WEBVTT - Labor’s Take Two on Migration

0:00:11.369 --> 0:00:14.760
<v Speaker 1>Hello and welcome to the update. I'm Mike Humphrey. At

0:00:14.840 --> 0:00:17.259
<v Speaker 1>take two for the federal government, with Labor set to

0:00:17.320 --> 0:00:21.400
<v Speaker 1>unveil its migration policy this morning, Immigration Minister Tony Burke

0:00:21.420 --> 0:00:23.880
<v Speaker 1>delayed its release last month, with the PM saying the

0:00:23.920 --> 0:00:27.270
<v Speaker 1>policy wasn't finished. Insiders suggest the plan will see a

0:00:27.310 --> 0:00:31.210
<v Speaker 1>clampdown on visa hopping and temporary visas. A plan to

0:00:31.230 --> 0:00:33.890
<v Speaker 1>sell off more than 60 defence sites across Australia has

0:00:33.909 --> 0:00:37.530
<v Speaker 1>hit a major hurdle. A Senate committee demanding the Albanese

0:00:37.570 --> 0:00:40.980
<v Speaker 1>government shelve the scheme over inadequate consultation with the public.

0:00:41.430 --> 0:00:44.089
<v Speaker 1>Concerns also raised for what it means for the Defence

0:00:44.150 --> 0:00:47.370
<v Speaker 1>Force and how ready we are for conflict. The public's

0:00:47.409 --> 0:00:49.670
<v Speaker 1>been kept in the dark over a number of attempted

0:00:49.729 --> 0:00:53.800
<v Speaker 1>terror attacks, ASIO foiling four major plots since Bondi with

0:00:53.840 --> 0:00:57.520
<v Speaker 1>calls for the government to provide greater transparency. New stats

0:00:57.600 --> 0:01:00.580
<v Speaker 1>reveal we're among the worst food wasters in the world.

0:01:00.600 --> 0:01:03.760
<v Speaker 1>Aussies chucking out around 29 million meals a day with

0:01:03.820 --> 0:01:06.540
<v Speaker 1>calls on the government to help stop wastage in food

0:01:06.600 --> 0:01:11.130
<v Speaker 1>supply chains. Overseas, the European Union has invited Canada into

0:01:11.190 --> 0:01:14.470
<v Speaker 1>its fold, the EU wanting it to become an associate

0:01:14.530 --> 0:01:17.500
<v Speaker 1>member in what's an unprecedented move from the trading body,

0:01:17.800 --> 0:01:20.520
<v Speaker 1>the invite coming as Canada wrestles with the US over

0:01:20.580 --> 0:01:24.300
<v Speaker 1>taxes and tariffs. Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve has raised

0:01:24.380 --> 0:01:27.869
<v Speaker 1>interest rates for the first time since 2023, and that

0:01:27.890 --> 0:01:30.369
<v Speaker 1>could have a direct impact here at home, putting pressure

0:01:30.390 --> 0:01:32.870
<v Speaker 1>on the RBA to keep rates higher to help protect

0:01:32.910 --> 0:01:36.380
<v Speaker 1>the Aussie dollar. And former first dog of the White House,

0:01:36.480 --> 0:01:40.780
<v Speaker 1>Sonny Obama, has passed away aged 13. Former President Barack

0:01:40.800 --> 0:01:44.170
<v Speaker 1>Obama sharing the news on X, describing the Portuguese water

0:01:44.200 --> 0:01:47.530
<v Speaker 1>dog as a force of nature. Sport and entertainment news

0:01:47.570 --> 0:01:51.310
<v Speaker 1>are up next. In sport, Millie Elliott and Corbin Baxter

0:01:51.330 --> 0:01:54.750
<v Speaker 1>have called time on their NRLW careers. The duo keen

0:01:54.800 --> 0:01:57.200
<v Speaker 1>on a fairytale finish with the Roosters looking to go

0:01:57.260 --> 0:02:00.100
<v Speaker 1>deep in this year's finals. In the men's comp and

0:02:00.160 --> 0:02:03.220
<v Speaker 1>Dolphins playmaker Brad Schneider has inked out a two-year deal

0:02:03.260 --> 0:02:06.200
<v Speaker 1>to remain at Redcliffe till the end of 2028. In

0:02:06.240 --> 0:02:09.220
<v Speaker 1>the AFL, Carlton's Nick Newman and Nick Haynes have signed

0:02:09.340 --> 0:02:12.880
<v Speaker 1>one-year deals to play on till 2027, while Ollie Hollands

0:02:12.940 --> 0:02:15.600
<v Speaker 1>has signed on for an extra three years. And the

0:02:15.660 --> 0:02:18.669
<v Speaker 1>start of the A-League season might be delayed with referees

0:02:18.730 --> 0:02:22.660
<v Speaker 1>locked in a pay dispute with Football Australia. In entertainment news,

0:02:22.720 --> 0:02:26.150
<v Speaker 1>Spider-Man Brand New Day is continuing to smash records at

0:02:26.169 --> 0:02:29.150
<v Speaker 1>the box office. It's taken over Star Wars The Force

0:02:29.250 --> 0:02:32.250
<v Speaker 1>Awakens to become the highest-grossing film of all time in

0:02:32.270 --> 0:02:36.669
<v Speaker 1>the US and Canada, raking in a whopping $ 936 million.

0:02:37.210 --> 0:02:40.020
<v Speaker 1>And Ed Sheeran's concert tour is in strife while he

0:02:40.040 --> 0:02:43.600
<v Speaker 1>continues to lose followers on social media. This comes after

0:02:43.639 --> 0:02:47.100
<v Speaker 1>Macklemore was dropped as his supporting act for making pro-Palestinian

0:02:47.160 --> 0:02:51.380
<v Speaker 1>comments while performing earlier this month at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

0:02:51.889 --> 0:02:54.339
<v Speaker 1>And that's the latest from the Nova News podcast team.

0:02:54.380 --> 0:02:56.570
<v Speaker 1>We'll have another episode of the update for you later.
