With 0:13:20.080 --> 0:13:23.640 the assault and the lifeguards, that was pretty much the flashpoint. 0:13:25.640 --> 0:13:28.880 What's been reported over the years and the narrative written, 0:13:28.960 --> 0:13:33.240 I suppose what pushed by academics is only focused on 0:13:33.320 --> 0:13:37.680 the daytime events at Cronulla, where certainly there was racism, 0:13:37.760 --> 0:13:40.640 there was racist slogans, there was racism used. 0:13:41.240 --> 0:13:42.520 But what we say is that there was a lot 0:13:42.559 --> 0:13:43.600 of sprookers. 0:13:43.120 --> 0:13:44.640 In the crowd that day. They didn't come from the 0:13:44.679 --> 0:13:48.240 Carnella area. They were driven by racism, they were driven 0:13:48.240 --> 0:13:50.880 by white supremacy, and I think a lot of the 0:13:51.000 --> 0:13:53.439 young people down there from the area and also outside 0:13:53.480 --> 0:13:55.920 the area really lost their way and we spected them 0:13:56.400 --> 0:14:00.120 later and they also they don't know what overtok their 0:14:00.160 --> 0:14:01.880 heads that day, but. 0:14:02.080 --> 0:14:03.480 What really occurred. 0:14:03.600 --> 0:14:06.439 The journalists went home, there was a lot of stuff 0:14:06.480 --> 0:14:08.839 in the evening news about what occurred, which enraged the 0:14:09.760 --> 0:14:12.600 people from the western suburbs. Then we had these massive 0:14:12.600 --> 0:14:15.679 revenge attacks which literally went for weeks, and the intelligence 0:14:15.720 --> 0:14:18.319 we had over those period of time was absolutely frightening. 0:14:18.360 --> 0:14:22.600 I mean, there was entire suburbs destroyed, broken windows, cars smashed, 0:14:22.600 --> 0:14:26.760 people being baseball battered, stabbed, gunshots fired, churches burnt down, 0:14:27.400 --> 0:14:29.440 and it seems over the years that that's sort of 0:14:29.480 --> 0:14:32.480 the site of the riots has been almost forgotten about. 0:14:32.560 --> 0:14:35.280 And some of the intelligence that we had, including a 0:14:35.320 --> 0:14:39.680 hand grenade attack and drive by shooting with machine guns 0:14:39.680 --> 0:14:43.560 on a hotel at Cronulla which was foiled, and certainly 0:14:43.600 --> 0:14:46.080 another massive attack that was going to occur at Westfields 0:14:46.080 --> 0:14:49.920 at Miranda that was foiled. These incidents just seemed to 0:14:50.000 --> 0:14:52.160 have disappeared into obscurity over. 0:14:51.960 --> 0:14:54.320 The years aps if I could add to that retail. 0:14:54.560 --> 0:14:59.360 If you google any photo or videographic evidence of the riots, 0:15:00.280 --> 0:15:04.400 ninety nine percent is a bunch of marauding and abreated 0:15:04.440 --> 0:15:08.920 white guys wandering around looking for Arabic others to bash, 0:15:09.320 --> 0:15:14.000 and so academic social commentators developed a truth that the 0:15:14.040 --> 0:15:18.640 Southern Shire was a racist Caucasian enclave. We challenged that 0:15:18.760 --> 0:15:21.960 truth because the evidence is quite to the contrary. As 0:15:22.040 --> 0:15:25.320 Mark outlined, there were far more violent and just as 0:15:25.360 --> 0:15:29.920 biggoted and racist elements in response.
