nobody heckles 461 00:22:22,240 --> 00:22:23,240 Speaker 2: you as you're walking around. 462 00:22:23,320 --> 00:22:26,919 Speaker 7: Okay, all right, sounds good. I'm all set with the 463 00:22:26,920 --> 00:22:27,880 Speaker 7: optimism right now. 464 00:22:28,400 --> 00:22:29,240 Speaker 3: All right, let's do it. 465 00:22:29,280 --> 00:22:31,399 Speaker 2: What's the most interesting thing about this club as the 466 00:22:31,400 --> 00:22:32,119 Speaker 2: season starts. 467 00:22:34,119 --> 00:22:37,400 Speaker 12: I think how sal Stuart is going to be utilized, 468 00:22:37,400 --> 00:22:39,479 Speaker 12: and I really I thought it was interesting to hear 469 00:22:39,600 --> 00:22:43,000 Speaker 12: Terry Francona's ideas, and Mark Shulder won a great piece 470 00:22:43,000 --> 00:22:46,240 Speaker 12: about this at MLB dot Com about how potentially you'll 471 00:22:46,280 --> 00:22:50,080 Speaker 12: see Stuart in between Ellie and Swatted. I think Stuart 472 00:22:50,119 --> 00:22:52,240 Speaker 12: is someone that we caught glimpses of him last year 473 00:22:52,280 --> 00:22:52,919 Speaker 12: down the stretch. 474 00:22:54,040 --> 00:22:55,000 Speaker 7: I am a big. 475 00:22:54,760 --> 00:22:56,040 Speaker 8: Believer in Stuart. 476 00:22:56,040 --> 00:22:58,480 Speaker 12: I think he's got a chance to be a star 477 00:22:58,760 --> 00:23:01,040 Speaker 12: in for this lineup for years to come. 478 00:23:01,480 --> 00:23:02,680 Speaker 7: And when you think about. 479 00:23:02,480 --> 00:23:04,560 Speaker 12: The way that he can compliment the skill sets of 480 00:23:04,600 --> 00:23:07,440 Speaker 12: Eli Da La Cruz, there's a lot to like about 481 00:23:07,440 --> 00:23:09,959 Speaker 12: what this could mean for the middle part of Cincinnati's lineup. 482 00:23:10,200 --> 00:23:13,240 Speaker 12: I also think having McLain back and healthy and in 483 00:23:13,359 --> 00:23:15,880 Speaker 12: the spring of the ad and obviously we don't always 484 00:23:15,880 --> 00:23:18,240 Speaker 12: know that the numbers translating. Certainly, he's been hitting at 485 00:23:18,400 --> 00:23:21,440 Speaker 12: this extraordinary level that's very hard. 486 00:23:21,240 --> 00:23:24,640 Speaker 7: To duplicate in the regular season. But he looks healthy, 487 00:23:25,160 --> 00:23:25,840 Speaker 7: he looks. 488 00:23:25,600 --> 00:23:29,440 Speaker 12: Comfortable again, this is the lineup that I believe will hit. 489 00:23:29,560 --> 00:23:32,000 Speaker 7: And it's now a question of with some of the 490 00:23:32,040 --> 00:23:33,120 Speaker 7: injuries pitching. 491 00:23:32,840 --> 00:23:35,760 Speaker 12: Wise, how they were able to navigate the early part 492 00:23:35,760 --> 00:23:38,359 Speaker 12: of the season. But you think about Swats coming back, 493 00:23:38,480 --> 00:23:41,560 Speaker 12: a full year of Stuart, a healthy McClain, I think 494 00:23:41,560 --> 00:23:44,359 Speaker 12: it's gonna be a fun lineup to watch work this season. 495 00:23:45,359 --> 00:23:46,920 Speaker 3: You speaking my language. 496 00:23:46,920 --> 00:23:49,320 Speaker 2: If I can get the Matt McClain just from his 497 00:23:49,440 --> 00:23:51,920 Speaker 2: rookie season in the two hole, and I can get 498 00:23:52,119 --> 00:23:55,000 Speaker 2: what I look south Stewart has passed every test they 499 00:23:55,119 --> 00:23:57,280 Speaker 2: put in front of him. If I can get what 500 00:23:57,359 --> 00:23:59,399 Speaker 2: I think they can get from him in the four spot, 501 00:24:00,920 --> 00:24:02,760 Speaker 2: has a chance to be really good. What would be 502 00:24:02,800 --> 00:24:05,520 Speaker 2: your biggest question or maybe even reservation about this club? 503 00:24:07,240 --> 00:24:07,880 Speaker 7: The rotation? 504 00:24:08,240 --> 00:24:11,240 Speaker 12: And I think that's that's probably it's an easy answer, 505 00:24:11,240 --> 00:24:14,199 Speaker 12: but I think it's the correct one, just based on 506 00:24:14,400 --> 00:24:17,280 Speaker 12: the blisters. Of course, Lodolo the news in the last 507 00:24:17,280 --> 00:24:20,080 Speaker 12: twenty four hours about him landing on the injured list, 508 00:24:20,080 --> 00:24:22,080 Speaker 12: obviously Hunter Green being on the IL. 509 00:24:21,840 --> 00:24:24,119 Speaker 7: Two that's just a big question. 510 00:24:24,240 --> 00:24:27,520 Speaker 12: I think for Abbott tomorrow, he's got to set the 511 00:24:27,560 --> 00:24:31,199 Speaker 12: tone that, at least for the next four to six weeks, 512 00:24:31,440 --> 00:24:32,199 Speaker 12: as they're waiting me. 513 00:24:32,320 --> 00:24:34,320 Speaker 7: For somewhere to get back up and to be at 514 00:24:34,359 --> 00:24:35,000 Speaker 7: full strength. 515 00:24:35,280 --> 00:24:37,440 Speaker 11: They're going to have to be created with this group. 516 00:24:37,520 --> 00:24:40,919 Speaker 12: And interesting that Abbot's the first lefty to start an 517 00:24:40,960 --> 00:24:44,679 Speaker 12: opening day for the Reds since Mike Remlinger. 518 00:24:44,280 --> 00:24:46,879 Speaker 11: Back in the later years of Riverfront. 519 00:24:46,920 --> 00:24:48,320 Speaker 8: So this is going back a while. 520 00:24:48,800 --> 00:24:51,199 Speaker 12: I was thinking to myself as I saw that the 521 00:24:51,240 --> 00:24:54,200 Speaker 12: news come across Abbit, Okay, lefty, what was the last lefty? 522 00:24:54,240 --> 00:24:57,480 Speaker 12: And I kept thinking, going back, Okay, obviously. 523 00:24:57,480 --> 00:25:00,480 Speaker 7: Rang Arriety, Homer, baili Ariety. I was going, Balka is 524 00:25:00,520 --> 00:25:01,680 Speaker 7: a writing quite Alrighty. 525 00:25:01,680 --> 00:25:04,359 Speaker 12: I was thinking back all those years and Darnaa was 526 00:25:04,400 --> 00:25:08,160 Speaker 12: way back in the late nineties, so a different era certainly. 527 00:25:08,200 --> 00:25:10,560 Speaker 12: But it was funny because actually I shared that that 528 00:25:10,640 --> 00:25:13,440 Speaker 12: note with Sean Casey and Aaron Bonnet and listen to 529 00:25:13,480 --> 00:25:14,639 Speaker 12: this guys that's been since. 530 00:25:14,560 --> 00:25:16,880 Speaker 7: Remblinger, so that they were they were. 531 00:25:16,840 --> 00:25:19,520 Speaker 11: Following that news as I was sharing it the other day. 532 00:25:19,560 --> 00:25:21,720 Speaker 12: But I really think in a lot of ways, Mo, 533 00:25:21,880 --> 00:25:25,000 Speaker 12: it is the rotation they're gonna have to surprise on 534 00:25:25,080 --> 00:25:28,639 Speaker 12: the positive end for this team to stay in this 535 00:25:28,880 --> 00:25:29,920 Speaker 12: NL Central race. 536 00:25:29,960 --> 00:25:30,600 Speaker 7: Early on in the. 537 00:25:30,640 --> 00:25:34,479 Speaker 2: Year, well, Mike Rombliner started that game, and I remember 538 00:25:34,480 --> 00:25:36,760 Speaker 2: it well because I was in college and Pokey Reese 539 00:25:36,800 --> 00:25:39,119 Speaker 2: made four errors and they lost ten to two, So 540 00:25:39,160 --> 00:25:42,719 Speaker 2: I need a different result now, speaking of short stops 541 00:25:42,760 --> 00:25:44,760 Speaker 2: making errors, here's what's interesting to me. You and I 542 00:25:44,800 --> 00:25:46,680 Speaker 2: have talked about the Reds for five minutes and we've 543 00:25:46,760 --> 00:25:48,399 Speaker 2: I don't even think we've mentioned the name Elie de 544 00:25:48,520 --> 00:25:49,000 Speaker 2: la Cruz. 545 00:25:49,040 --> 00:25:54,440 Speaker 12: That's good, right, He's unreal, And I just think that 546 00:25:54,600 --> 00:25:56,639 Speaker 12: when you talk about some of the brightest stars in 547 00:25:56,680 --> 00:26:00,080 Speaker 12: the game, what he's able to do and and one 548 00:25:59,880 --> 00:26:03,280 Speaker 12: of my favorite big picture points is this, when you 549 00:26:03,359 --> 00:26:07,480 Speaker 12: discuss people that have a chance to be stars in 550 00:26:07,480 --> 00:26:11,600 Speaker 12: this game and face of baseball, the biggest question I often. 551 00:26:11,359 --> 00:26:14,560 Speaker 8: Have is how durable are they? 552 00:26:14,800 --> 00:26:15,720 Speaker 7: Can they stand up. 553 00:26:15,600 --> 00:26:18,400 Speaker 12: To the demands of this profession and be out there 554 00:26:18,400 --> 00:26:20,359 Speaker 12: every day? And I think one of the things that 555 00:26:20,440 --> 00:26:22,840 Speaker 12: impressed me the most about Elie is just how available 556 00:26:22,880 --> 00:26:26,280 Speaker 12: he is and how consistent he is, how dependable he is, 557 00:26:26,400 --> 00:26:28,600 Speaker 12: and he's someone that I think we haven't even seen 558 00:26:28,640 --> 00:26:31,280 Speaker 12: the best of him yet, and there's a lot of 559 00:26:31,320 --> 00:26:34,200 Speaker 12: great baseball still to come for Alie de la Cruz. 560 00:26:34,280 --> 00:26:37,320 Speaker 12: So I'm thrilled about what his future looks like. I 561 00:26:37,320 --> 00:26:39,360 Speaker 12: think the Reds know how important he is to their 562 00:26:39,400 --> 00:26:43,120 Speaker 12: long term success, and when you consider the waves, they're 563 00:26:43,119 --> 00:26:46,399 Speaker 12: going to have to be I think adaptive and looking 564 00:26:46,440 --> 00:26:48,160 Speaker 12: to ways to make sure he stays in the fold 565 00:26:48,240 --> 00:26:51,720 Speaker 12: financially for many, many years to come. Obviously, they pursue 566 00:26:51,760 --> 00:26:55,399 Speaker 12: Schwarber in the course of the offseason, so they're thinking 567 00:26:55,440 --> 00:26:56,320 Speaker 12: about those. 568 00:26:56,119 --> 00:26:57,680 Speaker 7: Those superstar type players. 569 00:26:58,359 --> 00:27:02,880 Speaker 12: Ellie is the face of the franchise period until something else, 570 00:27:04,040 --> 00:27:04,879 Speaker 12: something else changes, what. 571 00:27:04,960 --> 00:27:06,560 Speaker 7: I don't expect is gonna happen anytime soon. 572 00:27:06,760 --> 00:27:09,760 Speaker 12: He is the guy that everything revolves around, and so 573 00:27:09,840 --> 00:27:12,840 Speaker 12: I think making sure that he's healthy, dependable, reliable and 574 00:27:12,920 --> 00:27:15,520 Speaker 12: a long term part of the organization I think has 575 00:27:15,560 --> 00:27:17,600 Speaker 12: to be that the biggest priority for this team now 576 00:27:17,640 --> 00:27:18,160 Speaker 12: going forward. 577 00:27:18,760 --> 00:27:24,520 Speaker 2: John Morossi, MLB Network, appearing from GABP on MLB Network tomorrow, 578 00:27:25,119 --> 00:27:27,600 Speaker 2: give me an up and down snapshot of the National 579 00:27:27,680 --> 00:27:28,560 Speaker 2: League Central. 580 00:27:30,440 --> 00:27:34,480 Speaker 12: Clubs I believe are the favorites coming in. I think 581 00:27:34,520 --> 00:27:38,399 Speaker 12: that the Bregman signing addressed a weakness they had a 582 00:27:38,480 --> 00:27:42,080 Speaker 12: year ago, so that's a really big move for them. Cabrera, 583 00:27:42,160 --> 00:27:45,280 Speaker 12: I've always felt is a bit of an underrated arm 584 00:27:45,320 --> 00:27:47,160 Speaker 12: I think that was a big move for them. 585 00:27:47,600 --> 00:27:49,440 Speaker 8: The Brewers might be. 586 00:27:49,600 --> 00:27:52,240 Speaker 11: And we keep saying this every year, they might be 587 00:27:52,560 --> 00:27:53,280 Speaker 11: in a. 588 00:27:53,200 --> 00:27:56,240 Speaker 12: Spot where they eventually take a step back, although man, 589 00:27:56,280 --> 00:27:57,879 Speaker 12: it seems like they never really quite do. 590 00:27:58,040 --> 00:27:59,560 Speaker 7: And I think the world of. 591 00:27:59,560 --> 00:28:01,480 Speaker 11: Pat merv He as an excellent manager. 592 00:28:01,560 --> 00:28:03,720 Speaker 12: So I think for a lot of those reasons, the 593 00:28:04,320 --> 00:28:06,200 Speaker 12: Brewers are still right there in the thick of it. 594 00:28:06,520 --> 00:28:09,320 Speaker 12: But I really like what the Cubs have done with 595 00:28:09,359 --> 00:28:11,760 Speaker 12: their club over the course of the offseason. 596 00:28:11,760 --> 00:28:12,840 Speaker 7: Bregman is the kind of. 597 00:28:12,800 --> 00:28:16,919 Speaker 12: Player that really makes makes a team better up and 598 00:28:16,960 --> 00:28:19,159 Speaker 12: down the lineup the impact he has on different players. 599 00:28:19,200 --> 00:28:21,600 Speaker 12: So I look at Bregman as being someone that will 600 00:28:21,600 --> 00:28:24,640 Speaker 12: have a tremendous impact on the Cubs lineup, up and down. 601 00:28:25,440 --> 00:28:28,720 Speaker 2: One more before we let you go the World Baseball Classic. 602 00:28:28,840 --> 00:28:32,600 Speaker 2: When when this event first was hatched, I could not 603 00:28:32,640 --> 00:28:35,960 Speaker 2: have been more skeptical. I thought, it's it's glorified spring training. 604 00:28:36,440 --> 00:28:38,160 Speaker 2: There's not going to be a huge buy in from 605 00:28:38,160 --> 00:28:41,760 Speaker 2: the players. And now when you were there, I'm watching 606 00:28:42,320 --> 00:28:45,240 Speaker 2: not just the final, but the entire tournament unfold. 607 00:28:45,640 --> 00:28:46,680 Speaker 3: It's now at the top of my. 608 00:28:46,640 --> 00:28:49,480 Speaker 2: Bucket list, like I gotta go to a World Baseball Classic, 609 00:28:49,800 --> 00:28:52,840 Speaker 2: semi final or final. What's it been like watching that 610 00:28:52,920 --> 00:28:55,280 Speaker 2: event evolve? What was it like covering it this year? 611 00:28:56,720 --> 00:28:56,920 Speaker 13: Oh? 612 00:28:57,080 --> 00:29:00,280 Speaker 12: So many emotions and please do please join us. And then, 613 00:29:00,320 --> 00:29:03,160 Speaker 12: whether it's fears or four years, make sure you're there. 614 00:29:03,440 --> 00:29:07,560 Speaker 7: It is my favorite, whether it's. 615 00:29:07,400 --> 00:29:09,640 Speaker 12: Every third year, every fourth year, event to cover in 616 00:29:09,680 --> 00:29:13,920 Speaker 12: the entire sports universe. I've attended the Olympics before, and 617 00:29:14,000 --> 00:29:16,960 Speaker 12: I felt even more connected to this. It was just 618 00:29:17,040 --> 00:29:21,920 Speaker 12: so beautiful to see that cultural coming together, the way 619 00:29:21,960 --> 00:29:24,440 Speaker 12: that the Venezuela has reacted when they want it, and 620 00:29:24,520 --> 00:29:28,840 Speaker 12: how meaningful was to them you saw Alsie is just 621 00:29:28,920 --> 00:29:33,240 Speaker 12: the emotion all around him, I think said all you 622 00:29:33,280 --> 00:29:35,840 Speaker 12: need to know about it, and just my ears. It 623 00:29:35,880 --> 00:29:39,480 Speaker 12: took him probably four or five days more before they stopped. 624 00:29:39,240 --> 00:29:40,800 Speaker 7: Ringing, And that's okay. 625 00:29:40,840 --> 00:29:45,640 Speaker 12: I'll take that as a occupational cost any day of 626 00:29:45,640 --> 00:29:46,000 Speaker 12: the week. 627 00:29:46,440 --> 00:29:47,800 Speaker 7: Just an amazing experience. 628 00:29:47,840 --> 00:29:50,040 Speaker 12: And I think the biggest lesson that we can take 629 00:29:50,080 --> 00:29:53,680 Speaker 12: away is just how many different ways the game has celebrated, 630 00:29:53,720 --> 00:29:58,080 Speaker 12: whether it's in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, 631 00:29:58,160 --> 00:29:58,960 Speaker 12: all around the world. 632 00:29:59,160 --> 00:30:01,800 Speaker 7: Even now the Italian is getting into it. I think 633 00:30:01,840 --> 00:30:03,120 Speaker 7: it's important for us to. 634 00:30:03,160 --> 00:30:07,040 Speaker 12: All just appreciate the number of different pathways that players 635 00:30:07,080 --> 00:30:09,160 Speaker 12: have to come to this country and play. 636 00:30:08,960 --> 00:30:10,720 Speaker 7: This game that we love so much, and just a 637 00:30:11,000 --> 00:30:13,120 Speaker 7: but what a blessing is to share this, this great 638 00:30:13,160 --> 00:30:13,880 Speaker 7: game with the world. 639 00:30:13,920 --> 00:30:17,960 Speaker 12: So it was just a really emotional and proud moment 640 00:30:18,000 --> 00:30:20,560 Speaker 12: for me to just see what it's become and and 641 00:30:20,680 --> 00:30:21,680 Speaker 12: still moment. 642 00:30:21,440 --> 00:30:23,200 Speaker 8: It has even more room to grow. 643 00:30:23,320 --> 00:30:25,920 Speaker 7: So I just cannot wait for the next edition as well. 644 00:30:26,400 --> 00:30:28,200 Speaker 3: Yeah, was awesome to watch. 645 00:30:28,320 --> 00:30:30,680 Speaker 2: You got to be a part of it, And again 646 00:30:30,880 --> 00:30:33,560 Speaker 2: it's on my bucket list now and I didn't think 647 00:30:33,600 --> 00:30:37,040 Speaker 2: i'd be saying that fifteen years ago. He has 724 00:34:50,800 --> 00:34:53,319 Speaker 2: threatened to sort of take over our show. I'm not 725 00:34:53,360 --> 00:34:56,799 Speaker 2: sure we want that, but we will see. He wants 726 00:34:56,840 --> 00:35:01,680 Speaker 2: me to have that one mailman on who's over there 727 00:35:01,719 --> 00:35:06,200 Speaker 2: broadcasting with him. And when I mentioned this to friends 728 00:35:06,200 --> 00:35:08,360 Speaker 2: of mine, they were like, yeah, I'd kind of like 729 00:35:08,400 --> 00:35:12,200 Speaker 2: to hear that. So I think it's gonna happen. I 730 00:35:12,239 --> 00:35:14,839 Speaker 2: don't know entirely, but first we have to talk with 731 00:35:14,880 --> 00:35:18,080 Speaker 2: Sam Lake here, who's almost as interesting as that one mailman. 732 00:35:18,560 --> 00:35:22,080 Speaker 2: You'll hear from Sam next five away from four o'clock 733 00:35:22,120 --> 00:35:26,000 Speaker 2: here at the Cincinnati Lagger House on ESPN fifteen thirty 734 00:35:26,040 --> 00:35:27,120 Speaker 2: Cincinnati Sports. 735 00:35:26,880 --> 00:35:32,640 Speaker 14: Station SPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station all. 736 00:35:32,600 --> 00:35:36,080 Speaker 2: Right four or four ESPN fifteen thirty Moegger On Opening 737 00:35:36,160 --> 00:35:39,640 Speaker 2: Day Eve, we are broadcasting from the Cincinnati Lagger House. 738 00:35:39,760 --> 00:35:43,000 Speaker 3: First pitch is. 739 00:35:42,239 --> 00:35:45,960 Speaker 2: Twenty four hours and six minutes away. This place will 740 00:35:45,960 --> 00:35:48,040 Speaker 2: be jumping tomorrow. If you're not going to the game, 741 00:35:48,080 --> 00:35:49,680 Speaker 2: you can watch it here with John John. If you 742 00:35:49,719 --> 00:35:51,520 Speaker 2: are going to the game, come by and get something 743 00:35:51,560 --> 00:35:54,520 Speaker 2: to eat, get a cold one before the Reds take 744 00:35:54,560 --> 00:35:57,240 Speaker 2: on the Boston Red Sox. We've done this for years 745 00:35:57,560 --> 00:36:00,359 Speaker 2: on the day before the season starts, and this is 746 00:36:00,400 --> 00:36:02,880 Speaker 2: probably why this is one of my favorite days because 747 00:36:03,360 --> 00:36:06,560 Speaker 2: we chat with our friend Sam Lequierr, who we haven't 748 00:36:06,560 --> 00:36:09,719 Speaker 2: talked to him like nearly six months, and that bothers me. 749 00:36:10,120 --> 00:36:12,319 Speaker 2: It's great to have him with us. My favorite person 750 00:36:12,360 --> 00:36:13,520 Speaker 2: to talk Reds baseball with. 751 00:36:13,880 --> 00:36:14,680 Speaker 3: Sam. How are you? 752 00:36:15,520 --> 00:36:16,160 Speaker 8: I'm good body. 753 00:36:16,320 --> 00:36:19,920 Speaker 15: You know you said six months and I don't like 754 00:36:19,960 --> 00:36:23,120 Speaker 15: it either, But I give you a breather because you 755 00:36:23,239 --> 00:36:26,799 Speaker 15: had me on several times last year, which has not 756 00:36:26,960 --> 00:36:29,520 Speaker 15: been the norm, and I appreciate that. 757 00:36:30,920 --> 00:36:34,000 Speaker 2: I say this every year. I will have you, I 758 00:36:34,040 --> 00:36:36,840 Speaker 2: will have you on every week. I'll have you on 759 00:36:36,960 --> 00:36:39,680 Speaker 2: every day. I just don't want to abuse it. And 760 00:36:39,719 --> 00:36:41,560 Speaker 2: you came on with me. You came on with me 761 00:36:41,840 --> 00:36:44,040 Speaker 2: during the playoff push, you came on with me during 762 00:36:44,040 --> 00:36:48,080 Speaker 2: the postseason. So like, no, I will, I will have 763 00:36:48,120 --> 00:36:49,359 Speaker 2: you on every day if you want. 764 00:36:49,719 --> 00:36:53,479 Speaker 15: Last year, I loved it fun just like the sound 765 00:36:53,520 --> 00:36:54,239 Speaker 15: of playoff push. 766 00:36:54,280 --> 00:36:55,719 Speaker 8: I like the sound of playoffs. 767 00:36:56,440 --> 00:36:56,640 Speaker 3: Yep. 768 00:36:56,680 --> 00:37:00,399 Speaker 8: And hopefully or have similar conversations this year. 769 00:37:01,440 --> 00:37:02,880 Speaker 2: I hope so. But I got to start with this 770 00:37:02,920 --> 00:37:04,960 Speaker 2: when you pitched? How often did you get blisters? 771 00:37:07,480 --> 00:37:10,719 Speaker 8: Jeez? All right, that's where we're gonna start. Okay, I 772 00:37:10,800 --> 00:37:11,239 Speaker 8: had them. 773 00:37:11,480 --> 00:37:13,160 Speaker 15: I mean I had them from time to time. I 774 00:37:13,200 --> 00:37:18,680 Speaker 15: don't remember ever really missing. My dad was a huge 775 00:37:18,719 --> 00:37:22,160 Speaker 15: proponent of soaking your fingers at pickle. 776 00:37:21,960 --> 00:37:25,080 Speaker 11: Juice, and it worked. 777 00:37:25,080 --> 00:37:27,560 Speaker 15: It seemed to work because it did because when I 778 00:37:27,560 --> 00:37:29,719 Speaker 15: would have blisters in college, when I was at the 779 00:37:29,800 --> 00:37:35,000 Speaker 15: University of Texas, super hot, superhumid, that they would happen just. 780 00:37:34,960 --> 00:37:36,880 Speaker 8: Because your fingers softened from the sweat. 781 00:37:37,000 --> 00:37:40,439 Speaker 15: And they used kind of a concoction of I can't 782 00:37:40,480 --> 00:37:43,799 Speaker 15: remember the liquid, but it was alum which is a 783 00:37:43,800 --> 00:37:47,759 Speaker 15: spice that goes in pickles, and they kind of mix 784 00:37:47,840 --> 00:37:51,040 Speaker 15: this together and that would be kind of you know, 785 00:37:51,080 --> 00:37:51,480 Speaker 15: maybe it. 786 00:37:51,440 --> 00:37:54,080 Speaker 8: Was like an iodyne. It looked like that a little bit. 787 00:37:54,280 --> 00:37:56,560 Speaker 15: I don't know exactly what it was, but they'd mix 788 00:37:56,640 --> 00:37:59,000 Speaker 15: that together and it seemed to work. 789 00:37:59,040 --> 00:38:00,480 Speaker 8: I didn't miss too much. 790 00:38:01,040 --> 00:38:05,200 Speaker 15: Uh, talking to mom earlier said man, uh, nyl Doll 791 00:38:05,320 --> 00:38:05,560 Speaker 15: need to. 792 00:38:05,560 --> 00:38:08,880 Speaker 8: Stop doing so many dishes. I think it might be 793 00:38:08,920 --> 00:38:11,160 Speaker 8: one of that. He's just like, he's just a good husband. 794 00:38:11,400 --> 00:38:11,840 Speaker 8: He does it. 795 00:38:11,920 --> 00:38:14,040 Speaker 15: This is a lie and it's oftens his finger up 796 00:38:14,400 --> 00:38:16,239 Speaker 15: and he needs to get over that for a little bit, 797 00:38:16,360 --> 00:38:18,240 Speaker 15: especially leading into ball season. 798 00:38:20,200 --> 00:38:23,640 Speaker 2: We uh were excited about We're excited about watching guys 799 00:38:23,680 --> 00:38:26,080 Speaker 2: like Sal Stewart and Matt McClain in large part because 800 00:38:26,120 --> 00:38:28,359 Speaker 2: of the spring numbers they put up. And then there's 801 00:38:28,360 --> 00:38:31,359 Speaker 2: a guy like Andrew Abbott, who was awesome last year, 802 00:38:31,840 --> 00:38:34,799 Speaker 2: especially in the first half, where the spring numbers left 803 00:38:34,800 --> 00:38:36,520 Speaker 2: a little bit a little bit to be desired. And 804 00:38:36,560 --> 00:38:38,840 Speaker 2: I think that was true for some of the relievers 805 00:38:38,880 --> 00:38:41,920 Speaker 2: as well. So from your perspective, what should fans do 806 00:38:42,560 --> 00:38:46,239 Speaker 2: when they try to gauge how seriously to take a 807 00:38:46,360 --> 00:38:47,960 Speaker 2: player's spring performance? 808 00:38:49,920 --> 00:38:56,920 Speaker 8: For me, not a con now. The thing that comes 809 00:38:56,920 --> 00:38:58,920 Speaker 8: from spring for. 810 00:38:58,840 --> 00:39:03,600 Speaker 15: A guy who's not necessarily a super known commodity. 811 00:39:04,239 --> 00:39:08,040 Speaker 8: You know, and Andrew can semi fit in. I know, 812 00:39:08,080 --> 00:39:10,680 Speaker 8: who's an All Star last year, but he. 813 00:39:10,640 --> 00:39:13,680 Speaker 15: Didn't have a huge back of the ball card, but 814 00:39:13,760 --> 00:39:20,040 Speaker 15: he is has proven himself to be above average major leaguer. 815 00:39:20,360 --> 00:39:22,400 Speaker 8: I don't put a ton into it. 816 00:39:22,520 --> 00:39:26,839 Speaker 15: The thing is for guys that aren't completely established, if 817 00:39:26,840 --> 00:39:29,280 Speaker 15: they have a good spring is the confidence they bring 818 00:39:29,400 --> 00:39:35,000 Speaker 15: into the regular season because it just it's just different. 819 00:39:35,719 --> 00:39:39,520 Speaker 15: And I don't it's hard to explain for anybody that 820 00:39:39,560 --> 00:39:41,640 Speaker 15: hasn't gone through it. But you want to get your 821 00:39:41,680 --> 00:39:44,279 Speaker 15: swing in the right place, you want to get your mechanics, 822 00:39:44,480 --> 00:39:47,439 Speaker 15: and you'll see a lot of guys who are established say, well, 823 00:39:47,680 --> 00:39:50,320 Speaker 15: the ball feels good coming out of my hand. They're 824 00:39:50,360 --> 00:39:53,719 Speaker 15: more trying to kind of work on things as it 825 00:39:53,760 --> 00:39:57,120 Speaker 15: gets closer to the regular season and for the most part, 826 00:39:57,360 --> 00:40:00,319 Speaker 15: get their pitch count up. I mean that is why 827 00:40:00,480 --> 00:40:02,880 Speaker 15: spring training is the link that it is is for 828 00:40:02,960 --> 00:40:05,479 Speaker 15: starting pitchers to be able to build up to throw, 829 00:40:06,360 --> 00:40:09,760 Speaker 15: you know, close to one hundred pitches for their first start. 830 00:40:09,800 --> 00:40:13,360 Speaker 8: I mean, that is the reason for the season. So 831 00:40:14,560 --> 00:40:15,120 Speaker 8: for Matt. 832 00:40:14,960 --> 00:40:18,359 Speaker 15: McClain, for salth Stewart, a lot of confidence coming in 833 00:40:18,520 --> 00:40:21,160 Speaker 15: Salle his first school year, Matt coming off a year 834 00:40:21,160 --> 00:40:23,920 Speaker 15: of injury, There's going to be a lot of confidence 835 00:40:24,080 --> 00:40:27,080 Speaker 15: coming into the season, you know. Per guy like Tyler 836 00:40:27,120 --> 00:40:30,480 Speaker 15: Stevenson who didn't have a great spring, He's got more 837 00:40:30,520 --> 00:40:33,000 Speaker 15: of a track record and is probably not as concerned 838 00:40:33,800 --> 00:40:36,560 Speaker 15: for Andrew. For Andrew if he would have had you know, 839 00:40:36,640 --> 00:40:39,279 Speaker 15: he had a clunker his last one. If he'd had 840 00:40:39,280 --> 00:40:41,160 Speaker 15: it as first out in a spring and then pitch 841 00:40:41,200 --> 00:40:43,160 Speaker 15: the way he did the rest of the way, this 842 00:40:43,239 --> 00:40:48,040 Speaker 15: wouldn't be a topic of conversation. So I don't put 843 00:40:48,080 --> 00:40:50,799 Speaker 15: a whole lot into it, Mo and I really didn't 844 00:40:50,840 --> 00:40:54,760 Speaker 15: pay attention until probably the last week of spring training 845 00:40:54,800 --> 00:40:59,719 Speaker 15: and more to find out who's healthy. That's really all 846 00:41:00,520 --> 00:41:02,719 Speaker 15: that I care about coming into the season, because I 847 00:41:02,760 --> 00:41:04,040 Speaker 15: know it's just a different ballgame. 848 00:41:05,680 --> 00:41:06,160 Speaker 3: Let me run. 849 00:41:06,200 --> 00:41:11,200 Speaker 2: This past year, Nick Krawl prioritized finding relievers, established big 850 00:41:11,280 --> 00:41:14,400 Speaker 2: league relievers, which I think will allow and this would 851 00:41:14,400 --> 00:41:16,759 Speaker 2: be easier to do if Caleb Ferguson was healthy. But 852 00:41:17,719 --> 00:41:20,239 Speaker 2: it feels like should allow Terry Francona to kind of 853 00:41:20,239 --> 00:41:22,600 Speaker 2: map out, you know, and how the game plays out 854 00:41:22,640 --> 00:41:25,200 Speaker 2: could affect this, but kind of map out who's gonna 855 00:41:25,200 --> 00:41:29,000 Speaker 2: pitch when. I think the X factor for that though, 856 00:41:29,200 --> 00:41:31,680 Speaker 2: is Connor Phillips, because I loved everything about him in 857 00:41:31,719 --> 00:41:33,400 Speaker 2: the final five or six weeks of the season. 858 00:41:33,760 --> 00:41:35,600 Speaker 3: Go back to last year when you watched him, would 859 00:41:35,640 --> 00:41:35,960 Speaker 3: you like. 860 00:41:38,200 --> 00:41:41,200 Speaker 15: He was I've been making notes all day just kind 861 00:41:41,200 --> 00:41:44,120 Speaker 15: of get the juices flowing. And he was the guy 862 00:41:44,200 --> 00:41:47,359 Speaker 15: that in the most important situation of the ball game, 863 00:41:47,680 --> 00:41:51,239 Speaker 15: I wanted the ball in his hand, period And he 864 00:41:51,400 --> 00:41:54,759 Speaker 15: stillsesses that kind of stuff. He was learning the role 865 00:41:54,800 --> 00:41:58,120 Speaker 15: a little bit, kind of like Graham ash Grab. Graham 866 00:41:58,160 --> 00:42:01,080 Speaker 15: ash Grab was learning the role of being reliever. And 867 00:42:01,160 --> 00:42:05,840 Speaker 15: I think that Connor Phillips has that mentality to be 868 00:42:05,920 --> 00:42:08,360 Speaker 15: really successful and it obviously he showed it towards the 869 00:42:08,440 --> 00:42:13,520 Speaker 15: end of last season, and I expect really good things 870 00:42:13,560 --> 00:42:16,439 Speaker 15: for him here in twenty twenty six. 871 00:42:17,440 --> 00:42:20,439 Speaker 8: Again, doesn't have a big back of the baseball card. 872 00:42:20,760 --> 00:42:25,080 Speaker 15: There's always going to be some concern for me about 873 00:42:25,120 --> 00:42:27,960 Speaker 15: those guys who come into the regular season. 874 00:42:29,320 --> 00:42:31,160 Speaker 8: Maybe feeling like they backed. 875 00:42:30,880 --> 00:42:33,319 Speaker 15: Into the job a little bit and feeling like they 876 00:42:33,320 --> 00:42:37,120 Speaker 15: have to go out and prove themselves and throw up, 877 00:42:37,760 --> 00:42:40,040 Speaker 15: you know, a zero eira for the season in their 878 00:42:40,080 --> 00:42:42,920 Speaker 15: first outing and that's just not going to happen. So 879 00:42:43,040 --> 00:42:46,040 Speaker 15: hopefully with some of the veteran guys that they've brought 880 00:42:46,080 --> 00:42:49,480 Speaker 15: into the bullpen, you talk to Pierce Johnsmealy who's obviously back, 881 00:42:50,239 --> 00:42:52,319 Speaker 15: there's some other guys that he can lean on, just 882 00:42:52,360 --> 00:42:54,799 Speaker 15: to say, hey, it's a different ballgame. Just go out 883 00:42:54,800 --> 00:42:57,040 Speaker 15: there and do what you do. The thing that stood 884 00:42:57,040 --> 00:42:59,240 Speaker 15: out to me across the board for the pitching staff 885 00:43:00,120 --> 00:43:00,640 Speaker 15: in its. 886 00:43:00,560 --> 00:43:02,440 Speaker 8: Entirety, there was a lot. 887 00:43:02,520 --> 00:43:05,880 Speaker 15: There was way too many walks for me across the 888 00:43:05,920 --> 00:43:09,840 Speaker 15: board in spring training for these guys, Connor, Phillips, Emilio, 889 00:43:10,640 --> 00:43:13,360 Speaker 15: you kind of name any one of them. And that 890 00:43:13,560 --> 00:43:15,960 Speaker 15: was one thing that I didn't like because all of 891 00:43:16,000 --> 00:43:19,839 Speaker 15: these guys have really good stuff and when they're at 892 00:43:19,880 --> 00:43:23,400 Speaker 15: their best, they're attacking the strike zone, and they didn't 893 00:43:23,400 --> 00:43:26,760 Speaker 15: do that in spring So that's something that I imagine DJ 894 00:43:26,880 --> 00:43:32,640 Speaker 15: Derek Johnson will address leading into tomorrow is look, you guys, 895 00:43:33,320 --> 00:43:35,560 Speaker 15: you're in shape, your body's ready to go, your arm's 896 00:43:35,640 --> 00:43:39,600 Speaker 15: ready to go. The stuff is there what makes you good, 897 00:43:39,880 --> 00:43:43,000 Speaker 15: and that's attacking the strike zone and going after these guys. 898 00:43:43,000 --> 00:43:46,120 Speaker 15: And hopefully we find that starts tomorrow because like I said, 899 00:43:46,239 --> 00:43:48,880 Speaker 15: it is a different ballgame, but you need to be 900 00:43:48,960 --> 00:43:52,120 Speaker 15: confident in your stuff to go out there and attack 901 00:43:52,160 --> 00:43:54,439 Speaker 15: the strike zone. And hopefully that's the case in Connor 902 00:43:54,480 --> 00:43:57,240 Speaker 15: Phillips the headlines that give. 903 00:43:57,080 --> 00:44:00,359 Speaker 2: Me your thoughts on the trio of Chase Burns, who 904 00:44:00,400 --> 00:44:03,640 Speaker 2: we got a chance to watch last year and Rhet Louder, 905 00:44:03,719 --> 00:44:06,320 Speaker 2: who he didn't, and Brandon Williamson, who he didn't. 906 00:44:08,080 --> 00:44:10,920 Speaker 15: One of my kind of things that I hammered on 907 00:44:11,080 --> 00:44:15,160 Speaker 15: today in my note taking was I thought, Rhet Louder, 908 00:44:16,320 --> 00:44:18,600 Speaker 15: you forgot about him a little bit because he missed 909 00:44:18,640 --> 00:44:21,879 Speaker 15: all last year. But I thought he looked as good 910 00:44:21,920 --> 00:44:24,919 Speaker 15: as anybody. Well, I'll pair him with Brandon WIBs because 911 00:44:25,200 --> 00:44:28,560 Speaker 15: Brandon looked awesome. But I'll rhtt. I thought looked very crisp. 912 00:44:28,600 --> 00:44:30,800 Speaker 15: I thought the movement was there. I thought the location 913 00:44:31,040 --> 00:44:35,239 Speaker 15: was there. The fastball kind of played up for I 914 00:44:35,280 --> 00:44:39,239 Speaker 15: mean it was ninety four ninety five ish plus I 915 00:44:39,239 --> 00:44:41,160 Speaker 15: thought it played up a little higher than that. I 916 00:44:41,160 --> 00:44:45,440 Speaker 15: think he's on track to continue to be the starter 917 00:44:45,600 --> 00:44:46,280 Speaker 15: that they thought. 918 00:44:47,040 --> 00:44:48,959 Speaker 8: Brandon was really digging. 919 00:44:48,600 --> 00:44:53,200 Speaker 15: His feet in to becoming, you know, kind of like 920 00:44:53,239 --> 00:44:56,799 Speaker 15: a number three starter in my book, when he kind 921 00:44:56,840 --> 00:44:57,600 Speaker 15: of hit the stride. 922 00:44:57,680 --> 00:45:00,239 Speaker 8: I guess it would have been you know, you whose 923 00:45:00,280 --> 00:45:00,640 Speaker 8: the year. 924 00:45:00,880 --> 00:45:04,640 Speaker 15: Maybe it was the second half of twenty three. 925 00:45:04,560 --> 00:45:06,560 Speaker 8: Yeah, he can have a twenty three. 926 00:45:06,640 --> 00:45:08,560 Speaker 15: He's kind of implemented that cutter a lot more and 927 00:45:08,600 --> 00:45:10,560 Speaker 15: it was going really well for him, and then he 928 00:45:10,960 --> 00:45:13,879 Speaker 15: came back and was looking really good and then had 929 00:45:13,880 --> 00:45:14,480 Speaker 15: the injury. 930 00:45:15,520 --> 00:45:17,799 Speaker 8: I was really excited for him because he's got a 931 00:45:17,800 --> 00:45:19,520 Speaker 8: good change up. You know, he was a big piece 932 00:45:19,560 --> 00:45:19,919 Speaker 8: of that. 933 00:45:19,880 --> 00:45:24,360 Speaker 15: Trade that came back from Seattle. So I'm excited for 934 00:45:24,440 --> 00:45:26,160 Speaker 15: him that he has the opportunity and. 935 00:45:26,719 --> 00:45:28,759 Speaker 8: He was going to have a spot anyway. This is 936 00:45:28,800 --> 00:45:29,840 Speaker 8: not due to injury. 937 00:45:31,680 --> 00:45:38,719 Speaker 15: Those two Rhett and Williamson, I feel have a more 938 00:45:38,760 --> 00:45:40,680 Speaker 15: advanced feel for pitching. 939 00:45:41,920 --> 00:45:45,000 Speaker 8: At the major league level than Chase Burns does. And 940 00:45:45,160 --> 00:45:47,279 Speaker 8: who's not high on Chase Burns. Everybody is. 941 00:45:47,320 --> 00:45:49,520 Speaker 15: He can out stuff a major league lineup on any 942 00:45:49,520 --> 00:45:52,360 Speaker 15: given day and maybe get burned for you know, a 943 00:45:52,400 --> 00:45:54,279 Speaker 15: couple sol you know, he walks the guy and then 944 00:45:54,320 --> 00:45:56,400 Speaker 15: it's a home run, but then he strikes out eleven 945 00:45:56,480 --> 00:45:57,719 Speaker 15: over five innings. 946 00:45:58,320 --> 00:45:59,560 Speaker 8: He is kind of a. 947 00:45:59,600 --> 00:46:04,160 Speaker 15: Hundred two point zero for me, maybe a little bit 948 00:46:04,200 --> 00:46:06,319 Speaker 15: more advanced feel for pitching. 949 00:46:06,040 --> 00:46:06,760 Speaker 8: At his age. 950 00:46:06,800 --> 00:46:09,960 Speaker 15: But that's because Hunter didn't pitch a ton, you know, 951 00:46:10,080 --> 00:46:10,560 Speaker 15: coming up. 952 00:46:10,600 --> 00:46:12,359 Speaker 8: It was high school and he was a two way 953 00:46:12,360 --> 00:46:13,560 Speaker 8: player and all these things. 954 00:46:13,640 --> 00:46:18,040 Speaker 15: But I think Chase has a good understanding of it. 955 00:46:18,080 --> 00:46:21,480 Speaker 15: I think RhD Louder and Williamson kind of put it 956 00:46:21,480 --> 00:46:23,960 Speaker 15: into use a little bit better within a GAMN situation. 957 00:46:24,080 --> 00:46:26,200 Speaker 15: But I do think that Chase has a really good 958 00:46:26,480 --> 00:46:30,440 Speaker 15: understanding of how it's supposed to look and once he can, 959 00:46:30,960 --> 00:46:32,960 Speaker 15: you know, maybe let off of the gas a little 960 00:46:32,960 --> 00:46:36,359 Speaker 15: bit early in counts, you know, and for him, letting 961 00:46:36,400 --> 00:46:39,080 Speaker 15: off the gas is ninety six ninety eight for first pitch, 962 00:46:39,120 --> 00:46:41,360 Speaker 15: getting me over strike and then run it up to 963 00:46:41,400 --> 00:46:43,719 Speaker 15: one oh two later in the count. As long as 964 00:46:43,719 --> 00:46:45,719 Speaker 15: he's a head and count's gonna be really good. So 965 00:46:45,800 --> 00:46:49,960 Speaker 15: the depth of the starting rotation obviously right now is 966 00:46:50,480 --> 00:46:52,640 Speaker 15: very key with with Hunter down for a while and 967 00:46:52,719 --> 00:46:57,120 Speaker 15: Lobillo who knows what, But they have the depth to 968 00:46:57,160 --> 00:46:59,560 Speaker 15: whether the storm because all of these guys that's had 969 00:46:59,640 --> 00:47:02,520 Speaker 15: success at the major league level, and I think that 970 00:47:02,640 --> 00:47:04,879 Speaker 15: bodes well for them because I think the offense is going. 971 00:47:04,800 --> 00:47:05,359 Speaker 8: To tick up. 972 00:47:06,880 --> 00:47:08,440 Speaker 3: When do you want to appear on our show again? 973 00:47:11,160 --> 00:47:12,080 Speaker 8: That's it, uh. 974 00:47:13,719 --> 00:47:17,600 Speaker 15: So so brother the way with MLB taking over the 975 00:47:17,640 --> 00:47:21,879 Speaker 15: reins of of the broadcast this year, I'm I'm only 976 00:47:21,920 --> 00:47:23,680 Speaker 15: doing this home prem posts. 977 00:47:23,960 --> 00:47:27,920 Speaker 8: I have a couple of offshoot radio colors on the road. 978 00:47:29,920 --> 00:47:31,560 Speaker 3: About. Yeah. 979 00:47:31,640 --> 00:47:35,400 Speaker 15: I really enjoyed those and I got I got lucky 980 00:47:35,440 --> 00:47:37,120 Speaker 15: with some of the places I get to go. 981 00:47:38,560 --> 00:47:39,800 Speaker 8: But I'm only doing the home. 982 00:47:39,680 --> 00:47:44,879 Speaker 15: Pre and posts. I'd be I'd be 985 00:47:50,600 --> 00:47:55,080 Speaker 15: happy to jump on on my on my road trips 986 00:47:55,120 --> 00:47:57,000 Speaker 15: when I'm not working, to come in the middle of 987 00:47:57,040 --> 00:48:00,200 Speaker 15: weak because at twofold one, it'll keep my eye on 988 00:48:00,280 --> 00:48:02,960 Speaker 15: it because typically in the past, if I'm not working. 989 00:48:02,719 --> 00:48:03,360 Speaker 8: I'm not working. 990 00:48:03,400 --> 00:48:05,000 Speaker 15: But I got to keep a little bit better eye 991 00:48:05,040 --> 00:48:07,719 Speaker 15: on it this year, and then I'll learn some things 992 00:48:07,760 --> 00:48:09,880 Speaker 15: from you about what's going on and what you're seeing 993 00:48:10,440 --> 00:48:13,320 Speaker 15: and we can kind of, you know, piece this thing together. 994 00:48:13,440 --> 00:48:15,440 Speaker 15: But yeah, I would love to do that kind of 995 00:48:15,719 --> 00:48:20,640 Speaker 15: Every little little sit down with uh little sit down 996 00:48:20,680 --> 00:48:21,759 Speaker 15: with Sam would be good. 997 00:48:21,760 --> 00:48:23,160 Speaker 8: I'd appreciate that. 998 00:48:23,640 --> 00:48:27,359 Speaker 2: Well, first of all, you things are awesome. First of all, 999 00:48:27,719 --> 00:48:34,160 Speaker 2: I'm I'm stoked. I'm I'm excited, and I'm excited in 1000 00:48:34,239 --> 00:48:36,360 Speaker 2: large part because of how spring training played out. And 1001 00:48:36,400 --> 00:48:38,480 Speaker 2: I know Hunter Green getting injured that's no good, and 1002 00:48:38,520 --> 00:48:42,520 Speaker 2: the dolo things not great. But they they cut two 1003 00:48:42,560 --> 00:48:46,279 Speaker 2: guys who had ops is above a thousand, right like 1004 00:48:47,040 --> 00:48:49,840 Speaker 2: they they cut dudes who I think in other years 1005 00:48:50,120 --> 00:48:54,439 Speaker 2: would be starting for this team tomorrow. So and I'm 1006 00:48:54,480 --> 00:48:58,120 Speaker 2: excited about the expectations that the team should have based 1007 00:48:58,160 --> 00:49:01,960 Speaker 2: on last year's take to the postseason. So I am excited. 1008 00:49:02,000 --> 00:49:03,160 Speaker 15: That's kind of what I want to ask you, if 1009 00:49:03,160 --> 00:49:04,959 Speaker 15: I can hold hold on to you for half a second, 1010 00:49:05,000 --> 00:49:07,839 Speaker 15: I want to ask it, what is your feeling of 1011 00:49:09,080 --> 00:49:11,839 Speaker 15: the expectations of the fan base around this team? 1012 00:49:11,880 --> 00:49:13,560 Speaker 8: Because I'll lead in with. 1013 00:49:13,880 --> 00:49:18,640 Speaker 15: I feel like league wide, the Reds have really kind 1014 00:49:18,680 --> 00:49:21,600 Speaker 15: of flown under the radar as far as expectations this year. 1015 00:49:21,640 --> 00:49:24,240 Speaker 15: People are talking more about the Pirates taking a step 1016 00:49:24,640 --> 00:49:28,040 Speaker 15: than the Reds. What do you feel like what you're 1017 00:49:28,080 --> 00:49:31,120 Speaker 15: feeling from the fan base as to their expectations for 1018 00:49:31,760 --> 00:49:32,320 Speaker 15: this team. 1019 00:49:32,520 --> 00:49:35,640 Speaker 8: Is that you know they have a good year, they're 1020 00:49:35,640 --> 00:49:39,440 Speaker 8: above five hundred? Is it playoffs? Is it when division? Like? 1021 00:49:39,480 --> 00:49:45,280 Speaker 8: What's what's your take on that because I myself, I think. 1022 00:49:45,120 --> 00:49:49,200 Speaker 2: Your average Red fan and I agree with this, would 1023 00:49:49,200 --> 00:49:53,239 Speaker 2: be doing cartwheels had they made one more move It 1024 00:49:53,560 --> 00:49:56,360 Speaker 2: still feels like they were like one in the outfield, 1025 00:49:57,080 --> 00:50:02,319 Speaker 2: one more move away, and so I think adding Ayohaneo 1026 00:50:02,400 --> 00:50:04,800 Speaker 2: Suarez was viewed as cool, but it was a necessity, 1027 00:50:04,920 --> 00:50:07,360 Speaker 2: Like you could not have gone through the entire offseason 1028 00:50:07,719 --> 00:50:09,440 Speaker 2: without adding a guy who could hit the ball out 1029 00:50:09,440 --> 00:50:13,160 Speaker 2: of the ballpark. I think there is a belief in 1030 00:50:14,080 --> 00:50:17,680 Speaker 2: the possibilities for the core of this team, but like 1031 00:50:17,719 --> 00:50:21,680 Speaker 2: that involves Sal Stewart who's a rookie, Matt McClain who 1032 00:50:21,719 --> 00:50:24,960 Speaker 2: had a poor year last season, Elie de la Cruz 1033 00:50:25,520 --> 00:50:29,000 Speaker 2: getting through the season healthy and managing you know, when 1034 00:50:29,040 --> 00:50:31,799 Speaker 2: he's maybe not feeling one hundred percent better than they 1035 00:50:31,800 --> 00:50:34,719 Speaker 2: did last year. I feel like there's I feel like 1036 00:50:34,760 --> 00:50:37,240 Speaker 2: there's more excitement based on the fact that the division 1037 00:50:37,280 --> 00:50:39,240 Speaker 2: seems to be a little bit more wide open because 1038 00:50:39,239 --> 00:50:42,120 Speaker 2: the Brewers are probably not going to win ninety seven games. 1039 00:50:42,560 --> 00:50:46,319 Speaker 2: But I would imagine your average Reds fan says, yeah, 1040 00:50:46,360 --> 00:50:48,600 Speaker 2: the team has potential, but I would feel better about 1041 00:50:48,600 --> 00:50:51,160 Speaker 2: it had they gotten one more guy. It still feels 1042 00:50:51,160 --> 00:50:55,000 Speaker 2: like the off season, wasn't wasn't complete. Does that make sense? 1043 00:50:55,920 --> 00:50:59,840 Speaker 15: It does, And I'd kind of countered that just a 1044 00:51:00,040 --> 00:51:04,480 Speaker 15: little bit because of Gino as Oh, we know Gino. 1045 00:51:04,680 --> 00:51:07,640 Speaker 15: He's been here before, hits forty nine home runs. 1046 00:51:08,040 --> 00:51:09,640 Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, you know what I mean. 1047 00:51:10,520 --> 00:51:14,400 Speaker 8: It's not like you brought in some slap what anyway, 1048 00:51:14,400 --> 00:51:15,920 Speaker 8: I won't, but it's thank you. 1049 00:51:16,080 --> 00:51:18,759 Speaker 15: It's just because I think there's a familiarity with him 1050 00:51:18,800 --> 00:51:22,120 Speaker 15: that it doesn't seem like as major signing as it is. 1051 00:51:24,120 --> 00:51:26,200 Speaker 15: I don't expect him to hit forty nine home runs 1052 00:51:26,600 --> 00:51:29,120 Speaker 15: here this year, but he drove in one hundred and 1053 00:51:29,160 --> 00:51:32,680 Speaker 15: eighteen rugs. He is battle tested, he's been in playoffs, 1054 00:51:32,680 --> 00:51:35,080 Speaker 15: and there's nothing but good things to say about Gino. 1055 00:51:35,560 --> 00:51:39,120 Speaker 15: And for a year, I think it was probably a 1056 00:51:39,160 --> 00:51:42,120 Speaker 15: letdown because everybody thought that there was an opportunity to 1057 00:51:42,160 --> 00:51:44,239 Speaker 15: get Cause Warmer and there. I think that was a 1058 00:51:44,280 --> 00:51:46,719 Speaker 15: real opportunity to get him. But don't let that be 1059 00:51:46,760 --> 00:51:51,200 Speaker 15: a letdown, because you've got Gino Suarez and now maybe 1060 00:51:51,239 --> 00:51:54,959 Speaker 15: Matt McClain resembles more of the player that you thought 1061 00:51:54,960 --> 00:51:55,319 Speaker 15: he was. 1062 00:51:55,920 --> 00:51:59,240 Speaker 8: You get hopefully both halves of Ellie. 1063 00:52:00,200 --> 00:52:04,279 Speaker 15: You've got Gino Noelvie Martes in one position, and I 1064 00:52:04,280 --> 00:52:06,080 Speaker 15: think he's got a chance to be your best hitter. 1065 00:52:07,840 --> 00:52:10,960 Speaker 8: I agree. 1066 00:52:11,280 --> 00:52:13,480 Speaker 15: I'm not disagreeing with you by any means, and I 1067 00:52:14,520 --> 00:52:19,400 Speaker 15: think that it's a good thing because I am not 1068 00:52:19,520 --> 00:52:23,719 Speaker 15: a Homer, but I do see the pathway for this 1069 00:52:23,920 --> 00:52:27,600 Speaker 15: goes this way. And obviously Hunter being down for a while, 1070 00:52:27,840 --> 00:52:31,080 Speaker 15: that's a blow. They had a better record without him last. 1071 00:52:31,000 --> 00:52:32,200 Speaker 8: Year when he was on the media. 1072 00:52:33,080 --> 00:52:35,200 Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, that's kind. 1073 00:52:35,000 --> 00:52:39,200 Speaker 15: Of an anomaly. But everybody needs to hold the Ford down. 1074 00:52:39,239 --> 00:52:40,359 Speaker 8: And with the starting. 1075 00:52:40,080 --> 00:52:41,719 Speaker 15: Pitching depth the way they have, the way that the 1076 00:52:41,760 --> 00:52:44,239 Speaker 15: bullpen's got some versatility, I think the offense is going 1077 00:52:44,320 --> 00:52:49,279 Speaker 15: to tick up. There's a pathway for this team to 1078 00:52:50,440 --> 00:52:55,279 Speaker 15: exceed expectations of probably the national media certainly, but I 1079 00:52:55,320 --> 00:52:59,920 Speaker 15: think it's good at the local crew. The fan base 1080 00:53:01,000 --> 00:53:04,440 Speaker 15: isn't overly hyped on them, because I'm hoping they'll be 1081 00:53:04,480 --> 00:53:07,919 Speaker 15: pleasantly surprised, because I know in Cincinnati, buddy of mine 1082 00:53:08,680 --> 00:53:10,799 Speaker 15: said it the other day. He said, it's either this 1083 00:53:10,880 --> 00:53:13,759 Speaker 15: is our year or we'll get him next year. I mean, 1084 00:53:13,800 --> 00:53:16,120 Speaker 15: that has kind of been Cincinnati sports for a while, 1085 00:53:16,200 --> 00:53:19,480 Speaker 15: and he's absolutely right, and I hate that and I'm 1086 00:53:19,480 --> 00:53:22,120 Speaker 15: not saying this is the year, but I do see 1087 00:53:22,160 --> 00:53:25,320 Speaker 15: a pathway and I just kind of win or lose tomorrow. 1088 00:53:25,320 --> 00:53:27,480 Speaker 15: If they lose tomorrow doesn't mean the season's over. If 1089 00:53:27,520 --> 00:53:29,719 Speaker 15: they win themar doesn't mean they win the division. But 1090 00:53:29,760 --> 00:53:32,800 Speaker 15: I think over the course of time, with Tito leading 1091 00:53:32,840 --> 00:53:35,840 Speaker 15: the way and the group that they have and the 1092 00:53:35,960 --> 00:53:40,000 Speaker 15: expectation that they have within the clubhouse, I think there's 1093 00:53:40,040 --> 00:53:41,880 Speaker 15: a good opportunity for something going to happen. 1094 00:53:42,719 --> 00:53:43,440 Speaker 3: I agree. 1095 00:53:43,680 --> 00:53:46,799 Speaker 2: I'm glad you're back, and we're now going to take 1096 00:53:46,840 --> 00:53:48,120 Speaker 2: you up on that and have you on the show 1097 00:53:48,160 --> 00:53:48,839 Speaker 2: like every other week. 1098 00:53:48,960 --> 00:53:53,279 Speaker 15: So just be careful what you well when they're on 1099 00:53:53,320 --> 00:53:56,960 Speaker 15: the road. Find me midweek on slow news Day and 1100 00:53:57,000 --> 00:53:58,799 Speaker 15: I'll you know, I'll be su to death. 1101 00:53:59,600 --> 00:54:02,400 Speaker 2: Don all right, can't wait. Yeah, now the weather 1133 00:55:37,960 --> 00:55:40,840 Speaker 17: was not so much nicer, so I had to because. 1134 00:55:40,600 --> 00:55:43,640 Speaker 2: I sometimes I'll leave the studio during a break in 1135 00:55:43,719 --> 00:55:45,840 Speaker 2: my show and down the hall where you it's a 1136 00:55:45,880 --> 00:55:49,560 Speaker 2: part you know, to me angry sports fans and those 1137 00:55:49,640 --> 00:55:52,239 Speaker 2: sports writers, and then I go down there and it's 1138 00:55:52,280 --> 00:55:55,080 Speaker 2: like a who's who of Cincinnati. There's food, there's drinks, 1139 00:55:55,120 --> 00:55:57,600 Speaker 2: there's a good time. Let's be real. 1142 00:56:01,920 --> 00:56:03,880 Speaker 17: I've always been the guy that's like, always had that 1143 00:56:03,920 --> 00:56:06,560 Speaker 17: open door policy where you can come share your thoughts 1144 00:56:06,560 --> 00:56:07,200 Speaker 17: and opinions. 1145 00:56:07,239 --> 00:56:07,640 Speaker 8: Mine. 1146 00:56:08,080 --> 00:56:11,120 Speaker 17: It just happens to be in between Justin Bieber and 1147 00:56:11,719 --> 00:56:15,080 Speaker 17: Rihanna wild conversation. Sorry, that's not it wrong, but you 1148 00:56:15,120 --> 00:56:17,399 Speaker 17: know you know what I mean. Yeah, having that music 1149 00:56:17,440 --> 00:56:19,560 Speaker 17: in there too, but no, having these friends that you 1150 00:56:19,680 --> 00:56:22,000 Speaker 17: genuinely did like I think, I don't know those that 1151 00:56:22,080 --> 00:56:26,120 Speaker 17: tune into show every day can vouch for that. Having 1152 00:56:26,120 --> 00:56:29,279 Speaker 17: those voices and those friends those people in Cincinnati that 1153 00:56:29,320 --> 00:56:31,400 Speaker 17: can share their opinions for me. 1154 00:56:31,480 --> 00:56:34,320 Speaker 2: It's like Mowen associates that they're really not all business. 1155 00:56:34,360 --> 00:56:37,879 Speaker 2: That's just mo and work friends, associates, acquaintances. 1156 00:56:38,160 --> 00:56:39,600 Speaker 3: Very few of them would claim me as a. 1157 00:56:39,600 --> 00:56:41,480 Speaker 17: Friend, right, So I made him feel more special, That's 1158 00:56:41,480 --> 00:56:42,839 Speaker 17: what I did. So I made a better sale. 1159 00:56:42,920 --> 00:56:45,960 Speaker 2: Now this is exciting because you've brought with you one 1160 00:56:45,960 --> 00:56:48,680 Speaker 2: of your friends. We try 1489 01:09:31,360 --> 01:09:34,479 Speaker 20: to get involved with things like the Children's Home in 1490 01:09:34,840 --> 01:09:36,920 Speaker 20: a nice thing that we do, which is at the 1491 01:09:38,000 --> 01:09:41,160 Speaker 20: convention Center. We started October thirteen and 1497 01:09:53,360 --> 01:09:56,080 Speaker 20: we've been the lead sponsor there and that's wonderful. That works, 1498 01:09:56,360 --> 01:09:59,479 Speaker 20: you know with homeless children's three charities, Yes, that one 1499 01:09:59,560 --> 01:10:02,040 Speaker 20: is just that's probably my personal favorite. 1500 01:10:02,080 --> 01:10:04,240 Speaker 3: And this year got the Borough Foundation in, yes. 1501 01:10:04,040 --> 01:10:04,639 Speaker 5: And that was great. 1502 01:10:04,680 --> 01:10:06,920 Speaker 20: They actually asked me, they're like, well what if we 1503 01:10:06,960 --> 01:10:09,080 Speaker 20: get you know, a different some other foundations. The Ruby Foundation was there also, so that 1510 01:10:22,640 --> 01:10:24,920 Speaker 20: was great, and I'm like, let's have everybody there because 1511 01:10:24,920 --> 01:10:26,439 Speaker 20: the more they're like do you mind, and like, I 1512 01:10:26,439 --> 01:10:26,960 Speaker 20: don't mind. 1513 01:10:27,360 --> 01:10:28,360 Speaker 5: All the money is going for the. 1514 01:10:28,439 --> 01:10:29,040 Speaker 3: For the kids. 1515 01:10:29,439 --> 01:10:31,519 Speaker 20: So anything that we can do, we want to get 1516 01:10:31,560 --> 01:10:33,479 Speaker 20: jumped in. Let's 1659 01:15:45,439 --> 01:15:49,280 Speaker 2: talk about the way that the roster was finalized. And 1660 01:15:49,320 --> 01:15:51,680 Speaker 2: what was interesting to me is you had a guy 1661 01:15:51,720 --> 01:15:54,679 Speaker 2: in Reesigns who had an OPS above fourteen hundred didn't 1662 01:15:54,680 --> 01:15:57,320 Speaker 2: make the team. You had a guy in JJ Bledet, 1663 01:15:57,840 --> 01:16:02,160 Speaker 2: an established Big leaguer at OPS above one thousand, didn't 1664 01:16:02,200 --> 01:16:05,760 Speaker 2: make the team. Is this the deepest Reds team they've 1665 01:16:05,800 --> 01:16:08,480 Speaker 2: had since you became the voice of the team. 1666 01:16:09,040 --> 01:16:10,400 Speaker 19: Oh, there's no question. I mean. 1667 01:16:10,680 --> 01:16:12,960 Speaker 13: And that's the thing, like Jeff and I were talking 1668 01:16:12,960 --> 01:16:15,040 Speaker 13: about during the game yesterday, even though those guys aren't 1669 01:16:15,080 --> 01:16:17,280 Speaker 13: on the team, they are still very much a part 1670 01:16:17,320 --> 01:16:21,479 Speaker 13: of the mix of this team. So yeah, I think 1671 01:16:22,320 --> 01:16:27,880 Speaker 13: definitely the depth of this team will allow them to 1672 01:16:27,920 --> 01:16:30,519 Speaker 13: withstand some injuries, and we're seeing that in the pitching 1673 01:16:30,520 --> 01:16:33,080 Speaker 13: staff right out of the gate. Look, nobody wants to 1674 01:16:33,080 --> 01:16:35,320 Speaker 13: see Hunter Green and Nickelodolo start the year on the 1675 01:16:35,320 --> 01:16:36,200 Speaker 13: injured list. 1676 01:16:35,960 --> 01:16:36,120 Speaker 8: But. 1677 01:16:37,600 --> 01:16:38,760 Speaker 19: You can't do anything about it. 1678 01:16:38,800 --> 01:16:41,960 Speaker 13: The good news is they didn't trade away from their 1679 01:16:42,000 --> 01:16:44,920 Speaker 13: position of strength, so now they've at least got the 1680 01:16:44,960 --> 01:16:46,920 Speaker 13: weapons to be able to weather the storm if the 1681 01:16:46,960 --> 01:16:50,519 Speaker 13: same thing happens from an offensive standpoint, say somebody comes 1682 01:16:50,560 --> 01:16:53,680 Speaker 13: out and has a slow start to the season. The 1683 01:16:53,720 --> 01:16:57,360 Speaker 13: good news is if they need to call on reinforcements, 1684 01:16:57,439 --> 01:17:00,519 Speaker 13: they're there in TRIPAA, and these guys, based on their 1685 01:17:00,520 --> 01:17:03,040 Speaker 13: spring look like they are poised to be able to 1686 01:17:03,080 --> 01:17:06,840 Speaker 13: step in and fill in without missing a beat. That's 1687 01:17:06,920 --> 01:17:10,280 Speaker 13: what championship teams are made of. It's nice to be 1688 01:17:10,360 --> 01:17:11,559 Speaker 13: able to have that luxury here. 1689 01:17:11,720 --> 01:17:14,800 Speaker 2: I am so excited to see what Sal Stewart can do. 1690 01:17:14,880 --> 01:17:17,640 Speaker 2: And that would have been the case regardless, But I 1691 01:17:17,640 --> 01:17:20,160 Speaker 2: feel like every time he's had a test put in 1692 01:17:20,240 --> 01:17:21,800 Speaker 2: front of him, he's passed it. 1693 01:17:21,800 --> 01:17:22,639 Speaker 3: With flying colors. 1694 01:17:22,720 --> 01:17:25,760 Speaker 2: Late last September, right like, all right, let's bring him up, 1695 01:17:26,080 --> 01:17:28,439 Speaker 2: some might have argued overdue, let's see what he does. 1696 01:17:28,880 --> 01:17:31,519 Speaker 2: And he was awesome this spring. I think we all 1697 01:17:31,520 --> 01:17:33,120 Speaker 2: felt like he was going to get a spot on 1698 01:17:33,160 --> 01:17:35,200 Speaker 2: the opening day roster. But challenge him a little bit. 1699 01:17:35,200 --> 01:17:37,439 Speaker 2: He's got to make it well. He does with flying Colors. 1700 01:17:38,080 --> 01:17:41,519 Speaker 2: He's held his own defensively. I hear people who cover 1701 01:17:41,560 --> 01:17:44,120 Speaker 2: this sport nationally talk about him being a National League 1702 01:17:44,200 --> 01:17:46,479 Speaker 2: rookie of the Year. I'm bullish on him, and he's 1703 01:17:46,520 --> 01:17:48,640 Speaker 2: going to be betting forth, which I love. That's more 1704 01:17:48,680 --> 01:17:51,040 Speaker 2: of a statement than a question. Your thoughts on Sal. 1705 01:17:50,920 --> 01:17:54,439 Speaker 13: Stewart Man, you echoed a lot of my thoughts. The 1706 01:17:54,520 --> 01:17:57,120 Speaker 13: thing that impresses me about him, you talked about the test. 1707 01:17:57,200 --> 01:17:59,960 Speaker 13: Every time that a test is put in front of him, 1708 01:18:00,040 --> 01:18:03,000 Speaker 13: he's ready to go. I mean, it's okay. How does 1709 01:18:03,040 --> 01:18:05,880 Speaker 13: he handle this situation? You know, runner in scoring position, 1710 01:18:06,080 --> 01:18:09,360 Speaker 13: two outs? Does he shortened up to just get a 1711 01:18:09,400 --> 01:18:10,760 Speaker 13: base hit and drive that run home? 1712 01:18:10,920 --> 01:18:11,160 Speaker 8: Check? 1713 01:18:11,240 --> 01:18:13,760 Speaker 13: Yeah, he does that. He lost a bunch of weight 1714 01:18:13,800 --> 01:18:16,599 Speaker 13: in the offseason. He got leaner in a good way. 1715 01:18:17,160 --> 01:18:19,040 Speaker 13: But was he going to try to compensate for that 1716 01:18:19,120 --> 01:18:21,000 Speaker 13: and try to just show that he's still got some 1717 01:18:21,040 --> 01:18:23,639 Speaker 13: power and try to launch everything and hit everything out 1718 01:18:23,680 --> 01:18:26,280 Speaker 13: of the ballpark. Well, his early batting practice and spring 1719 01:18:26,360 --> 01:18:30,160 Speaker 13: training right when everybody reported would tell you, yeah, that's 1720 01:18:30,160 --> 01:18:32,120 Speaker 13: what he was trying to do. Games come around, that's 1721 01:18:32,160 --> 01:18:34,719 Speaker 13: not at all what he's doing. I mean, he looks great. 1722 01:18:34,720 --> 01:18:37,360 Speaker 13: He's still driving the ball to all fields, he's gap 1723 01:18:37,439 --> 01:18:39,400 Speaker 13: to gap, and he can still drive the ball out 1724 01:18:39,400 --> 01:18:42,200 Speaker 13: of the ballpark. So that test has passed. How does 1725 01:18:42,200 --> 01:18:44,479 Speaker 13: he handle guys when the pitchers start to ramp up 1726 01:18:44,520 --> 01:18:48,240 Speaker 13: and start to increase their breaking ball workload, Well, he 1727 01:18:48,280 --> 01:18:54,320 Speaker 13: handles that just fine too. This guy is unreal in 1728 01:18:54,400 --> 01:18:57,360 Speaker 13: so many ways. Look, I'll be the first one to 1729 01:18:57,400 --> 01:19:00,240 Speaker 13: tell you that prospects are all good and well They're 1730 01:19:00,280 --> 01:19:04,640 Speaker 13: plenty exciting. We all get excited about prospects, but what 1731 01:19:05,080 --> 01:19:06,920 Speaker 13: are they when they get to the major league level? 1732 01:19:07,120 --> 01:19:09,200 Speaker 13: Can they can they back up what they did in 1733 01:19:09,280 --> 01:19:11,280 Speaker 13: the minor leagues? Sal has done that. 1734 01:19:14,120 --> 01:19:14,639 Speaker 8: So far. 1735 01:19:15,479 --> 01:19:18,920 Speaker 13: And look, Terry Francona has been around this game for 1736 01:19:19,000 --> 01:19:21,640 Speaker 13: a long long time. There's a reason he's had all 1737 01:19:21,680 --> 01:19:25,599 Speaker 13: the success that he's had. And if he is willing 1738 01:19:25,680 --> 01:19:28,280 Speaker 13: to bat a rookie cleanup, that tells you a little 1739 01:19:28,520 --> 01:19:31,519 Speaker 13: about the kid. And Sal's had to earn it, look 1740 01:19:31,640 --> 01:19:34,640 Speaker 13: like you said, he I think we all assumed that 1741 01:19:34,680 --> 01:19:37,519 Speaker 13: he would be this team's every day first baseman, but 1742 01:19:37,720 --> 01:19:41,160 Speaker 13: nothing was guaranteed coming into spring training. He definitely earned it, 1743 01:19:41,200 --> 01:19:45,080 Speaker 13: like you said, and I'm I'm excited to see what 1744 01:19:45,320 --> 01:19:49,000 Speaker 13: he's capable of. I wouldn't say that the team hinges 1745 01:19:49,040 --> 01:19:53,720 Speaker 13: on his success, but if he is successful, I think 1746 01:19:53,760 --> 01:19:56,280 Speaker 13: this team's gonna be really, really good. 1747 01:19:56,600 --> 01:19:59,000 Speaker 3: How much does it hinge on Matt McClain Because there's 1748 01:19:59,040 --> 01:20:01,200 Speaker 3: a guy who had a down season putting up nice 1749 01:20:01,280 --> 01:20:03,800 Speaker 3: numbers in games that don't count, and then there are 1750 01:20:03,840 --> 01:20:06,680 Speaker 3: the numbers that Matt McClain put up which were otherworldly. 1751 01:20:08,000 --> 01:20:09,920 Speaker 5: What do we do with that. 1752 01:20:09,920 --> 01:20:12,760 Speaker 13: That's the thing that I think is worth focusing on, 1753 01:20:12,840 --> 01:20:16,400 Speaker 13: because you know, when you talk about who are the 1754 01:20:16,439 --> 01:20:20,000 Speaker 13: most valuable pieces of this lineup, sure it's Suarez, Sure 1755 01:20:20,000 --> 01:20:24,320 Speaker 13: it's Ellie. Those guys are those guys are your superstars 1756 01:20:24,360 --> 01:20:27,920 Speaker 13: in this lineup. But for me, they can be who 1757 01:20:27,960 --> 01:20:31,120 Speaker 13: they're capable of being if Matt McClain is hitting well 1758 01:20:31,160 --> 01:20:34,439 Speaker 13: like that. To me, McClain is probably the most important 1759 01:20:34,479 --> 01:20:37,439 Speaker 13: piece in this Red's lineup because not only is he 1760 01:20:37,479 --> 01:20:39,960 Speaker 13: a table setter near the top of the order, we 1761 01:20:40,040 --> 01:20:42,439 Speaker 13: know what TJ. Friedel's gonna do. Friedel's gonna do everything 1762 01:20:42,439 --> 01:20:44,120 Speaker 13: in his power to get on base. So what does 1763 01:20:44,200 --> 01:20:49,280 Speaker 13: McClain do behind him and ahead of Ellie? And look, 1764 01:20:50,360 --> 01:20:52,840 Speaker 13: you try not to put too much stock and you 1765 01:20:52,960 --> 01:20:56,439 Speaker 13: try not to get too excited over spring training numbers. 1766 01:20:56,840 --> 01:20:59,360 Speaker 13: But when a guy hits over five hundred for the spring, 1767 01:20:59,439 --> 01:21:01,120 Speaker 13: how do you not excited about that? 1768 01:21:01,240 --> 01:21:04,080 Speaker 19: I mean, come on, it's not real. It was it was. 1769 01:21:04,600 --> 01:21:07,040 Speaker 13: It was incredible watching him on a day in a 1770 01:21:07,120 --> 01:21:09,719 Speaker 13: day out basis because you're like, all right, is today 1771 01:21:09,760 --> 01:21:11,559 Speaker 13: the day he falls off? I went over for three, 1772 01:21:11,640 --> 01:21:13,479 Speaker 13: all right, he's coming back to earth. The next day 1773 01:21:13,600 --> 01:21:16,320 Speaker 13: gets three knocks hits a homer and drives in four, 1774 01:21:16,320 --> 01:21:18,960 Speaker 13: and you're like, oh, well, okay, he's right back to 1775 01:21:19,000 --> 01:21:19,679 Speaker 13: his old tricks. 1776 01:21:19,680 --> 01:21:22,800 Speaker 19: So uh. It was incredible. The thing about it. 1777 01:21:22,720 --> 01:21:26,840 Speaker 13: Though, MOO, is he wasn't just driving the pitch in 1778 01:21:27,040 --> 01:21:29,639 Speaker 13: that we know he's been able to handle. They were 1779 01:21:29,680 --> 01:21:32,080 Speaker 13: still feeding him the breaking balls away. He was able 1780 01:21:32,080 --> 01:21:35,120 Speaker 13: to shoot that to right field. The most encouraging sign. 1781 01:21:35,320 --> 01:21:38,360 Speaker 13: I go back to day one of spring training. He 1782 01:21:38,479 --> 01:21:41,479 Speaker 13: hit the ball to the right side every time he 1783 01:21:41,560 --> 01:21:43,720 Speaker 13: came to the plate, and it took me a couple 1784 01:21:43,840 --> 01:21:45,680 Speaker 13: days to finally track him down and ask if it 1785 01:21:45,720 --> 01:21:49,160 Speaker 13: was intentional. He goes, well, I'm not really kind of 1786 01:21:49,160 --> 01:21:52,200 Speaker 13: but not, well, I guess, And I was like, yeah, 1787 01:21:52,240 --> 01:21:54,280 Speaker 13: he was definitely trying to do that, like that was 1788 01:21:54,520 --> 01:21:57,400 Speaker 13: that was a point of emphasis for him. So he 1789 01:21:57,479 --> 01:21:59,599 Speaker 13: started doing that, and then he showed that he could 1790 01:21:59,600 --> 01:22:02,439 Speaker 13: still drive the ball, and those were the things to 1791 01:22:02,479 --> 01:22:06,160 Speaker 13: me that were the most exciting and make me think that, yeah, no, 1792 01:22:06,200 --> 01:22:08,719 Speaker 13: he's not going to hit five hundred during the regular season, 1793 01:22:09,680 --> 01:22:11,479 Speaker 13: but show me a Reds fan that wouldn't take him 1794 01:22:11,520 --> 01:22:12,240 Speaker 13: hitting two eighty. 1795 01:22:12,479 --> 01:22:15,240 Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yeah we'll take that. 1796 01:22:15,439 --> 01:22:19,519 Speaker 2: Yes, I can't have second worst production in the league 1797 01:22:19,520 --> 01:22:20,160 Speaker 2: from the two hole. 1798 01:22:20,200 --> 01:22:21,240 Speaker 3: Gimme league average. 1799 01:22:21,280 --> 01:22:23,559 Speaker 2: Gimme league average plus on top of what I think 1800 01:22:23,560 --> 01:22:25,720 Speaker 2: I'm gonna get for TJ in the top spot, and 1801 01:22:25,800 --> 01:22:27,760 Speaker 2: I will live with that as I go three through 1802 01:22:27,760 --> 01:22:28,639 Speaker 2: five in the batting war. 1803 01:22:28,840 --> 01:22:30,640 Speaker 13: No doubt, And I don't think he's going to be 1804 01:22:30,640 --> 01:22:32,880 Speaker 13: a league average player. I really believe he's going to 1805 01:22:32,960 --> 01:22:35,880 Speaker 13: be not just above average, but probably a well above 1806 01:22:35,920 --> 01:22:40,120 Speaker 13: average hitter. This guy can hit. I have all the 1807 01:22:40,200 --> 01:22:41,920 Speaker 13: confidence in the world that he's going to be able 1808 01:22:41,960 --> 01:22:44,479 Speaker 13: to hit. And think about this, This is a red 1809 01:22:44,520 --> 01:22:48,519 Speaker 13: scene that made the playoffs last year with Matt McClain 1810 01:22:48,640 --> 01:22:53,479 Speaker 13: hopefully having the worst year of his career. So keep 1811 01:22:53,479 --> 01:22:58,439 Speaker 13: that in mind with him hitting number two for most 1812 01:22:58,479 --> 01:23:01,920 Speaker 13: of that time. So if he is who he is 1813 01:23:02,000 --> 01:23:04,720 Speaker 13: capable of being and who we all believe that he 1814 01:23:04,800 --> 01:23:08,360 Speaker 13: will be, including himself, this team is going to be 1815 01:23:08,360 --> 01:23:10,639 Speaker 13: in a really good spot because that that just takes 1816 01:23:10,640 --> 01:23:16,799 Speaker 13: so much pressure off Ellie and Sal and Gino. Because 1817 01:23:17,240 --> 01:23:19,960 Speaker 13: the pressure then when you've got him hitting the way 1818 01:23:20,000 --> 01:23:22,240 Speaker 13: he's capable of, shifts all the way to the picture, 1819 01:23:22,360 --> 01:23:24,960 Speaker 13: and when you've got the pressure on the picture with 1820 01:23:25,000 --> 01:23:27,240 Speaker 13: those guys coming up, oh, look. 1821 01:23:27,080 --> 01:23:29,439 Speaker 2: At Tommy throw a voice of the Reds joining US 1822 01:23:29,479 --> 01:23:33,240 Speaker 2: Reds and Red Sox tomorrow opening Day. Because of the 1823 01:23:33,560 --> 01:23:36,639 Speaker 2: names we mentioned before, Reeseigns and JJ Bladay who are 1824 01:23:36,720 --> 01:23:41,400 Speaker 2: not here. Because of how Tito kind of challenged Noelve 1825 01:23:41,520 --> 01:23:44,400 Speaker 2: Marte midway through spring training, should I assume that there 1826 01:23:44,520 --> 01:23:48,439 Speaker 2: is a somewhat short ish leash on him and right field. 1827 01:23:49,920 --> 01:23:53,760 Speaker 13: Nobody is said that, but but I kind of get 1828 01:23:53,800 --> 01:23:56,840 Speaker 13: the sense of that a little bit, you know, I 1829 01:23:57,479 --> 01:23:59,639 Speaker 13: I think he's got to come out and perform. 1830 01:23:59,680 --> 01:24:03,000 Speaker 19: But here's the other part about it too. This team's in. 1831 01:24:02,920 --> 01:24:05,400 Speaker 13: A position now where they're not just trying to sneak 1832 01:24:05,439 --> 01:24:07,080 Speaker 13: into the playoffs. This is a team that wants to 1833 01:24:07,080 --> 01:24:13,120 Speaker 13: win the division. So this is a bonafide postseason contending 1834 01:24:13,200 --> 01:24:16,240 Speaker 13: caliber team. You've got to perform on a team like this. 1835 01:24:16,600 --> 01:24:21,400 Speaker 13: And look, we know that key Brian Hayes is a 1836 01:24:21,439 --> 01:24:24,040 Speaker 13: guy that it's not going to be a guy that's 1837 01:24:24,080 --> 01:24:27,040 Speaker 13: a catalyst for this offense. He's whatever you get from 1838 01:24:27,120 --> 01:24:30,599 Speaker 13: him is gravy because of his defense. But that is 1839 01:24:30,640 --> 01:24:37,479 Speaker 13: true if this team's producing offensively. I think when you 1840 01:24:37,520 --> 01:24:39,800 Speaker 13: look at a guy like Noelvie Marte, the reason those 1841 01:24:39,800 --> 01:24:42,639 Speaker 13: two are different. Is Marte is not a gold glove 1842 01:24:42,720 --> 01:24:46,559 Speaker 13: right fielder, and maybe one day he can develop into it. 1843 01:24:46,600 --> 01:24:48,639 Speaker 13: He's a great athlete, so I'm not saying that he can't. 1844 01:24:49,160 --> 01:24:53,080 Speaker 13: But his defense is still not quite all the way there. 1845 01:24:53,160 --> 01:24:55,960 Speaker 13: So he's going to have to perform offensively because he's 1846 01:24:56,000 --> 01:24:58,559 Speaker 13: expected to still be a pretty good piece. 1847 01:24:58,360 --> 01:24:59,040 Speaker 19: Of this offense. 1848 01:24:59,080 --> 01:25:03,519 Speaker 13: So yeah, he's going to need to play well on 1849 01:25:03,600 --> 01:25:07,360 Speaker 13: both sides of the ball, and otherwise. There's reinforcements down 1850 01:25:07,360 --> 01:25:10,519 Speaker 13: there that we just talked about. So I don't know 1851 01:25:10,560 --> 01:25:12,400 Speaker 13: that I would say it's a short leash. 1852 01:25:12,080 --> 01:25:15,120 Speaker 8: But I don't know how long the runway is. 1853 01:25:15,160 --> 01:25:17,519 Speaker 19: I don't think we're reckland in the seven forty seven that. 1854 01:25:19,040 --> 01:25:19,599 Speaker 3: You mentioned. 1855 01:25:19,680 --> 01:25:22,080 Speaker 2: You mentioned less than ideal. You don't have Hunter Green 1856 01:25:22,360 --> 01:25:25,000 Speaker 2: or Nick Loodolo on the active roster to start the season. Hunter, 1857 01:25:25,040 --> 01:25:27,639 Speaker 2: it's going to be a while, hopefully Nickolodolo not so much. 1858 01:25:28,000 --> 01:25:29,880 Speaker 2: What I think is interesting is and you and I 1859 01:25:29,960 --> 01:25:33,240 Speaker 2: talked before the first Cactus League game about the bullpen 1860 01:25:33,479 --> 01:25:35,760 Speaker 2: and the fact that Nick Crawl went out and got 1861 01:25:35,800 --> 01:25:38,519 Speaker 2: guys that I think fit specific roles he's not going 1862 01:25:38,600 --> 01:25:41,320 Speaker 2: to have. They won't have Caleb Ferguson to start the 1863 01:25:41,320 --> 01:25:43,080 Speaker 2: season early in the year. What's going to be the 1864 01:25:43,120 --> 01:25:44,360 Speaker 2: ripple effect of his absence? 1865 01:25:45,360 --> 01:25:48,320 Speaker 13: Uh, you know, Sam Mall threw the ball really well, 1866 01:25:49,000 --> 01:25:52,040 Speaker 13: and I think he's the ripple effect. So that's that 1867 01:25:52,160 --> 01:25:56,000 Speaker 13: to me, he's pretty encouraging. Everybody loved what they've seen 1868 01:25:56,040 --> 01:25:59,479 Speaker 13: from Sam Mall. I trust the opinions the guys that 1869 01:25:59,600 --> 01:26:02,320 Speaker 13: know a lot more about that stuff than I do. 1870 01:26:02,600 --> 01:26:06,360 Speaker 13: And it sounded like what sam Maul was doing was real. 1871 01:26:06,400 --> 01:26:07,880 Speaker 13: I mean the ball was coming out of his hand 1872 01:26:07,920 --> 01:26:11,559 Speaker 13: really well, a little closer to the guy that the 1873 01:26:11,600 --> 01:26:13,400 Speaker 13: Reds thought they were trading for when they made that 1874 01:26:13,439 --> 01:26:15,439 Speaker 13: trade with Oakland a few years ago. So I think 1875 01:26:15,439 --> 01:26:19,120 Speaker 13: that's encouraging. And if Sam Maul is who he was, 1876 01:26:20,280 --> 01:26:22,400 Speaker 13: and as you get up in years, it's a little 1877 01:26:22,400 --> 01:26:27,000 Speaker 13: harder to go back to who the previous version was. 1878 01:26:27,080 --> 01:26:30,240 Speaker 13: But again, if you're completely healthy, and I don't think 1879 01:26:30,240 --> 01:26:32,800 Speaker 13: he was all the way healthy last year, then maybe 1880 01:26:32,840 --> 01:26:35,360 Speaker 13: you can get that. And he certainly looked like it 1881 01:26:35,400 --> 01:26:38,720 Speaker 13: in the spring. So that to me says that the 1882 01:26:38,760 --> 01:26:41,880 Speaker 13: Reds can weather the storm without Caleb Ferguson. Hopefully it's 1883 01:26:41,960 --> 01:26:44,080 Speaker 13: nothing major. I know he was gonna get looked at 1884 01:26:44,080 --> 01:26:47,400 Speaker 13: again today, get the MRI to see what the progress 1885 01:26:47,479 --> 01:26:50,320 Speaker 13: is on the oblique. So hopefully it's a short term 1886 01:26:50,439 --> 01:26:53,280 Speaker 13: stint on the IL for him, just like the hope 1887 01:26:53,360 --> 01:26:55,400 Speaker 13: is with Lodolo. But I think the bullpen's still going 1888 01:26:55,479 --> 01:26:58,200 Speaker 13: to be in decent shape. There were some guys that 1889 01:26:58,320 --> 01:27:01,000 Speaker 13: had some rough outings, so it kind of, uh, it 1890 01:27:01,520 --> 01:27:06,040 Speaker 13: heightens your awareness, I guess a little bit of ore. 1891 01:27:06,479 --> 01:27:08,120 Speaker 13: Do we need to keep a closer eye on these 1892 01:27:08,120 --> 01:27:12,479 Speaker 13: guys once the season starts. But again, you try not 1893 01:27:12,560 --> 01:27:14,680 Speaker 13: to panic too much on spring training numbers. There are 1894 01:27:14,720 --> 01:27:17,080 Speaker 13: a lot of really good players that had terrible springs 1895 01:27:17,320 --> 01:27:19,640 Speaker 13: that you know, this is across the league and it 1896 01:27:19,720 --> 01:27:24,960 Speaker 13: happens every year, and look nobody when it comes down 1897 01:27:25,000 --> 01:27:27,360 Speaker 13: to voting for m VP or Cy Young looks back 1898 01:27:27,400 --> 01:27:29,439 Speaker 13: and goes, well, how do they do in March? So 1899 01:27:30,040 --> 01:27:32,080 Speaker 13: that's that's the other thing to keep in mind. You know, 1900 01:27:32,120 --> 01:27:34,720 Speaker 13: it's uh, no need to panic yet on some of 1901 01:27:34,720 --> 01:27:36,640 Speaker 13: those bullpen arms. I still think the bullpen is going 1902 01:27:36,680 --> 01:27:39,120 Speaker 13: to be in good shape. And based on what we 1903 01:27:39,160 --> 01:27:40,880 Speaker 13: saw from Sam and the way he was throwing the ball, 1904 01:27:40,880 --> 01:27:43,880 Speaker 13: I think I think he will fill in just fine for. 1905 01:27:43,920 --> 01:27:46,840 Speaker 2: Cable can I get the Connor phillips I saw last September. 1906 01:27:47,200 --> 01:27:48,680 Speaker 19: Boy, that'd be nice, wasn't it. 1907 01:27:51,000 --> 01:27:52,360 Speaker 8: I don't know. 1908 01:27:52,760 --> 01:27:54,400 Speaker 19: I wish I had a better answer for you. 1909 01:27:54,960 --> 01:27:55,360 Speaker 3: I don't. 1910 01:27:55,560 --> 01:27:58,040 Speaker 19: I don't know if. 1911 01:27:58,280 --> 01:28:00,760 Speaker 13: If so, he makes the bullpen really good and he 1912 01:28:00,840 --> 01:28:03,080 Speaker 13: gives you another weapon toward the back end. 1913 01:28:03,439 --> 01:28:05,680 Speaker 19: But he's gonna have to work his way to that. 1914 01:28:06,200 --> 01:28:06,439 Speaker 19: You know. 1915 01:28:07,320 --> 01:28:12,200 Speaker 13: There were some times where we saw flashes of Connor 1916 01:28:12,240 --> 01:28:15,320 Speaker 13: where he was really fighting it, and then there were 1917 01:28:15,400 --> 01:28:19,360 Speaker 13: the other times and really more recently where he looked 1918 01:28:19,479 --> 01:28:23,200 Speaker 13: more dominant, like September. So hopefully he can channel that 1919 01:28:23,360 --> 01:28:25,360 Speaker 13: we see more of that. It's possible. I mean, it's 1920 01:28:25,439 --> 01:28:27,879 Speaker 13: it's there, the arms there, there's no reason he shouldn't 1921 01:28:27,880 --> 01:28:32,160 Speaker 13: be So yeah, I think it's a fair hope. But 1922 01:28:32,520 --> 01:28:34,519 Speaker 13: he's another guy that had to make this team. 1923 01:28:35,920 --> 01:28:38,960 Speaker 3: Tommy, awesome stuff as always. Man, enjoy your last day 1924 01:28:38,960 --> 01:28:40,880 Speaker 3: off for a while and have your opening down. We've podcast the Jared Calhoun interview the press 1964 01:30:49,000 --> 01:30:56,120 Speaker 2: conference today. I, like most sports fans, am rarely interested 1965 01:30:56,200 --> 01:30:58,840 Speaker 2: in a coach winning the press conference. But I think 1966 01:30:58,880 --> 01:31:02,280 Speaker 2: what makes I think, what made today unique for me 1967 01:31:03,840 --> 01:31:08,320 Speaker 2: and I would imagine for most who watched, attended, or listened, 1968 01:31:09,120 --> 01:31:13,760 Speaker 2: is it's a big deal if you get a head 1969 01:31:13,760 --> 01:31:16,240 Speaker 2: coaching job in a Big twelve or if you take 1970 01:31:16,280 --> 01:31:19,320 Speaker 2: a job that's one that you wanted because it's higher 1971 01:31:19,360 --> 01:31:22,920 Speaker 2: paying or higher profile, or gives you a chance to win. 1972 01:31:23,120 --> 01:31:25,880 Speaker 2: I got the sense that this was a little bit 1973 01:31:25,920 --> 01:31:26,639 Speaker 2: more than that. 1974 01:31:26,600 --> 01:31:28,000 Speaker 3: For Jared Calhoun. 1975 01:31:28,080 --> 01:31:31,280 Speaker 2: And it's corny and cliche perhaps to talk about it 1976 01:31:31,320 --> 01:31:34,439 Speaker 2: being a homecoming or him, you know, having his the 1977 01:31:35,360 --> 01:31:39,160 Speaker 2: Bearcat family wrap his arms around him. And I you know, 1978 01:31:39,240 --> 01:31:41,280 Speaker 2: you could roll your eyes when you hear things like 1979 01:31:41,479 --> 01:31:44,479 Speaker 2: dream job, and I think it's foolest to look at 1980 01:31:44,560 --> 01:31:46,800 Speaker 2: any higher as one who's going to be there for 1981 01:31:46,880 --> 01:31:47,479 Speaker 2: the rest. 1982 01:31:47,280 --> 01:31:48,080 Speaker 3: Of his career. 1983 01:31:48,600 --> 01:31:51,559 Speaker 2: But I got a true sense of this being a 1984 01:31:51,560 --> 01:31:55,040 Speaker 2: little bit more than just a step up in prestige 1985 01:31:55,120 --> 01:31:55,880 Speaker 2: or competition. 1986 01:31:56,840 --> 01:31:59,160 Speaker 3: This This felt like a really big deal for him. 1987 01:31:59,200 --> 01:32:01,200 Speaker 3: This felt like a really big deal for him because 1988 01:32:01,320 --> 01:32:06,000 Speaker 3: of where he's going. And I think. 1989 01:32:07,439 --> 01:32:12,559 Speaker 2: This is neither an excuse for or a criticism of 1990 01:32:12,840 --> 01:32:16,240 Speaker 2: Wes Miller or John Brannan. But I think there's a 1991 01:32:16,320 --> 01:32:18,519 Speaker 2: couple of things that work in Jared Calhoun's favor, and 1992 01:32:18,560 --> 01:32:23,080 Speaker 2: one of them is Jared Calhoun seems to be universally embraced, 1993 01:32:24,160 --> 01:32:27,719 Speaker 2: and I don't think that was the case with Wes Miller. 1994 01:32:28,200 --> 01:32:30,120 Speaker 2: I don't think that was the case with John Brannon, 1995 01:32:30,880 --> 01:32:33,880 Speaker 2: and I think when it came to both, perhaps for 1996 01:32:34,160 --> 01:32:39,160 Speaker 2: very understandable reasons, there was more chatter about who wasn't 1997 01:32:39,240 --> 01:32:43,479 Speaker 2: hired and who was angry about why they didn't hire 1998 01:32:43,680 --> 01:32:48,479 Speaker 2: who wasn't hired than the coach himself. And that might 1999 01:32:48,520 --> 01:32:51,799 Speaker 2: not have been a huge barrier for the coach having success, 2000 01:32:51,840 --> 01:32:55,760 Speaker 2: but it wasn't helpful. It didn't feel like the environment 2001 01:32:56,040 --> 01:33:01,600 Speaker 2: was completely welcoming, and I do think Wes in particular 2002 01:33:01,800 --> 01:33:05,400 Speaker 2: did the best he could to kind of extend olive 2003 01:33:05,400 --> 01:33:09,680 Speaker 2: branches and repair the relationship that was maybe not what 2004 01:33:09,800 --> 01:33:11,960 Speaker 2: it should have been between the program itself and some 2005 01:33:12,040 --> 01:33:16,880 Speaker 2: former players. This felt like a homecoming. This feels like 2006 01:33:17,520 --> 01:33:20,600 Speaker 2: they've hired one of their own. Does that guarantee success, 2007 01:33:20,640 --> 01:33:24,320 Speaker 2: of course not, But I do feel like because of that, 2008 01:33:25,400 --> 01:33:28,519 Speaker 2: because of the timing of this, because of having a 2009 01:33:28,600 --> 01:33:32,800 Speaker 2: GM in place already which helps, I do feel like 2010 01:33:32,840 --> 01:33:38,599 Speaker 2: there's a clearer runway for Jared Calhoun to have short 2011 01:33:38,680 --> 01:33:40,519 Speaker 2: term success again. 2012 01:33:40,600 --> 01:33:43,439 Speaker 3: Man, we'll see. You gotta get players. 2013 01:33:43,439 --> 01:33:46,559 Speaker 2: You're competing in top to bottom the toughest basketball league 2014 01:33:46,600 --> 01:33:49,840 Speaker 2: in the country, in my opinion, you gotta have money 2015 01:33:49,840 --> 01:33:52,000 Speaker 2: at your disposal. I think that The one thing Jared 2016 01:33:52,040 --> 01:33:54,360 Speaker 2: Calhoun went out of his way to point out was, look, 2017 01:33:54,400 --> 01:33:56,759 Speaker 2: we had a lot of success without the most amount 2018 01:33:56,760 --> 01:34:01,400 Speaker 2: of resources. They're gonna have more resources here. Time will tell, 2019 01:34:01,439 --> 01:34:05,240 Speaker 2: but it does. I've said this often that one of 2020 01:34:05,280 --> 01:34:07,080 Speaker 2: the frustrating things about the way the last couple of 2021 01:34:07,120 --> 01:34:10,400 Speaker 2: years is unfolded is that we've set the bar really low. 2022 01:34:10,479 --> 01:34:12,880 Speaker 2: And that's no knock on anybody, but for Wes Miller, 2023 01:34:12,920 --> 01:34:14,920 Speaker 2: the last couple of years it's been can. 2024 01:34:14,720 --> 01:34:15,639 Speaker 3: You get to the tournament? 2025 01:34:16,520 --> 01:34:20,599 Speaker 2: And like, the objective for everybody, for fans and coaches, 2026 01:34:20,680 --> 01:34:23,120 Speaker 2: is for the bar to be one day like can 2027 01:34:23,160 --> 01:34:25,560 Speaker 2: you win the Big twelve? Can you advance in the 2028 01:34:25,640 --> 01:34:28,959 Speaker 2: NCAA tournament? And I feel like in the short term, 2029 01:34:29,840 --> 01:34:33,559 Speaker 2: the conditions are better for the coach to clear that 2030 01:34:33,640 --> 01:34:38,799 Speaker 2: first bar. Hopefully he does. We will see. I interviewed 2031 01:34:38,880 --> 01:34:41,519 Speaker 2: John Cunningham today. You'll hear that conversation in just a 2032 01:34:41,520 --> 01:34:45,560 Speaker 2: couple of minutes. Reds and Red Sox tomorrow. Most interesting 2033 01:34:45,640 --> 01:34:49,840 Speaker 2: and exciting thing about this team for me is two, three, four, 2034 01:34:50,000 --> 01:34:52,679 Speaker 2: five in the batting order. I and I'll look here, 2035 01:34:53,040 --> 01:34:57,879 Speaker 2: we've been busy. I have not seen an official starting 2036 01:34:57,920 --> 01:35:04,360 Speaker 2: lineup against Garrett Crochet tomorrow. But look, man, you talk 2037 01:35:04,400 --> 01:35:06,400 Speaker 2: about taking things with a grain of salt, Do it 2038 01:35:06,439 --> 01:35:09,240 Speaker 2: with Matt McClain's numbers. Do it with South Stewart's numbers. 2039 01:35:09,240 --> 01:35:13,360 Speaker 2: But I I think if if you, if you, if you, 2040 01:35:13,640 --> 01:35:16,640 Speaker 2: if you get some encouragement from the way McLean and 2041 01:35:16,720 --> 01:35:18,880 Speaker 2: Stewart performed in the spring, and if you believe that 2042 01:35:18,920 --> 01:35:22,479 Speaker 2: I yohaneus Warez will provide a burst of pop, And 2043 01:35:22,520 --> 01:35:24,880 Speaker 2: if you believe that a healthy Elie Dela Cruz has 2044 01:35:24,920 --> 01:35:26,800 Speaker 2: a chance still to be one of the best and 2045 01:35:26,920 --> 01:35:30,519 Speaker 2: most dynamic players in baseball, then I think you have 2046 01:35:30,560 --> 01:35:32,920 Speaker 2: a lot of excitement over what they can do two, three, four, 2047 01:35:33,080 --> 01:35:35,280 Speaker 2: five in the batting order. I think it's gonna be 2048 01:35:35,280 --> 01:35:39,520 Speaker 2: an interesting test early. Nick Kral prioritized the bullpen. Bullpen's 2049 01:35:39,560 --> 01:35:42,360 Speaker 2: are always tested early in the season because starters don't 2050 01:35:42,400 --> 01:35:45,439 Speaker 2: go as long. They don't have Hunter Green at the outset. 2051 01:35:45,760 --> 01:35:48,640 Speaker 2: They're not gonna have Nicko Lodolo. You are gonna be 2052 01:35:48,680 --> 01:35:51,200 Speaker 2: giving starters innings to a lot of guys who don't 2053 01:35:51,240 --> 01:35:53,760 Speaker 2: have a ton of experience. Oh and they don't have 2054 01:35:53,920 --> 01:35:58,320 Speaker 2: Caleb Ferguson. Can the bullpen as constructed as it is 2055 01:35:59,200 --> 01:36:02,120 Speaker 2: rise to the ACA early in the season, and I 2056 01:36:02,200 --> 01:36:05,439 Speaker 2: talked about this with Sam Lekuir and with Tommy Thrall. Today, 2057 01:36:06,080 --> 01:36:09,200 Speaker 2: can Connor Phillips, who didn't have a great spring, show 2058 01:36:09,240 --> 01:36:11,400 Speaker 2: the form we saw from him late last season that 2059 01:36:11,479 --> 01:36:13,679 Speaker 2: made a lot of us think one day he could 2060 01:36:13,720 --> 01:36:16,160 Speaker 2: be the closer. The other piece of news over the 2061 01:36:16,240 --> 01:36:19,880 Speaker 2: last twenty four hours, Bengals made Joe Flacco available today, 2062 01:36:19,960 --> 01:36:21,240 Speaker 2: kind of reintroduced him. 2063 01:36:21,360 --> 01:36:23,160 Speaker 3: Number One, cool, awesome. 2064 01:36:23,600 --> 01:36:25,479 Speaker 2: If you have to put Joe Flaccu in the game, 2065 01:36:25,600 --> 01:36:29,479 Speaker 2: your offense can function. Two, Never call him cheat six 2066 01:36:29,560 --> 01:36:32,680 Speaker 2: million dollars for a quarterback. Three you can't help but 2067 01:36:32,760 --> 01:36:37,000 Speaker 2: do this. This is not Joe Flacco's fault. Where's the linebacker? 2068 01:36:37,800 --> 01:36:40,400 Speaker 2: My interview with John Cunningham Next with the Cincinnati Loggerhouse 2069 01:36:40,439 --> 01:36:42,680 Speaker 2: on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports. 2070 01:36:42,439 --> 01:36:49,320 Speaker 9: Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. It's available right now on 2087 01:37:41,000 --> 01:37:42,479 Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. 2088 01:37:42,600 --> 01:37:43,759 Speaker 3: After I talked with. 2089 01:37:44,240 --> 01:37:47,920 Speaker 2: The new head coach of the UC men's basketball program, 2090 01:37:48,360 --> 01:37:51,679 Speaker 2: I chatted with the guy who hired him, Director of Athletics, 2091 01:37:51,760 --> 01:37:55,320 Speaker 2: John Cunningham. Let's start with this, and this may sound 2092 01:37:55,400 --> 01:37:57,840 Speaker 2: like sort of a dumb question. What is a day 2093 01:37:57,960 --> 01:38:01,000 Speaker 2: like this a coaching announcement? When you have former players, 2094 01:38:01,040 --> 01:38:03,040 Speaker 2: when you have bear Cat Royalty, when you have Bob 2095 01:38:03,120 --> 01:38:05,240 Speaker 2: Huggins here, when you have fans who show up at 2096 01:38:05,240 --> 01:38:08,439 Speaker 2: one o'clock on a Wednesday afternoon, what's a day like 2097 01:38:08,560 --> 01:38:09,519 Speaker 2: this like for you? 2098 01:38:10,479 --> 01:38:14,080 Speaker 21: It's obviously busy, but but what I love about it 2099 01:38:14,120 --> 01:38:18,120 Speaker 21: is it is a celebration of Bearcat basketball, and you 2100 01:38:18,160 --> 01:38:22,120 Speaker 21: get a chance to thank so many people around the program, 2101 01:38:22,160 --> 01:38:25,560 Speaker 21: from your supporters to your you know, your your university 2102 01:38:25,640 --> 01:38:29,920 Speaker 21: president and all your staff and obviously just introduce somebody 2103 01:38:29,920 --> 01:38:32,920 Speaker 21: that's that's pretty dynamic to to your fan base and 2104 01:38:33,240 --> 01:38:35,679 Speaker 21: get them excited. So it's a lot of fun. It's 2105 01:38:35,680 --> 01:38:38,560 Speaker 21: one of those great days. And was so excited to 2106 01:38:39,000 --> 01:38:41,439 Speaker 21: do it. I'm gonna sleep well tonight, but it was 2107 01:38:41,680 --> 01:38:45,680 Speaker 21: a great day. What made this hiring process unique. 2108 01:38:47,160 --> 01:38:48,080 Speaker 6: The timing. 2109 01:38:48,160 --> 01:38:49,960 Speaker 21: Obviously, you don't have a lot of time in this 2110 01:38:50,080 --> 01:38:53,000 Speaker 21: day of the portal. You know, the portal doesn't technically 2111 01:38:53,000 --> 01:38:55,799 Speaker 21: open up until April, but we all know some decisions 2112 01:38:55,800 --> 01:38:57,559 Speaker 21: are being made, and so you've got to get somebody 2113 01:38:57,600 --> 01:38:59,800 Speaker 21: here and going, and so we knew that that was 2114 01:38:59,800 --> 01:39:01,799 Speaker 21: good to be really important. The other the other interesting 2115 01:39:01,880 --> 01:39:05,439 Speaker 21: thing here is that we really were targeting coach calahu 2116 01:39:06,000 --> 01:39:09,599 Speaker 21: and so, you know, you're trying to land that plane, 2117 01:39:10,320 --> 01:39:12,200 Speaker 21: you always have a plan B. But he was He 2118 01:39:12,320 --> 01:39:15,320 Speaker 21: was by far and away plan A, and so that 2119 01:39:15,479 --> 01:39:17,880 Speaker 21: was a little bit unique, and so we were you know, 2120 01:39:17,960 --> 01:39:20,479 Speaker 21: he wanted to be here, he said it. This was 2121 01:39:20,520 --> 01:39:22,479 Speaker 21: a job that he had always identified as one that 2122 01:39:22,520 --> 01:39:24,840 Speaker 21: he would he would want to jump at and we 2123 01:39:24,880 --> 01:39:27,160 Speaker 21: wanted him here, and so it was nice that they 2124 01:39:27,320 --> 01:39:29,559 Speaker 21: they came together and the timing worked. 2125 01:39:29,800 --> 01:39:31,920 Speaker 2: You targeted him, but there had to be a moment 2126 01:39:31,960 --> 01:39:34,479 Speaker 2: where you're thinking, Okay, that's the guy that I want. 2127 01:39:34,840 --> 01:39:36,880 Speaker 2: What were the things that led you to go, Okay, 2128 01:39:37,080 --> 01:39:38,280 Speaker 2: that's our number one choice. 2129 01:39:39,040 --> 01:39:39,240 Speaker 3: Yeah. 2130 01:39:39,479 --> 01:39:41,880 Speaker 21: I think it went back to conversations I had with 2131 01:39:41,960 --> 01:39:45,320 Speaker 21: basketball people about him as a basketball coach, you know, 2132 01:39:45,400 --> 01:39:49,360 Speaker 21: I mean, obviously his connections to Ohio and Cincinnati were 2133 01:39:49,360 --> 01:39:51,920 Speaker 21: almost the cherry on top, but we were trying to 2134 01:39:51,920 --> 01:39:55,559 Speaker 21: find the best basketball coach, and specifically somebody that could 2135 01:39:55,560 --> 01:39:58,800 Speaker 21: really scheme in the Big twelve against some of the 2136 01:39:58,840 --> 01:40:02,120 Speaker 21: best coaches in the country and really get after it offensively, 2137 01:40:03,080 --> 01:40:05,840 Speaker 21: put the ball in the hole. And then also, you know, 2138 01:40:06,120 --> 01:40:08,840 Speaker 21: kind of have that that program identity that that I 2139 01:40:08,880 --> 01:40:10,840 Speaker 21: talked about in the in the press conference, which is 2140 01:40:10,880 --> 01:40:16,519 Speaker 21: I think toughness, family, the right guys, playing the right way. 2141 01:40:16,560 --> 01:40:20,559 Speaker 2: He mentioned mc cronin multiple times. How cool is it 2142 01:40:20,600 --> 01:40:24,519 Speaker 2: to have somebody like that across the country who still 2143 01:40:24,560 --> 01:40:27,920 Speaker 2: has such care and concern for the university, who's helping 2144 01:40:28,000 --> 01:40:32,240 Speaker 2: you and helping coach Calhoun in coming together for this marriage. 2145 01:40:32,320 --> 01:40:33,719 Speaker 6: It's so unique. It doesn't happen. 2146 01:40:34,320 --> 01:40:36,920 Speaker 21: And you know, I've I've had a chance to get 2147 01:40:36,920 --> 01:40:40,000 Speaker 21: to know coach cronin a little bit. He just loves 2148 01:40:40,680 --> 01:40:44,400 Speaker 21: the city of Cincinnati and obviously his dad still comes 2149 01:40:44,400 --> 01:40:47,080 Speaker 21: to the games, and he just has a passion for 2150 01:40:47,160 --> 01:40:49,760 Speaker 21: this place and it and it never left when when 2151 01:40:49,760 --> 01:40:53,080 Speaker 21: he went to la and so you didn't have to 2152 01:40:53,120 --> 01:40:56,240 Speaker 21: give his time or his thoughts or try. 2153 01:40:56,080 --> 01:40:58,000 Speaker 6: To help in any way, and he did and that 2154 01:40:58,080 --> 01:40:58,679 Speaker 6: means a lot. 2155 01:40:59,520 --> 01:41:02,120 Speaker 21: And and in this city should be thankful to have 2156 01:41:02,240 --> 01:41:05,439 Speaker 21: somebody like that that still gives back in that way. 2157 01:41:05,640 --> 01:41:08,360 Speaker 2: Decision is made to have a coaching change, and then 2158 01:41:08,400 --> 01:41:11,439 Speaker 2: the decision is made to hire a specific coach. In between, 2159 01:41:11,520 --> 01:41:14,679 Speaker 2: you have players who are going to have options. What's 2160 01:41:14,720 --> 01:41:17,879 Speaker 2: the communication like between yourself, your staff and the players 2161 01:41:17,920 --> 01:41:20,320 Speaker 2: who I'm sure wanted to know as quickly as possible 2162 01:41:20,360 --> 01:41:21,439 Speaker 2: who their head coach was going to be. 2163 01:41:22,120 --> 01:41:24,240 Speaker 21: Yeah, you know, we met with them obviously, and I 2164 01:41:24,560 --> 01:41:26,000 Speaker 21: told him, I said, it's going to it's going to 2165 01:41:26,040 --> 01:41:27,840 Speaker 21: feel like weeks, it's going to be days. Because we 2166 01:41:27,920 --> 01:41:30,439 Speaker 21: knew that we had to move quickly before we had 2167 01:41:30,479 --> 01:41:32,880 Speaker 21: a new coach, and I said, you know, number one, 2168 01:41:32,920 --> 01:41:36,080 Speaker 21: all of you individually will have your own situation, in 2169 01:41:36,120 --> 01:41:38,080 Speaker 21: your own circumstances, and so we want to know what 2170 01:41:38,120 --> 01:41:42,120 Speaker 21: those circumstances are if you have eligibility coming back. And 2171 01:41:42,200 --> 01:41:45,240 Speaker 21: then also, you know, take care. They had spring break, 2172 01:41:45,280 --> 01:41:47,479 Speaker 21: so we said, go and enjoy spring break. Take a breath. 2173 01:41:47,640 --> 01:41:49,679 Speaker 21: You know this is a long season. Take a breath, 2174 01:41:50,240 --> 01:41:53,240 Speaker 21: come back, get done what you need to academically to 2175 01:41:53,240 --> 01:41:56,080 Speaker 21: finish off, and we'll be here for you. Mike Rayfeld, 2176 01:41:56,080 --> 01:41:57,960 Speaker 21: our strength coach, will be here for you if you 2177 01:41:57,960 --> 01:42:00,760 Speaker 21: want to get a workout in. Obviously, obviously we had 2178 01:42:01,320 --> 01:42:04,840 Speaker 21: a surgery or two and some training staff around to 2179 01:42:04,880 --> 01:42:07,639 Speaker 21: help the players, but just really focus in on them 2180 01:42:07,720 --> 01:42:10,200 Speaker 21: and their individual circumstances. And then now we know we 2181 01:42:10,280 --> 01:42:12,360 Speaker 21: have that coach in place, he gets to start to 2182 01:42:12,360 --> 01:42:13,360 Speaker 21: build that relationship. 2183 01:42:14,720 --> 01:42:17,599 Speaker 2: So John Cunningham from our earlier today, just a few 2184 01:42:17,600 --> 01:42:22,519 Speaker 2: moments after the big introductory press conference where Jared Calhoun 2185 01:42:22,760 --> 01:42:26,800 Speaker 2: was formally named the men's basketball head coach at the 2186 01:42:26,920 --> 01:42:30,280 Speaker 2: University of Cincinnati, we've got a few more minutes here 2187 01:42:30,320 --> 01:42:34,000 Speaker 2: at the Cincinnati Loggerhouse. We thank them for having us 2188 01:42:34,280 --> 01:42:38,120 Speaker 2: yet again, Tony Austin and I are together tomorrow from 2189 01:42:38,400 --> 01:42:42,360 Speaker 2: noon to three on ESPN fifteen thirty, So we are 2190 01:42:42,400 --> 01:42:46,040 Speaker 2: definitely looking forward to that, and we'll preview the season 2191 01:42:46,120 --> 01:42:48,400 Speaker 2: from every conceivable angle. 2192 01:42:49,920 --> 01:42:51,719 Speaker 3: I think the Reds are gonna win eighty three games. 2193 01:42:52,920 --> 01:42:54,599 Speaker 2: I don't know that that's going to be good enough 2194 01:42:54,600 --> 01:42:57,160 Speaker 2: to get the team to the postseason. Don't believe it's 2195 01:42:57,200 --> 01:42:58,720 Speaker 2: going to be good enough for this team to win 2196 01:42:58,760 --> 01:43:02,160 Speaker 2: the National League Central. I don't think this team is 2197 01:43:02,200 --> 01:43:04,760 Speaker 2: worse than last season. Then we talked about this a 2198 01:43:04,760 --> 01:43:10,920 Speaker 2: little bit yesterday. The prevailing the prevailing prediction, The consensus 2199 01:43:11,200 --> 01:43:12,680 Speaker 2: is that the Reds are going to be like a 2200 01:43:12,720 --> 01:43:15,559 Speaker 2: seventy seven or seventy eight win team that would be 2201 01:43:15,600 --> 01:43:16,599 Speaker 2: worse than last year. 2202 01:43:17,400 --> 01:43:19,679 Speaker 3: I don't think this team is worse. 2203 01:43:20,479 --> 01:43:25,160 Speaker 2: I'm not sure how markedly better they are, but we'll 2204 01:43:25,200 --> 01:43:26,280 Speaker 2: see starting tomorrow. 2205 01:43:26,680 --> 01:43:27,519 Speaker 3: Can't wait for it. 2206 01:43:27,760 --> 01:43:33,200 Speaker 2: Andrew Abbott, Garrett Crochet, first pitch tomorrow at four ten, 2207 01:43:33,439 --> 01:43:37,400 Speaker 2: John John and Friends will be broadcasting from just outside 2208 01:43:37,400 --> 01:43:41,280 Speaker 2: here the opening day watch party, and that'll be a 2209 01:43:41,280 --> 01:43:43,519 Speaker 2: lot of fun.
