Peter, however, got up and 0:01:40.720 --> 0:01:43.480 ran to the tomb. Now, Remember that in the 0:01:52.120 --> 0:01:56.240 chapters previous, as they're heading to Jerusalem, Jesus tells them, 0:01:56.280 --> 0:01:59.280 I think it's on three different occasions. What is going 0:01:59.320 --> 0:02:01.240 to happen? That he he's going to die, that he's 0:02:01.320 --> 0:02:05.320 going to rise again. But it made no sense to them, 0:02:05.680 --> 0:02:08.040 and it still makes no sense even when the women 0:02:08.120 --> 0:02:13.040 come back to the disciples and say that we ran 0:02:13.160 --> 0:02:16.960 into this beings. I don't know if they use the 0:02:16.960 --> 0:02:21.560 word angels. But these messengers, these people wearing these bright 0:02:21.720 --> 0:02:26.400 white clothing that's gleamed like lightning, that are telling us 0:02:26.400 --> 0:02:32.560 that Jesus isn't dead anymore. Now isn't dead anymore is 0:02:32.680 --> 0:02:35.679 one of those strange phrases that one does not get 0:02:35.720 --> 0:02:39.240 to say. It is not something that one normally uses 0:02:39.320 --> 0:02:43.000 when one is dead. One tends to stay dead. I 0:02:43.000 --> 0:02:46.520 thought it was interesting when I learned Spanish that there 0:02:46.520 --> 0:02:49.120 are two different words for to be, something that is 0:02:49.160 --> 0:02:53.560 temporary and something that is permanent. And oddly enough, in Spanish, 0:02:53.560 --> 0:02:56.800 when we say that you are dead using the word 0:02:56.919 --> 0:03:00.839 to be, you use the temporary form. And I think 0:03:00.880 --> 0:03:04.000 that's a great statement of faith here, that the belief 0:03:04.160 --> 0:03:08.360 in this temporariness of death. But it wasn't what these 0:03:08.440 --> 0:03:12.120 people believed. It wasn't what Mary and Mary Magdalene and 0:03:12.200 --> 0:03:16.560 Joanna believed. They came to the tomb on this Sunday 0:03:16.600 --> 0:03:21.760 morning to say goodbye, to anoint Jesus's body for burial. 0:03:22.120 --> 0:03:25.120 They didn't get a chance to do it on Friday 0:03:25.200 --> 0:03:28.480 night because it was the Sabbath and they weren't allowed 0:03:28.520 --> 0:03:31.280 to work on the Sabbath, and so as soon as 0:03:31.280 --> 0:03:34.880 the sun went down they had to stop this preparation 0:03:35.240 --> 0:03:38.000 of Jesus's body. But that is what they've come to 0:03:38.040 --> 0:03:42.560 do here. They've come to say goodbye in the appropriate 0:03:42.760 --> 0:03:46.400 fashion by anointing Jesus' body, but it's hard to do 0:03:47.040 --> 0:03:53.280 when there's no body. What they weren't expecting, even though 0:03:53.360 --> 0:03:56.800 Jesus had told them this would happen, is they weren't 0:03:56.800 --> 0:04:00.920 expecting the tomb to be open, to have these angels 0:04:00.920 --> 0:04:03.680 in it giving them a message. So they do what 0:04:03.840 --> 0:04:06.520 you should do, You run back and tell everybody else, 0:04:07.120 --> 0:04:12.119 and everybody else doesn't believe them. I always thought it's interesting. 0:04:12.160 --> 0:04:16.400 Of course, it's the everybody else who writes down this story. 0:04:16.480 --> 0:04:20.880 Later on, Luke goes and interviews people and creates his 0:04:21.560 --> 0:04:25.080 understanding of the story and writes this account. And the 0:04:25.160 --> 0:04:27.919 disciples are probably the ones who told him yeah, which 0:04:28.000 --> 0:04:31.480 they came back and we didn't believe them. It doesn't 0:04:31.480 --> 0:04:34.200 put them in the best light, but it's what happened. 0:04:35.960 --> 0:04:39.560 And Peter goes and runs to the tomb and sees 0:04:39.800 --> 0:04:41.920 the strips of lenin where there should be a body, 0:04:42.400 --> 0:04:47.680 and he still isn't sure what's going on, continuing on 0:04:47.680 --> 0:04:50.800 on the road to Ammeis. Now the same day two 0:04:50.880 --> 0:04:54.080 of them were going to a village called Amais, about 0:04:54.120 --> 0:04:57.480 seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other 0:04:57.600 --> 0:05:01.040 about everything that had happened, As they talked and discussed 0:05:01.080 --> 0:05:04.880 these things with each other, Jesus came up and walked 0:05:05.040 --> 0:05:08.520 along with them, but they were kept from recognizing him. 0:05:09.040 --> 0:05:11.120 He asked them, what are you discussing together as you 0:05:11.200 --> 0:05:14.960 walk along? They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, 0:05:15.040 --> 0:05:18.440 named Cleopus, asked him, are you the only one visiting 0:05:18.480 --> 0:05:21.680 Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened 0:05:21.760 --> 0:05:26.479 in these days? What things? He asked about Jesus of Nazareth, 0:05:26.520 --> 0:05:29.679 They replied, he was a prophet powerful in word, indeed 0:05:29.720 --> 0:05:32.600 before God and all the people. The chief priests and 0:05:32.640 --> 0:05:35.600 our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, 0:05:35.640 --> 0:05:38.680 and they crucified him. But we had hoped he was 0:05:38.720 --> 0:05:41.720 the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what 0:05:41.839 --> 0:05:43.960 is more, it is the third day since all this 0:05:44.040 --> 0:05:47.280 took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. 0:05:47.320 --> 0:05:50.080 They went to the tomb early this morning, but didn't 0:05:50.080 --> 0:05:52.600 find his body. They came and told us they had 0:05:52.640 --> 0:05:55.880 seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. 0:05:56.320 --> 0:05:58.359 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and 0:05:58.400 --> 0:06:01.479 found it just as the women had said, but they 0:06:01.520 --> 0:06:06.359 did not see Jesus. So Jesus is walking along with 0:06:06.440 --> 0:06:10.200 these two disciples who we haven't really met before. We 0:06:10.200 --> 0:06:12.320 don't know who the one is. His name isn't given. 0:06:12.360 --> 0:06:14.880 The other one is Cleopus, the only time I think 0:06:14.960 --> 0:06:19.320 Coleopus is mentioned. So relatively minor disciples in terms of 0:06:19.680 --> 0:06:24.080 this whole story that Luke has told. But for some reason, 0:06:24.279 --> 0:06:29.840 Jesus is walking along with them, the resurrected Jesus and 0:06:29.880 --> 0:06:32.760 they don't recognize him. So this always gives us questions 0:06:32.800 --> 0:06:35.080 about resurrection and are we getting a new body that 0:06:35.520 --> 0:06:37.600 doesn't look like the old body? And why don't they 0:06:37.640 --> 0:06:41.360 recognize Jesus And is this something supernatural that kept them 0:06:41.400 --> 0:06:44.960 from recognizing them or did he just look different? All 0:06:45.000 --> 0:06:49.440 of those I can't answer. But we've got this journey 0:06:49.560 --> 0:06:52.440 that these two are going along with to this town 0:06:52.480 --> 0:06:55.400 of Emmaeus. And as they're going along, they're talking to 0:06:55.480 --> 0:06:59.480 Jesus and they're talking about what's happened, because Jesus is 0:06:59.520 --> 0:07:02.279 acting as if he has no idea of this story, 0:07:02.920 --> 0:07:06.839 and so we get to see that an understanding of 0:07:06.880 --> 0:07:10.240 what they were thinking at the time. It's this great 0:07:10.280 --> 0:07:16.800 little snapshot, this post this almost pre Easter vision here 0:07:16.880 --> 0:07:20.720 or this early Easter vision here, where they're still very confused, 0:07:21.000 --> 0:07:23.360 and they tell us what they had expected. They'd expected 0:07:23.440 --> 0:07:27.520 him to redeem Israel. That expected him to be Messiah, 0:07:27.840 --> 0:07:31.240 and probably Messiah in the traditional fashion of this is 0:07:31.240 --> 0:07:32.640 going to be the one who's going to kick out 0:07:32.640 --> 0:07:37.920 the Romans. Right, They weren't expecting him to come and 0:07:37.960 --> 0:07:40.520 die for their sin. That wasn't the Messiah they were 0:07:40.520 --> 0:07:45.680 looking for. And so they knew that he was powerful 0:07:45.720 --> 0:07:47.840 in word. Indeed, before God and all the people, they 0:07:47.920 --> 0:07:52.480 knew he was a prophet. But they their understanding of 0:07:52.520 --> 0:07:56.160 Messiah isn't clear yet, and their understanding of his mission 0:07:56.480 --> 0:08:01.240 was completely unclear, and it would get clarified here. And 0:08:01.320 --> 0:08:03.200 he said to them, how foolish you are, and how 0:08:03.200 --> 0:08:06.200 slow to believe all the prophets have spoken. Did not 0:08:06.360 --> 0:08:09.760 the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter 0:08:09.840 --> 0:08:12.920 his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, 0:08:13.200 --> 0:08:15.920 he explained to them what was said in all the 0:08:15.920 --> 0:08:21.800 scriptures concerning himself. So he starts to re educate them 0:08:21.920 --> 0:08:25.960 what Messiah means, and starts talking to them, probably with 0:08:26.040 --> 0:08:29.920 those verses we know from Isaiah about a suffering servant 0:08:30.280 --> 0:08:34.400 who comes and gives himself as a sacrifice. He probably 0:08:34.440 --> 0:08:37.840 talks to them about sacrifice and talks to them about 0:08:37.880 --> 0:08:41.280 the lamb of the Passover because it goes going back 0:08:41.320 --> 0:08:43.920 with Moses and the prophets, and talks to them about 0:08:44.360 --> 0:08:49.920 what Jesus' role really was. As they approached the village 0:08:50.040 --> 0:08:53.000 to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if 0:08:53.040 --> 0:08:57.080 he were to go further, but they urged him strongly 0:08:57.120 --> 0:08:59.120 stay with us, for it is nearly evening, the day 0:08:59.160 --> 0:09:02.080 is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. 0:09:02.720 --> 0:09:05.120 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, 0:09:05.200 --> 0:09:08.000 gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. 0:09:08.320 --> 0:09:11.360 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and 0:09:11.400 --> 0:09:15.280 he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, were 0:09:15.320 --> 0:09:18.080 not our hearts burning within us? I think 0:09:41.280 --> 0:09:43.679 It's interesting that it is the breaking of bread that 0:09:43.720 --> 0:09:46.640 they recognized Jesus, because that is still something we use 0:09:46.720 --> 0:09:50.640 to remember Jesus, that breaking of bread for communion or 0:09:50.960 --> 0:09:54.480 Eucharist or whatever you call it in your church. And 0:09:54.640 --> 0:09:57.040 we don't know if they recognized him from the feeding 0:09:57.080 --> 0:09:59.400 of the five thousand or whether they were there at 0:09:59.440 --> 0:10:03.840 the Last Supper. Certainly the Last Supper only depicts twelve 0:10:03.840 --> 0:10:06.480 people there, but that doesn't mean that that is accurate. 0:10:06.800 --> 0:10:09.400 These could have been disciples who were there in one 0:10:09.400 --> 0:10:12.440 of those occasions. But it's in that breaking of the 0:10:12.480 --> 0:10:16.080 bread that they realize that it's Jesus and they run 0:10:16.120 --> 0:10:20.240 backed dru Jrusal And remember Jerusalem is still seven miles away, 0:10:20.280 --> 0:10:22.760 so it's going to take them some hours to get 0:10:22.800 --> 0:10:25.480 back to Jerusalem. And by the time they get there, 0:10:25.559 --> 0:10:28.880 the word is out. It's not just the women that 0:10:29.000 --> 0:10:32.240 Jesus has appeared to.
