But let's 0:04:11.520 --> 0:04:13.880 jump back to the ten Commandments. First of all, we've 0:04:13.880 --> 0:04:18.160 got to put this into context. In my country. In 0:04:18.240 --> 0:04:20.919 the US, we talk a lot about the importance of 0:04:20.920 --> 0:04:24.000 the Ten Commandments, and there's debate whether we should have 0:04:24.040 --> 0:04:27.560 ten commandments and schools and ten commandments in courtrooms and 0:04:27.680 --> 0:04:32.320 all of those things. And I do believe the Ten 0:04:32.360 --> 0:04:35.760 Commandments give us an idea of what pleases and displeases God. 0:04:36.279 --> 0:04:40.840 So leaving the politics out of it for a moment, 0:04:40.920 --> 0:04:43.240 whether it's appropriate or not to put it in schools 0:04:43.279 --> 0:04:46.560 and courts and things like that, let's just look at 0:04:46.600 --> 0:04:50.200 what these were four and then how they apply to 0:04:50.320 --> 0:04:54.560 us as predominantly gentile Christians. So most of the people 0:04:54.600 --> 0:04:58.560 who listen to me here are not Jewish. And we 0:04:58.640 --> 0:05:02.640 have to remember that at some point when the Church 0:05:03.480 --> 0:05:07.120 was given a sign from God that it was okay 0:05:07.160 --> 0:05:10.720 to be gentile and Christian. We're talking about Acts ten. 0:05:10.960 --> 0:05:12.600 You can go back to the study we did on 0:05:12.720 --> 0:05:17.320 Acts to read more about that. They said you didn't 0:05:17.440 --> 0:05:21.200 have to be Jewish to be Christian. They understood that 0:05:21.279 --> 0:05:28.840 God was revealed to gentiles, and they basically exempted gentiles 0:05:29.120 --> 0:05:33.400 from whole portions of the levitical law, which I think 0:05:33.440 --> 0:05:37.240 we're going to get to here coming up. But the 0:05:37.320 --> 0:05:40.120 thing I need you to know is that basically the 0:05:40.240 --> 0:05:45.040 Church understood at that time and sense that you don't 0:05:45.040 --> 0:05:47.279 have to be Jewish to be Christian, and therefore a 0:05:47.320 --> 0:05:51.120 lot of the laws may not apply. Now. There was 0:05:51.240 --> 0:05:57.080 no specific instructions from the Council of Jerusalem when they 0:05:57.320 --> 0:06:00.440 tried to figure out what gentiles needed to do that 0:06:00.520 --> 0:06:03.400 we needed to follow the Ten Commandments. That was not 0:06:04.320 --> 0:06:06.400 the one rule they came up with. They came up 0:06:06.440 --> 0:06:09.080 with the rule is don't eat meat, sacrifice to idols. 0:06:10.680 --> 0:06:14.520 I don't think that means that these are not valid 0:06:14.839 --> 0:06:17.280 or that these are not still things that please God 0:06:17.360 --> 0:06:22.800 or displease God. But just remember that context here is 0:06:23.800 --> 0:06:27.800 we're saved by grace through Jesus, and not by doing 0:06:27.960 --> 0:06:32.679 or even not damned by not doing these. But these 0:06:32.720 --> 0:06:37.119 are the things that please God. And so we start 0:06:37.160 --> 0:06:38.720 with I'm the Lord your God that brought you out 0:06:38.760 --> 0:06:40.560 of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall 0:06:40.600 --> 0:06:43.279 have no other gods before me. That is the most 0:06:43.320 --> 0:06:45.839 important one, and that is the one that we have 0:06:45.920 --> 0:06:49.760 the most trouble with. Here in the Book of Exodus 0:06:50.240 --> 0:06:55.239 and in the Bible, and probably in our lives, we 0:06:55.400 --> 0:06:58.640 can easily put other things before God. In our lives. 0:06:58.720 --> 0:07:01.560 It's not likely to be an idol. It's not likely 0:07:01.640 --> 0:07:04.640 to be a ball or an asher a pull, as 0:07:04.680 --> 0:07:07.360 it's going to be with the Jewish people who start 0:07:07.400 --> 0:07:09.760 interacting too much with their neighbors once they come in 0:07:09.800 --> 0:07:13.640 the Promised Land. But it can easily be money or 0:07:14.640 --> 0:07:20.280 fame or other things that get more important. How people 0:07:20.360 --> 0:07:23.680 see us can be more important. That can become a 0:07:23.720 --> 0:07:28.240 god to us. So God number one in all things 0:07:28.720 --> 0:07:33.000 is the first one. No other gods before me, not 0:07:33.360 --> 0:07:36.720 just religions and things like that. But nothing else is 0:07:36.800 --> 0:07:40.240 more important. Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, 0:07:40.600 --> 0:07:45.880 your mind, your strength. Okay, and then you shall not 0:07:45.960 --> 0:07:48.600 make yourself an image in the form of anything in 0:07:48.640 --> 0:07:51.160 heaven above or on the earth below. You should not 0:07:51.200 --> 0:07:53.200 about in and worship them for the Lord your God. 0:07:53.200 --> 0:07:55.400 I'm jealous God. So that's really we can say that 0:07:55.600 --> 0:07:59.040 kind of part of that first one. Here. No graven images. 0:07:59.520 --> 0:08:01.600 How you know these? Remember they weren't numbered in the 0:08:01.680 --> 0:08:04.320 original version here, so you might group them differently than 0:08:04.360 --> 0:08:08.680 I would. Doesn't really matter. The numbers are not important. 0:08:09.200 --> 0:08:12.800 The ten is not important in the Ten Commandments, is 0:08:12.880 --> 0:08:17.040 not in the text. It's something we added later, So 0:08:17.080 --> 0:08:19.840 don't get hung up on it because it's not important. 0:08:20.280 --> 0:08:22.920 But what we learn from here is that God doesn't 0:08:22.960 --> 0:08:25.560 want us worshiping other gods, right, doesn't want us worshiping 0:08:25.560 --> 0:08:30.040 other things either. Right, You can't make for yourself. Oh, 0:08:30.120 --> 0:08:33.719 let's say a golden calf, just in case that might 0:08:33.760 --> 0:08:37.280 come up here in the future and worship it as 0:08:37.320 --> 0:08:39.640 a god, because that would be wrong. That would be 0:08:39.640 --> 0:08:42.680 putting something else before God. Now we talk all about 0:08:42.760 --> 0:08:46.000 these graven images things this that you can't make an 0:08:46.040 --> 0:08:48.079 image in the form of anything in heaven above or 0:08:48.120 --> 0:08:52.320 earth below. I have drawn pictures of my house, even 0:08:52.360 --> 0:08:56.760 in kindergarten. I'm not concerned about that offending God, even 0:08:56.800 --> 0:08:59.360 though that is an image of something on earth beneath, 0:08:59.679 --> 0:09:03.160 because really the point of this is you shall not 0:09:03.200 --> 0:09:05.160 bow down to worship them for either Lord your God. 0:09:05.160 --> 0:09:07.160 I'm a jealous God, right, That is the whole point 0:09:07.160 --> 0:09:11.160 of this. Is no other gods, which is why we 0:09:11.240 --> 0:09:16.640 lump this as part of that first commandment. And then 0:09:16.640 --> 0:09:19.080 you shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, 0:09:19.120 --> 0:09:21.719 for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses 0:09:21.800 --> 0:09:26.720 his name. This one, I think is more subtle and 0:09:26.800 --> 0:09:31.600 more dangerous and more confusing than we take it to be. 0:09:32.800 --> 0:09:35.640 So we talk about it as if it means I 0:09:35.720 --> 0:09:39.520 shouldn't use Jesus name, for instance, as a swear word. Well, 0:09:39.520 --> 0:09:43.120 I don't think you should, but I think it means 0:09:43.440 --> 0:09:47.840 more than that. Let's say we have two people, one 0:09:47.880 --> 0:09:52.680 young man who is cursing and he is using Jesus 0:09:52.760 --> 0:09:55.680 as a swear word. Don't think that that pleases God. 0:09:56.760 --> 0:10:01.880 And somebody else who is a minister or a religion 0:10:02.200 --> 0:10:11.439 person who is saying things that are wrong and misleading 0:10:11.880 --> 0:10:15.240 and sending people in the wrong direction away from God. 0:10:15.720 --> 0:10:18.680 And says that I am telling you this in the 0:10:18.760 --> 0:10:22.160 name of Jesus and telling you this because God revealed 0:10:22.200 --> 0:10:25.800 it to me. That would also be misusing the name 0:10:25.840 --> 0:10:28.760 of the Lord. Which of those do you think would 0:10:28.800 --> 0:10:33.439 be more important to God? I don't think it's just 0:10:33.559 --> 0:10:35.920 that swearing thing. I think when we think of this 0:10:36.480 --> 0:10:41.520 as swearing, we're really not getting the heart of the matter. Here. 0:10:43.080 --> 0:10:45.120 Would I misuse the name of the Lord? If I 0:10:45.240 --> 0:10:48.040 call in the name of the Lord, I present something 0:10:48.720 --> 0:10:52.960 as being of God's authority, the name of somebody meant 0:10:52.960 --> 0:10:56.200 their authority and power. Think of it as if God 0:10:56.240 --> 0:10:59.880 were a king. Okay, so you've got rules against miss 0:11:00.200 --> 0:11:02.400 using the name of the king. Okay, well, certainly that's 0:11:02.440 --> 0:11:05.600 going to cover things like if I say, you know, 0:11:05.800 --> 0:11:08.000 the King such and such should go to hell, that 0:11:08.040 --> 0:11:11.880 would probably get me in trouble. But if I present 0:11:11.960 --> 0:11:14.400 myself as an ambassador to the king and I say 0:11:14.440 --> 0:11:18.880 the King wants you to do this, and you do that, 0:11:19.120 --> 0:11:22.160 and then you find out that the King didn't say that, 0:11:22.160 --> 0:11:25.760 that's going to get me in all sorts of trouble. 0:11:26.440 --> 0:11:31.880 That's treason. That's not a you get lashed kind of offense. 0:11:31.960 --> 0:11:34.600 Even in the Middle Ages. That's a you get strung 0:11:34.679 --> 0:11:37.800 up kind of offense. So which of those do you 0:11:37.840 --> 0:11:41.840 think is more important to God? Remember the sap day 0:11:41.880 --> 0:11:43.520 and keep it holy. Here's another one. We have some 0:11:43.600 --> 0:11:48.640 trouble with what does it mean to keep the Sabbath? Now? 0:11:48.800 --> 0:11:53.800 The Jewish scholars spend a lot of time thinking about this, 0:11:54.320 --> 0:11:56.840 And if you have a friend who is conservative Jewish, 0:11:57.480 --> 0:12:01.679 then they have rules that have been handed down to 0:12:01.720 --> 0:12:04.679 them in terms of light switches that can't be turned 0:12:04.720 --> 0:12:08.440 on or off on Saturday, the Sabbath. And you might 0:12:08.520 --> 0:12:13.880 have these days things that go into automatic mode on 0:12:13.920 --> 0:12:16.360 the Sabbath, like elevators that go up and down because 0:12:16.400 --> 0:12:18.560 nobody is allowed to push a button to call them. 0:12:19.200 --> 0:12:24.040 You might see these in Israel or someplace like that. Okay, 0:12:24.440 --> 0:12:29.400 So Jesus had some trouble in fact with how people 0:12:29.559 --> 0:12:33.520 understood the Sabbath, and we have to remember that when 0:12:33.520 --> 0:12:36.920 we look at this, because what he said was the 0:12:37.000 --> 0:12:41.400 Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 0:12:42.200 --> 0:12:44.360 I'm say it again because Jesus said it. So it's 0:12:44.400 --> 0:12:48.120 important the Sabbath was made for man, not man for 0:12:48.200 --> 0:12:51.960 the Sabbath. And so what he was saying is the 0:12:52.000 --> 0:12:57.160 big point of this is that you need rest. That 0:12:57.280 --> 0:13:01.319 Sabbath is something that is good for you. So all 0:13:01.360 --> 0:13:03.600 those little rules about what you can and you cannot 0:13:03.600 --> 0:13:07.880 do might be missing the point. It's not saying that 0:13:07.920 --> 0:13:10.760 you should do everything on the Sabbath, but that you 0:13:10.880 --> 0:13:16.520 need rest. Now, Christians started celebrating on Sunday and not Saturday, 0:13:17.040 --> 0:13:20.760 and that was their holy day because Jesus rose from 0:13:20.760 --> 0:13:25.360 the dead on Sunday. Were they violating the Sabbath by 0:13:25.480 --> 0:13:29.520 not worshiping on Saturday, Well, they didn't think so. They 0:13:29.520 --> 0:13:33.040 were still getting rest. They were still worshiping God. And 0:13:33.120 --> 0:13:38.199 that is the heart of this commandment, is that we 0:13:38.280 --> 0:13:42.520 worship God. We set aside time to worship God, and 0:13:42.559 --> 0:13:47.520 that we also rest, that we take a break. We 0:13:47.640 --> 0:13:51.600 need breaks. It's something that we need and God knows, 0:13:52.280 --> 0:13:57.800 and so that think of this commandment that way. The 0:13:57.800 --> 0:14:01.200 next one, I think is a little more obvious, as 0:14:01.320 --> 0:14:03.000 are some of the rest of them. Honor your father 0:14:03.040 --> 0:14:05.400 and your mothers so you'll live long in the land 0:14:05.440 --> 0:14:09.400 the Lord is giving you. So treat your parents with 0:14:09.480 --> 0:14:13.400 the respect they deserve. Now that's a tricky one because 0:14:13.400 --> 0:14:17.560 you may think they don't deserve your respect. But because 0:14:17.600 --> 0:14:23.040 they are your parents, they deserve some respect, and that's it. Period. 0:14:24.480 --> 0:14:29.080 You shall not murder. That one we think is fairly obvious, 0:14:29.160 --> 0:14:34.960 although Jesus said, remember, if you hate your brother, you're 0:14:34.960 --> 0:14:39.000 really already slipped into murder. Do not commit adultery. If 0:14:39.000 --> 0:14:40.960 you look at a woman with lust, Jesus said, you've 0:14:41.000 --> 0:14:45.440 already committed adultery. So he made some of these more difficult. 0:14:46.120 --> 0:14:49.760 But remember the point of these is a lot of 0:14:49.760 --> 0:14:54.360 the things from twelve down have to do with not 0:14:54.600 --> 0:14:57.240 our relationship with God, but our relationship with one another, 0:14:57.400 --> 0:14:59.760 our relationship with the parents there in terms of honor, 0:14:59.800 --> 0:15:02.480 your and your mother, and then obviously your relationship with 0:15:02.520 --> 0:15:05.600 others is going to be affected if you're murdering, committing adultery, 0:15:05.640 --> 0:15:09.880 or stealing. Right, if I take stuff from you, you're 0:15:09.920 --> 0:15:11.800 not going to think as highly of me. We're going 0:15:11.880 --> 0:15:15.560 to break that relationship. If I pledge myself to be 0:15:15.640 --> 0:15:18.000 married and promise to be married for the rest of 0:15:18.000 --> 0:15:20.200 my life and then start sleeping with other women, I 0:15:20.240 --> 0:15:23.320 guarantee you it will affect my relationship with my wife. 0:15:23.920 --> 0:15:26.000 And I don't even mean if she knows about it. 0:15:26.160 --> 0:15:28.240 I mean it's good affect it anyway and not in 0:15:28.280 --> 0:15:32.800 a good way. You shall not give false testimony against 0:15:32.880 --> 0:15:38.800 your neighbor. Does this just mean in court? Could it 0:15:38.920 --> 0:15:42.480 also mean over the back fence when you're gossiping about somebody. 0:15:43.800 --> 0:15:47.880 Could it mean on social media when you're saying somebody 0:15:47.880 --> 0:15:50.000 did something and you really didn't even look it up 0:15:50.000 --> 0:15:52.040 to see if it was true and didn't spend any 0:15:52.080 --> 0:15:57.040 time on it. Isn't that also false testimony? Because who 0:15:57.080 --> 0:16:02.000 is my neighbor? Jesus drew that bound really wide when 0:16:02.000 --> 0:16:04.200 he was talking to a pharisee who wanted to know 0:16:04.240 --> 0:16:09.520 who wasn't his neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. 0:16:09.840 --> 0:16:12.120 You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or as male 0:16:12.200 --> 0:16:15.160 or female servant, or ox or donkey, or anything that 0:16:15.200 --> 0:16:19.880 belongs to your neighbor. There's a bunch of commandments in there, basically, 0:16:20.720 --> 0:16:24.040 be content with your stuff, with your life, with your lot, 0:16:25.400 --> 0:16:32.160 because living with covetness, jealousy, wanting what you have sometimes 0:16:32.240 --> 0:16:34.160 just because you have it. That's what it looks like 0:16:34.240 --> 0:16:36.800 when you're three, right, My favorite toy is whatever toy 0:16:36.920 --> 0:16:40.160 you've got, And sometimes as adults we act like three 0:16:40.240 --> 0:16:43.560 year olds. It's not great when you see it in 0:16:43.600 --> 0:16:46.000 a three year old. It is really, really, really not 0:16:46.080 --> 0:16:49.800 great when you see it in an adult. And covetness 0:16:50.000 --> 0:16:54.640 can also break community when I can't be happy for 0:16:54.760 --> 0:16:59.400 your success, whether it's because you won the spelling bee, 0:16:59.560 --> 0:17:03.840 or you got the promotion, or you got the new car, 0:17:03.920 --> 0:17:11.560 whatever it might be, that breaks the relationship and breaks community. 0:17:11.640 --> 0:17:13.840 When people saw thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet 0:17:13.840 --> 0:17:16.960 and saw the mountain, they trembled with fear. They basically say, 0:17:17.600 --> 0:17:20.480 I don't really want to hear ton again. Could you 0:17:20.760 --> 0:17:24.200 just be an intermediator for us, because this is scary stuff. 0:17:25.240 --> 0:17:28.359 They're standing remember as this is happening at the foot 0:17:28.400 --> 0:17:31.560 of the mountain Mount Sinai, and they don't want to 0:17:31.560 --> 0:17:37.880 do it again. And Moses said, God's you know, don't 0:17:37.920 --> 0:17:41.040 worry about it.
